Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:53 AM)

Let's do this thing.

benjamin, brevard, nc

do you think the jets drafting to QB was a bad move?

Matt Williamson
  (11:55 AM)

No. Not at all. They obviously believe that Sanchez is a franchise-type signal caller. They obviously had a huge need at that position...the most important position on the field. They didn't overspend to get him. In fact, I thought it was somewhat of a bargain. Great move. My only question with Sanchez and the move in general is his ability to cut the winds and handle the weather in New York late in the year and in the playoffs with his not-tremendous arm strength. We shall see on that. Otherwise, loved it. They have become a real aggressive organization.

Brian (Michigan)

After the draft are you going to temper your criticism of Green Bay's switch to the 3-4? Please say no.

Matt Williamson
  (11:57 AM)

Knew this would come up. I am going to be honest on the subject. I NEVER expected GBay to land someone like Raji, who if you have been paying attention, is someone that I really think is an elite player. So, in that regard-and adding Matthews was a fine move as well-I do think the switch will go better than I have been saying. Still, I certainly do not condone it one bit. Just think, if they would have stuck with the old system and still added Raji. Get my drift? Still a bad move and rookies take time, but DDay helped their cause. No question about that.

Paul (Albany, OR)

Dang, Brian beat me to it. And without knowing your reply, it seems Green Bay did very well draft wise. If the first rounders step in right away, and Barnett comes back, the Pack may not be so defensively challenged after all. Your thougths? Thanks.

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

Still don't love their DEs for a 3-4 however...but yes, obviously they are in better shape than I imagined pre-draft. The nice thing about Matthews is he is more LB than DE, while Kampman is obviously more DE than LB. Complements him well. Along the GBay draft theme, don't be surprised if TJ Lang replaces M Taushcer at RT adaquately.

James (Indy)

Matty!!!!! Good times here in Indy bro. Pens and Hawks advance to the second round, and the Colts finally got some beef at DT!! Do you think Donald Brown could be exceptional here?

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

I do. Excellent fit. FF players-take notice. D Brown could be in for a big year. Excellent situation for both player and team. I also like the beef that Indy added at DT. LONG overdue. Even the traditional Tampa 2 teams are getting away from small DTs. Just isn't working anymore. Wouldn't be shocked if Maola and T Taylor were starters by mid season.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)

I'm surprised Derek Anderson wasn't moved this weekend. Do you think Cleveland will just wait for an injury or a need at QB to try and raise Derek's value? I just can't see anyone but Quinn starting in 2009.

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

I still think one of those QBs will be moved. Not sold that DA will be the one on the outs though. Could be either. Adding Ratliff could have been a sign.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)

Are you buying into the Mangini/Kokanis strategy of bringing in "high character-high smarts" type players? The way I see the Browns draft, he basically dealt with this team like they were an expansion group all over again.

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

Sure seems that way. It appears to me that they are trying to change the culture, obviously bring in guys the are familiar with and in all honesty, take VERY few risks when it comes to personnel. I look at their draft and see a draft that is littered with picks that the decision makers appear scared to make a mistake. Very little upside in their picks, but the floor is high as well as a general rule of thumb. That is all well and good-but star power is needed and I can't say that I am slightest bit impressed with how Mangini handles the star players. It is great when NEng adds average/mediocre try hard good character guys to fill needs...but they have Tom Brady, Randy Moss and Richard Seymour. Get my drift?

Al Davis (Oakland)

I own this team...yeah I drafted the 4.3 Kid,whats his name again?...Bey Darrius-Heyward...thats it! What you novices don't understand is now I've got the Trinity the 4.3 Kid/Russell/McFadden..I'm on the fast track to the Superbowl!!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Keep telling yourself that

Robert (FL)

Matt, please tell me Miami did not draft Pat White as a future QB.

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

Perhaps. I thought that the pick was too high for White, but it is a VERY good team for him to go to. First off, they are the Wild Cat kings for whatever that is worth. And, they really need WR help. Also, Pennington probably will be on the move after this season and Henne will take over at QB. White can possibly contribute in one/all of those regards.

Jarrett Swinger ((Greenville, SC))

Do think that a nfl team will take a chance on michael vick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

No question in my mind

Brian (Michigan)

Why the outburst over the Lions not taking Maualuga? He overpursues alot and is susceptible to misdirection. Sounds like last years Lions.

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

I hear ya. Also, potential for off the field issues. I liked their first three picks. I have made it known that I prefer Sanchez to Stafford, but obviously there is a lot to like about Stafford. It could be argued that Det got the best QB, TE and S in this draft. Not a bad starting point. Still-this is a huge project.

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

MW, is 6-10 or 7-9 realistic for the Browns this year? I happen to like the draft and how the front office didn't feel pressured to make the sexy pick to please the fans.

