Fantasy Baseball w/AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:57 AM)

Good morning gang. We're ready to talk fantasy baseball for another hour this morning, so why not get right to it? Who's up first?

Tim (ABQ - NM)

Peavy to the CWS?...Really?

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

This rumor has been building up steam over the last 24 hours, and appears to be all in Peavy's hands, since he has a no-trade clause. We should know something before the day is out. But almost certainly Poreda would go to SD and possibly Beckham as well.

Joe (Deep East Texas)

Andrus a decent replacement for the DL bound J. Reyes?

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

Yuck. I'd rather go with a SS-eligible Jerry Hairston or a Christian Guzman if they're available.

Dave (Kansas)

AJ, does this open the door for a promotion from the Padres minor league system? If so anything we should know about?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

Too early to tell since the terms aren't fully confirmed yet - I've heard several versions of the deal. I would think if Poreda and/or Richard are in the deal, one would move right into Peavy's spot. Poreda had a terrific 12-K outing at Double-A last night.

In the proverbial vacuum ... what is the minimum bat for Greinke right now? top 10? top 15?

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

I haven't had time to re-boot my rankings this week yet, but as of last week, Greinke was my No. 2 pitcher and in the Top 10 overall. The next best pitcher was #37. So I'd have to settle for no less than Top-20.

Steve (NYC)

What would this trade do to Peavy's value? Does this help it, hurt it or leave it relatively unchanged?

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

I think it's about the same. He's 8-8 in Interleague play for his career with a 3.29 ERA and teams are hitting .235 against him. Obviously its a small sample size, and the difference in ballpark may hurt his ERA/WHIP a bit, but I think we can expect more of the same from him overall.

Federal Bailout (DC)

What's the latest on Josh Hamilton's groin???

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Day-to-day, but with a day game after a night game today, I don't think we see him until Friday outside of a possible PH role.

Craig Stammen (Washington, DC)

Why am I not being discussed at all? I have a 1.80 ERA in 40 innings at Triple A-Syracuse and make my debut tonight. Should I be picked up after I impress tonight?

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

Well for one, Manny Acta made the call on demoting Cabrera to the pen so late that most people haven't heard of this call-up yet. With that Nats bullpen, I can't expect many victories from Nats pitchers, so unless he K's close to 10, I'll stay away.

Kunal (Forest Hills NY)

Should i drop JJ Hardy, i need SS help bad, and i have Asdrubal as SS eligible.

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

Asdrubal better than Hardy, yes. Is Hardy better than what's on your waiver wire? That's the question.

Ted (ATL)

given infante's injury, how much playing time does martin prado end up with? would you rather have prado or rosales as an aramis fill-in?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

The thing is, Infante was just about to take over as an OF backup, so I don't think that's a spot we ultimately see Prado in too often. I'd prefer Rosales.

Struggling Weeks Owner (Everywhere)

Which of these very unattractive options do you like at 2B? Nix, Maicer Izturis, Counsell, Punto, Thurston, Ryan.

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

Counsell, although Ryan might be an option for steals, but I worry about the PT.

Eric (Ontario)

Does Gordon Beckham start right away for SD if he's in the deal?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

I'd have to think so. He's so close to getting the call with the Sox, and Luis Rodriguez is no Sexei Alexei.

Walter (detroit)

Would you trade Liriano while he still has some name value, or does he just need to build up arm strength & will be worth the wait? Thanks AJ!

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

I'm trading him. I was trading him before Mauer came back, thinking I could use that as a bargaining chip. Now that Mauer is back and the ERA is still 6+, I'll let him be someone else's problem.

Curious (D.C.)

C'mon AJ, what are your thoughts on the 24 finale?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

Have none... haven't watched since the infamous cougar episode... that's Tristan's department.

Kurt (NYC)

You buying Garrett Atkins? Some clown just dropped em in my league and I am intrigued.

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

I'm more intrigued by Seth Smith in that lineup. But if he's better than someone else on your bench, he's worth grabbing in the hopes of a rebound.

Mike (DC)

Another homer for Inge last night. At what point in the season does he usually collapse? Are we past that? Can he continue to hit like this?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

I hate the general idea that a player *must* collapse because he can't possibly keep up his current start. Just because he's never done it before is not a good enough reason for me to assume he can't do it this year, if he's doing it. I think he'll get 20-25 HR's and with catcher eligibility, he's a keeper for the rest of 09.

Steve (NYC)

FYI, Gammons reported that Beckham is not in the deal

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

If Peter said it, I believe it.

Pete (NC)

AJ, I'm in a 10-team H2H league with individual outfield positions. I have Bay, Damon, and Lind at LF. Which is the best sell high guy right now?

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

The whole concept of sell high has to do with the perception of others. I would rank the players as Bay, Damon, Lind right now. But I think many other owners would want Lind and his potential over the other two... making him the best sell high candidate, even though I do not think he is the highest of the trio. Make sense? Of course, there's no harm in saying "one of the three for sale, take your pick and make me an offer" and take the best deal you get.

