Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Hey sports fans!! I'm here and ready to rock and roll. Great questions already pouring in. Oh, by the way, I'm in a great mood-"La Traviata" is playing and if you can't appreciate this masterpiece you have no ear (or ears perhaps). So don't bring me down people. "you're analog players in a digital world".

Harrison (Toronto)

Why does Stan Van Gundy insist on playing JJ Reddick over Courtney Lee? Why, why, why?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Hmmm, Lee just broke his face last week. JJ has been playing well and defending well, but shooting poorly. Lee will get more run on Thursday I'd guess.

Ron Jeremy

Am I still coaching ORL next season?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Too funny not to post.

JJ Reddick (Orlando)

Why the hell was I guarding Ray Allen when he hit that dagger three in the final minutes? Does coach not know Courtney Lee is a way better defender?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

People, please. Ray Ray was held in check by JJ all game, don't trash him now.

Anthony (Cali)

Have you seen anything on Rubio yet? You think he'll be a solid PG in the league? Thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Been watching tons of tape on him. Brilliant vision and feel. He'll be better than solid.

Paul (Oak Park, IL)

La Traviata is one of my top 3 favorite operas and I've seen it twice! If you have any feelings at all, you shouldn't have a dry eye at the end if you see a well-done production.

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

It's just as amazing to listen to as see, I'm sure.

Nick (NYC)

I know he's your guy, but can you admit Stan Van Gundy cost his team a win last night?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I'd like to have seen more post touches, but do you think he told his guys NOT to throw it down low? Me either.

Jon (Des Moines)

What are your thoughts about Maynor in terms of NBA potential? Seems like a guy Minnesota could look at later in the first round, possible after getting a Harden type guy early.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I'm very impressed with him. He's a legit first round guy for sure.

Kris (Simi Valley, CA)

"It is not a prop for prop's sake!" Ocean's Thirteen, if you're scoring at home.

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Maybe my favorite of the trilogy. I already have in mind what Ocean's 14 should begin with...they are all at a funeral. You know why.

biff (seattle)

Sir, should Big Baby have needed to apologize to that kid in Orlando?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

All I can say is, if that was my son and me sitting there, I'd be saying to him, "if you want me to pay the big bucks for floor seats, be ready to take a charge or two".

Vin (Hartford)

I went to the Uconn-Pitt game and didnt know anything about any players (except Thabeet) but came away from that game being blown away by DeJaun Blair. He absolutely dominated Thabeet and was amazing. What do you think about him as a pro?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

He's going to be a monster, I'd guess. On the right team he'd be a legit ROY candidate. And he just turned 20 last month.

Mark Cuban

Do you think I'm a coward for not even going to Denver tonight?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

No, the story should not be about you.

Evan (NY)

Coach There is a rumor of TMac to Knicks x Hughes, Mobley contract.. I really like it for both teams, your view?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I think it could happen.

clark -durham nc [via mobile]

who would be a good locker room/character guy for a young team to pick up this offseason?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

There are many to choose from, including some vets playing in the euroleague right now.

Dave (Chicago)

I read everything about the draft, and by my calculations, you have Calathes, Clark, Blair, and Holiday in your gym. Others too. Does anyone else have that kind of talent, and do all those idiots who trash you think you are just fooling everyone? Because it seems more and more studs seek you out. Long live Thorpedo!!

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Honetly, I'm the least informed guy on earth about that kind of stuff. I just worry about who is in our gym, and I'm just as blessed to be coaching guys like Tony Gaffney and Tyrell Biggs than those other guys. Teacher's just want interested students, and my gym is loaded with them.

James (England)

Hey thorpey, after watchin big baby in the playoffs, do you think he can play this well consistently? and how good can he be?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Sure!! This is who he is, solid guy now that he's got the shot.

Steve (Cleveland, Ohio)

I think it does not matter who the Cavs play. The Magic and Celtics do not stand a chance against the Cavs. They are playing at to high a level and they will never blow huge leads in the fourth and lose. Lebron James will never allow that to happen.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

I'd chill a bit Steve.