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

They surely did not make a sexy pick. No question about that. 6-10 doesn't seem too far fetched as a best case scenerio, but....McShay is putting together a 2010 Mock Draft as we speak and asked me to build a draft order for the NEXT draft. I have your Brownies picking first overall. Obviously projecting 1-32 is a brutal chore right now, but I just don't have much faith. STL, DET and the AFC WEST minus SD also crossed my mind for that honor as well.

Jaketh23(Redlands, CA)

is Pat White the perfect Wildcat QB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

I suppose. Not a huge believer in the Wild Cat here in general going forward. I expect opposing DCoordinators to attack it like crazy next season and create a lot of big plays defensively. Still, White can throw, while guys like R Brown and McFadden are clearly runners first.

Rob (NJ)

How do you think Ziggy Hood will do as a 3-4 defensive end?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

It will be a learning experience, but he is in a great environment to learn the new techniques. Should be more or less a redshirt year for Hood, although I do expect to see him factoring in as an interior pass rusher on throwing downs.

Amanda H (Lebo)

At the combine, how do they evaluate QB arm strength? Do they use the jugs gun?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Good question. There is a radar type gun that they started using a few years back that reads the heat that QBs put on their balls. Otherwise, arm strength is just something that us scouts just look at in person or on tape and have our own opinions about for the most part. Not a difficult attribute to notice though.

Brian (Michigan)

Will the Lions let Culpepper throws bombs to Johnson for a year and sit Stafford?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

They should. I see Stafford as someone who will need time. Hold a clip board for a while. At least half of the season. Preferably his entire rookie year.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub prior to the draft the feeling was that the talent level wasn't that great & that 2010 should be a better class. Were you also surprised by the amount of trading that went on during the draft, especially those teams that traded away 2010 picks?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Yes....but the smarter teams benefited as a result. Too much impulse buying in my opinion. And yes, I did think this draft was very weak.

jkein (Indy)

Do you think Painter will actually replace Peyton down the line. Before the year everyone like him and the purdue flamed out. How good can he be under PM's wing

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

That is a tremendous spot for him to go to, but I see him someday replacing Sorgi, not Manning.

Scott (Champaign, IL)

Hey Matt! I'm glad Angelo at least made an attempt at getting Boldin with the Bears 2nd round pick! We got Iglasias instead...how do you think he will work out for us this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Wouldn't expect the world, but if everything goes perfectly, he might be a low end to decent #2.

Chris(Cali)

Your thoughts on the Cowboys draft??? Seems JJ was backwards thinking in this draft...Arent you suppose to draft position players and stick them on special teams? AND NOT DRAFT SPECIAL TEAMERS AND HOPE THEY CAN PLAY A POSITION!

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

I hated their draft. It looks like they drafted a lot of guys as a gift to the rest of the league, since all those draft picks will never make the Cowboys roster. I did really like the McGee and Mickens picks though.

Jeff, Mpls

What do you think about the Harvin pick to the Vikes, and will #4 be throwing him the ball at some point this season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Very combustable selection. You read that the Vikes are done taking chances on questionable character guys and they just can't lay off the great talent of Harvin. Think Childress is worried about his job? Could be. Still, Harvin very well could be exceptional in the dome up there. Favre to Minny? Yoy. I guess we do have to start dealing with such rumors. I think he is done, but...he still might actually be better than what they have for a season. Lets not talk about that subject anymore though.

chapel hill nc

Matt are surprised that no team has try to work out a trade for Jules Peppers?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

I suppose. BUT...remember, the Pats have a LOT of big picks next year and they didn't address their big OLB need. Could be...

JP (Pittsburgh)

Any thoughts on Mike Wallace? The guy can fly, and he'll be flanked by two Super Bowl MVP's.

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

He looks like Nate Washington to me. Outside the numbers speedster. But he also has return ability.

Jonathan (Dallas, TX)

About the 49ers draft. I know you probably loved the Crabtree pick, but was is a good move to trade for the 1st rounder next year. Also what should we expect from Glen Coffee?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Did love the Crabtree pick. Got the best player in the draft at #10. Also a good move to deal the pick. SF probably would love to have more of a quick fix, but it was a shrewd long term decision. Don't love Coffee. Strong, but doesn't move piles and is built more like a WR. I thought there were much better RBs on the board at that pick. McKillop, Davis and Pascoe were all solid picks and maybe they can coax something out of that LSU twosome.

tim minnesota [via mobile]

do you think eagles maclin will be a number one wideout

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

No, but I am very reluctant to use that term. He may end up being the Eagles best WR, but I only see about dozen (or so) true number one WRs in this league right now. Highly doubt that Maclin becomes one of them. Still-loved the pick.

Chad (Las Vegas)

What grade would you give the Saints? I still believe they should have traded down in the 1st and trading up to take a P is just a donk move.

