Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Life does not get much better than this. I saw Springsteen in Atlanta. The NBA playoffs. Great training sessions. let's get rolling. One thing though-it's up to you to submit some great comedic lines, I'm still too Bossed up. "It ain't no sin to be glad you're alive".

Justin Miami

Why is Michael Beasley just awful as of late when he was playing like a beast at the closing of the regular season?

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

The playoffs are really not an extension to the season. They are wholly independent.

Patrick (Chicago)

Need an unbiased opinion (can't answer this myself), was Rondo's foul flagrant?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Without doubt. No jury would find him innocent.

Nick (Toronto)

Hey David, how would you rank the following prospects: James Harden, Tyreke Evans, DeMar DeRozan, Earl Clark, Evan Turner.

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

I don't know some of those guys. I do know that Earl Clark is learning how to be a beast.

Raymond (CA)

The Lakers are killing independent Kobe!

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Not exactly.

Dave (Vancouver, BC)

Thoughts on your boy Jo Noah's playoff performance so far?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Eaxactly what you are seeing. Beastly effort at all times. Afraid of no one.

Eric (Orlando, FL)

Barry: Rob, top five musical crimes perpetuated by Stevie Wonder in the '80s and '90s. Go. Sub-question: is it in fact unfair to criticize a formerly great artist for his latter day sins, is it better to burn out or fade away? Just wanted to put that out there- glad to see the magic show up last night.

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

One of my top 5 movies on that Facebook test.

steve (philly)

first: the boss is still great i saw him yesterday in philly and it was awesome...second: the lakers defense doesn't look like championship material. do you think that could be the deciding factor in a finals matchup against the cavs or dou you expect them to play better defense once they have to play the cavs?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

It's a great question. Are they able to turn it on for good? Or are they too much like some of the Detroit teams.

Josh (Philly)

Do you agree that Calathes would be a good fit for the Sixers? They are desparately lacking in 3-point shooting and they are going to need a PG if they don't resign Andre Miller.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I've suggested the same thing many times. He's the best passer in the draft and a terrific shooter.

Hadz (Kent, OH)

Why does ESPN let Skip Bayless make a living off making zero good arguments and hating Lebron? Its an embarrassment to the network.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Why are you watching him then?

Jarrett (greenville, sc)

Would you rather have kobe bryant or lebron james right now? I would rather have lebron

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Me too.

Nick (Tampa)

Dejuan Blair wants to focus on his quickness, agility, & jumper. Will this be the focus when you work with him?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

To some degree, yes.

Jack (NY)

What are the odds that the Bulls-Celtics ends up being the best first round series of all time?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

0.0 Let's not forget that there are two #6 or 7 seeds doing battle here. Boston without KG and Powe does not win 50 games.

Mo Ginsberg

David - I need your help. In 87-88 MJ avg'd 35 ppg, 6 assists, 3+ steals, 1.5 blks, shot 54%, etc, etc, etc. Was named Def Player of the Year and league MVP. He did this in 23 team league. He was at or near Lebron's current age. Bulls didn't even make the conf. finals despite this. The problem I need help with is: The hype machine surrounding today's best players and and these very playoffs. I feel like I am watching an inferior product lately. A watered down league. Dare I even say lesser competitors? While there a few competitive series going on presently, I feel as if they are only compelling b/c the teams aren't very good. There appears to be at LEAST 12 teams in the playoffs with no chance of winning AND no transcendant player. Please point me to towards the light David. When one of the "best" players in the world has their team trounced by 58 at home in the playoffs in a must win game - I feel a bit mislead about what we are all "witnessing".

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

That's why these stat heads can help us. We know that Wade and LBJ and CP3 are performing at amazing levels. The game is about 10 dudes on the court at once, not just CP3.

Christopher, Germany

Are you surprised (maybe even impressed) by the Mavs performance in the first-round or are you sadly shaking your head when thinking about the Spurs. Still can't believe Timmy is out in round one.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Very impressed by the Mavs. Very sad for the Spurs. I love watching them play.

