Chat with Bill Williamson

Mike, San Diego

BW - The rules for your Live Chat seem complicated - is it just me not understanding, or are they really as simple as just hitting your lunchbag? Can you let us know if it is as simple as you say? Thanks!

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

OK, that was really lame, Mike, but thanks for sytarting us off, tough guy.

Saul Garcia: San Diego, CA

I have to be honest, as a Charger fan I cringe every time I see the San Diego Injury Report. It's constantly been our pro bowlers, especially towards the end of the season. Right now we have Gates, Williams, McNeil, Merriman, and LT coming out of two post-season injuries...is our team becoming injury prone or are they just getting old. How worried should we be?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

Well, Saul, the Chargers are getting older, so you always have to worry about injuy. One of these postseasons, though, the Chargers are going to get a dose of good health. They are due that's for sure.

Elias (Blackfoot, ID)

Do you feel the Raiders are actually building this team the right way? They have young talent and they haven't signed any of the guys people thought were "destined" for Oakland?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

They are trying, but there are still issuses there. The key to the whole thing is Russell and if he can develop.

Buckley, Chico, CA.

Is there any chance Garcia will not be the starting QB by game 5?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

I think the only way Garcia takes over for a healthy Russell is if he fails in the first half. He'd have to be really, really terrible to get yanked after the first month of the season.

Sean (Philly)

Have you seen DHB at Raiders camp yet? How does he look in person?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

Minicamp starts Friday. I look forward to watching him.

Alex (Durango, CO)

Why are the Broncos getting railed so hard by the media about trading a future first round pick for a second rounder when it has been done many times before? The Panthers have done it two years in a row now...and they were coming off a very mediocre year last year with no guarantee that they would have a late pick this year.

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

I think the reason is because Denver didn't make it a conditional first rounder. The Broncos have both their own first rounder and Chicago's first rounder as the final peice of the Jay Cutler trade. If the Broncos made it that the Seahawks would get the worst of the two first rounders, people would haveliked the deal better.

Ray, El Paso TX

Hey Bill, will Moreno and Ayers start for the Broncos week 1? Does Alphonso Smith just play in Nickel and Dime packages, or will he press for a starting position opposite Champ Bailey this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

I think Morneo and Ayers will start and Smith will be the nickel. No doubt about ti. These guys will all make an impact.

Larry (Pasco, WA)

Hey Bill. Thanks for posting my ?Sound off Comment? on Merriman. I wanted your opinion on the wait and see approach the Chargers are using with Merriman coming off the injury. It seems to me AJ Smith is being rational while most fans are not. No GM is going to sign a player to a long-term deal coming off that type of knee injury, without seeing him play in a season first. What do you think?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Anytime Larry, thanks for playing along. I think Merriman will be unleashed. If he has a big season and the Chargers' defense is much better, San Dieog will have no choice but to re-sign him.

Mike, Oakland

What do you see as being more important to the Raiders getting to at least .500 this year- their run defense or their passing game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

The passing game is the big key for Oakland.

Chargers fans (Still complaining, CA)

You see Hochuli is chatting tomorrow?! O boy I can't wait to give him what for!!!

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

Be nice, please. The man is giving his time to talk to you folks. Give him a break.

Daniel (Lexington, KY):

What about Jack Williams? He seemed to be a promising young player, but with Smith there will he get a shot?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

The drafting of Smtih was not a good sign for Williams. But that's what happens when teams switch coaches.

Danny (colorado springs)

you answered a question about Anotonio Cromartie moving to free saftey and any true charger fan knows that he likes to tackle as much as Deon did....but why not Quentin Jammer? he racks up the tackles year in and year out!

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

If a corner in San Diego moves to safety I think it might be Cason.

Andy (KC)

KC seems to be ignoring any name free agents. Do you hear anything about possible acquisitions?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

The Chiefs have about $30 million in saalry cap so they will be connected to the names available but they have been very queit.

Bill, City of Industry, CA

It seems like a deadly game for the Broncos to be relying on Orton - seriously, Kyle Orton?? - for this upcoming season...does anybody have confidence in this organization?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Josh McDaniels does and that's all that matters right now.

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Josh McDaniels does and that's all that matters right now.

Anthony: (New York, NY)

What grade would you give Pioli thus far with what he's done this offseason (trade, draft, firings, hirings, and FA signings)? A explanation for your grade would be appreciated.

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

I'd give him an imcomplete because they have been so quiet. But getting Cassel was a big move.

Rick (Long Island, NY)

Bill, call me an orange colored optimist, but do you think Orton behind a first rate line, more playmakers than he's ever had before, and even a slightly better defense than last year can at least have Denver at 8 or 9 wins? I know it's not great, but it would be a solid first year for the new regime...

