...previously on Chat with AJ... Manny Corpas is struggling, We like Tim Lincecum, we don't like overvaluing pitchers. And now, the exciting conclusion to our double-header chat...
Shin Soo-Choo - could do enough to be a Top-50 hitter, but not much higher than that.
Please talk about the impact that Joe Mauer's return will have on the Twins rotation. This seems to be a forgotten factor.
It's a very fair point. If it were just one pitcher who was struggling, perhaps you could say it was "his problem" but with the whole staff underwhelming us, it's clear they miss Mauer immensely.
Knowing what you know today about how each player's April would turn out, what would be your top 5 if you were to redraft this year?
Ian Kinsler Zack Greinke Albert Pujols Aaron Hill Raul Ibanez
Hmm, so does that make you more hopeful for Liriano?
Yes. I'm not starting him right now, but I'm not cutting him either.
Ubaldo still worth holding onto or should I start looking for better options?
Definitely concerned about Ubaldo. Wouldn't want him on my roster right now, and I don't see light at the end of the tunnel right now.
You top 2 of those 5, would you sell high on them right now?
Hill and Ibanez, absolutely.
really? you buying what A Hill is selling in terms of top 5 overall from this point forward? if so, please send me an invite to a midseason league.
I was taking that question as "Who are your Top 5 through April?" I don't think he's Top 5 from here on out.
Scherzer, Johnathon Sanchez, Kelvim Escobar? Any of this pitchers sleepers for you?
I think I'd pass on all of the above for 09.
but the question was who are your top 5 in a redraft league....so that is who you would pick?
Definitely Pujols and Kinsler. Probably Ad Gonzalez, Grady and Longoria.
Can you rank them for the rest of the season: Fielder, Votto, Pence, N. Cruz
I like Votto of the four, with most concern towards Prince.
Can we expect vintage A-Rod production when he returns, despite all that's going on?
I think A-Rod was due for a sub-standard 2009 (by A-Rod standards) before the steroids talk, before the injury, before the book... but once he's on the field I don't think any of that outside stuff comes into play.
Coco Crisp or Elijah Dukes? Projections based on what we've seen thus far?
If I thought Dukes was sure to not get sent to Triple-A for his attitude, I'd rate him higher than Crisp. However, he could be gone tomorrow. He's too risky to own. Crisp is too in love with the HR and without more GB's his value is limited.
Really? I'm Top 5 in a redraft league? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!
Stay classy, Adrian.
You brain is fried from two chats....let me take over from here.
Oh, but you already know you can't change what I'm about to type, so why bother trying...
What are you 'concerned' about?
24 K's in 74 ABs. If you don't make contact, you don't give up the fantasy goodness.
Off to a slow start or concerned?
Concerned. Quite frankly when I looked at his stats, I was surprised they were as good as they were, runs and RBI-wise.
Billy Butler...is he ready to break out
The beauty of April is that there's a real big chance to pretty up the mess really quickly, as in a single 4-for-5 day adding 50 points to your BA. He is who you think he is.
I'm the only thing Billy Butler may break out of after a couple more pizzas.
I realize your response was off the top of your head, but you wouldn't put Utley ahead of any of those guys either in a "best through April" or "best for the rest of the year" ranking?
Second base is loaded this year - Utley, Cano, O-Dog, Brian Roberts. All are having great starts - I can't pick them all, or my lineup would be pretty unbalanced.
Don't steal my line, AJ.
I know, Denny. You'll sell it, but you won't give it away for free.
Please explain the sell high on Ibanez? Isn't he a product of better lineup?
Very simple. You don't lose stats once you trade him, and I don't think he finishes at .357... so if I can get value for him from a player who has started slowly in relation to my projections, I would do so.
is it smart to buy low on texeria, what about J-Roll?
I can't imagine Tex doesn't come around. As for J-Roll, I'm not as confident.
Adam Dunn strikes out all the time too, but he still delivers the "fantasy goodness" (exactly 40 goodies a year over the last few).
True, but .320 and many K's is not as troublesome as .240 and many K's.
This morning you made it sound like you wern't high on Beltran. Do you think he is a sell-high guy right now with the high average? What other OFs do you think will finish with comparable numbers to him?
My problem with Beltran is the lack of aggression on the basepaths, and the lack of runs that the Mets are scoring as a team. He's not going to hit any better, and the overall production just isn't there now. He's still an OF I want in my lineup, I just am shocked his production isn't higher given how well he has hit so far.
Along the lines of the "year end stat" would you be keeping or buying a Berkman? Or, is there some injury in your eyes that is lending to these numbers. I am trying to work a Berkman/SP for Utley/SP deal.
I think you have to wonder if there isn't something wrong with him, because the peripherals are just as lousy as his stats indicate. That doesn't bode well for the rest of the season, and if you get a good enough offer, I'd take it.
