Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Hi there everyone. What's eating at ya today?

QUESTION TO TERRY BLOUNT AT 2.10PM hi terry WHOS YOUR PICK FOR POCONO SUNDAY

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

It's about time for Edwards to break into the win column. I wouldn't be surprised to see Kahne run up front since he looked so good last week with the new motor. But never count out Johnson and Stewart.

Jake

With the crew chief swap for Jr. What is the realistic timetable to see if it is working?

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

It looked like it was working last week we he ran up front part of the race and finished 12th. To me the key is to see if Junior improves during a race, which had been a problem in the past.

Hook (Southern Maryland)

With the talk of Kentucky getting a race and Kansas getting another race, what tracks are up to lose a race and what track do you see losing a race?

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

I don't see Kentucky getting a race or Kansas getting a second race next year. Both things could happen in 2011. SMI will have to move a race to Kentucky, which probably means Atlanta will lose a race. Kansas' second date will come from an ISC track. Martinsville is possible, but many fans will be angry to lose to short track date. Cali better pony up with this Chase race or everyone will scream for it to lose a race.

David Fuller (Marion, NY)

What are the odds that NASCAR will finally let the teams work with tweaking the new car anytime soon?

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

Not likely this year, with one possible exception. If Goodyear can't find an answer on tire wear at Indy, NASCAR might allow a body change to help with more downforce. But I hear the test this week is going well.

derek (dubuque)

we know the favorites, but who's your longshot to win at Pocano?

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

Vickers

Dave (NC)

WoW Terry, can you believe how great Stewart-Haas racing is doing this year? That's why I love Smoke. He's a born winner and excels at anything he does. He's to passionate not to succeed.

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

It shows two things. One, that Tony is an exceptional driver, and two, that he knows how to find quality people to build a team to a championshipo caliber.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Hey Terry, What are the chances that Gibbs or Penske will expand from 3 to 4 car teams for next season????

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

It all depends on sponsorship. If some company wants to pony up $15 million, you do it. If not, you don't

timmy (denver)

do you think the CoT's are hurting the ratings of Nascar? you hear people complain about the cars looking the same.

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

I don't think how they look matters. It's all about the quality ofthe racing. If there's passing up front and side-by-side racing, it doesn't matter if the car is ugly.

Baron (Iowa)

do you see Johnson saving his beard? Who knows what gizmo's Knaus as stuffed in there!

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

It's not quite that thick yet, but drivers are a superstitious lot. Don't change when you're winning.

Ryan WV

Terry, my good man, can anyone catch up to Jeff Gordon wins? Like JJ or Kyle Busch?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

Sure they can. But no one will ever catch Petty at 200. It can't be done anymore.

Greg FL

Do you see fuel mileage come in play at the end at Pocono?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

Could be, but let's hope not. What needs to happen at Pocono is 100 fewer miles of racing.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

What are the chances Mark Martin finally breaks into victory lane at Pocono. He literally has done everything but win at the track.

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

derrick (g'berg)

what did you think of Johnson's charge at the end of Dover? does he get the credit he deserves for a 3-time back to back to back champ?

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

Good point. People need to realize that JJ is one heck of a talented racecar driver. Yes, he has the best crew chief and great equipment, but Jimmie can get after it behind the wheel when he has to make somehting happen.

John CA

If a driver run good this week, will they be a favorite to win at Indy?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

That used to be true, but not now. The winner at Indy wil be the one whose team manages the tires and does a great job on pit road.

Jeremy (NC)

Gut-feeling, fill in the blank: Danica Patrick is driving for ______________ team in ___________ series in 2009

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

Ok, I'll play along. Gibbs in Nationwide.

Robert (Penn)

you hear about Pocono being to long or a boring race, do you think it is or are they changing the amount of laps?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

No change and it's waaaay tooooo looong.

Mike (SC)

If Danica is at Gibbs at any level, how will Kyle handle the level of attention she will get if he has resentment for how much Dale Jr. gets?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

Kyle needs to grow up. His actions last weekend at Dover were childish and ridiculous.

Tod (H.O.)

What if Danica comes to Nascar and wins, how hot does Jr's seat become?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

If DP comes to NASCAR and wins next year she will immediately be declared Queen of the Universe and knower of all things good and evil.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

Hey Terry! Watching some of the pit crews of the bubble and start and park teams, it looks like someone took guys from their weekend lawnmowing duties. Why can't the chase contending teams use the bubble teams as another minor league like the Yankees do with the Royals?

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

That's what the NW Series and the Truck Series is for, are what they should be for.

Ryan (WV)

What grade will you give to Jr. new crew chief?

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

Last week a B+

Matt ( Ogdensburg, New Jersey)

hey terry do you think if danica were to come to nascar she would become the most popular driver

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

She would rank way up there. Only Junior and Gordon are more well known nationally. She would give NASCAR and huge boost when it could use it.

Mark (GA)

Terry, if you and all the other NASCAR reporter have a go cart race. Who will win?

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

Probably Marty Smith unless his wild hair became an aero problem, but I would smoke Ed Hinton and Newt. Actually, Jamie Little would beat all of us. She won the Long Beach celeb race last year.

Dante Chaffer (Big Rapids, MI)

Terry, do YOU think Danica could actually handle a COT? It's not as easy as people think.

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

I think she would have a tough time, but it really doesn't matter. This is about how much money she can make and how much attention she can bring to NASCAR.

