Chat about the NFL draft!

Matt Mosley
 (9:57 AM)

We're starting a bit early this morning because NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert's breathing down my neck, which can be awkward at times. We already have more than 120 folks in line, so this should be fun. And we're off and running!

Steve, the borough of manhattan

Matt, Nothing would make me happier as a giants fan to get 3 of the following players, what are the chances nicks or Britt or Robiskie Laurinitis or Sintim Beatty, Unger or Mack

Matt Mosley
 (10:00 AM)

I think the Giants will sit there and see who falls to them. They landed a starting safety by waiting at the bottom of the first round. I think they like Britt a lot because he's a very familiar player (Rutgers). If Nicks is there, it will be a tough decision. I think there are some things that concern you about Nicks (recent weight gain), but he probably has more upside. You already have a pretty good center in O'Hara, but Mack is the guy who you would consider out of Cal. And I know the Giants personnel department really likes him.

Bob (Fairport, NY)

So with the New York Daily News saying the trade talks with the Browns for Braylon Edwards are over because they were asking for a 1st and Kiwanuka, who do you see the Giants going for now?

Matt Mosley
 (10:02 AM)

I never believe something's officially OVER until the season begins. If the Giants have a setback in training camp, it could put them in an even tougher position. Anyone remember the Jason Taylor trade. An injury to Phil Daniels is what bailed our friend Bill Parcells out after he took a hardline approach with the Pro Bowler. So while the Edwards thing might not be "imminent" at this time, I'm not calling it dead.

Kevin (Glastonbury, CT)

Matt, I'm tired of reading what receiver the giants are going to draft when I don't think they'll have that pick. Who could be a possible picks for their two second rounders?

Matt Mosley
 (10:05 AM)

You can never have enough corners, and the kid out of Utah is someone to keep an eye. Also D.J. Moore out of Vandy. I also think Jerry Reese could take a tight end with one of those picks. But that may happen Day 2. Chase Coffman is a kid out of Mizzou that has amazing hands. Built a little like Boss, but I think he's a more explosive player. Also a kid out of Rice named James Casey that a lot of teams are fascinated with. Can play QB in the Wildcat. Return punts. Play fullback. And play a pretty mean tight end. Former baseball player who's ready roll.

Matt, Chicago

Hey Mosley!! If Duke Robinson, Max Unger, William Moore, Larry English and Brian Robiskie are on the clock at #51; who do you take if your JJ? Thanks!

Matt Mosley
 (10:07 AM)

I'd have to go with Robiskie -- although I'm not sure he's there. He doesn't look like a No. 1, but he could be an excellent No. 2. Some people have said his best-case scenario is becoming a Boldin-type player. He's not as thick and tough as Boldin, though. He does have excellent hands. And I had one scout tell me he's a big posssession guy with some decent speed. A lot of teams could use a guy like this. I think he'd compete for the No. 2 job in Dallas immediately.

Dave C (Rochester, NY)

I think that Matt Stafford is simply the second coming of Jamarcus Russell - over-rated because of his arm strength an known to be a wildly poor decision maker. When will teams pick good decision making over arm strength? Wasn't that why the Patriots stuck with Brady over Bledsoe? A franchise quarterback needs most to be consistent.

Matt Mosley
 (10:10 AM)

I know this isn't NFC Beast related, but I'll take it anyway. There have been some questions about Russell's conditioning and approach to the game. Not so with Stafford. Yes, I think Sanchez might be more accurate. But Stafford has the bigger gun -- and that's why he'll be the first pick. I'm hearing quite a few personnel types compare him to Jay Cutler. And that's not a bad comparison for Stafford. Cutler's been good enough to warrant a slew of draft picks for his services.

Rich Rodriguez

People who chat about the NFL draft need to get lives

Matt Mosley
 (10:10 AM)

Rich, welcome to the chat.

kyle, pa

great that we are finally talking giants...everyones talking wideout but i want to know what we are trying to fill in the secondary? y did we not try to get some free agent like buchanon or mcfadden to tighten the screws a bit in the air defense? are they looking to fill the gaps with more rookies? i mean ross was brilliant his rookie season and phillips will be better in his sophomore year, but what is reese planning on doing with that secondary?

Matt Mosley
 (10:12 AM)

I think you're pretty solid back there, Kyle. Who do you consider the weak link? Johnson? I think Phillips will come on strong and Ross will be fine. Both corners look like Pro Bowlers to me. The name to remember late in the first or in the second is Louis Delmas out of Western Michigan. Write that down somewhere and keep it handy.

Ryan (Fairfax, VA)

Hey Matt. I keep hearing the Redskins need for an O Lineman but with such a deep OLine class don't you think they should get a DE to flank Haynesworth and an OLineman in later rounds?

Matt Mosley
 (10:15 AM)

This team has neglected interior linemen in the draft for years. I think they need to be patient at 13 and see who's there. I actually think it's a good place to be. There's always a chance someone like Andre Smith or Mike Oher is sitting there. And you could also hope for Brian Orakpo or even Ayers from Tennessee. But I agree that if you're going to guarantee Haynesworth $41 mil, it makes sense to surround him at least one or two talented (young) defensive ends. Right now it's Andre Carter and some geezers.

Sanjay (Da Iladel, PA)

Considering the Skins signed Haynesworth to compete right now, won't drafting a guy like Sanchez, who is clearly not ready to start immediately with his limited college experience, set the Redskins playoff chances back a couple years? I think it would be difficult to keep Campbell as a starter with one year left on his contract and Sanchez as a backup.

Matt Mosley
 (10:18 AM)

Franchise quarterbacks are hard to come by. If the 'Skins have truly fallen in love with Sanchez (and I'm not convinced they have), then you don't have a bunch of "win now" discussions. Did anyone think the Falcons would "win now" after drafting Ryan. I think you'd bring the kid in and let him compete with Campbell. If Campbell wins, that might actually be a positive thing.

Mike (Atlanta, GA)

Matt, love your stuff. Eagles - Moreno or Pettigrew?

Matt Mosley
 (10:19 AM)

Thanks, Mike. I sense that they'd go with Moreno. But that's not what I'd do. I'd get Brandon Pettigrew and move on down the road. He's a complete tight end. Better than a lot of these guys we've seen over the past few years (Olsen types). If I'm the Ravens, I'm praying Pettigrew's still there at No. 26.

Prashaun Collins (Tampa,FL)

Do you think the recent stories about Percy Harvin take him down to a 2nd round pick instead of a late 1st?

Matt Mosley
 (10:20 AM)

I think there's a good chance of that happening, although I'm still seeing him projected late in the first. Extremely talented player. I had one personnel man tell me that Harvin was a lot like last year's second-round phenom DeSean Jackson -- in several respects.

Jon (New York, New York

As a die hard Giants fan, I would like to know whether you think the Giants will do a trade that does not involve Edwards? Maybe trade up in the draft.

Matt Mosley
 (10:21 AM)

The only receiver in this draft who can step in Day 1 and be a No. 1 receiver is Michael Crabtree. He has that type of ability. Do you think Reese will come all the way up to No. 5 to get him? Me neither.

Rob (Mississippi)

Has Todd Heap's talent really diminished that much that fast?

Matt Mosley
 (10:21 AM)

"Just a guy" is the word on the street.

Tyler (Sacramento, CA)

I've seen a couple reports and mock drafts that say the Cowboys might be looking at Rice TE James Casey. That'd be crazy right? We're already stacked at TE and we have a decent FB in Cricket. Please tell me Dallas goes either WR or DB.

Matt Mosley
 (10:23 AM)

One of those was a Beast report. I think the Cowboys are hoping Casey falls a little bit. I don't think they'll take him at No. 51 but they may move back several spots and try to get him. Very versatile. Can return punts, play QB in the Wildcat, play fullback, tight end and deep snap. Seriously! So I wouldn't completely dismiss this thing. I also think the Dolphins like the kid a lot.

Kendall (Bronx, NY)

This is more of a statement, but I think Pettigrew makes the most sense for the Eagles. Technically, the tight end is a lineman especially one who can block. Andy loves to sure up his line. With his blocking ability, size and armspan, that gives them another potential red-zone threat opening up things for Westy and Celek and Deshawn. It makes the whole offense better.

Matt Mosley
 (10:24 AM)

Amen!

Bob (Fairport, NY)

Everyone has been saying that Jerry Reese isn't going to let himself be forced to grab a receiver with the 29th pick, so who could be there that you think the Giants would consider over taking a WR?

Matt Mosley
 (10:26 AM)

I think Laurinaitis is a name to remember. Matthews seems like a Reese-type guy as well. I think the Giants are sort of looking down the road and thinking of Pierce's replacement. I also think the Giants will be looking for a corner slipping in the draft. The CB out of UConn. Is it Darrius Butler? Doing this off the top of my head.

Trevor (Hilton Head, SC)

Do you think that Ronnie Brown really might be traded for draft picks?

Matt Mosley
 (10:27 AM)

I think Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland will listen to pretty much anything, but no, I don't think Brown will be traded. He's still too valuable to the Dolphins. Save this one for Tim Graham.

Ricky (Buffalo)

Matt, the Giants have enough talent at WR. WRs need time on the field to grow (Moss and Manningham). Also, Eli needs to be able to find WRs who aren't giants (pun intended) like Burress.

Matt Mosley
 (10:28 AM)

Sorry, I don't agree with you. I've seen nothing from either one of those guys that would make me OK heading into this season without a true frontline receiver. I agree that you can win football games in a variety of ways. But it puts so much pressure on the running game when you can't make plays in the vertical game. I'm not sure the Giants can right now.

Travis (Jacksonville, FL)

Analysts are saying that the Jaguars may pick a QB at #8. Me personally think it is ludacris, what are your thoughts?

Matt Mosley
 (10:30 AM)

Everything's a smokescreen right now...But keep in mind that Del Rio's tied in pretty close to that whole USC scene. I wouldn't be surprised if he grabbed Sanchez at No. 8.

Brian, Philly PA

Hi Matt! Is there any way the Eagles would be able to nab Boldin without giving up the 1st rounder #21? Possibly swap 1st rounders with Arizona and throw a 2nd or 3rd in this year and a performance based pick in 2010?

Matt Mosley
 (10:30 AM)

Don't see it happening -- unless the Cards get desperate. They're not there at this point.

scott(Houston, TX)

who do you like better for the Texans Brian Cushing or Clay Matthews and do you think one of them well be the Texans pick?

Matt Mosley
 (10:31 AM)

I think Cushing's the better player. A pass-rushing threat. Could be really disruptive. Matthews will be a nice player, but he was more of a special teams ace at USC than anything else.

Aaron (Gambier, OH)

If Crabtree falls past Jacksonville, where do you see him going (assuming no trades)?

Matt Mosley
 (10:32 AM)

That's not happening. See all those smokescreens coming out of Cleveland? That's as far as the kid slips. He's that good.

Scot

Trying to get this question through - Eagles and Cowboys rumored to be looking at Pat White. As a Giants fan and WVU grad this would kill me. Where does he land in your opinion and what round?

Matt Mosley
 (10:33 AM)

I don't think the Cowboys will take him -- unless he slips a LONG way. And it's not like the Eagles are going to the Wildcat. I don't think Andy Reid wants some sort of Slash type player. So I wouldn't worry about either of those teams.

Easy, Sumter SC

Are the Iggles going to return the extra #1 pick they got from Carolina last year for Peppers? JP is holding Carolina hostage - If not the Iggles, will a deal get done with SOMEONE pre-/during the draft? At this point I would take a 2nd, a 3rd, and a bucket of hotwings at the 1st home game for him!

Matt Mosley
 (10:35 AM)

Easy, tell the fellas on the base hello...JP's not coming to Philly. Wants WAY too much money.

Joe (Charlotte, NC)

Any chance that Aaron Curry or Brian Orakpo fall to the Bills at 11? Who do you see them taking with their two first rounders?

Matt Mosley
 (10:36 AM)

Well, they could certainly use an OT after the Peters trade. So if Oher's there at No. 11, I think that's a possibility. And they'll pray that Pettigrew somehow slips to that other pick.

B.J. (Lake Tahoe)

Who do you think ends-up with the best draft grade out of the Beast teams?

Matt Mosley
 (10:38 AM)

The Giants and Eagles have so many picks (early) that it's hard to see them screwing anything up. The Cowboys won't be much of a factor on Saturday, but Jerry will do a lot of dealin' on Sunday. The Redskins only have five picks. Hard to make a huge impact with a handful of picks. I'm sure they're regretting the Taylor deal big time. But it was hard to blame them for pulling the trigger at the time.

Brandon(Seattle, Wa)

Why is everyone so set on Seattle drafting Sanchez? We have more pressing needs especially when next year has a much better QB class to get that QB of the future... these 2 QB's would be 2/3 rounders next year. Spend the money on crabtree or curry!!!

Matt Mosley
 (10:40 AM)

Well, hopefully you're not sitting up there drafting in the top five next year. So-called franchise QBs don't come around very often. If the Seahawks are convinced that Sanchez is their guy, you can't be looking to next year's draft. I'd just bide my time with Hasselbeck until Robert Griffin leaves Baylor!!

Rich (Watertown NY)

What are the chances the Rams can trade thier 2nd pick for more picks in the draft? And how hard would it be to get rid of Marc Bulger?

Matt Mosley
 (10:41 AM)

I don't think any of those top three teams have much of a chance of trading down.

Jared (Washington, DC)

Matt, I hear ya on the Pettigrew over Moreno arguement for the Eagles. If they go that route, how do the Birds address the obvious need for skill positions later in the draft?

