Good morning y'all. Yesterday brought us an amazing Phils comeback, thee return of Yovani, and more awesomeness from Ben Linus. We've got an hour to chat fantasy, so let's get down to it, shall we?
In your last chat, you called Rasmus a potential Quad A hitter even before his first MLB AB. That's as bold as Berry. Care to elaborate?
Just that he's been talked up for quite awhile now and yet the team saw fit to have guys like Skip and Barton and Mather on the roster instead. When So Taguchi is deemed a better option, it scares me.
General baseball question, worried about the braves pen's inability to throw strikes in a 7 run game?
No. More concerned about the fact that Cox used relievers in game 1 and 2 that he should have saved for game 3.
What lies in the shadow of the statue?
Darned if I know... now duck, Lapidus!
Jurassic name game: Helton, Konerko, Thome and Dye.
I like Dye.
It's bad enough rooting against one of your batters when he faces one of your pitchers. But when one of you pitchers hits a homer of another one of your pitchers?! What a drag. At least Gallardo did well. Can't say the same for Randy Johnson...
I think you can say the same for Randy. Really only one mistake - albeit to Yovani. But yes, since pitchers hitting stats no county, Unit + Yovani owners no happy.
H2H would you rather have Verlander or Kuroda?
I'd rather have Kuroda. Verlander is very consistent, but it's been a consistent bad.
Obviously it's just one game, but Grienke owners have to feel pretty encouraged at this point. Can he become a "fantasy ace" this season?
Absolutely.Greinke was just at the tail end of my preseason Top 20 SP. I think he and Meche are solid, even if the Royals end up sub-500.
If you crashed your plane on a "deserted" island who would you rather lead your survivors off, Bonafacio or Fowler?
I'd go with Bonifacio if for no other reason he's bound to get more PT, and there are far more OF available.
Finally took a pitcher early in my Drafts this year...Should I be worried about B Webb?
A tad. Most pitchers get sore after the first start, especially if they go right from a 50-75 pitch outing in sunshine to a 100 pitch outing in a snowstorm. But the news about insurance companies being wary of Webb certainly raises the eyebrows more than most, and his first start wasn't in freezing temps.
Would you trade Lastings Milledge for Ian Stewart in a keeper league?
No, but Milledge is someone I really really want to do well. Personal bias is hard to remove from the equation entirely. However, I certainly would keep Lastings on my bench until he gets hit No. 1.
When does Matt LaPorta see some time in Cleveland? Call up this season?
No doubt he gets a call-up in September. For him to get an earlier summons, though, I think Choo would have to continue his slow start for a month or so.
Which 'Kevin' would you rather have - Slowey or Gregg?
Slowey has more overall fantasy value, so I'd take him in the "proverbial vacuum".
I'm in a league that has one-game in season position eligibility. When I can expect Sandoval to catch his first game this year?
I don't think it's "in the plans" but don't be surprised to see him there the first really long extra-inning game that SF plays in.
I swear, I'll only post this question a total of five times: What are your thoughts on Brett Gardner? My league has a rookie keeper exemption rule, so I'm wondering what his room for growth is?
Never going to develop a lot of power, but 50 steals? Perhaps as early as this year.
pick two out of the four: choo, daniel murphy, lind, and spillborghs?
I like Murphy's natural hitting ability, and Lind would be my second of the quartet.
Hey A.J., Do you think that me trading Frank Francisco from my reliever-happy team for Diamondbacks Outfielder Chris Young was a bad move?
No. Saves are always available. Young should break out of his poor start.
Hey AJ. I got stuck with Trevor Hoffman and David Price in my leagues auto draft. Should I keep them on the bench or waive them and pick up two different RP and SP?
If you have the room, then keep Price, because the only thing keeping him in the minors is "time" - he'll be up eventually. Hoffman on the other hand, I wouldn't wait for if I need saves now.
I've heard the hype, but am I wrong to believe that this is the year that M. Cabrera puts up unreal numbers?
If you read ,y Out of the Box today you'll see that he's my favorite for MVP 2009.
Sorry for the delays folks... trying to get confirmation on a breaking story.
would you start porcello today?
You can check out Daily Notes each day to see how we rank the day's starters. I believe I had Porcello in the middle of the pack, so there are better, but also worse options.
Now that its been 3 games, do you see Bonaficio winning the Triple Crown? How about the Marlins going 162-0?
LOL. Better chance of winning horse racing's Triple Crown, as fast as he is. A nice start to be sure. Enjoy while it lasts.
I was offered John Lackey for Mark DeRosa who is my util/backup. Too risky? Thanks!
Why would it be risky to take a chance on a solid starter (assuming he comes back at full health) for a guy you're not using. DeRosa can easily be replaced.
i love james loney, whats to much to give up to get him?
I think Loney is 8th-9th round hitting talent. Get back something you also consider in that range for equal value.
Sorry to keep those of you who don't know in suspense, but I need to wait for confirmation...
Liriano or Lester in a H2H keeper league?
Liriano. I think there's much more longterm upside... though also far more potential downside. Still, if I had to pick one...
The LA Times just went with the news, so I'll report that they 're on board with the awful news. Nick Adenhart was apparently killed in a hit-and-run accident this morning.
Sorry to bring the room down, but, wow!
Hard to rebound from that, guys. After all, fantasy sports is supposed to be about fun and this certainly is the furthest thing from it. I'll happily continue to field questions for the next twenty minutes, but you know, let's keep it all in perspective, OK?
What a loss. My thoughts go out to his family, friends and teammates.
That is just horrible. A promising young pitcher with the world in his hands. My condolences to all who knew him and all who were fans.
Should I buy low of Cliff Lee, Webb, and CC? Who else should I buy low on??
Tone aside, I said I'd answer a few Q's, so here goes... I'd definitely buy low on Cliff and CC, but Webb I might wait on.
Really puts fantasy baseball, and conversations like these into perspective.
Indeed. But at the same time, if we stopped our lives completely after every tragedy, when would we ever move? You know?
I bet the LAA/OAK game is PPD tonight.
You are probably right. Similar to when Daryl Kile died, it's more important to give the Angels players time to grieve.
I know this is part of your job description...but there aren't too many people who would mind if you ended the fantasy chat now. Might be what you should do. Keep his family in your prayers.
I think I'm going to... simply because some of the questions I am now getting are verging on very bad taste. Anyone else want to offer up condolences, I will post them, and then we'll adjourn until the next time.
Folks, there will be another chat at 3pm. I'm going to call it for this morning. If you have any questions about start/sit for today, our Daily Notes does cover that. Until the next time, our thoughts go out to Adenhart's family....