Bill - chicago

Do you really think the Bulls (Vinny) and TT should part ways? I really believe Tyrus can be a very good player and he's only 22! What will it take to mend this? Love the chats, best in the biz!

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Bottom line, they have to learn to trust each other. If they do, great things can happen.

Geoff Petrie

if I don't get the 1st or 2nd pick .... and get stuck with the 3rd or 4th .... who should I be looking at??

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Trading down.

Chad, Walnut Creek, CA

Is there a team in the NBA that listens to their coach more than the Celtics seem to listen to Doc Rivers? Also, in your opinion where does Rondo now rank among the leagues top point guards?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Rondo is just below CP3 as I see it now. He's just so dynamic. Yes, the players really do trust Doc.

Jared (Atlanta)

I laugh whenever I see you listed as an NBA "Insider". Seriously, who do you know to get this gig? GTFO and let somebody who knows what they're talking about handle this chat...

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

I knew Chad Ford, thank goodness. BTW-I edited this, because Jared made a far worse comment. Have a nice day Jared.

Mickey (NYC)

I'm Mickey Abbott! I stood in for Punky Brewster when all of you was nothing. Would Calathes be able to fill into Hinrich's role with the Bulls if they trade Kirk this offseason?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

He's very different than Kirk, who's more of a scorer. Calathes is a pass first guy who can score. And not close to the defender Kirk is yet. That line is the best, by the way.

Eric (New York, NY)

Thorpezilla!! As ridiculous and undeserved as it would be, should SVG be worried about his job? Two fourth-quarter meltdowns make the "Master of Panic" label hard to shake, and with D12 going off on him today, it could prove an untenable situation. Whatcha think?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

No question-when the franchise guy makes those comments, anything can happen.

John (CO)

Cool, could you edit my statement so it is enciteful?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Insightful.

Winston (Los Angeles)

Who would you rather build around: CP3 or D. Rose?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

CP3.

Brian (Michigan)

I like it when you post the trolls. It's funny and not alot of chatters have the ability to laugh at themselves. It makes for more entertaining chats.

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

As i told my wife and mom (who do not like those comments at all)-it makes for a better read and let's face it, this is reality. Some people like me, some don't. Why try to hide that?

Blake (Chicago)

Word up Thorpedo! When you say, "on the right team he'd be a legit ROY candidate," by "right team" do you mean da Bulls???

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

No, actually. One that has a need for a 4. Bulls have 2 in TT and Noah.

MIchael, Australia

Do you like the look of Patty Mills or not??

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

I think he's ok. There's a place for him in the NBA, for sure.

Chaz (NJ)

Can Adam Morrison bounce back from a rough start in the league? What would it take?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

He can, but he needs to get started asap.

Steven (Philadelphia)

David, first of all, great job on your scouting reports. They are must reads. My question is, I often read comments that you only write nice things about students of yours. How do you respond to that?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Thanks. Here's what I think-I've spent 22 years building a reputation, why would I demean it by lying about guys? Better to be truthful in every respect and live with the consequences.

mike (akron)

Are you impressed with Delonte West's play so far? Might be the best perimeter defender the Cavs have.

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

He's been terrific. It would be interesting if he ends up being a difference maker in a Cavs win over Boston, wouldn't it?

Jim (DC)

Sorry David, but you are absolutely wrong about Redick's defense. It is awful. I saw him fall down after Jesus Shuttlesworth went to his right...no move...no crossover...went to his right...and JJ fell to the ground...TWICE. I went to uke when he was there, and I am aware of his abilities and his limitations. He can't guard NBA 2 guards. On another note, who do you think the Bullets (yeah, I said it) should pick up in the draft?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Jim, you know not what you speak of.

mjs, miami [via mobile]

as a coach youself thorpe, how do you feel about the bashing Stan Van Gundy is receiving? Ever since Shaquille ranted aginst him, i felt the media has placed a microscope on him undeservedly. He would very likely be NBA Champion Coach Stan Van Gundy if Wade's rib would not have gotten hurt back in '05. do u agree with the criticism or is it just a case of the media looking for an easy target?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

It comes with the territory. There is some truth to it, but he's still better than 95% of the coaches on the planet.

