Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Sitting here trying to decide whether to watch Stripes or the Skins Game from the Memorial while chatting with you. Need some help. What do you think? Of course, my primary focus will be on you guys. Fire away.

Hook (Southern Maryland)

What are the odds we will see Danica in NASCAR next year?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Zero. Nada. She is just using NASCAR to get more money from the IRL. The IRL needs her. She needs the IRL. She would be buried in NASCAR. She would need a year or two in the Nationwide Series or lower and she's not willing to put in that time. She wants the limelight.

Morgan (NC)

Is Robby Gordon open to trying an affiliation deal again with a larger team and more importantly would any larger teams want to be affiliated with him?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

He's been with every manufacturer available the past three to four years, so I'd say he is pretty open to anything. Not sure how long he can survive running as a single-car team, but he makes plenty of money in other forms of racing and has good sponsors, so he's as safe as anybody.

Evan Johnson (SLC, Utah)

Any new word on double file restarts? Lot's of rumors out there that they will be implented at Pocono.

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

They are planning a release later today it appears. Pocono has been tossed around. One team official told me Michigan. Waiting for the official word.

Cleveland, MS

Why would you hire Casey Mears? If you can't get it done at Hendrick IT AINT HAPPENING!!

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Depends on what my other choices were. If it was Mears vs. Carl Long, I'd hire Mears. If it was Mears vs. Jimmie Johnson I'd hire Johnson.

Michael (Morgantown, W.Va.)

David: What is your take on the Bobby Labonte situation. I thought that team would be more competitive. Also, do you think Bobby can still win at this level and do you think he will be with a more competitive team next year.

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

I thought he'd be better as well. Not sure what the problem is, but since Roush Fenway cars have struggled it's no surprised the Yates cars have struggled.

Rob (Bellevue, OH)

What do you think about the craze with JBM making the chase? I don't think he will even be close, and with Truex most likely leaving the #1 car Earnhardt-Ganassi situation is not looking good. Also, with another win by Keselowski, and his desire to drive in the cup series full time in 2010 where do you think he'll be?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

It's JPM by the way. And he's a colorful guy who brings a lot of energy and excitement to the sport. He can hang around Chase contention, but you're right EGR is in trouble. As for Keselowski, I still believe JR Motorsports will go to Cup with him.

Dave(Union Kentucky) [via mobile]

do the TV ratings change when the networks/announcers change?DW, Larry Mac and Hammond are the best.

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

I really haven't paid close attention. I do like Kyle Petty in the booth though. Would rather listen to him than a lot of folks.

Dave (L.A.)

Do you think the race at Pocono is to long?

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

YESSSSSS!!!!!

Stu (Madison, Va.)

If any track could use the double-file restarts it would be Pocono. The first race I ever went to was there... I'm surprised I went to another race after that snooze fest.

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

I would rather see them cut 200 miles out of it than go to double file restarts.

Stu (Madison, Va.)

Stripes... It is a good thing they don't allow "heavily armed recreational vehicles" at NASCAR tracks... talk about a recipe for disaster

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

Good call. It's a classic. Although I can get it on video. Watching Nicklaus and Tiger together is pretty special.

Evan Johnson (SLC, Utah)

Prediction for Jr's finish at Pocono. Top 10?

Evan Johnson (SLC, Utah)

Prediction for Jr's finish at Pocono. Top 10?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Top 20. This may take a while.

Chris (Springfield)

Give us your winner and a dark horse this weekend. Preferably a dark horse not named Vickers since he is everyones.

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Winner, Denny Hamlin. He's great there and overdue. Darkhorse, Sam Hornish Jr. If he can spend a day panning for gold, he can spend what seems like a day driving around Pocono.

RAYGORDON REID HUNINGTONWVA 25717

QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.15 PM HI DAVID WHOS YOUR PICK FOR POCONO SUNDAY

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Just said it. Denny Hamlin. Although I believe Jimmie Johnson is ready to go on a roll.

Jeremy (NC)

David.. I am not surprised you like KP, you both tell it like it is without coming across as bitter malcontents. Any chance he (KP) is in a ride next year?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

As much as I like Kyle Petty, I believe he is best suited behind the microphone than in front of the wheel at this point. I believe most owners think the same thing. How's that for tact.

