Ahhhhhhhh yes. Wednesday at 1PM ET/10AM PT. My favorite time of the week! Looking forward to a nice long chat with MMA Nation today. A ton to get to, not the least of which is Toby Imada's inverse triangle choke of Jorge Masvidal at Bellator V. I was cageside for the fight, and, well, I've never seen anything like it. Fire away ladies.
If Chuck Liddell does return to the UFC to fulfill his contract of one more fight, who do you think they should put him against?
It's a tough call, Trevor, b/c you'd like see Liddell go out with a W. The fight I'd like to see is Liddell vs. Stephan Bonnar. TUF Season 1 coach versus TUF Season 1 pupil.
Hey Jon, do you think we will ever see a tournament sytle ppv out of the ufc like when the ufc first started?
Very doubtful, Jerry. The UFC's current model has been wildly successful for them. No need to change it.
Jon! Your boy Joey Villasenor will be taking on Cyborg Santos (the male one) you excited?
Can't wait, Todd. I just hope Smokin' Joe isn't hurt by the inactivity. I know he trains with a great camp, but he hasn't fought in about a year.
Let me just be the first to say...SMOKIN Joey Villasenor. The matchup with Evangelista Santos makes for an exciting fight, and gets to headline!
Yeah Jeff, I'd prefer to see Villasenor on the June 6th Strikeforce card. But, if he has to fight on the ShoMMA card, he might as well be the headliner.
Congratulations on seeing Submission of the Year up close and personal. At what point did you realize that Imada was about to turn out Masvidal's lights?
We didn't realize until a split second before Masvidal did. Masvidal got a bit cocky at that moment, and didn't appear to be in trouble. Next thing he knew, he was asleep. Huge, huge props to Toby Imada. We'll be talking about it for a long time. A great early moment for Bellator.
Hey Jon, do you think Anderson Silva can dominate the light heavies like he does the middle weight division or is he just 1 of the top 5 guys at that weight?
Jordan, Silva would certainly be in the Top 5 at 205. And, quite frankly, I think he'd be favored to beat almost all of the current UFC light heavyweights.
Jon- Awesome job on the Bellator broadcasts. You do a great job with blow-by-blow. Hope to see Season 2 on ESPN2. My question- what will Bellator do after the tournaments are over?
Thanks, Roger. Bellator will continue with the tournament format in Season 2. For example- at 155, they would have another lightweight tournament to determine the No. 1 contender. That guy would then face the champion, which will be Eddie Alvarez or Toby Imada (to be crowned at the end of Season 1).
Is UFC 98 the MMA version of the Madden cover? Seems like every fighter on the origional card has been hurt.
That's a strong analogy from one of our strongest chatters.
Any chance we'll ever see Rampage v.s the Spider in the future? Do you think Bisping can handle Silva and take his 185lb belt?
I do think Rampage-Silva is a fight the UFC would look long and hard at putting together. As for Bisping, I expect him to (narrowly) get by Dan Henderson at UFC 100. That would put him in line for a title shot at 185, provided The Spider is still defending the belt. As for Bisping's chances against Silva, I'll let you know after his fight with Hendo.
Which card are you looking forward to more as a fan...UFC 100 or 101?
Hard to argue with my guy Florian fighting for the belt, and the Silva-Griffin clash. But I'd have to say UFC 100. I cannot wait for the Mir-Lesnar rematch, and the GSP-Thiago Alves fight is No. 1 on my lists of fights I'm most looking forward to. Alves has a great chance to spring the upset.
With all of the changes to UFC 98, one of the fights that has gotten little press is Sherk v. Edgar. Do you see a FOTN like Edgar v. Griffin or more of a snoozefest like Sherk v. Griffin?
Hate to take the easy way out, Charlie. But I think the fight will be somewhere in the middle. Entertaining at times, dull at others. It'll be interesting to see how Edgar stacks up against one of the top lightweights in the world, and how he handles the huge stage.
Termites eat through wood two times faster when listening to rock music. You're welcome.
You must drink Snapple every day? Not your best cap effort, but thanks for the insight.
SO your saying Alves might be worth a bet in the MGM sports book?
I'm saying Vegas has made him way too big an underdog.
