Hang on everyone. I just talked to Bill and he's having Internet issues. He's going to try something and see if he can get on.
OK everyone. I talked to Bill again. We're going to push back the chat an hour. So he'll be here at 3 p.m. ET to chat!
Love the blog. Got a simple question. Who do the Raiders end up selecting on Draft day? (please take into account of who the six other teams infront are going to take)
I think they will take a receiver in the first round and a tacle in the second round.
Who do you think will get the starting QB job in Denver, Orton or Simms?
I think Orton will get the first crack. But if Simms is lights out (sorry, Chargers' fans) he could steal the job. Ultimately, I expect to see Orton as the quarterback.
Hey Bill, do you think cleveland would trade Rogers to the broncos for their 3rd and Scheffler? Then the broncos could get T Jackson and maybe Brown or Maybin at 18. That would be a huge upgrade to their front seven!
That could work.It would be good for both teams, I think.
What are the percentages that the Chargers will trade out of 16? Who do you see them trading with?
Percentage? 40 percent maybe? I think they'll look at teams at the bottom of the first round who want to come up and steal a quaretrback or a reciever. San Diego would love to get a second-round pick.
Bill - thanks for taking my question. I was under the impression that the Chargers had locked up much of their nucleus for years to come but when I look at them now I wonder. Rivers - Merriman - Gates - Jackson - Jammer - Spoles. There seems to be a lot of stars that could chnage teams. My question is with the demeanor of AJ and the demands of these players before the renegotiations of the CBA which do you believe stay and which are probably gone?
The team always loves locking up its best players. I wouldn't be surprised if Rivers and Gates were signed for the long-term before the season starts. Merriman and Jackson have to stay healthy this year before a long-term deal is signed.
If you're Scott Pioli and you're offered a 2nd rd pick for Gonzalez (as rumored). Do you make the trade? (bare in mind KC has their heir apparent Brad Cottam)
If I was running the show in Kansas City, I'd do what I could to make Gonzalez happy and to make him want to play in Kansas City as long as he could. The guy is special. He should never wear another NFL uniform.
It's recently been suggested that the Broncos need to move up to draft Matt Sanchez because, "If they go 4-12 with Orton [McDaniels]'s fired. If they go 4-12 with Sanchez, he's rebuilding." I wish this were true! But it seems to me that if Pat Bowlen were going to eat crow, pay 3 Head Coaches salaries (Shanahan, McDaniels, and a new coach), and look like an idiot, he would have done it before he traded Cutler. I see no way on Heaven or Earth that Bowlen fires McDaniels after this season, whether they draft a QB or not, and regardless of the record. What do you hear?
I agree but who would have ever imagined what happened this offseason? It has shown anything is possible.
If Denver trades up to the #8 spot, which many believe they will, who will they get: Raji or Sanchez?
Raji. I think he is very high on Denver's draft board.
Patriot coordinators don't fair to well when they leave New England. How do you see Denver's new coach panning out?
Not sure but it has been a horrendous start.
Hey bill love the blog. I don't love that Aaron Curry supposedly isnt a good fit for a 3-4 defense. Draft him anyways, draft OL, or trade down.
Some scouts are woried about him fitting in a 3-4. But others say he is so smart and talented, he'll be great in a 3-4 defense. The biggest question is what the Chiefs think?
Will someone please take 85 off our hands already!!
B-Dub! What can you tell us about Maclin, well besides that he's fast? There's a lot of talk pegging Maclin as the Raiders' pick at seven. I saw Crabtree play and he seems like the "goods" but Maclin didn't have the exposure that he did.
Maclin may not be a finished product. But he is a deep threat who can also return. I think Crabtree is a safer bet.
Does Denver trade up in the draft or stay put? Have you heard anything?
I think Denver will move up and down throughout the draft because of all the ammo it has.
D.J. Williams is a great OLB, but moving to the 3-4, I don't see him as an OLB like Ware, Harrison, Merriman etc. Do the Broncos keep him at OLB, move him back to ILB, or do they trade him if he doesn't fit in their 3-4?
He's been moved around so much, we'll see. I think he may play inside. Denver has a minicamp this weekend so we might get a clue.
What do you think Mike Shannahan thinks of the Broncos' offseason?
I could only imagine.
Hey Bill, do you have any thoughts on Barden Ramses, the wideout from Cal Poly?
A lot of teams like him in the second round. I know Oaland loves him.
How is a 3rd round pick for Shaun Rogers good? So you are saying the value for the best Browns player on the team is a 3rd round pick?
Tight end Tony Scheffler was also part of the chatter's proposal. Scheffler can play.
Bill, Who are some targets for the Broncos in rounds 2 and 3, and what late-round QBs do they seem to like?
Boston College DT Ron Brace ... the QBS include Stephen McGee of Texas A&M and Graham Harrell of Texas Tech.
