Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:56 AM)

Let's get this started a little early. Warning: Let's just keep the Cutler trade scenerios to a minimum. One here and there is cool with me, but if I have to weigh 48 different deals concerning Cutler in the next hour, I might lose my marbles. Gettyup!

Rob (Laredo, TX)

Matt, Is Michael Johnson worth the Redskins taking at #13 or could they trade down and still get him? Is Lawrence Sidbury the real deal?

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

No, Johnson is not worth that pick. His combine numbers and measurables are far more attractive than his film or body of work on the field. Still, he is one of the players in this draft who had legit potential for greatness and I agree that Wash could really use a pass rusher, even a situational one. Could prob move down 10 spots though and be safe to get Johnson. I really do like Sidbury and expect him to end up going in the 2nd round. Could stand to get stronger and no offense to my guys McShay and Steve, but a slightly better weight program and regiment could do him a world of good at the next level.

Danny (Oklahoma)

Hey Matt, love your insight. Do you think if B.J Raji fell to the Jaguars at 8, they pull the trigger or should they trade down for some more picks. They need quite afew players to fill positions, that being said would they take a can't miss trade or a can't miss player at #8

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

First off, no way Raji gets that far. Secondly, thanks for complimenting my insight...always a good way to get your question posted! Back to the Jags, a few players that I think they should be targeting are Crabtree, who has no biz lasting that long, but could. Also, Maclin and even Harvin could be worth their time due to their extreme WR need. I also don't know if many realize just how thin they are at CB, so Jenkins would make sense. You need some CBs when the Colts come to town! Signing T Thomas should put them out of the OL market in round one. A DT would be great and obviously Stroud was very much missed, but no one will be worth that pick. Trading down makes some sense.

Terrell Suggs (Baltimore, MD)

What are the chances the Ravens trade me since they cannot sign me to a long term deal?

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

Did news come out on this today or something? Who is to say that Suggs won't stay in Balt long term? Seems like a very good arrangement to me.

Ben--Potomac, MD

Do the Ravens go Best Player at 26 or do they draft a specific need?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

WR and CB should be the targets, but O Newsome isn't one to watch a great player drift by to reach for a certain position.

Jack (Ill)

Will the Packers ever spend money on free agency?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Little late

Erik (NH)

Hey Matt. Did the Raiders trade for Samson Satele because they know Alex Mack isn't going to be there in round 2?

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

I think so. The price seemed right to me as well. Satele took a big step backwards last year, but the AFC East is not a place for smallish OCs with NTs around every corner. However, KC and Den are now going to a 3-4 and SD plays that scheme now. I do think he was worth what they paid, but six games with a NT over him spells trouble. Curious if Oakland even considered that.

lostinyomi (?)

is a good DT or OLB the best choice for the raiders ? the front 7 needs help.

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

A lot of things for the Raiders needs help. Raji would be too good to pass up. Curry won't be there, so OLB is not the pick in round one (for me at least). A guy like Orakpo isn't a bad idea. But the biggest needs here have to be helping that Russell character. You know, the franchise QB who they surround with sub par weapons and blockers? Barnes was an okay signing, but one of the top OTs isn't a bad call. Crabtree would be great, but Davis loves the stop watch when drafting WRs. Side note on Oak-Is there some reason why Matt Jones is not a Raider all ready? That marriage just seems too perfect not to happen.

Rob (Laredo, TX)

Matt, what's your take on Andre Smith? Will his talents outweigh his disaster pro day and combine debacle on draft day? Is he that good?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

He won't last very long. But, at best, he is the #3 OT now and honestly, I would prefer Oher in most situations, as Oher is a LT. But...could see A Smith going to Cincy for sure. Maybe Oakland. Won't last past SD, who would instantly become a much better running team with him at RT. He certainly worries me-no doubt about that. Dude, keep your shirt on! This is a job interview! But...he moves bodies.

Rob (Laredo,TX)

Is Sidbury an everydown DE?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Not today. Maybe in time.

Pat (Oshkosh)

Matt, what do you think of the Packers switching to a 3-4? Just Kidding. With Tauscher probably not coming back, is OT a No.1 priority?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Here we go....the number one priority for me would be to find some football players who suit the 3-4, since they have very few who fit that bill. College could potentially be the RT, but Oher would be hard to pass on for GBay. Some other guys to consider in round one for GBay are A Brown, and T Jackson. Considering their needs, I don't think their draft position is a real good fit for the Pack.

