Chat with Page 2's Bill Simmons

Bill Simmons
  (12:01 PM)

I'm late! Sorry about that.

Bill Simmons
  (12:03 PM)

How 'bout the Clippers? You have to love the NBA, where the most incompetent organization in the league antagonizes its fan base, takes a dump on its season ticket holders for 2 straight years, refuses to fire a coach/GM with a zero approval rating and somehow gets thrown a life raft with the No. 1 overall pick. Where amazing happens.

perksa beast (boston, MA)

Which was greater: Blake Griffin's pain on hearing the words"Los Angeles Clippers" or America's pain on hearing the words "Kim Bauer" presaging the annual slide of 24 into the ridiculous?

Bill Simmons
  (12:04 PM)

I thought Griffin did an awesome job of hiding what had to be the most disappointing and frightening moment of his life. Either that or he was heavily medicated.

Bill Simmons
  (12:05 PM)

By the way, I have already typed more words than Dana White did yesterday.

Joe (maine)

Bill, your thoughts on the hilarious WWE/Nuggets controversy

Bill Simmons
  (12:06 PM)

I have requested Mr. McMahon as a BS Report guest. Let's see if he comes on. I think it's great publicity for the WWE obviously and I'm sure they will make the most of it. And by the way, don't blame Denver's owner - who would have ever thought that such a dysfunctional team that played no defense a year ago would be in the Conf. Finals???

Jack: Philadelphia

Dunleavy will draft the wrong Griffin brother to continue the single longest reign of imcompetence ever.

Bill Simmons
  (12:07 PM)

It's really incredible. I am positive they will screw this up somehow even though it seems impossible to do so when they have the No. 1 pick in a draft with only 1 sure thing. You know what really jumps out at me? how freaking horrendous that Zack Randolph trade was. It was awful when it happened... now it's like 7 times more awful.

Chris (PA)

Bill, thoughts on Rubio to Durant in 2010? I'm giddy about the thought, borderline elated, you?

Bill Simmons
  (12:09 PM)

I have never been more torn about anything non-Celts related. On the one hand, Rubio, Durant, Green and Westbrook... wow. Those are four of my favorite incoming picks of the past 5 years, I sung all of their praises before the draft as much as anyone. All on the same team?

Bill Simmons
  (12:10 PM)

On the other hand, it's so unfair for the Sonics fans and I feel terrible for them. They could have had the most entertaining young roster in the league and it got hijacked from them.

Jeff (Denver)

Do you think American Idol going up against LA/DEN last night allowed real basketball fans to attend the game, and will the American Idol crowd take over Staples for Game 2?

Bill Simmons
  (12:11 PM)

It's a great question and beyond that, it led to the single biggest parking quagmire of all time last night apparently. I thought LA's crowd was good last night and the game was superb. Best playoff game we've seen in 2 rounds since Chi-Bos Game 6. I don't think I fully realized how awful Round 2 was until I watched last night's game. Could be one of the great Conf. Finals ever.

Billy (Boston)

Any chance the Clipps trade the #1, you know, for some cash and a bag of used balls?

Bill Simmons
  (12:12 PM)

Here's what I would do if I were the Clips GM. I'd call Sam Presti (Zombie Sonics GM) and make him the following Godfather offer...

Bill Simmons
  (12:13 PM)

The 2009 No. 1 overall pick, our 2011 No. 1, and our 2013 No. 1 pick...

Bill Simmons
  (12:13 PM)

For Kevin Durant.

Bill Simmons
  (12:14 PM)

Think about it: The Zombie Sonics have no guarantee Durant will stay there in 3 years, he might flee for a big market. They could awap him into a hometown hero and build around Griffin, Westbrook, Rubio, Green and a boatload of picks...

Bill Simmons
  (12:14 PM)

And if you're the Clips, you have a franchise guy who might be ready to become a superstar next year - team him with Baron, Camby and Gordon, trade Kaman for something... that's a playoff team.

Garrett (Austin)

With your Godfather deal to the Zombie Sonics, would it include the rider "If Durant agrees to come to sleepovers at my house and refer to me as BFF Bill Simmons"?

Bill Simmons
  (12:15 PM)

Yes.

Brendan (New York)

You're not fooling anyone...you just want a reason to go to clip games next season.

Bill Simmons
  (12:16 PM)

I had already renewed my seats - one of the few to do so. I go for the other teams. I just want ythe Clips to be competitive enough that every game isn't over midway thru thr third quarter. Look, they need to fire Dunleavy RIGHT NOW.

Will (Atlanta)

Randolph, Camby, Kaman, Griffin. How do these four guys possibly fit into the same line-up. How does the notoriously cheap Donald Sterling cough up $16M a year to Randolph and $11M a year to Kaman when neither is his best post player? Randolph is untradeable. Camby - aside from being more valuable as a player than Kaman or Randolph - is the team's most valuable asset due to the 1 year left on his contract. So who stays and who goes?

Bill Simmons
  (12:18 PM)

They don't. Randolph is untradeable and it would be dumb to deal Camby when he's an expiring deal. The guy they need to move is Kaman who should have value. For instance, if I were running the Clips, I'd try to deal kaman to the Nets for Bobby Simmons' expiring deal and one of their crappy 1st round picks. Good gamble for the Nets cuz Kaman could thrive on the low-post in the East, and if you're the Clips, all you care about it cap flexibility and building around that Gordon-Griffin nucleus.

