Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hey everyone, let's get rolling.

Caleb (Salida, CO)

I know he's no longer in the AFC West, but what do you think of Tony Dungy's comments on Jay Cutler?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

It was interesting. I think Cutler's bigest public issue is his maturity, wich Dungy indicated. But he is 26 and he has plenty of time. The bototm line is, he is immensely talented and he has a chance to be great.

Victor (Covina, Ca)

Hey Bill, just wanted u to know that u forgot to mention that DHB hadn't practiced since the minicamp because NFL rules don't allow rookies to participate if their school is still in session....U made it sound like he was out this whole time because of the minor hamstring pull.

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

Well, Victor, if he wasn't practicing Wednesday because of a May 10 injury he wouldn't have been practicing last week. The truth is he hasn't practiced since the injury.

Dave( Chattanooga,Tn)

The raiders have a lot of good tailbacks. Who do you see as the main ball carrier in 09?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

It'll be a three-man job, but i think the team wants McFadden to be the top guy.

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

It'll be a three-man job, but i think the team wants McFadden to be the top guy.

Gary (Brazil)

Denver obviously could use a great NT. What are the chances of a trade with Baltimore, NY, or Cleveland - 3-4 teams with a surplus of NT. Each of those teams could use a TE (Sheffler).

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

I haven't heard much about that. I think the Broncos are warming to the idea of keeping Scheffler.

Victor (Covina, Ca)

Mike Mitchell hasn't practiced either since May 10. He too was out with fatigue that day, yet he hasn't returned because of the "school rule". Are u going to say he has been out because of fatigue?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

Why are you trying to fight, bro? Heyward-Bey is out with a hammy. It's June. No big deal. Move on to some important stuff.

Jay, Denver, CO

Any update on Brian Waters and the Chiefs? What is your opinion of their O-L? Thanks!

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

The mandatory camp starts Friday. It'll be interesting to see if Waters is there. I don't think he's going to show up. As for, the rest of the Kansas City O-line, well, I think it is better with Waters.

Mark: Lawrence, KS

Do you think that McDaniels will facter in all the talent Mike saw in RB Ryan Torain or has he all ready made up his mind by drafting Moreno. I think it would be better if they keep Torain instead of Jordan, because of age and upside if healthy.

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

If Torain has a great issue, he may stay. Health is his biggest issue.

Nick (SLC,UT)

Do you expect to see improvement from Eric Weddle? Seems like he has has the skills, just hasn't put them all together yet.

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

I thought Weddle made a lot of big plays last season. He was always around the ball.

Robby (Pensacola, FL)

Hey Bill. Love the blog. Couple of Chiefs' questions: Any news on the Mike Brown visit? I know he was supposed to be in town, but haven't heard any updates. And have you heard anything about Marvin Harrison? There were rumors that his agent and Team Pioli were working on a one year deal. Thanks in advance.

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

I checked in the Brown deal today. Nothing mcuh to report. Haven't heard much on Harrison, but I think it would be a nice fit for the Cheifs. If they want all of these older guys on defense, why not on offense?

gabriel (san diego, Ca.)

Hey Bill so i gotta say i didn't really agree with your rating on running backs. you say the raiders trio of running backs is at the top ofthe league yet you rank them all last within the afc west? what is your reasoning?

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

Thanks for the question, Gabriel. First, we all have opinions and I respect those who don't always agree with mine. I know going into the rankings, not everyone is going to be thrilled with me. As for the Raiders' running backs, I say they are at the top of the division as a group. Individually, there all have limitations, but it is a nice group. Having all three of your tailbacks ranking in the top seven of a division is pretty good.

Oral Roberts, Modesto, CA

BW - I don't get your fascination with rookies who have never played a single down or taken a single hit in the NFL. You keep ranking players - running backs and now wide receivers, and you continue to place 22 year-old rookies ahead of established players who have collected a legitimate paycheck for playing in the league. You must be on one of those twinkie sugar highs that everybody keeps mentioning in your blog comments...

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

See, folks, I even answer the rude ones ... Here's why I rank rookies: BECAUSE THEY ARE NOW IN THE LEAGUE. If someone is drafted No. 12 overall, I'd say he has some value. Now, if a rookie falters, I'll knock him down next year.

Will (San Diego, CA)

If the Chargers don't get to the Super Bowl or at least go far in the playoffs, is Norv Turner done in SD?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

No, I don't think so. The Chargers brass really likes Turner. If he wins the division, he should be fine.

Nate Reno, NV

Bill huge fan thanks for all the updates. I was wondering if you have heard anything new on Demetrious Byrd? When we could expect him at Chargers park?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

Thanks, Nate ... I've been trying to get that question answered. Byrd's people have been very quiet. But I think he will be fine.

Larry (Pasco, WA)

Hey Bill, love the blog. A lot has been made of Culter's maturity, but lost in the AFC West is the growth and increase in maturity of P. Rivers. Do you think Cutler leaving the division will help or hurt the perception of P. Rivers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

I don't think it will affect Rivers at all. The only difference is he won't have to answer Cutler questions for two weeks a season.

Victor (Covina, Ca)

Bill, i do have to commend u for the recent rankings on the wr of the afc west...To my surprise you ranked DHB at 6. althought, right not I personally think Chaz should be ranked higher than him....

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Well, thank you, kind sir.

Trayvon Tanner (Detroit, Mi)

if Stafford starts the season how many wins do you predict for thelions 2009-2010 season

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

Stepping out of the division for a moment .. 4-6.

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

Stepping out of the division for a moment .. 4-6.