Mr. Anik - WHOA, how about PacMan on Saturday?! I'm convinced he could put Floyd to sleep, how about you??
No one is putting Mayweather to sleep. But even as an unabashed Floyd fan, I think Pacquiao has a great chance to beat him. Mayweather has a very difficult fight in July first, opposite Juan Manuel Marquez. That's no tune-up fight.
Hey jon,any word on who fedor is fighting next
The expectation is that it will be Josh Barnett in August, but nothing has been finalized. If I'm Affliction, he's the only opponent I'm even considering.
With Gray Maynard getting jumped over for contention potentially by Diego Sanchez, how about a Maynard v. the Fisher/Uno winner in the mean time?
I like it, Chuck. If there's one guy to feel bad for at 155, it's Maynard. Worthy of a title shot right now, in my opinion.
you have picked quite a few underdogs latley, Rashad Bisping Alves, if you bet on these fights you can become rich and won't have to do these chats anymore!
Haha...I haven't really picked all of those underdogs. I have backed Evans and Bisping, but I'm still on the fence about GSP-Alves. The week before the fight is when I go on the record. You know that, Al. Trying to get me in trouble...
I see Alves winning way before I would see Bisping. No way Bisping beats Hendo. I repeat NO WAY
We shall see, David. We all love Henderson, but Bisping has a well-rounded skill set and a lot of momentum coming into the fight. Talk to me in July.
All this talk of bets, you still leaning towards taking Shields over Lawler?
Won't Edgar be too small like in the Gray Maynard fight?
Quite possibly. But Sherk is small.
who would win in a superfight faber or pacquiao
What can we look forward to on MMA live this week? And who at espn should we start sending e-mails to in an effort to get it on the duece?
This week, it is our one-year anniversary! Mel Allen might say 'How about that?' We look back at some of the memorable and forgettable moments from MMA Live's first year. We also spend quite a bit of time on Toby Imada's amazing victory over Jorge Masvidal at Bellator V.
you seem to be an expert on this. Do they take bets in Vegas on other things besides who wins. Like ending round, how the person wins, etc....
Most sportsbooks in Vegas will just take action on the fight itself. But for major events (i.e. Couture-Lesnar), I'm sure you can find some prop bets somewhere on the Strip.
whos the next heavyweight getting a title shot after ufc 100? is fedor ever gonna be fighting in the octagon in the ufc?
I expect Cheick Kongo or Shane Carwin to get the Mir-Lesnar winner. But if Mir wins, I wouldn't be surprised to see Randy Couture emerge as the top contender (provided he beats Nogueira at UFC 102). I think a Mir-Couture fight is intriguing, and billable. As for Fedor in the UFC, could really go either way. Your guess = as good as mine.
Is eddie alvarez ev er coming to UFC? It would have been nice to see him in 101 in philly. He comes from a rowdy neighborhood so the Wachovia Center would have been insane...
Eddie Alvarez has found a great home with the Bellator Fighting Championships, and I do say that objectively. I don't expect Alvarez to ever fight in the UFC. He's making plenty of money, while also retaining a certain degree of his freedom.
Anything fun for Cinco de Mayo budd?
I wish buddy. Just working on MMA Live. But good news for you- we will be using your e-mail on Rashad Evans gettin' no love on MMA Live tomorrow.
if there was a world cup of mma what country in your opinion would win ?
Jon, love your work. You guys do a great job. Have to disagree with you though on your Bisping vs Hendo analysis above. What exactly does Bisping do better than Hendo? Maybe cardio? I don't see Bisping doing very well in that fight.
I think Bisping is a much better fighter than he was even a year ago. The Hendo love is coming through strong in the chat today. We...shall...see.
Jon, while I normally agree with you, what makes you think Bisping is on a roll? He still hasn't beat anyone near the caliber of Hendo. I think he has the motor to test Hendo's cardio but I am not sure I can see how he beats Hendo. I think the UFC is promoting him heavily because he is the face of British MMA in the UFC.
Fair enough. Can't wait to dole out a bunch of 'I told you so's' on July 12th.
a standing triangle you have to be kidding me that was sick it was better the kevin johnson dunk on hakeem the dream
Hahaha...It was unreal, John. I just hope my call of it at bellator.com did it justice. It was one of the most electric sporting moments I've ever been a part of, even if the crowd wasn't great.