Evan Johnson (SLC, Utah)

You think Harvick is some what happy that Jr is struggling, I only think this because if not for JR then Harvick would be getting killed by the media for how he's running.

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Pretty much what I say in my column for today. All of RCR would ge under the gun were it not for Junior.

Larry (Gordo, Alabama)

I was disappointed to hear another Chevy driver might jump to the Toyota camp. How serious is the Truex to Waltrip rumor?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Sounds pretty serious. Have heard it's all but a done deal.

Cleveland MS

Why don't they hire a big name crew chief or executive outside the orginization. Stop all the inside shuffling.

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

Not sure what team are you talking about? RCR? Junior? Hendrick has done a pretty good job of shuffling inside for years. Think most organizations prefer to do that first.

Jeremy (Raleigh NC)

Definitely Stripes! Do you think Bootie Barker will be with the MWR #55 next year regardless of who is driving it? If not, will he still have a job in the cup garage?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Stripes 2, Skins 0. Interesting question. I would guess the new driver would have a say in that.

Matt (Chicago)

Speaking of your column today, let one of those ESPN interns know there's no link to it...only the chat!

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

It'll pop up after the chat. Boss is a bit overwhelmed by editing and meetings today. Give him a break.

Glen. Fla

David, Stripes or Skins Game.. go with Stripes thats a no brainer, whats you're take on Carl (My Engine i sbigger than yours) Long

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

Stripes 3-0. You guys definitely are race fans. I actually wrote a blog on Carl that likely won't get posted till tomorrow. I believe NASCAR and the appeals committee did the right thing. They have to think black and white, not haves and havenots.

Evan Johnson (SLC, Utah)

What will it take for Lance Mcgrew to stay on Jr's pit box for next season? Also is Mr. Hendrick searching for a big name crew chief (such as Ray Evernham, I know he's not coming back) for Jr?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

For you guys to leave him alone and let him help Junior without the pressure of being called out every week.. No, Evernham is not a candidate. Neither is Larry McReynolds. As for Mr. Hendrick, he will do whatever it takes.

JJ (portland,or)

i need some clarification- i thought restarts were already double file with the lapped cars on the outside.

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

They are going to double file with lead cars all up front and lapped cars behind.

Matt (Chicago)

Well, while we wait, who have you got for tonight's Prelude?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Mother Nature. The event has been canceled.

Jeff (East Bay, CA)

Newt! Do you have any good stories about friendly rivalries between drivers? Any crazy wagers on who would place higher between teammates or anything like that?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Nothing great. I think they call that betting and betting is kind of frowned upon for the participants. Ask Pete Rose how that works.

Laura, Manhattan NY

When will Red Bull get their stuff together and win a race? They have the talent.

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Vickers might. Scott Speed will not. At least not th is year. Not sure what has happened to Vickers. He looked promising early in the season.

Cleveland, MS

Will KHI go cup racing???

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Not likely. Harvick has enough problems with the car RCR lets him drive. He doesn't want the headache of keeping up with a Cup team.

Evan Johnson (SLC, Utah)

Stripes is good, but like said you can go buy that DVD. The Skins Match man, Tiger the Golden Bear, there just isn't going to be much more from old Jack. Watch him while you can.

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Stripes 3, Skins 1. Tiger just hit a grreat shot. Would be nice to have seen Jack and Tiger together in their prime. A little Watson and Palmer in there would have been nice, too. And of course Johnny Miller. He was great for only a short time, but when he was on he was untouchable.

Stu (Madison, Va.)

Two questions: Are there plans for all of the RPM drivers to get the new engine and what makes Allmendinger more appealing than Sadler?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

There are. Just not sure what race they will go to it.

Z-Monet (LA)

The debris caution thrown during green flag pit stops shuffled most of the top cars a lap down. Why not wait until all green flag stops cycled to clean it up? Who benefited? Dale Jr.

