What is up, MMA Nation? Good to have you back for another chat. And great news today. As many of you know, Kenny Florian is here for the next half-hour taking your questions. Plenty of controversy to discuss after UFC 97. Ken-Flo is here so, fire away!
Kenflo and Anik means double trouble! ha! You guys think Anderson Silva should make a move to 205 so he can be challenged? Or should he just stay at 185? His last 2 fights weren't worthy of a headlining event in my opinion. What do the experts think?
He has challenges in both divisions, 205 and 185.
Kenny, Is BJ Penn- without question- the toughest opponent you will have ever faced?
Yes. But I think that about all of my opponents.
What's next for Liddell? Does he retire? He clearly has a drive to keep fighting? Don't be another Ken Shamrock...
Ultimately, Chuck will make that decision. I don't think it'll be the UFC that makes that decision. I don't believe he will be a challenger for the belt in the future, but I still think he's got a couple more fights in him.
I wouldn't mind seeing him retire, though. I certainly don't want to see him get injured.
Skipping class to be here this morning. Kenny, did you have it 29-28 Wiman like most sane people?
I honestly thought the fight could've gone either way.
hey kenny, i know your a soccer guy, and i heard Jon doing some mls stuff, but there are a few other guys in MMA with Soccer backrounds doing you think the training in soccer helps at all in mma?
I definitely do. Footwork, coordination, aerobic capacity. All benefits to my MMA career.
is kenny going to be training with kurt pellegrino for their august fights.
Hi Jon and Kenny, Ken-flo I'm a big fan of yours once you beat BJ Penn for the title which loss would like to avenge Sean Sherk or Diego?
My focus is solely on BJ Penn. Not looking that far ahead. Both Sherk and Diego are equally attractive as future opponents.
Jon, LOVE the show, as always. And great work on Bellator. Heard a rumor that KenFlo is sitting over your shoulder during this week's chat. Tell him that BJ Penn said you are a B if you tap on strikes.
UFC in Boston in November? Bring It On!
After last week's hearing at the State House, I think there is a good possibility we will see the UFC in Boston before the end of the year. The committee in the hearing was very receptive, and there wasn't any opposition. Fingers crossed.
KFlow...how was training with GSP? Do u think working with him will give you a huge advantage?
Training with GSP was awesome and something I've always wanted to do. I don't see it as an advantage for this fight, but it will help me become a better fighter overall.
Kenny, I work in Brookline, how come I never see you out and about greeting the common folk?
I'm always walking around Coolidge Corner! But, I'm a pretty busy guy.
Kenny, Who poses the biggest challenge for Silva at 185? He already beat Hendo and Nate the Great. Bisping and Maia i guess? Is Nate better prepared now to face Silva?
Hard to say. I do believe Nate will be much better prepared this time around. And I think he's a better fighter than he was then. Mentally and physically.
Kenny, was wondering if you ever sparred with the Gracie's and how much do you give them credit for opening the door for you to make a lot of money? (Hi to all US Veterans!!!)
The Gracies are the reason I do what I do. My first experience with BJJ was with Royce Gracie. I've had the honor of training with many Gracies over my Brazilian jiu-jitsu career.
So here's your weekly dose of pop culture... Chuck Lidell is in the new Mandy Moore video. I am in desperate need of your thoughts on this.
Get outta here! Is he really?
After the debacle at UFC 97 is Demian Maias shot at the champ all but lost?
It's possible. But I believe Demain Maia's BJJ abilities make him a bigger threat if the fight does hit the ground.
ok so Jon has been leaning towards Evans over machida the last couple of weeks, please be the voice of reason and tell him why lyoto is the favorite
It is very difficult in my mind coming up with a gameplan to beat Machida right now. It's gonna take patience, speed, and a perfect strategy to beat him. He will certainly be tough to finish for anybody in that weight class. Take that, Anik.
Happy 50th episode! (for tomorrow) Love the show and chat. Florian, you've come a long way since episode 1. Anik, always great!
Thanks, Caroline. We appreciate you watching.
Ken-Flo! A lot of pros still have to coach/run gyms or hold down jobs. It seems like in your spot you are past that, but can you give us a taste of what a typical camp daily training schedule looks like and how you balance that against work?
