Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:49 AM)

MW here to get started a little early. Beautiful day here in the 'Burgh-hopefully it is wherever you are as well. Let's roll.

Mathis (West Branch, Iowa

What would be chiefs smartest draft choice?

Matt Williamson
  (11:51 AM)

That isn't an easy question to answer in my opinion. I still really think Crabtree should be a target (think Moss in NEng), but I seem to be in the minority. A pass rusher is the biggest need without a doubt, but I don't see one worthy of such a high pick. Maybe Raji-make him the NT and then Dorsey to DE? Couldn't go too wrong with one of the OTs-but then you would have to ask him or Albert (both very high draft picks) to move to the right side, which isn't what they are accustomed. When it is all said and done, Curry seems like the most logical guys I suppose.

Nate (DC)

I get the feeling these 3 top QBs are going to get people in the 17-22 range to trade up to the early teens, agree?

Matt Williamson
  (11:53 AM)

Yeah, I could see that. As you might know, I really am high on Sanchez, but lets just assume that Stafford goes very high, Sanchez then goes in the 8-12 neighborhood-then I think the rush starts to get that third (& final) QB who can be considered a franchise type guy.

Matt (East Lansing Michigan)

What is the most likely trade the lions would pull off to get cutler?

Matt Williamson
  (11:53 AM)

How about #20 straight up for Cutler?

Kevin (Waukee, IA)

What is the Vikings front office thinking? They draft Jackson a couple years ago, sign Rosenfels this offseason, and now their rumored to be interested in Cutler.

Matt Williamson
  (11:55 AM)

Well, for years, they have put small band aids on a gaping wound. Cutler certainly has his faults-and is not a sure thing-but he would be a massive upgrade over what they have been playing with and obviously should help Minny to win right away. However, his pension for making poor decisions and forcing throws makes him a not-so-great fit on a team that should stress D and their running game.

james (pitt)

What are the eagles most likely to do with their first round picks? use them or trade them?

Matt Williamson
  (11:56 AM)

Boldin seems like the only target they would use the picks to trade for-& I would be very much in favor of that. But, if they keep the picks, I think Moreno will be high on their wish list. Oher or Britton at OT also could be a real possibility. I like Nicks and Britt for the Eagels as well. One guy who should be very hard for them to pass on is Pettigrew though.

Kevin (Waukee, IA)

Don't you think the Packers would be better off with Julius Peppers than Aaron Kampman at OLB? I just can't see Kampman playing in the 3-4. Think they could swap players?

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

I do think that Peppers is a better fit at OLB than Kampman-no doubt. And...now is a great time for me to make my rant about how this is a terrible move for GBay to move to a 3-4 for just so many reasons. Anyways, a swap? I am sure there are legistics as to why this wouldn't work out, but on the surface, it actually makes a lot of sense. Car would have a gaping hole at DE if/when they move Peppers.

bob. jerseyyyy [via mobile]

hey matt u think maybin from penn state can provide that outside rush green bay needs in their new scheme.any otha playas u see them getin at nine.

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

I really have mixed feelings on Maybin. One year wonder with very questionable instincts....which doesn't bode well for a position change or ability to read the play from a coverage standpoint. However, edge rushers do not grow on trees and his first step quickness is excellent. Wouldn't take him at 9 though.

james (pitt)

Do you think the Eagles would draft Pettigrew and a solid OT. Then use one of their 4th or 5th round picks combined with their second to move up and draft one of the solid backs left over?

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

One thing that we know is that Andy Reid very much values big men. If they went Pettigrew with their first pick and Britton with that second first rounder, I would be all in favor of that. Could see it happening as well. Then...maybe you consider trading up for someone like Robiskie, who would be an excellent fit or a RB who starts to fall. But, if you stay put after getting those top two, you are still going to get adaquate help at WR and esp RB with a player like Brown from NC ST or Jennings from Liberty for example. Philly has a lot of cards in their hand right now.

Nate (Crosby ND)

Is there any way the Cards would part with Matt Leinart in some sort of a three team trade with the Broncos? Possibly Culter to the Lions, Pick number 20 to the Cards, and Leinart to the Broncos.

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

Hmmm-not sure what the cap ramifications would be on something like that, since Zona did give ML a big signing bonus after drafting him, but is that a good deal for Denver? I assume there would be more to the deal and I am not ready to dismiss Leinhart as a bust, but I would want some picks along with ML if I were to trade Cutler. As for Zona-they should do it. Would HAVE to find another QB-preferably a young one and maybe a vet as well-considering Warner's fragility and age.

