Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings, Fight Freaks to our weekly chat. Slowwwww weekend in boxing but huge fight next week with Cotto-Clottey and plenty of things to discuss. Please check out today's notebook, this week's blogs and the updated rankings and schedule. Let's get right to it.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

How close is the Shane-Manny fight to being a done deal?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Let's nip this right in the bud -- it's total BS. There is nothing to it for real at this point. Manny made an off-handed comment that, sure, he'd fight Shane if they could work out the right deal, the same response he would make about any top fighter. Shane's publcists went wild with it. But there is no deal, there is no fight. Manny is coming to NYC next week for the Cotto fight and the awards dinner and will talk to his promoter. Pacquiao won't make any decisions until AT LEAST until after next week's fights and more likely until after Mayweather-Marquez. So, again, there is no Pacquiao-Mosley deal. There aren't even real discussions going on.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

And, may I add, that when that story ran on ESPNews the other day it shouldn't have. They jumped the gun without checking out the facts or checking with me.

Kyle (Indianapolis)

Why are so many fighters pulling out of ESPN fights?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Some are valid because of injuries. But it is also easier to pull out of an ESPN fight that may pay you very little money than it is to pull out of a much bigger fight. The level of money often is directly related to how often a guy pulls out.

tom (Hackensack)

does cintron stay put? or back to welterweights....

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

He'll go where he can get the biggest fight but I suspect that will be at 154, so I don't expect him to be back at welter.

Keiran (Syr)

The poll on the boxing homepage is who does Andre Berto have the best chance of beating?I voted for Cotto, do you agree?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I didn't vote because they didn't offer a choice of none of the above.

Tom, Sacramento

Thanks for the notebook today. Don't you think Malignaggi is a little risky for Juan Diaz? Especially with Diaz moving up.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

If Juan Diaz wants to be on HBO there has to be some element of risk. It's a good fight and winnable fight for both guys. If I am Juan's matchmaker I like the fight because my guy is coming off a KO loss and at least Paulie isn't a puncher at all.

Greg(Los Angeles)

What is the latest with Wlad-Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Still up in the air. Haye wants a three-week delay to July 11 and Klitschko would like to fight June 20, so they are talking about the options. Do they wait for Haye? Do they try to sign a new opponent? If so, who? Will HBO still take a replacement? Without Haye, Setanta's money is gone, so do they wait? There are a lot of things being discussed as we speak. For all I know the Bat Email or phone could contain the answers during this chat.

Bing(Philly)

Nice, suprising win for Cintron but he was fading badly the second half of the fight. And down right running at the end. I don't agree when people say he showed heart

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Cintron was dead tired at the end of the fight and to me that was a classic, classic example of why I wish there were still 15-round fights.

steve reno

Any venue/date information for dawson johnson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Nothing yet other than the fight will be in September or November. I would suspect November.

Brian (Michigan)

Wait for Haye and destroy him. Don't sub in some bum when you won't get any credit or money for it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Well if they sub it may be Ruslan Chagaev, who has certainly more of a heavyweight resume than Haye.

Kelby (Omaha)

Whats your thoughts on the Wlad-Adamek notion if it would have happened?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

It was just one of many thoughts. They called just to see if Adamek was even interested, no offer or anything. Had Adamek actually gotten the fight I think Wlad knocks him stiff.

Alec (Nashville)

All right, Dan, the time has come. Cotto/Clottey...who you got?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

No, the time has not yet come. That time will be next week's chat when I am in New York for the fight.

Louis (Montreal)

Ruslan Chagaev? Doesn't he have hepatitis B?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Yes, but according to some tests it's at a low enough level where he can be licensed. In other places, they won't license him.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Dan, Any news on Showtime's schedule through the end of summer into the fall?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Showtime's schedule stinks right now. The only boxing on the schedule at the moment is July 11 with Agbeko-Darchinyan. There is nothing else official, be it ShoBox or Champ Boxing. In August, they will likely have Bradley vs. Campbell.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, how seriously was/is Klitschko looking at Valuev as a possible replacement?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I'm sure they inquired but I don't think Valuev will do it. Like he did when offered a replacement for Chagaev, he will complain that he trained for a southpaw, not a righty as big as Wlad.

Walter (LA, CA)

Do you think Mosley could REALLY drop down to 142 to fight Pacquiao? The more weight he has to lose, the bigger advantage Pacquiao will have because Mosley will be sapped before he makes it to the ring. (See: de la Hoya, Oscar)

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

No way will Mosley go down all the way to 142. That would be a huge detriment for him and I doubt he could physically even do it.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

I thought Guzman was out and Campbell was in for Bradley's August fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

My bad. I meant Campbell, not Guzman.