What ever happen to Kimbo was he just a stunt or what?
He's technically under Strikeforce's control, but wants to embark on a pro boxing career. He's certainly not long for MMA.
hey jon, have my tickets to UFC 100, my girlfriend and I are very excited for the show? Any chance of a meet and greet with the crew of MMA live? Also, which matchup, for ufc 100, is your early prediction for FIght of the night?
There is a chance we might set up an MMA Live booth that weekend so we can meet some of the fans. It was nice catching up with a few of our regular chatters in Dayton, OH last weekend. Hopefully we cross paths in July. Early prediction for Fight of the Night- Alves-GSP.
What are your thoughts on TUF this season? I am not overly impressed with the fighters so far.
I've been busy catching up on Sengoku 8. Still way behind on Season 9. Apologies to MMA Nation. The fights that we cover on MMA live always take precedence. Will try to get caught up soon.
Pac-man over Faber? Surely not in mma? and MONEY > PAC-MAN
I hope you're right on Mayweather. I just think Floyd will finally be going up against someone who can match his speed, especially offensively. And still no guarantee the fight happens, of course.
I got your back Jon...i think Bisping will win as well. He only has one loss and that was a split decision to the LHW champ Sugar.
Finally! Thanks, Shawn. It took 208 submissions in the chat queue before someone stepped up! Go Bisping!
Contractually, is ESPN/MMA Live not allowed to recap The Ultimate Fighter?
Not at all, Jeff. We just have such little time to cover so many MMA promotions and events. We have covered The Ultimate Fighter before, and we certainly give the season finales plenty of coverage.
If you were to include Anderson Silva in the 205 rankings, where would you put him? I'd have 3rd behind Evans and Rampage, but would be fine with him being 4th behind Machida.
Such a tough question to answer. Right now, I'd have him #4, just behind the three guys you mentioned. But some folks would put him at No. 1 right off the bat.
will urijah faber come to the ufc and maybe fight 155?
I used to think it was an eventuality. But Faber is a fairly small guy, and I'm not so sure he wouldn't be a middle-of-the-pack guy in the UFC's loaded LW division.
How suprised are you to see BJ Penn showing respect for Ken Flo, seeing as how he basically bashed GSP 24/7 last fight...
I haven't seen any of BJ Penn's comments since the Florian fight was (unofficially) announced.
Everyone outside of England knows that Bisping should have TWO losses, especially Matt Hamill.
I would agree with that, Jeff.
"My body is a sword and my mind is the blade" - Lyoto Machida. And they say his English is lacking. That is my quote of the year.
who in your opinion is a better prospect? Jon jones, king mo, or that explosive guy in strikeforce, fajio(spelling?) all seem talented? Who do you think has the most potential?
Great question, AT&T. For me, with respect to King Mo, it's between Jon Jones and Rafael 'Feijao' Cavalcante. Forced to choose, I'll take Jones, but I'm a huge fan of Feijao.
Props to Kristof Soszynski for stepping right back into the cage fresh of his huge win at 97.
Amen. One of my favorite fighters. An underrated, versatile guy. Don't sleep on Soszynski at 205. He's on a steep incline.
what has a better chance of happening faber going to the ufc or faber vs torres?
Faber vs. Torres.
Hugely looking forward to GSP vs Alves. Potential to be fight of the year. But if GSP wins then what next? Hes beaten everybody in the division. Is it rematch with Fitch time? Or does he wait for a meag fight with Silva?
Provided GSP wins, I expect him to face Anderson Silva in a mega-fight OR defend his title against Jon Fitch, Martin Kampmann, or someone I'm forgetting.
any chance of there being a torres urijah match up one day.
Very much so, yes.
"kids hit the books don't throw hooks" phil baroni is the quote of the year
I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but everyone keeps talking about Kimbo Slice and him wanting to try boxing because MMA was meant for him. Didn't he lose by straight right to the chin in 13 seconds to a 205 pounder? Give me a break at Kimbo at any professional level as an athlete. Maybe a towel boy.
I think Kimbo's skills are better suited for boxing, but I agree with you. Kimbo wants to box because it's easier to train than MMA. Not fewer hours in the gym, but far fewer nuances to learn and master.