Ralph (Northern Ireland)

Hi Matt I always enjoy your chats the most. As a Bucs fan do you think #19 straight up would be enough to get Cutler, or would a #4 or #5 be required as well? With him in our team our offense suddenly looks very good

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

I like him going to TBay. They have the money to lock him up as well. Hard to say on the compensation, but I do think it benefits TBay that they have the pick right ahead of Detroit. If they were to complete a deal similiar to what you suggest, they would be set on O. D still worries me and it doesn't look any better on paper now than it did last season.

luke (bellingham, wa)

What's your take on Seattle's draft plans?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Was leaning towards Raji there for a while, as Ruskell likes to take D players from big schools early in the draft, but they now just added C Redding and have a lot of bodies at DT. They are still a mystery to me. What I don't know for sure if just how much longer do they think that W Jones has left. Locklear is fine at RT. Is now the time to get a guy like Monroe? Wouldn't blame them and I suppose Locklear could move to OG. Now with Housh in the fold, Crabtree is probbaly out...or is he? Sanchez?

chauncey (teaneck)

Is Kenny Britt the pick for the giants?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Sure could be. WR is far and away need #1. I do think one more LB would be a welcome addition as well and looking at team needs, WR is going to be in much more demand on DDay than LB, so maybe someone like Cushing happens to fall into their lap. OT could be a consideration as well and I think a 2nd round TE could be in the cards, but overall, I hear ya loud and clear with Britt.

cody (huntsville, alabama)

i think that the giants will grab nicks or britt with their pick

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Nicks is a guy whose stock is probably higher than many realize. One of the more NFL ready WRs out there. I bet he goes pretty high and NYG has zero shot at him.

Steiny (NYC)

Despite everything, won't Andre Smith be drafted in the top 10 anyway?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

Perhaps. The guy just has a skill set that is very difficult to find. He moves bodies. Can't see him getting past SD for sure. But...he REALLY should have wore a shirt during his 40 yard dash at his Pro Day! Wow.

Corey (Philadelphia)

Moreno, Beanie Wells, Pettigrew: Any chance the Eagles land any of em?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Sure. Maybe two of the three. There is a lot to like about Wells, but to me, Moreno should be more sought after by Philly-just because of his ability to catch the ball. Philly is going to throw. Their RB has to be effective in the passing game.

Nick (NYC)

Do you think the jets may trade for cutler or trade up for sanchez?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Check out my article in the AFC East blog section about Cutler going to any of those four teams. He surely would be an upgrade for NYJ, but is he want R Ryan wants behind center? His risk taking and turnovers would drive Ryan nuts. Like I said, I love Sanchez and would be very aggressive to land him if I were in charge of NYJ, TBay, etc.

david (baltimore)

hey what do you think the ravens are going to do in the draft and in free agency

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

O Pace is still an option from what I understand, but overall, it is time to focus on the draft. I would expect them to target smaller guys (WR and CB) early in the draft now that they signed LJ Smith.

MJ (Boston)

What are the differences with Jay Cutler and Jeff George, besides the funky mullet and 70's porn-stache?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Have heard those comparisons and there is certainly some validity to them. Cutler has not exactly acted incredibly mature during this whole situation either. Still, he has had success at this level, has every physical tool that you look for and has to be considered safer than someone like Freeman or Stafford. Got to take risks to acquire a possible franchise QB-no way around that.

Chris, Minny

Is Heyward-Bey going to be the next Troy Williamson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Has some strikingly similiar qualities, huh? Was very underused at Maryland though and I do think he is getting better and better. Catches the ball better than Williamson (no relation) though by a large margin. When you play WR, catching the football is rather important.

Matt (Chicago)

Jerry Angelo has said that he is "fixated on stabilizing the quarterback position". Apparently signing Basanez is the stabilization they had in mind. Why have they not at least called Denver??? The 18th overall pick and Orton would be a nice deal. If he's on record saying that and doesn't call Denver, what does that tell you?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

You may have answered your own question. He seems to be actiing like the economy has hurt his team more than most. Shallow pockets.