Cole (Kansas City)

The Rams are interested in Mark Sanchez. What do you make of that? I love it!

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

I don't blame you. The guy is excellent. Big fan here. One of my top 3 guys in this draft overall with Crabtree and Curry. News flash: STL isn't going to win the Super Bowl this year. Build for tomorrow. Still, a OT or Crabtree would also be very good selections...but no one seems to mention Crabtree for STL. Have they seen who is lining up at WR for the Rams? Wow

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

If the Browns trade Braylon, any chance they snag Crabtree at #5? They would potentially have three picks in the second round to use on the defensive side or to use to get back into round 1. Thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Even if they don't trade Edwards, I think Crabtree should be target #1 for Clev. A lot of talk of them going after Raji and yes, I like that, but is he better than Rogers? Would you rather have Raji and a 2nd round pick that you get for Rogers or Crabtree and Rogers-just an example. Orakpo makes sense there as well. Clev's pass rush is terrible, but with the wealth of 2nd rounders, they can find a few guys to come off the edge. The Browns' pass catchers are a disaster right now.

Rob (Laredo, TX)

Are the USC LBs overrated?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

I think Cushing is. Solid all around player, but I really only see him as a SLB in the 4-3. Not the dynamic pass rusher you want for the 3-4 and I just don't see him on the inside, as many have mentioned. I like Mauluga-but he is really going to have a tough time in coverage initially. So, Cushing and Mauluga both could be watching from the sidelines on passing downs. I am a fan of Mathews though. Do it all guy who will immediatly be an elite special teams player. He is screaming of New England. Oh yeah, I think he father and uncle were pretty good football players as well.

Iggy (Vancouver)

Hey Matt, thanks for chatting so often. The San Diego press has been pushing the idea of a RB at 16 for the Bolts. Why pay first round money when you already have a 1-2 punch? Any chance the Chargers trade down?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Sure they could trade down and I guess that Wells is a possibility, but only if a top OT isn't there, or Mauluga, or T Jackson. A third/fourth round RB seems like the correct call me for SD. A guy with size though for sure.

Jeremy (Burnsville.mn)

is sage rosenfels good enough to get the vikings over the hump?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Nope. Turnover machine. Terrible fit for what the Vikes should be concentrating on, which is handing the ball to Peterson and playing great D. But, he did cost them very little and is an upgrade at the most important position on the field.

Goose (Chicago)

Is the fact that the only source of income for the McCaskey family being the Bears have anything to do with their lack of offseason spending?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Can't speak for their finances obviously, but that sure does seem to add up.

Ben (Kalamazoo, MI)

If the Jags get a "Premier" WR this season do u think they will have a shot in the playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

Not really and who would you suggest that they land? Honestly, they might need two WRs. I also think CB is a massive need. DT is a moderate one. One thing about Jax though, Garrard did not play well last year, but that guy had very little chance to succeed. I would stick with him for next year at the minimum and as much as I like Sanchez, I would not be in that market if I were in charge of Jax. Garrard needs a lot around him though to be succesful.

Eric (Sioux City)

Cleveland would have to take Crabtree. They can address the rush lb at the top of the 2nd. Crabtree and English/Barwin is much better value than Orakpo and Britt/Hicks.

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

Very much agree

scratch (memphis)

well first of all i want to start by saying that the memphis tigers are the best team in the tournament and they will win it all this year and next year. that is all

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

While that is wonderful and all, you are talking to a Pitt fan, so you are now banned for the chat today. No Soup for You.

Chad (Las Vegas)

The Saints seem to be in prime position for trading down in the draft. They have only have 4 picks but could easily trade the 14th pick to say the Giants so they can get Harvin and the Saints would get an extra pick or two and have met a lot of their needs via FA. What do you think?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Very good point. I like where NO sitsa and some names I like for them are Wells (maybe), V Davis (sorta), Cushing (blah), but most of all, P Jerry. No one is mentioning DT, but think about putting Jerry next to Ellis for the foreseeable future. Upfield penetrator. Keep him and the rest of the DTs fresh. Roration. All of a sudden, the LBs and DBs job just got a lot easier...just ask the Giants.

