Fantasy Sports w/AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (2:59 PM)

Good afternoon all! We're filling in this afternoon for the TMR, but we hope you'll still stick around for all the fantasy baseball goodness. Who's up first?

Peter (Seattle, WA)

Hey AJ, I love these chats. I'm an Alex Rios owner and times are tough. Do you see him turning it around in a meaningful way or should I be worried? I'm not one to give up on my players early, but yikes!

AJ Mass
  (3:00 PM)

I've got Rios just outside my Top 50 hitters right now, but even though I see some slight improvement on the horizon, I think this is essentially the 2009 residence for him going forward.

Ryan: Philly

Stuck at the SS position, who do you like more; Teriot or Colaspo?

AJ Mass
  (3:01 PM)

Still think it's Callaspo, because of the average.

jerome (naples,fl)

lineup locks for the week at 7pm, should i bench a banged up pedroia for robinson cano who is cooling down....

AJ Mass
  (3:03 PM)

Pedroia should be back on Wednesday, so you're likely giving up two games at most. Still, it's iffy, so I'd take the surer bet to give you a week of games, Cano.

Kevin Slowey (Minn.)

Am I as over rated as Gavin Floyd? Why does every site out there still maintain constant Manpanion crushes upon me?

AJ Mass
  (3:04 PM)

It's the zero walks and the return of Mauer, which most feel will lower the ERA to respectable levels. I lean towards that camp myself.

Tom (St. Pete)

Cameron Maybin sent down to AAA. Will have any fantasy relevance later this season? How about 2010?

AJ Mass
  (3:05 PM)

He'll probably be back in a month or so, but I think he's proving to be another of those Quad-A fantasy team killers.

Mike (Boston)

I just traded Soria for Cain, what do you think of of those two going foward?

AJ Mass
  (3:07 PM)

I think Cain might struggle a bit to get victories, but at least he appears to be healthy, which is more than I can say for Joakim right now.As long as you have other save options, it probably won't hurt you long-term.

Tommy Hanson, GA

When am I getting the call? AAA is boring...

AJ Mass
  (3:08 PM)

Whenever whatever blackmail Jo-Jo Reyes is holding over the organization no longer has any legs.

Jacob: (The Island)

Any word on Reimold today? Looking for a sleeper power bat in a mixed league. My nana would be a Pie upgrade.

AJ Mass
  (3:09 PM)

All depends on the Scott MRI, which should come down tomorrow. If they need to make a callup, he's the logical choice....

John (Amherst, MA)

Is Phil Hughes another over-hyped Yankee prospect? Would you keep him in an AL keeper league over Porcello, Cecil or Hochevar?

AJ Mass
  (3:11 PM)

Well, of course he is. Would you even have been watching his first couple of starts this season if he pitched for say, Pittsburgh? I'm not saying he can;t become a serviceable MLB arm, but right now, he's fourth of those four.

Bryan (Tampa)

Sell high on Aaron Hill and Adam Lind?

AJ Mass
  (3:12 PM)

I think Lind will continue to put up the numbers for some time, and I'd hold on to him. Hill is leveling off from the blazing start and is a good sell-high candidate, though by no means am I suggesting the start is a total fluke - just that he won't maintain it going forward.

Lisa (Watertown, MA)

I am SO tired of seeing Boston fans, such as John from Amherst get posted, representing all of us BoSOx fans as whiny Yankee haters.

AJ Mass
  (3:13 PM)

You're right Lisa. You're not all whiny. Some are self-righteous Yankee haters.

Lance Berkman (Houston, TX)

Is there any reason for my fantasy owners to not be looking to trade me for a cheeseburger? Will I ever turn this around and make them look like geniuses for keeping me?

AJ Mass
  (3:15 PM)

Well it's not as if the power hasn't been there. The average is certainly ugly enough to make you want to rush out to In-N-Out Burger, but at least he's still giving you fries, if not the tasty vanilla shake.

AJ Mass
  (3:15 PM)

Have I mentioned I missed lunch?

Miltie (Breezy Point)

My brother offers ridiculous trades all the time to everyone.. like this doozy- J.Santana & H.Matsui for CC Sabathia, Sizemore & Crawford. How i can stop the madness?

AJ Mass
  (3:16 PM)

Don't respond to the offers. At least he's active, if not annoying... and hey, you never know - he might throw an offer in there one day that you do want to grab.

Matt (Erie)

I just picked up Adrian Beltre off waivers. He has certainly struggled so far but what do you think of him from here on?

AJ Mass
  (3:18 PM)

Not much. I have to admit I'm quite disappointed in Beltre. I thought he'd come out of the gate like gang-busters, but so far he's barely rosterable. Get out the rosary beads...