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

Trading down for picks would have been great, but I can't fault them one bit for snagging Jenkins. The guy can play and I fully expect him to stabilize their secondary. Still, I don't see much of consequence from the rest of their picks.

James ( Avalon NJ )

Hello Matt! How big do you think the additions of J.Maclin and L.McCoy are going to be for the Eagles offensive attack?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Very big. Especially down the road. Love what Philly has done over the last week or so. That O is very good right now. In the 2010 mock draft that I talked about, I have them picking #31.

Luis (SB, CA)

Matt, I'm surprised more people aren't more enamored by the Bills and what they were able to do in this draft. thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Sorta. They obviously vastly improved their OL, but OT is still a BIG problem in my eyes. Maybin is fine, but I would have rather had Orakpo and I doubt that Maybin is an everydown player in 2009. Nelson was steal.

Reg (Ottawa)

Matt, who are the Eagles going to lose the SB to?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

The Pats

Brian (Michigan)

Over/Under on when Beanie Wells goes down with an injury? Week 4? He wasn't tough enough to play in college.

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

This is coming from a Michigan man? Should have known. But-I hear ya. His injury history really wasn't that terrible though. Didn't miss many games. I just don't think the guy runs as big and strong as he could. That bothers me. Good team for him to go to though, but he will never be a Bettis type.

Mike (Boca Raton)

do you think that new england has room on its roster for all of its picks?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Good point and probably not. Actually, absolutly not. Could see them sticking Tate on IR for the year and then getitng a very talented playmaker for the following season. Gotta think that the Long Snapper has the team made.

Bobby (Orlando FL)

Of course the Michigan guy says Beanie Wells wasn't tough enough. I remember him running through Michigan D's quite a bit. How do you see Jarron Gilbert filling in in Chi-Town? Possibly just coming on at DT or DE on passing situations?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Initially. The thing to remember in Chicago is that Marinelli is now the DL coach. I expect that DL to be vastly improved-starting with T Harris. Marinelli could mold Gilbert into a differnce maker.

James (Indy)

Sorry for the double-hit Matty, but what did you think about Denver taking K. Moreno at # 12??

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Hated it. Although I concede that he is best RB on the roster, I think he makes RB #15 or so. Torrain, Hillis, Buckhalter, Arrington, Jordan, etc. I get that these guys are far from stars, but then why sign them? Not sure that McDaniel knows what he is doing in terms of personnel. I saw Denver as having four to five spots just in their front seven that they needed to find a starter at...and they take a RB with average speed with their first pick? Yoy and double yoy. Along those lines and maybe you have already caught onto this, but in a draft that was lacking in talent, I saw the best front offices rise to the top and the suspect ones revealed for not having concise plans.

Sean (TR NJ)

What did you think of the Dolphins draft overall? Do you think we addressed what we needed or do you see more FA signings coming up?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

It is a start. DBs should be very much improved. If V Davis stays motivated, that pick will be great. If not, it won't. Guess that is now on the coaching staff. Didn't like the Turner or Hartline picks very much. Drafted a lot of small people-which is understandable considering their needs, but also rather un-Parcells like.

Don (Keydick, OH)

Am I really stuck with DA and Quinn?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

One should leave. But you do have Ratliff!....along with a huge slew of mediocre bottom of the roster players who played for Mangini in New York. Did I miss something with the Jets last year? We they a powerhouse or something?

Josh (Pittsburgh)

Did you pick the Pats just to motivate the Steelers? I'm going to pretend like you did so I don't have to stop coming to your chats...

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

Sounds like a plan. Was a tough call and I see Pittsburgh as an elite team as well. To me, PGH and NE are well above everyone else in the AFC and NYG and Philly are well above everyone in the NFC. Flip a coin.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Did you miss something with the Jets? I don't know, but I bet if Pennington were the QB, they would have made the playoffs.

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Perhaps. Favre killed that team-no question about that. But, they were not exactly the '27 Yankees or the Edmonton Oilers of the early '90s.

Luis (SB, CA)

Matt, finish the sentence: Three years from now, Darrius Hayward-Bey will be ____________

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Fast.

Steeler Nation

We took you in. We made you one of us. We let you live in our city. And this is how you reward us...The Patriots? THE PATRIOTS?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Easy big fella. Born here. In my blood. You didn't take me in. Still-remaining impartial. The Pats are stacked. The Steelers are exceptional as well.

Swinger ((Greenville SC))

Do u think that the 49ers will be a playoff team now since they have crabtree?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

No, but it wouldn't blow me away. Still see Sea and esp Zona as being stronger than SF in that division. Don't love the QB situation at all. D is middle of the pack.

AWAYNE (INDY)

Is the Raiders draft this year enough evidence for the NFL to take Al Davis to court and prove him mentally unfit to run the business?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Seems long overdue.

