Chat with Bill Williamson

Larry (Charlotte,NC)

More pure talent- Chargers or Cowboys?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

Let's get rolling, everyone. As this point, I'd say San Diego has more talent than the Cowboys, but it's close. Less recent drama as well.

Larry (Charlotte,NC)

Will Denver be a running team or a passing team and how many wins do you see?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

The drafting of Knowshon Moreno tells me Denver wants to grind it out on the ground.

Mike (Kansas City)

Hello, Bill. What is the deal with Dorsey in KC? I know he isn't necessarily one of Pioli's 'guys,' and he's not the perfect 3-4 lineman, but he's pretty darn talented. This reminds me a bit of Mangini in NY, running off good players who didn't fit his precious scheme (that worked out great). What about playing to the strengths of your roster? Thanks for letting me rant.

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

I agree with you. Pioli took over the Chiefs. He has to see what is on the roster. Dorsey was a top pick and he is a talented guy. He needs be to given the chance to succeed.

Corey (Seattle)

How do you see the Chief's running back situation shaping up? Will LJ be on the team? Will Charles see an increased role?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

I think it's getting late for the team to cut Johnson. I know he is under the assumption he will be in Kansas City. I'd guess he'd be the guy at this point.

Bo (Honolulu, HI)

You didnt really mention Mike Mitchell in your write up on the Raiders minicamp. How'd he look?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

I mentioned him. He looked like a rookie when I saw him. He is fast and he is a hitter. He has a chance.

Mike (Kansas City)

Are you going to come clean on your comment during last week's live chat that the KC off-season is "incomplete" - others are saying it was one of the most active off-seasons of all teams. Plus, you said the rules were simple - the rules to get on your live chat are very to comment?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

Mike, relaz bro. The Chiefs were given a incomplete because they didn't address a pass rusher and they still have a ton of money. Came clean. Feel better, Mike.

Bo (Honolulu, HI)

Are the Raiders going to sign any veteran receivers? I just dont think DHM, Chaz Schillens, and Johny Lee are gonna cut it.

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

I wouldn't be suprised if a vet is brought in. But there aren't many saviors out there at this point.

Nick (SLC, UT)

Did the Chargers sign King Louie Sakoda or are they sticking with Nate Kaeding?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Kaeding will be the guy in SD.

Mike, Oakland

Other than the Raiders, is there any other team in the league without an offenive coordinator? Can this work?

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

Cable, Tollner and Hackett are all seasoned vets. It can work.

Brent (PA)

Is LT on the decline?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

He might be. He'll be 30 season. He has been injured the past two postseasons and his yardage slipped last year. That's evidence. Still, with that said, I think he can be a quality player in 2009.

Levi, Modesto

How long before Cable is replaced? Game 7 or 8?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

He'll make it through the season.

Ethan Raleigh, NC

How do you like the Chiefs as a sleeper team this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

The definition of sleeper teams is they come out of nowhere. Every year it happens, so it would be foolish to discount any team. But for the Chiefs to be successful, they will need fast development on defense. I like the offense. It wouldn't blow me a way if Kansas City made a vast improvement. To be honest, I really hope one of the three teams, Kansas City, Denver or Oakland, makes some noise. Last year was brutal in the AFC West. I'd like to see an Atlanta or Miami-like story develop from thus division.

Nick (SLC)

Will Larry English be an elite pass rusher in the NFL?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

It's too early to tell, but he has a lot going for him. He is a hard worker, he is talented. He has a lot of defensive support and he has good coahcing. Plus, he looked great at minicamp a couple of weeks ago.

Fake Bill (ESPN)

In other words KC, Denver or Oakland, please do something so my job isn't so boring next year!

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Hey Fake Bill, it was never boring. But a story change would be fun.

