Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Have you recovered from another wild afternoon at Dega? I'm sure you folks have some thoughts. So let'em rip.

David Fuller (Marion, NY)

Terry, why no penalties for the 83 and 11 for passing the 09 under the yellow line during the race? This is why there needs to be new officials who aren't so inconsistent.

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

The problem is the yellow line rule, which in my opinion, needs to be eliminated. My column that will run later today adresses this subject. The boundary is causing more accidents than it prevents.

Ed, Ft Lauderdale

To prevent another Dega disaster, Jimmy seems to be proposing bulldoze the banking and Chad said to "install a chicane on the backstretch". Are you suprised by those radical recommendations from two of the most conservative guys in Nascar?

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

Not surprised, but neither of those things are going to happen. The truth is most fans love this stuff. Our poll yesterday proves it. People don't want NASCAR to change a thing at Dega. And NASCAR officials said Monday they aren't reconfiguring the track.

Cody, Lugoff, SC

Hey Terry, I think Brad did nothing wrong on the last lap. Do you agree, or do you think it was cheap?

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

I agree totally, and so does Crl Edwards. Thats' the problem. No one did anything wrong, but the big wreck happened anyway because of the yellow line rule.

Justin Behling (Boyceville, WI)

I like how Dale Jr. didn't seem to care after the race that Brad Keselowski almost took him out along with half of the field.

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

Brad did exactly what he was supposed to do and Junior knows it.

Greg, South Bend, IN.

Hey Terry, I got into a little disagreement with my buddy about whos "fault" Sundays crash was. I said Carl should not have come back down because Brad had his nose in there. His was there is a gentelmens agreement that you don't have the spot until your tire is up the door of the car your passing. So he said it was Brad's fault because he wasn't up to Carl's door. Any truth to that and your what's your Opinion? Keep up the great work.

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

No on was at fault. Carl was blocking and didn't see Brad. Brad held his position and didn't move. He couldn't without going below the yellow line. Tha'ts the problem.

Ted, Richmond

Seems like Kenseth cost Kyle the Nationwide win by blocking and Burton ran over Kyle and took Kyle out of contention on Sunday, plus Harvick stole Kyle's truck win at Martinsville. When will we see Kyle start paying back these guys with some of their own medicine?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

You're kidding right? You don't think Kyle has done these things in the past?

George, FL

Who's gonna win @ Richmond? Any clear favourite for the championship.

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

Junior and Kyle should be the show at Richmond after what happend last year when Kyle punted him. Long way to go for the championship, but it's the usual suspects _ Johnson, Gordon, Kyle Busch, Edwards. The one surprise contender is Kurt Busch.

Scott Lugoff,SC

Any cause for concern after 2 bad races for 24?

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

Dega doesn't count. Just got caught in one of the big wrecks. No concern at all. They're fine.

ray gordon reid ashbourn va 20147

QUESTION TO TERRY BLOUNT AT 2.2OPM HI TERRY WHOS YOUR PICK FOR RICHMOND SATURDAY NIGHT

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

Kyle Busch

Cody, Lugoff, SC

How is Tony Stewart so high in the standings? It doesnt seem like he is doing too well this year, but when i look at standings he is in top 5?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

Stewart has six top 10s in nine races. I'd say that's pretty darn good.

Patrick (Springfield, MA)

Big packs are blamed for some Dega wrecks, but just 4 cars were close to the action at the finish...I agree the yeallow line rule is not helping- its the speed and nature of the tracks that cause problems.

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

It's not the speed. They go just as fast at Texas and Atlanta. It's no throttle response from the plates and racing so close together, having to push each other to make passes.

Devin (Johnson City TN)

I have yet to see anyone other than Ray Evernham or Dale Jarrett Yesterday put the blame on the drivers. Like Ray said yesterday, these drivers have 3 pedals in the car, and they dont always have to use the one on the far right. Fact of the matter is we saw Brad block Jr into the grass with 100 to go, KB drive 5 lanes on the backstrecth and through the corners trying to stay out front, and Carl turn left when someone was under him.. This is not a track or a speed issue. Drivers do not have to bump draft and they do not have to block...they choose to.

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

They have to bump draft if they want to win. And they have to try to block if they want to win.

Saul (San Diego)

Do you think what happen Sunday is a repeat of last year's race, were Stewart came down to block and the other car (can't remember who) unlike Sunday, yielded to Stewart drove below the yellow line to avoid the crash?

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

Yes. the other driver was regan Smith. He moved under the line and made the pass, but was penalized for passing below the line. Keselowski wasn't going to make the same mistake.

