Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:54 AM)

What is shakin' today folks? Let's get this started.

Jake, NYC

Do the Giants start 2009 season without any new veteran WRs (ocho, Edwards, or Boldin)? Can they win the NFC without any of those relying perhaps on a draft pick or their current wr corp? They are loaded at every other position and arguably might have the best talent in the NFL.

Matt Williamson
  (11:55 AM)

I bet they add an established vet through a trade. This is the time to be aggressive for NYG and I would honestly over pay just a bit to land Boldin or Edwards. Would consider Chad J as well. If they do nothing, I still lean towards them being the best team in the NFC though. Close.

John (Cincinnati)

How's it going Matt! Would you say it is in the best interest of the Browns to deal Edwards if they can get at least a #1. It would signify a rebuilding period and they could draft Orakpo and a WR in the first round or Crabtree and a decent OLB in the first. Thanks.

Matt Williamson
  (11:57 AM)

I agree with that. It seems pretty obvious that Edwards will not resign with Clev after this season and I don't think the Browns are going to win the SBowl this year. Therefore, get what you can. The Giants' first and third for Braylon? I would do that if I were both teams. I also don't know how Clev can pass on Crabtree in round one.

Odell Chicago, IL

Matt after Crabtree and Maclin who do you think is the next best WR? Thanks.

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

I guess Heyward-Bey, but that isnt' an easy question. Tempted to say Nicks. Could be Harvin. A LOT of risk with DHB and Harvin though. Like most of the better prospects in this draft, I see big negatives with all of the above.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

Are there any reasons why Stafford shouldn't be the number one pick at this point?

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

I would assume that it will happen, but personally I like Sanchez better than Stafford. It doesn't seem as though Detroit agrees with me and I don't think anyone could really critisize them for going with Stafford first overall.

Paul (NYC)

Matt- sorry for another Giants question but... as much as I want them to draft a WR, the LB corp looks like it could use a little more depth. Do you think there are quality LBs available in the 2nd round if they go WR in the first? Or do you see a LB being available in the first round that would be worth taking over a WR?

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

Could see some LBs dropping in round one, including someone like Cushing. I would expect a first round LB to pay more immediate dividends than a first round WR. They have plenty of project young WRs with talent. They need the vet. As for round two, I really think NYG will be happy with one of the pass catching TEs who should be sitting there. A lot of those guys in this draft and adding another athletic big target down the middle of the field and in the red zone should help make Eli happy.

Erik (NH)

Hey Matt. how far would the Rams like to trade back to? Would they rather move a few spots back to say, Oakland for #7 and a 3rd or out of the top 10 to say, Denver for their #12 & 18?

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

Well, STL doesn't have a shortage of needs, so I could surely see going for quantity over top quality in Steve Spags' first draft. Create competition at many positions.

Ed (PA)

AFC North Question: The Browns and Bengals haven't gotten any better and the Ravens may have slightly regressed, right? Do the Steelets cruise to another division title?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

I think PGH and NEng are the top two teams in the NFL right now and I will be picking them to win the North. But, the Steelers did lose a starting caliber CB and their #3 WR. That isn't huge and they do get guys like Sepulveda and Mendenhall back for next year as well, but I also don't think you can count out Baltimore. Flacco will be a year better and they did a very good job of filling their weak areas during the free agency process. Cincy isn't a contender, but I bet they are better in 2009 than last year with Palmer coming back. Cleveland is terrible.

WESS ILL

WILL THE COLTS TAKE HICKS IF HE FALLS TO THEM

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Seems logical. Could also see them showing a lot of interest in Robiskie with that pick. A DT like Hood or Brace would address a massive need as well. Gotta think they go WR or DT, but a wild card could be if they love one of the top RBs and he falls.

Joe (Fremont, CA)

Hey Matt..Do you think the niners have a good shot at making a run for the division, now that singletary is in charge?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

Torn on that. I certainly see STL as the bottom feeders in the West, but I gotta think that Seattle rebounds next year. Zona also had some breaks last year, but they cannot be discounted. Really leaning to putting SF 3rd in the West come prediction time.

Bryan (St. Louis)

The more I read and hear, the less I like this draft. Would a team be wise to trade as many of its picks for picks in a higher round next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

I agree with you. Don't like this draft much as all either. Yeah, that strategy makes sense for sure, but the problem with that is many top decsion makers in this league do not have great job security. Could be setting the team up for the next guy who comes along and takes your job while your team flounders in the immediate future.