Mike (New York)

Wouldn't the Grizzlies take Rubio with the second pick? I don't think the Zombie Sonics have much of a shot at him.

Bill Simmons
  (12:19 PM)

People seem to think that Thabeet could be the No. 2 pick because Memohis already has Conley and needs size. That would be a classic Chris Wallace moment. Classic. Unprecedented even.

Bill Simmons
  (12:19 PM)

One more trade offer I'd make as Cllps GM: The No 1 overall for Rudy Gay and the No. 2.

Bill Simmons
  (12:20 PM)

If you're Memphis - you're basically building around Griffin and Mayo. Solid foundation. And we all know Gay will flee the scene in 2 years. So why not move now?

A. Jefferson (Minnesota)

Please come be my GM

Bill Simmons
  (12:21 PM)

Sorry Al - I've given up on your T-Wolves after they lied publicly about how many people emailed them about my GM candidacy. I don't want to work for liars. . I'm switching my focus to the Clippers and a Dunleavy coup d'etat.

Brooks (Chapel Hill, NC)

Watching the LA-Denver game last night, the touch foul that gave Kobe those two free throws really pissed me off. I've watched some great hockey games in past few weeks - couldn't the NBA throw me a bone and let the players decide the outcome? (pre-horrendous outlet pass of course)

Bill Simmons
  (12:22 PM)

Um, which touch foul? The Lakers got every call in the last 5 minutes. Could you narrow it down for me?

Tuck (San Antonio, TX)

Bill, if you're the GM of the Spurs what do you do to capitalize on the last few years of the Duncan-Ginobili era?

Bill Simmons
  (12:24 PM)

I would trade Parker right now for multiple pieces. I think they need to start the rebuilding process a little while keeping the Duncan/Manu foundation. For instance, a deal that makes sense to me is Parker to the Wolves for Randy Foye, the No. 6 pick and expiring contracts. Something like that. And if you're the Wolves, you'd do a deal like that because that gives you a foundation of Jefferson, Love and Parker... you need 3 building blocks to contend and those are 3 good ones. Reminds me of the Ray Allen/Boston trade a little.

Martin (California)

I can't wait to see how Dunleavy incorporates griffin into his lineup. I see Baron moving to the bench and griffin starting at pg. Then baron can go all stephon on the clippers and boom. We got another highly paid player doing nothing, all thanks to coach dunleavy. Seriously tho, who's gonna be sitting? I see the clips with some good trade bait with those guys. I also see the clips not doing anything with it. Why you might ask? I think you know. Care to take a guess?

Bill Simmons
  (12:26 PM)

Here's how badly the Clippers fan base has quit on Dunleavy. A father-son combo named Lenny and Jesse sit 2 rows behind me. They've been coming since the mid-80's, they are kind of the Bizarro Version of me and my Dad with the Celtics. When the Clips didn't fire Dunleavy after the 19-win season, they decided to give up their tix. That's how disgusted they were. They threw away 25 years of history with the team.

Bill Simmons
  (12:27 PM)

Example No. 2: Clips win the lottery last night, usually you get a slew of calls from people trying to buy season tix or packages, right? Whole sales office is in there celebrating and waiting for the phone to ring. Here's how many calls they got...

Bill Simmons
  (12:27 PM)

Nine.

Bill Simmons
  (12:27 PM)

Nine.

Bill Simmons
  (12:28 PM)

That's how much Clipper fans hate Dunleavy. It didn't even matter to them that the Clips got the No. 1 pick, mainly because they've all been driven away and don't care anymore. The Clips HAVE TO FIRE DUNLEAVY.

Bill Simmons
  (12:29 PM)

did you know that only three other teams in the history of the NBA have kept a coach with a worse winning percentage than Dunleavy for six full seasons?

Bill Simmons
  (12:30 PM)

Philly Warriors (Ed Gottlieb), Cleveland Cavs (Bill Fitch), Wash Bullets (Wes Unseld).

Rock (Camden, NJ)

Um, you do know Tony Parker just turned 27 on May 17, right? And that Duncan and Manu are hurt more often than LaDainian Tomlinson? Why would the Spurs build around the two older/less durable players?

Bill Simmons
  (12:32 PM)

Good question. The answer: They can't deal Duncan for obvious reasons (you don't trade your all-time franchise guy), and Manu wouldn't have as much value as he should because of his ankles. The Spurs were victimized by the NBA's stupid draft system - it penalizes teams that do things the right way and eventually fade back to the middle of the pack because you can't ultimately keep winning 55-60 games picking in the bottom-four of the draft with a luxury tax.

Mark (Denver)

The refs are going to give the series to the Lakers. Typical NBA. Wouldn't Melo v. LeBron be just as exciting?

Bill Simmons
  (12:33 PM)

Don't be so sure about that. I think Denver has a better team - whether they are too dumb to win this series is another story. You cannot underestimate George Karl and the damage he could do in this series, as we witnessed last night when he had his shortest guy inbound the ball with Lamar Odom defending the pass on the biggest possession of the game.

Bill Simmons
  (12:33 PM)

Bill Simmons
  (12:33 PM)

The only Sonics fan I know (my editor KJ) sent me this email after last night's collapse.