Richard (Denver)

David love your chats. You definately know what you are talking about, but do you think you might have been wrong about Kleiza. He looked a lot better last year. What went wrong?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

I think the lack of a contract hurt him some. It's only natural.

Jeff (Ft. Collins, CO)

What's the funniest thing you've heard an opposing fan yell at your team? Most offensive?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

It wasn't funny, but once, in a big game at a tournament against the home team, a dude came out of the stands behind us a dropped his gun into our huddle during a timeout. Fun!

Jason (Nashville)

Sometimes I like reading your chats more than I like watching basketball. Weird.

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Kings vs. Clippers?

jameer nelson

So, have I proven my true worth the Magic, by being injured in teh playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

I've known all along. You are just as important to that team as KG is to Boston.

Jeff (Philly)

Is there any reasonable scenario in which a guy dusts off his coaching book, and comes back after 7 years out of the league to success? Alternatively, just tell me we are getting Eddie Jordan.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Westphal and Collins? Ouch babe.

Bob (Atl)

Coach, do you think it's weird that a grown man with kids loves your chats and looks up to you? Because I do, and I do.

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I'm a grown man with kids, and I love reading other chats too! But thanks man!!

Ethan (Austin)

What do you think of LA's yo-yo impression? Good enough to carry them past Denver, or are they about to run into a buzz-saw?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

it would be a great series, full of more ups and downs. Listen, Denver is lucky it's not 2-2, right?

Steve Francis

Hey where did I go, i thought i was in the NBA

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

I know that answer, and will address it later.

RR (NJ):

i am really interested in Biggs. What's he got?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Biggs has been a shock to us, but we were told he'd be a lot better than what he showed in Pitt. Very skilled, and strong, mature pro. He'll make a lot of money playing ball. Has a chance in the NBA too. And he's an incredible person. I admire him greatly.

John ( utah) [via mobile]

I grew up in the cleveland area as a kid and have had my heart broken many times with all of our teams! I was at the browns game for the famous drive! I was a season tickit holder the year the indians went to alcs only to see them fall apart to boston! Now here come the cavaliers they look really good right now but when it comes down to it does this great cavaliers team have a shot at bringing a title to the best fans in the world after 45 long years? Or will we go back to our old saying ( maybe next year!! )

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

John, stay tuned. Your team has every chance to win it all.

steve battle creek ,Mi

david look forward to ur chats all week! my son is 10 and plays AAU ball, he needs work on his dribbling. What drills/routines can be done to help him? btw he plays like joakim noah - heart, toughness and hustle.

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Don't worry about the drills. Just keep him dribbling, after his schoolwork and chores are done.

Sam; Montclair, Ca

Should PJ consider starting Farmar in lieu of Fisher?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

I think so.

Nate mich [via mobile]

What makes the cavs so good?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Incredible chemistry. Great defense. Ball movement. Shooters. A coach who gets it now. And LBJ.

Scott tasmania australia [via mobile]

Nba fans in australia Wonder what is espn's obsession with lebron james. He still hasnt won anything yet. So untill he does can u at least be partial towards other players who have at least won a championship ring. Thanks

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Scott, just watch him play and them get back to us.

Christian, Australia

G'day from the land of downunder. Mate should the Bucks trade Redd for a PG or PF. (David West?)Do something with their pick even. Cheers ay.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

I think they should consider any move.

Brandon Rush

My end of season burst of good play- anomaly or trend of good things to come?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Depends on what you are doing this summer!

Fahim ( LA)

Hey DT (home with fever) should lakers start bynum over lamar? i think with no Yao bynum can do some damage. thx

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

I liked Bynum's energy, and the idea of two big dudes wreaking havoc inside is good.

Kevin (NY, NY)

I heard you had Tony Gaffney working out at your gym. Good overseas career in his future? The guy got so much better each year of college.

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

If he's not an NBA player I might just quit and become a shepherd. He's almost Tyrus-like as an athlete with a 7'2 wingspan with skills and a super hot motor that never stops.