Doug (North Carolina)

Matt, any chance Jay Cutler ends up in Carolina in a trade for Peppers or someone else?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

Wow. Not sure how they swing that with Delhomme in the fold, but Car does need to start thinking long term at that position and Denver surely could use Peppers.

AB (DC)

Since Vinny Cerrato is telling everyone who'll listen that the Redskins don't want Cutler isn't it basically a done deal he'll be in DC in '09?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

You are very wise. Seems like a perfect fit, huh? Actually, Wash/Zorn needs to find a quick release, quick decision making QB who doesn't make many mistakes. Campbell isn't that guy and neither is Cutler.

Cameron (Boise, ID)

Hey Matt! Enough with all the Cutler talk! Who do you think the Chargers take with there first pick? Would it not make sense to trade it for more late round picks?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

I look at SD's roster and think that they need quality more than quantity, so I say stay there at pick the best OT (Smith/Oher) avaliable and plug him in on the right side. SS is another big need, but not one to fill in the first round.

Stephen (Graves)

What is going on with the Browns and the Broncos?!?! There are all kinds of rumors right now in Ohio about Cutler going to Detroit and Cleveland trading Anderson or Quinn to the Broncos?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Have heard those as well and I could certainly see why the Browns' new staff would not be completely on board with Quinn or esp DA.

Doug (North Carolina)

Who in you opinion, is the best defensive end in this year's draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Orakpo. Would like to see him give 100% on a more consistent basis, but the other guys have a lot of questions about them as well. With this draft more than any other in recent memory, I find myself focusing on each of these top players' negative traits. Is it just that this draft isn't up to par or I am getting cynical in my old age? Probably both.

Tedy Blessed (Arkansas)

For him to show how great of a QB he is Orton needs another targert in The Chi. This will also free up hester. Do you think Marvin Harrison or they will draft a wide out.

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

I don't see Marvin being a good fit there at all. Remember he came from a timing based passing attack in a dome recieving the ball from a HOF QB. That isn't the case in Chicago. But yes, they must find a true #1 WR. If you look to the draft and take someone like Heyward-Bey or Nicks, you still have to expect a rookie learning curve. Holt? Much like Marvin, he had his best days in a similiar dome/rythm situation. Big problem for Chi-Town.

cody (huntsville, alabama)

do you think its a better chance for buffalo to grab pettigrew to build up that pass offense alongside owens and evans?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Maybe, but that is high for Pettigrew. I bet they like him a lot though because they can also run behind him in short yardage situations and Pettigrew would also help their OTs in protection. Good fit there and remember, TO only signed a one year deal.

MIke (Houston)

Would this be a good draft for the Texans...Cushing in rd.1...Brace in rd. 2...and S.Greene or A.Brown in rd. 3.

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

I like it a lot and expect Houston to finally get over that 8-8 hump next year. Not so sure that Brace will be there in the middle of round 2 though. Probably a lot of people who have the same idea as you concerning Brace.

Kevin (New York)

Was it smart for the Giants to keep Plax? If not who should they grab???

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Not sure that they have a whole lot of other options. Boldin would be the only other guy who would really interest me-but are the Cards dealing him or not?

Chris, MN

Three way trade: Cutler to the Vikings, Quinn to Denver, Browns receive #22 and third rd pick from Vikes? Far fetched?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Denver can get more for Cutler than just Quinn and Clev would be getting too much for Quinn in that scenerio.

Brad (MS)

I agree that this is a weak draft. There could be value late in the 1st, though, if Moreno and Petitgrew are available.

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

That is a good point. Really just a bad year to be a bad football team picking high is more like it.

Lawrence (Barstow Ca.)

How do you think the Steelers will spend their pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Some names to consider: Alphonso Smith, Darius Butler, Alex Mack, Max Unger, Eric Wood, Ziggy Hood. Wouldn't argue with any of those, although they might be able to trade down a few slots to get one. WR is also in the equation. Would consider trading up for Britton as well.

jake (Mayville, WI)

what do you think the colts will do in the draft

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

DT is the biggest need and someone like Jerry, Brace or Hood would make a lot of sense, but Indy is a team that uses first round picks on players to surround Manning....so I am betting on WR. Even a guy like Robiskie could fit their style. A sleeper pick could be at RB.

mojo (Castle Rock, CO)

Suppose Marshall gets 8 games. Do the Broncos hold the line with Royal and Stokely, or do they draft WR at some point?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Tough situation because they just need so much more help on D. They did sign Gaffney, who might be enough to hold down the fort and Scheffler is a good recieving TE.