Bill Simmons
  (12:34 PM)

"The collapse was right out of the Sonics/Karl time capsule. 1.) Do NOT have a play for sideline out-of-bounds and make an awful turnover that dooms your team. (Tom Friend did a Billups piece for us three weeks ago, and Billups couldn't believe that Denver didn't have out-of-bounds plays for crunch time.) Special props to Billups for loafing to the ball. GP, in his prime, never did it better. 2.) Burn all your timeouts for the final 20 seconds. (This is now officially called pulling a Del Negro.) 3.) Have a player (Martin) stupidly foul Kobe 18 feet from the hole with the score tied (this was always a Kemp or McKey special). 4.) Control and lead the whole game until steps 1, 2 and 3 cause you to lose a game you never should've lost.

Dave ( Chapel Hill, NC)

If you were the Phoenix GM, would you keep J Rich, Nash, and Amare, and try to go back to run-and-gun, or would you try to trade them all one at a time, and rebuild around Shaq, Grant Hill, and Nash going with a 90's style team instead of the run-and-gun?

Bill Simmons
  (12:37 PM)

I don't see why Phoenix has to blow anything up. They won 46 games even though they lost Amare for the last 10 weeks. Why panic? They should be rooting for the Cavs to lose the Finals because the 2010 Cavs would be an ideal dumping ground for Shaq if the Cavs panicked after blowing the 2009 title... deal him for Ben Wallace and Pavlovic's partially guaranteed deal, save a couple million and you're good to go.

Nolan (Palo Alto, CA)

Not very sure about the "Denver has a better team" comment. I think they have a more athletic team, but the Lakers are more skilled. Houston gave the Lakers a tough time mainly because they had more hearts and a speedy Brooks. Denver have neither.

Bill Simmons
  (12:38 PM)

Denver has more talent. Doesn't mean they will win the series, but Melo is every bit the same scorer as Kobe, they defend better, they're tougher and they have a better bench. Don't forget that LA only won last night because they got every call AND because Fisher and Ariza buried 2 humongous threes. They are going to live or die by the Fisher/Ariza threes this postseason because that's the shot teams are giving them.

Anthony (Boston)

How can the Kobe Lebron question still linger. Lebron looks like he's playing a video game with everybody on Easy and he's set to superstar?

Bill Simmons
  (12:40 PM)

To me, there's no debate. LeBron is the best basketball player alive in affects games in every conceivable way. Kobe had a fantastic career but cannot get it done EVERY night anymore and needs a ton of help from refs to get his points. He's a jumpshooter at this stage of his career, and if he's not scoring, he can't really affect games ... LeBron can dominate a game even if he only takes 10 shots.

Michael (Dayville, CT)

Thoughts on the C's resigning Big Baby? It worries me to sign a 6'6 PF that KG made cry on the bench to big money based on 20 good games. He plays no defense and cant rebound (6 rpg in 36 mpg during the playoffs).

Bill Simmons
  (12:43 PM)

With the cap going backwards, I don't see how they can do it. They need to spend that money on a swingman who can shoot threes. They lost that Magic series last summer when Danny messed up by allowing Posey to leave and then trying to replace him with Tony Allen, Billy Walker, JR Giddens and Eddie House. That killed them. The biggest advantage the 2008 Celts had was their ability to go small - in 2009, they couldn't handle anyone who went small and that's how Chicago nearly beat them and Orlando did beat them. They had no answer for the Orlando lineup with Hedo-Shard-Pietrus all playing at once.

Champe (Houston)

Why won't anyone admit that the Lakers are simply not much of a team? Kobe is very, very good, but the rest of their lineup is made up of a bad combination of soft post players (Gasol), bad shooters (Fisher, Walton, Vucijisijcjjch), perennial underachivers (Odom, Bynum, Ariza), and bit part guards with no more upside than they show (Brown and Farmar), all led by the least inspiring superstar in NBA history. It has all the makings of another flameout. Personally I hope the Magic play the Nuggets in the Finals, as just revenge on the NBA for joey Crawford's continued employment and assignment to all must-win Lakers' games.

Bill Simmons
  (12:46 PM)

I have been saying that for 2 months now. What we're watching this spring is basically the 2006 Lakers, only with Gasol replacing Chris Mihm, Kobe being 15% worse, Bynum being 20% better and Ariza being a slight improvement over Ariza. It's a limited team that lacks toughness and can be beaten. I actually think Gasol is the key to their title hopes and not Kobe - he can dominate this Denver series if he wants, and in the next round, he's a brutal matchup for Ilguaskas who just isn't quick enough to keep him away from the rim.

Holmes (New York)

What's your take on KOBE DOIN'WORK? Don't you wish there should have been some Benny Hill music played on the soundtrack at some point?

Bill Simmons
  (12:47 PM)

I only saw the rough cut before they added the Kobe commentary... it was the worst screening I have ever been to. There were 3 kids in my row and all of them were asleep in 20 mins. Supposedly it's better with the commentary but I just thought Kobe played to the cameras the whole time. Every time he talked to a teammate they always had a look on their face like, "Wait, why is he talking to me? He never talks to me."

Murphy (Fargo, ND)

How ridiculous is the whole M. Cuban and K-Mart saga? K-mart couldn?t sound more stupid? Every quote I see from him involves a string of double-negatives. Thoughts?