Mike Swick is calling. He says you are forgetting him.
...that's the name. Thanks, Jeff. Don't tell me Paulo Thiago is on the other line, though.
Nice show of class last week with the MMA hater Greg. Speaking of haters you talk to dan rafeal at all on campus? Also who ya got in a 'Money vs Pac-Man super fight?
Dan is rarely in Bristol, but we continue via e-mail every now and again. Used to a lot more when I was covering boxing on a more full-time basis. Now, I'm all about MMA.
Cole Miller made some comments the other day about how he could cut to 135 if he needed to. Do you think that is dangerous for a guy who stands 6'1? And who do you like in the Cole vs Efrain fight?
I do think it is dangerous. Don't want to see another Corey Hill situation. Sorry if I ruined your lunch there. As for Miller-Escudero, I like Cole. More high-level experience.
I'll fight Bobby from Cincy in the backyard for 5 grand right now. Just don't take me down.
Yeah, verbal agreement before the fight to stand and trade only.
Obviously i was trying to say Kimbo WASN'T meant for MMA. And why try boxing because you lost in MMA to a soft right punch.
Jon, what do you think about the recent proposition put forward by Roy Jones Jr., saying he would fight Silva under MMA rules inside the UFC Octagon? Dana already declined the offer, but do you think Roy was serious?
Hi Joe. No, I don't think RJJ was serious. But if that's what it would take to fight Anderson for a big payday, who knows? But in that setting, it would be quick - and painful.
Any thoughts on "The Crow" being released after just one fight? Almost seems like the UFC just used him as another potential draw for the Canadian event.
You're exactly right. I hadn't thought of it like that, but it would appear they used him b/c of his name recognition north of the border. Supposedly he still trains like a beast, but his game is not translating on fight night anymore.
I agree with Dana's assessment of not wanting to allow Roy into the cage but don't you think by doing so, it would probably be the most bought PPV in UFC history?
Not necessarily, Jeff. I still don't think that fight moves the needle like others would.
If Phil Baroni is "da best evah!" what is Smokin' Joey?
The forgotten middleweight.
Are St. Pierre's best days behind him? What's next on his agenda?
GSP's best days are firmly in front of him. Perhaps no mixed martial artist in the world is peaking quite like St. Pierre right now. He is fighting Thiago Alves at UFC 100, defending his welterweight title.
Fact or Fiction - Jose Canseco will last more than three minutes against Hong Man Choi? See you Friday in Corpus Christi for Bellator!
Fiction. Canseco is a mockery of a travesty. Looking forward to meeting you in Corpus Christi!
What did Diego Sanchez do wrong after TUF? He looked light years ahead of Florian back in the day. Now Kenny looks like a better fighter.
Both guys have become much more well-rounded fighters. But Kenny Florian didn't have nearly the MMA experience that Sanchez did when they first fought, and that fight was at 185. Kenny has evolved into a monster at 155, and I would expect him to give Diego all he could handle if the rematch happens.
Love MMA, boxing not even a little. But Roy would kill anyone in MMA on the feet. Just a fact.
I hear a lot of that, Ron. But Jones Jr. isn't nearly the boxer he was five years ago. His defense and head movement is still great, but I'm not sure his offensive power is still there.
Dick Vitale : College Basketball :: Jon Anik : MMA. How does that sound?
Works for me, man. I'll take that as a tremendous compliment.
Do you expect the Alves/GSP to turn into a standup war? I think GSP will finally be in the cage with someone he will not be able to muscle around. I agree with your assessment with not being shocked by an "upset".
Jeff in MD agrees with me!!!!!!!!!!! I'm drinking tonite.
In all seriousness, Canseco needs to be saved from himself here. As much as people want to see him pounded by HMC, the guy is seriously putting himself in danger. He has no business getting in the ring.
Agreed. DREAM. must really be struggling.
Rate Canseco's skills as a fighter from 0 to 100... gotta be high 90's right?
Are you serious, Scott? I'd say 68. I know he's got a background in Tae Kwon Do, etc., but come on.
Am I crazy, but would a Chuck vs. Silva fight make sense? I could see Chuck knocking out the Spider.
