Pat if you were head coach/ GM what would your top 3 priorities be for the bucs.
QB, DT and CB. Welcome everyone. Let's get it going.
now that the Saints have Greer, Sharper, and Spicer, there best move is to trade down, accumulate some more picks and then take the best defensive player available with the first pick, right?
I like that idea. Think it would be very wise to try to get another pick or two. Even if they just to the low 20s, they can still get very similar to what they'd get at 14.
Pat, who do you see starting linebacker for the Bucs with Rudd. Will Crowell starts and ???? Geno, Adam, Quincy? And if you had to guess who Tampa would take with their first rd pick, who do you envision it being? Please don't say the DT from Ole Miss, Jerry. Bucs fans want a sexy pick, a WR perhaps.
Crowell will start. You don't sign a guy like him to be a backup. I think Phillips starts at WLB. You don't move a starting safety to have him be a backup LB. You do need a DT -- desperately, but I won't say it.
Assuming the Panthers are done in free agency, what position do you see them drafting in April? Are there any players that they might be looking at?
Done in free agency? They haven't done anything -- yet. Have to see how Peppers sorts out. But it's safe to say they need a DE and a DT.
do you think Mike McKenzie's career is over? any chance he comes back to the Saints at a much lower price? He was always one of my favorites
I think that's a possibility. Maybe in June or July if he doesn't get something else.
Pat, I was wondering, once Carolina trades Peppers (hopefully), what will the cap look like?
$17 million better.
Saints fan here. Wanted to ask why the MM cut, instead of Jason David. Is it age and injuries? I would think JD's knack for getting burnt and larger (I think) contract are a worse burden.
Age and injury part of it. But I think the chance to clear up $4.5 million on McKenzie was the biggest thing.
why is the falcons getting no love in free agency? We sign Mike Peterson whats up with that?
Very quiet in ATL. But that's exactly how Dimitroff said it would be. Still you might see a FA or two (not big ones) brought in before draft.
What are the Falcons priorities now? It seems like they'll want to get more offensive weapons to support the young QB, but their defense has more serious holes.
They've got to go defense all the way through the draft. They don't have many needs on offense. A TE, maybe, but I'm only talking like a mid-round guy.
Hey Pat really enjoy your work. If you were Marty Hurney who would be the number one player on your draft board?
Hmmm ...tough one since Panthers don't even have a first-round pick right now. But let's say they can get one for Peppers. Then, jump ahead of the Falcons and grab GA Tech DE Michael Johnson???
I've heard a lot about Cleveland's Shaun Rogers not participating in workouts ect. What is the likelihood of the Browns shopping him around and the Bucs picking him up?
Something to keep an eye on. That situation's going to start brewing. Tampa would make a lot of sense.
What do you think abut this? The Bucs forget trying to trade for a QB and see what McCown has. Looks like this will be a project year anyway. We can build our team with the def depth that is in the draft this year and take a QB next year (only if Freeman is gone when we pick).
It's probably going to come down to McCown. And that might not be a bad thing.
Do you think that the saints should have waited until after the draft to release Mckenzie? And what is the possibility of adding Ken Lucas to stop Steve Smith?
Love the thought of Smith/Lucas matchup!!! But I think Saints might be done at CB now.
Pat, if Peppers is traded, are the Panthers really prepared to go with Brayton and Johnson?
They'd at least need to get somebody else in the mix.
Though it was a mistake on Josh McDaniels part to even entertain the idea of trading Cutler, do you think McDaniels is regretting it now?
If he's not, he should be.
What do u think about belichiks comments about peppers?..Writing on the wall??? Who has handled this worse..Panthers or Peppers's camp
Don't believe everything you hear this time of year.
Good afternoon Pat. I feel with a few additions through the draft, the Falcons are poised to win the NFC South title...what do you think and wouldn't it make sense to trade down for a couple extra picks this yr.
Would make a lot of sense. Keep in mind, Dimitroff comes from New England/Pioli background and I think that's a real possibility.
Jeremy Shockey in 2009 will be _________.
seen on Bourbon Street a time or two.