Bill Simmons
  (12:49 PM)

Agreed. I'd much rather we gave all that attention, plus the attention for the WWE/Nuggets story, to the completely insane Nowitzki/ex-con pregnant fiancee with 8 aliases story which might be the single craziest NBA story since Jayson Williams' chaffeur got shot.

Bill Simmons
  (12:49 PM)

i mean, chauffeur

Bill Simmons
  (12:50 PM)

As one of my Twitter followers wrote me last night, "Blake Griffin lost the lottery and Cristal Taylor won it."

Jack (Los Angeles, CA)

Shocker! Bill Simmons ignores the gutty performance by the Lakers and Kobe, especially in the 4th. The Lakers disproved the theory that they crumble when being punched in the mouth. I get it, you are a die hard Celtics fan and the hatred of the Lakers is a big part of who you are, but what about a little objectivity? If PP had Kobe's exact 4th quarter, I'm pretty sure you would say a thing or two about it. The lakers got every call? Denver shot 11 more free throws, the majority on touch fouls. And billups stepped out of bounds on his late 3 with a ref looking at his feet?

Bill Simmons
  (12:52 PM)

I'm with you! It was a totally gutty performance - Kobe stepped it up the last 2 mins and the Fisher/Ariza threes wqere huge... also, Ariza's steal was just a great basketball play. But the charge on Melo was horrendous. Just horrendous. You can't call a flop at that stage of the game. Also, Kobe got totally bailed out on one of his last 3 drives, can't remember which one... it was embarrassing.

Billy, CA

First off, I'm a Lakers fan but not the typical laker fan who only gets excited if they win games. I've been a fan of a lakers for 17 years now and I just want to tell everybody to quit bitching about the Lakers. look it's the playoffs, every team in the playoffs are "suppose" to be contenders for the championships. Just because the lakers needed 7 games to beat the Rockets doesn't mean they suck, but rather they beat a very good Rockets team. Do you think Lebron would face the same criticism if they played a team that wasn't the Pistons or Hawks, a team that can actually give them a challenge. As Will Arnett says in Arrested Development, "COME ON!!!"

Bill Simmons
  (12:53 PM)

Give me a break. It took them 7 games to beat a Rockets team that had a $25 million payroll for Games 2 through 7. That was a travesty.

Vince PA

Would you say if the Nuggets can't win game one (Melo 14-20, 39 points, but really free throw discrepancy nuggets 35 lakers 24) they have no chance?

Bill Simmons
  (12:54 PM)

They had the FT discrepancy because they played harder and attacked the basket. Nobody on the Lakers was going to the hoop except Kobe, and by the way, Nene fouled out. I have news for you: They're going to be shooting less FT's in every game this series. The Nuggets attack the rim and the Lakers shoot jumpers and threes.

Brent A. (Atlanta)

What did the Rockets series have to do with last night's officiating. It took the Celtics 7 games to beat the 37-45 Hawks last year. You are a joke of an analyst. This is incredible how blind you are to the truth.

Bill Simmons
  (12:55 PM)

brent, if you feel that way - you must hate yourself because I can't imagine why else you'd read this chat. If you remember, I killed the Celtics last spring for their pathetic performance in the hawks series.

Harold (Boston)

The movie si better with the commentary, but lets get back to Spike. As a Celtic fan, could you ever see yourself doing the same thing for a player on an opposite team. What about Baron Davis?

Bill Simmons
  (12:56 PM)

I hope Spike takes heat today for cheering on Kobe like he was Jack Nicholson. First of all Spike, you're a Knicks fan. Second of all Spike, you just did a supposedly "objective" documentary on Kobe and now you're kissing his ass? That was embarrassing. I was embarrassed.

Alex K. (NYC)

So a Webber-led Kings team came up short when it mattered most...again. As a Sac fan, it pains me to no end to write this. PLEASE tell me there's hope.

Bill Simmons
  (12:57 PM)

(Searching for something positive to say)

Rock (Camden, NJ)

Where does Cristal Taylor rank on the all-time list of craziest girlfriends/wives of pro athletes? Or maybe a better question: who's #2?

Bill Simmons
  (12:59 PM)

She has to be No. 1. She's the MJ of this category. She's out of a bad movie. It's unbelievable. I agree with Whitlock - she needs a reality show. I'd like to see the WNBA get her involved with their product somehow... maybe she could be the 12th woman on a team and use a different alias for each game.

Ron (Clarks Summit, PA)

Am I the only one that was absolutely wincing when that Adam Lambert guy was butchering the Sam Cooke classic "A Change is Gonna Come" on American Idol? I felt physical pain listening to a song of such social importance being reduced to glam rock nonsense. All the while, I was absolutely positive the judges were going to fawn all over him. My ears still hurt.

Bill Simmons
  (1:01 PM)

Glad you brought this up. Adam has a great voice, but would you ever buy one of his CD's? He seems like a theater guy to me - someone who should be leading musicals. The judges loved that he took unique interpretations on songs, but sometimes "unique" is a code word for "my ears are bleeding."

Mike ( Bethesda, MD)

So Spike did a commentary on one of the greatest players of this generation and that makes him a sellout? We can't appreciate the talents of other players? You have a mancrush on a player who hasn't done anything on a team that was stolen by an entire city. And you can be so hypocritical as to insult Spike? Come on Bill you are better than that.

Bill Simmons
  (1:02 PM)

A commentary? That was like propaganda.

Michael (San Fran, CA)

As a long time Iverson fan, where do you see his career going? Has he legacy been forever tarnished the way this season has played out?

