Hello MMA Nation! Great to be back with you guys for another MMA Live chat. A ton to get to, so let's not waste any time...Gotta jet at around 3:15-3:20 ET today, so let's get moving a little early...
hey jon,any truth to the rumor of penn vs florian being held in philly??
That is what the UFC wants. Kenny is amenable to the August 8th date and obviously the location. Now, BJ Penn just needs to accept the fight. I think it's gonna happen.
A few times on the show you guys have been discussing a topic which involves kenflo and he's sitting right next to you, with his rise in popularity, along with being involved in some pretty major fights this is only going to happen more often. Is this gonna effect how often he appears on the show. I would hate to lose a great analyst to fame & fortune
It's a good question, Corey. Kenny is fully committed to MMA Live, but fighting and training takes precedence. I would imagine he will take an extended hiatus from MMA Live to train for the title shot. But he's not going anywhere long-term, if that is what you are asking.
Bonner or Florian in studio today?
Kenny is back today. Lyman Good, one of the Bellator welterweights, is also live in-studio.
Who's the number 1 contender after the mir/lesnar fight?
Could be Cheick Kongo, perhaps Shane Carwin. Maybe even Cain Velasquez, depending on his UFC 99 fight with Heath Herring.
Hey Jon - absolutely love the show. Where do you see the sport in 10 years? Any more mainstream or still on the fringe? Thank you
If recent trends are any indication, MMA highlights will be on SportsCenter in 10 years. How can ESPN ignore the UFC PPV numbers, and the ratings for MMA programming on outlets such as SpikeTV and Versus? Even the MMA reality show that debuted on MTV last week did 1.4 million viewers!
Who do you have winning the rematch of Lesnar/Mir?
Can't possibly predict a July fight in March. Mir's camp hasn't even begun. I am leaning towards Brock right now, though.
whats up jon? I like to know why dana doesn't like kimbo? Everytime someone say his name to dana he puts him down the man just tryin to feed his family like all of us.
Because Kimbo Slice is not a mixed martial artist. He doesn't seem committed to the craft. Kimbo said last week he is going to transition into boxing, likely in 2010. MMA requires so much discipline, and Kimbo isn't disciplined, from what I can tell.
Hey Jon. Love the show and it can't be long before it hits ESPN 2. With lightweight so crowded, would you give your opinion on the top 3-5 contenders after Ken Flo? Who is most deserving of the Penn Florian winner?
David, the most deserving guy may not necessarily get the next title shot. I think Sean Sherk and Gray Maynard both deserve title shots before Diego Sanchez. But I think Sanchez is the frontrunner to face the Penn-Florian winner.
Love your work; keep up the good stuff!!! I was watching some old school Royce Gracie fights last week and I saw a lot of Lyoto in Royce, particularly in their stand up game. I cannot stress how impressed I am by how Royce and Lyoto are able to maintain distance in stand up and use this distance to bait attack minded opponents and counter (Royce mostly with takedowns; Lyoto with either with strikes or take downs). Can you comment on the effectiveness of this technique? What do either fighters think? Thanks
It's a great point, Ro, and thanks for the kind words. Florian was talking to me off air about Machida before the show today. Machida is a masterful counter striker. I'm still a bit surprised he opened as a -200 favorite...against the champion no less.
your thoughts on bobby lashley? people should take a step back with him and stop the questions of lashley vs brock its not gonna happen
I thought his performance was subpar. You can certainly see the athleticism and the wrestling prowess, but he looks like a very inexperienced striker. All of that said, I truly believe the UFC will take a strong look at him b/c of the name recognition and potential. If Lashley wants to be great, like Lesnar does, I wouldn't put it past him, John.
Jon, do you recall what was the first mma match you saw that pulled you into it's sweaty grasp? What made you a fan in particular?
I watched UFC 1 in 1993. Thought it was captivating, but I was a mainstream sports fan in Boston---baseball, football, basketball, so I didn't pay much attention. I got on board like most of you, shortly after Season 1 of the Ultimate Fighter. The first MMA show I ever covered as a journalist was actually the Elite XC debut in Mississippi in 2007.
Greeting from your right hand man - I know he's not on the TV card, but can I get some love for the head of my school - Ricardo Almeida - and his future stomping of Matt Horwich....Thanks!