Cody Philly

Matt, Bucs give 1st and 5th picks plus rights to Jake the snake back to Denver, everyones happy right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

LOL-The rights to Jake the Snake? Why don't they throw in a box of kicking tees as well? Maybe a copy of the TBay Bucs' 1983 NFL Films Season in Review to seal the deal?

gary kubiak

i worked with this cutler kid before. hes not bad..should i trade schaub and a 3rd rounder for him? you think denver will bite on this?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

No reason to do such thing Gary. Stick with your guy. Things are looking up in Houston. Don't rock the boat.

Mike (Boston)

Has any QB ever been more spoiled than Peyton? Must be rough to have 1st rounders everywhere. I'd like to see him have to play with the ragtag receivers Brady did for all but one season.

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Manning also plays in a dome. Not bashing Manning here-very big fan. But you bring up good points. Indy has also been quite wise with the way they have designed their team around Peyton.

Jr (Boston)

Do you the see the Pats packaging their 1st and one of their second to try to move up in the draft if the player they want is in the teens?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Very well could. They are not big on giving rookies huge contracts, but if there is one stud who starts to fall, they could surely be aggressive.

gary kubiak

thanks matt..youre right. i dont need to pull a josh mcdaniels down here in houston.

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

Yeah, what if you start talking trade, it doesn't go through and all of a sudden Schaub gets all offended? Joking of course, but to me, the crime that McDaniels and company committed was not landing Cassel. If you are going to open that door, you have to dive through it at 100%. Can't just dip your big toe in the water. Dive in.

Nick (SLC)

How would you grade AJ Smiths performance so far in SD? Should he be let go?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Don't have to like him, but the guy is top notch at his job. What teams in the NFL have had a better roster than SD over the past five years or so? It seems like they enter most of the recent drafts without glaring needs.

Ryan Easton

I just heard a rumor on the radio, Cutler to Washington for Cambell. any truth to this rumor?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

No idea. LOTs of rumors right now surrounding Cutler.

JB-MN

Bigger mistake, Sanchez not returning to school for another year, or A. Smith at the combine?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Smith by far.

Brian (Cleveland)

Any truth to the current trade rumors between the Browns and Broncos? I heard Quinn & Rogers for Cutler and all master copies of "The Drive" which will be destroyed immediately upon arriving in Berea.

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Sounds fair

True Mike, NJ

Besides Curry, who are the best 4-3 strongside linebackers in the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

I see that as Cushing's role. Many want to project him to a 3-4 OLB because of his size, but he really isn't a top shelf pass rusher.

Scott (SD)

I have not been impressed by AJ Smith's decision making. He gave up way to much for average starters Weddle and Hester. Waters and Siler were supposed to be furture starters, but they cut Waters and signed Burnett. And Cromartie was a one year wonder in 07.

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Cromartie had a hip problem-wait and see on him. He was quite good two years ago. I agree very much on Hester in particular. But bro, you are complaining about a few mid round picks here and there. Pull up the Lions' draft over the past ten years! Everyone misses on guys here and there.

Rich (Bayonne, NJ)

If Maclin or Crabtree are there, the Niners have to take him at #10 right? The they can draft either Sintim or English as an OLB or Moore or Delmas at Safety.

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

The only reason I could see them pasing on Crabtree/Maclin would be to nab a OT to play opposite Staley. But, With Oak and Jax picking ahead of of SF, I don't expect either of those WRs to be available.

John Boy (Cincinnati)

How bout a Bengals question? I think it's either Crabtree with Ocho leaving or OT with Levi taking a walk...

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Yeah, hard to argue with that. I like Crabtree more than the OT they will likely get, but I also see OT as the bigger need since they have Henry, 85, Coles, Caldwell and Simpson, who has been slow to grow. Don't discount the need for a pass rusher either. Cincy really struggled getting to opposing QBs last year. Also, if Raji is there, you just might have to nab him, although their DTs are promising.

Browns Fans (Cleveland)

Make sure Scott (SD) knows we passed on Tomlinson, McNabb, AP and many more.

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Exactly

pattydread (rocky mountains)

Wouldn't the Packers be wise to keep adding weapons to the franchise Aaron Rodgers--like the colts have done over the years for Peyton?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Yes and they have done that. Didn't see the benefits last year, but they used a first round pick on a WR and another early pick on a TE, Finly. Will see the benefits of those picks going forward. Also, don't forget, Peyton and Rodgers play in very different climates, which comes into play heavily at the end of the season and come playoff time.

