Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:00 PM)

Hi all. I will try to catch up to questions that stacked up early....

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

Except that they are all Steiny!

Steve (Virginia Beach, VA)

How do you think the Titans are going to address their needs at the wide receiver and corner positions - the draft or free agency? Corners seems more of a depth thing now and possible replacement for Nick Harper next year, perhaps someone like DJ Moore? Whereas WR always seems to be a need and drafting one tends to be a hit or miss proposition. Do you think they would spend their first or second round pick on a WR and if so, who would fit in well there? Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

There isn't anything left outside of Holt to address those needs effectively in free agency. I think they can really do anything they like with those picks, knowing that by draft's end they will have a corner and a receiver with good futures. Since they have such a track record of no first round WRs, I'm not going to jump out and say this is the year. And if they get Holt I'd say definitely it won't be...

Brian (Jacksonville)

Hope your day is going well, Paul. I'm starting to see what I feared in some of the newer mock drafts, that being all 3 OTs (Smith, Monroe and Oher) gone by 8. I still don't buy the Jags as players in the QB game but WR does look more real if they stay at 8. Between Maclin and Crabtree, who are you hearing looks to be more of a sure thing and do you know if the Jags favor one over the other?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

I think Crabtree is better and more promising. If they can get one of those two, the Tra Thomas signing will look better. Now if all three OTs, both WRs and Raji are gone, they are in trouble and have to deal out...

Steve (Memphis,TN)

I can't think of one good reason why Torry Holt would choose the Jags over the Titans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Automatically the No. 1 receiver. And probably more money. There is a reason he is there today and not in Nashville, don't you think?

shaunn: forest hill md

After reading a few columns and hearing a few analysts comments, why have they already made it a far gone conclusion that tennessee is going to win the afc south again? Had the colts had better play out of their offensive line and run production we could possibly had been looking at a 14-2 season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

The year before, everyone picked Indy to win it in 2009. See a trend? Division champs that hold the roster together for the most part, generally get picked to repeat.

Josh (Charlotte)

Good day Paul! I was wondering what you think of the Seward signing in Indy? Any chance he starts at LB for the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

Caldwell has talked about his as a backup for Brackett. Which means we can expect to see an influx of outside guys...

Jason (Keizer, OR)

Yes, this is redundant, but here it is: We all know what most of the media thinks of Vince Young. We have an idea of what the coaches think. What's the talk among the players about the one-time franchise QB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

You hear how much they like Collins, the way they praise his poise, leadership, reliability to do the right thing, the way he bounces back from a mistake? A lot of that is also them talking about what Vince wasn't bringing when things got tough.

Jordan from Austin,TX

Any way that the Texans trade up for Aaron Curry? He would definitely be the "impact" player that Houston coach Kubiak covets and I don't think trading up to number 3 from 15 would be too steep.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

It would be steep, and they need to improve in a lot of spots on defense and improve depth. He's a great player, but I think they are willing to go with a LB from the next tier....

Mad Mike (Houston)

Paul: The signing of Cody seems to make many experts think the Texans won't address the DT position early in the draft. However, I disagree. I think they made the move for Cody to add to the rotation not start and to potentially get rid of Travis Johnson who has underachevied or more likely overvalued by Casserly. I like the progress that DelJuan Robinson made last year and Johnson would take his reps if he were still here. So, I can still see the Texans drafting a DT in round 2 after they take Clay Matthews in the first. Your thoughts? Thanks......MM

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

I'm not wild about Cody, but if they see upside, we have to give them a chance and see. But I agree, if there is a good DT starting at them in the second, they could take him.

Bob Fort Laurderdale, FL

Paul, OK Titans got first prime time game with Pittsburgh. How many total prime time games will they appear in this year? What is your guess? Not counting Pre-season Hall of Fame Game.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Three.

Jody (Nashville, Tn)

Any news on Marvin Harrison? Are the Titans interested? Is he a lot more washed up than Torry Holt?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Way closer to washed up, yes. Titans have no interest, nor should they.

James (Indy)

Pauley! The more talk we hear from Caldwell and Coyer, it seems there won't be too many revisions in the Colts D. Please tell me that's just posturing.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

It's the personnel. They are built to do what they've been doing. A couple draft picks aren't going to allow for giant changes. But I talked with another head coach about Coyer and he said the Colts will be less predictable -- more than a handful of blitz packages and more wrinkles in coverages. So that's something, right?