Demetric (Orlando)

Do you see my Falcons or any team giving Marvin Harrison a shot......cant believe he still a FA

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Curious what he wants for his contract. Would assume that a dome team would make most sense. ATL or even Indy could be the best fits. Still, he has to realize that he isn't what he once was. Does he wnat to come back when he knows he can't do what he once did?

James (Indy)

Is it officially time to for the NFL to step in and put Raider Al out to pasture?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Long overdue.

Shaun (Seattle)

Matt, what are your thoughts on the Seattle-Denver trade for next year's first rounder from the Broncos? Seems like a good deal for Seattle with the 2010 draft looking talented. Agree?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

No question. In my 2010 rankings, it ends up being a top 10 pick. I see Denver struggling. I also liked A Smith, but that is a steep price to pay for a CB with average speed who will wake up every morning and still be 5' 9". Just sayin'.

Matt Jones (Police Lineup)

Do you still believe in me? I have great measureables.

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

You do have great measurables and I must admit that I was smitten with you coming out of Arkansas. Also, shocked that you are not already a member of the Raiders or Cowboys. I bet it won't be long.

Luis (SB, CA)

Precog: With the first overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select: Usain Bolt, sprinter, Jamaica

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

I will send that to McShay for this project.

Tom (NY)

Any Chance the Bills land Levi Jones from Cinci? That would really solidify their O-Line?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Very risky. There is a reason that Cincy doesn't want him anymore. Injury issues. Declining play.

Robert (FL)

Maybe Denver can add Edgerrin to their backfield as their #16 back.

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Seems like the perfect fit.

Hal (New Orleans)

Thoughts on Leroy Hill? He'd look great as a Saint!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

That he would. Still would be surprised if he doesn't stay in Seattle, but yeah, you are right about that. I would be curious to see what kind of cap room everyone has right now though. Most must be quite strapped and now have draft picks to sign.

Sean (TR NJ)

From most people the Saints are getting low marks for their draft. What would you give them and why?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

I give the Jenkins pick an "A" and the rest of it a "D-"

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

I thought Edge to the Pack might work. Do you think the Colts might think about bringing him back and would Edge even consider returning there?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Would be a third string RB for Indy most likely and he doesn't help out on special teams. Could see him in NOrl though.

Joe (Lafayette Hill, PA)

What is your predicted standings and records for the NFC East this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

1. Philly barely edging out 2. NYG 3. Dal 4. Wash....best division in football

Matty Ice (The Burg, PA)

Matt being a Steelers fan this is hard to admit but the Giants had a great draft from the spot they drafted.

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Very solid organization that does it right. Goes back to my earlier point about the cream rising to the top in a weak draft. Still have a hunch that Nicks tuns into Braylon in the coming months. A Brown was a steal. Bomar was a very good calculated risk.

tom nj [via mobile]

Bolt would be a better fit for Chargers. Hee Hee

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Wow. Shouldn't have even posted that one. Keep your day job.

VK (DC)

Washington in last place? Explain.

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

The other three teams are better than the Skins.

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Okay, I will give you more. Really don't trust the Skins passing game at all. Washington isn't a bad team, but I am usually very hard on them and see them as an organization that is more flash than substance anymore. Maybe that is unfair, but do you expect that OL to hold up?

James (Indy)

Are you a big believer that it takes a good 2 or 3 years to truly "grade" draft classes for each team Matty? I know it has to feed the beast but these instant "grades" are pretty short-sighted.

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

No question about that. Very inexact science for sure as well. Dealing with human beings. A seventh rounder might out work everyone, get a break or two and turn into a star. Who are any of us to truly say? But, of course, it is the topic of the day and I think it is important to see who drafted what type of player and why. To me, draft day is tremendous because it reveals so much about each team. Every club more or less shows us their hands.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

I can't wait to see the look on Sanchez' face the first time he throws a pass in that Meadowlands wind.

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Not a real fun place to play QB in say December.

Brian (Michigan)

Looking back Mario Williams has been much better than Vince Young, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush.

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

....and your point?

Benjamin (Plattsrbugh)

am I hte only one who thinks Jason Peters is overrated?

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Maybe. He did not have a very good season last year. No question about it. Held out. Came in out of shape. Didn't look like himself. However, he was a dominant player two years ago and remember, he was a TE in college. Just scratching the surface of what he can become. In an excellent situation now to even further develop his skills. I thought it was a tremendous move to snag one of the best LTs in the game.

Brian (Miami, Florida)

Benjamin (Plattsrbugh): am I hte only one who thinks Jason Peters is overrated? ... No, but you are the only one who spells that poorly.

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

U got htat wright

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

Okay folks, I am out. Great chat as usual. Was a lot of fun. Tune in next week. Same bat time. Same bat channel.