BILL INDY

FOLLOWING UP ON WESS COULDN'T THE COLTS TAKE A PLAYER LIKE HOOD OR BRACE IN THE 2ND ROUND

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Not those two. DTs are hard to come by-esp in this draft. No way they fall that late in round 2.

M (DC)

Why should the Lions take a young QB with nobody to protect his blind sight and risk the deer in highlights syndrome, when there are elite LT prospects available? Unless they feel that Peyton Manning is available, doesn't it make sense to to solidify the OL first?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Honestly, I don't think any of the OTs or Stafford is a truly elite prospect in the mold of someone like Manning, Boselli, Pace, etc. BIG questions with all the top guys. Backus isn't awful at LT and no one is forcing the Lions to make Stafford the opening day starter. A redshirt year would do him a lot of good in fact. Bad year to pick real high in the draft.

Mike (akron)

Hey Matty-Ice, what do you think about that winslow deal? Seems a little much, years and money. I don't think he can play a full season. As a scout, from what you have seen from him, do you think he even plays past 2011 or 2012?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

When I got to the Browns' organization, they had just selected K2 so I saw him in mini camps, trainging camp, etc right out of college. I was blown away. Superstar. RARE RARE abilities for someone with his demensions. But, he isn't at that level anymore and the injuries have taken away from what he once had. But-and I actually think he said this once-80% of K2 is still better than just about any TE in this league. I don't know how the contract is structured, but he obviously wears down as seasons progress and his body is awful old for someone his age. The guy is a top notch competitor though and plays very hard. Also, more of a WR than TE anymore.

Tim(Des Moines, Iowa)

Could Josh Freeman end up being the best quarterback in this draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Sure. The kid is dripping with ability. I rank him behind Sanchez and Stafford though. He is someone who really needs to watch for a while. Get his feet wet slow.

Josh (Houston, TX)

What teams might be interested in Rhett Bomar, and will having Bus Cook as his agent help or hurt his chances in the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Hadn't thought of that, but I bet it doesn't help a whole heck of a lot right now. I see Bomar being over drafted and he could be the 4th QB off the board. Big arm. Very good tools. Just isn't accurate enough for my tastes-esp against so-so competition at SHous St.

ANDY IN

IF YOU WERE POLIAN WOULD YOU TRADE BOB SANDERS SINCE HE IS ALWAYS HURT

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

& I bet he always will battle durability questions. However, if you were to deal Sanders, what could you realisticly expect in return? Everyone knows about his massive strengths and weaknesses. Who is going to give up a top pick for him? Plus, the Colts' D is obviously FAR better when he is in the game. Probably the smart move at this point is to just keep the guy you have.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)

I'm reading a lot of mock drafts that have Brian Orakpo going to Cleveland. Does this team ever learn, looks like another workout warrior? In your opinion, does Orakpo have any higher chance to succeed than Kamerion Wimbley has?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

I see where you are coming from and Orakpo's effort was a little up and down at Texas....but the Browns' pass rush is horrible. I would much rather have Crabtree, but I also think Orakpo may end up being a very solid pro who ends up being a 8-11 sack guy year after year.

Travis (Ames)

I read in your previous chat that you weren't high on S.Greene. Have you watched much IA tape? That's not meant as a confrontational statement; but, I was quite surprised, because while his speed is average at best, he has elite vision, patience, and power.

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

I don't hate the guy, but I think when he gets to the show he will most likely be in a rotation. No big deal there. However, I also think it will be a huge key to the D when he is in the game. He isnt' an outside runner in the NFL. Won't get to the edge. Not a contributor enough in the passing game. "Greene is in the game. Let's clog the middle and force him outside." DCoordinators are very quick to pick up on a player's issues. Still, if he is there in the 3rd for Houston, I jump on him. Also, overaged prospect.

john (baltimore)

Do you see Jarron Gilbert being a beast in the NFL? Is there any chance he goes in the first round?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

He could be a first rounder and he could be a beast if he gives better and more consistent effort. Takes some plays off. Looks like a 3-4 DE, but is more of an upfield penetrator. Could be a base strongside DE or add some weight to be a three technique DT. Some risk for sure with this kid.

The Wolf (Cleveland)

Where do you see RB Coffee landing? Round and team?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

4th round. Strong, but built more like a WR than RB. Kind of a slasher with average speed and ran behind a very good OL. Doesn't look like a workhorse type. Still, does some good things for sure. What team? Wow, that is tough one bro. Projecting what team a fourth round guy goes to? Okay...shot in the dark: STL.