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

I'll be honest, I wasn't at the race and missed that moment. But if debris is on the track they will call it then. If they wait then it could cause problems.

dirk (chicago)

do you like the idea of double file restarts for lead lap cars?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

I do very much. Didn't you watch the All-Star racae? The moves that opened up for Kyle were incredible.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Hey David, Since we are halfway through the "regular season" who would get your vote for most improved driver?? My vote goes to Sam Hornish.

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

I'd go with David Reutimann. Or Marcos Ambrose. Hornish has improved, but not as much as the other two.

derek (iowa)

What did you thik of JJ's charge at the end to win Dover?

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

Incredible, and I listened on the radio while on the way to church to hear my son speak. If it looked half as good as it sounded on MRN it was incredible.

Evan Johnson (SLC, Utah)

Tiger VS. Jack in their prime who ya got?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Tiger. Both are mentally strong, but Tiger is better at getting out of trouble and maybe a slightly better putter. Slightly.

Evan Johnson (SLC, Utah)

I say 80% chance JJ wins his fourth championship in a row. You want the Over or the under on that?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

I'll take over. I'm a believer.

Ronnie (Covington, LA)

Is Kevin Harvick a free agent this year or next? Do you think he will bring up KHI and drive for himself?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

I'm pretty sure he has another year left on his deal. Again, I don't think KHR will be in Cup for a few years.

Kyle (Zanesville, Ohio)

Smoke's gonna win next! I mean, he's due for 1,right? Any comments? After last week, you would have to think hes gonna win at least three this season.

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

He is close. Three seconds is pretty good. I wouldn't pick him this weekend, though. And three might be fair considering he usually comes on in late summer.

Saul (San Diego)

Mr. Newton: With 13 races to go: Top 16 are: Stewart, Gordon, Johnson, Busch, Newman, Busch, Hamlin, Kenesth, Biffle, Burton, Edwards, 12-Martin, 13-Reutimann, Kahn, Montoya, 16-Bower. So what do you think, are we set or do you think there is a dark horse who slides into the chase?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Read my Friday column and you'll get an idea. For the most part I'll say it's set, but there's usually one change. My darkhorse to slip in would be Bowyer, although he's not much of a darkhorse since he was there last year.

Larry (Gordo, Alabama)

I believe Carl Edwards could right his ship at Pocono and pick up that first win. He already has multiple wins at this track. Denny Hamlin also runs good and could get his win.

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

They both probably hope you're right.

sean (az)

Harvick or Kahne should go drive the 12 for penske im not a very big stremme fan.

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Me either.

steve (texas)

if feel bad for Dale Jr. all that pressure!!!!! got to be overbearing you think?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Yeah, not sure how he spends all the money that comes from being the most popular driver on the planet. Tough, tough decisions.

Sean (Mooresville NC)

Is Kyle doing the Triple this weekend? If he thought three races at Dover was taxing, how will he handle three races in three different states?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

Haven't checked on that. He has done it in the past, but it was very taxing. It would give him an excuse to get out of each track in a hurry, though.

Alan Dutton (Dallas, Tx)

I think its time for Nascar to make a change to the race formats to keep more fans.. Maybe shorter sprint periods instead of 500 miles, would save some gas too.. or possibly (dont shoot me) hybrid technologies. Nascar can be in a position to be more of a platform for the auto manufacturers and expedient future developments that ever before. especialyl with the economy situation now.. whats your take? what would the fans "care to watch" ?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Hybrid technology. Then instead of them roaring to the start line they would whine. Not sure we are ready for that. I do think we'll see shorter races at some point. I hope we do.

Matt (Chicago)

Will the new motor put Kahne in the top-10 at Pocono (he's a former winner)? When do the other drivers at RPM get the R06 motor?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Two straight top 10s, one with the older motor and one with the new one, so he's a bit hot. A top 10 is not out of the question.

steve (texas)

i know he makes millions, but not what i meant about feeling for the guy.

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Sorry, was just poking fun. I hear you. He does have a lot of pressure, but better to have pressure and millions than no pressure and nothing.