I have an extremely busy schedule. I don't have time to screw around, like Anik does. But I still do keep a six-day-a-week training schedule, and train two times per day. Not to mention my work with others at the Florian Martial Arts Center.
Intrestingly, Lidell also loses to Mandy Moore. If that's not a sign his career is over, I'm not sure what is.
Hi Jon and Kenny, love the show. Shogun was pretty impressive on Saturday. Do you think he's back to his old ways or do you think it's too early to tell considering Chuck's situation? Are we gonna have to see Shogun go the distance to be able to say he's back for good?
Shogun looked great. He was patient, yet was aggressive enough to pressure Chuck and get him to make mistakes. He capitalized beautifully with his left hook.
Kenny - Big fan of your work. I'll be in Philly cheering you on bro! Buy or Sell: KenFlo vs Diego Sanchez in 2010 for your first title defense?
First things first! But I'll buy.
Kenny how did you end up the fighter and your brother the trainer? Any chance we see the other Florian in the cage?
I always thought it would be the other way around. It's worked out great thus far. If Keith ever chose to, he would be a beast.
We want McNeil!!!! We want McNeil!!!
McNeil is in the house!!!
Heard the new movie "Fighting" is loosely based on your life, is this true? And, are you going to see it?
Hahaha...Lot of comedy in the chat today. I am much better looking than the main character.
Report: Franklin McNeil will be chatting today with Jon Anik from 11:30 am to 12 noon
They better be at the production meeting with me.
Hey Kenny, have you ever sported a perm? Do they ever really go out of style?
Ever since I saw Mike Brady sport one, I've been wanting to do it. Perhaps it'll debut at UFC 101.
What is next for Cheick Kongo? Is a fight with Shane Carwin for the #1 contender a possibility?
I'd like to keep both of those guys separate so they can both challenge for the belt in the future. Kongo could get the Mir-Lesnar winner.
So what?s the deal with Diego calling you out says he moving down to 155 because he sees you whiping people, you have to be dieing to get in the cage with him again, I know I am dieing to see you apply a nice RNC, or maybe arm bar his sweet barbed wire tattoo
Right now my focus is on BJ. Of course, I'd like another shot at Diego. But I just can't afford to think about that right now, despite all of your inquiries.
McNeil, you went out on a limb picking Silva with a sub in round 2. What was your reasoning behind that pick being that Leites has such a good ground game?
I really thought Silva would go for broke, considering the Cote fight. And what better way to silence his critics than by submitting a BJJ black belt. And he's capable of doing that.
Buy or Sell... Okami vs. Maia for #1 Contender & Marquardt vs. Silva for the belt
I would love to see Okami vs. Maia.
Hey Franklin, a guy in my office at work swears he could submit Cris Cyborg. But I told him if a chick is willing to get a crazy tatoo across her whole back, she'd be willing to choke you out. You think the average guy could KO a professional woman without much training?
No I don't. Your friend would not submit Cyborg. Other women, maybe. But not her.
Kenny, from overseas, do you think that fighters are starting to become too cautious in the ring and that there has been a rise in the guys called counter punchers vying for titles? I just think Lyoto and Rashad could turn into a snooze fest since neither is a fan of pushing the action until it is to their absolute advantage. I have concerns about the 98 main event (altho Serra Hughes should be a bloodbath)
I believe the level of the athletes is getting more technical. Gone are the days of Tank Abbott and others who would throw caution to the wind and start throwing haymakers.
Kenny...what fight are you looking forward to the most as a fan?
Alves-GSP will be interesting.
When are we going to see a cooking segment with Franlin McNeil? I would love to see the prepartion he goes through in picking a donut during the production meeting.
Hahaha. McNeil is about to have a heart attack he's laughing so hard.
I read that "The Crow" got stomped this past weekend. Is he done?
I think Loiseau's physical and technical abilities have never been questioned. He has some mental barriers he needs to work through.
Machida is going to dominate Evans, no?
I don't think either guy will dominate. Too close to call between two counter fighters, really.
Anderson Silva is just bored. Cote/Leites had no business being in the octagon with him and there is no challenge for him at 185. He needs be at 205 and fight a top-notch 205er. Perhaps the loser of Machida/Evans.