Marc (Malden, MA)

4 top 5s in 5 races for Danica. She's certainly running well and the cars are better. If she stays in the IRL, any chance she ends up at Penske or Ganassi?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

Whoever is willing to place a giant stack of cash in front of her will be the winner. But I don't see Penske going down that road.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Are we going to have another one of those seasons, where Penske/Ganassi win every race?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

Not every race, but most of them.

derrick (iowa)

What's your favorite race to watch in the Cup series?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

The Dega races always are exciting. The Bristol night race is fun. I also enjoy the Richmond races.

Miller (FL)

Where is Truex going next year and what about McMurray?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

It appears Truex is going to Waltrip's team. McMurray probably will end up staying in the family and driving for Yates.

Jeff (East Bay, CA)

Is NASCAR just not listening to public opinion when it comes to Pocono? I don't know anybody who doesn't think it's too long! Why aren't they shortening it?

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

Because the track owners make more money in a longer race by selling more concessions. Track promoters don't want shorter races.

Neil (Cleveland, OH)

Hey Terry! I was wondering if NASCAR has thought any about hosting a road course race through the streets of a city. With the IRL ditching the Cleveland Grand Prix, it would be kinda neat to see the stocks on the street.

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

That race wasn't on the street. It was at the old downtown airport and it was some great racing, especially entering that first hairpin turn. But NASCAR isn't going down that road, or runway in this case.

Stu (Madison, Va.)

As I was trying to find a race to go to this summer, I realized there are only four Cup races in the South between Memorial Day and Labor Day (Charlotte, Daytona, Bristol, Atlanta). What gives?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Too hot at most places inthe South in the middle of summer.

Sharpie (Lipton, Venezuela)

Why do you think Jamie is heading to Yates. He's having a much better year than Ragan. Are either the UPS or Crown Royal sponsorships contingent on remaining at Roush?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

You mean there is someone in Venezuela who cares what happens to Jamie McMurray and David Ragan? Nawww.

Bud (CA)

Double file restarts this weekend?

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

NASCAR still hasn't made it official, but let's hope so. It's bound to help the racing there.

mark va

who will drive the 19 will it be available or will rpm drop the 19 and transfer sponsors to #44

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

Too early to say. Right now they are concerned because Dodge stopped giving them money, although they should have seen that coming.

Joel (Nebraska)

is Nascar in real trouble, like with poor ratings and what not?

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

Absolutely not. TV ratings are down for almost every sport because people have so many more choices these days. NASCAR is going away and still receives better ratings than most sports.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

How long before any other Petty drivers get the new Dodge engine package????? I think it will help Kasey a lot.

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

They should have gottne it long ago. RPM was too cautious about making the change.

Jerry (Tampa, FL)

Now, that we're halfway to the cutoff to make the Chase, do you see any changes in the top 12 by the time the Chase starts?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

Very few if any. I have a blog on this that will be up later. In the last two seasons, 11 of the top 12 guys after 13 races were still in the top 12 when the Chase started.

Mike MI

Terry,Chrysler said when they filed that it will not effect the nascar program and $$$ is part of the program its hard to see something coming when they assure you its fine

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

Wrong. Everyone in NASCAR knew Chrysler and GM were in big trouble and should have planned for the worst, regardless of what they said publicly.

Matt (Chicago)

With the potential new restart rule, won't that virtually eliminate any car more than one lap down from getting their laps back (since the lucky dogs will be from the one lap down cars)?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

No, a driver can stay onthe track during a caution and get a lap back.

Sharpie (Lipton, Venezuela)

What happened to the 'Dinger as the season has dragged on?

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

They just don't have enough quality personnel to keep a fourth car in contention.

Don NY

we all know truex will drive the 55 who will drive the 1 maybe sadler

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Maybe, but a lot depends on what Bass Pro Shops does.

Stu (Madison, Va.)

Two words: Night Races!! I was at Martinsville in the "spring" last year and the drizzle was freezing. It was so cold the water wouldn't boil! Throw some lights around the paperclip, run it in July, and people will come!

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

I don't see ISC spending the money to put lights at Martinsville.

Ken (Ohio)

Why can't the Roush team get along on the track?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

I don't think it's all that bad, but they have three very compeitive guys who all want to win.

Don NY

is dodge gone or will they stay

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

Hard to say, but if they stay, the two teams need to understand the funding will be minimal. The only team this will hurt is RPM. Penske can go it alone or switch manufacturers in a heartbeat.

Chad (Las Vegas)

Any word if GM's bancruptcy will effect any of the teams running Chevy?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

Not immediately, but again, every team now knows the days of major backing from manufacturers are over. And honestly, this isn't a huge part of the budget for the major teams

MIke Va

What will keslowski do in 2010

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

I expect him to have a Cup ride somewhere, possibly staying at JR Motorsports if they move up the NW program.

sam

Kahne has looked great the last few weeks will the performance get better or will RPM drop the ball

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

His performance should continue to improve with the new engine, but whether it's good enough for RPM to keep him long term is doubtful.

Jeremy (NC)

Is RCR gonna scrap the 4th team next year or just replace Mears with someone else?

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

The fourth team is staying and Mears probably is also.

Sharpie

Do you see Jr eventually moving over to drive at Jr Motorsports if it's moved up to Cup?

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

I doubt it. His dad never did that and I think Junior will follow the same path of keeping his driving and ownership duties separate.

sam

where could Kahne end up?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

He still has a year left on his contract, but he could try to force them to let him go by signing with another team for 2011. Gibbs maybe?

Pat (PA)

terry, how can two guys from one team go to the same track with the same equipment and one be successful and one struggle? Say like Edwards and kenseth at Pocano? Driving syle?

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

The car set-ups can be completely different based on what the driver wants. And no matter how much they try, no two cars are completely identical even when built by the same guys at the same shop.

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

Gotta run folks to do NASCAR Now. Hope you'll be watching. Have a great day. Peace.