Hey Pat, what do you think the chances of carolina trading Peppers for Cutler are?? After such a dissapointing outing from Delhomme in the playoffs, they really need to start looking elsewhere.... right??
I can see it, you can see it, but I don't think Fox and Hurney see it that way.
do you think there is a possibility the saints trade UP and grab aaron curry? also, do you think the saints are set at defensive tackle with sedrick ellis, kendrick clancy, demario pressley, and paul spicer? thanks for your insight, Mr. Yasinkas!
Saints don't have any ammo to trade up. If anything, trade down. And I think you'll see at least ne more DT added.
Hola Pat, Can't Carolina just throw in Delhomme with Peppers to get Cutler? Ahh a girl can dream.
Lots of people dreaming about that. Understand it. But do you think Broncos are dreaming about Delhomme as their QB???
Is there any possibility the Glazers sell the Bucs? They do not seem very interested in putting another winner on the field. Also, in case you were wondering, Millington is just north of Memphis (there is a Navy base there).
Tough to sell them and get full value in this economy.
bet you haven't heard this one before. This is just hypothetical! say the panthers fail miserably this year. what are the chances (percent) the richardson's or Hurney decide to bring in a big name (like Cowher). it would be the end of his contract.
Don't tell me you're rooting for that???
If I was Tampa Bay management, I'd be weary of adding too many former Browns to the roster (McCown, Bryant and Winslow). The Browns have a fairly well documented history of failure.
I saw the question about Rogers to Bucs. What other DT's out there that Tampa could look at in FA? Tank?
Tank or draft. But I say keep an eye on Rogers.
Come on Pat, we go way back. it was hypothetical. Just give me a percent.
Oh, it's always going to come up as long as Cowher's sitting out there. But, heck, Panthers could go 12-4 again and make it moot.
If it is a hard sell then Goodell should be looking into their situation a little closer. They dumped salary and are way under the cap but are not really doing anything with it. Looks like we are headed back to the good ole days of double digit losses!
Look, there's also a salary cap minimum. They have to spend at least $111 million.
you're not going to give me a percent are you? I'll sleep better at night if you give me a number.
I'll give you a number in ...late November.
Hey Pat! Any word on the Falcons getting a CB through FA? Recently cut McKenzie or Rolle?
You could add Ken Lucas to that list. But I'm not sure Falcons are going to go that route. Think they like their young CBs.
do you think the relationship between cutler and the bronco's can be repaired?
No, I think that bridge was torched.
Who should the bucs take in rd 1, peria jerry or ziggy hood? ziggy looks like he could shape up better than jerry.
I think you should always go with a guy named Ziggy.
Have you heard about any potential moves the Saints have in motion as the reason for MM's release?
Actually, I think you can trace it to the Sharper signing. Keep in mind, Sharper contract went in at 4 p.m. Thursday -- same time they cut McKenzie.
Do you think the Bucs have enough ammo to go after Cutler?
No, not anymore. Just posted a lengthy item about that over on the blog.
Will we ever know the exact reason Peppers wants to leave or is it your guess is as good as mine?
Ummm, no I don't think Peppers will ever come out and say it. But read between the lines. There are plenty of clues.
I know there is a salary cap minimum. My big concern is that the team overpays for lesser talent just to reach that. I guess I should just wait and see how things unfold, huh? Maybe we can swing a deal for Rogers, sign Tank and still draft defensive help.
Yeah, it's not over yet. In a lot of ways, you were better of not getting Haynesworth.
The Panthers haven't had a lot of success at WR behind Smith and Moose. Do you see anyone on the roster emerging this year as a solid # 3?
Can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm starting to think Dwayne Jarrett might come on this year. Wow, I said that? Just a hunch.
Keep hearing about Bucs and DT's, but what about DE? We have Adams, but are buts ok with White or are we looking to get a better/faster edge rusher?
Could come in draft. Not that this is going to excited you, but I still think evin Carter comes back.