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - Would Izzy Vazquez take a tune up fight before jumping back in the ring with the likes of Marquez even though he says he wants to fight this fall?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

No. I believe his next fight would be Marquez or some other notable fight. I don't think he'll take a tune-up.

sam

is their anyone you'd rather have Wlad fight besides Haye? The opponents they've been talking about, Chagaev and Valuev, seem as good as one could hope for.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I'd like to see the Haye fight but Chagaev and Valuev would certainly be reasonable replacements in a terrible heavyweight division.

Scott (Los Angeles, CA)

Why should Cintron-Angulo have been a 15 round fight if it wasn't for a world title?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

It was an official elimination fight.

Jon (DC)

How is K9 Bundridge in an eliminator? Beyond absurd.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Because the sanctioning organizations are ridiculous.

Andrew (Toronto)

What is the nature of Haye's injury? I heard hand at 1st, then his back.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

There was confusion at first with them saying hand and then back. It's his back supposedly.

Kyle (Indianapolis)

Do you think Wlad wants to replace Haye just cause of all the smack he was talking, and make him wait it out 3-4 more months?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

It would be a lot more than 3-4 months. If Haye doesn't get the fight now, he's not getting it for awhile. Wlad will have mandatory obligations.

Chris (Concord, CA)

Say Marquez somehow beats Mayweather. If that happens, do you think Pacquiao would do a third fight with Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I think it would become a distinct possibility.

Josh (Danbury)

how come your pound for pound ratings haven't been unpdated since April 17?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

They were updated in May as they always are each month.

Dibs NYC

How much more $$$ is Malignaggi getting with the Diaz fight ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

The deal isn't done. And why do you care anyway?

Back spasms

David Haye? We've never been properly introduced.

Allen (Riverside, CA)

Dan, I ran into Arreola at a bar last weekend. Let's just say that the personal trainer and his new dedication is a bunch of BS. The guy was pushing 3 bills.

ruben brooklyn ny

what's next for junma lopez and do you think he's the real deal

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

You don't read the schedule apparently, I'll tell you but bookmark the sked -- he fights on PPV Junw 27 vs. Olivier Lontchi.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

If Haye gets pushed back does Povetkin move ahead of him as well?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Povetkin is the next mandatory and supposed to fight Wlad late this year.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Studying for the LSAT and I have a non-LSAT question for you D$$$$.... How could ESPN NOT!!! check with there boxing analyst BEFORE running a story about a BOXING match?????? That's like running a story about Duke vs UNC without talking to Dicky V!

Dennis (Little Ferry, NJ)

Dan, since you have the influence :) Can you convince HBO to include Calderon in the televised card next week of the Cotto-Clottey fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

As I have said here for weeks, ain't happening. Forget about it. No chance. I know when to pick my battles and this isn't one of them.

Mark (Windsor, CT)

Shane Mosley's title will still be on the line if he faces Pacquiao at the catch weight right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Big if but if they fought and it wasnt over 147, yes, his title would be up.

Sugar Shane

Manny, you can have the larger share of a 60-40 purse split. Let's make money together!

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

By the way, when Shane's people put out a release saying Shane would accept 40% and give Manny 60% it was the dumbest thing I ever saw. Why would you make your OPENING offer 40%. All that means is that if they really negotiate the fight he'll wind up with less.

David (Winston-Salem, NC)

Any chance of seeing Pavlik-Abraham this year? Or have to wait until 2010?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Almost zero chance of it happening this year.

Ryan (Cleveland)

What is up with all the pound-for-pound questions lately? It seems like every week you are getting yelled at for not doing them anymore...except you are. Furthermore, fewer and fewer people are giving you nicknames like Robinson Dano, or The Green Dan-tern...what is happening?

Joe (Stamford, CT)

Gamboa on the JCC jr. undercard; Any closer to getting done?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Top Rank and Gamboa's people are supposed to meet in NYC next week and hopefully finalize the deal they've been working on.

JM

You're not interested in a Kermit-Sergio rematch? I think that's a really interesting fight now, esp. in light of Kermit's victory over Angulo.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Not interested at all. To me, Martinez already beat Cintron twice and easily. And it's not like the fight was that good anyway.

Rick (Paterson)

DTM - Regarding your 60/40 comment, are you saying that Sugar Shane Mosley is a possible candidate for admittance to the Winky Wright School of Boxing Business????