Nice of you to return to the chats, Robert! Missed ya...I'll be rooting for you boy Almeida. He needs a bounce back victory, don't you think? Last performance he gassed and was pretty uninspiring.
Hey Jon, I was wondering what the status was on Antonio Silva - I never heard anything after the threat of further action against for fighting in Japan while under suspension in the US - any word on when he may fight again?
He didn't do himself any favors stateside by fighting in Japan while under suspension. I think he will be back in the fall, though, once the suspension ends. Strikeforce and Affliction are the likely landing spots, but don't rule out the UFC.
UFC Undisputed came out with its full roster this week. Randy Couture ,Matt Hamill , Clay Guida, and Shane Carwin were left out of the game. Do you think they were left out for a reason ?
Can't say with certainty, but there was likely a contractual issue that kept those big-name fighters out of the video game. I'll ask around...And feel free to fire your question to McNeil's attention at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Hey Jon, love the chat. Do you think that if Forrest Griffin wins his next fight vs Thiago Silva he will be up for a title shot. I know that Machita gets his shot, but Ramgage will get a shot probably around September, could Forrest be next after that? Also any news on the UFC coming to NY. Thanks
Thanks, Greg. I think Rampage will get his shot, and then Forrest Griffin, provided he wins, would be next in line. I can't be the only one who would salivate over a Griffin-Jackson rematch. As for UFC/MMA coming to New York, I am less optimistic than I was two months ago. 2009 all of a sudden seems ambitious.
Hey Jon....it's COWBOY TIME!!! I am thinking Darth Bader is undoubtedly the man right now in terms of up and coming. Who in his weight class would you like to see him matched up with in his first true test? I'm sick of him mopping up these tomato cans.
Cowboy Ron returns! About time, dude. You are certainly not the only one who is sky-high on Bader. I agree that I'm not all that enamored with his opponent next week, but as long as he emerges with the win, he'll get a step up. Maybe he'll fight the gatekeeper, Keith Jardine, or even a Matt Hamill.
I disagree with you about Lashley. While his performance was not all that great, this was a great fight for him. He was pushed to the distance, got to test himself on the feet and ground against a veteren, and had to overcome adversity. This fight will propel him much further than his previous training and what a squash fight would have accomplished. I think his next fight will show a lot of improvement in all areas.
It's a good point, Nathan. I think the fight will serve him greatly going forward in his career. I just had higher expectations, and maybe that is my fault.
I am so excited that Showtime and StrikeForce are going to produce up and comer cards as ShoMMA - it's great for them to have a national stage besides TUF right?
Absolutely, man. I loved the ShoXC series under the EliteXC banner. Guys like Mamed Khalidov and Wilson Reis really emerged. I'm hoping Khalidov resurfaces with Strikeforce. People deserve to see that guy fight.
What do you make of the Matt Brown vs. Rumble Johnson fight? This is a big opportunity for Brown and another solid test for Rumble. Should be fireworks!
No disagreement here. This fight had one of our MMA Live producers particularly hyped up. Matt Brown will fight anyone, anytime, anyplace, and you've got to respect that.
Last chat before Fight Night. What's your prediction for Kampmann/Condit? Also what other match on the card should we be excited about? Cause I don't see much.
Not a great card, top to bottom, Will. I actually think Martin Kampmann will spoil Condit's UFC debut. Also really like the Junie Browning-Cole Miller. A nice backdrop of trash talk for that one. And I'm putting some pressure on Tyson Griffin. He MUST finish Rafael Dos Anjos. Decision is not an option.
I WAS ROBBED!!!
Were you ever. Mockery of a travesty.
What happened to Roger Huerta? It seems like he fell off the planet.
Has one more fight left on his contract, and the UFC is taking its sweet time in setting that up. Huerta didn't do himself any favors by saying he would take a break from MMA after his last contracted fight.
Hey Jon, I saw a trailer for a new movie starring Russell Crowe, and in it, a character says: "Great reporters don't have friends... they have Sources." Alright Franklin!
Hahaha...I saw the same trailer and I, too, thought of our man McNeil. He truly has some of the best sources in the business. Far more connected than the host of MMA Live!
Who wins in a two-on-two fight between you/Florian vs. Kenny Rice/Bas Rutten?
