Greetings, Fight Freaks! We have plenty to discuss. So make sure you check out the new notebook, the always updated schedule, this week's blogs and new p4p rankings. There's no FNF this week, but we have an interesting ShoBox tonight (Bute-Zuniga) and toomrrow's Barrera-Khan PPV. So let's get to it.
Greetings Dan, every great fighter has a great fight left in him they say...does Barrera? Who you got winning?
I am so torn on this fight I honestly do not know. I can see Barrera, with all his experience and warrior mentality, sumoning the energy and smashing Khan. But Khan is so much bigger and faster that I can see him just playing with Barrera and being solid on defense, as Freddie Roach has been preaching. I know Barrera lost a couple of fights in a row but they were to Marquez and Pacquiao, not bad guys to lose to. I just don't know.
Dan, with Barrios out vs. the Hernandez fight, will we still be promised 4 fights April 4th?
Yes. They are looking for a new opponent for Carlos Hernandez and it may be Vicente Escobedo, which is a solid fight,
Why is this fight already a crossroads fight for Khan? Is it because he was so devastatingly knocked out? He only has one loss.
Because he was supposed to A MEGA STAR and he got WAXED. If he loses for a second time in three fights, it will be hard to bring him back to a star level when people will have lost faith in his potential.
It feels good to be LIVE on a freaky friday chat. No transcript 4 me this week. Any chance Pavlik steps up in weight again for a real challange? Mora will last 4 rounds tops.
Mora will last longer than four rounds, I assure you. Unfortunately, there is no big fight for Pavlik at 160 other than Abraham and for a variety of reasons on both sides, the fight is not happening, at least right now (which annoys me).
I was really excited when I read that Kirkland and Ortiz might get title shots on the June BAD. How close to a done deal are those fights?
Kirkland may fight Dzindziruk (or less of a chance to fight Santos) and Ortiz may face Kotelnik. Golden Boy is talking to Universum about both fights. HBO would take both fights and the managers of Kirkland and Ortiz are willing to do both fights. Now it's going to come down to money for the Germans.
Kirkald v. Drizidruk and Ortiz v. Kotelenik would be a tremendous doubleheader. Hope it works out.
Would be an absolutely tremendous doubleheader, one I would want to travel to. If it comes off it would be another awesome card in what is so far a banner year for HBO.
Dan, I am just fascinated with Victor Ortiz. He is great prospect and his story is almost something out of a movie. Abandoned by both of his parents at a very young age, so many obstacles he overcame to be where he is at is amazing. At 22 years old he is paying for his younger brother college education. You can?t help but root for a kid that literally made it on his own.
Dan you a Fight Night fan? PS3 or X-Box and what do you think about the graphics and time spent on a game for a so called "dying sport?"
I havent really played the Fight Night games much but they look awesome. The new one's graphics may be enough to make me buy one.
Dan - the closer it gets, more I look forward to Wright v. Williams. Who's your pick there?
I like the fight and think it's a very interesting matchup. I lean to Williams because of his youth, the fact that Winky has been off for soooooo long and that Williams throws so many punches. I will be at the fight so you'll have my offiial pick the day before the fight,
DAN,if that hopkins vs ademek fight happens in july will it be at the "rock"in jersey??
That would be one possible venue. Atlantic City is another logical spot for it.
D$, I rember a few years back when the great JT had no one to fight (spinks, ouma) and then suddenly many guys came up....I think soon Pavlik will have some fresh guys to fight.
I sure hope you are right because right now middleweight is woeful beyond Abraham and Pavlik.
from yesterday............. Mike(Charlotte): Jon, who would win in a fight between yourself and Dan Rafeal? Jon Anik: Jon Anik.
As I have said of my boy Anik -- he can't carry my jock.
Dan, Why Mora and not Sturm? Was Sturm more of a threat, scheduling conflict or the almighty dollar?
A little of both I am sure. Sturm is fighting in late April and Top Rank doesn't want to wait another six weeks to finalize a fight, especially when Sturm could lose or get or something like that happen that would prevent him from fighting in late June or July.
Dont forget the Oleg Maskaev fight live on gofightlive.tv at 11 am tomorrow
Dan the Man, I was at the Alvarado fight and that KO was sick. You could hear the crack when the punch landed. I wanted to know what you think of this Matthysse guy and will this be a true test?
The Alvarado-Matthysse fight is not done, just the leading possibility at the moment. But Matthysse is a good puncher but smaller than Alvarado. He is the brother of Walter Matthysse, who was drilled by Cintron and never really been tested.
Good Friday Touch ActinDanactin. Is there any place ingeneral I can get weigh in info for fights like time..place..etc? I am going to go to a couple of upcoming fights and would like to get there a few days early and check out weigh ins if they are open to the public. Thanks.
Call the venue or promoter's office and ask.
What are your thoughts on Taylor v. Froch? I was thinking of heading down to Fooxwoods for it.
Tremendous fight. I am really looking forward to it. I will be in Bristol to be in the FNF studio the night before and then will go from Bristol to Foxwoods after the telecast to cover the fight the next day. Will be a good one I think. I am still perplexed about why HBO refused to do the fight.