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Let's just say we are reviewing his application, or at least the application from his publicists who sent that nonsense out.

Jesus (Puerto Rico)

When are they going to have JCC jr fight any real competition?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

When will a Unicorn land on my front lawn and hand me the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?

Winky Wright

My School of Finance just keeps growing and growing

Joe (Gainesville, FL)

Danastota, are Phillip and Lovemore related? That's a strange bout that many have probably considered in the back of their minds.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

No, the Ndous are not related.

John (San Fran)

Dan, what happened to the "Filipino Fury" card that was being put on at the SF Giants stadium? That combined with Andre Ward could be a surge in boxing popularity in the Bay Area.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

The card is still on (Aug. 15 now instead of Aug. 22) but will be in Vegas.

Gerardo, Chicago, IL

Dan. Any new word on who Edwin Valero's next opponent will be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Nothing definite at all, but there has been some conversation about a match with Joel Casamayor in September.

Alec (Nashville)

Is Arthur Abraham going to wait around at 160 forever to fight Pavlik? Do you see him moving up anytime soon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I think both Pavlik and Abraham are suffering dearly to keep making 160 and both will move up before too long. You can be assured that if they ever do fight at 160 it will be the last fight at that weight for both of them.

ESPN First Take

Dan, you mentioned George Foreman's son is making his professional debut. Is he also related to Yuri Foreman, another fighter mentioned in your notebook? A brother vs. brother matchup would do a lot of business!

william(plano,tx)

Dan,do you agree Pacquiao-Mayweather is by far the biggest fight in boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Yes, I agree.

Manny, CT

Any idea which undercard fights will be aired on showtime for Agbeko-Darchinyan? Theres some good fights on there that are competing for airtime.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

The main event and a fight with Antonio DeMarco.

Dan (Syracuse)

Greetings from Upstate New York. Any chance of seeing you at any of the IBHOF weekend ceremonies? Lennox Lewis should make for a good turnout of some great heavyweight stars.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Unfortunately, I won't be there. I'd love to go but I will be in NYC for the Cotto-Clottey fight that weekend. I used to go all the time until I started covering boxing and the HOF is always on the same weekend as a major fight. I wish the HOF would move its weekend one week up or back.

Vhob (Missouri City, Tx)

Do you think Pacquiao-Mayweather will happen? Who will win in your opinion?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I do believe it will eventually happen because the amount of money for both sides is staggering and nothing else comes close. It won't be easy to get there and it will be ugly at times I am sure, but if the fight doesn't happen a pox on both sides for denying the public a fight it REALLY wants.

Craig( Pittsburgh, PA)

Dano.. can you blame a freak for refusing to pay 600 bucks to sit in the upper sections to watch the Mayweather - Marquez fight? I mean come on!! do you agree they are way over priced?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Yes, the ticket prices for that fight are absurd.

Jim Texas

Who else is on the mayweather undercard besides juddah-hatton

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Looks like Carita Lopez defending his belt. The rest is still in the works.

MSmith (Taunton Mass.)

Dan, if Pacquiao waits for Floyd do you think Mosley waits too or is there a fight he'll take in the meantime?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Shane may not have a choice but to either sit or take a fight with someone not named Pacquiao, Mayweather or Cotto. If COULD go for Paul Williams at 154 (or make him get down to 147) or Berto.

Daniel (NYC)

Dano, any suggestions on how i could find a cotto or clottey open workout in NY before the fight next week (which i will be attending)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Cotto is doing a public workout tomorrow (June 6) at 2:30 pm in an outdoor ring at 152nd and Wales Streets in New York. It is upen to the public.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

How's that for service?

Joe (Gainesville, FL)

Why is Sweet Pea wasting his time with the Pittsburgh Kid? I know they have similarities, but Spadafora is a proven headcase even in Whitaker standards.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

No idea. Seems like an odd pairing to me.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan the Man, after the loss last weekeend for Angulo, where does he go? He looked like he was out of his league for most of the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Angulo will be back I am sure. HBO will put him on again. He didn't disgrace at all. He fought hard, was coming on huge late in the fight. Obviously, it turned out Cintron was a bit too experienced for him and Cintron did a good job. But Angulo is still a fighter I want to see and so do many others. To be honest, I am still more interested in seeing Angulo fight than I am in seeing Cintron's next bout.

Rick, Marina, Ca

Do you think the fight with Baby Bull vs Malignaggi gets done? That would be an interesting fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I see no reason why it won't get done.