Matt Mosley
 (10:43 AM)

There are some really nice receivers a little later in the draft (see Jarrett Dillard from Rice), so I wouldn't worry too much about the skill positions. At running back, you see productive backs come out of the second and third rounds all the time (Westbrook for instance). I don't think the Eagles should feel compelled to take a RB in the first round -- unless they're just in love with the kid. Not convinced that's the case with Moreno.

Jordan (Austin, TX)

Do you know how the cowboys feel about Duke Robinson, I personally would love to have him as an upgrade over Kyle Kosier....actually have you heard about any beast teams being interested in him?

Matt Mosley
 (10:44 AM)

They're VERY familiar with this kid -- as well as the enormous OT Loadholt. So yes, those are definite possibilities in that second round.

vic (dc) [via mobile]

do u think the redskins will move up to get sanchez? or do they hope for maybin or orakpo to drop

Matt Mosley
 (10:45 AM)

'Skins are privately saying it's not going to happen. But I don't believe anything right now. Not even my wife. Kidding.

Kyle Boston

With talks at a stand still for Edwards, can you see the Giants getting Boldin or is the price tag to high in Reese's eyes?

Matt Mosley
 (10:46 AM)

Too high right now...But things can change. The trade could happen after the draft. What if the Cardinals suddenly lose a pass rusher in training camp. They may be willing to give up a lot more to land someone like Kiwi. And don't think Kiwi can't be had -- for the right price.

Jared, baltimore

Matt, love your staff dude, keep up the good work... whats this I hear about the skinz trading JC17 to the Jets now??? Obviously it'd be to grab Sanchez, but we'd pretty much have to throw him in the fire w/ somewhat of a suspect line. Smart or Dan Snyder-ish stupid???

Matt Mosley
 (10:48 AM)

I think you're hearing a lot of crazy stuff right now. But Campbell was indeed Joe Gibbs' guy. Dan Snyder's and Co. aren't sold on the guy. So yes, they're listening to offers. But they'd like to land at least a second-rounder for him. Most teams aren't willing to do that.

Mitch (Atlanta, GA)

Why has Shady McCoy slid so far in the mock drafts? At one time he was considered a top 3 RB in the draft.

Matt Mosley
 (10:49 AM)

It happens every year to someone. He's not considered to be as explosive as Moreno and Wells. I personally think he'll be a good back. But once a few teams sour on a kid, it can have a domino effect. Someone may end up with good value.

Karber (Amarillo, TX)

Jerry is keeping mum on the Cowboys' draft as usual. After being infuriated with his pick of Demarcus Ware, I now trust Jerry with our team's drafts, haha. So, what do you think he will do about WR in the draft?

Matt Mosley
 (10:51 AM)

Karber, I answer all questions from Amarillo. Have relatives there. Cowboys love Brian Robiskie. I think you have to move up to about No. 35 to get him. That means the Cows would have to work a trade with the Rams. You heard it hear first.

Irv (New York, NY)

Hey Matt, love hearing what u have to say more than that Kyper guy, lol. Im a die hard JETS fan and wonder if they can make a senario like this happen? Trade Thomas Jones and a second round pick to Arizona for Boldin, and trade a first and third to trade up and get Sanchez? Dont you think that would be smart? We have Leon Washigton, who i think is a Brian Westbrook type player waiting for his shot to be an every down back, and this move would solidify our two most important needs of the offseason without really mortgaging our future away. What do you think?

Matt Mosley
 (10:53 AM)

Thanks for the kind words. But no, I don't see any scenario like this playing out. I think the worst thing that could happen to Washington is becoming an "every down back." He's much more effective in spots. And I think the same thing goes for Jones.

Pete, Durham, NC

I think Michael Johnson from GA Tech is going to be a DE. I see him as a Kiwanuka type. Where do you see him going and can the Giants get him in Rd. 2?

Matt Mosley
 (10:55 AM)

They could get him, but I'd be hesitant. You have to be worried any time there's a huge talent like this slipping into possibly the early second round. I haven't done a ton of research, but there has to be something holding him back. On a positive note, I think he pretty much abused Eugene Monroe in a game last season. Oh NO! Our time here is growing short. Seifert is forcing me out. But at least I'm delivering a huge audience to him.

Bubba (Fort Collins Co)

If not Robiskie what reciever might be available to us at 51, would Harvin still be on the board for Dallas or would we be looking at other options?

Matt Mosley
 (10:56 AM)

I don't think Harvin will drop that far. And I don't think the Cowboys would take him if he did.

Zamir (Philly)

Hey Matt, if the Eagles get Boldin by trading a first and a third, do you think they then become the favorites to win in the NFC East, and possibly the whole NFL?

Matt Mosley
 (10:57 AM)

I don't think the Eagles will give up that much. And they just spent a ton of money on Peters. I think they've made their choice. Time to give up the ghost.

Rocky(Binghamton,NY)

I don't like any of the prospects outside of Orakpo/Maybin at number 11 for the bills. If neither is there I'd say trade down to maximize their draft picks. What do you think the bills can get for there #11 pick if sanchez is still available?

Matt Mosley
 (10:58 AM)

I'd get Vinny Cerrato on the phone and find out. The Redskins would simply swap picks with the Bills. But Buffalo's going to also ask for a premium pick in 2010 (see first-rounder). I know Snyder doesn't want to do it. But that might be the price.

Bob (Fairport, NY)

Have the Giants started negotiating with Pierce on a long term deal yet? If not, is the Giants interest in Laurenitis and Clay Matthews a sign he's asking for too much or they aren't willing to keep him?

Matt Mosley
 (10:59 AM)

I don't think they've had any serious talks, no. And yes, they have to start preparing for possible life without Pierce. That said, I think Reese would love to eventually get something down. He just doesn't feel compelled to do so right now.

Mike D, Philadelphia, PA

Alright last time. What do we do at 21 when Pettigrew and Moreno are gone. (Eagles) thanks, peace love dope.

Matt Mosley
 (11:00 AM)

That's it folks. Oh, I think the Eagles might try to trade out of the pick and take Mack a little later. That do anything for ya? Enjoy Kevin Seifert. I keep hearing good things about him.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:03 AM)

Yes, Matt, there are many good things to say about me. Let's dive into the NFC North.

Jordan S. Jackson, MI

Kevin, I really enjoy reading your blogs, but as I was reading through the bloggers mock draft and I notice that you have Detroit taking Knowshon Moreno at 20, I understand he's a great player but don't you think that's a reach, especially taking a running back in the first round when you have Kevin Smith and seeing as that Eben Britton was there for the taking at tackle? And that one of the USC linebackers was still there, I just can't remember which one.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:06 AM)

Ah, yes, let's tackle this one head on. I admit this wasn't the most obvious choice, nor did it make much sense. But what I tried to do was follow the kind of thinking the Lions claim they will be using in the draft. That is: Not allowing need to trump talent at any spot. I know there are other position the Lions have more need at. But when I looked at the players remaining on the board at No. 20, I thought Moreno was the best player. I don't know what the Lions' evaluation of him is, so I can't say they would do the same thing. But I do think that's the kind of thinking they'll apply to the draft, and it could make for some surprises.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:06 AM)

Plus, it's a mock draft. They're supposed to be fun. I appreciate the measured way you asked the question and ask everyone to take this mock draft, and every other one, with an appropriate grain of salt.

Robert (Huntsville, Al)

Can you name any successful QB's that entered the NFL after their Junior year of college? All I can think of is busts... Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, Alex Smith, Cade McNown, etc.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:07 AM)

Ben Roethlisberger is the recent exception to the rule. I think I'm right about that.

Jake (Syracuse)

Kevin, any relation to George?

Kevin Seifert
 (11:07 AM)

Nope. Too bad. He'd be a good source, I would think.

Elliot (Toronto, Ontario)

The last two drafts have proven that if the Vikings covet a player and the value is right then they won't hesitate to trade up (Sidney Rice, Tyrell Johnson, J.D. Booty). Being already without their 4th and 6th, can you see a situation where the Vikes will move up to get someone, even though it seems as though they want more picks?

Kevin Seifert
 (11:08 AM)

Good point, and the answer is yes. The Vikings believe their roster is built to the point where they don't need to fill in at every position. So if there is a player they have a high interest in, I think it's very possible they could trade up in the middle of the draft.

Matt: (Cleveland)

Kevin, if talent trumps need they should be drafting Crabtree at No. 1.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:08 AM)

Really? You think he's the best player in the draft?

Dennis Grube, FL

Kevin, through the whole process, everyone keeps talking about the first round and who the Lions will take with the 1st pick and even the 20th. My question is, who do they have targeted in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds?

Kevin Seifert
 (11:09 AM)

The reason no one is talking about the lower rounds is that it becomes exponentially more difficult to predict who will be available, and how each team rates the various players, as the rounds move on.

Jake Klipp (Milwaukee, WI)

If GB ends up with Raji or A.Smith I'm ecstatic. I'd be ok with Orakpo. I'd be ok with trading down for someone in love with Sanchez, if he falls. One of those 4 scenarios has to happen, right?

Kevin Seifert
 (11:10 AM)

I think that's definitely a top four. The other possibility is perhaps Maybin at No. 9 if the Packers have a high grade on him.

Shannon J. St. Paul, MN

Kevin, you have linked Andre Smith and the Packers quite a few times in the last month. What makes you so sure Ted Thompson hasn't ruled him out as a bad fit due to off the field issues. He has made a concerted effort to get players who would fit in to the community and want to stay.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:12 AM)

Agreed. I just think Smith might be the kind of player who would benefit from moving up north, away from his comfort zone, and just focus on football. I know it's a bit of a cliche, but it might be true in this case. I can't say for sure whether Thompson has ruled him out as a character guy, but most of the reports about Smith aren't particularly evil: Just that he isn't in very good shape and has had a hard time with the agent process.

Adam (Hermosa Beach, CA)

Hi Kevin, I'm not sold on any of this year's QB's being 'franchise quarterback' material... Personally, I think the best candidate comes out next year from Austin, TX in Colt McCoy. Do you think there are any teams that would be thinking similarly if considering the need for a QB over the next 2-4 years?

Kevin Seifert
 (11:13 AM)

Possibly, but the problem always is whether you'll be in position to take one of those players next year. If you're a team in the top 5 and have a chance to take Stafford or Sanchez, you're hoping you won't be back in the top 5 next year. So you can't plan on being in position to take Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford unless you're pretty sure you're going to have a bad year, which is a bad way to look at things.

Nirav (Chicago)

Kevin, really enjoy the blogs. In terms of immediate impact, do you think the Bears would be better served taking a Safety or WR with their 2nd round pick? I understand that it depends on who's available, but I think they have a better chance of drafting a starter if they go Safety with their first pick.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:14 AM)

Immediate impact? Safety without a doubt. Receivers can take several years to get acclimted. And you're probably going to have a chance to get one of the top safeties in the draft at No. 49. If you're locked into receiver, you're looking at perhaps the sixth-, seventh- or eighth-best guy. No comparison.

Corn (field)

Thats why the Lions DONT have to take Stafford this year - they WILL be picking top 5 next year no matter what.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:14 AM)

Well, I don't think they would be well-served to be planning on that. Put it that way.

Joe (Lafayette Hill, PA)

Why can't you do NFC East all day... alot more fun to hear NY fans thinking they are knowledgeable LOL. Anyways, why isn't Detroit going OL w/ their #1. Culpepper lost weight and swears he is in great form, you can't get a franchise QB w/out a decent line to protect him, and wouldn't you rather invest your money on your O&D lines if you are rebuilding anyways?

Kevin Seifert
 (11:17 AM)

Yes, I understand New Yorkers are scientifically proven to be smarter than Upper Midwesterners. You provide the argument that many do for drafting Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe. But the one flaw is you're projecting a lot for Culpepper. Remember, he hasn't been a consistently good starter since 2005. He might well be on track for a good season, but you don't want to assume it. And, you also have to realize that if Culpepper does play well, it won't be forever. Drafting a quarterback now puts him in the "pipeline" for development. The longer he is in that development stage, the better.

Robert (Huntsville, Al)

Andre Smith was lazy at Alabama, and I'm a fan. Shula cuddled him his freshman year and let him get away with everything. Saban continually ripped on him the next two years saying many times that if he actually tried he could be the best tackle ever. In college, talent alone can get you buy, but in the NFL, he is a bust...

Kevin Seifert
 (11:17 AM)

I also hear Saban is personally vouching for Smith now, and I doubt he would do that if he wasn't sincere about it. Regardless, those are the reasons Smith's stock has fallen.

Jason (Muskegon, MI)

If Detroit takes Stafford #1, he'll wind up the same as Harrington with no protection. Detroit should focus on filling the other holes with Culpepper locked for this year and a QB from a better draft class next year. At best, Detroit will be 3-13 when the smoke clears. The only immediate impact Stafford will have for the Lions is making sure the Gatorade is stocked and fresh!

Kevin Seifert
 (11:19 AM)

Everyone is assuming that Stafford is playing right away if he gets drafted. What about the idea of Culpepper starting in 2009 and perhaps 2010 as well? I know everyone expects immediate impact, but it's not out of the question that the Lions can do this the right way and give him the time he needs to learn and grow.

Jeff, Mpls

A lot of chatter in Minny about Harvin and the Vikes. Any idea what his positive drug test means to the Vikes at 22? Maybe Pat white in the second instead??

Kevin Seifert
 (11:21 AM)

There is definitely something very interesting going on here. Spielman has talked a lot about Harvin, so much so that I'm suspicious about his intent. I think he's up to something, but I don't know what. Is he trying to make people think he is interested in Harvin when in reality they have taken him off the board? And if so, does that mean that Pat White is their secret target? I don't know. Spielman has a press conference later Thursday. Let's see what he says.

Matt: (Cleveland)

Learn and grown? Not gonna happen. People will want Matt Ryan results in Detroit and Schwartz will need to try and produce them.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:22 AM)

Well, that would be a huge mistake. Ryan was much more NFL-ready than Stafford and everyone knows it.