Cory, Geneva, IL

Terry, I don't get the yellow line issue. If Brad could pass there, wouldn't Carl have just run him into the grass? It isn't as if he would say "Oh well, he got a run on me below the line, I will let him go."

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

The boundary means the leader has less space he has to block. Without it, he has to make a choice. Brad would has gone left to avoid Carl's move and might have passed him on the apron. Or maybe they still wuld have wrecked, but it would have happened lower on the tyrack and probably kept Edwards from getting into the catch fence.

Linda, Denver

So that is the key to winning at Dega? Stay above the yellow line and run over the car in front of you?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

That's right, if the guy in front is blocking. But it wouldn't go down that way without the line boundary.

Larry (MI)

With the win on Sunday I don't see how Hendrick or Dale Jr will be able to convince Brad to spend another year in the Nationwide series. Do you think Brad signs with another Cup team or do you see JR Motorsports moving up to Cup next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

Brad will run in Cup somewhere next year. JR Motorsports moving up depends on sponsorship. Penske likes Brad and so does Hendrick if Martin doesn't return.

Derek (MO)

Dale came in second, is he close to the first win? And is there pressure since i think i amright in saying heis theonly team meber to not have won

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

Thats' right, but don't read too much into Dega. How you run there means nothing at the non plate races. However, his pit crew flawless Sunday and Jr. didn't make a mistake on pit rad. That's a real improvement, And he going to a tarck where he usually runs well.

Shawn (NY)

If they had given Regan Smith the win last year this accident likely would not have happened. They let Bodine pass below the yellow on the last lap in the trucks at Daytona a few years ago and then decided not to allow it when Smith did it. That truck finish was 3 wide below the yellow for the win too.

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

If you don't have he yellow line rule, you dont have to make these judgment calls.

Alex, NC

Hey Terry- anything new you can tell me about Martin Truex and where he might end up next year? If not for any other reason, he needs to go somewhere else just to change his luck.

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

I did a rumor central item on this that will run today. His best option probably is Gibbs. He said at Dega he will make a decision soon.

Larry (MI)

I think Dale Jr needs to run more Nationwide races. He got his pit road mistake out of the way on Saturday when he missed his box again. What do you think?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

Maybe he learned something from that, but he isn't going to run a lot of NW events. I applaud his for that. One less Cupper in NW is a good thing.

Aron (Las Colinas, Tx)

Is it me, or does Carl not realize he's being paided MILLIONS of dollars to do a job that has the potential to end his life. I realize he was frustrated after the race, but i found his quote that went national out of line. Your Thoughts.

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

I don't blame him a bit. Guys say stuff in the heat of the moment. Stewart had a similar quite a few years ago at Daytona. the driver hate plate racing. That won't change.

Joe, St. Louis

With the truck race postponed until yesterday why didn't Kyle go up there and race to protect his points lead?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

Kyle is not racing for the Truck title. Unfortunately, he is racing for th NW title. Kyle should worry about Cup and only Cup.

Greg,

Terry, I think the scariest crash of the day was Robby Gordon going straight into the wall. They said a few hundred feet down it would have been bad cause there was no safer barrier. Is Dega going to install the safer barrier all the way down the inside now? I thought Nascar mandated that after Jeff's crash last year?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

Not mandated, but many tracks have added the barrier on the inside walls. It isn't cheap, but think the SAFER Barrier should be in front of any contrete wall at every track.

jeff (indianapolis,Indiana)

Being raised here in indianapolis I've seen it all to the spin and win to last years tire joke. Sunday was scary and do you feel that nascar the next time in talladaga will make adjustments the the restricter plate? I feel lets just get rid of it all together.

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

They'll never let the cars run without the plates. They would reach speeds in excess of 230 mph, greatly increasing the likelihood of a car getting into the grandstands. NASCAR will have smaller holes in the plate for the next event, but that won't change much.

Bob, Philadelphia

Gordon was complaining about his back again at Dega. Isn't he really risking permanent injury where another crash like Vegas or Pocono could put him in a wheelchair for life? If his back is in such bad shape shouldn't he retire now?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

His back isn't that bad. Its muscle spasms, not a spinal problem. But a crash certainly could make the spasms more painful.

Jeff (East Bay, CA)

After Newman's strong showings the past few weeks and making it up to #13 in the points do you see him making the chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

It's possible, but it won't be easy. Some guys outside th Chase, like Mark Martin, also are trying to get in. And of course, someone has to fall out. But Newman is encouraged about his chances.

AC (Chicago, IL)

Something weird to me at Dega this week. Seems 2 cars can get togoether and run away from a pack of cars even if that pack is in line. Any ideas why.