Danny - San Diego

Bill - What's your prediction for the outcome in 09 for the AFCW as of right now??? (mine 1. SD, 2. KC, 3. Den, 4. Oak)

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

As of right now. That's the key, folks. SD: 11-5. DEN: 7-9. OAK: 6-10. KC: 5-11.

eric steeler nation [via mobile]

hey man. how does it feel to cover the worst division in football? 7-9 wins that crappy west.

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

Right it right, Champ. 8-8 won this powerhouse division.

Brandon (AZ)

Which rookie running back will have the best opportunity for the best production this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

I think Moreno has a shot. The Broncos are ready to unleash him as a three-down back.

Kevin (Dallas TX)

Bill, who do you see as the Charger's #2 WR his year? Floyd looked really good in patches last season, but can he be a legit #2?

Jeremy (jacksonville, nc)

Bill, i am disappointed that you have chosen to ignore my question about Jamarcus Russell. I can only assume that you have not posted it due to the fact that I singled out your colleagues at ESPN as the pundits lobbying against Jamarcus Russell. I still enjoy the updates you give in you blog however I feel that you may lack a little bit of integrity.

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

Thanks Jeremy, it gives me a chance to explain myself. I get hundreds of quesitons. I only see about 10 at a time. So keep trying. If your question is respectful and I read it. I will try to answer it. BW.

Jason (Bmore)

Is it time the Chargers admit they drafted a "buster" with Craig Davis?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

Maybe in one more year. He needs to get healthy,

Kevin (Dallas TX)

Hey you posted my question but didnt answer that a form or torture? Are you mocking me? Chargers #2 WR will be _______.

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

No torture, friend. Not sure what happened. Jackson and Chambers will be the guys. Floyd can be a decent No. 3 but he has to sign his tender and get back with the team. He missed training camp.

Jeremy (jacksonville, nc)

will the raiders continue to feature Justin Fargas as the primary back or will we see McFadden and Bush get the majority of the carries and relegate Fargas to his rightful spot on the bench (barring injuries)?

Bo (Honolulu, HI)

What do you think of the Lorenzo Neal pickup: impact move, nice move, or no big deal?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

I like it a lot. He will help. He always helps. In fact, San Diego could probably still use him.

Bo (Honolulu, HI)

What happened to the answer to Jeremy's question?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

There most be a glitch. Sorry. It looks like it is being posted. Anyway, I think McFadden is the team's choice to be the top guy. Still, all three have to be used. This is the team's greatest strength. it can't be wasted.

Hootie (KCMO)

Hey Bill quick question- Are the Chiefs going to see any production out of Brad Cottom or are they going to look more like Arizona'z offense with virtually no TE production? Thanks

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

There will be a big Arizona influence for sure. I think Cottam will be a blocker for now.

Levi, Modesto

Even if Cable comes out of the gate 0-5 or 0-6? He will make it through the entire season? With Al Davis still alive?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

If any coach starts 0-6 he can be in trouble. But he'll be fne.

Ben (Lancaster)

7-9 for Denver? Where does that optimism come from? I really see a 4 win team.

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

That's possible if the defense is a disaster.

Ron (Denver, Co.)

Bill, you mentioned earlier that the Broncos have been using newly acquired Ron Fields as their NT. With a strong showing, could you see 2nd year draftee Carlton Powell supplanting him?

Ron (Denver, Co.)

Bill, you mentioned in a column earlier that you see the Broncos using newly acquired Ron Fields as their NT. With a strong showing, could you see Carlton Powell stepping in this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

It depends on his health and if he impresses the new coaching staff.

Oral Roberts, Colusa

Who wins the division?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

San Diego, I do believe.

jeremy again (jacksonville, nc)

given their quick finish and the fact that they held 4th quarter leads in the 1st sd game, buffalo game, and miami game, i feel that the raiders may be closer than most think to being a good football team. they were legitimately only a few minutes away from being 8-8 last season. you assesment?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

That's what the optimists said last year. They are what they are a team coming off a 5-11 season in which they were often trounced.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Hey folks, great hour. Thanks. Talk to you next week.