Todd (Cinci)

I partially agree with your analysis of the Bengals DTs. Sims has a bright future, but Peko is bad.

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Don't agree on Peko. He certainly isn't flashy, but he holds the point.

Kevin (New York)

What team is most likely to pick up MArvin Harrison? wouldnt that be a great pick up for the Jets??

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

He and Holt are tough for me. Tenn? Would assume that neither player wants to go to a team that isn't a contender. Carolina? I suppose the Jets wouldn't be a terrible fit.

Jay Atlanta

Is there any hope for the Raiders? & Any Chance Cutler ends up with the bears?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Chi is a real good fit for him in my opinion, but I can't say that I expect their decision makers to get real aggressive to obtain him. Hope for the Raiders? I really don't see it. But, they do get to play KC and Den each twice next year!

Paul (Albany, OR)

Before folks start picking on Manning for the things he benefits from can anybody remember how many games he led them to victory with a defense that resembled a spaghetti strainer? Brady has always had a very solid defense to assist him. Not bashing him, but there are many facets to that discussion.

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Many facets. One thing I am sure of though is that we all should tell our kids and the next generation about these two. I wouldn't be surprised-when it is all said and done-that they are right on top when talking about the best players to ever play the position. Enjoy

CC (Atlanta)

Will Cushing and/or Matthews be there for the Falcons at #24?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Maybe both. Wouldn't go that direction though. I can live with their LBs and would prefer that they got more DL help. Safety is another big need, but not that early.

Mike (Indy)

Would E.Brown be a good choice for the Green Bay defense at #9? If he's there.

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Seems like someone who could very well end up in GBay. But...to focus on his negatives: FSU DEs have been actrocious in the NFL. He is shorter and slower than expected. He got most of his sacks in just a few games. He would be making a position switch and needs to prove that he can play the game in reverse. I do not doubt that Brown is a good pass rusher and he gets off the ball very well. He might end up being a fine pro and I wouldn't be overly critical of GBay if they did in fact make that move....but it isn't a sure bet!

Kevin (New York)

I know its still early, but which team is going to sneek up on everyone this season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Houston comes to mind immediatly. Does New Orleans qualify?

Luke (Atlanta)

I heard there is talk of a three way trade between Denver, Washington and Kansas City. Ulitmately, the Skins would end up with Cutler. You think there is any truth to this?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Who knows. A lot of threeway rumors going on right now. Hmmm...

Jared in AZ

Charger fans will miss watching Cutler sob on the bench twice a year. Oh Well!

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Indeed. SD is SO far ahead of those other teams in the AFC West right now. They are going to moonwalk to a playoff spot.

josh mcdaniels

hi matt. quick question. you think pat bowlen misses coach shanahan right now? i dont know about him but i kind of do.

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

If I were a Denver fan, I would miss Shanny.

Eric (Sioux City)

Packer fans can only hope E.Brown works out as well as their Jamal Reynolds pick. That was a good trade, though, Hasselbeck to move up five spots for Reynolds.

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

...or Andre Wadsworth. Kamerion Wimbley is in that discussion as well. There are others.

Nate (Madison)

With so many questionmarks at DE/OLB for the 3-4 format at least around pick #9, wouldn't Green Bay almost be better trading down and getting another pick and filling more then one need on defense with those picks?

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Wouldn't argue with that. Did I mention that switching to a 3-4 is simply a terrible decision for the Packers?

CC (Atlanta)

Uh Matt... SD was 8-8 with that team last year. You seem to forget that Norv Turner is STILL the head coach.

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

That is an excellent point and he very well could Norv it all up, but the other teams in that division are quite horrible right now.

Will in Chatt, TN

could you see the Titans trading for Cutler, maybe adding Vince Young in the deal?

Matt Williamson
  (1:02 PM)

Thought about Tenn, but not sure you mess with a team that was a contender a year ago. As for VY, I am not sure he has any more value than that bag of kicking tees that TBay was going to throw in for Cutler.

Matt Williamson
  (1:03 PM)

Okay folks. I am about Cutlered out. I really hope something happens with him soon. More excited to talk about the new fit than all these scenerios. But, I am out. Take care all.