At this stage of the game, I think you're a little crazy. Liddell ain't knocking Silva out.
Ron (MD): With all do respect, "on the feet" in MMA includes kicks and muay-thai. Roy gets killed in the cage with Anderson, even on his feet.
so b.j.penn is training for your boy florian by playing air hockey and swimming in hotel pools.does that surprise you?
Nothing BJ Penn does surprises me. I wouldn't be shocked if he called Kenny and asked to train with Kenny to prepare for Kenny.
You know I'm not serious in the least bit, hahaha!!
Dave, I'm pretty sure Mr. Canseco is not worried about his safety..... after all, he IS one of the origional bash brother steroid twins.
Yeah, Greg. Canseco's not a safety-first guy.
Do you think Silva, by no fault of his own, has set the bar too high for himself in the eyes of the masses?
There is something to that, Clay. His performances against big names like Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson were so impressive that there was nowhere to go but down.
Also, I think Florian is dedicated to constantly improving himself and treats MMA as a serious business whereas Diego is a bit more into the limelight and maybe a bit too egotistical to understand the importance of working with elite trainers (such as Ken does with Mark Dellagrotte).
I will agree that Florian is eternally dedicated to improving as an MMA fighter. But I think you might be selling Diego a little short. And I know you know your stuff, Brendhan.
Jon did you see that steroid freak Greg Valentino on Outside the Lines? How would he do in the octagon? You can't armbar those monsters!!
That was ridiculous, huh.
I think the Scottt Smith after fight celebration with his kids should occur more often. Makes fighters seem less viscous and more like a normal athlete. Thoughts?
It was interesting to hear Scott Smith's take on bringing his kids into the cage. Strikeforce approached him about it before the fight, and he agreed, provided he wasn't too beat up. Then, lo and behold, Smith gets bludgeoned but wins, and his poor son is in the cage asking Daddy is he's okay. It was a seminal moment, but I know Smith didn't love that his kids had to see him in that state.
Will the ufc be resigning Chuck, and if not do you see him fighting for another org?
I think the UFC will allow Chuck one more fight against a lower-level opponent. I would be shocked if Liddell signed elsewhere.
Your Celtics got any shot or has the gas tank ran dry?
Gonna be tough. A lot of energy expended against the Bulls, and they have no size. I love Perk, but he can't do it himself.
So what up with your boy Benji Radach, is he a sore loser or does he have a legit beef?
Radach doesn't have a legit beef, if you ask me.
Hey Jon, which UFC fighters in your opinion are in need of a move up or down in weight classes?
Well Justin, the obvious one would be Anderson Silva moving up to 205. Most guys are where they belong.
If I was Dana I'd bring back Ortiz for one more fight. A nice way for Chuck to end his career don't you think?
That's a thought. I still think that's not a risk the UFC wants to take.
The Spider and Roy Jones Jr agreed that they would fight under MMA rules, and Dana shot the idea down. Does that surprise you?
Answered earlier in the chat, Josh. Scroll up my man.
Jose Canseco's fighting skills - -47
Works for me. 68 was a bit high.
phil baroni move over new quote of the year Jon Anik: (1:52 PM ET ) Nothing BJ Penn does surprises me. I wouldn't be shocked if he called Kenny and asked to train with Kenny to prepare for Kenny.
care for the lashley sapp fight?
I care about everything Bobby Lashley does in MMA. I truly think he is vested, talented, and will be good for the sport.
Jon are you a fan of Leben? He is a beast, I want to party with him
I'd love to have a cold one with him. He's a warrior. Just needs to put the needle down.
What would it take to get Mousasi into the UFC so we could see him fight legitimate fights?
Some of the hardcore fans might remember Mark Coleman bringing his daughters into the ring after Fedor destroyed him back in Pride... Most awkward MMA moment of all-time. IMO, kids in the cage = bad idea.
I read about that recently. I would agree with you, Ken. It's a recipe for disaster. I'm all set with Scott Smith bleeding on his kid.
After the Fedor and Barnett fight, given it happens. What other options other then the UFC does Fedor have?
Well, he would be a free agent, so there would be several. Of course, Fedor wants and deserves the big bucks. Would Strikeforce make a run? Doubtful. I know Bellator could use him for a possible heavyweight tournament! I can dream, right?