It would really be Florian and me vs. Bas Rutten, because I think we could get Rice to gas early on. I think we'd have to be the favorites.
title fights you are most excited for?
1. Machida-Evans, mostly because I have no idea who will win. 2. Penn-Florian- I think you know why.
Buy or Sell. KJ Noons returns to mma after his recent loss in boxing.
I like the question, Dustin. Sell. I do think Noons will be back in MMA, but he still has another boxing match scheduled for next month.
who has had the best 2009 so far?
It's too early to be talking Fighter of the Year. Right now, I'd say Georges St. Pierre, Jon Jones, and Hatsu Hioki are in the mix. Also Shane Carwin. Haven't really given it much thought.
Not to beat on a dead horse, but Lashley looked very amateurish against a 17-20 fighter that he outweighed by 40 pounds. Does he have a high ceiling? Sure. Is he anywhere CLOSE to that ceiling? No way.
A lot of differing opinions on Lashley. I agree with yours, Cory.
Overall what was your take on the march badness card? The boxing was subpar to me, and the mma wasnt all that great either.
Barely even paid attention to the boxing portion of the card. I was watching Texas-Duke during the BJ Flores fight. As for the MMA, it was okay. Certainly not great. Just too bad the Monson-Nelson fight was such a snoozer.
Hey Jon, How goes it! Almost time for our Red Sox to start their run to the Championship. Do you think The Natural has one more run in him for a chance at the HW Belt? or are guys just getting to big and strong? I would love to see him cut weight to fight The Spider, but that might be too much for him.
Hey, Boston Matt. Good to hear from you. I think Couture's days of challenging for the HW title are over. Even if he beats Minotauro convincingly (which I expect him to do), I just don't think, as you state, that he can compete with these modern-day, 275+ lbs. heavyweights.
Leave Lashley alone! Give him at least 2 more fights... the best news is he wants to fight every 6 to 10 weeks to get more experience.
Jon, you aren't the only one wanting to see Jackson vs Griffin 2. How do you think the UFC wants it to get that though, by Jackson beating either Machita or Evanx? Also, who would you say is next for Anderson Silva once he dispenses of Thailes Leites
Greg, I think the UFC would love to set up a fight between Rashad and Rampage, and then let the division sort itself out from there. As for Anderson Silva, I believe his next opponent will be Demain Maia. Not sure he'll be forced to wait around for the Bisping-Henderson winner.
I am a former MMA fighter wondering if I can still have another shot at fighting (I am 64 years old). Any help on a league that I should look into?
Just talked to Ken Shamrock. He will fight you.
I know Dana doesn't want anymore weight classes but do YOU think the UFC needs another weight class? I think a cruiserweight from 206-220/25 would be ideal. Those guys coming in at 220 and fighting Lesnar at 285 is just too much.
I'll answer this b/c it comes from Jeff in MD, but the UFC has no plans to create a sixth division. Not at 195 or 225. As Yahoo!'s Kevin Iole points out in his mailbag, an excess of divisions created a lot of problems for boxing.
buy or sell Demian maia vs Nate marquardt being the co main event for ufc 101? praying.... GO nate the great
I want to buy it, but it seems as though Maia may get a title shot without having to go through Marquardt. We'll have to wait and see. But I'd really like to see Marquardt get a shot at Maia. If Maia were to win that fight, you couldn't make any argument against him getting Anderson Silva (or Thales Leites, in theory).
Bisbing should get the spider....he has the best chance....or am i crazy?
A lot of folks agree with you, Shawn. But not the Vegas oddsmakers. Bisping is +300 against Dan Henderson. Hendo is -500. Wow.
Thanks for the help with Ken. But I need a womens league if that is possible. Got any punk little girls that wanna give Big Mama Hurt a fight? (BMH is my former fighting nickname)
Is that guy serious?
I hope she is not.
Who do you think is on the brink of being cut by the ufc?
I'm asked this question virtually every week, Dustin. I think anyone who loses two straight is on thin ice. Joe Stevenson comes to mind, but he is a former TUF champion, and people know who he is.