I assume because of the threat of a significant dead money burden based on what happens with Vick, the Falcons will wait until the FA dust settles and shop for bargains in the discount bins. Any sense how the Falcons may go in the first round of the draft? Defense?
Absolutely, gotta go defense and more than just the first round. Just about every round.
Pat is it safe to say that if the Panthers do not get a 1st round pick or something of that value range Julius Peppers will be in a Panthers uni in 09.
Wouldn't say that at all. Not saying this will happen -- but it's possible Pep could hold out.
Pat come on I'm in history class talking about Communism. Will Comrade Dimitroff be able to get enough pieces in the draft to shore up this defense or will he be reaching out for some free agents?
There will be some free agents. Maybe after the draft. Maybe even before. But it's not going to be any big-money guys.
Pat: Was wondering, can a team go into a negative balance against the cap and then make a retro move to pull the level back to positive? IF not, that means the Saints could have more buckos with the 4+ million they clear with McKenzie's release.
Not sure I'm totally understanding you. But bottom line is you ALWAYS have to be under the cap this time of year.
Do the Panthers need to make more cuts to free up cap room for the draft incase no Peppers trade goes through?
Right now, yeah, they would -- or they could do some restructures. Getting other questions about restructuring Delhomme and I haven't heard of anything serious going on with that.
Hey Pat! I enjoy your blogs, ive posted this before but thought i would giveyou somethign to think about...Saints Draft, with our recent and upcoming moves (cutting Jason david and one of the two overpaid DT's) now looks as such: 1st- a top 10-12 player slips a bit and we trade down with a team for their 20-25 pick and a 2nd rounder. We select Clay Mathews, OLB, USC 2nd (aquired in a trade)- Louis Delmas, Safety western Michigan. this is only if we get a second round pick int he 40's since he wont fall below 45ish. boys got coverage skills. 4th- Rashad Jennings, RB, Liberty. Have you seen him? I mean really, 6'2, 235 lbs and he even has Duece's skin tone, the man will fill that power RB spot nicely. 4th- Corey Irvin, DT, Georgia. He's big, really big. Excelled after he got put into the lineup due to an injured team mate. Developemental, he could be picked later if we had a 5th/6th. 7th- Jaison Williams, WR, Oregon. 6'4 235 lbs, he will be the late round WR project Peyton cant say no to.
Just throughing it out there for Saints fans.
Ok, say somehow we land Rogers and Tank, where do you think we go in the draft? And do you think it would be better to go for Cutler (high price tag) or stick with Luke?
You think you get Rogers AND Tank??? Wouldn't one be enough?
Saw a question earlier about Bucs fans wanting a playmaking WR early in the draft... They've already got 9 WRs under contract, how in the world could you really want to use an early pick on another one?
Two words to consider: Dexter Jackson.
The 2nd round is the place to be for the Falcons?
I'd drop down to right around the end of first round or top of second. Think teams in that range will be making run on offensive linemen and Falcons can get good value for a defensive player.
Who are the 5 most valuble players in the division?
Very good question. I'm doing this quickly, but I'll go: 1. Brees 2. Michael Turner 3. Matt Ryan 4. Steve Smith 5. Jon Beason Fire away ...
What's up with Tim? Doesn't he want to talk about the AFC East anymore?!?!?!? We're getting lonely out here!
Tim's been playing hurt a bit. Think he's getting back to full strength. Hope so.
Give it up for Dexter Jackson!! He looked a little scared, but man he can fly - and catch. Give him a little and you Buc fans won't be disappointed. Just go back and watch him tear up Michigan a couple years ago - you may have heard of the game. Go Mountaineers
Yep, it's not over for him yet. Fresh start this year.
What are the Panthers going to do with the number 4 CB spot?
Don't forget Dante Wesley.
have no fear im coming back to lead the ship for the bucs now chuckys conservative offense is gone
Here's your answer!
Two Words: Aqib Talib. What do you think?
Think he's going to be very good this year.
What are the possibilities of the Bucs trading Barber? I mean, they have Aquib Talib, who is a monster, and Elbert Mack, who they are really high on. Or do you think they'll keep him as the No. 2 CB or Nickle back?