Hey bill love the blog. Knowing Scott Pioli's reputation in the draft what are the odds of a big time trade come draft day to get the Chiefs some more picks. If so whos gone LJ, B. Waters, Tony G, or someone else? PS- Don't you love that the Cutler situation is finally dead and over with and you don't have to cover it anymore
Thanks, Mark. If you're asking me who do I think has the best chance of being dealt on draft day I think it would be Waters. Buffalo perhaps ... And yes, I'm glad the Cutler saga is in the books. It was wild.
Do the Broncos think they're set at RB with the 6 headed monster (Buckhalter, Arrington, Jordan, Young, Torrain, and Hillis), none of whom is an every-down back, or might they surprise us with a RB in Rounds 1 or 2?
I would not be shocked if Beanie Wells of Ohio State is the choice at No. 18 if he is on the board.
Bill, love the blog. My question is about the safety position for the Chargers. The spot opposite Weddle is enormous, but I don't see any reasonable fits through free agency or the draft. Do you think they'll try and deal with Clinton Hart for another year? Maybe try someone off the bench?
Thanks, John, the Chargers could try to get a second-round pick and take a safety or maybe move someone such as Antoine Cason to safety. They need an upgrade.
Beanie Wells? How about Knowshon Moreno? He actually showed up for the Broncos private workout
Maybe, I think they they like Wells better.
How many years do you think Champ Bailey has left? I'm thinkin 3-4 years
Yeah, 3-5 years. last year was the first time he dealt with injuries. He needs to stay healthy this year.
I know Raiders have other need but do you think the Raiders will take more than 1 receiver in the draft. Take Crabtree with the 7th, Ebbon Britton or Phil Loadholt with their 2nd Round pick, and hope they can get RAMSES Barden with their 3rd rounder.
If the Cal Poly reciever was there in the third round, Oakland would likely take him.
Hey Bill, Denver didn't go to the USC pro day. Is Denver avoiding USC as a smoke screen? Do you see Denver take a Rey Maualuga at 12 or 18?
They are being coy. I have no earthly idea why an NFL team would skip the USC Pro Day.
A prediction from you, Bill: If the Broncos don't draft a starting LB, who would their starting 4 likely be? I can't get a handle on this.
Just a guess (because I think they will take a linebacker): Dumervil, Williams, Woodyard, Davis.
If the Broncos trade up to the #8 spot, what would they have to give up?
Probably No. 12 and a third rounder.
Do I hold any value when it comes to Draft Day trades?
I think you have more value as a backup with the Chiefs.
Do you think Woodyard could be a quality starter?
He is a playmaker but he will have to adjust to the 3-4.
Bill, Is there any chance the Broncos decide to tear down and rubuild, by which I mean dealing Champ Bailey while he's still worth a 1 and a 4 or whatever he's worth right now? And while we're at it, trade any other valuable, aging pieces on the team?
Because he is 30 and coming off an injury-shortened season I dion't think the team would be able to get just value for him. He should be kept.
Should the chiefs sell high on glenn dorsey especially after his miserable rookie season and the fact that he is WAY too small to play NT in a 3-4? We could probably get decent return for him.
If they can get a top-10 pick for him, but it won't be easy.
Woody Paige brought up the point that this season, schedule wise, is very similar to the '05 season, where they went 13-3. I also recall that many didn't expect much from Jake Plummer and the fact we had a former FB (Anderson) starting at RB. Many don't expect much out of Denver again, like '05, and we hav a tough sched, like '05. Do you see another season in '09 like Denver had in '05?
13-3? Ummm, no.
Bill, agree or disagree....3 years from now, we will look back and see Maualuga as one of the top 5 players from this draft.
Will M bush still be a Raider after draft day? Hopefully Fargas won't and bush will be....
I think Bush stays. He better be kept. That dude can play.
Who will take me away from the Chiefs and what am I worth?
Your agent says you want to stay, Larry.
Bill, is Antonion Gates' age and injuries last year a cause for concern for SD, or will he continue to be a top TE for a few more years?
He fought through injuries and played well. If he can have an injury-free 2009, he'll be fine.
maybe if i make my name ryan i can get an answer...just tell me ANYTHING good about the RAIDERS...will get get. BOLDIN,JOHNSON,PEPPERS,WILLIAMS,CRABTREE
I say Crabtree, Ryan. Or whoever you are?
Bill thanks for the great chats, us denver post readers miss you. Is Mark sanchez really that great of a fit for McDaniels O (McDaniels is the man by the way) or is it just the experts saying he could go to Denver cause Cutler is now gone?
A combination of both. But I think McDaniels is leaning toward playing Orton.
What odds would you put on KC staying at 3?
80 percent. There has not bee a trade involving a top-seven pick since 2005.