Paul B (NY, NY)

I know his question is asked every week but...any new update on Kirkland? What a huge loss for the fans.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

There is no update so you can stop asking. He is in jail awaiting his trial. When there is news, rest assured it will be posted.

Greg(Los Angeles)

Whats the deal with the eliminator between between Dirrell and Ward? Do you see that fight happening in the near future?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

It's a fight that has been ordered but there's no way it will happen. It may happen in the future but not now as an eliminator for relatively small money.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

Is Arum really considering Valero for Pacquiao in November?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Arum likes to say all kinds of things. He's mentioned Valero. But we all know that isn't happening with the amount of money on the line for other fights. Valero is by far the smallest of possible fights for Pacman. Therefore, it won't happen.

John Ruiz

I love the WBA!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

You're banned.

Kevin (Fall River)

Any chance to read Nigel Collins' article for the Ringonline on the inaccuracies of Kimball and Borges in previous stories about their ranking systems and bias in favor of Golden Boy? Just wondering your thoughts, I think Collins did a great job pointing out how they were mistaken.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I did read it and I agree with what Nigel wrote. I didn't read the Borges article but I had read the Kimball article and it was horrible, filled with nonsense and wrong facts. I've known George a long time and I emailed him to tell him about the mistakes. It obviously did no good. So many basic errors it was stunning. Just a pure hatchet job.

Alec (Nashville)

Do you see the Arum/Mayweather disdain being a huge obstacle in future negotiations for a Pacman fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

All that money will have a way of making them work things out, at leat temorarily.

Dan (New York, NY)

My man, did you read the Kevin Iole interview with Mayweather and Ellerbe? Mayweather brought up a valid point that Oscar dictated fighters to move up to fight him and was never criticized but there seems to be a double standard with Mayweather. Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

No double standard because Oscar fought EVERYONE! He had moved up to fight Whitaker. He moved up to fight Hopkins. He came down to fight Pacquiao. Come on. And even when guys came up to fight him, like a Genaro Hernandez or a James Leija, they didn't have to come up TWO divisions like Marquez is doing to fight Mayweather.

Don (Charlotte)

Do you think Paul Williams ever gets a shot a mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

No.

Luke (Danbury, CT)

D$$, any news on when or where Isaac Hlatshwayo and Delvin Rodriguez are going to have their rematch?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Nothing is set yet. There is a purse bid scheduled for next week.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Hey Freaks, we have breaking news.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

My good buddy Gareth Davies, who covers boxing for the Telegraph in the UK is reporting that Klitschko intends to go with another opponents on June 20.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

He said he spoke to Bernd Boente, Wlad's manager, who told him, "It is almost 100 percent certain that Wladimir Klitschko will go ahead with a defense on the same date as he would have faced David Haye."

Korrey NYC

Shane moved up two divisions to fight Oscar, correct?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

No. Shane was bursting out of lightweight and skipped junior welterweight. He took two fights at welterweight before he got the Oscar fight. There was no guarantee he would get Oscar when he decided to move up.

Jesus (Puerto Rico)

Thanks for the news. Who do you think Klitschko will fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

If he in fact goes June 20 I would guess Chagaev.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

Can you explain to me why Billy Dib is in the new Fight Night Round 4 game?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

OMG! That is disgusting. I have no idea.

Greg(Los Angeles)

Dan do you have any opinion on the Ishe Smith/ESPN issue? I thought Smith would have been a much better replacement than Molina.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

I am told that ESPN refused Smith because it simply preferred Molina, believing that he would make a more exciting fight, which is hard to argue, even if Smith is a more talented boxer.

Joe (Gainesville, FL)

I'm so glad Tom asked that question. I was wondering how EA even knew who Dib was and if so, why they would include him.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Klitschko-Chagaev would be for the Ring title. When was the last time a heavyweight fight had that designation? Wouldn't that fight be a really big deal?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

It could be for the Ring title as Wlad is No. 1 and Chagaev is 3. The last Ring title fight at heavyweight was when Vitali defended it against Danny Williams before going into retirement.

Roy (Reno)

Do you have any input into FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Not into the matchmaking.

Michael (Toronto)

Would HBO still broadcast Wlad-Chagaev?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

That remains to be seen if the fight happens. I am sure there have been a lot of meetings at HBO today.

David Haye

How do you feel about Klitschko-Chagaev?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Honestly, I don't really care about it. Chagaev is not much to me. It is what it is.

Zach MPLS

Dan, Did you read the Jose Sulaiman interview where he accused HBO and GBP of conspiring to form a monopoly by lessening the importance of the sactioning bodies? I guess Jose just forgot about the strangle hold that he and Don King had on boxing that hindered the sport for 20 years.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Jose loves to blather. You can't anything he says seriously.