Buy or Sell: Bobby Lashley's new nickname "The Dominator".
I love ya Jeff, but is that all you got? A bit trite for me.
Jon my dream list of Silva fights to close out his contract if all goes well against Forrest, and then GSP: 1. Forrest 2. GSP 3. Rashad/Rampage and then 4. Fedor at 205!!!
I think most of MMA Nation would agree with you, JP.
More likely to see in the future, fighters retire with honor like Randy did the first time or fighters continuing past when they should. I think I know the answer. Why can't they see that their glory days are behind them. Is money the big blindfold.
For most fighters, money would be the blindfold. But for Liddell, I truly believe it is about finishing on a high note. His legacy hasn't really been compromised, but I'm sure he's fearful a lot of fans will remember his demise as much as his rise. Most of us will always remember Liddell as a great striker and champion, but the recent images of the Iceman getting KO'd are indelible. They just are.
I didnt come up with that atrociousness!!! MFC is promoting him with that moniker!
"Brutal" Bobby Lashley
That would be amazing to see. But would Bellator be able to give Fedor strong enough competition?
Well, all it would take would be 1-2 top heavyweights in the tournament with him. I think the bigger issue might be money.
Will the Canseco fight be broadcast in the US? Not a good model for the advancement of MMA, but as a baseball fan Id love nothing more then to see his head get kicked into the seats.
Not exactly sure. But I am sure you will be able to find the video if you want to.
Lot of great questions today jonny! MMA nation is growing. If forrest does pull the upset does that put him in line for a title shot?
Thanks, Nate. To answer your question- Absolutely. He'd be in line for a title shot, perhaps a rematch with Rampage, and any other huge PPV fight.
Hey jon, wanted to know your thoughts on tom atencio fighting in an mma fight. good for affliction and for the sport in general? also, does this deminish Dana's credibility as a "badass" fight promoter?
Good for Tom for getting in the cage. But I don't think it diminishes Dana White in any way. Should I not be allowed to call Bellator's fights because I've never taken a jiu-jitsu lesson? Not sure that makes sense.
This is my fifth time trying. Are you not going to give me an opinion on Sanchez/Guida match?
Here you go, JR. Remember, chat queue is exploding, so I may not always see your question. I think Sanchez will win rather easily. Unfortunately, I think Clay Guida (of late) has made a living just surviving and fighting conservatively. Don't think that approach will fly against a motivated Diego Sanchez.
Dream 9 will have a live showing on HDNet
DREAM 9 (featuring the Superhulk Tournament that Canseco is part of) will be shown live on HDNet.
MMA Nation is all over it.
If Bellator really is headed for ESPN2 next season that has to open some potential television doors for MMA Live, no?
Nothing is guaranteed yet on either front, Dick. But I hope they both end up on ESPN2!!!
Isn't professional wrestlers having success in MMA the worst thing that could happen to the sport? What next? Hulk Hogan vs. The Natural?
Paul, most pro wrestlers would struggle in MMA. It just so happens that Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley are supremely gifted athletes, and those two really are good ambassadors for the sport. Now, a huge influx of average pro wrestlers crossing over could adversely impact MMA.
Did you see Brock's hunting video yet? That dude is like a little kid when hunting. Too funny!
Brock's the man. Watched it twice.
Did you see the Fedor vs. Aoki thing. It looked like WWE to me Aoki was smiling the whole time. The whole thing just looked crooked. If I payed I would be demanding my $$$ back.
It was really just an exhibition between two of the most popular fighters in Japan. Nothing more, nothing less. Entertainment is a huge part of all fight cards in Japan.
I'm sure if Tom Atencio wanted to fight Dana White, Dana would be MORE than happy to do so.
I'm not so sure, Marc. Atencio would have nothing to lose. Dana? Can't lose to the 't-shirt guy', right?
I think that if the ufc was as big as it is now then maybe brock and bobby wouldnt have gone the wwe route
Good point. Both guys crave real competition, but saw the dollar signs in WWE.
tom atencio is a joke for calling out Dana, so i guess david stern should quit cause he never played point guard for the knicks, that guy fails hard!!
