Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Geez, can you believe the outcome of "Dancing with the Stars?" Sorry, had to vent. Still thought the guy was the best dancer. I promise I won't dance around your questions, though. Fire away.

Dan (DE)

Any news on Truex? or Almirola? The EGR cars have looked much better the last couple of weeks, do you think that will sway Truex's decision?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Treux is still pondering his future. I talked to him last Friday and he says all options are open. Almirola says EGR has a few potential sponsors that could put him back in the car for the second half of the season. That's about it on them.

Larry (MI)

Hey Newt, I don't know what to make of the whole Mayfield/Nascar circus that going on. Part of me is believing Jeremy, I mean why would he make so much noise and go as far as getting an attorney if he knew he was guilty?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

It is a complex situation. On the one hand why would he take such a strong stand unless he were innocent? On the other hand what would NASCAR have to gain by the negative publicity of a positive drug test on a driver? Typically the athlete denies, denies, denies. We've seen it in baseball and football. Usually the athlete is guilty. These drug companies don't typically make mistakes. That doesn't mean it's not possible and Jeremy seems passionate about his innocence. I'm still digging into this one.

Devin (Johnson City TN)

Fantastic article Dave, absolutely loved reading it. But here is one thing you left out when it comes to Dale Jr and crew chiefs. With Tony Sr, Dale won 1 out of every 11 races. With Steve Hmiel, he won 1 out of 15 races. With Tony Jr., he has won 1 out of every 65 races...I cant imagine that Dale Jr has somehow lost his driving ability. I just think when it comes to crew chief and driver, the two just do not mix setup wise.

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

Thankss, and the reason I didn't go into Sr. is Eury Jr. made a lot of the calls while Sr. technically was the crew chief. So to give al l the credit to Sr. would be unfair. At least Eury admitted if they don't make the Chase then he would expect a breakup. Here's my guess. JR Motorsports will switch to Cup and Eury will take over the Brad Keselowski program.

Jordan (Candor, NC)

Are there any names on the comment section that you dread seeing and reading their ideas?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Not at all. I love seeing all the comments. It's great to see what the reader thinks, even if I don't agree. If you all agreed there would be few comments. I do wonder if some of these people have lives, though. They always are online reading. But that's not a bad thing.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

Newt, any new rumors out there about drivers/sponsors?

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Just sent the latest to the rumor story we post every day. Take a peak. But for the most part all is quiet. That usually means something is about to happen.

Darrell (Petal, MS)

I know this is probably the craziest question you will here today. But if Knaus and Johnson win 4 in a row this year. Would you see Knaus taking a challenge and going over to the 88. I know Chad is a true competitor. Giving the 88 a championship would be like running a marathon. It would be the ultimate sence of accomplishment!!

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

If they win four in a row they'll go for five in a row. We were talking about this over lunch. Earnhardt would drive Knaus nuts on the radio if he bickered like he does with Tony Jr.

Glen, Fla

David. great blog about Shrub driving in the minors. do you know if he kept the prize money from his great win in the camping world east-west race or did he donate the money?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

That I don't know. Either way, it takes it away from a team that could use it. And his presence in the field keeps another driver from competing. I just don't like it. And this isn't a Busch deal. This is a Cup driver deal in general. NASCAR needs to step in and stop it.

Teresa Earnhart

Dale jr needs to decide whether he wants to be a celebrity or a race car driver.

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

If you spelled your last night right it might help.

Joe (Missoula, mt)

You got to feel for Eury Jr though, I mean how many times in this season has Dale just mixed a pit box? You have to place a majority of the Blame on Dale and not Tony everyone else can win in the Hendrick equipment, Dale just cant!

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

If you spelled your last night right it might help.

Adam (Galax, VA)

On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you rate this racing weekend?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

I'd give it a 7. I'd knock it up a couple of spots if they had the time scheduled where a driver or two could go for the double at Indy. That added some drama.

Joe (Missoula, mt)

Newt, This whole Mayfield thing has gotten way out of hand. Do you think Nascar needs to just come out and say what it is they found? Right now they look really stupid!

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

No, you can't blame NASCAR for not saying. Most sports don't. The offender, in this case Mayfield, has privacy rights. And if NASCAR said what the drug was in this case then it would have to in all cases.

Deuce (CO)

David, NascarInsiders.com called you out the other day on their website for your article about DEI where you didn't disclose that your wife is an indirect employee of that organization. How do you respond to that?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

I probably should just ignore. Any so-called expert that hides behind an anonymous name isn't worth addressing. I will say I accepted the invitation for the event before my wife's company took over the account or she was involved, that every news organization that covers NASCAR was invited and that I went on the chance that Teresa would talk, which she did. I would have gone had you invited me. There was nothing else to it.