Matt (Washington, DC)

A cover story on Ring Online says Wlad-Chagaev would be for the Ring title.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

So there ya go. How they could approve that for the title (1 vs. 3) and not Margarito (then 1) vs. Mosley (then 3) is beyond me.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Dan, I respectfully disagree with your take on Klitschko-Chagaev. At this point the focus should be resuscitating interest in the heavyweight division. A true title fight that basically crowns THE champ is huge. If an American like Arreola, Chambers, or Johnson could ever pull the upset and beat Klitschko, heavyweight boxing could be back!

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

You are basing it on the assumption that I believe Klit-Chagaev SHOULD crown the champ.

Alan (South Africa)

Nobody disputes the fact that PBF is a great fighter. Floyd claims to be the greatest of all time just as Ali did in his time. The difference is that Ali fought all comers and Money May hasn't.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Well said.

Jim (Tacoma, WA)

If clottey wins, is there a rematch clause for Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

No, I don't believe so.

Joe (Gainesville, FL)

Why didn't Oscar step in concerning Mosley-Margarito being for the RING title? That made absolutely no sense.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

If Oscar did step in he would have been DESTROYED by the fans and media. DESTROYED for getting involved. So it's good he didn't. If he had, there would be zero credibility to Ring.

Louis (Montreal)

Matt from DC should know that the won't be a definitive heavyweight champ as long as the two brothers won't fight each other

Matt (Washington, DC)

Fair enough, but as a boxing fan don't you want there to be a perception of a true heavyweight champ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

No, I want there to actually be a heavyweight champion. One. That can't happen right now as long as Wlad and Vitali don't fight. So Ring can crown me heavyweight champ but it means nothing when the top two wont fight each other.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Lt. Dan, it's amazing the amount of Kool Aid that fans of PBF drink. People, look at the last 5 years - HE HASN'T FOUGHT ANYONE WHO WAS A TOP 5 FIGHTER! Dan didn't make this up, it's fact!

Jose (Cleveland, OH)

Dan, any news on Mario Santiago. Hasn't fought in year. Are going to get to see him on the 27th?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

He is supposed to fight on the June 27 Top Rank card but not as part of the PPV.

Randy (Shanghai)

Don't you think the reason The Ring is crowning the Wlad/ Chagaev winner with their belt is because they know the Klitchko's will never fight each other to see who is the TRUE heavyweight champ

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

That may be part of it, but it doesn't make it right.

Pete (NYC)

Why is Joshua Clottey so wildly overrated among hardcore fans (I acknowledge casual fans have never heard of him). What's his best win, Chico Corrales at 20 pounds above his best weight? A majority decision against Richard Gutierrez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

He's not wildly overrated. He is rated where he belongs, as about the fourth best welterweight. He has a great chin, decent power and made a good account against Margarito with an injury during the fight.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Raffy D. If you could play god and put in your choice of a replacement opponent for Vladdy, who would it be?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Vitali.

Darris Detroit

Come on Dan mayweather came from super featherweight all the way up to jr middle weight in never lost you guys give floyd no credit at all and i think it is a shame

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Craig (UK)

Dan, Ishe Smiths people are kicking up a fuss about ESPN turning him down as an opponent to Perez. To be fair, how can a person who throws seven punches a round be considered for big tv networks?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Bottom line: Ishe's a good fighter and ESPN decided to televise a different fight. It happens every day in this business.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

We have breaking news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Ross Greenburg from HBO has informed me that if indeed Klitschko elects to face Chagaev on June 20, HBO will pass. The network is only interested in doing the Haye fight on the rescheduled date of July 11.

julian nyc

How come Andre ward isnt in your top 10 rankings for super middle?? There are sum bums on that list that ward is definitly better than

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Andre may very well be but he has yet to beat the caliber of fighter to earn his way into that top 10. He's right there though and I don't believe it will be long until he's there and there for a long time.

Justin (Las Vegas, NV)

I guess HBO is serious about no more bad fights (at least on paper)

Louis (Montreal)

Does HBO matter that much for Klitschko? He will still make boatloads of money in Germany

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

He will make a lot but HBO pays seven figures for his fights so that's still a big hit.

Jordan (New York, NY)

Dan, what's up w/ Hopkins vs Carl Froch. The biased BBC.com certainly thinks that fight will happen.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I don't see it, at least not this year.