Just finished a noob in my BJJ class with a gogoplata. I cant recall ever seeing that in the octogon, but I havent seen a lot of old pride matches. you or anyone else seen one pulled off?
Nice. I know it's been done, but can't reference one off the top of my head. That's what MMA Nation is for.
your thought on whitehead vs randellman
Has it been signed? Not sure which Randleman will show.
The other thing to remember is Brock and Lashley were top-notch amateur wrestlers. So if anymore pro wresters want to transition to MMA, they better have a huge boxing or amateur wrestling background.
I disagree with the statement that Chuck could not KO the Spider. He would have a decent chance if Silva was tied up and Chuck had a baseball bat.
Dana probably has 35 pounds on Tom.
Hey JR from daytona, when I'm bombarding Anik with 1,000 questions, it's hard for him to get to everybody. lol
How much does it kill Mir that Lesnar is perhaps the biggest draw in the UFC. Even if he beats Lesnar, Brock will still be selling more PPVs.
I think Mir has accepted the fact that Lesnar is a huge draw and makes more money than he does. What Frank can control is winning the fight. That's his singular focus.
In you mind who is next big figure in MMA
I get that question all the time. More often than not, I answer GSP. But since he's already arrived, a few young guys I think are on the brink of stardom: Eddie Alvarez, Luis Cane, Shane Carwin. I also think the ceiling is very high for Steve Cantwell, despite a recent loss.
Nate, Shinya Aoki landed a gogoplata from mount position. Nick Diaz finished Takanori Gomi via gogoplata at the first and only PRIDE FC show. Also, Brad Imes finished 2 or 3 fights in a row with one. Impressive for a heavyweight.
Jon, I know you see maynard as being deserving of a title shot, and it seems that the ufc wants the sanchez/guida winner in the picture, but I think Griffin, Huerta, and Sherk are all more deserving. Are those guys getting passed over as well?
Well, Sherk certainly has a case for a rematch with Florian, should Kenny get by BJ. Not sure I feel you on Tyson Griffin or Huerta. Griffin lost to Frankie Edgar, and some feel he should've lost to Clay Guida (a spilt decision victory). If Huerta beats one high-level guy (such as Griffin or Maynard), I would think he'd be worthy.
That was supposed to say "first and only U.S. PRIDE FC show." I believe it was PRIDE 33, same one that Hendo knocked out Wanderlei for the belt. And, Jon's boy Smoking Joe got KO'd by a flying knee by Robbie Lawler...
You know Villasenor would've won the rematch. Hopefully, it'll happen. Smokin' Joe gets no love. I'd like to see him against Scott Smith or Lawler.
How do you feel about the most recent UFC roster cuts? All warranted? If a guy can't beat the top notch guys, isn't it better for him to go to a different promotion and be the champ there?
I think all the cuts were warranted. Only guy I feel for is Jason MacDonald, but even he understood the decision. As for other promotions, there are no guarantees that these guys would be champions. MacDonald wouldn't be the best MW in Bellator, for example.
Mr Anik, Over an hour and a half and you are still chatting strong. You are the man!
Winding down here, Bobby, but the questions keep coming in, so trying to stay strong.
Hi Jon, if you had to pick a boxer of the past 10 years who would have done well in MMA, who would you pick? I go with Lennox Lewis. And please don't say Mike Tyson!
Bernard Hopkins. That dude can do anything he puts his mind to. Not the most athletic guy, but an absolute mastermind when it comes to fight preparation and game-planning. He's also the most disciplined fighter I've ever been around in any combat sport.
JOE COMES THROUGH!! Thanks! Its just kind of difficult move to pull off on anyone who has any BJJ skill. Jon, what submission is your favorite to see?
An inverse triangle choke!
Does anybody out there remeber Fitch dominating Alves, and subsequently what GSP did to Fitch last year?
I think we all do, BT. But Alves is a different animal now.
I am out of questions and tired of typing. You are a machine!
Well, I guess I'll stop down there! Thanks to all for a great chat today. Be sure to check out Episode #52 of MMA Live tomorrow. A few special things planned for our one-year anniversary. Also, please check out my Bellator broadcasts at www.bellator.com. I'm off to Corpus Christi, TX! Until next week, be well. -JA