Bill Simmons
  (1:04 PM)

My prediction is that he signs with the Bobcats and reinvents himself as a complimentary scorer. it's a nice fit for him because of Larry Brown and MJ... the Pistons thing was never going to work, they had already committed to Stuckey and Rip.He makes a ton of sense for Charlotte.

Daniel (Big Lake, MN)

What would you actually do to the Wolves roster if you were the GM? They have that "sweet" sixth pick!

Bill Simmons
  (1:06 PM)

I think this draft stinks. I like Griffin and Rubio, and after that, I like the 8-12 range where you might get Curry, Lawson or Flynn. I know those 5 guys are NBA starters. I don't know about anyone else. If I were the T-Wolves, I'd just draft Curry sixth. I don't have many certainties about the 2009 Draft, but here's one: Curry is going to make threes in the NBA and create shots for other guys.

Jeremy (Boston)

Can you have one of your readers make a youtube video editting the trailer for 'Drag Me To Hell' with Griffin & Dunleavy? Please?

Bill Simmons
  (1:06 PM)

I'd love it. Let's see it.

Marvin (Providence, RI)

What would be the ultimate 'i've seen it all now' blunder from the Clippers with this pick or trade/decision when the time comes?

Bill Simmons
  (1:08 PM)

If they traded down from No. 1 to No. 3 with the Zombie Sonics (to take Rubio) and only got a late first round pick for their troubles. I could totally see them doing something that moronic. Supposedly Dunleavy loves Rubio... and actually, so do I, but you have to take Griffin. He's a sure thing.

Evan (Seattle, WA)

........i feel like the teacher's pet raising their hand with the right answer but the teacher wants to give little Robbie who never talks a chance to answer so she's ignoring my frantically waving hand - LEBRON HASN'T WON YET. How can we possibly call him the best player in the league????

Bill Simmons
  (1:09 PM)

Because he's going to win the 2009 title. Easily.

Hater (CA)

Do you remember your last chat when you were taking dumps on Orlando and Howard? Remember when Orlando led by Howard dismantled your favorite team in the last 2 games of the series? Remember that??!!!!! REMEMBER???!!!!!! Brady, Papi, and KG all done in the same year. Karma is coming back to bite the Bos sports scene in a big way.

Bill Simmons
  (1:10 PM)

Do you remember the part where I kept pointing out how they should have won the series already and screwed up by not playing Pietrus, who was their key in Game 7 other than Hedo?

Jeff (MD)

How many games can you see the Magic winning? I think winning one is a stretch.

Bill Simmons
  (1:11 PM)

I think one. Howard will have one huge game and get everyone in Cleveland in foul trouble... probably game 3. The '09 Cavs are the '91 Bulls reincarnated... everyone keeps underestimating them and nobody realizes that they are about the blow thru these last 2 rounds.

Mike (Portland)

How quickly you forget! Lisa "Lefty Eye" Lopes BURNED DOWN ANDRE RISONS' MANSION! I think she takes the #1 spot without breaking a sweat.

Bill Simmons
  (1:11 PM)

You're right. What's the Mount Rushmore of Crazy Sports Girlfriends or Wives then? Left Eye, Cristal Taylor...

Ash, Vancouver

I hate how people said Kobe beat Melo last night, Melo scored one point less and took 10 shots less and wasn't assisted by the refs like Bryant was.

Bill Simmons
  (1:12 PM)

Melo was the best player on the floor last night. Period.

mike (boston)

Bill, I'm pretty bummed out about the Celtics' prospects in the future. The Big three are aging quickly and they have not cap flexibility to add any good young pieces going forward. I feel like we're looking at another 22 year drought. Help...what would you do if you were Danny Ainge?

Bill Simmons
  (1:14 PM)

They're fine. They were worn down - they played 200-plus games (including 40 playoff games) in the span of 19 months and didn't have KG. Perk and Rondo will be a year better, KG will be back, they have 6 mill of expiring conttracts to deal (Scal + Tony) and they can use some or all of the FA midlevel this summer on a swingman ... I'd love to see them make a run at Ariza. I don't think LA can afford him AND Odom.

Jason (OKC, OK)

I live a few houses down from the Griffin family in OKC. I don't know what to say next time to see Blake's parents on a walk or at the grocery store. Should I go with "Congrats!" or "I'm sorry." Please advise.

Bill Simmons
  (1:14 PM)

I'd go with "Hey... (softening voice) how are you guys doing?"

Carmelo (LA)

I'm a Man. I'm 24.

Colin (Lowell Ma)

Does Carmelo end up having a similar career path as Pierce? Stellar talent, seen as a bit of a trouble maker early then as a malcontent but ultimately matures with the help of a fellow vet or two?

Bill Simmons
  (1:15 PM)

Absolutely. This is why I kept writing last summer that I'd overpay to steal him away from Denver ... he's an elite talent who proved in the past that he can rise to the occasion. The other NBA teams should be kicking themselves.

Matt (Philly)

DOUG CHRISTIE'S WIFE WOULDN'T LET HIM LOOK AT THE CROWD...HAS TO BE ON THE STATUE!

Bill Simmons
  (1:16 PM)

We're up to three: Jackie Christie, Left Eye and Cristal Taylor. Need 1 more.