Jesus (Puerto Rico)

Do you think HBO decission on the Kitschko fight will put more pressure now on klitschko to wait until july 11th?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I'm not really sure. I'm not yet certain if Klitschko IS fighting Chagaev on June 20 or just still considering waiting for Haye on July 11. It's a fluid situation.

Rob (Philadelphia)

I can't understand why HBO would pass, any suggestions?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I would imagine they are tired of throwing good money after bad in a crappy heavyweight division that will not have a true top dog for the next while because 1 wont fight 2. On top of that, Chagaev makes crappy fights in general and supposedly has hepatitis. Not to mention that if HBO doesn't show that fight it will have a couple of million bucks to go toward something way more interesting that they can televise live in primetime instead of going all the way to Europe for a fight they'll have to show live in the afternoon and on tape in primetime. There are just a lot of issues they are considering. These deals are not done in a bubble. Every decision HBO makes on one fight has an impact on the rest of the schedule.

Big Al "finito", East los angeles , ca

You sure Mosley didn't jump straight into De La hoya from lightweight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Why don't you go look it up just to make yourself feel better. But, no, he didn't fight Oscar in his first welterweight fight. He fought a very tough fight with Wilfredo Rivera and one with Willy Wise first.

Matt, LA

I don't get HBO's rationale. Haye means nothing in the US. Chagaev means nothing in the US. Chagaev is a true undefeated heavyweight at least.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Haye has talked an ubelievable game and could have a major future in the sport. Chagaev is neither.

Joe (Gainesville, FL)

If Klitschko and his handlers decide to go with Chagaev on June 20, will ESPN Classic be in the running to air it with HBO not interested?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Dude dont get so ahead of yourself. All of this os playing out in this chat in real time.

chrisdiggidy, oklahoma city

wouldn't it be nice if hbo decides to pony up the money to show the calderon fight next weekend instead of the klitschko fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

You are clearly on drugs. Please don't drive.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Good points Dan. But I bet another factor is in play too: HBO wants the Haye fight and is playing chicken hoping that Wlad will reconsider and go with the pushed-back Haye fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Certainly could be but remember one thing: HBO is not the broadcaster putting up the most money. That's RTL in Germany. However, if Haye is out that means the Klitschko side would lose the HBO money and the Setanta money, because Setanta, which is in severe financial distress, wouldn't likely put up anything to show Klitschko-Chagaev.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, I think that it's a myth that you need a good heavyweight division. Fans will pay for good fights, regardless of weight. I applaud HBO for passing and they will hopefully put that money toward a good, exciting fight.

Akira(Columbus, Oh)

Wlad vs Chagaev would end up just like Wlad vs Sultan Ibragimov...BORING

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Very possible. That is sort of what I think.

Jon (SF)

Let me mention that Haye is with Golden Boy. Dan, please do not overlook this fact.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

That has nothing to do with it. Golden Boy is not even involved with Haye's fights in any meaningful way unless he comes to America to fight.

Pain(Vegas)

I like the decision of not buying Chagaev/Wlad, they have been throwing away too much money on crappy fights in the Heavyweight division. Well done Mr. Greenburg

Cologedo (NY)

Dannabis, tell me you're very disappointed this Wlad-Haye fight is off. All the hype for nothing

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

I'm disappointed because a lot of people were looking forward to it and it was one of the few heavyweight fights people were excited about.

Michael(Hollywood, CA)

Why would Wlad prefer not to wait for Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

I'm not sure but if Haye has a back injury why would three weeks really make much of a difference anyway?

Manny, CT

Why wouldn't Cunningham-Braithwaite or Angulo-Romanov be aired July 11th? Thats an elimniator and vacant title bout. DeMarco-Adjaho has less significance.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Because that's what Showtime decided to do.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, can we please stop talking about a terrible heavy. division?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

No because 90 percent of the questions and comments are about it.

Neal (Puerto Rico)

Any news on Daniel Santos?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

No.

Cologedo (NY)

Dan when i have to pick the Diaconu vs PAscal fight for my fantasy league who do you recommend? I don't know anything about Diaconu and i have seen Pascal once he was a very athletic guy.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I think it will be a good fight but I like Diaconu. He's bigger, I think physically stronger and I think a solid chin as well. Pascal is probably a little quicker but tough fight for him.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, let's say Wlad goes with Chagaev and ko's him. Does Haye get the next fight or will he be kicked to the curb?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Wlad is obligated to a Povetkin fight after his next fight.