Jake (Quantico, VA)

What do you think the chances are the Malcolm Jenkins falls to the Texans at 15 and they consequently take him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

That's a good question. He seems to have faded a bit in a lot of people's eyes. If he lasts til 15, they'd have to think about it.

Clark (Lexington, KY)

Outside of you, why is the rest of the media so set on the Titans HAVING to replace Haynesworth? We sure did well without him in the biggest regular season game in Nashville last year, and he sure sucked it up in the playoffs... why hasn't everyone else learned to trust in Washburn, and why isn't the Jovan Haye signing being talked about more... I think that sigining will be huge.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

I am not as excited about Haye and don't think it's a matter of faith in Washburn -- who is excellent. They effectively drafted Albert's replacement already -- Jones. Their numbers at DT are just fine. That doesn't mean they don't draft one, but it does mean they don't have to draft one.

Dee Gallatin Tn

Will the Titans go after any free agents ? If so who and what position ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Only role players left for a team like the Titans. Is there someone you are in love with and want them to get? Torry Holt is really the only likely guy.

Chris (Nashville)

Are you beginning to get the sneaking suspicion that the Titans are going to miss out on Holt? This laid-back approach to free agency and the draft is so frustrating as a fan. I was shocked to hear that they even attempted to work up a trade for him.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

It's not a sneaking suspicion, no. I had no reason to think they would jump out and win him. They slow play, and someone who fast plays generally wins if they pay enough.

Ali: Washington, DC

Hi Paul, How much more would the Jags have to pay than the Titans to get Tory Holt? Do you know if he is looking more for a payday or a legitimate chance at a championship? Also, if the Titans did get him, how would that affect their starting WR lineup (Gage, Washington)? Maybe more three-wide packages?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

Everyone is looking for a pay day. Maybe more three wide, but I think they'd let it sort out in camp and really used all three about equally.

Thomas ( Beckley,WV)

Can you see Kenny Britt falling to the Titans at 30. If not, Where do you see them going with that pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

He could be there. And they could take him. And then we could watch them leave him on the bench all the time.

Anthony, Nashville

Do you think the Titans will use Ahmard Hall more like the Ravens used LeRon McClain this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

No. Why? You want the ball out of Chris Johnson's hands? Hall is great with a couple touches a game.

Drew (Buffalo)

Have the Texans made adequate moves so far this offseason to be able to compete for the divison after filling a few holes in the draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

They've done OK. With a good draft, they'll be in position to improve if Bush can give the D an identity and Schaub can stay healthy. But vaulting two teams is a tough order.

Josh (Charlotte)

I was happy when the Colts signed Hayden ($43m a lot though) .. isn't that steep for a corner that would only be a cover 2 corner? Could he be a shutdown one on one corner in your opinion?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I don't know, but for what they do, it doesn't matter much. They ponied up for a guy they know is good at what they'll ask him to do. With Jennings coming off the injury, they would have been quite thin without Hayden.

Chris (Ole' Miss)

The Titans have 10 Draft Picks. In your opinion, give me all the positions they would use on all there 10 picks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

They will trade some, I would guess, and only use seven or eight. They don't have room for 10. There will be a CB, a WR, an OT, an OLB and. I think. a TE and maybe a big RB in there.

Josh (Charlotte)

You mean M. Jackson, right? Any news on his recovery from the knee injury? If he returns to form, that's a solid nickel package with Jennings much better suited as a nickel back.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Yes, Jackson, sorry. Polian said at combine he could be PUP to start camp. Which doesn't necessarily indicate much.

Jake (Hilton Head, SC)

Thanks for spending the time with us. I want to know if there's any chance the Titans will take Robert Ayers with their RD 1 Pick? With him being a hometown pick, with huge upside...it seems to make sense. Also who's your pick to win it all in the NCAA Tourny?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

If they love him it could happen. Hometown is not going to be a factor. And DE is not a need, even if Kearse is only good for another year. If KVB is back to form, he gets a new deal. KVB, Hayes, Ford and Ball is a pretty good group.

bob, idaho

Do you know when they will be releasing more of the schedule? Like monday or sunday night games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Usually the schedule comes out in early April. Maybe a glamorous prime time game or two gets leaked before that.