Marc (Gulfport, MS)

David, is it a fair comparison to view David Ragan's progression to that of Casey Mears. Seems like they are similar in that there was a lot of potential that did not/is not materializing. What say you?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

I'm not sure what's going on with Ragan. Maybe those bad UPS commercials are a distraction. Whatever he's really fallen hard and I am surprised. I thought he would contend for the Chase. And I thought he had more potential than I ever thought Mears did. Nothing against Mears. Just my opinion.

kenny (tenn.)

Does anybody really like Kyle Busch?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

I do, although he thinks I do not.

Craig (ohio)

what's your favorite race to watch in the Cup series?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Richmond or Darlington. I'll go with Darlington. I like the tradition and old school scene of fans around the track before a race.

Woody (Denver)

Oh, and.. Stripes. ARMY TRAINING SIR!

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Stripes 4, Tiger and Jack 1.

Rich, Clearwater

DN, What was the reaction of folks in the room when Jr. went to talk to Kyle? What did Jr. say?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

I actually wasn't there. Just wrote what I was told, so I don't know what was said. Since Junior was not allowed to talk about it we may never know, but I'll be sure to ask this weekend in Pocono.

derrick (iowa)

do you ever see Jimmie Johnson racing the Indy 500?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

He's never talked much about it. Unless they change the start times I'd say the answer is a definite no.

Evan Johnson (SLC, Utah)

I'm not a fan of his but I really feel for Denny Hamlin. Has to have the worst luck ever, it seems whenever he's running well something happens and boom DNF. Keep on truckin Denny

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

It has beena rough year, but he's handled it so much better than he would a year ago.

Luke, Indianpolis

When they implement the double file restarts, what will happen to cars who are on the tail-end of the lead lap? Typically they would start ahead of the leaders on a restart. Will they get a wave-around like in open wheel racing?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Believe the wave around is correct.

Tiger

have to go with Skins... you can always watch Stripes!!

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Stripes 4, Tiger 2. I've settled into Skins. Tigerr and Jack have two skins each.

Jack

sorry gotta go with the skins!!!

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

4-3 Stripes. Closing like Johnson on Stewart.

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

4-3 Stripes. Closing like Johnson on Stewart.

RANDY RITCHIE WHEATFIELD INDIANA

hey david who would you take this weekend out of these groups? 48 or the 99 and then the 11 or the 17 then the 16 or the 18?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

48, 11, 18

Woody (Denver)

What team is in the most disarray? Rousch and RCR for underperforming or RPM for barely even poking their heads up?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

I'd say RCR. They had three cars in the Chase the past two years. Right now one barely is in and to get two will be tough. Expecations put them ahead of the others you named.

Rex (Hopewell, NY)

Can Mark Martin finally win at Pocono this weekend? It seems like he's done everything there but win.

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

He could, but there are others I would choose first.

Sean (Mooresville, NC)

JJ's criticism of double file restart is it doesn't allow racing back up if you're 2+ laps down. Has there been any talk of giving the Lucky Dog to whoever is closest to the leader, no matter if they're 1 or multiple laps down?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

No plans to change the Lucky Dog. If you're two laps down do you really deserve a shot to win?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Raining hard at the Skins game. At least they play on and don't pull out the red flag.

Jeff (East Bay, CA)

C'mon Newt...you know it's gotta be skins! Coming up for the pass!

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

4-4 now. Vroom.

Matt (NH)

What are your thoughts on the recent run by Joey logano and the lack of attention he has recieved?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

JGR put him in that car because they believed he had this potential. And I made a silly wager before the season that he would finish in the top 15. Will be tough, but he's showing what he's made of. He'll be a star one day.

Chris M. (tenn)

have to go with Skins... come on Tiger and Jack... you can always watch Stripes on Tivo or VCR or TBS..

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

Skins 5, Stripes 4. That's a fact, Jack!

Digger

Are you going to miss me?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

NOOOOOO!!!!!!

Patterson. Augusta, Ga.

Why would Truex go to MWR instead of SHR w/ Bass Pro Shop???

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

Well, NAPA is a pretty good sponsor that wants to run every race. Bass Pro Shops I hear would like to cut back to 16. And he has a chance to be the star at MWR. He will be third man at SHR. My guess if he leaves EGR is Bass Pro Shop will split with Army and Newman next year.