Steve (WA)

Would you trade ManRam now or wait out the suspension? I need help in all pitching categories except K's and SV's. I could also use another bat to help replace him, but don't think I can get anyone close via trade. Your valuable thoughts please?

AJ Mass
  (3:20 PM)

If you're struggling, and you can get something now to help you, you make a deal. Look, Manny is out until July. If you're going to be out of the race by keeping his *zero* on the bench until then, what difference does it make if he comes back hot? None.

Samer (Austin, TX)

Is Eric Stults worth a flier? I don't know much about him but his numbers are decent. Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (3:22 PM)

He's worth a flier, but he's not overpowering and walks far too many hitters. He's benefiting from a faboo offense more than his own talents, but that's why he's a flier and not a "lock for 15 wins."

Bob (DC)

Name game: Pierre or Fowler? Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (3:22 PM)

Pierre. Especially while he's hot. I like Fowler a lot in a keeper format, but not for 2009.

Brad (St. Louis)

Do you see Adam Jones ending year with 25+ HRs and 20+ steals? Him or Pence?

AJ Mass
  (3:24 PM)

I think Jones has Top-10 potential and he's definitely ahead of Pence by a mile in my book. Not sure he gets 20 SBs, but the HRs are definitely doable.

Santa Claus

Alexei Ramirez.....flop this year huh?

AJ Mass
  (3:24 PM)

Let's just say more teenagers believe in you than Sexie.

Fletch (Provo, Utah)

The more and more prospects that get called up, the sooner David Price and Wieters will get the call right? Isn't this what sets the date? So everytime a prospect makes his debut, we should be slobbering over the Price callup around the corner, right???

AJ Mass
  (3:26 PM)

Yes, Fletch. The "Super 2" system means that the date of callup compared to other prospects determines when the clock starts on the road to free agency. So the more debuts you see, the more likely it is that you'll see Price and Wieters, et.al.

Paul (Newington, CT)

Many experts are high on Shin Soo Choo. What do you project for his final #s this year?

AJ Mass
  (3:27 PM)

Serviceable hitter, but nothing special. I see him as a borderline Top-100 hitter for the year.

Marco (NYC)

One last time...rank: Jason Kubel, Travis Hafner and Russell Branyan.

AJ Mass
  (3:28 PM)

Branyan by a nose over Kubel.

pierre chang (dharma initiative)

miles and i have been having a beer and discussing some fantasy... in a keeper league is it about keeping the "best" player you have or the most needed position? and do you think juliet should go ozzie guillen on kate? what is kate's purpose anymore? just to annoy? reminds me of joe girardi..but i digress

AJ Mass
  (3:30 PM)

In a keeper it's about keeping the best value. Pujols for $60 is not as good a keeper as Reyes for $10 regardless of who you think is better or what position they play.

Pete (North Ridge, CA)

Hey AJ, I'm a Joe Mauer owner. In my league Wieters is a FA. Do you think it would be wise to try to deal Mauer now for offense or pitching help - and grab Wieters to plug in when he gets the call? Or will the drop off between the two weaken my team?

AJ Mass
  (3:31 PM)

I'd grab Wieters now and then trade HIM for pitching before he plays and lowers his value with a slow first week.

Call or Fold (Annie Duke)

Is it safe to drop Matt LaPorta? Even in a keeper league? He's just not playing and I don't want to sacrifice this season.

AJ Mass
  (3:32 PM)

Why on earth would you drop him in a keeper league? If you're down on him for 09, then you trade him - but to cut him outright is sheer folly.

Wait a minute...

If no one picked up Wieters why would they deal pitching for him before he plays??

AJ Mass
  (3:34 PM)

Touche! The league is likely just waiting for the callup on him. Once it is announced, whoever has Wieters is the only one who can trade him.

Stack (NJ)

You have really red hair...

AJ Mass
  (3:35 PM)

Actually, no I don't. It's just the lighting, but thanks for staring lovingly at my picture...

James Loney

Will I ever hit a HR?

AJ Mass
  (3:36 PM)

Absolutely. Will you be on my roster when you do? Highly unlikely.

Joao Gomes (Brazil)

Wow, you're usually so pessimist. Big surprise seeing such high expectations for Adam Jones.

AJ Mass
  (3:37 PM)

I'm not usually pessimistic - however, a large number of questions that we get during chats are about guys who have been hot for one week out of their careers, or haven't even played in the big leagues yet, asking if they'll be the next big thing. Odds are, in most cases, no.

Livan Hernandez

Halfway to 300 and a HOF induction, think I'll get there?

AJ Mass
  (3:38 PM)

And then there's Q's like these...

Fish in Dc

Arod, Lowell or Cantu rest of the year?

AJ Mass
  (3:39 PM)

A-Rod. But I do like Lowell and Cantu just fine as well.