JD (Buffalo, NY)

Love your stuff! wHERE DO YOU SEE THE bILLS GOING IN THE DRAFT?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

The names that jump to mind for Buff are Pettigrew although I do think that is too early for what he provides. But he is a Jauron type of player and could be a safety blanket for Edwards while helping a great deal as both a run and pass blocker. To me, the number one need though is an edge pass rusher. Brown would be a good fit. Work him in. Would go OL early, but not in round one. Wild card for the Bills: Harvin.

matt (seattle)

all i want for my Birthday is Michael Crabtree? LOL

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

I don't think you will get him. You got Housh instead. Championship. Well, not quite. Seattle really needa a RB and no one seems to be mentioning that. Not in round one, but a guy like Brown or McCoy in round two would be outstanding. Wild card for Sea: Sanchez. But, I think their targets will be Monroe. But the guy they have to want the most is Curry. If Stafford and Smith go one and two, I would be real tempted to offer KC a pick to move up just one spot to get Curry. He is what they need.

Robe (NO)

I like all your ideas for the Saints except Wells. They are already paying top 3 money for Bush and can't afford another 1st round contract; particulary when it is the easiest position to fill.

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Very good point about RB being such an easy position to find and more often than not, I very much subscribe to that theory. But, I do think a power running game would make the Saints a far better team. Wells might provide that. Round one Wells. Round two a OC like Wood. Just sayin. I like Jerry there better, but that running game hasn't helped the D's cause of late or their ability to put teams away-esp on the road. BTW, Bush is a WR.

Steve (Rochester, NY)

With respect to Samson Satele, is being a smallish OC in a ZBS really a problem? Satele is roughly the same size as Tom Nalen who thrived in Denver's ZBS for many years. Also, Satele played with a torn labrum in 2007 so you have to factor that into his play.

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Very true and yes, you are right that he fits what Oak wants to do in their run game. Not as quick or nasty or fundamentally sound as Nalen, who in all honesty, should warrent some serious Hall of Fame consideration. I do see your point though and I commend Oak for upgrading at the position overall without breaking the bank. However, it is odd that Grove goes to Parcells (a great talent evaluator) and Satele goes to Davis (a not-so-great talent evaluator...at least for the last decade or two).

Phil (Charlottesville)

Matt, what do you think the Eagles would have to give up to get Jason Peters? Have to give up at least one of the 1st rounders right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Yeah, but I just don't know how on Earth Buff can consider trading that guy. He wasn't great last year, but he is only one on that line who is at least above average at his position-and that position happens to be LT with a very young QB behind center.

Matt (Newport News)

Is andre smith a good/safe pick in the draft. my team is the redskins and a lot of mock drafts have us taking him

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

He certainly is not a safe pick. But he is a Redskins type of pick. High risk. High reward. Could certainly see it happening.

Yatin (LA)

Andy Reid has never drafted a RB higher than the 3rd round...why does everyone seem to think he's gonna do it this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Good point, but they do need one for sure. I can just see Moreno in Philly green. Reid is very much a believer in building through the big men-and I commend that. But, in this instance, I think Philly is close and has to be more proactive in a win now approach. OT is obviously a need. Pettigrew would be a great get. WR is needed for sure, but who is going to come in at that position and make an immediate difference? I still like Moreno to Philly, but I also like your point as well.

Chad (Las Vegas)

Why are people so fickle about the QB position? Don't people realize that there are about 6 really good QB's in the league, 10-12 good QB's and the rest mediocre?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Mediocre is a strong word for the rest. QB driven league.

Jerry (Texas)

Do you see Orakpo being a Tony Brackens type of player in the pros?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Not a bad comparison.

Scott (Saintsville)

I would love Perry and Wood in the 1st two rounds. I also agree they need a power RB, but either Greene,Brown,Jennings in the 3rd would be much better value. Besides, Wells is far too injury prone.

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

I am very much with you, but one thing about Wells to NO is that he wouldn't have to be a true workhorse. But yeah, NO should do cart wheels if they land Jerry and Wood. No one else seems to be talking about Jerry to the Saints though. DTs are gold.