Dan, whats your pick for tonight? Bute or Zuniga
I like Bute. Way better skills and hopefully he is in better condition than he was against Andrade, when he was dead tired in the last round.
Is it true the Arreola-Mcline fight has been placed on hold because Wlad might end up fighting Arreola?
No, the Arreola-McCline fight is on.
Will anybody besides Roy's family and friends pay the ppv price or pay to go see the fight?
I have no idea how the MMA bouts are on the show, but the boxing matches are, to be kind, a little weak.
What are your thoughts on a Berto/Juan Urango fight? Tough fight for berto?
If it is made, it's pretty solid. Sure, I'd rather see Judah but nothing wrong with Urango, who is a big 140, while Berto is a small 147. Probably a solid action fight.
Dan, is Lajuan Simon going to be a threat tomorrow for Abraham?
I seriously doubt it.
The Freaks have are throwing the kitchen sink at Dan today, and he is picking it up and throwing it right back at them!
Is Cotto-Clottey a done deal yet?!
Not officially done yet, but it will get done. Arum and HBO are on the same page and close to a deal. Arum needs to finalize with his fighters, but it will get done.
When will Floyd come out of retirement and who will he fight?
Are you still replaying the Diaz-Marquez fight at home?
Thanks for being honest and saying you just don't know about Barrera/Kahn. Most media would scream some opinion one way or another.
Dan, I know we all like to bash the sanctioning bodies and for good reason, but the only reason Ortiz vs. Kotelnik and Kirkland vs. Dzindziruk is being discussed is because there are belts on the line, not REEEEEAAAAAAALLLLL titles. It doesn't matter to the fighters and promoters, they want the belts.
Belts or not, Dzindziruk is a good fighter who is undefeated and beat a quality guy like Daniel Santos and also beat the Love Child in a competitive fight. Kotelnik is also a very solid fighter. Sure, they are being selected because of belts but they are certainly good fighters who pose legitimate tests for young rising contenders.
Is Juan Manuel Marquez the no. 1 boxer in the world?
Steiny, Steiny, Steiny. I gave you a second chance last week and you come with that weak stuff? Did you not notice the new p4p rankings on the boxing page? I suggest you look at them and come strong next time or go home. No more Mr. Nice Guy.
I understand that Clottey/Cotto is a great fight and one i'm looking forward to but if your Bob Arum, why make this fight? If Pac wins against Hatton that would be a huge money fight. Mosley is another huge money fight. Clottey brings nothing to the table expect one long night.
It's a great fight that a lot of folks would like to see. Why should Cotto wait for the Pac-Hatton winner? He wants to fight in June and nobody is going to dictate to him. Who complains about a great matchup?
I know you get asked all the time but does ESPN really not have a half-hour time slot in the run of a week where you could do a boxing show? We have one for Dan's Sakes
Are you going to foot the bill?
Kirkland fought on March 7 and is fighting again on May 2 and June 27. That seems like a short amount of time to fight 3 times?
Kirkland is young and strong and ready to roll. The busier he is, the better he and his team like it. He's hot right now and taking advantage of it.
Am I the only one who's disappointed in the quality (or lack thereof) of opponent for Kirkland on the Pac-Hatton undercard?
His opponent is not done yet, even though Michael Walker is the leading candidate. Is it the best fight ever? No. But for a fight between Julio and possibly a world title fight it is understandable.
Pat your suppose to complain about the BAD fights! Some people will always find something to complain about
Exactly. Boxing fans are just never happy no matter what and that really annoys me.
Dan, glad we'll see Gary Russell Jr. March 28th, your thoughts on that Shobox card?
Happy to see Russell on TV. Like the co-feature -- Hearns-Yorgey. Wish Dirrell would face a live body.
Dan, I am relatively new to the sweet science, but I am a huge fan. My question is why doesn't HBO or Showtime recognize the Ring mag rankings and championships? It's like they purposefully make sure not to mention Ring mag rankings or belts at all. While ESPN FNF goes out of it's way to use the Ring mag as the true measuring stick in boxing.
Call Ross Greenburg and Ken Hershman and ask them.
Will you be at the P.Will-Winky fight?
Read your new P4P list this morning and i'm just wonderinig what was your findings for having Jermaine Taylor no. 11, I would think you could make a case for everyone behind him to be in front of him?
Well he has two wins against No. 3 Bernard Hopkins and has been highly competitive with Pavlik twice. Taylor is one of the best fighters in the world and has the resume to back it up.
Just curious Dan, Do you ever get burnt out from watching so many boxing matches all the time and if so do you think that you only then get excited over major marquee matches such as the upcoming Hatton vs. Pacquiao
I do watch a lot of boxing and deal with the sport almost round the clock so there are times when I just need to turn off the phone or not check my email or whatever for a day or so and just do something else. But I love boxing and I always get pumped up for the big fights especially. But sometimes, I do just need a short break.