John, what do you think the chances are of the UFC ever sending some of their fighters over to Japan for a Dream or Sengoku Grand Prix (Ala Chuck Liddell in Pride)? I know that it is extremely unlikely we will see a top level guy like that go, but what about someone on the level of a Gray Maynard or Tyson Griffin? A couple of wins there could be huge to their careers and further validate the UFC as the dominant worldwide brand, while doing very little to hurt their reputation given the level of fighters that participate in these events
The UFC will not partner up with Japan in any capacity. Lorenzo Fertitta said last week he doesn't think the UFC will ever stage another card in Japan, so this seems like an even longer shot.
I would agree, Brad, that there is a ton of world-class MMA talent fighting in Japan.
There's no way "April" is real. She claims to be 64 and a "former MMA fighter". The sport has only been around for 15 years. What, she debuted at 48-49?
Brendhan serving as our voice of reason today. I'm just trying to balance out the gender quotient in the chat room. Gotta give April some love.
I bet April could give you a run for your money, Jon
Probably right. Can't believe a 64-year old woman has taken over my chat room. I gotta tighten up.
I know your not that big on Bisbing, but i just watched the replay fight of him and Sugar and thought Bisbing won. Bisbing could be the HW champ, why not MW?
It's not that I'm down on Bisping, I just haven't seen enough yet. I really like him at that betting number against Hendo. And, if he somehow can get past Henderson, he won't be looking for respect from me or anyone else.
Why does the UFC not want to work with any of the Japanese promotions?
From what I read and hear, the folks over there are extremely difficult to work with. Not a whole lot of give and take.
How would you like to be triangle-choked by that old hag.... hewwww...
That's revolting, Justin.
I actually debuted at 27 in a league that is fought over seas in Turkey. I called it MMA so you would understand what I was asking.
Great. That will be the last word on that.
With the New Jersey Athletic Commission not sanctioning the Sylvia VS. Mercer fight, what are the chances Anderson Silva actually fights Roy Jones Jr. in his post MMA career? The Spider says its a "done deal" but I can't see any commission allowing this fight to happen in lieu of what happen with Sylvia.
I disagree, Narek. I don't one has anything to do with the other. I fully expect Anderson Silva and Roy Jones Jr. to box at some point. Seems like RJJ has no interest in retiring anytime soon.
Jon, Shawn Tompkins said that Junie Allen Browning will be a UFC champ, your thought on that.
Shawn said Junie would be the champ three years down the line. I don't blame any trainer for having high expectations for his fighter. I haven't seen championship-caliber stuff yet from Junie, but he's young, and certainly has the potential to be an elite fighter. Ask me again after his fight next week.
Hey Jon, although its a couple months away, I really like how UFC 99 is shaping up. I think that the Germans fans are going to get a great show!
Second that. Main card has some really intriguing match-ups for me. Swick-Saunders is on that card, I believe.
Buy or Sell. Matt Hughes beats Serra and jumps up to fight in the Middleweight division.
Jon, forgot to mention it earlier, love the show and really enjoy your weekly chats (though work typically prevents me from getting involved). Anyway, with the recent re-addition of Cael Uno to the UFC light weight division, who do you think is that next international star Dana White goes after?
I think the WEC may go after Hatsu Hioki. As for the UFC, I would've said Shinya Aoki, but a source tells me that is not going to happen. You'd have to think there is a place for Kid Yamamoto stateside at some point.
What makes you think Randy can beat Minotauro ?
Just think Minotauro is at the end of the line. Staph infection or not, he looked terrible against Frank Mir. We have gotten in touch with Nogueira's people over the last few weeks, and hope to have him in Bristol soon. As for Couture, I thought he was extremely game against Lesnar, just undersized.
Boy has it been awhile. Hey Jon, what are your thoughts on the Rich Franklin/Wanderlei Silva match-up at 195? Doesn't it seem kind of odd? I mean I'm sure it'll make for a great fight, but where exactly does either guy go after that?
I thought you'd vanished for good, Ahmed. Glad that's not the case. For Silva, he will likely move down to 185, win or lose, b/c he no longer has what it takes to compete at 205. As for Franklin, your guess is as good as mine. He's such a great guy and an even better fighter. I'd like to see him move up to 205 for good, and take his shots at the division's elite.
ANIK - I may be in the minority, but I really think Lyoto takes it to Rashad. I think Rashad is great, but I don't think his standup is anywhere near Machida's. It's often times Rashad frustrating his opponents with quickness and patience, but The Dragon's gunna do it ten fold to Sugar. Also keep an eye out for my Wildcats SMOKIN' Duke tonight... GO CATS!