Lawrence(Bath,NY)

Hey Matt love the chats. How about a Bills question? I keep reading that #11 is to high for Pettigrew and that DE is the way to go. I for one think there is a lot of bust potential with the DE's this year and Pettigrew is a beast who would make the Bills offense complete. Is taking Pettigrew at 11 a reach and should the Bills do it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

You make good points. Certainly bust potential for the DEs. Maybe you could get someone like Sidbury in the 2nd round. Yeah, 11 seems early to me for a TE who doesn't stretch the field, but he is also a very good fit with the Bills. Trade down a few spots though and then take him.

TEX ILL

GENESIS OR U2

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

U2

Brandon (Somerset, WI)

Matty, could you see the Packers picking up, thee elite 3-4 DE in this draft, Tyson Jackson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Very well could be their first round pick, but like I said yesterday, the guy has never been a 3-4 DE before. Certainly projects there well, but there is going to be a steep learning curve in year one.

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

.....which once again, is another reason why GBay's switching to a 3-4 is just a flat out terrible idea.

The Wolf (Cleveland)

How do you rate Browns backup RB Jerome Harrison? He had some amazing plays in his limited role last season.

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

I want to see more and must say that he deserves to get on the field more in 2009. Lighten Lewis' load. I have been critical of Mangini, but he did use Leon Washington well last year. Could be similiar.

Jeff, Mpls

Since the Vikes didn't address their QB situation again, wouldn't Harvin make a lot of sense at #22 to help take some pressure of AP?

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Yeah. I wouldn't have a problem with that. Also would strongly consider Britton and Oher at OT.

Mikey(Lackawanna,NY)

Matt, Once Aaron Curry is off the board! Who is the best overall LB on the board? Rey Maualuga/Brian Cushing/Clay Matthews/Other?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Tough one. Maualuga is intriguing because he is so disruptive and explosive, but he is also very up and down. I will go with Mathews. Does it all well. Can play every down. Only getting better.

Ben (Baton Rouge, LA)

What about the rumors that the Bears could bring in Plaxico? Would you do it? Or draft a WR in the 2nd round of the draft? If the Bears shore up their WR corps, would they be among the NFC favorites? Thanks.

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

The story with Plaxico obviously is his legal situation. Is he going to jail? If he is in jail, I would not recommend bringing him in. If he isn't going to jail, then yes, Chi-and many other teams-will be calling him hot and heavy. I don't love the Bears' D, but they have excellent special teams and I now honestly believe that they only are a #1 type WR away from having an excellent O.

VK (DC)

Know anything about this Robert Thomas Jr guy the Skins just signed?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

He is just a guy. Bounced around the league.

Cosmo (NYC)

Fins need to improve CB situation and WR. I dont think there will be CB value early in draft..what other areas do you see them targeting? any way Brace falls to the fins at 25? Thanks

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Brace should be there and could be the pick. I like CBs like D Butler and A Smith. WRs could be a stretch, but maybe Nicks.

Os (Jersey)

Another question Matt, aside from the Boldin, Braylon, Ocho possibilities; who could you see being traded? a Browns QB? Peppers?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Would be surprised if a Browns' QB was not moved. Who else could be on the move? LJ or Gonzo from KC? Drawing a blank on other possible guys who could be traded.

Jim (NYC)

Best player in the draft nobody has heard of is...?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

J Dillard is not a house hold name and certainly is not a sleeper in draft circles, but this kid is one heck of a WR. You keep hearing 3rd/4th round, but I would take him much higher.

Jason (Chicago)

Do you see a possibility the Bears go Safety in the second round and get a wideout later?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Not sure that it does them much good to reach for a rookie WR. The middle of the 2nd round isn't a good place to find one either-but it is a good place to find a S. Even if they didn't draft a WR at all, it wouldn't be the end of the world considering what they should expect in early returns. Need to get in the veteran WR market-which is tough to do, but guys will be released between now and camp.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Everyone in New England thought once Cassell was traded, the Pats would use that cap space to resign Wilfork...why hasn't that happened?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Not saying that it is going to happen for sure, but it sure seems like a prudent thing to do and the type of signing that NEng gets done. Be patient.

Peterman (Burma)

What do you think the Eagles need to do to put them over the 'Losing in the NFC Championship Game' hump?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Oh, I think Philly will be right in the thick of it again this year. If they could land J Peters or a vet WR, that would be an exceptional addition. Expect them to draft a RB rather high. They should also have interest in Pettigrew in round one. Both could pay immediate dividends.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

I'd rather have Nicks than Harvin as a Vikes fan. Harvin looks like a dented can version of Devin Hester to me.