For anyone who isn't a boxing fan you should show them the FNF fight main event last week. How many athletes in other sports would continue after suffering such injuries?
Delvin Rodriguez is a tough kid. He fought through some painful injuries last week. People don't even realize.
When do you think we will see the peterson brothers fight again? I always like watchin them on ESPN
Anthony is out for a bit with a knee injury. Lamont fights on HBO on April 25.
Double Dan, I have agreed with everything you've said so far today. I am happy they will have such good young talent on the Hatton Pac undercard, the year has started out phenominal, everyone needs to quit whining!
do you think sugar shane is making the right move to sit out and wait for the hatton/pacman winner?
I dont see any other big fight for him this summer so why not sit and wait for a bit? Shane is at the stage of his career where every fight could be his last so he needs to make sure he makes the biggest and best fight he can.
What's next for Juan Diaz? Do you see him taking on Valero in the future.
That would be an interesting fight. Not sure what his next move is right now. He will take a break, of course, and then see what is out there for him. I could see him trying to make another run at lightweight or maybe even moving up to 140.
How about Oscar fighting Vernon Forrest? Can that fight be made and who would you pick?
Does the GBP event on FNF 4/10 indicate the deal is done?
It's not signed yet, but it looks like it will get done and that date is their first.
After hearing that the ghost took 23 stiches over his eye, do you still think he should have continued in his fight v chino latino? (which by the way has to be one of the better nick names in boxing)
Yes, I believe he should have finished the second round and allowed his cutman to see what he could do.
Dan, Was wondering what your thoughts are on this whole Klitschko/Haye mess? Who is really at fault? Also, if Haye falls through and Klits makes his mandatory against Povetkin, what would be available to him in the fall?
Both sides are to blame. The Haye people are amateurs. The Klitschko side is greedy. The Haye side believes it has way more leverage than it does. The Klitschko camp has other options but not any as lucrative as Haye. I think the Haye fight will ultimately get done.
Any chance of seeing Khan-Prescott II if Khan gets by Barrera?
Obviously, that fight will always be there for him, but if Khan wins, he will be in position to fight for a world title since the Barrera fight is basically a WBO 135 eliminator.
i heard that arum is considering another split card for the pavlik/mora fight where the second fight would be broadcast from mexico featuring margarito. have you heard anything about this?
Go read the news story I wrote a couple of days ago about Pavlik. It's on top of the news headlines on the ESPN boxing page.
Dan, I was wondering how you scored Pacquiao/Marquez II and that if you scored it for Marquez, couldn't that warrant having Marquez #1 P4P?
I was at both Pacquiao-Marquez fights and I had both for Marquez. However, they were close enough where you can make an arguement certainly for Manny. And the official decision was the official decision regardless of my opinion. Plus, Manny has been fighting excellent opponents and winning. He is No. 1 but if there are some out there who want to make JMM No. 1 on their list, that is their call. I have my list and think it's the right way.
I'm really excited for the canchila/segura rematch. I think Canchila wins by decision again. any thoughts?
I hope it's as good of a fight as their first bout. It's on Azteca America.
I call for banning jack for not doing his homework and reading Dan's articles!!!
Dan, just wanted to let you know you made a typo in the Weekend Scorecard. You actually wrote that Steve Forbes knocked someone out, lol.
It was not a typo, believe it or not!
Rumor has it that Peterson-Blain is off the televised undercard because of funding, and that the whole fight card may be moved from Montreal...Any truth to this?
You're like a week behind dude. Peterson-Blain is off the April 4 Showtime card and on the April 25 HBO card. The April 4 Showtime card is still in Montreal with Bradley-Holt and Andrade-Tyspko on the televised part of the card.
thoughts on a possible Arthur Abraham vs BHOP fight?
Why? Won't happen. BHop has way bigger fish to fry than an impossible fight to make with a middleweight.
Dano, any real reason why you could think the networks arn't giving Mike Jones the shot you have recently spoke of? The man is a KO artist and has a lot of tools. Not to mention a strong following here in Philly.
I have no idea. Jones is at least as interesting and dynamic a prospect as any other prospect HBO and Showtime put on. It boggles the mind that he can't even get a date on ESPN2. He is exciting and has a lot of potential. I'd rather watch him fight than a lot of the guys I have seen on TV.
Dan-o, I'm heading to vegas for Hatton/Pac, and would really like to be at the weigh-in. Will I need a special pass or something?
No, the weigh ins in Vegas are open to the public. That weigh in will be in the MGM Grand Garden Arena, which will be able to hold probably about 5,000 for the weigh in. Just get in line early and you'll get a good (and free) seat.
How is Angulo ranked #1 by both the WBC and WBO? His best win is against Cosme Rivera.
I would expect nothing less from those corrupt entities.
Has Michael Moorer become somewhat of a protege of Freddie Roach?
Yes, he is working as his assistant.
DTM, how far do you see your Dukies making it this March?
Not too far, unfortunately. I will be watching the ACC tourney tonight.
Just out of curiousity, how many Ricky Hattons will be stepping on that scale on 5/1 at the weigh-in?