Joey (Rochester, New York)

If Torry Holt signs with the Jags does a 2nd round pick for Lance Moore make sense or is there a better receiver out there deemed worthy of a 1st or 2nd round pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I think you'd rather have your own second-rounder than Moore. Keep in mind that's what it takes in compensation is you sign Moore to a sheet that isn't matched. You may just be doing the Saints deal for them like you did with Bush in GB. I think if they wanted Moore, we'd have heard about it already.

Jake (Hilton Head, SC)

Thanks Paul, but what? Too Scared to reveal to your loyal readers who your bracket has winning it all? Come on it can't be bad, remember some people piked Wake to win it all.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Villanova wins it all, and beats Duke by double digits.

Chuck (Austin, Texas)

How's this for a scenario. Culter stays with the Broncos this year. But next year they look to trade him. Would next year make more sense for the Titans to try to trade for him if or do you give Collins/Young one more year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

The question remains the same: What are the Titans giving up for him that Denver wants?

Chili (Hot Dog)

Do you know if Holt as anymore visits scheduled? And if he leaves Jacksonville without a contract is that a sign he wont be there?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Don't know of other visits, don't know who else is interested beyond Jags and Titans. Guys leave visits and wind up signing with the team they visited all the time.

JB (TX)

So now that you're on TV all the time how are you dealing with your newfound fame? Stalkers, papparazi, and of course the groupies. It must be tough to deal with...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

One word: toupee.

JB (TX)

Here's an idea for the owners: instead of extending the season (which no one wants) they could have "Spring Games" a la college football following minicamps. Host them at their stadiums, collect the extra revenue, put it on NFL Network, everyone is happy. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Brutal dude. Spring games? With nothing at stake? Over two more regular season games? No thanks.

Fat (Albert, ca)

How do u feel about Mike Walker? If healthy doesnt he have the potential to be a solid WR for the Jags?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

I like him. But it's time to put it all together and get a career going. They can't wait on him if he's not going to contribute right away now.

Chad (Houston)

Do you think this is the year Schaub steps up and becomes a top 10 QB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

If he plays 16 games and cuts down turnovers, yes. But those are big ifs.

T.G. (South Florida)

Have you ever thought about diong 2 hour chats or do you not care about your faithful readers as much as some other bloggers? Keep up the good work.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

That's the first request. Can you promise it would be like this one with all good questions? If there is demand, I shall supply. Hit the mailbag is you want what T.G. wants.

JB (TX)

But why 2 more reg season games? 16 is perfect. Besides, they just enacted all these safety related rule changes, but yet want to put players out on the field in harms way for extra games? Why?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

Football games are good entertainment. February is boring. Two more games fills the void, and if they cut the preseason as part of it, it's win-win-win.

Dennis (Nashville, TN)

Since the Titans like to build through the draft rather than free agency and since they received 4 compensatory picks this year...would they purposely not be active in free agency to get more picks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

I don't think anyone decides not to sign someone because of what they might get in the form of a compensatory pick a year later. Titans have not been inactive -- signed Collins, Fuller, Bironas, Hentrich and three outsiders -- Washington, Haye and Jones.

John (Tuscaloosa, Alabama)

What are the Titans feelings on Nick Harper playing much after this year? I would think CB would be a need with one of their first picks not only for depth, but to replace him. Also, what plans do they have for replacing Mawae if any?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

I think it's presumed this will be Harper's last year -- but I think he's played far better than he gets credit for. Mawae's replacement is Leroy Harris.

Jack(daniels, wi)

How do you feel the jaguars secondary is right now? They dont seem to have much depth at safety and could use another CB. But Mathis and Williams seem to be solid, Nelson has his moments.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

They need to add one starting caliber DB -- and they have flexibility if they are willing to play Williams at CB or S. And they need depth. I mean William James was atrocious.

Frank (Pell Lake, WI)

With the proposed cutting of preseason games, doesn't that put a bigger burden on draft picks to perform earlier so as not to be cut? I had thought that the preseason as it is now was a good way to judge draft picks talent.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Plenty of draft picks have terrible preseasons and don't get cut. Who are teams going to keep over picks they've paid bonuses to and have for relatively cheap?

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

You mentioned in a blog post that Fisher typically doesn't speak in terms of hypotheticals but did so with regards to the upcoming offseason performance of Collins and VY - why do you think he did this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

To find a way to say something promising about Young.

Klay (Knoxville)

What effect is LenDale's 20+ pound loss going to have on his carries--does he get more for being lighter and quicker, or does he lose power and carries with that weight?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

I think they'd like things to be roughly the same as last year. And White is a big back even minus 35.

