Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:54 AM)

What's up folks? Lets get it started. Gettyup.

mojo (Castle Rock, CO)

With 10,000 votes, the opinion is 60-40 in support of Bowlen on the Denver Post home page. Does this surprise you?

Matt Williamson
  (11:56 AM)

Haven't looked at that-does that make me a bad employee? I suppose. However, concerning this entire situation, I don't think it is good biz from where Denver sits to have the owner come out and say that Jay is heading out of town. I do understand that many teams will be interested, so the price prob will not get too low, but it just seems that you keep saying that Cutler is your man. You love him. Meanwhile take calls for deals and ship him out. Still, not a huge surprise either way. Denver is going to lose a lot of games in 2009.

Jack Richmond

Is Cutler to Washington true?

Matt Williamson
  (11:57 AM)

No idea. Let the rumors fly! However, I could certainly see D Snyder wanting Cutler. Yet-and he is better than Campbell-he still isn't a very good fit for Zorn's O. Neither is Campbell.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)

As the roster is currently constructed, who is going to be the #2 and/or #3 WR's for the Browns assuming Donte Stallworth is not with the team? As of now, I think they've got Patten, Cribbs, Steptoe and Hubbard to choose from.

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

That is pretty horrible. And-oh by the way-Braylon very well could be dealt as well. Crabtree has to be the top guy on their board.

Jacksonville, FL

I hear alot about the Browns giving up Brady Quinn or DA and some picks for Cutler, but have the Browns even said their interested?

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

They don't need to, but it wouldn't shock me, as this regime did not draft Quinn or bring in DA. Still, I could see Clev acting as that third party. They get a pick and ship a QB out.

Victor, CA

Is Cutler for Quinn & Rodgers too much to ask for? Possibly even swapping 1st round picks with Cleveland?

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

I think that is about right.

Danny (Chicago)

Is there a truly realistic chance Cutler winds up in Chicago? Should i be excited or just stop wasting my time?

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

The Bears should be very interested, but it just doesn't seem like their way of doing biz, right? Don't get too excited.

Jack Richmond

Are You sure he would be perfect plus Jason is already developed

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

Cutler in Wash? I don't think he is a good fit for Zorn's WC quick passing game. Neither is Campbell.

Chris (Lancaster, Pa)

Mark Madsen? Try Eric Montross. HA

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

Wrong chat Bro

ms. jarrell

what do you think would be a good enough package the bears could offer to land cutler?

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

Yoy, I am just about all Cutler-ed out already. This year's first and next year's first. Maybe throw in Orton.

James (Franklin, IN)

Matty!!!! Good to have you back in the saddle bro. Please tell me the Colts new regime does understand that 256 and 260 pound DTs aren't going to get it done anymore. You're Gold, Matty...Gold!!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Wow, I sure hope so. I think the old regime understood that as well. Well, kinda. The problem often was that Indy is an exceptional team and you just don't get top notch DTs at the end of round one. Still, if they went for a space eater like R Brace, which would be a bit early, I would still be all for that. Need some beef.

Danny (Chicago)

You can't be Cutler-ed out already! Biggest story of the offseason, Favre style.

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

Wow...at least this is better than that Favre talk. Okay, bring on more Cutler scenerios.

Jeff (Michigan)

What does Jim Schwartz bring to the table that other head coaches couldn't for the Lions?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Good question. He is very analytical. Defensive minded. Intelligent. Still, extremely unproven. I thought it was a fine hire, but I also am not going to sit here and tell you that he will make the Lions a winner.

John (Culver City, CA)

Matt, what defense is Tampa going to run now? And do you think its a good idea to dump the Tampa 2 defense?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

I think the Tampa 2's best days are behind it overall. Predictable. I expect more man coverage-test their CBs a little more. I also expect to see far more LB blitzes. TBay under Kiffin wasn't as predictable or strict as say Indy, but I do expect more variations to what they already do. Still, I also expect a drop off. That Kiffin character got some pretty good results!

Mike (San Diego)

M-Dub, Do the Chargers even have to show up to win this division? Can you say health and rest for the playoffs? 266 more days until Festivus...get your pole ready!

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

You are correct on all accounts.

Andre'....buffalo, ny

Rumor has it he will be a Bill by the end of the day....possible?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Lots of rumors. Possible? I suppose. It appears as the Bills are being more proactive (see Owens, Terrell), but still, it isn't a franchise that is flourishing right now and Jauron is a conservative minded coach. Conservative coaches are not going to mesh real well with Cutler. But, he would make the Bills a much better football team.