Robert (Huntsville, Al)

Why take someone #1 and pay him that much money if he is going to sit on the bench? You might as well never pick if you are going to do that. If I'm drafting #1, I want someone that will play from day 1. That kind of thinking is the insanity of the draft. And that's why you don't draft junior QB's #1. They aren't experienced enough...

Kevin Seifert
 (11:23 AM)

Because finding an elite quarterback is the most important but most difficult personnel job in the NFL. If you think you've found one, it's worth the money. If you think he needs a year or two of seasoning, it's worth it. Drafting for immediate impact alone is not a path to long-term success.

KYLE (MILWAUKEE, WI)

DOES DENVER HAVE A SHOT AT GETTING BOTH RAJI AND JACKSON?

Kevin Seifert
 (11:24 AM)

I DON'T KNOW. BILL WILLIAMSON OF AFC WEST FAME WILL BE ON AT 2 P.M ET!!

Michael(Michigan)

There is a report on mlive.com that Stafford and his agent have until sometime Friday to accept the contract offer and if they do not accept then Curry already has a contract agreement any truth to this?

Kevin Seifert
 (11:25 AM)

I'm not aware of a specific deadline, but I do think it's accurate that there will be a point of no return when the Lions will either have a deal done with Stafford or they will move on to Curry.

CHRIS MICHIGAN

I DONT KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!

Kevin Seifert
 (11:25 AM)

I'm thinking of Planes, Trains and Automobiles: YOU'RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!! (How does he know which way we're going?)

Joe, Eugene

In the shoes of a GM how do you look past a player showing up to the combine with weed in their system? I mean a positive test in the middle of a players freshman year is easy to rationalize. But at the combine which is scheduled years in advance...

Kevin Seifert
 (11:27 AM)

I read a great quote in a Don Banks story on Si.com. The person said the drug test at the combine is more of an intelligence test than anything, OK, so some players smoke pot. That's pretty well-known. But to be dumb enough to not get it out of your system for the combine -- a decision that can cost millions of dollars -- sends up a lot of warning flags.

Mark - Boulder, CO

LOUD NOISES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kevin Seifert
 (11:28 AM)

What, are you Will Ferrell's mono-modulated character?

Patrick Oshkosh WI

Kevin, I can bet that Ted Thompson has had a conversation with Nick Saban. Don't you think taking Maybin at 9 is to high and are there any decent punters in this draft?

Kevin Seifert
 (11:29 AM)

Maybin might be high at nine, so I would say it's a fifth possibility behind the four that were previously mentioned. As for punters, I'm honestly not sure but usually at least one or two are drafted.

rigged (vegas)

are these questions chosen at random? why print "LOUD NOISES" jeez

Kevin Seifert
 (11:29 AM)

We're just lightening the mood, rigged.

Jay (Albany)

Will Ferrell never said "LOUD NOISES!" That was Steve Carell who masterfully played Brick Tamland, the weather reporter with an IQ of 48.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:29 AM)

Ah, yes, Darn. That escalated in a hurry.

George (Orlando)

Why can't Detroit take Jason Smith and then trade back up to say 10 using their 20 and #2 to get Sanchez?

Kevin Seifert
 (11:30 AM)

The amount of guaranteed money that move would take is incomprensible. Probably $70-$75 million in guarantees alone for those two players.

Kevin Seifert
 (11:31 AM)

Ok, I'm going to hand things off to Matt Williamson of Scouts, Inc. He's someone who actually knows what he's talking about. Thanks everyone!

Matt Williamson
 (11:32 AM)

Thanks Kevin. Let's keep this rolling along.

Aaron H. Cadillac, MI

I still think the Lions should try to get Peppers.

Matt Williamson
 (11:32 AM)

While that sounds great-the Lions need everything. They are still SO far away. Plus, do you trust Peppers to come in and be a team leader on an awful football team? That would worry me.

Darryl (Oakland, CA)

Why is left tackle so much more valuable than center? Alex Mack is the best collegiate center I've ever seen and most projections now have him going in the 2nd round. I don't understand this because I'm sure he'll have a major impact in the running game of his next stop. Do you believe the center position is ultimately underrated?

Matt Williamson
 (11:35 AM)

In some ways-very much so. However, there are only 32 starting centers on the planet. Most teams have someone who they like or are comfortable with. So, lets just say that there are five teams out there who would be interested in upgrading at center. Seems like a logical number. Of those teams, which of them have MUCH bigger needs? For example, the Bengals really could use a new pivot, but their OT situation is in disarray and they can't rush the passer. The center has two big bodies on each side of him to aid him play to play. The OT usually does not and is somewhat of an island player. Plus, if you can't make it at LT, you can usually move to RT or OG. If you are a center and can't make it, you usually sit on the sidelines and don't get your jerssey dirty on game day.

Jarrod(Michigan)

Based on your knowledge of Aaron Curry, could he transition to MLB for the Lions if they go that route?

Matt Williamson
 (11:36 AM)

I think Curry is an exceptional player. However, if I am using the first pick overall on a position that is easy to fill (like linebacker), then I am not going to ask that prospect to play a new position. The guy is a terrific OLB for the 4-3 and yes, he very well could be a very effective MLB for that scheme or even an ILB or OLB in the 3-4, but it isn't the ideal fit.

Larry(Chicago il)

isn;t it possible that crabtree could fall in the draft do to his injury?

Matt Williamson
 (11:37 AM)

Of course. Personally, I think he is the best player in this draft, so "Falling" out of the top few picks seems like excellent value to me.

Garrett (Portland, ME)

What direction do you think San Diego will go in the draft? Is there a chance Maualuga will be there at the 16th pick?

Matt Williamson
 (11:38 AM)

He could be and would be very difficult to pass on. Ideally, I think SD would want one of the top 4 OTs or T Jackson, as both lines need help. I doubt any of those five will be available however.

Jonathan (Texas)

will the browns deal edwards and get crabtree with the 5th pick?

Matt Williamson
 (11:39 AM)

That would be my plan, but Mangini is a D-Minded HC and Kokinas comes from Baltimore, where their success was based on the D side of the ball.

Joe Nashville,TN

Do the Titans go CB? and if so whao? I know they are real thin there.

Matt Williamson
 (11:40 AM)

They are very thin and surely would not pass on D Butler. Could maybe get V Davis as well. I see Tenn as having a lot of options. WR is still a huge need and they need at least one more DLineman as well. A lot of directions they could go, but CB is as good of a bet as any.

Jesse (Omaha, NE)

San Diego needs to think about a replacement for L.T., maybe Moreno?

Matt Williamson
 (11:41 AM)

They do, but right now, they have a LOT of $$$ tied up in that position. I would ignore RB at the top of this draft. Deal with it next year. If need-be, bring in a first round rookie RB a year from now. But, SD is a contender, they need to find someone who is going to get on the field.

Jesse (Omaha, NE)

What's a guy gotta do to get his comment posted?

Matt Williamson
 (11:42 AM)

There you have it bro....kind of a busy room!

Dawit Mehreteab

do you think its a good fit for hakeem nicks to play for the panthers

Matt Williamson
 (11:43 AM)

I do. Would complement S Smith very well and could be exactly what the doctor ordered. However, Car doesn't have a first round pick and have big DL needs as well. This is a team that looks worse to me than when the season ended.

Mark - Boulder, CO

Percentage chance that the Lions trade for a QB rather than drafting one???

Matt Williamson
 (11:43 AM)

I think Stafford is all but locked up at this point.

Brandon (Bellevue, WA)

Smoke screens abound but do you see any fire surrounding the recent chatter concerning the Redskins trade for Seattle's 4th and then moving Cambell to a team like the Vikings, the Jets, or the Bucs?

Matt Williamson
 (11:44 AM)

That makes a lot of sense to me actually. If I were NYJ, I would be very interested in Campbell at a somewhat reduced rate. Same with the Vikes for sure. Moving up to #4 is surely a Skins kinda thing to do. Just ignore those line issues and go get a big name!

Dan Chinchar: Florida

Do you believe the Eagles will trade up and draft Moreno, or trade out of the first and go with Donald Brown?

Matt Williamson
 (11:46 AM)

I really can't see moving up for Moreno. Nice player. Not special. Easy position to fill. In fact, I might actually like D Brown just a smidge better. Very close though. They had a lot of picks pre-trade for Peters, but still are in good shape from that standpoint-so they could move in either direction, but trading down for Brown is certainly more Reid's style.

Jason Connecticut

Hey Matt ! Some experts have Oakland taking Maclin over Crabtree. So if crabtree is still there, why would they take Maclin over the best WR prospect? Thanks !

Matt Williamson
 (11:46 AM)

Well, first off-because they are the Raiders. Al Davis covets 40 times. Crabtree doesn't have one.

randy savage, nyc

Can denver take T.Jackson and either Brown or Ayers at 18? Then go for brace in rd 2.

Matt Williamson
 (11:48 AM)

Macho Man? Where is Elizabeth? T Jackson would be a great first pick for Denver. I give him about a 75% chance of being there. They should pounce. I don't love Ayers at all-esp for a 3-4, but they might get a suitable edge rusher with that second first rounder. I would say 50/50 that Brace is still around in round 2. Not a bad scenerio overall though. Just think-how many starters does Denver need in JUST their front seven? At least four-probably five.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub at some point the Cards are expected to draft a RB, if they do does that spell the end for Edge? And what are the chances that he'll be picked up or could he be traded?

Matt Williamson
 (11:49 AM)

He really can't have any trade value at this point. I would expect him to end up in with a team though-maybe even Indy at a very reduced rate. But yes, the Cards VERY much need a RB.

Dave (Colorado Springs)

If Stafford is the #1 pick, who do they take at #20?

Matt Williamson
 (11:49 AM)

Well, they will still need OT, OG, TE, WR, DT, DE, MLB and at least one more guy for the secondary.

jared (texas)

how would percy harvin fit in with the texans

Matt Williamson
 (11:51 AM)

Have mentioned that before myself. Could really be quite a weapon in that O! I see Hous as being in real good shape, as they should not force themselves to take a position (like Cushing). Instead in round one, grab a luxory item like Harvin, Heyward-Bey, Jerry or Maybin.

Andy Reid (Philly)

I'm starving - what should I have for lunch? And do you think Pettigrew is the guy that I should take in the first round?

Matt Williamson
 (11:51 AM)

I like Pettigrew there and a RB in round 2

jerry nc [via mobile]

Can chiefs get first rd for gonzalez

Matt Williamson
 (11:52 AM)

No, but if I were ATL, I would give them my #2

Bruce (Olrlando)

Do you see Everette Brown falling to the Falcons at 24? If so do you think he would be a good fit opposite of J. Abraham?

Matt Williamson
 (11:52 AM)

Wouldn't be a bad fit at all. Shocked if he lasts that long.

Shawn, Tampa Bay

I hope the Bucs go defense this draft unless someone drops to 19, but since we dont have a 2nd round who do you think is a safe pick at 19?

Matt Williamson
 (11:53 AM)

P Jerry makes sense. E Brown. Maybin. Would really lean towards DL in general.

Jamal Anderson (Atlanta, GA)

So, uh, everyone has given up on me?

Matt Williamson
 (11:54 AM)

Sorta. Need to add competition at least. Plus, a dynamic edge rusher would work out well and allow you to move inside on throwing downs. A guy like E Brown isn't going to come into the league and play every snap.

Kevin (Notre Dame, IN)

Do the Bengals reach for an OT even if Smith and Monroe are off the board?

Matt Williamson
 (11:55 AM)

I don't really like where Cincy sits in terms of addressing their needs, but I have A Smith pencilled in at their spot. Would say it is either Smith or Orakpo.

Phillip (the A-T-L)

I think the Falcons have one player they want at #24-Brandon Pettigrew. If he's gone, I think GM Thomas Dimitroff, trades down and goes defense. What do you think Falcons will do?

Matt Williamson
 (11:56 AM)

Pettigrew there makes a ton of sense. If he gets picked before that, call the Cheifs up and go get Tony G. I also see ATL as having a lot of needs still though. DT, DE, one more LB and I don't trust their secondary or OL overall.

Ian-FL

Should the Raiders go WR in the first or should the concentrate on OL or DL.

Matt Williamson
 (11:56 AM)

The wild card for them would be Raji-who I really like as a player. If they went with him, I would have no problem with it at all. Otherwise, I would want Crabtree-they probably will not as I mentioned earlier. A Smith sure seems like their type of guy as well.

ronnie (connecticut)

is there a good chance that the 49ers will get mark sanchez and do u see the 49ers being a playoff team this year?

Matt Williamson
 (11:58 AM)

Right now, I see AZ and SEA as better teams than SF. SEA vs. SF is close though and I do have faith in Singletary to change the culture. I bet Sanchez is gone by that pick, but SF would be crazy to pass on him if he is there. Other guys to consider: A Smith, Oher, Jenkins, Orakpo, Maclin.

Cosmo (Anytown, USA)

How do you plan on spending Saturday and Sunday? I see a stack of take out menus, a comfy chair and a cooler of adult beverages (or maybe that's just me).

Matt Williamson
 (11:59 AM)

Sounds swell-no question about that. On the air this weekend for 20+ hours on ESPN 1250 here in Pittsburgh. Tune in.

abe lincoln (florida)

no one cares

Matt Williamson
 (11:59 AM)

That might be true as well.

Mark Sweetman:New Castle Delaware

Do you think the Chiefs will really give up Tony?

Matt Williamson
 (12:00 PM)

KC could possibly move Gonzo, LJ, Waters, Dorsey and D Johnson. The D guys don't fit the new scheme at all and the O guys are oldish. Will be interesting.