Not sure you'd get much in return for Barber.
1. Brees 2.Matt Ryan 3. Steve Smith 4. DeAngelo Williams 5. Peppers
Pep makes a list!
Pat, what do you know of Josh Johnson?? I've heard the kid can read defenses really well and has great tools. heard he had some great input last year while clipboarding. thoughts on JJ??
Wouldn't get too excited there. Didn't see much out of him in preseason last year. Still a big project.
Who ( I know who he is), but why?
Just messing with you. I think there'll be another CB in the mix at some point.
1. Brees 2. Turner 3. Williams/Stewart 4. Smith 5. Abraham
Ah, Abraham. Forgot him in my first answer.
I cant beleive you left Deangelo Williams out of the top 5? Would he be #6?
He'd be right there, too. Like I said, I did that list very quickly. Maybe I'll post a full blog item on it where I have time to think.
is sam baker capable of being a franchise OT?
Yes, if his back's all right.
Do you see the Saints picking up a Running back first round? And who?
I say getting an RB later. Pierre's good as a starter. Just get a short-yardage guy to go with him -- and Bush.
True, but why not both if possible??? Haha, Do you think it would be better to go for Cutler (high price tag) or stick with Luke?
At this point, I think you're gonna stick with Luke. You could see another QB like a Grossman, Leftwich or somebody like that to compete. But, right now, I think Cutler's a very long shot.
Thanks Pat, great job today, Pettigrew, Cushing, Matthews, Jerry, William Moore, Sean Smith, Michael Johnson and somehow Maybin are all available with my pick at 24. Who do I take? Or do I trade down to the 2nd round for some additional picks?
Hey, I'd go with the Penn State guy. But that's me. If I had to bet right now what Falcons do, I'd say Michael Johnson.
Pat... What are other viable options for Peppers to land besides the Dallas and NE?
I don't want to start anther wild rumor and I haven't heard anything strong on this. But you asked, so I'm throwing out a guess. How 'bout Philly?
Another interesting question would be who are the 5 most under-valued guys in the league - and way to not forget about Beason.
Yeah, like it. We'll do that at some point.
If only the Crystal Ball could tell us that Luke McCown is just as good as Jay Cutler, only difference I see is gametime experience. One had the opportunity, the other had Gruden as a control freak. Gotta love my Bucs!!
Yep, only time will tell on McCown.
I've heard a little about Philly being a possible spot for Peppers to land. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they have the draft choices to get something done.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they've got two first-rounders. Right?
Any word on Harvey Dahl in Atlanta? Is he getting any interest on the RFA market, or is he expected to sign his tender?
Haven't heard much. You're probably safe on Harvey.
If Peppers is with the Panthers next season, is he voted Captain??
Haha. Doubt it.
Top 5 lists all around! Next will be by position, then in each age range, by shoe size, hair color, etc..
Hey, that's some good stuff for the quiet day of June and early July.
Have any teams been sniffing around Lance Moore? Since he's a restricted FA it would only take a 2nd rounder to try and steal one of our best weapons.
Good question. Seems to be quiet. But keep an eye on this as draft gets closer. Some team might try to take advantage of Saints' cap situation and steal him. Couple more questions before I run.
How much do you think Quinn or Anderson would cost if TB is looking at them?
Not nearly as much as Cutler. But also not sure a third-rounder would do it either.
Dan Morgan, Can he add value to Defense. Or looks like another wasted season
Could be a disappointment given his history. But I'm predicting big things from Dan Morgan. Think -- and hope -- he's gonna stay healthy.
Any chance the Bucs go after a playmaker in Harvin? I gotta love my Gators.
Careful now -- Reidel Anthony, Jacquez Green ...
Hey pat is Angelo Crowell an upgrade over Cato June?
Yes, at worst, he's the same. But I think he'll be better.
Dude, stop chatting, grab a beer and watch some March Madness.
Sounds like a plan. Thanks to all for stopping by. Enjoyed it.