Eddie (new albany, IN)

newt, who do you think will stay at Roush Fenway Racing?? Jamie Mac or David Ragan? jamie mac certainly has more talent but Ragan just landed a long term sponsorship deal...tough choice...

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

Ragan. The numbers add up.

norm, palm springs ca

Skins 5, Stripes 4, Digger -10

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Good one.

Greg - Indiana

David, Why doesn't Jeff reconize Indiana as his home state like Tony, Ryan and David do? I believe he is from Pittsboro, IN. correct?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

He was born in California and was there till early teens I believe. Then he moved to Pittsboro to follow his racing dream. I went there last season. Go back and read and you'll get an idea of what it is like.

Fred (Dover)

I'm guessing you don't have the Digger t-shirt.

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

No, but I am getting a Billy Bad Butt one.

digger

my vote.. the skins game

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Skins 6-4, although a digger vote should count only half.

Rich, Clearwater

DN, Wouldn't it be easier for Brad K. to go to SHR? SHR and Jr. could own the team together, no?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

No, I don't think Haas is giving the other 50 percent to Junior.

Jammer Ogden, Utah

With JG having back problems, do you possibly seeing him retiring next season of do a part time schedule to help his back. And if so, could that be Keselowski's big break to take over the 24?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

If this gets worse it's always a posiblity. I look for him to try to go three or four more years at the most.

Joe (vegas)

have to watch the Skins...

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

7-4 Skins. But I really love that scene in the kitchen.

Rudy

what was up with Billy Bad But... come on Smoke your better than that...

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

It was cool to see BBB stand up for his driver. We need more of that. Wonder if Eury Jr. would have done that for Junior? Of course he would.

Bengal Irons (Golf Course)

Skins all the way!!!!!!!!!!!

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

8-4 Skins. This one is almost over.

norm, palm springs ca

Gorden is falling lately. Is the back as issue?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

As I've said in Friday aritcle, Hendrick should put all the support toward somebody that still has a chance to win the title.

sean (az)

ESPN doesnt have a dumb cartoon character in the works for when they take over do they?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

You mean the characters we currently show aren't good enough for you? Oops. Tiger just missed a short putt.

Ashley (Nevada)

does Johnson get the credit he deserves.. i mean 3 back to back championships!! he his great for nascar, does the right things on and off the track, except for that beard!

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

I've given him all the love I can. If he's unappreciated it's because the fans don't give it to him. A shame.

Brian (Dallas, TX)

Sam Hornish finish the season in the top 20?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

I doubt it. But he could be close.

ryan -- chicago

what's the real story on mayfield? who's guilty and who's not telling the truth?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Both sides put on a good argument, and it's not my place to say who is telling the truth or not. I'm supposed to be impartial, you know. I have enough to handle beween the dog and cat at home than to figure out this mess.

robert (iowa)

why didnt Hendrick just keep Kyle Busch when he brought in Jr. and give the boot to Mears... he did anyways!

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Because he felt Mears fit into the HMS system more than Busch. Had Busch not sought alternative employment he probably would still be there.

Patrick Texas

How many races you think jeff gordon will win

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Three

Tom (Danbury,CT)

One thing that people don't realize about Johnson is that he is very close to having 5 titles in a row at this time.

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

You are right on with that. He could be clsoe to being the greatest ever.

jake (orlando)

Is truex looking like he's going to MWR because he doesn't have any other offers like SHR? or does he just want to go there over other places

David Newton
  (3:02 PM)

His little brother is at MWR, so that helps. Plus the organization is running well and NAPA is a great sponsor. Lots of positives there. And SHR isn't ready to commit to three teams.

Felipe (Dallas)

When Truex leaves EGR, who might be a possible team mate for him?? Do you think Montoya will split EGR any time soon and when is Nascar going to shorten these races. I can not watch a whole Nascar race no matter how hard I try. Sometimes just rather see where JPM finished and read post race news.

David Newton
  (3:03 PM)

That's a lot to digest in one breath, and unfortunately my time is up. I'll say this, the races will one day be shortened and EGR with just Montoya can't survive. Until next week....and Skins win.