LBJ (Akron)

I am so bored!!! Better Seinfeld scene; George: I went and saw Titanic....that old lady, she was just a liar? Jerry: And a bit of a tramp if you ask me. Or And whats the deal with ovaltine? The jar is round. The mug is round. They should call it round-tine. Banya: Gold Jerry!!

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I never saw Titanic. So I'll go with "gold Jerry, gold".

Steiny (NYC)

If the Spurs had kept Scola, would they be contenders?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Probably.

Jeremy (Cleveland)

If a players shot is ugly but working, do you still change it?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

No, but I might suggest some slight tweaks.

Cory (Ohio)

Who would be a better match for the cavs next round the heat or the hawks?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

I'd lean to Miami, simply because of the Wade factor.

Luke(South Dakota)

Hasheem Thabeet a good fit for the wolves?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

No.

Greg (Chicago)

I think the reason you've been hating on the celtics this morning is because your pissed that they beat guys that you've trained. It's ok David, everything will be alright.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

On the contrary. I'm impressed that they are doing it without those guys. But it's not the best first round series at all.

aaron (la)

have you read Proust?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

I'm typically not smart enough to appreciate authors like that.

Stuart (Chicago)

Too bad the Bulld didnt have Tyrus in for the last play. He would have had a dunk and one if he had been there instead of Miller.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

You mean Tyrus is much faster than Miller?

Dan(Chicago)

Is Garnett the most classless player you have seen? He is not even playing and everytime the camera is on him he is shouting F bombs at the Bulls bench and getting in Bulls players faces and staring them down. It is great to be intense but good lord, grow up. What a great role model.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I fu#@*# love it.

Greg (Chicago)

Face it, Thorpe. You're just a hack who got lucky and won the lottery with Kevin Martin. It's like your best friend Patrick Ewing claiming credit for developing Yao and Dwight. These guys would have happened anyway.

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

No truer words have ever been written. But, you may want to add a few more names next to Kevin's.

aaron (la)

Mr. Thorpe you need to give yourself some credit and have some more self esteem. You come across as very intelligent and handsome. I'm sure you can appreciate Proust.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Oh, I'm the most confident guy you know. And I'm confident that I would struggle to enjoy Proust. But thanks!!

Dwight(Orlando)

Can we beat the Cavs in a best of seven series?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Not now-C Lee is out I think for awhile. Not sure of the details yet.

Rhett (Toronto)

Can you tell us more about Earl Clark? I love his game and I can see Colangelo targeting him at No. 9 since he has mismatch potential and he's a freak athlete.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

He's a lot like Tyrus, Blatche-super talented but didn't really undertand how to play to his strengths. I'm hoping we'll change that.

ryan (cali)

Also check out all the replays of Ray Allen's big shots, chances are you'll find big baby setting the most illegal screens you've ever seen in your life!! come on

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

More importantly, Perkins pushes more than elementary school kids.

Broad Street Brian

Not as painful as a D12 elbow though.

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Ouchy.

Kevin (NJ)

Regardless of Rondo's foul being flagrant or not, Brad Miller still should have hit his FTs. Wouldn't you agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Hard to when he kept touching his lip.

matt (sfo)

if you could change one thing about the NBA, what would it be? follow up, blazers in seven?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Tough question. Probably eliminate any defensive restrictions.

Joe (NY)

Can the Magic win game 6 without Howard and Lee??

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Highly doubtful.

Broad Street Brian (PHILLY)

Waiting for your chats is like drawing and offensive foul. A long wait, a body blow thud and then oddly, a feeling of accomplishment. Thanks for expanding my basketball knowledge. Albeit, sometimes painfully.

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Maybe thes best compliment I've ever read.

Joe (Billerica, MA)

Bunch of cry babies from Chicago like it hasn't been an equally physical series on both sides. I could name 10 calls off the top of my head that were blwon in favor of Chicago. Thorpe needs a tissue.