Damien H. (Puyallup, Wa)

About the top dunks... I am a huge D-Wade fan and he is my mvp for sure, but Blake Griffins dunk on the idiot that stood in his way was by far the best dunk shown. And a normally credible Scoop Jackson said noone dunked on anybody? Rewind that tape and show him again please but make sure he wipes off those glasses first so he can see Blake dunk all over that guy!!! If that is not dunking on someone, I don't know what you call it

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

What are you talking about?

The Wolf (Cleveland)

Looks like Mangini wants to turn the Browns into a power running team. Which RBs in the draft fit this scheme for where the Browns are picking?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

I am sure that he does, but to me, I think you live with Lewis for another year. Clev is a mess right now. I prefer to add the RB later in the process-like next year or maybe even the year after. To their credit, that OL could be very good. Lewis could use a backup as well, but I wouldn't go RB real high here.

Rob: Minneapolis

I understand the "1st Wave" of free agency is over, but when are teams going to start to sign some of these bargains veterans out there?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Right now, NFL decision makers are either dealing with the owners meetings or locked in a room doing draft prep. These four weeks or so is kind of a calm before the storm. Will be some signings here and there, but once a draft pick who a team really liked goes to another team, then the phone will ring. Meanwhile, those free agents' price comes down a bit and some more guys get cut to make room for rooks under the cap. Still a long time until camp opens!

Jake (VA Beach)

Your colleague, Mosley, is adamant that Ohio State LBs are not good pros and to avoid Laur-y at all costs. But, you say he would be a good pick up for the GMen. What makes you think differently about OSU LBs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

He makes great points and I don't love Laurinitis for NYG. Nto sure if he is a true MLB or athletic enough to play WLB. His tape isn't quite as impressive as his production numbers indicate-and many OSU 'backers have really flopped. But still, that isn't a bad fit-don't get me wrong and he is a solid value pick at that point of the draft.

Damien H. (Puyallup, Wa)

sorry... wrong topic. LOL.. My bad

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Its all good Bro-stop back anytime

Steve (Rochester, NY)

Is Parcells really a great talent evaluator? He definitely can make bad teams better but he hasn't produced a playoff win as a coach and/or GM in 12 years.

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

The guy is a Hall of Fame coach. The Dolphins were a one win team when he showed.up. He can run my team anytime.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub wouldn't the Texans be better off possibly drafting Beanie Wells in rd 1. This way he & Slaton would make a awesome RB tandem? Or is defense a bigger issuse.

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

I agree and think Wells is a real good fit for Houston. I also like where Houston is sitting for DDay and what if they went off and did something crazy like taking Harvin? Hmmm. I don't love the OLBs that will be there. An edge rusher like Maybin (who I have mixed feelings about) makes some sense. Jerry is a possibility, but I think a big NT type is more of what they need. This could set up as Houston taking a luxory pick on O in round one-like Wells/Harvin-and then attacking D the rest of the way.

Phil, Phoenix, AZ (originally California, PA)

any chance the steelers look at someone like michigan's terrence taylor in the 3rd round or later?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Maybe. True NT who quite a few 3-4 teams will be quite interested. Wouldn't think he is a late 3rd round type of prospect, but NTs are coveted right now. PGH needs DE much more than NT though in my opinion. Hoke is a solid #2. Remember, 3-4 teams only keep 7 DLinemen at most on their roster. Not a lot of room for error/projects.

Andrew (Detroit)

OK, Matt. You said keep the Cutler questions to a minimum. Provided they trade for him, with Cutler at QB for the Lions, how many games do they improve over last year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Well, I think they improve even without Cutler...well, how could they not? Tough call for sure considering I would like to see the rest of their roster and what it would cost them, but one thing is for sure, the NFC North is less than daunting.

Brett (LA)

A little cutler talk. Prediction: He'll be taking snaps for the Broncos this season and, by September, we won't be discussing this nonsense anymore

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

We won't be discussing it if Denver is winning while Cutler is taking snaps there. Winning cures what ails ya. But, I don't see Denver winning many games this year.

robert (tx)

Do you think Graham Harrell has a chance to get drafted?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

I do think he will be picked by a West Coast type of team that doesn't stress having a huge arm. Backup.