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

That is a tough call, but for Minny's situation, I suppose that you are right. Berrien offers enough long speed/home run ability. Nicks is something they really don't have right now.

CAL ILL

WHO WILL HAVE A SOPHMORE SLUMP I SAY MATT RYAN

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Big believer in Ryan here, but could see his OL letting him down a little more than last year. Soph slump? Hmmm....no one really jumping to mind.

Mark (Bangor, PA)

What about Maybin at #5 for the Browns? OLB in the pro game?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Whew-too high for Maybin in my book. One year wonder. Still has very questionable overall football instints. Great get off and there is certainly upside there, but I don't take him at #5.

Milt Lyles (Opa Locka)

Gil Brandt of NFL.com listed Josh Freeman ahead of Mark Sanchez and said scouts that have watched Freeman's sophomore tape when he had better talent at OL and Receiver (Jordy Nelson) were really impressed. Thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

I like Sanchez better-no question in my mind. But, Freeman is awfully impressive at times. Rare physical gifts. Like a stronger Flacco who also moves better. But, inconsistent. Freeman's highlight tape would blow you away, but I just see him as a QB who will need some time. Could be great though.

Mike (IA)

I agree with you about Maybin. He is very quick, but having seen both him and English play my Hawks, I think English will be the far better player.

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Neither is incredibly fast. I think English plays harder. English plays a little higher than I would like, but still-gets after the QB.

Robert (PC, Florida).

Quick, name a UF receiver that actually played well in the NFL. (Silence...).

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

...........

Ed (PA)

Do you think Mendenhall takes over for fast willie at some point this season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

I do. Really like Mendenhall and I am not all that big on Parker.

Jimmy (Buffalo)

what do you think the bills can get for Jason Peters. Has the Brain Waters talks ended with the bills

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

What are the doing in the Great White North with their OL? Just sign Peters! Anyways, I would expect Peters to yeild one of Philly's first rounders. Not sure on the Waters front, but I don't see KC giving any of their guys away and they will look to win immediatly. Could be a more than respectible offense in KC.

Tristan Tampa

I agree about sanchez and freeman, but do you think freeman will be available to the bucs at 19 or will he get taken earlier?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Real close to that neighborhood.

David Fairborn, OH

Tank Johnson is a pretty big deal in Bengaldom. The D is getting more solid. You said earlier you don't think the Bengals are contenders. With the right moves in the draft, do you think they could become one?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

I do expect them to be better though-and the D is a major reason why. I like the Tank signing. Quality group of DTs now. The D will be much better than many tend to think, but they still need to add one pass rusher. Their pass rush was just so bad last year. On O, Palmer will cure a lot of what ails them. I am assuming that Levi Jones is on the outs, so OT is a big need. Could be Andre Smith. Gotta add a RB with some home run ability and wiggle, but that won't be real hard to do on DDay. Pearman?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Also...Cincy MUST get better at center. Should be their 2nd round pick. Wood/Unger.

MIKE NOONAN MASS

IS BILL BELICHICK LOADING UP FOR A FINAL RUN WITH THE PATS

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

That dude is always loading up.

greg (den)

Cris Collinsworth. Darrell Jackson was Ok for a few years too.

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Going back a while there on Collinsworth. Ike Hilliard has had a respectable career....but was a very high pick.

Scott (KC)

You mentioned KC O, will Jamaal C be a factor? He was injury prone last year, but flashed big time potential.

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

No question. Can he stay healthy? But, he shouldn't be a guy who gets more than 10-12 carries per game. Could make a lot of big plays. I like.

David Fairborn, OH

Amen. Ghichiuc is a joke.

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Tough division to be an undersized finesse OC. Hampton. Ngata. Etc.

The Wolf (Cleveland)

ALL CAPITAL LETTERS or lower case letters? Which DO you PREFER? :)

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Utterly impartial.

Tim (El Cajon, CA)

Do you think that in this years draft, you can get pretty much the same kind of player from say 11 to 20 as you can from 1 through 10? Seems like a good draft but Not any real super stand out players.

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

I don't like the star power this year. EVERYone has a big negative to them that just stands out like crazy to me. I also don't think it is a real deep draft. A lot of those late first guys look solid, but many don't have the huge ceiling.

