Great to be back chatting with the Nation! We're talkin' all things Mixed martial arts for the next hour. NCAA Tournament games on in the background...couldn't be better... Fire away!
I heard that Miguel Torres wants to fight in the UFC. What weight would he come in at...155? Do you see him as potentially being a threat at that weight class?
Miguel Torres would probably begin and end his UFC career at 155. And yes, I see him as a threat in the UFC lightweight division.
I'm glad lyoto machida is getting the fight against evans. Joe Rogan lead us to believe from Machidas last fight that he was next for a title shot. Who is favored in this one?
No Vegas line yet that I have seen, Avlis. I would imagine Rashad Evans would open as a slight favorite. I am happy Machida is getting the title shot. Well-deserved.
Great job Jon! If the light heavyweight division had a March Madness, who would win?
I kind of wanted to go back to the last UFC showing. I sent a message last week but didnt get answered or posted. I wasnt impressed with Carwin. I thought he threw a lucky punch that landed. He was getting dominated in that fight with Gonzaga. It looked to me that Gonzaga got too comfortable after seeing how easy he was winning and put his hands down. If they finght again Gonzaga wins because he wont make that mistake again. What do you think? Sorry for the long post.
Gonzaga admitted as much on MMA Live last week. I asked him what was his biggest criticism of his own performance...He said 'where do I begin?' He was losing the round for sure, but I wouldn't call the punch lucky. It landed flush, and his power is off the charts. Not sure the UFC is in any rush to grant Gonzaga a rematch.
Hey Jon where do you see Maynard in a year. He looked really sharp against Miller
I thought Maynard was the best he's been against Jim Miller. He just needs to keep winning. But a lot of Gray's fate - in terms of a title shot - is tied to what happens with other guys. If Sean Sherk and Diego Sanchez keep winning, they'll get title shots before Maynard.
Hey Jon, are we ever going to see Big John back in the Octagon?
I think so. Officiating is too big an issue right now across the sport to keep arguably the No. 1 ref out of (inarguably) the No. 1 promotion.
MMA live up early today! Jonny boy how long before maia gets a run at the spider?
Yes, Nate, Episode #45 of MMA Live is already up! Pat Miletich and Stephan Bonnar live in-studio. It was great getting to know Miletich a little bit. As for Maia, he could very well get Anderson Silva before the year is out.
Hey jon. Great show. I hear a lot of people favoring Machida in his upcoming fight with Rashad. Do you think Machida's counter punching win by decision style (absent his last fight) may be neutralized over a five round fight? Rashad clearly lost the first two rounds against Forrest, but he eventually was able to catch him and finish him off.
I agree with a lot of that, David. Really intrigued by this match-up. I still lean towards Rashad- I think his cardio is better, as is his power and his wrestling. Not sure this thing goes the distance, either.
Hey Jon, I watched the Shamrock/Diaz videos, where Diaz comes out and gives the finger. Frank seems a bit arrogant, but Diaz is a punk, just like his brother. Why do people like them? I hope Frank knocks him out. And Bobby Lashley fights this weekend. You think if he dominates that he will maybe see some UFC fights? He called out Randy and Brock.
Frank Shamrock is sort of a bigger-than-life kind of character. I've always thought he's been great for the sport. And say what you want about the Diaz brothers, but they are polarizing and move the needle. You are right they have a lot of fans, and non-supporters alike. I expect Lashley to steamroll Jason Guida Saturday night and yes, eventually end up in the UFC.
What do you make of all the possible counter programming to UFC 100? Affliction on free tv and possibly a Floyd Mayweather Jr. PPV? Wow that would be a wonderful night for a combat sports fan!
Decisions, decisions. I think it's interesting, Ben. If I'm Affliction, I don't see any added benefit to waiting a week and staging a card on 7/18. Might as well try to get your 80,000+ PPV buys and a solid gate. And boxing needs Floyd Mayweather to come out of retirement. Talk about moving the needle...
You gonna buy the march badness PPV? only 29.95. I wanna see lashley.
I would think most hardcore MMA fans would buy the card, if for no other reason to see Bobby Lashley.
Why is it every time someone writes and article or interviews Bobby Lashley there seems to be the impression of a pending UFC title fight with Brock Lesnar? Do you think the constant publicity could hurt his popularity if he were to get a shot?
It's funny, Kevin. It's actually difficult when talking about Lashley's potential to not bring up Brock Lesnar because of some obvious comparisons. I don't think the pub hurts Lashley in any way. The chat queue is a good indicator of the buzz Lashley already has.