Matt Williamson
 (12:00 PM)

Well folks, my time here is done. I will be chatting again tomorrow from 4 to 5. Mike, take it away.

Jeff (Washington, DC)

Mike, are the Titans showing any interest in WR Boldin? If they intend to improve the position through the draft, then why not trade for a proven one? They have 10 draft picks. Do they have enough ammo to interest the Cardinals?

Mike Sando
 (12:04 PM)

The Titans are picking 30th. That might be a little low. Also, knowing Mike Reinfeldt, I'm questioning whether he would want to give up picks for a player, then meet that player's very high demands on a long-term agreement.

Os (Jersey)

Sando! is Oher the safe pick for the 49ers?

Mike Sando
 (12:07 PM)

The position is a relatively safe position. The questions teams have about Oher -- his ability to learn protections, etc. -- raise the risk somewhat.

Doug (LA)

Mike, I was hearing some rumors - what are the odds that the Rams, draft Sanchez only to facilitate a trade to another team (ie. Washington, Denver, Jets) for more picks?

Mike Sando
 (12:09 PM)

It's amazing to me how much Mark Sanchez chatter there has been in the couple weeks leading up to the draft. I think there's a lot of smoke. The risk in drafting a player for the purposes of trading the player comes in whether or not you can actually get the desired value in return. If you cannot, then you're stuck with a player you already tried to trade.

Joe Kelly (Oroville, Wa)

How come noone seems to think that it is possible for the Chiefs to draft WR Crabtree? Curry doesn't really fit their defensive scheme. I think that drafting Crabtree makes perfect sense for the chiefs. It gives Cassel the best offensive weapon in the draft. Adds a Wes Welker type receiver and opens up the coverage for Bowe. It would create a system similar to what Haley had last year in Arizona and give the running game a chance to be effetive.

Mike Sando
 (12:10 PM)

I think you raise a very fair question. Todd Haley certainly benefited in Arizona from the team's decision to take Larry FItzgerald third overall. At the same time, receiver is a riskier selection. Given the money involved, the perception might be that Scott Pioli would not want to go that route.

Larry Cincinnati,Oh [via mobile]

If Crabtree and Curry and Smith are all still available when the Bengals pick which one do u think makes the most sense?

Mike Sando
 (12:11 PM)

Are you talking about Andre Smith or Jason Smith? I've heard they like Andre Smith.

Drew (Seattle)

If Crabtree, Sanchez, and Monroe are still on the board for the Seahawks, who do you THINK the Seahawks will choose?

Mike Sando
 (12:12 PM)

Crabtree would be my guess despite the fact that he probably would not qualify as the safest choice.

Aaron (K.C.)

Piolli took on Moss's monster contract with a bunch of ???????????????

Mike Sando
 (12:13 PM)

The Patriots had Tom Brady and established leaders thoughout their roster, plus an established head coach. Different situation entirely. And the cost was a fourth-round choice.

Will (Cincinnati, Ohio)

Being born in St. Louis and growing up a rams fan watching the greatest show on turf, I've been pretty disappointed the past few years. This year I'm hoping the rams address and fill their needs in the draft. I keep hearing from the rams that they like monroe the best but kiper and mcshay seem to think that j smith is the clear cut best OT. What are the chances of them drafting monroe over smith at number 2? Also the seven round mock that recently went up has them drafting three recievers and a running back in rounds 3-6. Are three recievers really necessary when we could use help at db and additional OL spots?

Mike Sando
 (12:15 PM)

I suspect the seven-round mock took a less global view and might have produced a couple of unlikely scenarios as a result, notably the Jets using all six picks for offense. On the Rams, I've heard rumblings both ways. The early word was that Monroe was preferred. Then came word Smith was preferred. Or was it the other way around? My gut says Monroe but that's all it is.

Ryan (menasah, WI)

I have a feeling that GB is going to trade their pick, because that is what Ted Thompson does. What kind of value can they get for the 9th pick? Also, what players are going to be in the late first round that will fit in a 3 - 4 scheme?

Mike Sando
 (12:17 PM)

Some of that could depend on what the Jaguars do at 8. Let's say Sanchez is on the board at that point and the Redskins trade into the 8th pick. If that happens, the ninth pick probably becomes less valuable. That could be one variable. On the other hand, the Redskins and Packers do have strong ties given that Jim Zorn and a couple of his coaches were with Ted Thompson in Seattle. Sometimes those relationships help facilitate trades.

David (dallas, tx)

I'm going to pout all freakin' day if I don't get an experts opinion on Ramses Barden. Rams. 3rd round. Go.

Mike Sando
 (12:19 PM)

Seems to me the Rams need to find a starting receiver in this draft, possibly earlier than the third round. Is Barden more of a project than that? Would you feel good about Donnie Avery, Laurent Robinson, Keenan Burton and Barden?

Jim Everett ( LA, California)

Is Marc Bulger going to turn into me? And please don't call me Chris!

Mike Sando
 (12:20 PM)

The Rams would probably be happy if they found a quarterback who helped them reach the playoffs three times on his way to amassing nearly 35,000 yards passing. I'm playing devil's advocate with you here, but Everett did put up some numbers.

Will (Cincinnati, Ohio)

Also, with the rams releasing the best wide receiver to ever play for them why don't they go after either harrison or buress? Regardless of character issues the rams despertly need improvement.

Mike Sando
 (12:22 PM)

The Rams are starting fresh. Marvin Harrison is an aging player with a bum knee and I'm not sure he would even want to play for a rebuilding team. Plaxico Burress' off-field troubles make him an unlikely candidate for the Rams given what the new regime is trying to establish in St. Louis.

Heller (Long Beach)

HEY MATT!! Do you think the Cards would deal Boldin to the Eagles for pick #21, Reggie Brown, and maybe a day-2 pick? Since the Cards have Fitz and Breaston, Brown could be a pretty nice slot guy and #21 would allow AZ to have a stab at Moreno.

Mike Sando
 (12:23 PM)

I'll try to get Matt for you. In the meantime, I'm not convinced the Eagles are serious about going after Boldin. Some of their fans would surely like to see the team make an aggressive move, but Philly already invested quite a bit in a left tackle.

Mark in Boston

Hi Sando, I love everything you write about as i have agreed with you on nearly all aspects of the NFC West in the past. I am a transplant from AZ, but am a true Pats fan born and raised, but i am curious about your recent Mock Draft Blog with the others from yesterday. I gave you credit in stating that your picks were the only ones that were nearly dead on for talent and needs at the pick available, but my question is... Why did you decide to choose Monroe over J. Smith at the #2 pick?...and i just want you to know that i'm not just a Kiper-a-holic and following everything they say. Do you have inside info on Monroe that isn't out to the public? Because in my mind and on tape, i saw much more skill and upside in Smith... Thanks Sando, I'm still a fan..

Mike Sando
 (12:26 PM)

If you think flattery is going to help you get a question answered, well, you're right. Haha. I wanted to use this opportunity to say that I spend all my time covering the NFC West teams. I do not study the college prospects. I cannot give you an air-tight reason why I sent Monroe to the Rams at No. 2 instead of Jason Smith. I thought Monroe might appear to be the more polished candidate from a more established program, and possibly more appealing as a result.

Heller (Long BEach)

HEY SANDO!!

Mike Sando
 (12:27 PM)

How early is the Day 2 pick? The third round is now Day 2. If the Cards could get a first and third, that would be pretty strong, I think. But I doubt the Eagles would do that.

Aaron MN [via mobile]

Hey mike with the defensive minded coach the rams have is it possible they will take curry and build the line in later rounds?

Mike Sando
 (12:28 PM)

Yes, that is certainly possible. That would be defensible. I think Curry would give the Rams another young leader on defense to go with a few others who might emerge if they start realizing their potential (true leaders are generally good players). The question really becomes whether the Rams can get starters after the first round; in other words, do their needs make drafting Curry second overall a luxury? I think they need a starting OL and starting WR from this draft.

Greg Cleveland,OH

I know that the Browns and Giants arn't seeing eye to eye with the Edwards trade. What are the chances something will get done on draft day?

Mike Sando
 (12:31 PM)

Better, I would think. That's the moment of truth. If the teams are serious, that's when they need to get something done.

Matt (Hershey)

Mike, how much does Edge have left in the tank and will there be a team interested in his services besides the Colts?

Mike Sando
 (12:32 PM)

The Patriots have certainly shown a willingness to sign older running backs. I think James has something left to offer as a situational player. He blocks well enough. He catches the ball well enough. His future could hinge on his own expectations. If he wants to be an every-down back, I'm not sure about the market.

Dan and Vinny (Bubble bath)

We have more money than god. Ahhhh, fbask in our glory. We are thinking of trading those funny little pieces of paper, draft picks i think they call them, for that money pit in Carolina, Peppers. Not that your thoughts matter, but what do you think?

Mike Sando
 (12:33 PM)

I think that's a pretty funny visual, but also a fleeting one, hopefully.

westin from LA

hey mike kansas city who only had 10 sacks last year i think have a pretty decent linebacking core but not a great defensive line do you beleive that Aaron Maybin is a better fit for the Chiefs than Curry?

Mike Sando
 (12:35 PM)

It's all about the value and WHERE you feel comfortable taking certain players. The Chiefs' defense is a tough one to figure because Clancy Pendergast is not a career 3-4 guy, and their personnel is less than ideal. I'm not sure how the Chiefs plan to marry scheme to personnel.

Sergio California

Will the Niners have a good shot at drafting Michael Crabtree?

Mike Sando
 (12:37 PM)

I do not think Crabtree will be available that late. If he were to be available, the 49ers might pull a hamstring rushing to make that pick, I would think.

Chris (Chicago)

In the first round of the 2008 draft, the offensive tackle position seemed to dictate much of the round's movement. Is there any position in the 2009 draft that might see teams hurrying to trade into spots where they might draft the last elite player before a huge drop-off in talent?

Mike Sando
 (12:39 PM)

It would have to be quarterback. You figure Matthew Stafford goes to the Lions, most likely. Then you have a perceived gap between Mark Sanchez and Josh Freeman, followed by another perceived gap to the next tier of quarterbacks. Then you throw in the fact that QB-needy teams are selecting outside the top 10. I think it makes things interesting, for sure.

Nick (New York)

How much do you think losing the coordinators are going to hurt the Cards? Do see them taking a step back even with a strong draft?

Mike Sando
 (12:41 PM)

I saw the Cardinals trying to evolve on both sides of the ball, anyway. The defense probably will not be worse over the course of the season. Only four teams allowed more points than the Cardinals last season. All four fired their head coaches. The offense will be looking for more balance. It might be less prolific this year with an eye toward becoming more efficient and reliable. The important thing, expectations-wise, is to remember that the Cardinals will not necessarily play all season the way they did in the playoffs last season. That was a special run.

john wenatchee, WAf

Is it true that if stafford falls to #4 pick Seattle will take him without hesitating? this is kind of a disappointment if true, matt has got a few years left at least and i just think people have given up on him.

Mike Sando
 (12:43 PM)

I can't answer that with certainty, but I do think Seattle would strongly consider Stafford under those circumstances. Again, Tim Ruskell might be the only person who knows for sure at this point.

Dan Taylor

I'm a huge Niners fan. Who do you think they'll pick up and why?

Mike Sando
 (12:44 PM)

I would expect the 49ers to watch for falling prospects. Does one of the top four tackles make it to 10? How about one of the top two receivers? What about the top pass rusher? I see the 49ers reading and reacting here, not going into the draft bound and determined to find a certain player.

Jay (Louisville)

Sando, I haven't heard much talk about the Hawks taking a RB in the top 2 rounds. Considering the OC and head coach, and their current roster, do you think they would consider taking a playmaker at RB early?

Mike Sando
 (12:48 PM)

I have thought they would consider taking a back that early. The question in the back of my mind is whether the team values RBs any less since changing its blocking schemes. In the end, I do think Seattle will consider that position as early as the second or third round.

Colin (Seattle, WA)

Sando. I was a HUGE fan of your Seahawks coverage for the Tacoma News Tribune. If the Seahawks are able to trade down (with perhaps the Broncos or Skins) what players would they target and how would this move change their draft philosophy for 2009?

Mike Sando
 (12:50 PM)

Thanks, Colin. I don't think the Seahawks will be able to trade back that far, most likely. If they did, they could then feel better, perhaps, about taking just about anything: a pass rusher or tackle or Jeremy Maclin, etc.

Andre (Toronto)

Cards at #31, if both Donald Brown and Larry English are available, who is the pick?

Mike Sando
 (12:51 PM)

If you had them both rated similarly, I would favor the running back because I think the Cards could use a starter and RB is the more important position.

Chris Browns Mills, NJ

If teams in the top 10 want to trade down because they dont want to pay players isnt it logical to think a team might be able to move up without giving up to much?

Mike Sando
 (12:53 PM)

Yes, that is logical, but I think teams feel political pressure not to give away picks at the top.

Nick (SF)

Mike, do you see a big drop off from the big 4 OT's to the next 10 or so? Niners obviously need one but I'm hoping they can manage to trade down and snag Jenkins, steal Harvin in the 2nd (stretch), and then look at tackles starting in the third (should have 2 thirds by trading down).

Mike Sando
 (12:55 PM)

I think there's a strong case to be made for the 49ers trying to take a tackle later than No. 10. Their current starter on the left side was the 28th pick in 2007. Drafting a right tackle 10th doesn't make a great deal of sense, relatively. I think the 49ers could justify following your advice.

Marlow(Knoxville)

Does it not make more sense for the Lions to take Smith from Baylor because to me it Stafford is more of a risk. plus maybe they can get Freeman middle of the round with their second pick.

