hey Pat love your stuff! How good was the Alex Smith trade it seems like we didnt get much back?
The fact they were able to get anything for him is good. They had too many TEs, so at least they got something. I'm out at Bucs and will be covering their rookie camp later this afternoon.
The Saints have been clearing cap room. Any chance they try to make a play at Eagles corner Sheldon Brown?
Think Saints have done enough with DBs. Might be time to get a big RB, though.
What's the word on Edgerrin James to Saints?
No, just speculation at this point. Stay tuned.
Pat, What do you think the Saints will do about D Line back ups now that Thomas and Young have been released?
They're in pretty good shape with Ellis, Coleman, Clancey and Pressley. Might be overlooking one more, but i don't have roster in front of me.
Now that the draft is over, what areas do the Falcons still need to address on defense?
Maybe another LB, but that's about it.
On the Sheldon Brown topic: What are the chances Carolina takes a run at him? Marshall is better served as the nickel as opposed to the starter.
I think they're planning on starting Marshall. They're serious about it.
What are your thoughts on Roy Miller?
Should play right away. He's the big type DT that Bates likes. He's going at 315 right now. Bucs nee that.
Hey Pat, Will you tell everyone why the Saints will win the South and why do you Think Ricky William was in the Saints training Camp 3 weeks ago?
I'll leave the predictions up to you guys for now. Not sure what you're talking about with Ricky. Care to elaborate?
Peria Jerry has been compared to Warren Sapp. How valid is that comparison (when Sapp was coming out of college)?
I've seen that, too. From what I know, he moves like Sapp, which is very good. Not sure that he'll be Sapp, but anything close would be nice.
Is Jeff Garcia's giant mug still up at One Buc?
Not sure. It's on the stadium, not on One Buc. Or at least it was as of Sunday. I came in from the other side today and didn't go past the stadium. I'll try to check it out when I leave tonight.
Odds that Duke Robinson can win the starting RG position?
Right away? Let's not get carried away. He was a fifth-round pick.
Is Julius Peppers THAT stupid or his agent THAT incompetent? I read where he is a 'N0-Show' for the Panthers' mini-camp becasue he is still upset the Panthers haven't traded him yet. I think someone needs to explain to him that Carolina isn't allowed to talk to anyone until he signs his franchise tender. This is why (from what I read) the Patriots wouldn't touch him before the draft, because they preferred to talk to the team rather than a player's agent. Getting a deal done would have been easier before the draft, and now it's going to be even more difficult. Any chance we unload this prima donna or are the Panthers going to be subjected to this all season?
Still think it's possible he could go at some point. But it's a lot more difficult to make a deal after the draft is over.
I realize that the Panthers needed insurance in case Peppers leaves, but was giving up a 1st rounder in what is likely to be a much stronger class for a guy like Everette Brown a good idea?
One way or another, I say they'll end up with a first-round pick in next year's draft. They'll get it for Peppers either before or after next season.
Is L. Sidbury an every down end?
Not right away. For now, he's a pass-rush specialist.
Which of the follow Bucs WR has a better chance of being this year's Antonio Bryant: Paris or Maurice?
You're forgetting Dexter Jackson. Oops, never mind. Maurice.
Hey Pat any chance the Saints are clearing cap room for another LB?
My guess is RB.
Pat, what are your thoughts on the 2 big RB's the Saints signed as UFAs? Think either one of them can make a difference and be the big back the team needs?
They'll get a shot. I like the Wisconsin kid.
Pat, thank you for giving me a reason to come to work on this beautiful Friday! Why do people want Carlolina to make so many major changes? The team was 12-4 and is (peppers pending) returning 21 of 22 starters. And, the one that's gone was supposedly the weak link. They needed some depth and got that through the draft. There's also plenty of time to let the Pep situation play out. Panthers in '09!
I WORK BY THE TRAINING CAMP AND SEEN RICKY THERE AND HE CAME TO GET HIM HUMMER WORKED ON
Hmm, I'm guessing he was probably just visiting. I'll check around on that.
where did lucas end up? If he has not gone anywhere yet where do you see him going?
He just signed with Seattle couple days ago.
Hey Pat, is there any possible way Julius Peppers could end up with the Patriots still? If there was a trade, what players do the Patriots have that Carolina would find desirable?
Anything's possible with the Pep situation. But they're looking for draft picks, not players.
Are there any other FA (or players that got cut) that you think Tampa should look at?
Nobody out there that excites me. You got somebody in mind?
To Wes in NY --- Atlanta and NO are both set up to win for years to come w/ Brees, Ryan, Turner, Colston, R. White, Vilma, Abraham, etc. Carolina has an old, unreliable QB coming off one of the worst gms in playoff history. Plus the Peppers problem. Carolina is on a downward slide.
A rebuttal for Wes.