Shane J, Texas

Fire the coach and keep the QB. Francise QBs are a lot harder to get then unproven coaches. Do you agree?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Big time. Especially head coaches who appear to be in over their heads before ever playing an NFL game.

Dan (boston)

Taylor made for New England?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

Just wrote an article about him to go either Miami or NEng. I see NEng as the better fit, but still-and I can't get over this-he really isn't a tough guy. Not really a Belichick type. Doesn't want to go through all the off season workouts. Worried about Hollywood, etc. Yet, he makes them better and BB is always in favor of that. Plus, he wouldn't cost much.

Joe, (Columbus, NJ)

Matt, what do you think of the Vikings in the Cutler sweeps? How about this year's first and say Greenway? I love Greenway but Cutler's talent is unique.

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

I would bet that the price is higher than that. Plus, Greenway isnt' a very good fit in the 3-4. Denver needs all the 3-4 guys they can find right now.

Brad, Mi

Do you think the lions would give up their number 1 pick in the draft for cutler?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Not sure-of course. But I would. Straight up. Avoid that monster salary. Still have the 20th pick. Deal.

Alex (Houston)

Do you think Mike Nolan being the Defensive Coordinator for the Broncos a possible hindrance for a Cutler to 49ers trade?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

I really don't. He wouldn't be part of the negociation process.

Ray (Cleveland, OH)

Do you think there's still a market for J. Peppers? With Cutler now on the block, does that diminish some luster?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

No-two different markets. Still a market for Peppers. Just depends what the asking price is. From what I understand-and don't quote me here-but I think Peppers needs to sign his tender before they can officially talk trade.

Sharell (Raleigh, NC)

Cutler to TN? I just don't think Fisher is to fond of VY?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

I don't blame him. I am not too fond of VY either. Sure, that would be great. But what do they give up? Their first rounder is awful late.

Jim (Greenwood, IN)

I agree with you that NE is really loading up, somewhat quietly. You've pointed that out a few times. But there's always surprise risers...have a feel for any of them this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

No question. Houston really has me interested. Can Schaub stay healthy? Not sure on that. I certainly do not think that Balt or esp PGH is going away in the AFC. They are not a contender, but Cincy should be better. SD is still quite strong and as was mentioned before, the will moon walk through that terrible division.

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Oh yeah, Indy isn't going away either. Tenn could slip a bit.

JD ((CHT))

Cutler or V. Young or Leinart?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Oh my. Seriously? Cutler by a massive margin...and I don't even like him as much as many others do.

Troy Chambersburg, PA

Would the no. 4 pick and Hasselbeck be a possibility?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Doubt that McDaniels wants an older guy. Especially an older guy with a bad back.

Mike (Boca Raton)

New England can't possibly use all of the picks it has in rounds 1 - 3 this year. do you see them trading up in this year's draft or out of the draft (until next year)?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Very possible and no one plans for the future by stock piling future picks as well as NEng. Excellent point. I bet they really liike R Mauluga as well-could trade up to nab someone like him that they love. Put him next to Mayo behind that DL. Oh baby.

Jacob (NYC)

Would the AFC North have the best QBs in the NFL with this quartet: Cutler, Flacco, Palmer, Roethlisberger

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

I guess.

Deagle (Denver, Co)

In your opinion can the Broncos win in this situation of even tie or is it lose, lose. Personally i dont think there is anything available that will void losing J.C.

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

I agree. Has to be a step backwards for the short term-at a minimum. Just think what has happened in Denver since McD has arrived. He is planning on scrapping a fantastic running game that has been amongst the elite for years now. The QB is history and now, a once outstanding O is going to be completely dismantled. Then, of course, the D stinks and he is changing everything around to fit his 3-4, which will stall progress even further. These moves could bury this franchise for a long time unless they really hit on draft picks. Denver fans, I am betting that you wouldn't mind Shany right about now.

paul wilmington delaware

In your opinion can the eagles go anywhere with out a star wideout

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

It will be tough. Or even a stud TE like a Gonzo/Gates type. Just need one go-to guy who really changes what opposing DCoordinators do. I respect the guys they have and Jackson and Curtis are fine, but one horse would go such a long way.