Jake (Orlando, FL)

What do you think about putting a bigger points incentive on winning races to create more racing like last weekend?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

I'm not sure the drivers would try any harder than they are with more points, although I am in favor of more points for the winner. what I'd really like to see is the something to jazz up the first three segments of the All-Star race. Unless I missed something it wasn't very exciting until the end.

Devin (Johnson City TN)

While I must say I do not like KB driving in the East/West race, he was most likely using this as a test session for the Busch race later this year at Iowa. Remember...hes going for the title in that series.

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

That's still no excuse.

Larry (MI)

So does the big Camping World win count as part of the 200 wins that Kyle wants to win? In your mind, how big of an accomplishment is 200 wins if only 75 are in Cup?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

It's still pretty significant. And if he gets to 75 in Cup that would rank among the top five or six all time. I bet Kyle would take both right now if you offered.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

Jeff's back is concerning me more and more. If his problem gets unbearable, is it a no-brainer to see Brad in the 24 after the first pit stop of the rest of the races?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

It would have to be unbelievably unbearable to get Gordon out of that car. My guess is that if this procedure doesn't help he may have to consider surgery in the offseason. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Adam (Galax, VA)

With John Andretti running Indy, is this the first time an active Sprint Cup Series driver has run the 500?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Hardly. Tony Stewart ran both races twice on the same day. Bobby Allison ran it years ago. A.J. Foyt did as well. This is nothing new.

Jack (TN)

Should JEff Gordon be upset at Kyle for the wreck last week?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

No. All three were racing for position and for a million dollars. Stuff happens when all that is on the line.

Steve (St. Anthony, MN)

Hi David, Love your stuff! How serious is Gordon's back injury? Is it something that could make him think abut retiring earlier than he wants to?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

it sounds pretty serious. As far as long-range it's hard to tell. Even without the pain I doubt he'll drive much past 40. And thanks.

Matt (Chicago)

Do you think NASCAR limiting the number of Cup drivers in each Nationwide race would help? Having, say eight Cup guys (rather than 15 or so these days) would still put butts in the stands, yet give guys like Justin Allagier and Michael McDowell the opportunity to shine.

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

That has been discussed. Moreso, limiting the Cup guys to eight or a number close to it of Nationwide races per year. But you're right, the bottom line is putting fannies in the stands.

Bill (Jacksonville)

I don't know what drug he took, but it couldn't have been marijuana...otherwise he would have driven 5mph on the track.

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

Sounds like you are speaking from expeirence.

Matt (Ogdensburg, New Jersey)

david im trying to figure why not one change has been made to the 88 team i mean come on every hendrick driver and all the teams the share hendrick motors are doing really well and it seems dale jr is the only one having problems whats the deal

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

First, the driver doesn't want a change. Second, the crew chief doesn't. If Mr. Hendrick makes a change and they don't want it it's hard to imagine that will improve things.

norm, palm springs ca

David, Are all of the Penske cars running the new engine package? Any word on when Kahne might get this engine? Thanks

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Yes, all the Penske cars have the new engine. RPM will put it in one car next week at Dover. I'm guessing Kasey will get it.

dave reading pa

do you think the 88 will have a crew chief change during this season?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

If he doesn't make the Chase I do. Might as well start preparing for next season over the final 10 races.

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

If he doesn't make the Chase I do. Might as well start preparing for next season over the final 10 races.

Jeremy (TX)

Why is Hendrick taking so long to make a change? It is clear that the two jr's do not mesh well and haven't for a while, so is he waiting on complete devestation before making a change?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

As I said before, the driver and crew chief don't want a change, and Hendrick actually believes they are good for each other.

Devin (Johnson City TN)

You said NASCAR needs to step in and stop it...in your opinion do you think they will, or do you think they will continue to allow the drivers to race in any series any time, becasue it increases exposure and ticket sales. P.S. Im with you on this situation

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

They won't touch it. The bottom line in the sport is to make money. P.S. Thanks.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

On the basis of being All Star Champ in 2000 and no wins in 2009, is Dale Jr.'s only shot for the 2010 All-Star race (other than winning a race in 2009 or 2010) the fan vote? Or does the 2000 win exempt him for 2010 and he would have to win for 2011?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

I believe all post champions are invited. But they change the rules so much that may not be the case anymore. Good line, though.

Glen, Fla

what if shrubs final total is in the range of 30-40 cup wins and 160 in the minors. I am not a fan of cup drivers running a full schedule in the nationwide ot truck so maybe I'm a little on the bias side

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

That would mean he was a great Nationwide driver, and a pretty good Cup driver.

