Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hi folks, let's get rolling.

Mojo (Castle Rock, CO)

Hi Bill, early question for you. Broncos signed FA Chris Baker from Hampton. Earlier rankings had him as one of the top rated DTs, but obviously he has some major character issues. If the Broncos can get that young man in shape, could he end up being a solid value at NT?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

It's fairly non-risky. I like Baker. The team doesn't have much invested in him at all. Plus, he'll have a chance because there isn't much there at NT in Dnever. I like the move.

hunter nehl SD

Do the raiders want to win

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

I would think so, yes, Hunter. Not so sure, huh?

tom nj [via mobile]

Hello Bill.Tough question for you. Do you think SDC FB Jacob Hester is being wasted as a blocking back? He rushed for around 1200 yards as a TB for no. 1 ranked LSU team in 2007. What gives? Thanks!

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

I think he played fullback last year because they needed him. But he'll get a chance to carry the rock some this year. he was outstanding in the preseason as a rusher.

Bill Williamson

Robert (Latrobe, PA)

All the drafts seemed underwhelming to me, with the Raiders deserving special mention. Who had the best draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

You talking in the AFC West? I think it was San Diego. The Chargers didn't take many chances and they picked up three or four guys who can help right away,

Clay (Charlotte)

Hey Bill, is this still considered a "re-building year" for KC? With all of the young players and a new QB, when do you expect them to produce?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

I think 2010 is a target date for this team.

Luke (St. Louis)

As a die hard Raiders fan I was at the point of giving up on them after they bypassed Michael Crabtree. After listening and reading more about it - I like the attitude of DHB far more than Crabtree and hope he turns into a true #1 receiver. Have you had a chance to interview him to gauge your thoughst on DHB as a person?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

I haven't talked to him yet. I look forward to it.I talked to Mike Mitchell, the safety taken in the second round, and he seems to be a good guy.

Jeff (Los Angeles, CA)

Bill, since the Broncos failed to address the defensive front 7 much at all in the draft, who starts at those positions? Thomas and Crowder seem like better fits in a 4-3 than a 3-4. Can Dummervil or Moss actually play the OLB position? Does DJ Williams move back inside again?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

I think WIlliams will play inside. Crowder and Moss better make the transition to outside linebacker or their days in Denver will be numbered. I think Dumervil will transition well to linebacker. He's a football player. He'll make plays from anywhere.

Nick (Boston)

Do you think McD will be able to work his Offensive magic on the Broncos?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

He's done well in the past. I think he will do well but it's going to be more difficult with Orton than it was with Cutler.

Jay (Hartford)

As for the Raiders generally, and their draft specifically, you seemed to be less negative than just about everyone else. Maybe not positive, but less negative. Do you think they can be competitive this coming season, or were you just being kind in not piling on the criticism?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

Less negative may be a good way to phrase it. Look, Heyward-Bey and Michell might become good players. Stars develop in this league regarless of where they were taken. What if the Patriots shocked the world and drfafted Tom Brady in the second round instead of the sixth round. They would have been beaten up by the draft experts. So it really doesn't matter where a guy is taken. The bottom line is if he becomes a player or not. But the problem with Oakland's trade is they didn't work the draft board. They could have taken those guys later. But they wanted both Heyward-Bey and Mitchell and they got them. So it's show-me time now.

Dave (Wichita, KS)

What's your take on the Gonzalez trade? I guess it's fair value, but it seems dumb to trade the face of the franchise for what will probably be a late second-rounder in a year.

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Some guys should never be traded and Gonzalez is one of those guys. The Chiefs will be without a guy who caught 195 passes the past two years and they don't get anything in return until next year. I don't like it.

Ryan (NJ)

Will Denver's O be top 5 in the league still, with Moreno and McD's scheme?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

I think it all depends if Orton can manage the offense well. But this will be a running offense. Moreno, Denver thinks, is a three-down back. The offense will revolve around him.

Bob ( San Diego, CA)

Bill - Chargers did not address safety in the draft save for Ellison in the 6th - do you think they are calling Mike Brown? Thanks

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

We'll see. i think they relaly like Ellison.

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Sorry for the delay, I had a computer crash. We're back up.

Ryan (NJ)

Over/Under on Broncos D rank: 20th best

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

Over. they were 29th last year and I don't them improving that much.

Scott(huntington Beach)

Hi Bill. I personally like the Broncos draft if they can go out and sign Leroy Hill from Seattle. Do you think this is possible?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

Sure, it's posisble. It wouldn't be a bad fit. I coudl see Kansas CIty doing it as well.