My understand is that it will be only one, since there is only one Ricky Hatton.
It was a headbutt!!
In a fight between paulie malignaggi vs stevie forbes who would you to pick to most likely deliver a knock out?
I saw Carl Froch on British TV last night, and he's still more focused on calling out Joe C. than anything else. Taylor could drill him.
So has HBO shunned Pavlik now? I can't really blame them. Is it not because of Pavlik, but because of the fact hes in one of the weakest divisions of the sport?
They haven't shunned Pavlik. But it's like you said -- he's not fighting a significant opponent so they are not interested.
Dan: Any chance Adamek-Hopkins could happen at the Prudential Center, or is the fight, if it happens, more likely to occur in AC?
Both are possible.
dan the Man, Do you think Escobedo is a solid contender? I've kept up with his career so far, and it seems like they are bringing him along real slow, your thoughts.
No, I don't view him as a solid contender yet. He is still a prospect and needs to face a better caliber of competition and win to be considered a true contender. But he's got potential and is coming off a very good win last time out.
Dano, if you put Forbes, Spinks and Paulie in the ring with a knockout only match, what round would it end?
D$ - The quote from Mayweather Sr in your notebook about Freddie Roach was hilarious. I can't wait for 24/7 and seeing him talk more trash.
Dan after watching the Marquez-Diaz fight, I would love to see Marquez-Hatton. I think Hatton could land some left hooks that could make marquez pay, while marquez could defiently couterpunch the hitman.
Most likely to knock someone out: Paulie, Stevie, Iron Boy, or a shower door?
In the immortal words of our broadcast hero, DEFINITELY the Shower Door.
Dad, Every time I step up in my career I get blasted!! Will I ever get over the hump, and will you always love me no matter what???
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
You say Khan will probably get a title shot if he beats Barrera. That seems a bit unfair to Prescott, don't you think?
Since when is boxing or life fair?
What's the deal with fonsy gomez? He claims he wants to fight chavez but we all know that will never happen. Is there any fights in the works?
Gomez will be on Azteca America on May 1 in Vegas against Juan Buendia. He is signing with Top Rank and a Chavez fight could be a few fights down the road.
Any idea on who Humberto Soto might fight next assuming he gets past Davis.
Dude how about we let him get past Davis first?
Do you smile everytime Michael Buffer refers to Joel Julio as "Love Child" knowing thats the moniker that you created?
Dan, as much as I like Pavlik.. Am I the only one who thinks Mora will be much tougher than expected with his in and out slick style? I am not saying Kelly won't win but I dont think it will be that easy for him. Thoughts?
Mora is slick and has a good heart. So I think he'll hang in there, but I do think Pavlik beats him.
24/7 will never be the same without Roger Mayweather.
Dan - going to the Peter fight at in LA and wondered about his opponent. will it be a good fight or a glorified sparring session?
He is fighting Eddie Chambers, who is a very solid opponent and a slick, fast fighter. Eddie is just outside the top 10. On paper, it's a very solid fight.
What about the quote from Bradley about Bernie Madoff? Now that is high comedy.
Dan, While I was in the shower this morning I was thinking about this great scenario: Money May comes out and fights Marquez. Mosley fights the winner of Hatton/Pacman. Winner of both fight each other. Which my prediction would have Money fighting Mosley next May.
I didn't read past the first line.
Dan is it safe to say that Forbes/Spinks/Paulie have better chances ko'ing someone in a pillow fight?
The Forbes, Malignaggi, Spinks knockout fight would last 6 Overtimes
That SU-UConn game was sick last night. My wife went to SU, so I root for the Orange in the Big East. And my school -- Binghamton University -- plays for its conference title tomorrow and a shot at its first NCAA tourney! GO BEARCATS!!!!!!!!!!!
Cotto doesn't duck anyone... I love it. Could sit back and wait for bigger money fights, but instead rather fight anyone. That's Old School!!
have they announced a venue for the lattimore/spinks bout yet? if they could somehow add devon alexancer to the card, i have no doubt it could sell 8-9,000 tickets in st. louis.
That fight has no date, no venue, not TV yet. If/when it happens, I would expect it to be in St. Louis.
Why does Abraham get so much love form everyone? The only legit guy he's fought is Miranda, who literally broke his face in the first fight. I mean if that Ref doesn't give AA 20 Mins of treatment on his jaw, Miranda wins by TKO and Abraham would still be a nobody to Americans
There are many who have that opinion.
Any possibility that if BHop wins the Cruiserweight title and Haye doesn't get his situation at Heavyweight cleared up, Haye drops back down to challenge Hopkins?
Very unlikely Haye comes back to cruiser.
Will Mijares fight be on TV tomorrow night? Doesnt look like its on Azteca
It's on Televisa in Mexico.
Danno, where is the Azteca America fight on May 1st in Vegas going to be at; would be nice to go to that fight and of course, that other fight on May 2nd, which I hear is a big fight...lol
The May 1 card will be at the Hard Rock in Vegas.
How in the world did Shobox get Selcuk Aydin? I thought he would be one of those who only stayed in Germany!