Tom (Upper Arlington, OH)

What about Tawny Kitaen? She got arrested for beating up Chuck Finley.

Bill Simmons
  (1:16 PM)

Solid choice. Can we do better?

Greg (Phx)

KRIS BENSON'S WIFE- SHE WAS ABSOLUTELY NUTS

Bill Simmons
  (1:16 PM)

Another good candidate

John (Salem)

Who says the best player in the NBA always wins the NBA title? Jordan was the best player in the league in 89, but the Bulls didn't get past the Pistons that year. Basketball, more than any other game, is a team game... if the Nuggets win the title this year does that mean Melo's better than everyone else?

Bill Simmons
  (1:19 PM)

The Cavs have the best team - they can play D, they can shoot 3's, they can post up Z, and they have LeBron. They have an answer for everything. Watch what they do to Orlando. They're going to single-team Howard (which Boston should have done), stay home on the 3-point shooters, swarm high screens and drive the shooters away from the basket ... and Orlando is going to flounder offensively. You watch. Dwight Howard couldn't score 40 points in a game if he was going against Yi Jianlian's chair. That's how you beat Orlando - make Howard score 40 to beat you and shut down their shooters.

Elan, Los Angeles

the Lakers got every call the last 5 minutes? From a celtics fan that's rich. Did the Lakers get the call when Billips CLEARLY stepped out of bounds? That would have been huge if Kobe (unlike paul pierce) wouldn't have made his free throws

Bill Simmons
  (1:19 PM)

The game was over when that happened. Come on.

Pete, NJ

lets not forget Jason Kidd's wife - made him go to NJ so she could launch a modeling/broadcasting career. she ended up w/out the career and w/out the husband.

Bill Simmons
  (1:19 PM)

Another solid candidate.

Steve (Philly)

Craig Hodges' wife Carlita poured gasoline all over him then threw lighted matches at him. That's gotta be up there

Bill Simmons
  (1:20 PM)

I forgot about that one! She's the leader for the fourth spot.

Ernie G. (The Phone Booth)

What can I get with the 5th pick and Jamison?

Bill Simmons
  (1:20 PM)

Amare. And I think you should.

Josh, Hell AKA 29 Palms, CA

Fred Lane's wife...she killed him...theres no topping that.

Bill Simmons
  (1:22 PM)

See, that craziness went too far - I can't put her on there. There has to be at least a little unintentional comedy with the choice and that was just sad and weird.

Dwight Howard (Ohio)

Who is guarding me 1 on 1? Please don't say Ben Wallace who might actually be a mummy at this point. And if you mention the guy with the glass feet or the crazy hair I am coming to find you.

Bill Simmons
  (1:23 PM)

Dwight, you have no moves other than that Sling Hook that is going to break a backboard soon. The FG stats for you when Orlando posts you up are BRUTAL.

Bobby (New York, NY)

On the whole Melo maturing with a good veteran presence: When will the floodgates REALLY open up comparing this Nuggets team with the '04 Pistons? Do they have to get to a game 6? Game 7? The Finals?

Bill Simmons
  (1:23 PM)

I know 2 Pistons fans and have been teasing them about this Nuggets team... how weird is the Billups-Melo foundation thriving in another city?

Jason (Reno, NV)

Blake Griffin is overrated. Why do you think he's a sure thing? He can't shoot, can't dribble, and is undersized. I think he'll be able to rebound and pass, but that's it. He's Varejao or Noah, that's it. Rubio was awesome in the Olympics and I think he's got a chance to be a special player.

Bill Simmons
  (1:26 PM)

Agreed on Rubio. But Griffin is a sure thing from a "He'll definitely give you a 24-12 in his prime" way. His stats in college were just too good. At some point, you have to accept that a guy who can routinely drop 30-15's in college against good competition is going to put up stats in the pros. It's just common sense. Like Kevin Love - the guy did specific things in college (rebounded, shot threes, assists) that eventually made you say, "I know he will do the same at the next level." Conversely, if someone like LaMarcus Aldridge isn't rebounding in college, then he's not going to be rebounding as a pro.

P.J. Columbus, OH

Which draft is going to be worse? This year, or year 2000? Blake Griffin is a much better prospect at #1 then Kenyon Martin was, but after that there's nothing. I don't even see a Mike Miller in this draft. Hansbrough would've gone late 2nd round to undrafted in 2008, not Ford has him in the late first round. That says it all.

Bill Simmons
  (1:27 PM)

2009 is definitely the worst since 2000. No question. There's no way to know which one will be worse... depends on how Rubio and Curry turn out I guess. It's so bad. I Twittered about this last night - when ESPN had that pre-lottery special, I wished that they had me on just so I could have screamed at Jay Bilas, "Stop pretending this draft isn't a giant poop sandwich! Just stop!"

Jed (Redding, CA)

Memphis has got to take Rubio. He and Mayo could be the best defensive backcourt in the NBA in one or two years. Marc Gasol already plays there so that would help the rookie/foreign player transition. It just makes too much sense not to happen.

Bill Simmons
  (1:28 PM)

I agree. They HAVE to take Rubio. Of course, they will definitely take Thabeet.

Stan (Philly)

How do you explain such talent discrepancies in the draft from year to year? This can be seen both in the NBA and NFL. Any ideas?