Micho (Lansing, MI)

Deal Matt Kemp for Prince Fielder?

AJ Mass
  (3:40 PM)

Not a chance. I like Kemp just fine... unless of course you feel this burning desire to have as few steals as possible.

Fox (Washington, DC)

He's not a sexy name, but who would say no to a 2B/SS hitting .287 with 9 SB? Who is Emilio Burriss and why isn't he getting play? I want to believe...

AJ Mass
  (3:43 PM)

Not going to Scully you... he's been hot as of late, but it's only one good week again. That .287 looked about .200 lighter last week and we're talking all singles.

Chris (Commack, NY)

Is Chris Young (AZ,OF) worth keeping on my team or should i drop him and look for other options?

AJ Mass
  (3:44 PM)

I'd let him free... if he comes back to you, call the police.

Big Joe (Hamilton, NJ)

AJ. I just picked up David Ortiz off of waivers. Do you think he'll be startable any time soon or is he really finished?

AJ Mass
  (3:45 PM)

I do think he'll come around a bit from the low, dark place he is today... but he's a shell of his former self.

Leo-NYC

Who would u rather have ....v-Mart or Ellsbury...and weiters available???

AJ Mass
  (3:46 PM)

V-Mart. Beyond a doubt.

Steve (Denver)

Thoughts on Randy Johnson as a two start pitcher? He has a great matchup against the Nationals tonight, but I am concerned about his 2nd start against the red hot Mets lineup.

AJ Mass
  (3:47 PM)

I would be too. Just from memory, the Mets have always pounded RJ. If you can swap him out midweek, go ahead. Otherwise, it's probably not worth it.

Kraig Stewart (Victoria, BC)

Would you ever have two catchers in your lineup?

AJ Mass
  (3:48 PM)

If it were V-Mart and Mauer, then sure. But generally speaking, if I don't have to- then no.

Todd (philly)

A trade was submitted in our league - Rollins for Broxton - caused a stir - what are your thoughts to the fairness of this trade?

AJ Mass
  (3:49 PM)

*Best* reliever for a hitter who was drafted Round #1 in many leagues who is playing well below expectations. I've no issue.

Mike (Charlottesville)

AJ, help me out please. Tell me Bedard will fall apart and be less valuable than James Shields going forward.

AJ Mass
  (3:50 PM)

Sorry, I'm on the bus going to the other side of town on this one, Mike.

Ray St. Louis Mo.

AJ a little advice please, Who has a better fantasy year from hear on out? J.Upton or Willy Taveras? Thanks a lot.

AJ Mass
  (3:51 PM)

Upton.

Dan NYC

I have Fucal but I can get Hardy or S. Drew. Who is the most valuable?

AJ Mass
  (3:52 PM)

I think Hardy and Furcal are pretty close in value. I was a lot higher on Drew pre-season, so if he's 100 percent, I still like him to have the best final numbers of the trio.

Ryan (NYC)

PLEASE HELP!!! I have Ian Kinsler and Aaron Hill, and poor Mr. Hill is just rotting on my pine (I can't fill him in at Util because I have Adrian Gonzalez and Ryan Howard at 1st and Utility). I need pitching badly. What kind of pitcher should I be targeting for Mr. Hill? And, yes...my offense is pure filth.

AJ Mass
  (3:54 PM)

Go for the gold. Right now Hill is my No. 5 hitter. So you should get back no less than someone you think is Top-20 overall arm.

Gifford Ocean NJ

Who would you rather have this year Sandoval or Asdrubal Cabrera?

AJ Mass
  (3:55 PM)

Sandoval over Orlando and Everth, but not higher than any other hitting Cabrera.

Ray (York, PA)

AJ, Do you like J Zimmerman over Davies and Guthrie?

AJ Mass
  (3:57 PM)

Not just yet, Eventually, I think he's a better pitcher. But for this season, I prefer Davies, slightly more than Guthrie with the kid lagging behind a bit.

Blake (Nasvhille)

So much for Russel Martin being dropable and Beltran's power outage. Got any more hasty fantasy advice for us?

AJ Mass
  (4:00 PM)

I still don't want Martin in a 10-team league right now. And as for Beltran, what I had said was that for a .400 hitter, being ranked 35th or so amongst hitters was pathetic for someone of his abilities. Yes, he's had a great week and in now Top-20 again - which goes to proving my point that he HADN'T been contributing up to his potential previously. I never said cut him for Brett Gardner, now did I?

AJ Mass
  (4:01 PM)

And on that player hater note... we'll call it a day. We're back at 10 AM tomorrow for another chat, so please feel free to drop by before the two minute warning to spew your venom! Hugs and kisses! Toodles! See you the next time on Villa Alegre!