He is with Arena-Box and Arena has the May 1 ShoBox.
How great it is to hear Bute say he wants a rematch with Andrade to settle their controversial first fight. Most fighters would be avoiding that rematch like the plague.
That's a reason to like Bute. But saying it and actually doing it are two different things.
Dan, you impressed with fellow ESPNer Meyer breaking the chat record? Will Dan ever take a jab at breaking it?
Not at all. Any time I want, I can break that record for fun.
BHop-Adamek and Cotto-Clottey on regular HBO? Thank you, HBO!
If they both get done, agreed.
Dan, I've only seen Luevano in his fight against the excruciatingly boring Billy Dib. Please tell me I can expect more on the Pacquiao-Hatton undercard.
Dib made that fight suck because Dib is one of the most agonizing fighters on earth. Concepcion will be way more aggressive and the fight should be a lot better.
Do you and Anik hate eachother or is it just busting chops?
Just busting. I have nothing but love for Anik.
Any fan or boxing critic who thinks Mora is garbage, doesn't truly know boxing. The Snake is better and tougher than people think.
D$ - To get ready for tomorrow's action I popped in the Barrera-McKinney war. Tremendous fight and the way BAD should be.
Hey Dan, I've been going back and forth about this. Will Deigo Chico Coralles be inducted to the Hall Of Fame?
He probably will.
Do you think HBO finally gets it?! There first quarter of 2009 has been tremendous and I hope it continues to be from now on!
Dan, do you speak Spanish or do you have to have a translator with you when you are at fights?
I took Spanish in high school and have learned a little being around Hispanic fighters and their teams but if I am interviewing a Spanish-speaking boxer you have to use a translator. Fortunately, there are many bilingual people in boxing and the promoters usually have someone with the fighter who speaks both languages.
Will the Andy Lee-Echols fight be resurrected, or is Lee going elsewhere for his next fight?
Lee is going to Ireland to fight on a card a couple of weeks later. But not against Echols.
As a Berto fan, Urango scares. Do you think that fight would be tougher for him than Judah?
If it is it would be because Urango has a lot better chin than Judah.
Dan, I know we aren't even a quarter into 2009 so we can't call a FOY, but how would you rate Marquez-Diaz against the two Vasquez-Marquez fights that won your FOY the last two years?
The Vazquez-Marquez fights are better but JMM-Diaz was a terrific fight. But I dont think it would beat any of the three Vazquez-Marquez bouts for FOY if they were in the same year.
Hey Dan, can someone notify HBO, that we are waiting for the second coming of Legendary Nights? Miss that show I actually have tapings of most of them just the other day I watched the Tale of Bowe Golota great stuff. Although old you can never get tired of it.
I'm actually intrigued by the Mora-Pavlik fight. Mora used his skills to defeat Forrest. He can use the same skills, stick and move, to prevent the power punches thrown by Pavlik. Hey, it could be a lot worse...
Rewatched Castillo-Corrales 1 last nigh. I'm still in awe that it actually happenend. I can't imagine a fight ever topping that. The first 9 rounds were unbelieavable but the that 10th round was surreal! It still gives me chills seeing Castillo helpless on the ropes as Tony Weeks steps in
I caught it on Showtime the other night also. Best fight I have ever seen and certainly the best fight I have ever covered from ringside, by far. Just an awesome fight. I was in awe by what they did. I will never forget it.
Dan - is there any big matchup in boxing on the horizon that you could see being a potential FOTY this year?
I think Hatton-Pacman could certainly kick some butt. I think Cotto-Clottey has a lot of promise.
DTM, Kirkland's pressure is amazing, no question about it, but his power doesn't seem to be that ridiculous. Do you think he will run into problems when he faces a boxer who can stand his ground or makes him fight going backwards?
Really? You think Chico will get an HOFer? That's got to be HUGELY in part to Corrales Castillo 1, right? I didn't think 1-2 vs. Casa and the Freitas win were enough to put him over the top..
I'm not saying I will necessarily vote for him, but I do think he will garner enough support to be elected, in part because of the his tragic and untimely death. But he beat a lot of good guys, made some incredible fights and won a bunch of titles. He personified the term warrior like few others.
Corrales and Castillo were a couple of sissies. I'm much tougher than they are!
One thing that allowed Corrales-Castillo I to be as great as it is is that Weeks didn't stop the fight after the second knockdown. Other than Smoger not sure how many would have let it go on.
A lot of refs may have stopped it after the first knockdown, which was a much more severe knockdown than the second one. The second one was because Corrales' legs were still gone from the first one.
Have you had a chance to talk to Clottey yet? I'm sure he's chompin at the bit to fight Cotto.
I talked to Joshua in NYC a few weeks ago at the Cotto-Jennings fight and he wanted to fight Cotto. I know he's hungry for a big fight.
Dan say that if Marquez is not able to get the winner of Pacquiao Hatton nor Mayweather. Can you see Marquez vs Judah at Jr. light weigh?
Not really. It's not a big fight.