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Joe, quit being a moron. Pushing is good! Boston is way more physical, and they should be proud of it.

Rich (Sacramento, CA)

Thorpe! Love the chats- Knowing our franchise's luck, let's say the Kings pick 4th. Griffin, Rubio, and Hill (maybe) are off the board. Who would you go with?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I'm growing increasingly convinced that Jrue Holiday is incredibly special. As in top 5 talent in this draft.

jared (New York, NY)

How impressive has Dahntay Jones been in the playoffs? I remember watching him at Duke, he was always a great athlete. Is he an elite on the ball defender?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Maybe just one step below elite. I'm really glad for him.

Evan (Detroit)

Illegal screens - lol! Noah and Rose are the kings of the illegal pick and roll.

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Every team sets lots of illegal screens.

Gordon (Cleveland, Ohio)

Will Dwight Howard get a suspension?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

I think so.

JRod (Sullivan, IL)

Seriously we let Paul Pierce make the exact same shot three times in a row to end the game. Can't scouting show you that is his shot... How about doubling him with Allen out or at the least making him go left? Looked like horrible horrible coaching to me...

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

I think that when everyone suggested I was crazy for praising Noah's effort to block the shot cleanly in game one is now reconsidering. Can't be afraid to make a play. Ask Rondo and Miller.

Chad(Wisconsin)

Last chat someone asked you if you ever thought Melo could be a MVP winner. Well do you want to change your answer after watching him play great all around basketball this series not forcing anything, passing the ball, and actually play good almost great defense. He was even yelling and showing some desire on the defensive end.

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

I've always felt that Melo could win a Finals MVP, but not one for the season.

Kris (Simi Valley, CA)

A mere 25 minutes into this chat, and Vinny Del Negro has burned all of his timeouts.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

And left Rose in to intentionally foul, even though he has 5.

Adam (Charleston, SC)

Jrue Holiday at #5? Did you see the way he was pushed around against Villanova's guards?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

So you are suggesting that Wayne Ellington is the #5 pick-after all he had a tremendous Final 4. Hey, is Lee Humphrey in the NBA? He killed everyone in the NCAA tournament.

Phil (Chicago)

Most things I read say Earl Clark will be a 3 in the pros. He seems like he's more of a 4 in today's NBA to me. What do you see him as? Some of both?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

4. 4. 4.

Neil Auricchio Atlantic City, NJ

Lawrence Frank is back!! Should I be happy?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Yes!

Ashley: (Indianapolis)

Do you see Brandon Rush starting next season for the Pacers?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

He finished well, so he's got a real chance.

Sam (Atlanta)

Hi Coach, I've followed your career for years. It's amazing that you have progressed to getting lottery guys like Earl Clark and Jrue Holiday in your gym. How did it happen? I'm looking for inspiration.

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

I'd like to think that people appreciate good teaching. But my guess is that the weather here is nice and people like my staff a great deal.

Austin

Hey David - What are your thought on Yi? Was he just overhyped or do you think he will ever devlop into a starting caliber PF. I mean, he cant even catch the ball cleanly....

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

He clearly lost his confidence. He has a big upside still.

Phil (Chicago)

In reference to Earl Clark being a 4, why do people want to peg guys as playing one position smaller than what they should? In today's NBA, shouldn't it now be more of the opposite with all of the smallball being played and teams taking advantage of speed and quickness?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Yes.

Dave (San Diego)

If you could do the 08 draft over, who went too high or too low? Top 5?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

I've written enough on that class this year. But Lopez is the obvious answer.

Jon (Mad-town)

The story yesterday should've been the Bulls blowing an 11 point lead with Ray Ray out of the game... How'd they let that happen?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

I agree. Not sure.

John (Portland, OR)

Yao or Howard? Who would you rather have?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Dwight.