Mike (NC)

Pat, The Bucs are in need of outside pass rushers and have pick #19. It seems to me everyone has forgotten about Michael Johnson and George Selvie. They are the what outside speed rushers are molded after. wouldn't it be wise for the Bucs to trade back and look at possibly getting one or both since they have seem to have dropped off the radar?

Mike Sando
 (12:57 PM)

On the other hand, what is the reward if Jason Smith meets expectations? I don't hear people saying he's the next Orlando Pace or Walter Jones. Scouts seem to think he's a good prospect. If you take him and he pans out, is he an occasional Pro Bowl choice? If so, how much does that change things for your franchise? If, on the other hand, Stafford realizes his potential, wow, the Lions are scoring enough points (in theory) to contend for the division a year or two from now.

Mike Sando
 (12:58 PM)

I'm told Pat Yasinskas is in the building. I was wondering why that stretch limo was idling outside. Pat, take it away.

Pat Yasinskas
 (12:58 PM)

Selvie's not in this year's draft. He's staying at USF. But Johnson could be a possibility if they traded down to bottom of first or early second. Thanks to Mike Sando. Let's switch it over to the NFC South now.

#329 Jerry (W-S, NC)

Pat.......PAT WHITE...with all the recent private workouts (Pats, eagles, Broncos, Vikings, Browns, etc.) If you were to put money down on it....Who drafts him and how soon does he come off the board?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:00 PM)

Do not rule out Carolina on this one. Maybe third round or so.

Tom (NOLA)

Pat, what was with the beanie wells push a few weeks back?? Whats changed since?? PT/Bush STILL aved 4.3 ypc last year, on the #1 offense. They could maybe use a powerback..but help the DEF!! What changed since then, as most experts are now going back and saying we need defense?? hype?? following the flow?? thanks pat!

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:01 PM)

Hype, smoke screens, all of the above. Personally, I think the Saints go with D. They can get power back elsewhere.

Kevin (San Antonio, TX)

Is Tampa Bay really a threat to draft Freeman if he falls to them in the first round? Even after they just signed another QB?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:02 PM)

I thought once they signed Leftwich they were done at QB. But I source told me yesterday Freeman is still a possibility. Not saying it will happen, but it's not off the board like I thought.

Tym (Orlando, FL)

Pat, love the blog. I'm filling in for the receptionist at my office today, so it's basically a free day. Glad I could join you on the chat finally. Bucs are stacked at TE, and I'm nervous about where Alex Smith fits in the group. I like the guy, but is it safe to say he's trade material going into this weekend's draft?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:03 PM)

Yeah, he could be thrown into a package. Not sure that Smith alone will fetch much in return. But he could be a starter for some teams and Bucs have an overload at TE.

Josh (Charlotte)

What is your opinion on whether or not Peppers gets traded this weekend? What are the Panthers wanting if they do trade him? 1st/3rd?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:04 PM)

I still say there will be a trade. If they can get a 1 and a 3, I'd jump on it.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Pat: What's your take on the three WRs from Penn State? Are we looking at 4th round or later on all three?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:04 PM)

Looks that way. I like Deon Butler as one of the draft's biggest sleepers.

Chuck ( New Orleans)

With the Saints needing help on defense, why do most experts have them drafting Wells who would not be an immediate upgrade over Pierre Thomas

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:05 PM)

I've got them going defense -- Malcolm Jenkins, the DB from Ohio State.

Jordan, Lancaster PA

Who do you think could be a possible second day steal in this years draft?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:05 PM)

Deon Butler, WR, PSU.

Nick (SLC)

Where do you see Sean Smith/CB/Utah going in the draft? I think he can be a legit #1 CB on a team. His size alone gives him an ultimate advantage.

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:06 PM)

2nd round. Carolina would be a nice fit.

Andrew (Atlanta)

i refuse to believe that Dimitroff will take Pettigrew with our first pick i think we have too many needs on defense to spend a first round pick on a TE. If a defensive player of good value isnt there do you see us trading out of the first round and addressing TE and D in the second?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:07 PM)

I agree with you. I can't see them drafting TE first round. Drop down to late first or early second and still draft D. Get a TE a bit later.

Terrance, Lexington KY

Are there any crossover athletes that are Antonio Gates-type players who excelled in other sports in this year's draft?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:08 PM)

Know there's a basketball player from Cleveland State. Don't have his name handy right now.

Andrew (Mobile, AL)

Who do you think the Saints will take with their first draft pick and what kind of impact will he make?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:09 PM)

Malcolm Jenkins.

Phillip (the A-T-L):

I cannot see Thomas Dimitroff(Falcons GM) giving up a 2nd round pick for Tony Gonzalez - I know he's great but Gonzo is 33yrs old and he probably only has 1 or 2 years before decline. Dimitroff is building for long run and I think its too soon to start giving up high draft picks for vets. what say you?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:10 PM)

I don't believe the Gonzalez rumors (about Atlanta) at all.

Ken (Little Rock)

does Tampa need to draft another LB or are there good there after signing Crowell

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:10 PM)

Not first round anyway. Bigger needs at DT, CB and DE.

john Houston

If i write about the saints will you answer questions then?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:11 PM)

Yes, I cover the NFC South and we're trying to keep it to that this hour.

Ryan (Napa)

Alright, the best NFL chat of the bunch. Pat your chats are the best every week. Do you see any of the 4 teams trading up to get a higher pick? Better yet, is there anyone on the board that is a must have for an NFC South team that would cause them to trade up?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:11 PM)

Carolina is only team in NFC South I can see trading up -- but that would involve trading Peppers.

Paul (Augusta)

Is Delmas the Paolomolu type that Dimitroff so badly wants?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:12 PM)

Not sure if he's at that level. But I'd take him if the situation is right.

Duke (Kansas City)

Didn't the Chiefs already turn down the Falcons 2nd for Gonzales?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:13 PM)

I don't think that's true.

Same (Charlotte)

Do you think its a good idea for Carolina to draft Pat White in the second round with the possibility of lining him up at WR early on and later making him the post-Jake QB? Will White be available at pick #59 overall?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:14 PM)

Think he'll be available. Not sure they take him there. Maybe a round later.

Eric (Catasauqua, PA)

Which is more likely for Carlina at 59, DT or DE?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:15 PM)

Think need is greater at DE.

xSICKxWITHxITx

Are the falcons looking at adding a DT like Ron Brace or do they think Lewis will be ready?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:16 PM)

Like Brace a lot. Think he'd bee good fit for Falcons or Bucs.

The Pope (NOLA)

Is Malcom Jenkins better than me? Or is he just another Alex Molden? Does this kid have chops or should the Saints trade down for that Davis kid?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:16 PM)

Everything I hear about his heart/intensity, etc. is very good.

Paul (Augusta)

Does jamaal anderson have any trade value on draft day and why are the falcons holding on to him?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:17 PM)

No value. Why would anyone trade for him? Falcons will give him another shot in training camp.

Stylez G. White (Tampa, FL

Pat, why am I hearing all this talk about the Bucs drafting a DE in the first round?! I thought I was starting opposite to Gaines Adams!!!

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:18 PM)

Because you might be starting opposite Everette Brown or Michael Johnson.

Peria Jerry (Ole Miss)

Does tampa have no other choice but to take me with the first round pick

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:19 PM)

Not sure you fit the Jim Bates style. Could definitely see you with the Falcons. Maybe even the Saints.

K.C. Lynchburg, VA

What are your thoughts on Rashad Jennings, and where might he go?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:19 PM)

Would love to see the Saints pick up a third-round pick and use it on Jennings.

Drew (St. Pete, FL)

Are the Bucs looking to trade down?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:20 PM)

Every team is looking to trade down. It won't really happen until during the draft.

xSICKxWITHxITx

Is Thomas Decoud not ready to start, why so much talk about drafting another Safety?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:21 PM)

You see anyting from Decoud last year that strongly suggests he's ready to start?

James (New Orleans)

Why no talk about my boy James Lauranitis? He would have been a top 10 pick last year, now he's in the second round? Wouldn't he be a good pick for the Saints if they can trade down?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:22 PM)

Yes, if they trade down.

Jameson (College Park, MD)

Pat, what do you think about the Bucs trading down and taking Jarron Gilbert in the second round?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:23 PM)

Gilbert would be a good fit. Could also see him as a second-round target for Carolina.

Stan (Atlanta)

If the names on the board at 24 are Matthews, Pettigrew, Hood, Delmas, and Sintim, which would you take?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:23 PM)

Either Hood or Delmas.

Eric (Catasauqua, PA)

Is Lawrence Sidbury a reach for the Panthers in round 2?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:24 PM)

Not a reach at all. Give my regards to Catasauqua. They had a very good high school baseball team there in 1982.

Brian Cushing (CA)

If Malcolm Jenkins is taken before 14, and the saints cant trade back, am I the favorite to land there? Peria jerry and stylez G. White got there questions answered...help me out!?!?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:25 PM)

Yeah, I'd take either you or Peria Jerry in that scenario.

Vance (greensboro)

What are the chances Peppers goes to New England for that second rounder (and 3rd+?) and the #2 DE on the roster.

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:26 PM)

Think Panthers are really holding out for a No. 1 from somebody.

Tym (Orlando, FL)

If the bucs go DE in the first round, who do you see as the opening day starting DEs?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:26 PM)

First-round guy and Adams. Adams might not last long, but he'll get the first shot.

Tomwit NJ [via mobile]

I will skip the obligatory butt kiss and ask the BIG question. Who will be left when the Panthers get to pick thru the leftovers with pick 59? Pray for Fridge!

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:27 PM)

Paul Kruger or Sean Smith.

Ben H (Atlanta, GA)

Could we see the Panthers trade Peppers to ATL for their first round pick and possibly Jamal Anderson?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:28 PM)

Doubt it. Don't think Panthers want him in division.

Jake (ATL)

The Falcons need DT, DE, LB, safety, and corner. Don't you think they should take the best defensive player on the board with their first pick?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:28 PM)

Absolutely. TE can be adressed later.

Cory (Dallas)

What is going on with the Saints/Lance Moore? Do you think the Saints came out with the "surgery" story to keep Moore on the roster because they know they are going to be able to trade down and acquire a 2nd or 3rd round pick?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:29 PM)

No, I don't think Saints were faking surgery.

Akeez (NOLA)

Can a back that could compliment Reggie Bush (Like Beanie Wells) slip into that number 14 spot?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:30 PM)

Could be there, definitely. But I say Saints should go with defense.

Jeff Tampa

How far is Everette Brown really slipping? Will he make it to 19?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:30 PM)

Looking more and more like that's possible.

matt (pa)

you say adams might not last in tampa why?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:31 PM)

He hasn't exactly been lighting it up his first two years. Could it change? Yes, but you can't be sure of that.

Nolan(Philadelphia)

Peppers and Carolina's 2nd round pick for Boldin and Arizona's first round pick? Any possibility of that actually happening?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:31 PM)

I don't see Boldin ending up in Carolina.

Justin (Florida)

Can we all stop beating the dead horse that is the first round? This is a draft chat and there is more than one round, so....let's do some actual "work" and tell me who you see the Bucs getting in the 3rd and 4th or later rounds? Any surprise upgrades to the defense?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:32 PM)

You tell me what they do in the first. Then, I could look ahead to later rounds.

Cory ( Dallas)

I wasnt suggesting that the Saints made up the story about Moore. I was asking if they made it public in order to scare off teams and to keep him...

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:33 PM)

No, I think word got out about it. I don't think they put it out there.

Ted Thompson (GB, WI)

Do you think maybe I will trade my #9 pick for Julius Peppers?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:34 PM)

If you were willing to do that, Panthers would jump on it.

Tomás (Athens, GA)

In regards to the Falcons drafting a tight end late, which round do you see them making that pick and who do you think could be there? Also who has the final say on the Falcon's draft choice? Is it all Thomas Dimitroff or do him and Mike Smith work hand in hand?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:35 PM)

Maybe Chase Coffman in the third. Dimitroff has final say, but Smith has lots of input.

andrew (Greenville NC)

peppers is going to the bucs

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:36 PM)

Not a chance.

Jonny (Buffalo, NY

Any chance of NO looking at an OT if one falls to avoid a big Jammal Brown payday?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:36 PM)

No, think they've got to go defense.

Matt (Wilkesboro, NC)

Pat, Denver is switching to a 3-4, Peppers wants to play in a 3-4, wouldnt they be a great trade partner, since they have 2 first rounders and 2 third rounders?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:37 PM)

Denver's certainly a place that makes sense. Not sure if they'd pay the price though.

Matt (Nashville)

Assuming the Bucs don't draft Josh Freeman in the 1st round (silently praying that doesn't happen), lets say they take Vontae Davis. Then what do they do in rounds 2 and 3?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:39 PM)

Well, they don't have a 2 right now. Would love to see them get one somehow and get Ron Brace. If not, they've got to go DT in the third.

Bill (PA)

How many Peppers, Bucs, Panthers and Falcons questions are you going to take? I assume you know about other topics. Why not answer one and remove the doubt?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:39 PM)

This is the NFC South portion of the chat.

CC (Atlanta)

Glen Dorsey to ATL rumors true? Surely not.

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:40 PM)

Just rumors, from what I hear.

Ryan (Napa)

Pat, do you have your eye on anyone in, who won't be drafted, who could be this year's Clifton Smith?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:40 PM)

Deon Butler

Jamie (Estherville, IA)

When will Peppers sign his tender? My understanding is that no trades can be negotiated until that is signed. If so, there will be no draft day trades unless that is signed(or some team forks over 2 first rounders) right?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:41 PM)

Panthers can't talk trade until it's signed. But his agent can solicit deals from other teams and bring offers back to Panthers.

Paul (Augusta)

You had Deon Butler in the third round 15 minutes ago...