Dan, any idea what the Shobox May 1st card will have on it?
Nothing is set but maybe welterweight Carlos Agbreu in the main event.
why isn't Juan Diaz on your P4P Top 20?
He had been around 17th and got waxed, so he's out.
Is Lamon Brewster making comeback?
He fights tomorrow on the Abraham undercard.
Dan, how much is the PPV tommorow?
Please axplain why Margarito is out of the P4P and Welter ratings...I may not disagree but would like to know why?
He can't fight for at least a year (at least in the US) and he committed a serious rules violation.
What time does the Khan-Barrera PPV start?
4 pm ET. Read the notebook dude.
I would of rather seen Felix trinidad fight Pavlik rather than Mora. Would of been more entertaining at least
I have NO interest in that mess. Besides Tito couldn't get close to 160. And if he did, Pavlik would smash him. He's old and shot.
When you say HBO and Showtime passed on the Pavlik-Mora fight, does that translate to Bob Arum priced himself out of it?
No. They did not make an offer on the fight of any kind.
Dan which is your favorite Legendary Nights episode?
I love the whole series, but I particularly like the Chavez-Taylor one, which I happen to watch on youtube a couple of weeks ago when I was in Houston and unable to sleep.
I am back from the Bat Phone.
The Bat Phone says the sides are trying to finalize Berto-Urango for May 30 on HBO.
You know it.
Hopkins/Trinidad would make an excellent Legendary Nights Episode.
Obviously. There are several fights from the past decade that would make for great episodes.
Hey Danimal. Haven't been in the chat room for a while. It's good to be back. I know its early in both of their careers but who would you take in a Mike Jones - Danny Garcia all Philadelphia showdown?
Well Jones is in a bigger division, he has more pro experience and he's a bigger puncher.
Dani, Gamboa is fighting for WBA interim belt...does this mean that we will be mandatory for Chris pretty soon?
The WBA is a disgrace. I am told this will be for the regular WBA 126 title because John has been made a super champion even though he is not unified. The WBA is just a disgusting organization that now literally recognized two titleholders in some divisions. I wrote a blog a week or so ago about the whole situation at lightweight, which was a disgrace heading into the JMM-Diaz. The WBA is grotesque.
Did I mention that the WBA is a horrible, evil organization and actually makes the WBC look honorable these days?
Dani...is Berto-Urango at 147 or 140
If it happens, it would be at 147 for Berto's title.
Dan, why don't promoters put their fights on DVD and sell them?
Dan can you tell us how you really feel about the WBA? AKA We BE Asinine
HBO put on Pavlik-Lockett but won't put on Pavlik-Mora. Is that because Lockett was a mandatory and HBO had Pavlik under contract?
HBO has never had Pavlik under contract. HBO did the Lockett fight and regretted it. It was a horrible match on paper, worse in the ring and did a horrible rating.
World's Bogus Association!
Will Showtime televise an undercard fight tonight?
No, tonight's ShoBox with Bute is just a single fight.
Danvin Klein, Going to Montreal to see my first boxing match live in person: What should I wear?
I couldn't care less.
Dan, Gotta love B-Hops stones for always wanting to fight the best (and beating most of them) but at this point I think Adamek decapitates him at 199!
And there are a lot of folks I have talked to who think Hopkins makes Adamek look like a fool. That's why it's a very interesting fight -- because the outcome is very much in doubt.
Are Antillon and Gomez going to be headlining a card in Vegas on May 1 the night before Hatton-Pac?
Antillon is in the main event, Gomez will open.
Dude, You are the chat master! You post a couple of my questions (thanks) then I get on a conference call, go to starbucks, come back and you're still rolling! You are the B-Hop of chat longevity!
And after all these years of chats you are still surprised?
Dan, count me in with those who thinks Adamek is an easy fight for BHop. Hopkins would never lose to a plodder like Adamek who is easy to hit, even if he can punch.
Any Ward/Gatti fight would be on my list for Legendary Nights!
The comment about a Gatti-Ward Legendary Nights made me do a quick search on youtube and I came up with this, one of the greatest ringwalk songs ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvoeeq-BH4w
I dont think Hopkins has enough pop to deter Adamek. Banks and Cunningham landed some serious bombs and dont forget the Hatchet wielding mad man O'neil Bell couldnt touch him for 7 rds so he just quit. Have to go with Tomaz Adaaaamek!!!
Jeff, Believe me...if Hopkins(Smarter Boxer Ever) is fighting Adamek is because he knows that he will win
Dan, so the May 2 undercard will probably be Luevano-Concepcion, Kirkland-Walker, and Alvarado-Matthysse. That sounds worse than the Dec 6 undercard.. Do you agree with that?
Nothing is worse than Dec. 6.
Will Ortiz also be on the Pacquiao/Hatton card?
A prime Adamek went life and death with Paul Briggs...twice. Enough said. BHop schools him.
I got Barrera wining tomorrow also. He's an all around better fighter Amir might hit a harder and is younger but everything else favors Barrera
Dan, as a finance guy I've gotta give Timothy Bradley props for unleashing a Bernie Madoff blast on Kendall Holt in your Notebook. Kudos!