Jordan (Chino Hills,CA)

Thorpeezee, what's up with Brad Miller's underhand scoop layup attempt. He deserves to get smacked in the face for that, agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Done and done.

Marcos (Wellington, FL)

Scola is great player that goes unnoticed, because his style is boring (like Duncan), but don't you think he is the best player for HOU in that series? At least the most productive

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

He's amazing. Can play for any team in any system.

Brandon (Los Angeles)

Can you extrapolate one why Clark will be a 4 and not a 3? Or are you just trying to help his draft stock because there's not a lot of big man depth in this draft.

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Just stopped laughing. You really think NBA execs, who spend 6-7 figures a year scouting, and countless hours evaluating them, are going to pay strict attention to my chats? Thise that trust my eye call me, those that don't don't.

Curtis (Houston)

Buy or Sell: The Rockets won't choke and have another 1st Round exit?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Buy.

Commissioner Stern

Should I raise the age requirements on the draft to two years?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

No, drop it to 18 and then add a 2 or 3 year ban if they go to school.

James (San Jose,Ca)

How ridiculous has Rajon Rondo been? 5 straight monster games

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Wow.

Kantad (NYC)

Dave, do you think Anthony Randolph will have a breakout Sophmore season, even with Nellie as his coach?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

I think he'll get every chance to.

Rick (Chi)

Do you have a coaching clinic as well? We're collecting a fund for VDN. Is there hope for him (like Mike Brown), or are the Bulls doomed?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

I like Hollinger's thoughts on this. Players get better (sometimes). So can coaches.

Brandon (Los Angeles)

FYI, re: Clark-- I meant by making him a 4 in your workouts, not by saying he's a 4 in your chat. What part of his skill set makes him better suited to play the 4?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Oh, ok. Players that long and athletic need to make more plays at the rim.

James, Brooklyn

Need a good basketball read. Any suggestions?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Moneyball. It's baseball, but will help understand modern day scouting.

Marc Sydney Australia

Thorpedo, Love the chats Now that my beloved Pistons are long gone, and Uncle Joe will start the clan out, who's the best bet to keep - Rip or Tay? Or get rid of them both?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

i like Prince more.

mike indianapolis

How good can Curry be in the NBA

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Really good. I'd look at him at #5 as well.

Jon (mad-town)

Bulls need a tough-guy/enforcer on their roster. Who's available this offseason?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Dejaun Blair. But he's likely gone before Bulls pick.

Lefkohoma, Greece

Have you ever worked with European players? How is it different than working with American guys?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

I've worked with thousands, here and there. Very little difference, except for footwork habits because the refs call things differently.

Phil (Chicago)

Since the Bulls have played so well without Deng, and he doesn't seem to really fit their style of play, so you see him being the centerpiece of a trade package this summer?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

It makes sense to me, but I've heard that the Bulls front office and owner love him.

Perez Burrows (G.B Bahamas)

Hey David: You did a work-out on Nick Calathes. Whats the skinny on him and is #31(Sac) too high of a pick for him? And also, how does this look for a coaching staff for Sac huh? Mo Cheeks Paul Silas Terry Stotts Henry Bibby Shareef Abdu Rahim

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

He's the closest thing to Steve Nash I've ever seen. Period. You have to see him to believe. Incredibly crafty but very fast with the ball.

Adam (Philly)

wouldnt kirk hinrich be the perfect andre miller replacement for the sixers?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

No-not the same kind of passer. But he's very good in his own way.

Jason (Bmore)

After a player has trained with you and received your tutelage, do you then track their stats moving fwd on what you worked on with them, to essentially rate/score/work on your effectiveness as a coach/teacher?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Of course.

Peter (Denver, CO)

How will the Mavs match up with Denver? K-Mart can guard Dirk and Dahntay on Howard. I just dont see a chance for the Mavs

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Never doubt a team on a roll.