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:42 PM)

No, I don't think I did. He's a late round guy.

xSICKxWITHxITx

If Decoud is not ready then surely we will draft a safety. Who could we get that could start right away?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:42 PM)

Louis Delmas.

Adam (LA)

How are the saints looking salary cap wise?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:43 PM)

About $4.7 million under it right now.

Neal (Hartford)

This may be the NFC South portion of the chat but you have taken a lot more questions than anyone. Why is this? Because you only spout out one liners instead of going into detail like your counterparts. Put more detail into your answers.

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:44 PM)

And if I wrote you more detailed answers, people would be screaming for me to answer more questions. Do you realize there are 6,275 questions on here right now? I try to answer as many as I can.

Robert (Mass)

Now that Julius Peppers has signed his tender, is that a sign that he may be closer to coming to the Pats?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:45 PM)

He has NOT signed his tender -- unless something has happened in the 45 minutes since I've been on this chat.

Brian (Salisbury, MD)

Kiss off Neal we have a great insider representing the NFC South go cry elsewheres

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:45 PM)

Thank you.

Bruno (Orlando)

What do you see the Falcon's being able to get for Michael Vick if he is reinstated? if anything

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:46 PM)

Nothing. Sorry.

Shawn (Little Rock)

What's your personal take on Reggie Bush? I think there's always all this hype about how great he's going to perform and then bam! nothing. Do you think he was/is overrated?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:47 PM)

I think he was overrated as a No. 2 pick. But I don't think he's a bad player. Saints could help him out by figuring out how to use him better.

Drew B. (NOLA)

Do you see us drafting a qb in the late rounds for me to mentor? Joey and Mark are old and bore me.

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:48 PM)

Problem is, right now, you've only got three picks after No. 1. Don't think that's a luxury Saints can afford.

John (Orlando, FL)

How possible is it the Bucs trade up to get Raji if he falls to the middle of the first round?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:49 PM)

They don't have a No. 2 right now, so I don't think it's possible. Maybe you package your 1 and 3, but that leaves you without 2 and 3.

Julian(Carloina)

Who are the 4 teams Peppers wants to play for?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:50 PM)

New England and Dallas definitely. Not certain on other two. Denver, maybe.

Brian (Salisbury, MD)

I know your not posting my other comment because you don't want to junx the perfect TB draft...but pleaase tell me is ONE BUC PLACE as awesome as it looks online???

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:51 PM)

One Buc is a palace. Nicest facility I've seen.

Tym (Orlando, FL)

Who on the bucs roster do you see having an Antonio Bryant-type break out year?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:51 PM)

Antonio Bryant -- again. Long-term contract is great motivation.

Alex (Miami)

If you are the bucs, is trading up for sanchez an option right now?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:52 PM)

Don't think the ammo is there to do it.

Steve (Apex)

Peppers and his agent have botched their plan to get him out of Carolina. His agent isn't smart enough to solicit other deals. Why would the Panthers even listen to what he has to say anyway?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:52 PM)

No argument here.

Arthur (Charlotte)

OK, your time is almost up: Time for your absolutely shot in the dark best guess on what will happen with Peppers: Will he be traded pre- or during the draft? Where will he go? Don't be scared, it's just a guess. We won't hold you to it.

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:54 PM)

All right -- like you said -- just a guess. I'll say it happens during the draft. I'll say Denver. We'll see.

Howard (Ocala, FL)

Any chance a team would reveal their draft board after a draft is over? I think it would be very interesting

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:55 PM)

Not a chance. They're as secretive as the CIA with that kind of stuff.

Tim Tebow (Gainsville Florida)

Why are these 3 QB's even being mentioned in the first round, when they would be 3 round talent if a Sooner, a Texan, and a Gator QB where in this draft?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:55 PM)

You need to go to Urban Myer and say, "I gave you two championships. Now, make me an NFL QB."

Arthur (Charlotte)

ESPN BREAKING NEWS: Yasinskas declares unequivocally: Panthers/Broncos reach deal on Peppers. Just kidding! Thanks for going out on a limb!

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:56 PM)

Only a guess.

Brian (Salisbury, MD)

is ONE BUC PLACE the best in the NFL? Tell me something interesting about it. Please?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:57 PM)

Massive locker room. Great media room. Lots of parking. Good food. Atlanta's facility is pretty nice too.

Urban Myer (Gainsville Florida)

Should i help make Tim Tebow an NFL QB? Or use him to win another title?

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:58 PM)

You can do both, Urban.

Pat Collins (NJ)

Didn't realize this was the NFC South part of the chat my bad. I guess my only question would be why the Saints are projected by many to draft offense despite their defensive shortcomings from last year.

Pat Yasinskas
 (1:59 PM)

Mainly because Payton said they want a power runner. Might have been smoke screen. I've said all along they need to draft D. All right, time for me to pass it off to the next chatter. Thanks for stopping by.

Chris (Dallas)

Bill first of all your Buddy Pat has mentioned that Denver is looking like a landing spot for Peppers what do you think about this and the odds of this actually happening.

Pat Yasinskas
 (2:00 PM)

Ah, come on, I took one last look back before leaving because I knew this would happen. I only said Denver was a guess!!! Have fun with that Bill Williamson. I'm out. Thanks.

Bill Williamson
 (2:02 PM)

Hey guys, let's get rolling.

Ricky (Buffalo)

Chargers draft a RB in round 1. True or false?

Bill Williamson
 (2:03 PM)

False. If the Chargers get a second-round pick, I think they will take a running back then.

Colten (South Dakota)

Hey Bill, how are things. So Pat Yasinskas say's his guess is there is a Peppers trade to the Broncos during the draft. I would be fine with with is we get Peppers with our #18 pick and then take Maualuga with our #12 pick. What do you think? I think we need to grab at least one of the USC linebackers that are available. Why don't the Broncos seem to be more interested in them?

Bill Williamson
 (2:05 PM)

I need to catch up with Pat on that one. I think that would be a great, great trde for Denver.

Jason (PA)

How likely will the steelers trade up in the first round as in 2006 when they got holmes. And who do you think they'd most like to get in the first two rounds?

Bill Williamson
 (2:05 PM)

I think the Steelers may stand pat and see what falls to them. I like them taking Cal center Alex Mack at No. 32.

Derek (New Jersey)

Bill, how do you feel about the Giants drafting Britt out of Rutgers in round 1?

Bill Williamson
 (2:06 PM)

I could see that. Some scouts I've talked to believe he has a chance to be a stand out from this draft.

Bryan Miami, Florida

Heyward-bay, I have a feeling he'll do great things in the NFL, what are your opinions on him and what team do you think will pick him up?

Bill Williamson
 (2:09 PM)

You know what, Bryan? The guy scares me. There is a long history of draft busts from the receiver position. I have a bad feeling that he may make that list grow. Beware of the speed burner. There is a lot more to being an effective receiver in the NFL than just being fast.

Pat White(WV)

Where will I go and to whom? Will I be a QB?

Bill Williamson
 (2:09 PM)

Minnesota, receiver.

Birmingham, AL

Will John Parker even have chance to make it in the draft?

Bill Williamson
 (2:10 PM)

Denver is looking at him. I think he has a chance to make it.

Chuck, Indianapolis, IN

Who will the Colts draft?

Bill Williamson
 (2:10 PM)

Just a guess: DT Ziggy Hood.

raider fan(san diego)

Bill, Do you think Harvin's pos. test will push him into the 2nd round and if so do you think passing on Maclin and taking an OT with the 7th pick and hoping a falling ripple effect pushes Harvin, Britt, Heyward Bey, or Nicks back into the 2nd round because of Maclin falling back? Only concern I have with this is Seattle, Cleveland, Cincy, and Jags have picks ahead of us in the 2nd.

Bill Williamson
 (2:12 PM)

There will be a long run on receivers in the 25-40 range. I'd take the receiver early and then take a tackle at No. 40 if I'm Oakland.

NY

who will jets draft?

Bill Williamson
 (2:12 PM)

Another guess: Josh Freeman.

Buckley, Chico

Should any of the AFC West Teams consider trading for Peppers?

Bill Williamson
 (2:13 PM)

He'd be great for the 3-4 defenses in San Dieog, Denevr and Kansas City. I could see Denver and Kanas City going after him.

Nick (SLC)

Are Chargers going D in Round 1? Maulauga?

Bill Williamson
 (2:14 PM)

I think Rey is the guy there, yes. It'd be a good move. The guy is an impact player.

Steven(Ontario, CA)

Denver to take a CB on day 1...true or false?

Bill Williamson
 (2:15 PM)

I'd say false. Maybe in the 3-5 rounds.

Samuel (Kansas City)

Where do you see Aaron Maybin ending up?

Bill Williamson
 (2:17 PM)

He's an interesting guy to watch. If Raji goes to Cleveland at No. 5 and Tyson Jackson goes to Green Bay at No., 9, Maybin could fall. I'd say he goes to either San Francisco at No. 10, Buffalo at No. 11 or Denver at No. 12.

Joe (Columbus, OH)

What are you hearing about all the Chiefs players mentioned in trade rumors, Dorsey, Gonzo, JL, Waters, DJ?

Bill Williamson
 (2:20 PM)

Waters or Gonzalez could go this weekend. If not, I don't think they will be traded before the season. I'd still be surprised if the Cheifs traded Gonzalez. I really don't think they wnat to do it.

Ben (Denver)

Does Denver have a shot at all to get Raji or Jackson without trading up?

Bill Williamson
 (2:20 PM)

I don't think so on Raji. Maybe on Jackson.

James (Denver,CO)

How good is Tyson Jackson? Is he a perfect fit in Denver?

Bill Williamson
 (2:21 PM)

I think he is going to be solid. A good starter for the 3-4. I wouldn't expect a defense changer.

Byron (Boston, Massachusetts)

Hey Bill how's it going? Here's the question. What are the chances of the Patriots trading up to get Malcolm Jenkins? I think he would be a great fit on the Pats becuase we could move him over to safety which fills two needs. Cornerback and Safety.

Bill Williamson
 (2:22 PM)

If he gets past San Diego at No. 16 and Denver at No. 18, he could fall down to No. 23.

Eric (CA)

Bill, like many Raider fans, I'm not sold on Maclin. He could be good but needs a lot of time to develop. Isn't there more NFL ready players that can have more of an impact right away in Oakland? <cough> Raji <cough>

Bill Williamson
 (2:23 PM)

I'm with you. I'd be scared if I'm a Oakland fan and Maclin is the pick. I don't know if he's ready. Oakland needs a guy who is ready at receiver.

Josh (Grass Valley, Ca)

The chiefs send Dorsey to Oakland for Bush. Hows that sound

Bill Williamson
 (2:24 PM)

Sounds like a terrible trade for Kansas City. Hey, I like Bush but Dorsey was the No. 5 overall pick last year. He is worth a lot more.

Chris (Amarillo, TX)

Where do you see Denver going if Raji and Jackson are off the board at #12? And don't say Mark Sanchez.

Bill Williamson
 (2:25 PM)

Maybin if he is there.

RS (Denver)

Bill, what happens to Dumervil if Peppers comes to Denver? What is his trade value?

Bill Williamson
 (2:26 PM)

He'd be an outside linebacker.

kyle- kansas city MO

How big of an impact will Jeremy Maclin be on special teams this upcoming season?

Bill Williamson
 (2:27 PM)

That's where he'll probably make his biggest impact in 2009.

Jeff (LA, CA)

If the Raiders go receiver in Rd 1, won't they likely look defense (specifically pass rusher) over OT in Rd 2?

Bill Williamson
 (2:28 PM)

I really see them taking a receiver in round 1 and a tackle in round 2.

Chris, Denver

What are the chances the Broncos take a RB in round 1 or 2?

Bill Williamson
 (2:30 PM)

If Denver gets a quality defensive player at No. 12 and they are not in love with any of the defensive players available at No. 18 and Beanie Wells is there at No. 18, I think Denver will take him.

Bill Williamson
 (2:30 PM)

If Denver gets a quality defensive player at No. 12 and they are not in love with any of the defensive players available at No. 18 and Beanie Wells is there at No. 18, I think Denver will take him.

bret ny

i keep hearing all this hype about Tom Cable's "cadillac" OL...do you think it makes sense to take a first round OL when they've brought in 5 young OL by trade and Free Agency?

Bill Williamson
 (2:31 PM)

None of those guys are the answer, especially at tackle. You can aruge that Barnes is an impact player but he hasn't livved up to his potential and he signed for just one year.

Bill Williamson
 (2:31 PM)

None of those guys are the answer, especially at tackle. You can aruge that Barnes is an impact player but he hasn't livved up to his potential and he signed for just one year.

Hass (Piscatway NJ)

Hey Bill, how come there's not more talk of the Raiders picking up a defensive lineman or linebacker, it seems as if that's been the missing piece to the defense for a few years now. Also, are there any safeties out there that the Raiders might be looking at?

Bill Williamson
 (2:32 PM)

I see Oakland taking a D-lineman and a safety.

BREAKING NEWS:

Chiefs trade GONZO to ATL for 2nd round pick. who gets the better of that deal?

Bill Williamson
 (2:34 PM)

We're working on it. I'm making calls as I type. I'll let you know. Let me know what you hear.

Jimmy (LA)

Bill, isnt Raji overhyped? The same things were being said about Sedrick Ellis last year, and he was NOT an impact player. DT's have huge bust potential!

Bill Williamson
 (2:35 PM)

Yes, it's a tough position to star at right away but I think Raji can be a big-time player and he is worth the risk.

Bill Williamson
 (2:37 PM)

Breaking news: Gonzalez was traded to Atlanta for a 2010 second-round pick, Terrible trade for the Chiefs. Wow.