Tremendous quote from Bradley.
WBA = Were beyond a##holes
Any idea why HBO has not been interested in Kelly Pavlik recently? I guess I can understand passing on Rubio, but why pass on the Mora fight. Not long ago he was their new star. Did the Hopkins loss do that much damage to his reputation in HBO's eyes?
It's all about the matchup, except apparently in the case of Dawson-Tarver 2.
WAY BELOW AVERGAE
Great job with that link. Takes you right back. The electricity at Mohegan when they played that was absolutely intense.
Financial Advisor here, I sent the Bradley quote around the office and people loved it. A couple of people even wanting to watch him fight now.
DTM, I took your advice and YouTubed the Alvarado knockout. The first link I clicked was a Spanish broadcast. I've gotta agree with the commentator that proclaimed, "Ay Caramba!!!!"
Dan with Kirkland and Alvarado looking to be on the PPV undercard, do you think the bouts you mentioned in the notebook are competitive or mismatches that will end quickly?
Matthysse seems pretty solid for Alvarado based on his record. Could be a good little fight. Kirkland-Walker, well not so great. But at least Walker is a durable guy and it is Kirkland in between tough fights with Love Child and a possible title fight.
Remeber -- neither of those bouts are official yet, so let's not get carried away with anything until opponents are officially signed.
Dan, it seems like you get Bat Phone/Text/Emails a lot. Are those people getting back to you or do people just offer up information so you can keep the freaks informed.
Little bit of both.
John Ruiz is #1, enough said
When I was at Pavlik-Hopkins, Pavlik's ring walk reminded me of Gatti and I thought that he was going to win and be boxing's new superstar in Atlantic City, replacing Gatti. I don't think that prediction turned out very well.
Worst boxing assoc.
WBA = Want Belts Anyone?
Best one of the day.
Dan, not sure what other freaks think but I find Floyd Mayweather Sr.'s comments about Roach tasteless. I know it is promotions but it has a serious lack of class. For that reason alone I hope Pacman drills Hatton.
Mayweather isn't the classiest individual I have ever met.
We Be Allocatingtitleshotstounworthyfighters
Danaconda, usually during the pre-fight activities there is a video camera showing each fighter warming and getting ready. Do you know if there was video taken of Margarito's hands being unwrapped and the plaste substance being found? I would love to see that.
I have asked that exact question and HBO tells me they do not have video of the actual hand wrapping being done.
Hey Dan...I'm so excited for the April 4th Lightweight Lightning show because it will be my first live fight. Any chance you might grace us Austinites with your presence that evening?
I will not be there, but it's a great show and I can envision a RAD afterward. Plus Showtime has a good card that night too. And the next day is WrestleMania!!!!!!!!!!
DAN, LET'S GO GET SOME TACO BELL!!!!
Great notebook this morning. I'm really excited for a possible Berto/Urango fight. What are the chances this fight is made instead of one with Judah?
The Judah fight is a dead issue as far as I know, so Urango is the likely opponent if they can all work out the money.
... and the new interim WBA heavyweight champion of the world, Dan "The Man" Rafael!! He will now fight in a tournament with the other 10 interim WBA champions to see who will be crowned the undisputed champion!!
What up dan? Hey not a bad ppv card on saturday for 24.95, count me in. But next weeks ppv card looks very bad, i love roy but damn.....I will get it anyway, im a freak.
Dan, can we please not mention Joel Julio on this chat anymore until he actually does something close to realizing his potential?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
We Beat ADeadHorse
DANIMAL!!! I want to thank you for getting me back into boxing. I have been a casual fan most of my life but over the past 2 years i have steadily became a freak..My question is about James Kirkland...His performance saturday was great i will admit. But do you think he has the tools to become the next big thing? I mean his offense is great but sooner or later he is gonna get either outboxed by a slick counter puncher or he is gonna get hit by someone who has some power and get KO'd....Can you give me your opinion on this?
You're a bit wordy but I'll cut you some slack. Yes, Kirkland has defensive flaws, but that is part of what makes him fun to watch because you never know when he'll get nailed. He is hot right now and has sick offense, so he'll make the most of it as quickly as he can. His offense is almost his defense because he doesn't allow his opponents a chance to get comfortable because he attacks so hard.
Dan - when will HBO do another "COUNTDOWN TO.." show? I loved those, e.g. Hopkins-Calzaghe, Pavlik-Hopkins 1, and Cotto-Mosley. The shows made me even more pumped up for FREE HBO fights.
Good question. I don't think any are in the works at the moment. But let's say HBO does Adamek-Hopkins, I think that might make a good one to do one on. One of the reasons you are not seeing them so often is because there are so few PPVs right now.
For HBO in 2009 the motto is "it's all about the matchup"... unless you are with Al Haymon
That is an unfair statement. If HBO REALLY was all about Al's fighters don't you think HBO would have bought Taylor-Froch? Don't you think we would see Vernon Forrest on, etc.... Think before you drink the Kool Aid.