The oddsmakers share your sentiments. I do think Machida may be able to neutralize Rashad's counter-punching and, gun to my head, I may take Machida. But Evans is still underrated, even though he holds the belt.
Hey Jon love the show. I saw you guys did a new segment this week and I really liked it. Any plans for more MMA Training Tables in the future or is this a one-time thing?
Thanks, Victor. I do think you will see MMA Training Table in future episodes. I guess that means Episode #46 of MMA Live is up!
What are your thoughts on the possibility of Affliction going head to head with UFC 100 with a free show?
I'm in the minority on this one. I just don't think it's that big a deal. I'm not convinced that it's such a bad decision. What does Affliction truly stand to gain by waiting a week and having a card on 7/18?
If the spider retires at 35 (like he said he would), do you think Franklin will move back to middleweight to fight for the title ?
Yes I do, JRD.
Any word on the UFC in Boston anytime soon? Why not stage a card in one of the CT Casinos? They have been there before and it is 2 hours away from NYC and Boston?
There are a lot of variables with staging a card in CT. The casinos are so remotely located, and don't have enough restaurants, shops, etc. around. That is a major logistical problem for the UFC. As for Boston, I think it could happen before the year is out. If you ask me today, I'd say legislation gets passed in Massachusetts before New York.
you tell rich if he wins the middleweight title im coming out of retirement to break his nose again
We'll pass it along, P4P.
Hi, Jon. I've been gone for a while. But I'm back. First question. Buy or sell. BJ fights KenFlo at UFC 102. Your take.
Guilherme returns. Sell. It'll happen at UFC 101.
Turns out my friend wasn't on drugs... Machida huge favorite or what??
It's crazy, Scott. We answer your question today on MMA Live. Thanks for the heads-up last week.
Any thoughts on Lyoto Machida discussing his practice of drinking his own urine every day (which he talked about in a recent interview)?
Hard to argue with his success, I guess. But not something I'd be willing to do.
I was under the assumption the NJSAC aren't allowing the Sylvia v. Mercer fight to happen because they don't want a fighter with a 0-0 pro boxing record to take on a former champ, no matter his age; wouldn't Silva v RJJ fall under the same category? Silva has a 1-1 pro boxing record.
That's certainly a big part of it, Narek. But I just think Anderson Silva would be viewed differently than Tim Sylvia by the NJSAC.
Who do you think will be the first TUF winner to get cut from the UFC? Stevenson, Grove, maybe even Danzig or Amir have got to be getting close
Interesting question. I guess I would say Stevenson at this point. But Grove isn't completely out of the woods just yet.
Do you think the WEC made the right move by not making WEC 41: Brown vs Faber a PPV event?
I think it was the right decision. A lot of quality folks at WEC...Peter Dropick and company know what they're doing. They'll make a PPV when all the stars are aligned.
Jon what are your thoughts on Caol Uno vs Spencer Fisher at UFC 99. That has fight on the night written all over it.
Very jacked up to see Uno back in the UFC.
How did you like Kurt Pellegrino in his last fight against Rob Emerson and what do you see in his future.
I'm high on Pellegrino. He's just in a very difficult division.
Brad, Amir isn't close. He hasn't lost in the UFC yet, just been battling injuries. Danzig could be fighting an uphill battle, but Stevenson would have to be closest. Just depends on if he can win his next fight.
Travis Lutter won TUF and was cut.
Wheres the love
Sorry, Bri. Chat queue is furious today. Every time I answer one question, another 25 come in. If I don't get to you guys, send your questions to email@example.com, and I will reply personally to all of your e-mails.
Buy or sell: Gray Maynard as the UFC LW champ at the end of 2010.
you have to be high on batman ken flo corners him
Can you confirm the rumor that there will be 2 UFC PPVs in August, one in Philly (KFlo/BJ) and one in Portland (Randy/Big Nog)?
Those are the plans, Geno. Yes.
Come on, Jon!
Smokin' Joe! Can't wait for your first Strikeforce fight, so the masses can finally understand why I've been hyping you to such an extent.
Alright, guys, I gotta run. A lot of NCAA tournament stuff to do tonite for espn.com. We hope you'll check out the videos. Also, go watch MMA Live Episode #46! We're back for another chat next week.