Thanks Jon. And for the record, I actually like Frank Shamrock. Maybe it is the arrogance. The Diaz brothers, heck I expect them to shoot snot rockets on someone they beat. Anyway, with all the Greasegate talk do you think that the Dana just sets up a GSP/Penn 3? I hope not, grease or not Penn got globbered.. Tell Kenny to silence the critics!
I like Frank Shamrock, too. Always have. No interest in GSP-Penn III. And I don't think the UFC wants to see it anytime soon, no matter what numbers it could do. Perhaps down the line, but not soon.
Well my bracket's already off to a bad start...glad to have some MMA chat to take my mind off of it!
I hear ya, J.R. It's hard to chat and watch NCAA hoops at the same time. Wondering how Cal-State Northridge is holding up...
Do you think BJ Penn will ever just shut his mouth and fight? He seems to be getting passed by in the elite MMA world due to his lack of dedication....thoughts?
As we say seemingly every week in the chat, BJ Penn calls his own shots, by and large. He doesn't need to fight 3-4 times per year. That's no secret. But it is a bit annoying that he seems to be able to dictate where, when and who he fights? I'd like Joe Silva to tell him he's fighting Kenny Florian at UFC 102. End of discussion.
BJ Penn is (a) being a big baby (b) trying to avoid Florian (c) looking for an excuse when he loses to Florian (d) all of the above
Hard for me to answer this question because I know Kenny so well and have only met BJ twice. All I will say is that it's a bad time for anyone to be fighting Kenny Florian.
Hey Jon. Glad to be back in the chat. With the entire WWE-like saga that has gone on between Shamrock and Lashley, and now Jason Guida of all people stepping in, do you think this hurts the legitamacy of Lashley being a real fighter and not just a side-show?
Hi Collin. I don't think this will hurt Lashley's image. He just needs to smash Guida and get back in the cage as often as his body will allow. Even though Guida isn't even a heavyweight, I'd rather see Lashley fight him than Ken Shamrock, who is old and a bit delusional, in my mind.
Hi Jon, Any word on when to UFC is coming to Philly?
I've only heard what you've heard, that it will be in 2009. I'm sure you'll get a big card within a calendar year.
Memphis by 10!
Is there any chance that we could see Anderson Silva moving up to 205 to take on Machida in the future? What would you think, since i think their styles are similar, with the exception of Machida's throws and Silva's weak takedown defense.
They are friends, and neither would ever truly want the fight. I do think Silva eventually finds his way up to 205, but that move could be delayed if Machida is the champion.
Jon, Memphis stepped up in the end sorry buddy. Anyways what are your thoughts on Forrest Griffin being the cover boy on the UFC video game?
I can't really think of a better guy to choose for the cover. So I have no problem with it.
King Mo says that he is looking to submit his opponent tomorrow (Ryo Kawamura)... do you feel that a young fighter trying to prove that he has an all-around game can make him more susceptible to losing a fight he should win?
Sure I do, Jim. King Mo can talk about the submission all he wants. But wants the action begins, he will just be trying to win the fight.
vitor belfort has always been a great fighter when he is focused. i would love to see the "real" vitor against anderson silva. if the "real" vitor shows up i think he wins. your thoughts on this. by the way, great job on the show!
A lot of folks agree with you Brian. Vitor is a free agent, at last check. I wouldn't pick him to beat Silva, but he'd certainly be a huge test for him. And thanks for watching MMA Live man.
what upcoming fight are most excited to see?
As always, there are a lot to choose from. I will be watching Chieck Kongo closely at UFC 97, because I think his title shot may be around the corner. Also curious to see Sean Sherk-Frankie Edgar at UFC 98. But at the top of my list right now: Strikeforce on April 11th- Shamrock vs. Diaz.
Jon Fitch vs. Paulo Thiago... any chance winner gets title shot (vs. GSP/Alves winner)?
I'm always curious how many people want to see a second fight between Fitch and St. Pierre. I was in Minneapolis that night and, although I appreciate Fitch's toughness, I think it would be hard to sell the rematch. Of course, Thiago Alves will have a whole lot to say about that anyway. Also, Paulo Thiago is nowhere near a title shot. I don't care if he beats Fitch in 2 minutes.
Do you think Karo Parisyans suspension (9 months and 32,000 dollars) was a bit extreme ?
No. Watched the entire hearing, courtesy of Steve Cofield's Yahoo! blog. Thought the punishment was just.