Bill (Jacksonville)

How do they split the million dollars...goes to team or specific amounts to driver and to pit crew?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Depends on the driver. Top ones get about 45 percent of the purse. The rest is split between the team and owner.

Deuce (CO)

Thanks for your response, I appreciate your honesty. How much impact will the issues of Chrysler and GM have on the sport next season. Will more teams run Fords and Toyotas?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

Thanks. As it stands now, both manufacturers plan to be around next year. You may have a few smaller teams switching, but the established ones won't move unless support is pulled.

Johnny (NY)

Hey David, Is it safe to say that we're seeing the Ryan Newman we came to know from '02-'05? Man that guy can wheel it. Guess it was Penske after all.

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

We are seeing the old Newman, but who's to say he wouldn't have done this n the Penske car that is greatly improved this year. Last I looked Kurt Busch was having a pretty good season and Sam Hornish Jr. is starting to come around. But you are correct to assume that the equipment was an issue the last couple of years.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

To allow incentive for the wins, I think they need to require that you be in the top 12 in points AND win a points race. This would make it so a Sprint Cup champion had to be a race winner. Wouldn't that be cool?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

It would be. Want Brian France's address?

Greg

Hey Daivd, I saw Jeffery Earnhardt's name the other day in the Camping world race. I think he got third. Thats Kerry's son correct? One of you said he's got a ton of talent?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

He was fourth, and that is Kerry's son. I never said he had a ton of talent, but he is competing in the Nationwide race at Dover and plans to run a full Nationwide schedule next season _ maybe under the DEI umbrella.

Larry (MI)

If JR Motorsports moved to Cup wouldn't Pops be a better choice? He has already been working with Brad and has had success.

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

They'd probably work together if Eury Jr. were to move over there. They were a pretty good combination with Earnhardt a few years ago.

Steve (St. Anthony, MN)

What do you think is the biggest story line as of today?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

The economy continues to be the biggest concern for all. The Mayfield stroy has taken on a life of its own. Wouldn't it be nice if we just talked about the racing? Nah. I love the drama.

Stu (Madison, Va.)

Which team will finish with more wins this season...RPM or Stewart-Hass?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Let me look into my cyrstal ball. It's going to be close, but Newman and Stewart will get one more than Kasey Kahne.

Matt (Ogdensburg, New Jersey)

hey david i was wondering if they move jr motorsports to cup do you think martin truex may make a jump to there i mean truex and dale jr are real good friends and what other drivers may try and make a move to jr motorsports

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Like the way you think. Honestly, as successful as Stewart-Haas has been, I believe Martin will want a more established team. Penske anyone?

Jeff (East Bay, CA)

What's up Newt! Ryan McGee places the over/under for SHR wins from here on out at four...Mr. Blount takes the under...what say you?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

I say under. Remember, Stewart won a non-points event in which he likely would have finished fourth or fifth at best had there not been double-file restarts and crazy crashes in the final 10 segments. They'll win, but four might be a tad high. Dang, I agreed with Mr. Blount. What's wrong with me? Just kidding.

Joe (Fleetwood PA)

Hi Dave, think Smoke can pull off the win again in the 600

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Sure he can. But he'll have to get past the No. 48 to do it. Jimmie Johnson looked strong those first 50 laps and in a normal race would have pulled away from most of the field.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

Per Nascar.com: "All past winners of the race earn a 10-year exemption from having to qualify via other means, such as actually winning races that count toward the points championship" This would qualify Dale Jr. for 2010.

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

Thought that was it. Thanks for checking. If we need a research assistant we'll be sure to call you.

Steven (MO)

He may not be as flashy or give a great quote all the time, but is Kenseth the top driver at Roush? Thanks.

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Carl Edwards passed him last year and I thought Greg Biffle would as well. But Kenseth is one of a couple of drivers to make the Chase evey year so it's hard to say he's not top dog.

Matt (Clatskanie, OR)

Do you think that Stewart-Haas, whether it be Tony or Ryan, have a shot at a championship this year?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

No reason to think otherwise.

Matt (Chicago)

Hey Newt, Kasey Kahne has scraped by with the old Dodge motor and is still within 100 points of the Chase. Does the new R6 from Dover on put him over the top and into the Chase?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Too early to tell. We're all assumiing it's jus t the engine holding him back. The weight of the car and other things also factor in.

norm, palm springs ca

I am curious as to why you are so hard on Kyle for running the minor race. Harvick and Kahne ran the same ran the 2 years prior but no comments on that?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

I thought I made it clear this wasn't a Kyle thing, this was a NASCAR thing for letting it happen. I don't think Harvick and Kahne should have been allowed, either. Sorry I missed that.