Justin (KC)

In your expert opinion..Who will be the biggest NFL star: Jeremy Maclin, Michael Crabtree, Darius Heyward-Bey, or Kenny Brit?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

No expert here but I say it'll be Crabtree. He is a complete player. he'll be a No. 1 receiver for 12 years. San Francisco just got a gift.

Rick (KC)

Any chance Pioli makes a play for Haley's old pal Anquan Boldin?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

it makes sense. the Chiefs have two second-round picks next year and a ton of cap room. Boldin would fit in well.

mike (kc)

hey bill how many wins will it take to win this mess of a division in your eyes

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

I'm saying it will take eight and San Diego will win 10 or 11 games.

Andy (KC)

Will KC go after some of the defensive free agents? (Leroy Hill, Larry Foote, Jason Taylor)

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

I still say Taylor would be a great fit.

Justin (KC)

Give us you expected AFC West standings in week 16 (just standings, not the records)

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

San Diego, Denver, Oakland, Kansas City.

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

O-line.

Ryan (NJ)

Do you know what plans Denver has for Ayers? Will they use him as a five tech DE like KC will use Jackson, or a stand up OLB?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

I think they will rotate him from both DE and OLB.

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

I think they will rotate him from both DE and OLB.

Ron (Denver, Co.)

Bill, Alphonso Smith over Rey Maualuga? At next year's first round expense?! Bad move for the Bronc's, right?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

Smith is a decent player. I just don't like trading next year's No. 1 for him.

mike (kc)

bigger mess of a division AFC West or NFC North?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

Probably the AFC West. Denver, Oakland and Kansas City all have a long way to go.

Robb (Colorado)

Who are the Broncos starting LB? Williams, Dumervil, Woodyard, and ??

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

Andra Davis.

Rick (KC)

What would it cost KC to aquire Boldin?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

I would think a second-round pick.

eric

Didnt haley and boldin get into a huge argument about packages against the eagles? Boldin will not be joining Haley in KC

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

Those things are overrated. Plus, I think Haley goes at it with his players all the time. Boldin wasn't the first and he won't be the last.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

Worse move: trading a 2010 1st rounder for a 2009 2nd rounder OR trading Broncos 2010 1st rounder instead of Bears 2010 1st rounder regardless of the trade?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

Both are bad. The biggest problem is that Denver didn't make it a conditional first rounder. That's all it had to do. It could have been written into the trade that Seattle gets the lowest of the two picks, Seattle still would have made that trade.

Jeff (Ft. Collins, CO)

TWO WORDS Richard from Greensboro...SALARY CAP. There you go Bill...just here to help you out.

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

What are we talking about, Jeff?

Ron (Denver, Co.)

Would you have taken Maualuga over Alphonso Smith?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

I;m not so sure. Smith is going to make Broncos' fans very happy.

Rick (KC)

Boldin is a perfect fit, but I dont thin Pioli would do this kind of deal.

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

He might want to think about it. The Chiefs need some horses.

Jeff (Ft. Collins, CO)

Seriously Bill? The comment about trading away one of our 1st round picks. We got a first round talent for second round money. How does that not make sense? Talk all you want about a conditional pick, the Broncos and Bears will be within 5 picks of each other.

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

I don't care if it's a five-pick swing. It's still five picks. If Denver was so worried about the money, trade it next year when it is at it's maximun value. Even an armchair GM like you can't argue with that one, Jeff.

Brad (Baltimore)

Any chance the Broncos go after Hollis Thomas?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

Shanahan liked him a couple of years ago.

Kyle (KC)

I realize most of the division has some serious work to do, but who do you think is best positioned for the next 3-5 years?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

San Diego and Kansas City. Both teams have quarterbacks.

Mark (Atlanta, GA)

Shouldn't I be studying for my 4 o'clock final exam?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

I'd think so.

Ryan (NJ)

I know Dre Bly stepped up last year, but overall he was horrible in Denver. I have heard comparisons of Smith to Bly, due to lack of tackling ability. Should we Denver fans be concerned over this?

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

I don't think so. I think Smith's only issue is his lack of ideal size. I think he will be fine.

adam(Houston)

Which Broncos Rb will be cut and signed by Houston?

Bill Williamson
  (3:02 PM)

Guess: Ryan Torain.

Bill Williamson
  (3:02 PM)

Thanks, everyone. Great hour. Talk to you soon.