Bob, Denver

Have you used the phrase "you'll get nothing and like it!" yet to Spalding?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Incredibly, no.

Tommy (CT)

Who have you been most impressed with on the c's this postseason? Rondo? Big Baby? or as of last night Marbury?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

All 3, plus the heart of that team. It's inspiring.

Justin Behling (Boyceville, WI)

Hey David, my friend and I have a disagreement on something. He says between Kobe Bryant and Larry Bird in their prime, Bird is better. I say it's Kobe without a doubt. What do you think?

Xander (Philly)

Take away Lebron, do the Cavs win 15 games?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Yes of course.

Terry (Portland)

Thorpe what is your thought on the kid dropping out of HS for EuroBall?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I mostly worry about my kids. And no matter what kind of talent they have in dancing, singing, acting, sports, brains, etc-they are staying in our home until they graduate high school. Period.

Rory(Sacramento)

If we assume that the Kings get one of Griffin or Rubio, how do you feel about their core going forward? How long should it take for them to be really good?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

They are still 2 years away because they have so many young guys, unless they add some vets to the front line and find a pg if they get Griffin.

Eric (Chicago)

Wouldn't it be smart for a team like the Thunder to trade down in the lottery to grab Blair. He doesn't require any shots from their young studs and will purely be focused on doing dirty work.

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I think a few teams are thinking of trading down. Blair is, at worst, a dominant rebounder. But he might end up being a true low post scorer.

Kikonux (philippines)

Hey david.. Just want to take some pointers on shooting.. My hands are too small to have a good grip on the ball. . How do i improve my shot?thanks..

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Use your guide hand to hold the ball onto your shooting hand for as long as you can.

Will(Orlando)

Dwight for Bynum and Farmar?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Not going to happen.

Willie coralsprings florida [via mobile]

Any chance the orlando magic make a trade for vince carter this off season

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I'd guess not.

Jon (Boston)

Without Lebron the Cavs are a .500 team much like the Bulls.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Assuming you gave them a lesser starter, yes.

Muayad (NYC)

Coach, what do you think of "playoff fouls"? for me it's cowardly for 7 fotter to knock a 6 foot PG ass just because they can't stop him. Man up and play better defense in a lgit way, no?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

No. Shot to the teeth works for me.

Justin (Minnesota)

Who's your pick for the NBA title?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

I'd lean to Cavs now.

G (NYC)

David, Why did you not answer the guy Justin Behling's question about Kobe and Bird?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Do I really need to?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Bird, Bird, Bird.

Andy (LA)

Of the 8 teams to make it to the conference semis, which ones are likely to get much better over the next few years?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Orlando, if left intact, will be dynamite.

Blake (Chicago)

Assuming the Wiz get Arenas and Haywood back healthy (plus a high draft pick) and Bogut/Redd are healthy for the Bucks, the East is going to be much better next year. What do the Bulls need to do this offseason to move into the upper tier of EC teams?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Right now, they have to take care of the BG issue.

Rory(Sacramento)

How do you feel about Donte Greene's future?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

50/50 he stays in the league. 20% chance he becomes a solid starter. But I like him a lot, potential wise.

Sportstown USA

Picking the Cavs is easy--why not challenge yourself a little?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

You mean, like pick the Thunder?

Chad (Bloomfield Hills, MI)

Is The Closer really the #1 cable series of all-time?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

I'm not sure how official all these ratings are.

Kenny(Philly)

Who would look better in a 76er jersey, Flynn or Lawson?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Lawson.

Ted, The SLC

I see the Top 5 players in Lakers history (in order) to be Magic, Kareem, Kobe, Shaq, The Logo. Agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I do.

Casey milwaukee [via mobile]

Who are the bucks looking at in the draft

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

It's a long list right now.

Jeff (NYC)

Buying the theory that the Knicks drafting Steph Curry would help lure LeBron to NY since they're good friends?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Maybe the silliest thing I've ever heard.

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Sorry everyone, but I have to leave a bit early today. I'll make it up sometime soon. Be safe and enjoy the games!!