Marion sc

David, any word on Sadler? will he be in the 19 in 2010 or will sponsorship be transferred from the 19 to the 44 it just seems Sadler is always on the edge of getting let go.

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

No official word, but I'd be a bit nervous if I were him.

Glen,Fla

David. which event do you get to cover this weekend? Indy or Charlotte. I have already warned the wife and kids that Sunday is dads day with the remote control. this weekend is the mother of all race weekends for race fan.

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

I'll be at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, but I'll watch the 500 from the media center. Good luck with the remote.

Deuce (CO)

Yes we do want Fance's address.

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Was afraid you'd say that. Try Brian France, Daytona Beach, Fla. I don't have teh street number handy. Want his cell number?

Matt (Ogdensburg, New Jersey)

hey david do you think if they move jr motorsports to cup truex may make a jump there. jr and truex are real good friends and i think it would be a good career move and if jr motorsports does move up what drivers do you think might also may try and join jr motorsports

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Think I already answered this, but I wouldn't rule that out. My gut still tells me Truex wants a more established team. Even Earnhardt agrees with that.

Deb NC

If Truex does leave EGR where does that leave the merger? Will Teresa stay with Ganassi or just try and run Jeffrey in Nationwide under DEI?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Jeffrey is the future of DEI, or at least they hope he is. And I've said all along that DEI and Ganassi was a merger of convenience and they'll split when it makes sense.

norm, palm springs ca

David, Do you see Carls Edwards running more like he did at the end of last season as we head deeper into the chase. How can a team that ran so well last year, with the same car this year seem to have lost so much? Thanks

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

It happens. Look at Jeff Gordon in 2008 after his incredible 2007 season.

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

It happens. Look at Jeff Gordon in 2008 after his incredible 2007 season.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

Ha! I am right down the street, so no relocation needed. I guess if Dale doesn't win between now and the 2011 All-Star Race, the fan vote will be null and void. I smell rule change. Either the 10 year rule becomes lifetime or the fan-vote would vote two people in.

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

You may be onto something.

Steven (MO)

Do you think Kenseth, Edwards, Biffle, and Ragan can ever co-exist the way the Hendrick guys do? Thanks Again

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

They've done pretty well as they are. it's not a matter of co-existing. It's a matter of getting the best equipment.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

BTW - everyone's invited to my Coca Cola 600 tailgate. We're having my soon-to-be famous beef brisket.

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

I need an address.

Adam SC

David, do you think Kahne will make it to victory lane and make the chase this year and will the new engine be a big help

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

If ihe doesn't then he may start looking for a new team.

norm, palm springs ca

Thanks for the answer on the minor track racin. So you think its JJ returning to form at Lowes?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

JJ certainly looked strong winning the pole and the first 50 laps. He's due another win here. You can't keep a good team down forever.

Matt (NC)

Any chance Evernham might be a choice for the #88 if T Jr. goes?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

No way. He's said his crew chiefing days are over, that he might do an All-Star race for Gordon, maybe during his retirement tour. But he's not ready to go fulltime to the box again.

Larry (MI)

When will Kevin Harvick start to feel the heat from media and fans? He hasn't won a Cup points race in over 2 years.

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Harvick's lucky he replaced an Earnhardt and his last name isn't Earnhardt. Guess he doesnt' rank high enough on the fan radar for there to be an outcry.

Marc (Gulfport, MS)

David, try this on for size. If Waltrip decides to step out of the 55, I think that MWR would be nuts if they didn't make a run at Allmendinger. On the other hand, RPM would be crazy to let the Dinger go. The kid is a Chase driver with better equipment.

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Dinger signed a adeal that I believe includes next season at RPM. The MWR ride might not be a ba dplace to go. They're starting to get their act together.

Matt (Ogdensburg, New Jersey)

do you think they should try and bring dale jr's crew cheif from the nationwide series brian campe and make him his crew cheif in cup because dale jr has run real well in the nationwide series in the races he has run so maybe something clicks there that doesnt with eury jr. also if he would to get a win this weekend at lowes in his own car could the momentum carry over in his cup car.

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

He's been rumored, but Hendrick apperas set on letting Earnhardt sink or swim with Eury at least till the Chase.

greg (indianapolis)

Do you think that Dale Jr will make the chase this year? Why or why not?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

No. Nada. No way. Because he is too far back and his team hasn't run well and because there are too many good teams to pass. Not that it wouldn't be a great story. Speaking of stories, I have to chase one. I'm outta here. Thanks for all the great questions. Sorry I didn't get to all of them. Check in next week and I'll try to get to you.