Hey Mr. McNeil, there arent enough events in new jersey, if it wasnt for the garden state ufc wouldn't be where it is today why no love? can we get a title fight in AC? or Newark?
It's tough. I spoke to Scott Coker about coming to Jersey and he definitely expressed interest. But there is no timetable set.
What is next for Rich Franklin or Wanderlei with a loss at UFC 99?
They are still both very marketable fighters. I think Rich would most likely stay at 205, where is Wanderlei would remain at 185. Rich most likely has more total fights left in him than Wanderlei.
This question is for Franklin: Was wondering how he has adapted to life in quiet Bristol? I know it's not the big city like Newark, but they still have attractive middle aged women.
As a writer, I get to live in New Jersey. I come to Bristol once or twice a week to haze Anik and Florian. I have a good life.
Hey Kenny, I hoping to be at UFC 101 to see you crowned as new LW champ.
Thanks very much. I hope so too.
I know Kenny has a blackbelt in BJJ, but I have to think he wants to stay on his feet against BJ Penn.
I'm not ruling out anything. I'll be ready for this fight to go anywhere.
Kenny - You look pretty realistic in the video game. What do you think about being in UFC 2009 Undisputed?
Very cool. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine being in a video game. I can now kick my own a**.
Kenny you mentioned on the first segment of training table that your diet gets crazy the week leading up to the fight. Could you elaborate? As an amateur fighter this would help alot.
Really, it's too much to mention, unfortunately. I have a nutritionist and a cook the week of the fight that advises me on my diet. It also varies, depending on how much weight I have to lose that week. Good luck with your budding career.
FOR Kenny Florian...Just got off work at the state prison here in Daytona. Jon, sorry for the bombardment of questions and comments, but I got off at 800am, and Im going to bed. I miss your chat, and Ill read the chat log later on. Its been a while. KEN Flo, Im from Springfield, Mass., a fellow yankee, lived there 15 years. WHEN are you gonna fight B.J Penn for the title? How much longer? After him running his mouth about "to the death" to GSP, Id like to see you close it for him, and get it!
It'll be August 8th at UFC 101 in Philly, and it can't come soon enough.
Anik, Is Bellator coming to Vegas? I'd buy tickets for sure.
Anik says Bellator will not be in Vegas for Season 1, but hopefully at some point in the future.
I work at a prison too but you don't see me telling eveyrone my life story. Go Franklin!
What do ya'll think the chances are that we ever see Fedor in the UFC?
I would love to see it. But I'm not holding my breath. I'm not sure Fedor really feels he needs to. McNeil adds the odds are slim to none.
Where do you guys like to hang out together? Do you have any hot spots for boys nights out? I'd love to meet up with you guys sometime!
I'm too big for Anik. Maybe someday.
Quinton, keep you eyes peeled here: http://bellator.com/schedule.html Might not be in Vegas, but at least you'll see where they are headed.
Hey guys, this is a question for all of you. After the rather grime fights form Silva lately, what's the chances that Dana lets Silva fight Roy Jones Jr in a boxing match (per Silva?s request) and if Dana won't let that happen, what do you think the odds are that Dana will do a catch weight for a GSP vs Silva fight? I mean Silva could use some tougher opponents after watching the last two fights (although I thought Cote had a good shot before the freak injury).
McNeil: It won't happen. Dana is more focused on encouraging Anderson to get back to being an aggressive fighter and improving his PPV drawing power.
What is your take on the Nate Diaz vs Joe Daddy fight? Joe Daddy is in desperate need of a win. Is that safe to say?
That is safe to say. Stevenson desparately needs this win. He'll have his hands full with Nate Diaz, but it's definitely a winnable fight. But he'll have to work for it.
Folks, sorry to cut it short, but we've got a production meeting for Episode #50 of MMA Live. I will be chatting solo next week, and will be here for at least an hour, if not two. Also, we have a new feature on the MMA page at espn.com, 'The Chatterbox'. It archives all of my chats, so you don't have to go searching for the transcripts. If your question went unanswered today, send it to email@example.com. Thanks for chatting. Until next week. -JA, KF, FM