Matt Gig Harbor, WA

Do you put any of this on Cutler and Cook?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Oh yeah, absolutly. Seems to be acting like my 2 1/2 year old when he doesn't like the shirt that I pick out for him. But my son's tantrums only last about five to ten minutes....

GshawnJohnson

Matt - Why do you say that Campbell is a bad fit for the WCO, given that his best college production was in that system, he's tall enough to throw over the line of scrimmage, and he can scramble a little?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

All good points, but Vanderbilt and Miss St are no longer on the schedule. To me, Campbell is a pocket passer with a big arm who is closer to Bledsoe than Garcia. Doesn't get the ball out real quick. Doesn't have fantastic short/intermediate touch on the ball. Big strong guy who can hang in the pocket and sling it. I have a hard time really ripping Campbell though, as that poor guy goes through a new OC and new offensive system just about every year. As if learning how to play QB in the NFL isn't hard enough, Snyder and his boys force him to relearn it year after year.

Pat Bowlen

Man, the wheels come off really quick. . .

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

They sure have...and the wheels are quite difficult to get back on.

carson hunt (winchester ky)

cincy should trade cpalmer to lions for draft picks or at least take sanchez

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

I love Sanchez, but Cincy has their QB. The Bengals do not need to start getting all creative at that position.

Michael Athens,OH

If you were in charge of the Browns, who would you rather trade Quinn or Anderson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

I am higher on Quinn, but if by chance, I were getting an upgrade, either (or both) could go for sure. I don't love either QB and worry that Quinn is too conservative while I think that DA is a choker when the going gets tough. Oh, by the way, Cleveland is a complete mess as well. Mangini should be happy that his boy McD is blowing up the Broncos, as his team in Clev isn't looking much better. It isn't so easy being outside of Belichick's umbrella.

Greg (Hernando,MS)

Who do you see Cowboys drafting at #51?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Obviously a tough call, but a safety like Chung would be a great get at that point. We know that they do like to make a splash though, so I wouldn't be blown away if they traded up. I give the Cowboys credit though, signing Olshansky, Brooking and even Sensabaugh were pretty solid manuevers. I still like them to contend for sure.

JAy

Why isnt The Big Tuna In the Cutler Sweepstakes ? Pennington ? Henne ? We need a QB !!

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

No you don't. I bet 15 teams in the league would trade all their QBs for all of your QBs. Pennington is limited. No question. But he is still a better than average starter. Henne looks to be the future. Be happy with what you have.

Jeff, Mpls

Can you name one player on the Vikings roster within reason, along with a draft pick(s) that could land Cutler in Minny?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Not really. None of their front seven people jump out. I thought about Chester Taylor, but Denver already has 29 RBs under contract. Don't see it.

Robert (Latrobe, PA)

How many decent years does Hines Ward have left in him?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

A few, but it is time to look to the future. He plays so hard, isn't real big and already has faught injuries here and there. Could see his body breaking down rather soon.

Jay MIAMI, FL.

As long as the J E T S dont get Cutler, Im good I guess ?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

You always hear the Jets and I don't dimiss that possibility, esp because their owner wants big named guys-esp at QB. But, I bet Rex Ryan would hate Cutler. Throws a lot of picks. FAR too many bad decisions. Plus, you think Cutler would handle that New York media well after a few losses in a row or after NEng comes into Big Apple and smashes the Jets? Hmmm

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Oh-I havent yet mentioned that GBay made a gigantic mistake in switching to the 3-4. With all these other teams screwing themselves up, I didn't want that to do unnoticed.

Byron Leftwich

Can you help me get a job?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Come back to the Burgh for a year. Maybe get another ring. You will see some playing time, as Big Ben surely will miss a game here and there. Audition for the league again a year from now. Shorten your release a little in the meantime.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)

I'm not implying that you are wrong (especially about Cleveland being a mess), but what have you seen from Quinn that would make you higher on him than Derek Anderson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Good point. His body of work is obviously much smaller, but I was high on him coming out of ND a few years ago. I like his athletic ability. His arm is good enough. Seems very intelligent. Looked as though he would handle the bright lights without much problem. I must say, that I am having more doubts the more I see him and I really would have liked to see him actually throw the ball downfield last year when he got into games. But, also not ready to throw the towel in on Quinn either. Never been a DA fan here-going back to our (Pitt) bowl game against DA at Oregon State. I want to play against that guy.