Dwight Schrute (scranton,pa)

Are the jags playing 3-4 or 4-3 this year? Or were they just implenting some 3-4 into their schemes?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

They are 4-3 but will do some 3-4 stuff to try to confuse people and allow Groves to find a niche and be more effective.

Drew (Buffalo

How many more years does Peyton have in the tank before his play starts to decline? Is this even on the minds of Colts front office or is that too far in advance it's something they aren't going to worry about?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Too far in advance. They'll monitor that knee. But he just won MVP.

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

Is the Hall of Fame game an additional preseason game (meaning the Titans play 5 games) or will TN just have the typical 4 game preseason spaced out a little longer?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Five games. And boy will the fifth one be a joy to watch considering no starters will play with the opener just a week away on a Thursday night...

Ali: Washington, DC

No word about rule changes. Was Fisher pushing to get the play-clock issue addressed (i.e. Flacco getting three extra seconds in the playoff game)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Fisher said at the combine, and reasonably, that they aren't going to make some sweeping change as the result of that one play. And they were pretty much done with it at those early meetings.

Larry David (NY)

I keep reading the jags have a porous OL and they wont be able to run the ball. But arent they getting manuai and mo williams back? Dont people know guys come back from injury?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Tra Thomas not a great run blocker by his own admission. Pashos hardly great last year. Meester a bit of a question.

Marc (TN)

I've got the dream scenario for the Titans with QB's. Vince walks after this year. The Titans, picking in the mid-teens, take Tebow to play under Collins for a year, and boom, there ya go

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

I have different dreams that don't entail chiseling a guy's post game press conference on a marble tablet.

Ali: Washington, DC

Hey Paul, Does you contract with ESPN allow for you to do some reporting on the side? The Tennessean news section on the Titans has gone downhill since you left.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

I work for ESPN and Jim Wyatt is a close friend who does fantastic work.

Jody (Nashville, Tn)

I'm concerned about the DE position for the Titans: KVB was injured half of last year, Jevon's career is winding down, and last year we even played Haynesworth out wide too. Going forward, do the the Titans believe Dave Ball and Jacob Ford can get the job done?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Haynesworth played very little outside and it was to make people panic, not out of necessity. KVB, Kearse, Hayes, Ford and Ball looks like a quality five pack for 2009 to me. KVB gets hurt one year and you're now 'worried?' Why does that happen?

Mike Seaver (LI, NY)

How do you see Jack Del Rio future going? If the jags are 7-9 and compete will he be back next yr?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Loved you in Growing Pains. That's not a great scenario for him. But he could survive it if they can claim 'progress.'

Aaron (Nashville)

What are the odds that WR Jones makes the Titans reg. season roster? He at least as to show he can be serviceable as an emergency wideout to make the team. Fisher doesn't usually allow for a return-only type guy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

I think it really depends on whether someone else showing himself a capable return man. Yes, Jones needs to be a better receiver. But if he's a good returner, they can find ways to make it work.

Frank (Pell Lake, WI)

Paul! KVB gets injured one year? What about when he had dual knee injuries in Arizona and everyone thought he was done? Just another testament to Washburns' abilities as a coach.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

He was a good player before he blew out the knees. He came back and became a Pro Bowler. Sure Wash deserves credit. But isn't it OK if we give some to KVB too? Two knee injuries that he turned into ancient history and last year's groin/abdomen don't make him injury prone to me.

Aaron (Nashville)

Does P. Williams get one more season to try and break through? Or is he a training camp cut?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

If he's not a training camp cut, they've not made sufficient upgrades or he's undergone some miraculous transformation.

Scherer (Beemer, NE)

I want what TG wants, you turn thursdays into fridays very quickly at work.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Do I hear three hours? Four?

Johnny (Knoxville)

Is there any hope left in your heart for Vince Young? You sure don't talk like there is.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

I predict based on what I see and hear. And based on what I see and hear... no.

Kevin, Jacksonville

Who do you the jags have at DT? Didnt they just trade Mcdaniel?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

They have a big need. Have to get a guy to pair with Henderson and let Meier be the third.

Jason (Bmore)

My buddy Paul. Did you not think you'd incite Steeler Nation by mentioning in your blog that the "Lendale/Terrible Towel" being discussed ad nauseum before the opening day game. You have to admit, LenDale is overrated and fat.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

What does one have to do with the other? I am towel-ed out...