Cueto has seen his walk rate go down... will this continue?
I think it will. The WHIP is is a good place right now, and he's not overthrowing. He's moved into a No. 5 starter in my book.
So who's the closer in Colorado and should we care?
You should always be aware, if not care. Street just subbed in last night because Corpas had worked the last two - but poorly. I think it is still Corpas today, but it could well be Street by the weekend.
What percentage of questions are you able to answer in a one-hour chat?
It just went up by .03
What kind of season do you anticipate for Nyjer Morgan? He seems like he can hit for average, but the power doesn't seem to be anywhere in sight. Would you drop him for Adrian Beltre if you weren't dependent on speed?
Nearly all of his value is in SB, although the average looks good too. I think he's probably a Top-40 player for April, but there's no way he'll be anywhere near that lofty height by season's end.
But - he's still a better player than Beltre.
pena or votto @ 1B?
Pena, but it is close.
I can't believe no one has asked about the updated closer situation in Washington, and your comment earlier. You said you don't see Beimel getting the job next week and that you favor Taveras keeping it. Nats manager himself said he'll probably go with Beimel.....so what are your final thoughts on this? Closers are very valuable in h2h leagues, so please answer#$@#$#@!$!$@#!$ (seizure)
Since Manny Acta is the one who gets to make those decisions, I'd listen to him over me. Doesn't mean I agree with him... or disagree for that matter. I actually think Beimel is a better choice... but I'll believe it when I see it.
Greinke....AL cy young or sell high asap?
I think he's this year's Cliff Lee.
Any news on why Salty was taken out today?
Reports say it was "eye irritation" - that's all I know.
So you really think Rollins is in for a really bad year, huh? Bad like how bad? Would you rather have Alex Gonzalez, say? Or Khalil Greene? How bad are you saying?
.260-20-20 is what I see. That's not Alex Gonzalez bad, but it's not good enough by Rollins' standards.
This years Cliff Lee? Last time I checked Greinke was drafted in every league this year and Cliff Lee next to none last year. That said, could Jordan Zimmermann have a similar breakout season?
Oh come on, Will... I was asked if he was Cy Young worthy... that's the comparison. I wasn't saying he and Lee were clones in every category. Geez.
Name game: Sabathia or Harden; Soriano or Upton.
Harden and Soriano, assuming no injuries will befall either.
My hospital is loaded with baseball players, Webb, Lackey, Velverde, Drew. Is it time to stick a fork in Webb
Horsepuckey! For 2008, I might consider getting something via the trade route for Webb.... but in a keeper, I keep.
Greinke cannot not be compared to Lee as Greinke is right handed and Cliff has two f's. There is no comparison.
You're no Will, my friend...
Pounce immediately or wait-and-see if Laporta gets called up to replace Pronk? How about if Gamel gets called up?
I'd take the shot - in fact, it may already be too late in many leagues. But I definitely think LaPorta is the real thing.
do you purposefully make inflammatory remarks just to make this more entertaining, or do you really believe what you say? try this: derek lowe will have a better year than tim lincecum.
I really do believe what I say. And you are free to disagree with me. One of us will be right, and one of us will be wrong. I'm not keeping score, but if you are, that says more about you than it does about me. Oh, snap! No he didn't!
Sheer economics..You know Dellucci's going to get the call..
I do. And yet, if you want LaPorta later, you still may have to strike now. Not everyone gets that memo.
If you don't pay for saves at the draft, you might pay for it later. I have watched Hanrahan, Marmol, and Rodney destroy my stats and get no saves. Do I keep picking up junk closers or go for the solid ratio middle relievers? If so, could you throw out a few good names?
Clay Condrey and Andrew Bailey come to mind.
werth or choo, werth or fowler. which one huh? huh?
Werth over Choo - Fowler only if you need steals.
What do you think about Hamilton's injury? He was already starting slow, are you buying?
It's hard to buy with the injury being something without a clear "expiration date" - if he gets healthy, he rebounds immensely, but that's a big "if"
Slowey over Scherzer and Cueto...no question right?
That's a big affirmative.
Harden over Sabathia??? Please explain.
Neither one has pitched too great so far, but I think Sabathia, by virtue of pitching in that new Yankee Stadium will not be able to lower his ERA enough or win enough games to pass Harden in overall value.
Wandy or Brett Myers?
I was just offered Holliday and Texiera for Dunn and Lincecum....what are your thoughts?
I'd stand pat since the dropoff from Lincecum to the replacement probably isn't enough to even the deal out for you.
Is Nady droppable or do you see him having some fantasy impact when he returns?
I'd not stick around to find out, ya dig?
That's all the time for today. Thanks for all your Q's in both chats. It's been fun. Someone else takes the helm tomorrow, but I'll see you all the next time on Villa Allegre!