Ralph,NJ

Should carolina trade jake and peppers for cutler?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Bro, I don't think Jake is going to get you much in return. Denver needs to get a QB that McD can mold.

David California

Whats the chance of sending Cutler and Marshall to Detroit for Calvin Johnson and the first pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

0%....if Detroit were to deal Calvin, they would officially be the worst organization in all of sports not named the Pirates.

EUREKA CA

Any new on marvin harrison any chance of him going back to indy?

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

To me, that could be the best fit. Let the dust settle a bit and let Marvin realize that Indy offers him the best situation still. Go back close to camp on a very reasonable deal. Try to win a lot of games. Still, I can't say that I see a lot left with Harrison.

Chad (Lincoln, NE)

Any chance Oakland will add a WR before the draft? Also, what are the chances that the Raiders would take Orakpo with the 7th overall if still available?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Are you as shocked as I am that Matt Jones is not already a Raider? Seems like he HAS to go to Oakland or Dallas, right? Orakpo at 7 would be fine with me. Would rather have Crabtree for sure and they MUST find more weapons for Russell, but DE is a need as well. I still seeing Oak with a lot of serious needs.

James, St Pete, Florida

Hey Matt whats the chances Torry Holt will end up with the Jags?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Turned in an article about Holt to Jax/Tenn about an hour ago. Check it out. I think he isn't what he used to be, but certainly is worth it for Jax-and esp Tenn.

Billy (Astoria, NY)

Dont rule out Jones going to Cincy!!! Hahaha

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Thought about that as well. Their type of guy. They just have a lot of WRs right now.

Darryl (Oakland, CA)

Which QB would you rather have going forward: Aaron Rodgers or Cutler?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Rodgers. I don't know either man, but from seeing how they both have dealt with difficult situations over these past two off seasons, I respect Rodgers ability to handle such matters far more than Cutler. Both can sling it. Rodgers makes better decisions. Cutler's ceiling is as high as any QBs in the league though. Still, I want Rodgers over Cutler right now. Believer in Rodgers here.

Tom(SC)

If you were drafting for the Saints and Malcom Jenkins, Wells, and Clay Matthews were all available at 14, who would you take?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Jenkins. That seems unlikely however. I mentioned this last week. Just think about P Jerry for NO. Put him next to Ellis. Stud DL for years to come. Just ask the Giants' LBs and DBs how much they appreciate the DL they have playing in front of them.

Nate (Las Vegas)

Do you think the 49ers 1st and 3rd is ample compensation for Cutler?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Maybe throw in a player as well. They have a few 3-4 peices that they could move. But, where does that leave Den with their QBs? Could try to land Sanchez I suppose.

Ryan (Madison, WI)

No rumors about Holt to Philly? Seems like McNabb's dream target.

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

That would make sense to me as well. Gotta think that NYG would be interested as well, but I also get the feeling that NYG wants more of a number one like Edwards or Boldin.

AJ C (West Warwick, RI)

What about the QB from Ball State with only 1 scout at his pro-day

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Not exactly a good sign

Eric (Boulder, CO)

Could you explain why the Broncos replaced Shanny with an Offensive Coordinator? I really don't understand this, the offense was great and was obviously not the problem. Why did they not bring in a defensive mind and leave the offense alone?

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Said the same thing at the time. However, I did also give McD some credit at the time too for immediatly landing an established DCoord in Nolan.

abner , tampa florida

what does the bucs would have to offer to get cutler?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

To me, they might be the best team to go get him. However, with personalities like A Bryant and Winslow as your top targets, does Cutler have the leadership/stones to keep everyone in line?

Jack (Toronto)

From McDaniels standpoint wouldn't getting Quinn be a best fit? Doesn't McDaniels basically run Charlie Weis' offense? I imagine Quinn could pick it up a lot quicker than many other QBs out there.

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Yes and I did mean to mention that. If I were McD-considering where they sit right now-if I could go into camp with Quinn and Simms, that wouldn't be so terrible. Plus, of course, you would pick up some draft picks as well.

AJ C (West Warwick, RI)

Do you think Pioli will take some of Belichick's brains with him to KC, for draft time?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

I do. Have faith in him to make the right moves, but once again, I have problems with the shift to the 3-4. KC doesn't have many good front seven players, but their best guys-Hali, D Johnson and Dorsey-all don't fit the traditional 3-4 very well. With Pendergast as the DC, I am sure we will see a lot of variations and innovative use of personnel like he did in Zona, but still, riding that fence isn't easy to do.