Dave Matthews (VA)

Over/Under Derrick Harvey sacks this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

How about 6.5?

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

Who are you hoping for in the opening concert before the Titans-Steelers kickoff?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

The Hold Steady or Kings of Leon. Hey, somebody else was dreaming on here before, right? I know no one connected to the NFL knows either of those bands and the nation wouldn't be interested in something new.

Aaron (Nashville)

If Schaub misses another 3-5 games this season due to injuries do the Texans need to start thinking about a replacement? His numbers are good, but it doesn't help when you miss a quarter of the season

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Well it kind of depends on Orlovsky. If he is what they think he is and can play effectively, they could be OK. Lots of QBs miss a couple games. But it's a bad trend for Schaub.

Josh (SF)

The Texans need to add pass rushers. Who do you think they would look at in the first three rounds?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

OLB, DB, RB. Maybe a DE or DT in there.

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

General NFL question here - what is the typical contingency plan at long snapper if something were to happen midgame and the regular guy couldn't go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Usually the center has some experience. The center or some active O-lineman or maybe a tight end gets work as the backup.

Josh (SF)

Paul, do you think the Texans would be better off adding pure pass rusher (Maybin, Michael Johnson, Robert Ayers) or a linebacker (Matthews or Cushing) in the first round?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Well, I think we're talking a third end vs. a starting OLB. So I'd lean starting OLB. But honestly, my first choice would be DT.

Nate (burns, TN)

How about the Decemberists?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Jesse Malin?

Mad Mike (Houston)

Paul: Let's talk about the Titans and their QB situation. Collins did a fine job for the most part last year and he may well do so this year. But, I do not see a verteran QB that could step in for him, other than maybe Leftwich available now. THe Titans historically do not spend big FA money and VY is not the likely answer. With the number of picks they do have, why would they not select Bomar or Harrell or another QB that they think could develop? Thanks.....MM

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Because Fisher said the other day he expects the third to be a veteran. And because if they expect VY to be on the roster, they'd like not to carry three so a cutable vet is better than a burnt pick.

Dan (Washington, DC)

Conventional wisdom seems to be that the Colts need a DT or OLB in the first round. This means thy're Probably taking a receiver or running back, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

I say WR if they can get a Nicks or a Britt. Maybe I am overemphasizing it, but Polian said the good DTs are always gone by 15 or so and don't resurface as a value until much later.

Mad Mike (Houston)

How about the Racontours?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

Or hsi new band, what is its name?

Josh (SF)

Paul, so you think Peria Jerry over Matthews or Cushing? Do you think he plays the run well enough to play next to Amobi?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

I've heard Jerry may have some issues that might make a team hesitate.

CY, Nashville, TN

Paul, as for the uncapped year possibly coming up, when they talk about spending being wild, will the contracts formed during that time be grandfathered in when the cap comes back?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

There are all these other mechanisms that will more than offset uncapped -- two franchise tags, six years instead of four for free agency. It's not going to be the circus people are envisioning. And I still think they will avoid it.

Billy Volek (San Diego, CA)

I bet $10 that Chris Simms will start for the Broncos and win the Super Bowl. What odds will you give me? Also, what's the real story behind why Jeff Fisher was harshin' me so bad in Nashville?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

You acted like you were entitled to the job.

Aaron (Nashville)

What's the highest round you see the Titans taking a RB? I see them running out of time in a round and blurting out the first RB that comes to mind; probably in the 3rd

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

Third. And the first question I will ask is how they are feeling about Chris Henry.

JD

So the Texans have addressed starting and depth needs along the D-line so far. Does that allow them to spend an earlier pick on a RB that falls to them that they love say in the 3rd round... or maybe even the 2nd? Rashad Jennings?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:09 PM)

Yes, I could see them taking a RB before the fourth. Has to be the right compliment to Slaton -- short-yardage, red-zone type.

Josh (SF)

Paul, do you think the Texans should spend a pick in the first 3 rounds on a CB or wait another year and see if the young guys Bennett and Molden step up?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:09 PM)

Have to get one. Increase competition, depth improve nickel, dime.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:12 PM)

OK folks, I believe I am about to talk Texans on ESPNews. Tell your bosses I said it was OK to flip it on for a bit... This was chat of the year -- great questions and dialogue. So thanks for that. Look for a new column that should be freshly posted. Enjoy the hoops tonight!