Hey Jon, can't make the chat today, but figured I'd let everyone else know. The Karo / Kim decision got overturned, but my book only recognizes judges decisions and not overturnings of them, so I did not recieve my investment back, but maybe some other people out there can get some of their money back.
Wanted to post this from earlier this afternoon. Some people had e-mailed about whether or not their bets on Dong-Hyun Kim would be credited after the Parisyan ruling. Thanks, Craig.
thiago silva vs forrest griffin.man are you as excited about this as me?
Probably not as jacked up as you, Sammy. But I always like a fight in which both guys need a win (both coming off losses).
Hey Jon, first time here but I love reading your chats. Do you think that PJ Penn is taking this to far with GSP. This is becoming crazy. And when is BJ going to fight Ken-Flo?
Thanks for stopping, by Greg. I do think Penn is exhausting every last avenue in this Greasegate situation. I don't know that I can take reporting on it anymore. As for when he'll fight Kenny, my best guess is UFC 102.
Beavers were once the size of bears. You're welcome.
Do you think Affliction is just trying to go out in a blaze of glory with the rumor of them going head to head with UFC 100?
Could be one last ditch effort, but I don't know. A big key for Affliction is retaining Fedor Emelianenko after his next fight, win or lose. Who else can it build around? Tito Ortiz perhaps, but he'll cost you.
Any thoughts on the Sengoku card? Which featherweight tourney do you care more about, them or Dream?
I wouldn't say I 'care' more about one or the other. I am fired up that Sengoku is live on HDNet when I get home from work at 3 AM ET. I haven't seen much of Hatsu Hioki. Looking forward to his fight with Chris Manuel. Miletich told me keep an eye on LC Davis. A few others worth watching, too. And King Mo is must-see TV.
A few people here have been talking about a potential Affliction card in July... are there any rumored bouts attached?
It would be Emelianko-Barnett in the main event. Could also see other top heavyweights- Arlovski perhaps, Tim Sylvia, although he's got some extracurricular stuff to deal with apparently. Din Thomas at 145, I'd expect.
What do you think of the announcement of Forrest vs Thiago Silva? Should be explosive
Chicago is loving that fight announcement!
Hey Jon, Who comes up with the titles for the UFC events? Some are self-explanatory like UFC 96: Jackson v. Jardine, while others have nicknames, such as UFC 97: Redemption. Is the title referring to the Iceman? Why bother with the nicknames? UFC 99 is titled "The Comeback" even though it is the first time the UFC will be in Germany. If Dana and Co are going to keep the escalating numerals attached to said events, I think they can stop using the nicknames. What do you think?
I've thought about that, Ken. There isn't really a method to it. When the UFC feels compelled to add a slogan, it does so. But it is interesting. They called UFC 90: SIlva vs. Cote, yet won't call 97: SIlva vs. Leites.
Any thoughts on Big John's recent interviews. I thought his take on the origional concept of "intelligent defense" shed light on how it is applied today, his definition includes a fighters mental will to fight instead of just not moving.
Good question. I think one of the most important parts of being a referee is knowing who's fighting. More experienced fighters who have proven their toughness should be given the benefit of the doubt more than, say, someone making his Octagon debut.
Do you really think that Cheick Kongo is really that close to a title shot in UFC's eyes... he fighting Antoni Hardonk.
I know there is a case to be made against Kongo (loss to Herring at UFC 82), but who should be ahead of him to fight the Lesnar-Mir winner? Carwin? Velasquez? Couture-Nogueira winner?
Jon, Whats up? What are your thoughts on TUF Winner Efrain Escudero? The kid is undefeated and very talented, Do u think he has a chance in a very stacked lightweight division amongst the likes of BJ,Ken-Flo, Sherk, Diego?
I like Escudero. He's just in the wrong division if he wants a shot at UFC gold anytime soon. One loss would be hugely detrimental.
With the UFC cutting a lot of roster spots I have two suggestions, Stevenson and Karo. Joe Daddy hasnt won a big fight in a while and Karo cheated comes in out of shape regularly and hasnt beat a top ten guy in years.
I'm sure the UFC brass has discussed both guys as potential cuts. But both have some name recognition and a decent following. Stevenson would have to be on the brink if he loses his next fight. Parisyan just signed an 8-fight deal.
Is it just me or is a Greg Jackson training camp THE place to be for a professional figher right now?
Hard to argue with the success. As you know, there are several other top camps...ATT, AKA, Sityodtong, etc. But I would put Jackson's camp at No. 1.
can lashley actually pose a threat to brock or randy..i'm not a doubter i just think he needs more time to advance
Let me get back to you next week. I have only seen 41 seconds of footage.