Tim (Seattle, Wa)

Hi Bill, There are always suprises in the draft (IE; Mario Williams in 2006) And with two 1st round picks this year the Broncos could shake things up. Speculation has been that Seattle could be taking Sanchez at the #4 spot. Do you see the Bronco's trading that far up for him?

Bill Williamson
 (2:39 PM)

I don't see Denver trading up that far. I think they'd only take Sanchez if he fell to No. 12.

Mike

Terrible news for the Chiefs, but great news for the rest of the West!!!

Bill Williamson
 (2:39 PM)

Crazy. That is brutal.

Ryan (Denver)

What is the likelyhood of Tony Scheffler being dealt on draft day? What do you believe he's worth and who do you believe is interested in him?

Bill Williamson
 (2:40 PM)

I'm hearing now he likely won't be traded but I still wouldn't be shocked.

Mikey(Lackawanna,NY)

IF the Bills offered a 5th rd pick and Roscoe Parrish for Brian Waters? Do you think the Chiefs would be interested?

Bill Williamson
 (2:40 PM)

I think they should take it.

Jeff (LA, CA)

This makes up for getting Cassell and Vrabel for just a 2.

Bill Williamson
 (2:41 PM)

Yep.

Bill Williamson
 (2:44 PM)

I was just told to end the chat early in the wake of the huge Gonzalez news. I will be working on that. AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky will be up shortly. Enjoyed it, BW.

Paul Kuharsky
 (2:58 PM)

Sorry for the brief delay. Bill's got news and I was on the road. I'm here to talk (mostly) AFC South until 3:45, when James Walker will take over and allow me to attend a Titans press conference. So here we go...

James (D.C.)

Will the redskins trade up, trade down, or stay where their at???

Paul Kuharsky
 (2:59 PM)

Lots of indications now they are looking to move up for Sanchez.

Clay (Jacksonville, FL)

If Stafford and Sanchez are both gone before #8, will there realistically be any potential trade partners for the Jags to move back?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:00 PM)

A lot less for sure. But it'll mean one of the receivers, tackles or Raji is there -- not a bad lot. Landing one of those would be good, I think. They are certainly rooting against trades to get in front of them.

Anthony (Kearny NJ)

will the colts go WR or DT in your opinion Paul

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:01 PM)

Depends who's there. And even if Jerry and Nicks are there, Polian could love someone somewhere else.

Gary (NY, NY)

Since everyone is talking how Giants wont trade for Braylon, what do you think Giants will do to solve their need in #1 WR

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:01 PM)

Britt or Nicks at 29, or maybe a move up for Heyward-Bey.

Jason (PA)

What do you think the chances of the Colts getting Jerry in the 1st and trading whatever is necessary to get Robiskie after that...

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:02 PM)

I don't see the Colts "trading whatever is necessary" for anything. Not their style. But that would be a nice scenario, to land those two.

Corey (Houston)

I realize Slaton had a great rookie year and the problems that may arise if you take a 1st rd. rb regarding pay scales, but if Wells is available, I dont see how Houston can pass him up considering they have nobody on the roster that can pick up short yardage and goaline carries. your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:05 PM)

Depends on their grades. If they think he's better than the defenders there, it's possible. Knowshon maybe too. It would mean, to me, they are thinking at least a little that if they get even better on offense, it'll ease the pressure on the defense. Rest of draft would really be defense heavy. I don't see it though. You hit a HR with Slaton in the third, you can find another good back third or fourth. Gibbs has had success with a lot of lower-end backs.

Cody (Texas)

Do the Texans take a QB late in the draft to groom? If so, who?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:06 PM)

Maybe. But I can't pretend I know who they like at QB in the sixth or seventh round. I don't think it's a need.

Abraham, Mexico city

If A.Smith,Raji, and Crabtree still on the board when the Jaguars pick, Who dou you think would be a better fit?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:07 PM)

I like the idea of Raji and re-establishing the identity they had with Stroud and Henderson. But I suspect they'll take Crabtree. Maybe they get to chose from two of those, I can't imagine all three.

pat haskell NJ

whats going on with the titans tampering charges?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:08 PM)

I asked for an update this week and the league had none. There isn't a formal complaint by the Titans. I don't know that anything will come of it.

Ben (Hendersonville, TN)

Is there a chance that the Titans will get Boldin? If they did get him do you think that he would be happy playing for the Titans offense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:09 PM)

If he was a Titan, he'd have a big contract, because he's getting one with any trade. So he'd be happy. That said, I don't see them going after him.

Chris (Washington, D.C.)

Seriously, if the Texans take a RB before round 4, they're insane. Slaton is lightning, and if their front office can't see that, they need to find a new line of work.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:10 PM)

They know that. They are just looking for "Thunder." Rick Smith mentioned Chris Brown yesterday. I hope they aren't counting on him. A pick fourth or later should suffice.

Nick (Indy)

Spotlight: With the 27th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, The Indianapolis Colts select...?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:10 PM)

I've been saying Nicks.

DJ (VaBeach)

Why does it seem that Titans have no interest in Bouldin? Wouldnt he be a perfect WR for Collins with the short routes and great after the catch ability? While Collins played great last year he still has a limited amount of life left in the NFL, Bouldin would open that offense up and make them just that much better, shouldnt they be making moves to win now?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:12 PM)

Yeah they should. But that sort of aggressive move is not what they do. And they see a big physical guy who's not the huge downfield threat -- that's what they always talk about adding but never do. A true burner. I think they think Gage is a poor man's Boldin. Don't kill me for that, that's what I think they think.

Nick (Indy)

If Nicks were to come to the colts, is he #2 receiver material, keeping gonzo in the slot?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:13 PM)

Yes.

CJ (Jax)

Any running backs you see the Jaguars eyeing? And what are your thoughts on the new uniforms?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:14 PM)

Uniforms look good. I am a little worried about the sparkly helmets. Want to see them in person. I don't know that they think of RB as a priority. They want more MJD and want 10 carries a game for Greg Jones. Lots of other holes to fill.

Bob Whitis (Atlanta,GA)

Paul what do you think about the colts drafting Pettigrew(spelling)? and playing him mainly on the line. In that case it puts dallas in the slot where he is most dangerous, and putting Gonzales on the field to take Marvins position? It would also work great with the 2 TE set that they have gotten away from in recent past!

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:16 PM)

It's an interesting idea. But it makes them less of a downfield team, and I think they need to threaten deep more to get Addai some room. They could march down the field on a lot of teams with that group. But then WR depth is an issue if Wayne or Gonzo goes down.

Jake (Spring, TX)

What do you see the Texans doing with the first pick? I'm hearing Clay Matthews, or possibly a trade down.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:16 PM)

I think they'd like to do both -- trade down to get Clay Matthews a bit later.

George (Chicago)

Any chance the best reciever in the draft, Hakeem Nicks, will fall to the Bears in the second round?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:16 PM)

No.

Mike (Iowa City, IA)

What team do you think Shonn Greene will end up with? There are issues with him being 23 for the start of this season and the less than blazing speed. But you can't argue with his production and consistency.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:17 PM)

I think he'd fit with Slaton in Houston.

Matthew (Indian Head, MD)

Do you see the Colts taking a WR in round 1 and targeting Sen'Derrick Marks or Fili Moala in Round 2?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:19 PM)

I don't know that the DT has to come in the first or second round. How about a guy like Chris Baker from Hampton in the fifth or sixth? He's 326 and runs under a 5.0...

Anthony (Lexington, KY)

Paul, I agree with your poor man's boldin comment. With our 30th, and if everything sets up perfectly, who would the Titan's want more than anything?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:20 PM)

Cop out answer, I know. They'd want someone they had rated 19th or 20th to be there and they'd pounce. They like all the USC backers.

Josh (Naples, FL)

Are the Colts more likely to look for depth at safety or cornerback? This is contract yr. for M. Jackson.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:22 PM)

Cornerback, I think. Bullittt is great and they just re-signed Giordano. Look at the blog -- I just did a column post on how potential 2010 free agents will impact things, and said it makes corner a big spot for Indy.

Cato ((Ontario,California))

do you see the Buccaneers being able to draft 1 of the USC linebackers at their position??

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:22 PM)

Yes.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

Would you be surprised if the Texans finished first or second in the division this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:23 PM)

I'd be surprised if they finished first. I think they could finish second or even make the playoffs as third. Maybe.

Brian Orapko (Austin Tx) [via mobile]

Wouldn't I fit in houston with Mario Williams? Will I be a top 10 pick?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:23 PM)

You'll be top 10 and out of Houston's range. Congrats!

Bret: (Los Angeles, CA)

Why did the texans sign big Dan to play backup QB and give him a lot of money? I like most of the Texans move, but this one appears to be a poor choice.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:24 PM)

Backup QBs all around the league should be sending him thank you notes for setting the $3 million a year market. I don't love him either, but Kubiak knows QBs and did pretty nice work with Sage (Rosencopter incident excepted).

Jordan (Hendersonville, TN)

Will darius butler be around for the titans pick?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:25 PM)

I think he will. I don't know that they will take him. He's a little thin/ soft, I've heard.

Luke (Houston, TX)

Do you see the Texans trading down and trying to pick up James Laurinaitis, a great prospect who has fallen out of media hype, due to being a constant high level player? Maybe picking up a Center with a later draft pick after the trade back?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:27 PM)

And what becomes of DeMeco Ryans?

Nate (Burns, TN)

When was the last time the Titans picked the guy everyone thought they would?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:27 PM)

Vince Young.

Nate (Indy)

I saw the interesting piece ESPN did with Brian Billick projecting Knowshon Moreno to the Colts. Assuming the Colts were interested in Moreno, how far up would they have to maneuver to get him? Because it sure seems like there's no chance he'd be there at 27.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:28 PM)

I can't see them moving up. If they do, major indictment, obviously, of Addai. If he's there at 27, they could pounce.

Tim, Toronto

Are the Colts back at the top of the division this year in your opinion Paul?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:29 PM)

Neck and neck Titans and Colts. Reserve the right to change my mind.

Scotty Indy

Could the Colts take a Quarterback at all in the draft?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:30 PM)

I doubt it. Too early for Peyton's heir. And if he goes down, they're in trouble no matter who the backup is.

Mike (Atlanta)

Paul what do you think about the Colts in the mid to later rounds of the draft picking up Vaughn Martin! The guy is a mommoth at 6'-4" 330 lbs! The guy ran a 4.97-40 and benched 345 44 times!! I believe he is a diamond in the rough!!

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:32 PM)

I like it. They might be thrilled to get a guy half as big. But NFLDraftScout has him unrated -- so there's got to be some concern.

Kamal (New York)

What would be the biggest nightmare scenario for the Jags?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:35 PM)

Two receivers, two OTs, two QBs, Raji as the first seven picks.

Joey (Gallatin, TN)

Do the Titans take a wide receiver this year if Harvin or Nicks are available?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:35 PM)

Not Harvin.

Mike (Atlanta, GA)

If the Titans make another playoff run (and I think they will) What will become of Vince Young? Since he's do the bulk of his contract after this season, can the Titans afford him to get paid to ride the pine?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:36 PM)

This year yes, next year no. He could lose the No. 2 spot in the preseason and get cut, I believe.

Tim, Toronto

Which team seems to be the toughest to predict year in and year out for draft picks (AFC SOUTH teams only) ???

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:37 PM)

I don't think anyone is predictable, unless you mean the Patriots/ Steelers/Colts being predictably good, the Lions/Raiders/Bengals being predictably bad.

Devin (Sioux Falls, SD)

Who made your mock draft? A Jags fan? Crabtree will be the 2nd WR accepted? And fall to 8th pick overall? RIIIIGHT. BSPN, Im about done watching your lies.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:38 PM)

How are they lies if they are predictions?

Eric (ny)

Paul, where will Marvin Harrison end up?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:39 PM)

Maybe nowhere. Maybe Philly during camp if they aren't happy. There is zero buzz about him and has been none since the move.

Jarrod(Houston, Texas)

Do you think that it is possible for the texans to draft a FS and SS in the second round if they get 2 2nds with a trade back.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:40 PM)

Anything is possible. But I think you should be happy with one in the first two rounds. Only about five guys rated as possible second rounders, and no first-round safeties expected.

Cody (Texas)

Would Marvin Harrison consider playing in Houston and being the #2 guy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:42 PM)

If he wanted to play and he's willing not to be paid big, there is a chance he could go anywhere. I don't see Houston as interested. They've got nice complimentary guys in Walter and Anderson and even Davis.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:43 PM)

I enjoyed it folks. We shift a bit early from the AFC South to the dulcet tones of James Walker from the AFC North blog. Have at it James...

James Walker
 (3:52 PM)

Ok, everyone. Let's talk some AFC North.

Jeremy (Columbus, Ohio

Will the Browns go after their most glaring need and actually draft a defensive player at #5? If so who would be a good fit?

James Walker
 (3:54 PM)

A lot of Cleveland's draft plans depends on what happens in the next 48 hours. The Edwards trade talks have slowed (I don't think they're dead yet). But for the most part I think they will go defensive front 7.

Garett (Austin, TX)

Hey James! Dedicated follower of your AFC North blog. Huge fan! Just a hunch here, but I don't see the Steelers taking Alex Mack in Round 1. 99% of mock drafts have the Steelers taking him, but I just don't believe that they'll take a center who that high who isn't a head and shoulders above what they have on the team already. I could see them trying to trade out of the 1st round entirely. Your thoughts?

James Walker
 (3:56 PM)

The Steelers have the flexibility to do a lot of things because they don't have many needs. I don't think trading down is the best option. Pittsburgh already has nine picks, three or four of which may not make the team. If anything, I can see Pittsburgh moving up to some a player the team likes, not getting more picks.

Eric (Huntington, WV)

Can the Browns move out of that #5 pick and is there any buzz around DA?