James (Indy)

Matty!!!!! I'm a little late to the party today bro. What is Seattle thinking with that 4th pick?? Long live Green Bay's switch to the 3-4!!!! Just kidding you Ice man!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Where ya been? Unacceptable. Sea must covet Curry. Will he last? I think he should, but most experts see him going in the top 3. He has to be their top guy. OLB is a big need as is RB, but Curry is the only one to consider that early. So...Sanchez? Crabtree? Monroe? All would be fine with me. Sea's holes are not massive considering they are picking #4 overall.

Andrew (Austin)

Rumors out there of Edwards to Giants for a 1st and a 5th. Any truth?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

There have been rumors for some time now and that compensation surely makes sense. Both should say Yes. Best for both clubs. When Plex was let go, my immediate thought was that NYG had Boldin/Edwards/85 lined up.

Dylan (New York)

Would signing Miles Austin be a good move for the Jets? Is he worth a first round pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Not worth a first round pick. Upside there-sure, but he hasn't really done anything in this league yet.

Mark (Bangor, PA)

Matt, in the unlikely scenario that Crabtree and Curry are still on the board for the Browns... who do you take? They need help at both positions very badly.

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

They do, but I take Crabtree. Curry is an excellent-and safe-prospect, but LBs are easier to find than WRs and I consider Crabtree the best overall prospect in this draft. Also, Curry is not a Ware/Merriman type pass rushing OLB...which is more of what Clev needs. He could play ILB of course, but I want Crabtree.

Bobby(Cali)

Do you think the Raiders will draft a LT with the 7th overall pick? With Khalif Barnes on a 1yr deal and journeyman RTs dont you think drafting Andre Smith would be a good move by Oakland?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

I wouldn't have a problem with it, as Smith could be a heck of a OG in the meantime. Oak needs a lot though. Would take these guys (if I were in A Davis' shoes) over A Smith: Crabtree, Raji, Smith (Baylor), Monroe and maybe Orakpo or Maclin.

Robert Gallery

Yeah, Al, look how well I turned out.

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Obviously Gallery did not live up to his draft billing. No question about that. But, the guy is a pretty darn good OG right now and to his credit, I felt like Oak handled him very poorly to start his career.

David Fairborn, OH

What about Andre Smith in general? Have people warmed up to him now? I know he has a bad body, but so did Willie Anderson, etc.

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

A lot of bad bodies out there....including his for sure. But, he is the guy you run behind on 3rd and 1. Could be an elite RT or OG and an adaquate LT. That sounds like a top 10 pick to me. From all accounts, he isn't a bad person. Not an ax murderer.

Ted Washington (McDonald's)

Now that I'm retired, how much weight have I put on???

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Wow. Great question. Large mammal.

Josh ( Houston, TX)

Please complete the following This year Champ Bailey will: A. Struggle with injuries again all season B. Flourish with help finally from the safties in the Broncos backfield

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Be aided by some additional help in the secondary, but like his fellow old DB teammates, his legs will grow weary from running around in coverage all day as his pass rushers fail to reach opposing QBs.

Dylan (New York)

my bad... i meant a second rounder

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

No sweat

Benjamin (Plattsburgh)

How come I cant seem to give up on Alex Smith of the niners?..... something about him still tells me he still has a chance to live up to his status..... slight chance but still existent

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

I am not giving up either. He will never live up to the #1 overall pick-I have little doubt about that. But, I do think there is a chance that he saves face on his career.

M (DC)

Who will be realistically available to Redskins, when they pick at 13?

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

Oher would be a fine selection. Ayers? To me, it almost has to be a lineman or a trade down to pick up a few extra selections.

Carlos (Denver)

Will the Broncos seriously consider Knowshon at 12? They don't have a RB, but also have needs at every dline spot.

Matt Williamson
  (1:02 PM)

They don't have a RB....they have 28. Signed a ton of them this year. I think Moreno that early to Denver would be a horrible selection considering what they have in their front seven right now on D.

Dylan (New York)

How far wil Maclin actually fall? I've heard anywhere from #7 until around the mid 20's

Matt Williamson
  (1:02 PM)

No way he gets to 20

Matty Ice (PA)

Even though I did not get a question answered still the best chat in Sportsnation !!!!!!!!!!

Matt Williamson
  (1:04 PM)

What can I say to that? Well, on that note-much like Costanza leaving on a good note-I am out. Take care eveyone. It was a lot of fun. Tomorrow is my 11th Anny-shout out to my wonderful wife...wouldn't be hosting chats and watching football all day without all your support-love ya.