Am I the only one who herd fedor call out Brock
Nope. Fedor wants the best. And he wants to halt Lesnar's momentum with MMA fans right where it is.
Hey Jon. What would be next for Chuck if he wins at 97? Seems early for a title shot but I would assume they may try to make a fight that sells. Maybe Forrest?
It very much depends on the performance. I would like to see him fight Griffin or Stephan Bonnar.
I was wondering... do you think there are any clauses in a fighter's contract (thinking Karo and his 8-fight deal) about suspensions?
As far as I know, there are not, Jim. The UFC can cut Parisyan anytime without penalty. Very few 100 % guaranteed contracts that I know of.
This long layoff really hurts Lesnar. He needs as much time in the cage as possible. I realize having 2 titles is ridiculous, but if the Mir fight gets postponed again, does Lesnar just fight someone else?
If Frank Mir can't go at UFC 100, they would have to keep Lesnar on the card against someone else. I agree the 8 1/2 month layoff will not help Brock. But Bonnar told me this week to not be so sure. He thinks Lesnar can benefit greatly from more hours in the gym.
Speaking of contracts what are the odds off a fighters union? Now and the future?
Not good at all, and it's unfortunate. The fighters deserve as much.
when will we see brown vs faber 2? is faber the underdog?
In June, Sammy. Great question on whether Faber will be the underdog. I still think Urijah could be the slight favorite, and I'd likely bet the other way.
Jon - love the chats, and my first ever question! Any updates on the WEC's plans to make the Faber/Brown fight a PPV? Thanks...
I would be shocked if it wasn't a PPV. WEC executives and fighters alike have spoken openly about it as an eventuality, as has Dana White.
Dana just called and told me to keep my mouth shut!
Yeah he did.
Seems like Jason guida is just skating by on his last name. He embarassed his brother by coming in overweight to TUF, then lost to a can on the Adreniline MMA show. Now he is trying to say cause Lashly was in WWE that he is a joke. Last time I checked Lashley's amateur wrestling background is much more impressive then anything Guida has ever done.
You're right. Jason should be very thankful his brother is Clay Guida.
With all the cuts going on in the UFC recently, do you anticipate any big name fighters getting released and if so who do you think is on the hot seat if they dont win soon?
I think the UFC will continue to actively look for fighters to cut. But I also don't think the organization is in any great rush to part with big names. Maybe Joe Stevenson. Some wouldn't even consider him a big name.
Jon, in the spirit of March Madness, can you give us a cinderella fighter coming through the ranks?
Top of my head...Mamed Khalidov out of Poland. He's a middleweight. Last saw him fight Jason Guida under ShoXC banner. Versatile, intense. I'm a fan, although he's not that young. Jon Jones is an obvious answer here.
Whats going on with Heath Herring? its been a while since his last fight vs brock.
Fighting up-and-comer Cain Velasquez at UFC 99. An extremely important fight in the UFC HW division.
Jon, confused by your answer. Are you saying to would bet that Mike Brown wins the next fight over Faber? I have to disagree. You know I am big Faber fan. And there is a nice video clip of a Hughes/GSP fight showing the corner man for Hughes going from head down the shoulder and back with vasoline.. NICE!!!
I am saying that I would bet Mike Thomas Brown if he is an underdog. If Brown was a favorite, I may go Faber. I always play dogs, and I'm torn on the outcome of the fight.
How much talk goes on about MMA around ESPN headquarters (not counting between the MMA Live hosts)?
More and more each day.
c-mon jon no smoking joe villasenor today?
Thanks for saving us. Smokin' Joe...VILLASENOR! He's fighting on the May Strikeforce card, I believe. No opponent yet.
Do you know how many fights King Mo has left in Sengoku? Would love to see him fight in the US some time soon.
Not sure his contract situation. Feel free to send the question to email@example.com and I will chase it for you.
My friend said Machida is -175... FAVORITE?
That would make him a favorite, yes. But that may also mean your friend is using recreational drugs. I would be shocked if Machida opened as that big a favorite over the champion. He could be favored, but assuredly not by that margin.
Alright, guys. Gotta cut it a bit short today. Headed to Bristol within the hour to voice some NCAA hoops highlights for espn.com. Go check out Episode #45 of MMA Live- Pat Miletich and Stephan Bonnar live in-studio! Enjoy the NCAA tourney, Sengoku at 3AM ET on HDNet, March Badness Saturday night on PPV, and we'll do it again next week. Thanks for stopping by. Go Lashley. -JA