James Walker
 (3:58 PM)

There isn't much DA talk going on, Eric. I think after the draft, when teams may not get the QB it sought in the draft, teams may view Anderson as an option. But nothing is going on at this moment. The Browns are trying to drum up interest in the No. 5 pick. Mark Sanchez is really the only hope of trading down. Otherwise, Cleveland will stay and use the pick.

Jerry (Texas)

Dont you think the Browns are setting up their QBs, either Quinn or Anderson for failure if they trade away Edwards, I mean they would have lost Winslow and Edwards their two biggest weapons this offseason, what will the QB have to work with, a rookie WR?

James Walker
 (4:01 PM)

A lot of Browns questions today. I wouldn't look at it that way Jerry. Eric Mangini is trying to re-make the roster to his liking as quickly as possible, because in the NFL you only have a couple years before you're on the hot seat. So the plan is to turnover the roster as drastic as possible the first year with his own players/draft picks. Cleveland hopes to be competitive in 2009, but the plan is really to win by 2010.

Mike (Pittsburgh)

Hey James, you do a great job. Any chance if Harvin falls to #32 that Pittsburgh would contemplate taking Percy (who could immediately help in the return game)? Especially knowing how Pittsburgh normally takes the best available player (i.e. Mendenhall)?

James Walker
 (4:04 PM)

I'm not sure Harvin falls that far, but I don't think he's a match for Pittsburgh. He has some skills the Steelers would like, but there has been some reported red flags in terms of character concerns. The Steelers could use help elsewhere anyway.

Julien ( Cleveland)

Most mock drafts have the Bengals taking a tackle with the 6th pick. If Eugene Monroe (possible knee problem) and Andre Smith (immaturity) are both available where should they go?

James Walker
 (4:07 PM)

Eugene Monroe. Teams know the medicals by now. If Monroe and Crabtree really had problems, they wouldn't be projected top 10 picks at this point. I don't think the Bengals need an immature player. This is a big year for a lot of people in that building, and they need rookies they can count on.

Jason (Leesburg, VA)

Since Pittsburgh re-signed their entire OL, do you see them maybe trading up to draft Tyson Jackson if he makes it past pick 22?

James Walker
 (4:08 PM)

Good player, Jason. But that's not the Steelers' style. They will probably wait until the second day to add depth to the defensive line.

Jimmy (Costa Mesa, Ca)

Love your work James, thanks for all you do! Any chance the Steelers draft a kickoff returner early? Man, I got tired of seeing the FB bring the ball to the 23 yd line and get tackled by the first guy downfield. Would Percy Harvin be a bad idea because of off the field issues? Let's recall Santonio had the same issues as a rookie. If not why doesn't Santonio return KO's?

James Walker
 (4:10 PM)

Jimmy, I think there is a good chance a cornerback will be taken in the first day, either with the first or second pick. Most likely that corner will have some return ability as well, where they can fill two needs.

Dale (Mass)

Does Orakpo play LB or DE in the pros?

James Walker
 (4:11 PM)

Dale, it depends on the team he is drafted by. A 4-3 team could keep him at DE. A 3-4 team could mix it up and use him at linebacker. He's shown the ability to do both in college.

Brandon (Warren)

Is there ANY chance for Curry to drop to the Browns at 5? Even with an Edwards trade wouldn't they HAVE to select Curry with the number 5 pick?

James Walker
 (4:14 PM)

Curry would have to be the pick if he falls. Unless a team like KC or Seattle trades out, I'm not sure that is likely.

Tammy (Paden City, WV)

Please, please answer my question! Do you think Pat White is a good fit for Pittsburgh? He certainly hasn't been shy about voicing his desire to play for them. Do you think they would grab him if he is still available at the bottom of the 2nd?

James Walker
 (4:16 PM)

Hello Tammy. I do not think White is a good fit. The Steelers have a similar player in Dennis Dixon whom they're trying to teach the QB position. Unless White wants to play WR full-time, which it doesn't appear he does, then I don't feel Pittsburgh is all that interested in taking on another project at QB.

Darren Pittsburgh

If the steelers were to move up in round 1 or 2, what players do you see the them targeting and how far would they be willing/able to move?

James Walker
 (4:21 PM)

If the Steelers move up, it would probably be for a cornerback or OT they really like. Although they haven't shown much interest, I could see them moving up in the 20s to take Michael Oher if he's still on the board. That's just a possible scenario that I see. I have no backing on that. Plenty of centers will be there at No. 32.

David (Houston, Texas)

why is no one talking about Graham harrell.

James Walker
 (4:24 PM)

System QB. Not many NFL QBs come out of Texas Tech.

Dale Stewlow (San Clemente)

Why is Graham Harrell rated so low in the draft when he won the quarterback of the year award and Mark Sanchez and Mathew Stafford wernt even in the running?

James Walker
 (4:26 PM)

To elaborate, it's not all about stats. It's also about how well you can translate to the NFL game. Harrell may be able to, but it's clear a lot of GMs are doubtful.

Jr (Pasadena Md)

Any chance Rey Malualga falls to thhe Ravens?

James Walker
 (4:28 PM)

Baltimore would like that to happen. His physical style resembles Bart Scott a lot. I would say it's an ok chance, but not a great chance.

Mike (Pittsburgh)

Hey James, do you see a breakout year for Timmons this year, similar to Woodley's last year?

James Walker
 (4:32 PM)

Not to the degree of Woodley, because I'm not sure he will get the same amount of snaps/playing time. But he is going to be a good player. People don't know this, but he may be one of the hardest hitters on the team. If Timmons plays more, people will see.

Kenny (Columbus)

What would it take for the Ravens to get Boldin from Arizona?

James Walker
 (4:33 PM)

Kenny, the asking price is a first- and a third-round pick. Baltimore doesn't want to give up a third of its draft.

Mike(Hereford, Maryland)

How much do the Ravens "love" Darrius Heyward-Bey? He seems like a total bust to me

James Walker
 (4:34 PM)

Ok, everyone I'm have to pass the chat off now. Thanks again for your time and check out the AFC North blog. -JW.

KC Joyner
 (4:35 PM)

DHB is, in my view, next to Harvin as the biggest potential boom/bust guy.

brian (de)

KC, can you be the AFC east portion since Tim Graham isn't here. Would Pettigrew be a solid option for Miami? It could help the passing and running game.

KC Joyner
 (4:36 PM)

Brian, I don't think the Fins need any help at flex TE but if Pettigrew could improve their TE run blocking metrics (which were really inconsistent last year), it would be huge help for their offense.

Chris (PA)

KC, Who do you see the Eagles taking with their first round pick?

KC Joyner
 (4:37 PM)

I can see them going in so many directions but it will likely be on offense. If it is RB, maybe Moreno.

Ben (Chicago)

Do you think there is any chance B.J. Raji could be picked in the top five?

KC Joyner
 (4:38 PM)

It would be a surprise if he wasn't. He's that rare DT who can both stuff the run and rush the passer.

steve(phillypa)

if hakeem nicks is there at32,do the steelers take him?

KC Joyner
 (4:39 PM)

I see O line in their 1st round future.

B. Michael (The LC)

KC, What's your take on the 49ers? What direction do you think they'll go in this draft, overall?

KC Joyner
 (4:40 PM)

They need O line help and there are a number of good OTs, so that's probably where they go.

Brian (Michigan)

If the Lions don't take Stafford #1, how far would he potentially fall?

KC Joyner
 (4:41 PM)

Probably to SF at #11.

Mikey(Lackawanna,NY)

KC, Do you think the Bills should try and trade for disgruntled Pro Bowl LG Brian Waters?

KC Joyner
 (4:42 PM)

Not from what I've seen on the Chiefs tape so far this year. I've got four of their games in the book and while Waters didn't play badly, he sure isn't worth paying any kind of a high price for.

DJ (VaBeach)

Teams seem to be shy to pull the trigger on a Bouldin trade, would the Cardinals get more interest if they asked for 2009 2nd and 2010 1st instead of a 2009 1st and 3rd?

KC Joyner
 (4:43 PM)

Maybe but the idea behind why Boldin isn't getting more play is that he is a possession receiver. Teams just aren't going to part with lots of high picks for that kind of wideout.

Nate Genovia (Wahiawa, Hawaii)

Is there any possibility that the Rams take Michael Crabtree with the number 2 overall pick in the draft?

KC Joyner
 (4:43 PM)

I highly doubt it. They've already got their vertical threat and have way too many other needs to pull a Detroit and stock up on wideouts.

Terry (Rock Hill, SC)

KC, i need moral support. Why did they give $42mm to jake delhomme???

KC Joyner
 (4:44 PM)

Because the offense responds to him. He's sparks the huddle in ways that every other QB they've put in there hasn't done.

Chris (MD)

On Hakeem Nicks - I like him as a receiver over the middle for the Ravens more than the speedy DHB, do you see the Ravens picking Nicks?

KC Joyner
 (4:46 PM)

He'll be on their list but there might be some other WRs on the board as well. If that is the case, whoever they pick will show what kind of offense Harbaugh wants to run.

Nema (San Francisco)

Why would the Raiders draft Maclin if Crabtree is available?

KC Joyner
 (4:46 PM)

I'd be completely shocked if they did. Crabtree is hands down the best WR prospect in this draft.

Brian IL

I think it might just be me but am I the only one who's not completely convinced that Michael Crabtree is going to be a superstar? People are already comparing him to Larry Fitzgerald..... he's 2 inches shorter than what he was believed to be, he's definitely lacks the ideal separation speed that many great WR have, he has some route running issues, he isn't as physical as many people make him out to be, and a lot of his production is probably due to playing in the Texas Tech system. I just don't like how everyone thinks he is a can't miss prospect like Calvin Johnson was a few years ago when he has some serious holes in his game.

KC Joyner
 (4:47 PM)

The WR position tends to have a lot of busts, so you might be right in doubting Crabtree. Still, he has the best physical skills of this WR bunch and that's why he'll be the first one picked.

Joe (Decatur, GA)

Is Braylon Edwards worth what the Browns are asking for? I feel like a 2 & 5 aren't enough. He's a good fit for the Giants and gettin a 1st round pick this year will help the Browns.

KC Joyner
 (4:49 PM)

Cleveland is getting hurt by the draft being full of WR prospects. That's what is driving the price down.

Terry (Rock Hill, SC)

Any other QB could've thrown 5 INT's in the playoff loss too...But not for $42mm.

KC Joyner
 (4:50 PM)

That's $8 mill per int, right?!

Max (Columbus, OH)

Any chance the Eagles give Sheldon Brown his wish if it means they get Boldin or Edwards in return?

KC Joyner
 (4:51 PM)

Brown had the lowest YPA of any starting CB in the league last year (yes, even lower than Nnamdi). They need strong coverage CBs and with the way he played last year, they should do whatever they need to do to sign him.

Mikey(Lackawanna,NY)

KC, What were your thoughts on the Jason Peters trade? Was Peters worth all that dough$$$$$?

KC Joyner
 (4:52 PM)

He gave up 11.5 sacks, so I don't quite agree with Andy Reid that he is the best LT in the league. He has the talent to be the best, however, and if he returns to his 2007 form, it was a great signing for the Iggles.

Alonzo (Savannah,=, Ga)

KC, With almost everyones mock draft saying TE Brandon Pettigrew going to the ATL in the first round, will the trade for Gonz change that?

KC Joyner
 (4:53 PM)

Maybe, but Gonzo may only have a couple of years left. Plus, they need a tight tight end (i.e. not a flex) and Pettigrew could serve that purpose.

Leonard Stephens (Bay Area)

Hey so this saturday do you think there a chance Oakland will Get Crabtree at No.7 maclin is on every Mock Draft and he does have speed and Oakland Loves Speed But we already have speed With Johnnie Lee..i think jamarcus needs a Solid WR with him and i say Crabtree is the Answer

KC Joyner
 (4:55 PM)

There is a very good chance both will be on the board at #7. I'd bet Oakland goes for Crabtree.

CC (Atlanta)

KC, Atlanta has a blocking TE -- Ben Hartsock. There is ZERO chance draft Pettigrew... come on man!

KC Joyner
 (4:55 PM)

Please, Ben Hartsock? He is a mediocre blocking TE at best. The person asked if there was a chance they would go for Pettigrew and I gave them the possible rationale for it.

Matt (Lawrence, MA)

For the Giants, if they don't pick up a wide receiver in the first round of the draft, what position do you see them addressing with that pick?

KC Joyner
 (4:57 PM)

Linebacker would be the next best bet but unless all of the big wideouts are off the board, they'll go in that direction.

dale stewlow (san clemente)

why do the vikings still start adrian peterson? he is so overrated and he sucks. i think chester taylor should over him, what are your thoughts?

KC Joyner
 (4:58 PM)

I never thought I'd hear someone say Adrian Peterson is overrated. Wow.

dave(pa)

would the eagles draft knowshon moreno

KC Joyner
 (4:59 PM)

Absolutely. He is exactly the kind of RB they need. I'd be surprised if they didn't take him if he is still on the board.

Jerry Reese (ny, ny)

KC- You have no idea what I'll do. Look at my rep its all there.... besides when have I ever drafted a WR in round 1?

KC Joyner
 (5:00 PM)

Yeah, Jerry, but you need a WR really badly. I know Hixon and Smith can fill some roles, and Boss is a solid flex WR candidate, but you are still short one guy.

Cowboys R Not Ok At Wr. What Do U Think?

KC Joyner
 (5:03 PM)

I did an article for the Maple Street Press Cowboys preview about the Boys passing game. In a nutshell, they were quite productive despite Owens not being what he used to be. They have all the potential tools in place to be just fine at WR as is and they could still find some help in the draft if they so desire. Well, gotta run. Hope you all enjoy the draft and hope to see you here next week!