Bill Simmons
  (1:30 PM)

This year was confusing- I can't explain it. I thought March Madness was exruciatingly awful this season. Just painful. I couldn't stand it. Bad product with uninteresting players. Maybe it's like anything else - totally random and you just never know when it's going to be a good year.

Jordan (AZ)

Should Memphis revisit the Warrick, Conley and Gay for Amare deal... and then take Rubio at #3? I see this deal working for both teams.

Bill Simmons
  (1:30 PM)

It's a no-brainer in my mind but you have to remember, they have no money to play with... they'd rather shed money I think. The bottom line is Memphis should not have a team.

Cory (Champaign, IL)

You've said for some time now that Denver has too many knuckleheads and that at some point they're going to implode. Are you backing away from that position? If not, which Nugget do you think will loose it and which Laker will get the beat down?

Bill Simmons
  (1:32 PM)

We saw it last night. They HAD that game. I am not wavering - they should win this series and they won't because of the knucklehead factor and because of their coach. K-Mart's foul on Kobe with 30 secs left was a classic example of a really dumb play at the worst possible time. They had 3 guys around Kobe and there was no reason to reach in on him. None. Such a bad play.

Austin, Oh

How underrated nationally is Delonte West? We Cavs fans love him and hes absolutley been awesome since he was traded here last Febuary.

Bill Simmons
  (1:33 PM)

You're preaching to the choir. I'm the same guy who wrote before the 2008 deadline that Delonte would be a steal for the right team. He plays hard, makes his threes and teammates love him... and Seattle was giving him away.

Steve (Moscow, ID)

What's the ideal landing spot for Rasheed Wallace and whats the most likely landing spot? Is it so far-fetched he goes to the Spurs?

Bill Simmons
  (1:34 PM)

Doesn't matter. He's washed up as anything other than an 8th or 9th man. The Suns would be fascinating for him though.

Bill Simmons
  (1:34 PM)

Ryan (Pleasantville, NY)

If you're Donnie Walsh, do you re-sign David Lee or Nate Robinson?

Bill Simmons
  (1:35 PM)

No and no. Lee is the move for the Zombie Sonics - they should offer him 6 years $65 million and make NYK have to match. Durant, Lee, Westbrook, Green, Rubio, Krstic, picks, cap space... that's a nice foundation.

Tyler (WY)

Why does George Karl even play Anthony Carter? He's five steps slower than everyone on the court, and the opposing team never guards him. Its making me dumber watching Karl coach this team

Bill Simmons
  (1:36 PM)

I get him as a ninth man... but playing him with 30 secs left on a must-win possession???? So confusing. Even Kleiza makes more sense to me in that spot.

Scott (Milwaukee, WI)

Dunleavy will ruin Griffin's career like Isiah ruined the CBA, wait, I mean Florida International, er, the Knicks. Just be thankful the Clip-joint's pick might actually help. The Bucks are stuck at 10 and will, judging by the depth of this draft, take a future NBA journeyman.

Bill Simmons
  (1:38 PM)

The Clips fans just need to see the big picture: 2 years from now, their foundation will be Gordon, Griffin and Baron, Dunleavy will be gone, and life will be good.

Brad (Chicago)

you mentioned the clips may want to trade Kaman. What about to the Bulls for Hinrich?

Bill Simmons
  (1:39 PM)

In a heartbeat for the Clips. For the Bulls... I don't know. I'd rather see them let Gordon go, keep Hinrich and make a run at Wade or Bosh in summer 2010 if I'm a Bulls fan.

Andy G (New York)

Being a Cavs fan, I'm really scared of the Magic. Mike Brown might be the primary reason for us to lose, plus our frontline is biggest weakness. Also, the Magic have a lot of bodies to throw at Lebron. I think the series will go to 7. Plus it's a terrible match-up for the Cavs.

Bill Simmons
  (1:40 PM)

The Magic just needed 7 games to beat a Celtics team that had 2 scorers with dead legs, Scalabrine/Marbury/House as their bench and actually ran a game-ending play for Glen Davis. Don't start thinking Orlando is good please.

Andy (Albuquerque, NM)

More Homeruns in 2009? Big Papi or ABC's Fall line up (According to JK)?

Bill Simmons
  (1:41 PM)

(Shaking my head sadly)

Ryan (Southboro MA)

Can people stop talking about the Magic. I just watched my depleted and tired team that didn't have a night where its two players each perform well (Pierce and Allen) almost beat them in 6 games.

Bill Simmons
  (1:42 PM)

And probably would have if PP makes those 2 FT's with 3 mins to go in Game 6... that swung the series. Agreed. Let's all settle down on the Magic. They will be lucky to win 1 game.

Dan Gerber (Kalispell, Montana)

Is there a current NBA coach that you have not called an idiot? Other than PJ.

Bill Simmons
  (1:43 PM)

I like plenty of coaches: Sloan, Jackson, Popovich, Carlisle, Jim O'Brien, Scotty Brooks, Scott Skiles...

Mike (The Hot Box)

I was looking at the box score after last nights game and the biggest discrepancy I saw besides offensive rebounding in it was the Lakers bench basically won that game. The Laker starters +/- were -11(divided by 5 is basically two points). The bench was +21 and the Nuggets bench was -14. The difference is (35/5) 7 points. Do you think the bench will continue to be a factor? Cheap points at the beginning of the second quarter add to the scoreboard just the same as any other basket. Also, lakers bench made 10 field goals, 5 of them 3's, nuggets bench made 4 if 15 from the field. This tells me one of two things: either the lakers bench is that much better than the nuggets bench, or it was a fluke at when the the lakers bench falls back to earth the lakers are in trouble to a more talented starting 5 of the nuggets.