Robert (South Jersey)

How come you never hear of Pavlik or Authur calling out Felix Strum? I woud like to see those fights and I'm sure tohers would agree.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Why would they call him out? They're ahead of him. He needs to be calling them out.

Michael (Roxbury, NJ)

Dan great work this week. This is a weird but serious question: have you ever seen a boxer have to return to the dressing room during his ringwalk or during introductions because he had to use the bathroom real bad? Seems like after all of these fights we would see that at least once??? Thanks... have a great weekend

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Dude that is almost as weird a question as last week's acne question. Jeeez.

Darian (Phoenix)

Chagaev getting to fight Wlad would basically be rewarding him for for having a fight called off because of his hepatitus. Gotta love the HW division these days!

Rick (Saint Paul, MN)

Just got the wisdom teeth out an hour ago and the first thing I did was come home and get on the chat. Qualify for any level of freak status or should it just be expected that I do that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Expected.

Ryan (Cleveland)

I concur with the boring call on Wlad/Chagaev. It sucks watching pawing. I would almost rather watch Holmes-Butterbean II.

Matt, LA

What's next for Cory Spinks? I know he is has a rep for bad fights -- but Lattimore/Judah/Karmazin were all very entertaining.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

He's offering Kermit Cintron a shot.

Le`Qentez(Waterbury, CT)

When do you think Deontay Wilder will begin to fight bigger fights, as opposed to his monthly matches?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

It will be a long time. At least a year-plus, probably two or three years.

Bing(Philly)

I hope Wlad goes with another opponent on June 20th. Stick to Haye for talking all the smack. Make him wait while Wlad cleans out the division with his mandatories. It's a worse punishment than actually fighting him. Kinda like what Sugar Ray did to Hagler. Haye didn't deserve a title shot anyway

NYPD Blue (Brooklyn)

Chaggy is far more offensive-minded than Sultan was. It's silly to say that the Chaggy fight would be boring based on what Sultan did.

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

It's not based on what Sultan did. It's based on having seen a lot of Chagaev's crappy fights.

Jon (DC)

Dan, how can you not mention Andrew "Six Heads" Lewis in the bathroom question. Dude quit a fight in the middle because he couldn't hold it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

The question was about when the guy was coming to the ring, not during a fight.

Chris (Memphis, TN)

I go to a local fight series at the Fitzgeralds Casino in Tunica, MS and have been impressed over the past year with Shawn Porter along with Fernando Guerrero. Just wanted to know if you think they are solid prospects?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I like both of them as prospects. I have seen some of the Fitz shows on DVD and seen both guys fight in person as well as on ESPN. Guerrero has a fight coming up in his hometown in Maryland and Porter will be on the undercard.

Jim (Balt, MD)

Tavoris Cloud is a joke. Hasn't fought since august, calls bad chad out, and then turns down an opportunity to get exposure, big money, and a shot at dawson if he won on the undercard. He should repeat Winky 101: big dreams and empty pockets!!

steven (ponce, puerto rico) [via mobile]

I read in an online article that celestino caballero is calling juanma lopez a chicken for supposedly avoiding him... what's your take?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

That Caballero wants a payday since even though he knocked out Molitor, he can't get arrested on a US network.

Nik (Los Angeles)

I see HBO is in the business now of preventing unification. Bravo!

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

You're an idiot. How is HBO preventing a unification? Chagaev doesn't even have a real belt right now and they can still fight even if HBO decides not show it. Get in reality please.

Jacob (Memphis, TN)

Dan, Klitschko was not getting any of the Setanta money that was how Haye was getting paid he was getting all of it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Not true. Klitschko was getting part of it.

Anthony (NY)

Do you ever watch the fights on TV with friends, or would they distract you too much from doing your job?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

I don't like watching fights with other people but every now and then I do if I am not at the fight.

Brooks (Cleveland)

Love the breaking news during the chat Dan. I've long bing a critic of HBO but I must applaud that decision. Well done HBO, save the budget for better fights.

Jordan (New York, NY)

Big problem w/ the July 11th date...they would be going up against UFC 100.

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Sort of. If Klitschko-Haye happens, it would air live in the afternoon. The primetime replay would that night but UFC is on PPV, not on regular cable, so I don't see that as a huge deal.

Derek ( Edmonton, Alberta)

Dan , I am disgusted by HBO's decision not to show Wlad vs Chagaev. Chagaev is vastly superior to Haye and it would crown the true champ. It looks like the precedent has been set for the continuance of ABC titles and undeserving hype jobs talking their way into title fights.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I dont agree. I also dont agree that Wlad vs Chagaev crowd the "true" champ.