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Excellent point. Two cars now are faster than a long line of cars, which wasn't true in the old car. But the shape of this car and the way the bumpers lne up make two cars way faster when they get out in clean air. It gives driver an option they didn't have before.

TC of KY

So Terry, what cup seat will Brad K be in next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

He doesn't know, but my guess is he will be at Penske unless Martin retires.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Hey Terry, How do you think the crew swaps between Harvick and Mears will work out???? Will we see any improvement form either of them????

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

I think we might see an improvement on Harvick's side. He has worked with Gil Martin in the past. I think Harvick needs a spark and this might be it.

Race fan

So Terry, does Brad K have what it takes for cup next year? He hasn't done well in the 25 car.

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

Brad is better than at least 10 of the guys racing in Cup right now. And he's getting better all the time. The boy has some skills.

Sam Hornish

Hey I've actually shown life the past two weeks!

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

But I bet you're still going back to Indy car next year fake Sam.

bryan (ky)

Over/Under: 2 wins for Stewart-Haas racing the rest of the year.

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

I'd say 2 is about right.

Tek (Milwaukee)

Did Randy Moss just get his first Nascar win on Monday? That's awesome. I hope it encourages another big name sports player to start up a team. The more money, the more competitive trucks, the better the racing I say!

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

Randy did get that win, with Skinner, and it is good for the sport. The more team owners that win the better.

Jason (St. Louis, MO)

Do you think Montoya will be leaving once his contract is up too?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

No. JPM loves NASCAR and he's staying.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

Every week I keep thinking Reutimann is going to falter, and every week he sticks around. Can he make the chase? Or even win a race this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

He can make th Chase. Winning a race is iffy. But DR is a smart driver. He knows how to stay out of trouble and not hurt himself. And MWR equipment is way better this season.

Race fan

Terry, does there need to be a change at Dega? If so, what's your thoughts on how?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

The only realistic option for change is eliminating the yellow line rule. NASCAR isn'g going to reconfigure the track or use smaller engines. So there's only so much you can do.

Maxine, St. Louis

Kurt Busch seems to be controlling the championship the way Gordon and Johnson have done it in the past. Do you expect a 4 way horse race between Kurt, Kyle, Jimmy and Jeff?

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

I certainly wouldn't count Carl out. And Tony might play into this is they keep improving.

tommy (Europe)

Do you think that nascar will ever make it over seas?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

Not in the foreseeable future. The expense of doing it is huge and the sked has too many races already.

TC

Hey Terry, is NASCAR/ Goodyear going to find a good enough tire combo by INDY?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

That's a great question. I don't think anyone knows at this point, and that's a little scary. But to Goodyear's credit, they are testing like crazy at IMS to find a solution. If may not be perfect, but we won't see the debacle that happened last year.

Justin Behling (Boyceville, WI)

I thought Tony Stewart was supposed to be the favorite. What happened to him?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

Nothing, just Dega being Dega. You end up in the wrong place at the wrong time and you can have a bad day.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Terry, who will drive the #34 while Andretti is at Indy next month????

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Don't know, but they hinted it will be a name everyone recognizes. Ward Burton would be a cool choice.

Matt (New York)

hey terry when do you think Dale JR. will follow in his dad's footsteps?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Never, and no one should expect him to. No one can do that.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Isn't it about time NASCAR prohibits and penalizes blocking, like the IRL does?

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

Not a bad idea, but it's a much tougher thing to enforce in plate race at Dega and Daytona because it's such a subjective call with so many cars so close together.

Matt (Chicago)

Hey Terry, any chance we see Kyle Petty in a car (or truck) this season?

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

Depends on how far in advance you mean, but I'll say Justin Allgaier.

Jason (St. Louis, MO)

I am a Jr fan, do you think HMS will make changes to the 88 team this year??

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

Not unless things get really bad in the summer months.

richard (MD)

What do you expect to happen to NASCAR'S saftey rules after sundays crash?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

Nothing much. They say they will get tougher on penalties about blocking and aggressive driving, but weve heard all that before.

Jarrell P. Houston, TX

At what point will Richard Petty Racing run the new engines that the Penske teams have had some success with this year?

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

The plan was to run them after 10 races, and Richmond is the 10th event. But I don't know if they are sticking to that plan.

Terry Blount
  (3:04 PM)

I've got to run folks. I will close with this. Today is a very dark day in NASCAR. David Poole, one of the top journalists in the history of the sport, passed away today. He was a dear friend for many years. Please keep his family in your prayers. Peace.