Dave, NC

With all the RB pickups and drafting of Moreno, who emerges as the guy in Denver? They obviously drafted Moreno for a purpose, to be the guy, but I'm not sure he can do that as a rookie.

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Running back has proven to be the easiest position for rookies to adjust to. The Broncos want Moreno to be a three-down back.

Mike (Dallas TX)

Bill, given the rude entries you have received today, if I was you I would have your agent notify ESPN via the media that you either want more money, or to be traded to another blog. I could see you fitting in nicely up in the NFC North blog.

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Thanks, Mike, but I like it here just fine. We're having good times.

Rachel (KC)

I once read Todd Haley say that he was taught by Bill Parcells to play to the strengths of your players. And while he was not the biggest fan of a passing game like he ran in Arizona, it was their biggest strength, so he had to crete an offense to highlight that. That said, what do you expect from his offense in Kansas City? What do you see as their biggest strengths?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Nice question, Rachel. I think the strength is Cassel and Bowe and Johnson. I think the Chiefs will be aggressive and try to power their way to wins. It will be a work in progress, though.

Mike (Hollywood, CA)

What are the chances Kassim osgood actually gets a decent chance to play as a wr or a safety? The Chargers have a lot of depth at wr so is Safety his only spot?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

The San Diego Union Tribune reported he looked good at receiver this week. If he has a great camp, maybe he'll play some receiver, but so far the Chargers have been hesitant to use him on offense.

Trayvon Tanner

Rookie of the year predicitions please

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

Subject to change Offense: Mark Sanchez. Defense: Aaron Curry.

Buck, Dodgertown, CA

Any new rumors about AFC West teams (especially SD or Oakland) relocating to LA within the next couple of years? I suspect these owners are trying to see how much milking of the NFL they can achieve?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

Until either one of those teams get a new stadium deal, I think L.A. will always hover. But nothing much new.

Ray, El Paso TX

Hey Bill do you see any 2nd day draft picks or UDFA's making a big impact this year in the AFC West?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

The San Dieog guard, Vasquez, who was taken on the second day, could start if he has a good camp. Let's keep an eye on this subject as training camp moves closer.

Larry (Pasco, WA)

Bill, the Chargers have started off rough the past two seasons and rebounded. This year they open up with @OAK, MIA, BALT, @PITT, & DEN. That seems pretty tough to me. Do you see the Chargers getting off to a rough start for the third year in a row?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

It is fairly tough. It getts easier later. But the Chargers really need to find a way to start fast, so they can stay consistent and not scramble at the end of the season.

Victor (Covina, Ca)

Bill, now that u have DHb and Chaz Shillens in your top 8 wr. Do u see the Raiders going away from broke leg Walker and have Higgins as the 3rd wideout?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

I don't Walker can be counted on. Higgins has to be ready.

PT (Franklin, NC)

Reports are saying that Jamarcus Russell actually had a pretty good practice, do you think the panic of his early struggles was a little premature?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

Yes, it was reported he looked decent Wednesday. Yes, it is all premature. Camp doesn't start for nearly two months. But what else are we all going to discuss in early June? The bottom line is Russell has plenty of improving to do, but he also has plenty of time to improve.

PT (Franklin, NC)

Would you be suprised if Zach Miller made the Pro Bowl this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

I'm a Miller guy. With Gonzalez in the NFC, there is an opening.

Brian Phoenix AZ

Why wouldn't the Chargers go after Plexico so they can have that true number one they have been lacking for a long time

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

They really like Vincent Jackson and I don't think the Chargers want to mess with a troubled player at this point.

Xander (Philly)

If Jamarcus Russell doesn't start producing this year, do they consider trading him?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

Or cutting him.

Kevin (San Diego, CA)

Hi Bill, what do you think the chances are the Chargers lock up Rivers before the season starts? As well as the oulook on extending Gates?

scott ( huntington beach, CA )

Hey Bill. Great work as always dealing with those Raiders fans. j/k Anyways which game in the AFC West are you lookng forward to attending to most this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

The truth is, the Raiders fans are no worse than anyone. Fans of all teams are passionate. It's cool. The first game I'm looking forward to his the Denver-Chicago preseason game. That is going to be the wildest preseason game in the history of the league. Then, I'm fired up for the Monday nighter in Oakland when San Diego visits to start the season. Then, we'll go from there.

James(Hampton Roads, VA)

Bill, just read your WR ranking for the AFC West. One question for you. What were your main reasons for V.Jax over D.Bowe. V.Jax has always had a great ypc average but how much of that is/was 8 in the box and safety help on Gates. If you put V.Jax on KC would he be the #1 guy or would Bowe?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Real good question. I really like Bowe. I think he can be an elite guy. I like Jackson because he has Rivers and he always comes up big when it counts.

derrick denver colo

were do think robert ayers will play line or linebacker

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

I don't the Broncos even now that answer. I think he'll play some of both.

Justin (sANTA fE, NM)

What are the chances the Chargers bring in a veteran RT like Jon Runyan?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

I don't think the Chargers are going to go that way.

Victor (Covina, Ca)

Bill, how can u consider trading or cutting Jruss in only his 3rd yr(2nd as a full time starter)? Especially since his numbers are very similar to John Elway's numbers after his 2nd season. Now, don't get me wrong i am not saying he will be the next Elway.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

The quesiton was "if" he doens't produce. If a quarterback doesn't produce after his first three seasons in the league, teams historically consider other options. No Raider bashing there, friend. Same goes for everyone.

Bill Williamson
  (3:02 PM)

Great hour everyone, enjoy the weekend. Talk to you next week.