Derek (Boston)

Cutler and P. Hillis to Jets for T.Jones and Clemens / Ratliff? Jets get their QB and Broncos wont have to play musical chairs again at running back.

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Oh my no. NYJ would have to throw in ATL LEAST their first round pick. What is Jone really worth? Not much right now.

Denver Broncos Fans

Any chance this is all just a cruel April Fools joke?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Well done

Ed( San Diego,CA)

What do you see the Chargers doing with the #16 pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Sitting back, playing it smart and letting someone fall to them. A Smith would be perfect, but I bet he is gone. Mauluga would be tough to pass on. Could also see a trade down, as SD doesn't have a 2nd rounder.

al- philly

Juqua Parker (DE) and 5th to KC for gonzo?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Not enough

Ryan (Madison, WI)

What do you think about Bryan Kehl's future with the Giants? He's fast and smart and made some plays last year, but he also looked overmatched occasionally as well.

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

True and I do think they could use one more impact LB-maybe even in the first round. But, their LBs are good enough to win with and Kehl does have upside. Should improve with his reads in his 2nd season. Having that DL sure helps.

JT (Boston)

What do you think of Jasper Brinkley? He has really slimmed down since the season, does that hurt him as a 3-4 ILB? Could he possibly climb into the first 3 rounds?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Maybe a 3rd rounder. Looks like a 3-4 ILB to me still. Thumper. Not much of a coverage player. 2 down guy. Good between the OTs. He has slimmed down, but I am betting he could pack on 10 in no time.

rich, MA

hi MAtt, i predict a 2nd NYG vs NE superbowl. you? thanks rich,

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Have said of late that I think PGH and NEng are the two top teams in the league and that NYG are tops in the NFC. Obviously a little time between now and opening day though.

Sean(NJ)

As a fantasy football owner of Jay Cutler who am I hoping he goes to?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Wow. Not the Jets-no WRs. Not Chi-no WRs. TBay would be fine. SF doesn't have much at WR. Detroit. Cutler to Calvin? Can live with that. Plus, the Lions surely would be losing a lot-garbage time yardage counts all the same in FF.

Mr. Cutler

Big mistake! I forgot to pay my cell phone bill! I have 700 voicemails... oops!

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Nice.

gary (reading, pa)

Chance of Chargers getting J. Peppers?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Nah. Not a need with Merriman coming back. Assuming Merriman is healthy, that will be a totally different D.

Alex Smith

Am I worth anything or should I retire?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

You are not worth anything in a trade. You should not retire. Still have a chance.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub if the Bills do move Peters in a trade will they be looking to get draft picks & a OLT in return or will they use their #1 pick to draft OLT?

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Doubt they would get a player in return, esp at LT. Not many of them around. You keep hearing Peters to Philly-would be a great move for the Eagles. I understand that Buff's OL was poor last year, but they cant' competley dismantle it and still give up their best OLineman.

Tony Romo

Do I have a better season this year?

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

You had a tremendous season last year-before the thumb injury. I am not going to dismiss your late season struggles however. Still, how many QBs are above Romo right now? Not many.

Matt Williamson

Do i really find people using fake names of athletes humorous?

Matt Williamson
  (1:02 PM)

Somewhat

Paul (Denver)

Oh yeah, Cutler to Hester wouldn't yield much at all! Do you remember how many deep passes Orton missed last season?

Matt Williamson
  (1:03 PM)

That is true, but do you think that Chi has a strong group of WRs? I do not. Didn't mention Hester specifically one way or another. If he were on my FF team, I would rather Cutler went to Det than Chi. Don't take it personally. Count to ten. It's all good.

Patrck(Hoboken)

If you had to start a team right now picking a QB...how many would be picked above Big Ben?

Matt Williamson
  (1:03 PM)

Maybe none considering age, etc. Maybe Brees. M Ryan could get into the conversation, but not today.

Former Broncos Fan

I spent 500 bucks for a cutler autographed broncos helmet... do you see me getting my money back on ebay?

Matt Williamson
  (1:04 PM)

Sell now. I am not sure if the news is out or not about Cutler maybe leaving town. Shhh.

Matt Williamson
  (1:04 PM)

Okay folks. That is a wrap. Good stuff as always. Hopefully Cutler is traded before we chat again.