Who could be in the Peavy deal? Flowers? Dye? Floyd?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

All of the rumors have Poreda and Richard in the deal. Gammons has said Beckham is not. I've heard it is a 4-for-1 deal, so I expect it's two other prospects, but I've heard no names.

Dennis (Milwaukee, WI)

Worried about Stephen Drew? I drafted him as a top 5-7 at the position and getting NOTHING.

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

I'm definitely worried - because his defense is lousy lately. That speaks to me of a mental issue more so than a physical one, and is far more troubling.

Walt (Timonium, MD)

Been offered Cabrera for Wright straight up. Pull the trigger?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

There's a lot of Cabreras out there. If not Miggy, then not a chance.

Skywalker (Endoor moon)

If B Abreu got dropped in my league is he a must pick up, in a vacuum of course?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

Luke, I'd wait and see how bad the toe injury is before snatching him up, because if it lingers, he's going to be affected. Other than that, yes, he's a solid pickup. Say hi to the Ewoks for me.

Raz Al Ghul (League of Shadows)

Is Edwin Jackson a Good replacement for Liriano because he is killing me. what do you think?

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

I think so... apart from Verlander, he's the only other *sure thing* to stay in the Detroit rotation when Bonderman returns.

who's your favorite Fantasy BB player ever?

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

Dante Bichette, though he wasn't the nicest guy in person.

Picked up REYNOLDS and used him yesterday! You think he might be breaking out and worthy of everyday start?

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

Five steals every day? No. But I also was lucky enough to re-insert him in my lineup yesterday (moreso because of the double-dip than any hunch) and I haven't taken him out yet... I'm certainly staying for now.

Greg ( Ellicott City )

am I selling too low on BJ Upton if I trade him for Derek Lowe?

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

Are you playing Upton now, or is he gathering dust on your bench while your pitching staff falls further back in the standings. In an H2H, I might wait for Upton to turn things around, but in a roto-style, I'm making the deal pronto.

Mike (Fort Worth, TX)

I need to get Lackey off my DL. Who would you drop: Jared Weaver, Scott Baker, or Randy Johnson?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

I'm not cutting Jered, and I think I'd let the unit go... this is indeed his last hurrah.

James (Newport Beach, CA)

Regardless of Beckham in the SD deal, do you really think he gets the call soon (as in June 1)? Stashable in a keeper?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

Ramirez is hitting .215. Lillibridge is hitting what - .160? As soon as the PTB allow Ozzie to bring him in the mix, he's there.

Start Lester against the hard hitting Jays?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

Check out the Daily Notes - I have him 11th...which is better than average.

Cowboy Mike (Calgary, Canada)

Thoughts on Ramon Troncoso?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

He's the Hong-Chi Kuo of 09. Good for a spot save or two, may get some vulture wins. Obviously it's Broxton barring injury, but Tronosco can help your fantasy team.

Max Scherzer (AZ)

You really think big, fat Bartolo Colon will out pitch me tonight. You do know I was drafted one pick after Timmy "The Freak" Lincecum?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

For one night? Yes. Yes I do.And remember Steve Chilcott? No? Exactly. Don't talk to me about draft order.

Robb (orange, ca)

What about Reyes? Is he DL bound?

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

I can't imagine he's not. I was in pain watching him attempt to play last night. I'd feel better about it if the Mets trade for DeRosa between now and Friday.

Start Dice-K off the DL tomorrow vs. Santana?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Forgetting the opponent, I might start Dice-K due to the dearth of pop in the Mets lineup with the mounting injuries.

Mark - Boston

Is Ty Wigginton better for my team than Josh Fields at Corner Infield?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

For now, yes, if only because Fields is thisclose to a spot next to Ozzie on the bench.

Kellis (San Diego, CA)

Are the Padres just brainwashed into the next year mentality? It's always about next year and never win this year.

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

It wasn't too long ago they were playing Game 163 for the playoffs, so I don't think that's a fair assessment. And when you're 10 games out in May, I can't blame you for being negative on 09.

Doug (NY)

If I could substitute myself for Beltre at third, should I?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

I think I'd give Steiny the edge over you, though you're just ahead of Rebecca from St. Louis.

Mike (Albany, NY)

AJ, tough to get a read of where experts rank Juan Pierre because he won't get steady playing time through the end of the year. For simply right now, where does he rank? Would you put him above Kemp, Granderson, or

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

For right now, he's a top-75 player. But nowhere close to Kemp or Curtis. However, if Ethier continues to slide, I can see Pierre sticking in the lineup even after Manny returns at Andre's expense.

GAMEL vs TWINS or REYNOLDS vs A's this weekend? Thanks

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

I'm going with the guaranteed at-bats... until Gamel gets consistent starts, I can't put him in there. Though that 9th inning stroke was pretty sweet last night.

Matt Wieters (NOT in the MLB)

How are Doug from NY and Rebecca from STL getting more consideration for playing time than me?

AJ Mass
  (12:03 PM)

And on that wacky note - I see we're out of time. Thanks to all for your questions... we'll see you the next time on Villa Alegre!