The Browns traded a 3rd and Bodden for Rogers. There's no way they would accept a 3rd and a TE for him after a Pro Bowl season.
Let's be clear, though, folks. I'm not reporting this. It was just suggested by a chatter. Thanks, BW.
Bill, above you said about M. Bush "that guy can play". I completely agree. So why then did they draft McFadden? I know no one cant make sense of Al Davis, but Bush and Fargas would have been fine, and they could have gone elsewhere in the draft to help out the team as a whole. I just dont get it. Are they going to draft Wells at #7 this year?
They fell in love with McFadden's speed. No on Wells, I think.
What's up with B.Marshell will he start the year suspended or play?
We may find out the answer to that in the next few weeks.
Do you see any player taking a draft day fall in the first round?
I'm hearing Florida receiver Percy Harvin a little bit.
Who would you rather have on your team: Crabtree (possesion) or Maclin (speed + returns)?
Crabtreee: Pro Bowl.
BW, we need an NT bad. If we don't get Raji, will you suit up and put ur hand in the dirt. Your a big guy, c'mon you could do it
Thanks, but no thanks.
If LJ leaves could you see KC drafting a RB like Ian Johnson in the later rounds?
I'm interested in seeing where Ian Johnson goes. He's tough and he can make an impact on special teams.
Here's a scenario for Denver on draft day, hit me with ur thoughts on it: 12th: Jackson 18th: Cushing 2nd round: Ron Brace
The Broncos would be thrilled with that trio.
Bill, doesn't the NFL almost have to give the Broncos an answer on Marshall before the draft, and not like the night before either?
My personal opinion is that Denver should go after defense in the first 2 rounds and then worry about a quarterback in the later rounds if at all. What do you think?
I think the Broncos may agree with you, John.
Do you think Michael Bush looks like a young Jamal Lewis
Yeah, a little. Good call, Joey.
Why do you think the Chiefs cut Will Franklin? Scheme or work etic? He seemed to be a promissing young WR, but got injured last year.
I heard it was scheme.
Hey Bill, How about the Raiders trade 2nd RD Pick and Bush for Ocho Cinco, then Draft Crabtree. Would that be considered a good off season for the Raiders?
Where do you get the tackle at?
I'm hearing that the Raiders are taking a long look at M.Oher, is that bs or fact?
I think he's being considered by Oakland, yes.
I think you look like Tony Siragusa? Good call?
Bad, bad call, Brenden.
Bill, Which players on the existing roster does Denver see as major pieces of the DL puzzle? We seem to have a lot of guys who are better for the 4-3 at DL.
WIlliams and Bailey.
Your take, Bill: Malcolm Jenkins, CB or S?
Safety ... San Diego perhaps?
Who do you think is gonna be the best sleeper pick this year? Any like Slaton last year?
I like the Arizona receiver/returner, Mike Thomas, I do believe.
Would you want Crabtree or Bolden, What do you think the Raiders should Get?
Crabtree. He has more ywars left and he'd cost less to get.
Big picture question: Which team is likely to be the first to see the playoffs again: Denver, Oakland, Kansas City? Which will take the longest to see the playoffs?
First: Kansas City ... Longest: Denver.
Bill, I take it you are siding with Cutler in this whole Cutler/Broncos deal. You don't seem too optimistic about Bronco record this year....can you give any positives for the upcoming Denver season?
The offense can still be OK, but not great.
QB Tom Brandstater from Fresno State. Remember that name, because Denver will take him in the later rounds. They wont take an early QB because Josh's ego is way to big to admit he needs a franchise QB.
I could see that, Brandon. McDaniels loves to discover QBs.
you really think KC will be in playoffs before the raiders?? thats a reach!!!
Is Oakland on the doorstep of the playoff? Both teams are rebuilding.
So you're saying KC is going to win the West this year??
No, I'm not. San Diego.
Your Prediction: Date on which Josh McDaniels' tenure in Denver ends?
I reserve the right to change my mind often: Jan. 2, 2011.
Biggest homefield advantage in the AFC West is?
Right now, it's San Diego because the Chargers have done more with it lately than the other three teams.
Can Ryan Clady run block? Or just pass block?
Clady is the goods, both ways.
This year, we saw a big change in the "anchor" of a D. In the past, it used to be the MLB, but now with the 3-4 becoming popular, and the trend of pass first O's, the safety seems to have become the anchor of the modern NFL. My question, if guys like Dawkins, Polamalu, Reed, Sanders, etc. impact D's so greatly, why aren't safety's drafted as high as other positions?
Awesome, question. Every great defense has a great safety. But they are hard to find. Taylor Mays, of USC, will be in huge demand next year.
Hey, great hour everyone. Sorry for the computer glitch that caused the delay. Talk to you two days before the draft.