Joe (New York City)

If the Bulls package Deng this offseason like it's been suggested, who are possible suitors? Would Toronto be interested in Deng and Tyrus for Bosh?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

i'm not sure about destinations. I think Toronto will try so hard to keep Bosh.

Mike (Chicago, IL)

Thorpe please answer this question, your opinion. Game six Chicago, same miller-rondo play happens, except this time its tyrus smacking Rondo, Flagrant or non flagrant call fouled?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

I already said that to Mike Moreau-Noah or Tyrus get the flagrant call.

Monta Ellis (Cali)

Kirk Hinrich would look good playing next to me, no?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Yes he would.

Seth (MA)

dave great response to the "classless" garnett question i laughed out loud. right on!

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Bottom line-KG gets it. Off the field, former Bucs LB Derrick Brooks is a saint. On the field, he's a monster. What's wrong with that?

Phil (Chicago)

I've seen tons of point guards mentioned as possible 1st rounders this year. After Rubio which guys would you rate highest from what you've seen of Curry, Maynor, Lawson, Flynn, Calathes, Collison, etc?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

All can be special, depending on the system.

Jason (New York)

I find myself compulsively watching old games on youtube to get a fix of Jordan or Bird. Is there any player you miss watching?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Magic.

JB (Portland)

Think Dumars might make a run at Deng this offseason? Would he be a good fit with the Pistons?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Yes and yes.

Mike indianapolis

Can the Pacers get better by moving Troy Murphy?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Depends on who's in the deal.

Lefkohoma, Greece

Why do European point guards tend to be more pass first as opposed to American pg's? Which way do you prefer?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Neither. I like either-based on overall personnel.

Nick (Tampa)

I saw Calathes scrimmaging last summer at the UF Bball camp and I was amazed at his ability to find open teammates. He seemed to be a step ahead of everyone!

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Dude broke the all-time assist record ofr one season TWICE in 2 years. With one pro-Speights-who was there for just one season.

James, Brooklyn

As a coach, what was your defensive philosophy?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Deny everything ballside, and don't help from that side.

Andy (LA)

What's your take on Ricky Rubio? Will he be a top 10 pg in the nba from the start?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

looks to be special-but may need a few years to ascend to top 10 status.

Paul (Denver)

The problem most people have with Garnett is that it's not consistent with his past behavior. He's evolving into a thug.

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

I disagree. It's about intensity and desire.

Jake (SLC)

Can the Jazz be contenders with Millsap at the 4 instead of Boozer?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

I don't think so, because who would take Millsap's spot?

Mike indianapolis

Is Brandon Jennings going to be a lottery pick. Did his move backfire

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

He's probably where he always was.

TD (chicago)

GREAT Basketball Read = Miracle of St. Anthony's

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

I need to read that for sure.

Jon (Mad-town)

The Bulls could use Millsap, the Jazz could use Deng, if only there was some way to work this out...

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Hmmm...

Pristo, NYC

I am running a league with 7-9 year olds. Should 7 year olds really be playing? If yes, what should I focus on in games?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Dribbling and running and catching. 8 foot hoops and mostly layups.

Thibault,France

Funny thing about your 'Melo Finals MVP comment: You said the same about Kevin Martin in a Q&A about a year ago. " In terms of MVP, I think he's much more likely to get MVP of a championship series than he is MVP of the league" Are Martin and Anthony similar players in that regard?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

I've written it about Roy too. Some guys are just built to be bigger stat stuffers for an entire year than others.

Frank (Yonkers, NY)

Thorpo, I started reading your chats around the beginning of the season. For about the first chat-and-a-quarter, I thought what the hell is it with these one line, one word answers. And then it seeped in: this is an exceptional use of the medium. You know, it's the only chat where I have to bother reading questions to understand the answers. If you're able to apply the same understanding of a situation's opportunities and limitations to coaching basketball, the players you coach are fortunate, indeed.

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

Now that is the best compliment I've ever read!! Thanks to everyone and see you all next week. Be safe!!