Jacob (West Virginia)

Who do u think the vikings should draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Names to consider for Minny: Oher-won't be there. A Smith-prob will not take the chance on character. Britton-perhaps, but this is a bit early. Freeman? Hmm, doubtful, but they should. Heyward-Bey, Nicks, or maybe Harvin? No question. I see WR as the most likely position with how I see the draft shaking out. DT is a worry though if the Williams Wall is suspended for the first month of the season. Jerry? Not exactly the size they want at the position. Could be a good trade down team.

Phil, Phoenix, AZ (originally California, PA)

d.j. moore or darius butler polished enough on offense to get snaps at wr or rb?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

I highly doubt it. Such a rarity. Those guys are impressive athletes and good prospects, but are they better offensive players than what just about any NFL team has at their disposal. Good athletes/prospects, but not Prime Time.

Mike (Houston)

Texans follow-up. Any chance they take Andre Smith? I think he could be a pro-bowl guard lined up next to Winston.

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Not a huge need, but he very well could be a Shawn Andrews type of force on the right side.

robert (tx)

Who do you think the Cowboys should draft in their first selection?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Real tough to project that low, but a DB makes a lot of sense. Maybe Moore or Chung to fill the Roy Williams role. Trade up for Delmas or DJ Moore?

Mike (Akron)

Matt, love the chats. it was rumored that the Browns turned down a trade to the Giants; Braylon for a 2nd and 5th along with either Hickson or Manningham. They say that Browns wanted Steve Smith which is why the deal was turned down. Am I an idiot or did the Browns blow it? Seeing as Braylon won't be with the team next year and the browns want draft picks, why wouldn't the Browns do that?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Seems like a fair deal to me. A 2nd, 5th and Dom Hixon (former Zip by the way). But, that could just be phase one of negociations.

Andrew (Detroit)

Matt, I should have clarified. I meant, how many do they improve versus Culpepper being their QB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Substantially. But, like with NYJ, I would think that Det's new defensive minded head coach would want a care taker type QB with a great D and power running game. The problem with Cutler is he is just such an extreme risk taker. Turnovers.

The Wolf (Cleveland)

Any chance the Bucs will pick a QB in the draft? If so, who might it be?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Many seem to think Freeman is a serious target for TBay. I can buy that. To me though, TBay might be the best team to really go after Cutler. Don't hear them mentioned all that much though.

Anthony (NYC)

With it being so hard to find players that are capable of playing in a 3-4 scheme, why are so many teams running it? Also looking towards the future the colleges seem to be bare if a team is looking for DE or DT to play the scheme.

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Teams are going to it because a few of the elite Ds run the 3-4 like Balt, PGH and NEng in their prime. But, making that change cannot be a whimsical situation. Those team know exactly what they are looking for and groom players for their system. Hardly any DLinemen run the 3-4 in college, so their first year in the league is usually a wash with no production. DEs who are 6' 5" 290 pounds that can pressure the QB and hold up vs. the double team are not easy to come by!

zack (lebanon, mo)

Why has jeremy maclin fallen down mock drafts recently?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

I think many expected him to run some insane 40 time like a 4.31 or so. The guy is fast. Plays fast. Hasn't timed incredibly fast. I doubt he falls far.

Mike (Akron)

If in 1999 someone would have said the Browns are no further now than they would be in 10 years, would anyone in Cleveland had believed them? Wow.....I just got really depressed. What can the Browns do to improve? What should Browns fans look forward to this year? Improvements? Like 5 wins?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

That is about right bro. The OL is in place-that is big. Need to fix/figure out the QB situation this year. Is it Quinn? Not sure, but they have to find out by the end of the season. I think this year will be a disaster for the Browns....then you know what happens next....ownership starts to get antsy and wants to clean house....again.

TSM (california)

Matt, any chance the Rams try and trade back into the first round to pick up a QB like the Browns did for Quinn (assuming they dont take one with their original first round pick).

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Maybe, but there are only 3 QBs worth it. No way Sanchez or Stafford is around for that scenerio. Unlikely Freeman is either. Not sure that adds up this year.

JP (NY, NY)

You better get out of here before the Kiper chat starts and he schools you.

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

Didn't know that he was on-1:00 for Mel? That guy is good. No question. Okay JP, you frightened me out of here. Adios folks. This was a lot of fun as usual. Let's do it again next Wednesday at noon.