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

They had 15 wins the past two years with Cutler. I don't see Denver better with Orton, especially with such a bad DL.

zach orlando

What sort of leash is on Mcdaniel in Denver? With a division with Oak and KC, fans will want to see some victories, if he goes 5-11 do you think he's out

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

I think he will get at least two years.

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

I think he will get at least two years.

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

I think he will get at least two years.

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

I think he will get at least two years.

Marc ( City of Brotherly Love)

Hey Bill multi question here. Does Pat Bowlen owe the Bronco's season ticket holders a partial refund? Also isn't Denver drafting ANOTHER RB like the octomom going out and adopting another kid? What on earth is McDaniels doing out there?

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

A refund for what?

Robert in Mississippi

Bill, who will be the Broncos starting QB in 2010? Orto, Simms, Brandstater, or a high draft choice like Colt McCoy or Tim Tebow? Thanks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

I don't know how they will get a top QB with just one first-round pick. I don't think the Bears are going to be one of the five worst teams in the league.

Weber, San Francisco, CA.

How does anybody not take Crabtree ahead of DHB???

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

All it takes is one, Weber.

Ryan (NJ)

BW, y r u so hot on Cutler? Yes, he was a good QB, but he was a punk. He would flip out on teammates who made mistakes, yet he threw the 2nd most INT's in the league and no1 yelled at him. Say wat u want, but I think now with him gone and less crying bout ppl messing plays up, and with Moreno and McD's system, I think Denver's O may not get as many yards, but will score more. And also I think they will turn the ball over less. and in turn, the O will b better, Your thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

I guess I like 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterbacks.

Marc ( City of Brotherly Love)

A refund for that team he let McDaniels field. How long will it be now before they find Elway's heir apparent again?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

Teams chase superstar QBs for years. Denver is chasing again.

ryan (sd)

Any update on Lorenzo Neal wearing silver and black

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

No. Oakland has a minicamp on Friday so maybe he wll be there. The team, reportedly, is also talking to Michael Pittman, who'd aassume a fullback role.

Mike, Oakland

Arent all the Crabtree lovers the same people who said, "How do you take Edge over Ricky Williams?" Edge fit Indy better and DHB fits Oakland better. That simple.

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

Yeah but, James wasn't considered to be a late-round pick.

Ray (El Paso TX)

More Sacks this year, Tyson Jackson, Robert Ayers, or Larry English?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

English because he is the best natural pass rusher of the three.

Alex (Durango, CO)

Is Cutler really a superstar QB? He put up gaudy numbers, but he makes some terrible decisions and has been flat out bad in the red zone since he came into the league. 16th ranked scoring offense last year...

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

He's not a superrstar yet, but he can become one.

Dave, NC

Do you think DeMarcus Russell is a franchise type QB? Personally...I don't and feel he got drafted 1st overall because of his bowl game. He was an avg QB that had a good game at the right time and got blown up by the media. Thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

Russell has a long way to go. He has some skills, but he isn't even an average NFL starter yet.

Ryan (NJ)

BW, in my previous u said: "I guess I like 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterbacks." Yea, every1 knows the probowl is BS. Clady didnt make it, who as we all know he deserved it. And Favre did make it, as u said b4 didnt deserve it. So My question, other than the big arm and the BS pro bowl, wat other merits does he hav? He has a lot more detriments to his game then merits I believe

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

He's not perfect, but do you really like Orton better?

Ron (Denver, Co.)

Hey Bill, since the Broncos skipped out on drafting a DT in the draft, what are the chances they put together a trade w/Cleveland for Rogers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

Post-draft trades are difficult to pull off.

Joe (Muscatine, IA)

Hey Bill, Can you tell the future? Who will be the breakout player for each team in the AFC West? Thanks!

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

That's a fun one. Let's give it a shot: Den: LB Wesley Woodyard. KC: DT: Tank Tyler. OAK: TE Zach Miller. SD: CB Antoine Cason.

Brett (San Fran, CA)

Who is the starter for the niners week one?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

I'd say Shaun Hill.

Brett (LA)

The drafting of Alphonso Smith isn't a bad sign for Jack Williams. A rookie free agent starting over him last year (josh bell) was.

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

Fine point, Brett.

Adam (Jersey)

Hi Bill, I don't really understand the Garcia signing in the first place. The Raiders obviously want to throw downfield and Garcia can't throw the deep ball at this point in his career. Plus if you're looking for a mentor for Russell, wouldn't you want to find a veteran QB that doesn't have happy feet?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

If Russell gets injured or flames out, at least, Garcia is a solid, experienced veteran

Kristofor (Sioux Falls, SD)

Bill, Vegas set the over under on Denver at 7.5. Im betting the under, what are you taking?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

Purely for entertainment: I like your chances, sir.

Ryan (NJ)

Wat rookies in the AFC West have the best chance of being Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

Folks, I have to skip a little early this week. Acutally, I'm late but I love doing these chats. This will be the last one until next week ... Moreno and English.