Pat, why in the world would Edgerin James want to play in New Orleans? Didn't he ask for his release to get more playing time? I don't think he would get much playing time in New Orleans
hey pat. am i gonna be the number three reciever? and would you consider me a deep threat?
I'd consider you a seventh-round pick.
who wins 100 yard dash: Peppers or Yasinskas?
Has Freeman decided on a jersey number yet? And what are the chances of him reuniting the Jackson 5?
He's going with No. 5.
Pat, are you as tired of hearing my name as I am?
More than you can imagine.
Seems like the Falcons FO doesn't put much stock in having established vets at the CB position.
They made it through last year and it wasn't a disaster. Don't forget about Chevis Jackson. The kid is gonna be good.
WHO IS YOUR PICK TO WIN THE SOUTH?
Let's wait until August for that.
I think Freeman is going to be a total bust, look at his play at Kansas State. SUB-PAR what do you think?
Gotta give him a chance. You don't have much choice now that they've drafted him.
How's the weather down there?
86 on my car thermometer. Sunny. Hasn't rained in forever.
Why does Pierre Thomas never get mentioned? Everyone is clamoring for another running back, and all this guy did was put up numbers every time he got a chance. What am I missing?
Pierre's good. But they need another back because it's a long season and a big guy would help keep Pierre and Reggie fresh.
Who do you see starting with Lofton and Peterson at LB in Atlanta day 1?
I understand they have to give him a chance, but why waste a first round pick on a quarterback that could not make it in college?
Is there any early word on how Jake Delhomme's arm looks a year removed from surgery? I know everyone heard that year two was supposed to show Jake fully healed.
We'll find out today because Panthers are having minicamp. But, listen, I don't think his arm was a problem last year.
Would the Falcons have traded for Dorsey instead of picking Jerry if the price had been just the 24 pick?
I don't know for sure.
No, thats why I was asking you!!! But where do you think the Bucs could use the most help right now?
Speed WR, another big DT.
what do you think will happen with peppers? it seems like he'll just hold out until the end of training camp, sign the tender then play.
Most likely. But I'm not ruling out that they possibly move him.
Any chance Mack Pushes Barber out for the starting spot opposite Talib?
Yes, Bucs are real high on Elbert. Raheem knows what he has there.
chances bucs go out and get Jason Taylor?
Is there any chance that Peppers, say, retires and starts a hot-sauce company? Or maybe goes back to school to be a CPA? Or joins a circus?
I wouldn't rule anything out with Pep. He's a unique individual.
first of all, Sean, shout out to bucs fans in binghamton. Secondly, has dre bly been signed? if not, why hasn't tampa signed him? would he be a good fit?
Shout out to Binghamton from here. I grew up about 35 miles south of there. Not sure on Bly and don't have time to look it up. Anyone have the answer?
If Everett Brown is so good, why did he get selected in the middle of the second round?
Ask John Fox.
I wish Buccaneers fans would stop talking about how Josh Freeman's going to be a bust. For better or for worse, he's the future of the Bucs now, and he does at least have a lot of upside. Get excited! Don't be so pessimistic.
Like I said, you don't have a choice. Find it kind of funny that the fan base that wanted this team to draft a QB for so long is complaining now that he's here.
Pat is there any Chance that Julles Peppers has a chance of heart and and agrees to a long turn deal with the Cats?.After all Pep was played at unc born in north carolina.I mean most player in the NFL love to have chanes to play for their home town team.
Yeah, but Pep isn't "most players".
Pat, Bly is out there. Why not tampa? good fit?
They're serious about going young.
If the Panthers fall flat on their face do you see Fox being shown the door?
He needs back-to-back winning seasons for first time in his career.
Pat why did Mel wried hair kipper give the Bucs a better draft grade then the panthers?I think you can make a case that panthers had the best draft in the south and the bucs had the worst draft in the south
You'd have to ask Mel.
How does Dan Morgan look this year?
Wait until they have minicamp. But I've talked to Morgan and he says he feels better than at any time since before his rookie year.
Do you think New Orleans will be awarded the 2013 Super Bowl?
Yes, I do. I think New Orleans is the best Super Bowl venue -- from a logistics point.
Hey Pat, love the chat so far and everything you write for the South. I heard some rumblings through the grapevine that the Panthers may switch to a 3-4, because they have such a talented LB core and a couple good rushing DEs...heard anything?
You actually think John Fox would make a dramatic change???
im sick about all the excepticism around Freeman, do any of you remember what people was saying about Flacco this time last year? i actually think that he should start right away, plus, he has a lot of talent around him, what do you think Pat?
Gotta give him a chance. At the latest, he'll be starting after the London game.
With all the improvements to the New Orleans Saints Pat do you think the Saints are almost a lock to make the playoffs? Also i believed the Saints signed Heath Evans to be that short yard chain mover so whats all the talk about another one?