Bill Simmons
  (1:44 PM)

I'm leaning towards the latter. LA's bench has been spotty, as has the Ariza/Fish combo, and everyone came through last night, and STILL, they barely won. I think it goes seven and they pull out a gritty win after a typical George Karl collapse like we saw last night.

Warren Coolidge (Carver High, LA, CA)

Yo Bill! What about my crazy ex-girlfriend? She slept with Thorpe and nearly gave me VD!

Bill Simmons
  (1:45 PM)

Sorry Cool - forgot about you!

Michael (New York)

All those coaches are white!

Bill Simmons
  (1:47 PM)

Also like Nate McMillan (despite how he messed up Round One) and I actually think Mike Brown, who was once shaky, has evolved into a really good coach. They are still painful to watch offensively at times but defensively they are superior, and he has to get credit for their chemistry at least a little.

Gopi (Austin,TX)

"Don't start thinking Orlando is good please?" Bill, basketball is all about matchups -- you know that, and Orlando pretty much owned the regular season series but for 1 super close game in Cleveland. The other 2 games were won by about 30 points...not sure any other team in the NBA can say that with respect to Cleveland.

Bill Simmons
  (1:47 PM)

Sure. This is why Cleveland is -800 to win the series. Go to Vegas and bet on the Magic, they are dying to take your money.

Tony V (Mayor of LA)

Stop blaming George Karl for the Nuggets loss. He doesn't shoot free throws. Your problem is that you can't stomach the Lakers winning a series fairly.

Bill Simmons
  (1:49 PM)

Anthony Carter inbounding the ball against Lamar Odom... that was the single worst move of the playoffs so far. Period.

Jeremy (Boston)

Who's your sleeper in this draft that every lottery GM will pass over? Dejuan Blair? He absolutely owned Thabeet this year, coming from a UConn alum, but will be picked 10-15 picks after him. Gotta love the TUP of a soft, foul-prone center with no post moves. Wait, isn't that Andrew Bynum?

Bill Simmons
  (1:49 PM)

I'm with you, I like Blair. But in a normal draft he'd be mid/late 20's. In this draft he might go mid-teens.

Scott Walker

Goal! Goal! Goal!

Bill Simmons
  (1:50 PM)

that hurts

Jake (St. Charles, Mo)

Haven't seen you talk much trash on Nate McMillan, or Eddie Jordan.

Bill Simmons
  (1:51 PM)

I loved that Wash firewd Eddie Jordan, who had been saddled with all-O/no-D players and no bench for years, and replaced him with Flip Saunders, whose basically no different than Eddie Jordan. The NBA is awesome this way. I'd like to see Eddie get a second chance with a better team.

Wes (Charlotte, NC)

Any thoughts on Kimmel's "I'm Keith Hernandez" moment yesterday? Are you worried that you, Draper and The Killers may soon have to find a new place to watch football?

Bill Simmons
  (1:52 PM)

Everyone who was there said his monologue killed with the audience... people were scratching their heads about the NY Times report today. Kimmel always makes fun of ABC at the upfronts.

CB (Louisville)

The steal will be Earl Clark. He wont get picked til 12-20 and is more athletically gifted than just about everyone in the draft. You should have seen this kid two years ago, his improvement has been stunning. Also, mark my words, the ULTIMATE BUST is going to be James Harden. You will be using him as an example for every NBA-related column by 2011.

Bill Simmons
  (1:53 PM)

I'm with you on Harden. If you didn't do it consistently in college, why should I think you'll do it in the pros?

Dan (DC)

So the Wizards should fix the biggest impediment to them being a contender, their horrific defense, by trading for Amare?

Bill Simmons
  (1:53 PM)

Yes. I'd go the other way if I were them - just try to out-score teams like the mid-80's Nuggets. Make every game 128-125. They can't win the title with what they have, why not open it up?

Mike (PDX)

You blame Portland's round 1 loss on McMillan? Why? Does this mean that you couldn't find a way to blame Oden?

Bill Simmons
  (1:55 PM)

He murdered them that series. Killed them. Played right into Houston's hands in every respect. Houston was terrified of Portland going small on them and Portland never did. They went into that series thinking, "Please, keep Oden or Pryzbilla in there at all times, and play Steve Blake as much as possible..."

Matt (Olympia)

Bill, What should the Blazers do to get themselves to the next level? They have something like 5 draft picks...can they package some of those to get a veteran? Who would you want to put with their core of BRoy, Aldridge and Oden(other than Durant)?

Bill Simmons
  (1:57 PM)

I think their talent has been vastly overrated - they have 2 keepers (Roy and LA) and I'm not sold on anyone else on that roster except Rudy. Outlaw, Blake, Pryzbilla, Oden... these are all bench guys. I thought they made a serious mistake not using Raef's contract to get a blue-chipper this year. They look better on paper than they actually are...

David Stern

Bill, can you tell your readers that Kobe and LeBron are both still alive and well in the playoffs. Should make an exciting finals.

Bill Simmons
  (1:57 PM)

I will pass the message along! Should be a great Finals and I'm pumped for it. I have to record a podcast, thanks for all the questions everybody.