I read that Guerrero claims he was just abiding by the referee and doctors decision to stop the fight last saturday night. But as I watched the fight again, you could see the confusion and downright shock in the referee and doctors eyes. It didnt seem to me as though they were insisting on stoppage. Did you see this or have l lost my mind?
I saw it. The doc and ref were ready to let him go. He begged out.
Straight up, who is the biggest ass of a fighter you have ever encountered? If you can't name names, maybe give us the details?
I'm tempted to say but I won't. But he is an active titleholder.
if you had to choose between going to a possible cotto-clottey card, or a possible adamek-hopkins card, which would you choose? please don't say both, because i probably won't be able afford to go to both, and u, sir, are the decider
Do you have one of them as your favorite fighter? Does price matter because tickets could be priced differently? Does the undercard matter? It all depends.
We. Bs. Alot.
Dan, wasn't part of the Contender's deal with Versus showing live cards???Anything in the works for Bundrage or Bika?
Yes, I believe there will be at least two live Contender-promoted cards.
Dano, watch the look on the ref's face when Guerrero said he couldn't fight anymore, it was priceless
Man, I read somewhere that even Jeff Lacy now has a promotions company. Does every boxer think they can promote? Companies like that seem like a joke to me.
They usually are.
To Mike in Jersey: Cotto in the Garden on Puerto Rican Parade Eve is a guaranteed tremendous experience, if only for the atmosphere. Go to the Garden.
Adamek-Hopkins in Jersey would also be a sick atmosphere. Polish flags instead of PR flags.
Truth be told i like mayweather hatton for legendary nights on day. That British crowd was unbelieveable!
I totally agree.
Danaconda, to answer Metty's question, didn't you once write that Hopkins didn't like you for a long time because of some of the things you wrote about him? And Hopkins is an "active titleholder"...hmmm....
BHop went years without talking to me (and, frankly, I would not have talked to him either). That said, we've been fine for years and get along quite well these days. I respect BHop and I know he respects me. Plus, BHop is not an active titleholder.
Dan, in the new Fight Night game apparently Amin Asikainen is in it. How random is that for a video game?
Pretty cool. I guess it will sell well in Finland, where he is the country's best fighter.
What do you think of Demetrius Andrade? Do you think he could become the next big thing?
I think Andrade has everything to become a super star.
Any idea why DC doesn't get any big fights? Thanks!
DC has had its share of notable fights, just nothing really since Tyson-McBride. But the commission here is terrible.
Dan In Real Life, just as you did with the De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight, you NEED to start a grassroots movement about getting the old HBO music back. I mean, that theme DEFINED what prizefighting is! They've already ditched the silly shadowboxing graphic, so how hard could it be?
Great to hear Bute say Andrade deserves a rematch. Buy or sell- Andrade/Bute II takes place this fall if both guys win their upcoming fights??
Very good chance since if Andrade wins April 4 he will be mandatory for the winner of Bute-Zuniga.
Dan is Pacquiao a 5-Division Champ or a 4 only?
Five. Five. Five. Anyone who does not recognize his lineal claim at 126 pounds is an absolute moron. Manny won titles at 112 (WBC and lineal), 122 (IBF), 126 (lineal), 130 (WBC and lineal) and 135 (WBC). If he beats Hatton, he will be a six-division titleholder and the first fighter in boxing history to be lineal champion in four divisions. Those are the facts.
Dear Bob Arum, When you decide to have your prized middleweight defend his titles against a worthy opponent please let us know. Until then we will have to decline any of his fights that involve him fighting taxi drivers and wannabes. Oh, and we did a little checking around. There seems to be a pretty good fighter over in Europe named Abraham. Maybe check into that. Granted -- he's not as big of a name as Rubio -- but then again -- who really is???? Yours Truly, HBO and Showtime
So much for that Roy Jones' Boxing/MMA card. Apparently Shamrock got caught doping. I think that's the gods way of saying that events like that are uncool. Personally, I want to watch boxing when I go to a boxing event. If I ever want to watch MMA then I'll go to an MMA event.
Dan, did you watch Hozumi Hasegawa vs Vusi Malinga? The fight video is now on YouTube.
Yes, I did. Impressive.
Your prediction for Vitali/Gomez?
I like Vitali to eventually stop Gomez.
Dan, been following you forever...out of all the Prospect of the Year fighters, who has been the most disappointing.
I've named one every year since 2000 when I was at USA TODAY and by far the most disappointing is Francisco Bojado.
What happened to Calvin Brock?
Calvin retired because of an eye injury.
Today is the 10th anniversary of Holyfield-Lewis I. Is that the worst decision you have ever seen?
Not as bad as Whitaker-Chavez but pretty close.
Will HBO add an entertaining fight to May 9th or is it just Dawson/Tarver?
Alfredo Angulo may also return on that show.
We've seen Jermain Taylor talk the talk, now hopefully he can Froch the Froch...
OK, Freaks, great chat today. Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy the notebook, blogs and rankings and enjoy the fights this weekend. Talk to you next week. Peace.