Like what Saints have done very much, but nothing's a lock. Yeah, Evans and some combo of the two kids they just signed or Mike Bell could answer the short yardage thing.
Please tell me the Panthers switching to a 3-4 is a joke. They have the nose tackle (Kemo), but a locker room of 230 lb. linebackers spells disaster if they do.
They're not switching.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence Sidbury and Chris Owens ?
Like Sidbury a lot. Think he can help as pass rusher right away and eventually become an every-down guy. Don't know enough about Owens to have a strong opinion.
Pat, given the fact the Bucs didn't add a CB in the draft in the 7th round, should they look into adding another CB through free agency or maybe even trade for someone like Sheldon Brown? Right now they just have Talib, Barber, Mack, Cox, and a bunch of no name guys at CB.
They might go with that. They're serious about going young and Mack can play.
its funny, you never take pot shots against the other coaches in the South, just Fox sinc eyou covered him for so long. Just an observation...
That wasn't a shot at Fox. That was a fact that he's a creature of habit. I've been accused at taking shots at every coach.
Now that the draft is over, you think Brooks will get picked up or go Front office with TB?
Don't know. Waiting to see. Lot depends on if somebody will give him opportunity to play a lot. Not sure that's gonna happen.
pat why did Dan Morgan come out retirement ??I know that he was suppose open 2 restaurant in charlotte.
He did open two restaurants in Charlotte. You can own a business and still play in NFL.
Pat, who you got in the Bulls/Celtics game 7?
No idea. Don't follow NBA at all. Used to be a Celtics fan back in the Bird days.
Pat I played across from two NFL-caliber corners and have only been scored on 1 time in 37 games. Plus, TD likes my ball skills (13 INTs), speed/quickness, and my ability to mirror receivers. Is that good enough to be a 3rd round pick in the NFL?
There's our scouting report.
Seems to me Tampa is resigned to being poor this year. No way they can win with that QB mix in '09.
At this time last year, lot of people thought Falcons would go 0-16.
Now pat i know you dont wanna tip your hat just yet but who do you think had the best offseason so far in the NFC South?
Gotta give it to the Saints on paper. But we'll see how it works out.
does the availability of jason taylor hurt pepper's value? if you need a one-dimensional pass rusher you can just sign taylor instead of trading for peppers.
i see you like to take shots at JP too, missing in action like 2007?? Sacks aren't the only measure of a player, look at his run D metrics. Ask KC to show you.
If you thought Pep had a good season by any measure in 2007, go back and check the tape.
Pat, who do you think was the biggest pick up this offseason for the Saints: Gregg Williams or one of the position players?
I'll say Gregg Williams.
Pat, last year the bucs pass rush showed flashes, but whistful overall. With Adams, Miller, Hovan, and White/Carter, how do you think the pass rush will be?
Haven't seen many upgrades. We'll see if Bates can coach Adams into something.
Come on Pat... even people that like the Freeman pick say that he's not ready. Ryan was a 4 year player in college.
Was talking more about the team than the QB.
Pat do you think K2 can make people forget his past with his play on the field in Tampa?
If the QB can get him the ball, sure.
Oh i watched plenty of tape. KC Joyner did too, and he stated that Peppers had an off year, but not a bad year. You are blinded by the stat box.
Talk to coaches and personnel people around the league about that.
Mr. Yasinskas, is there annnnnnnny chance that the Saints bring back Deuce? Please say yes.
It is so ironic that Bucs fans are so down on Freeman, whereas Panthers fans would have loved to get him - and they have a better QB situation than the Bucs.
They should rename this the Julius Peppers Chat...bet that doesn't get posted.
There, it's posted.
Jake is still my guy, and I am behind him 100%. Got any suggestions on how to replace him or with whom? (And What do you mean I have to put together back-to-back winning seasons for the 1st time?)
Thanks for stopping by, John. Now, get back to practice.
Pat - if tito needs an indication of how good Peppers is, tell him to check out how many trade offers the Panthers have gotten
Just sharing that. Five minutes and I've got to go out to practice.
Is Griese or Johnson the odd man out? Please say Griese, Please say Griese, Pleas say Griese...
Griese for now. But Johnson probably joins him at the end of the preseason.
Will you blog your opinion of how Freeman looks at camp?
It is a little unfair to say that Fox has never had winning seasons back to back. I know 2002 was 7-9, but it sure felt like a win to everyone in the Carolinas after 1-15 the year before. And 2003 went pretty well.
Maybe, but you know the hot seat stuff will come up if he doesn't win.
Pat, a yeomen's effort today and always...maybe you should do one of those famous marathon Simmons chats...thoughts?
We'll explore that possibility. All right, I've got to get out to Bucs practice. I'll give you an update on Freeman later on. Thanks for coming by.