Nik (Los Angeles)

C'mon Mr. Rafael. You can disagree without resorting to something like that. My opinion is that Chagaev is the legit WBA champ since he never lost it in the ring against Valuev. Isn't it also possible the WBA may keep Valuev/Chagaev as co-champs since it's possible Valuev pulled out of the fight on a technicality? From my understanding of the WBA's ruling in February, Chagaev would be stripped if he was "medically unfit" to fight so it's quite feasible Chagaev was healthy enough to participate had Valuev taken the injection. Additionally, the Ring belt provides another hefty incentive. Thank you for your hard work and providing boxing fans with the inside scoop.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

There are so many things wrong with what you wrote it is stunning. Co-champs? A guy should have to take an injection to fight and that injection is not guaranteed to work against him catching a serious disease? Using the word "legit" and "WBA" in the same sentence is also grounds for being committed to a mental hospital.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

I want to point out one other thing about why I don't agree Klit-Chagaev should be for the Ring title. No. 2 Vitali still has a vague claim to the title. He owned it, gave it up when he retired due to injury. Fair enough. But when he came back, has won two fights in easy fashion against legit contenders. So he has at least a claim that he should fight for the vacant title. Not Chagaev.

Rick (SpringTown Ca)

Dan- In regards to Andre Ward not being in your top 10 at super middle weight... Me and a buddy of mine had a discussion on who Ward could beat at 168 and came up with Kessler and maybe Taylor as the two guys he would have the most problems with. We felt he would beat the other 168. Your thoughts??

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

I think he very well might be beat many of the top 10 guys. But to get into the top 10, you need do prove yourself generally unless a division sucks so bad at the bottom of the top 10 somebody has to occupy the spot.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, can we now ban Nik?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

I will leave it to a vote of the Freak Nation. I'm on the fence.

Banishment

Nik, Get in my belly!

Braindamaged2too...(Asylum)

to Nik (L.A.)........tell them it's the voices guiding you. Besides they'll give you your own paper slippers!

Craig (UK)

"Using the word "legit" and "WBA" in the same sentence is also grounds for being committed to a mental hospital." HAHAHAHAHA brilliant

Josh

How the heck did Vitali ever become the Ring Champion. He did far less in his 2003-04 run that Wladimir has done since 2006.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

He beat No. 3 Corrie Sanders to claim the vacant title, another move I didn't agree with.

Andrew (Nashville TN)

Nik was respectfull, so I vote he stays.

andy (passaic nj [via mobile]

Nik! Stand in the corner now!

Matt (Washington, DC)

I say no, he's making a cogent argument that's just hard to swallow because the WBA is so vile generally.

Andrew (Nashville TN)

If nothing else, wouldn't Chagaev losing to Wlad get rid of the ridiculous WBA dual championship?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

The Freaks have voted. Nik is not banned.

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

The best part of all this Klitschko/Haye/Chagaev discussion is so little on Mayweather this week!!!!!

Derek ( Edmonton, Alberta)

I'm disappointed by your stance on the Chagaev fight Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

OK.

James (Myrtle Beach, SC)

What can you tell me about Paulus Moses? Will he eventually have an impact on the lightweight division?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Decent fighter from Africa. I have seen him on tape. He holds the nonsense WBA "regular" title at lightweight. I don't see him as a top 10 lightweight right now. He has a defense coming up against Kimbrough.

tom (Melbourne)

Dan what's next for mundine? A fight in the USA? How bout winky

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

I have no idea what is next for him and I do not care one iota.

Jim (Tacoma, WA)

Why would HBO care who he fights? We know Vlad should win both fights easily. It should be just about showcasing Vlad. I actually think Chagaev would last longer.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

That's one of the most ignorant things I have ever read.

Anthony (NY)

Greenburg is missing the boat here. If this is for The Ring belt, the winner's marketability becomes that much greater. They could advertise it as a fight for THE heavyweight championship.

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

Consdering mentioning the Ring titles is barred on HBO I doubt it would matter.

Steven (New York)

Dan the Ring Magazine rules state that when #2 is unavailable the belt can be #1 vs #3. Who expects Wlad to fight his brother? That is sick.

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

The rules say nothing about the No. 2 fighter being "unavilable," only that in "some instances" they can crown a champion by a 1 vs 3.

Hayeter, NYC

Haye is a joke. It's time to give this jibbering idiot the hook and let Wlad fight someone who can do more than just run his mouth. Chaggy, Valuev, Dimitrenko, whomever. Too bad Arreola is always so out of shape or he could have had this fight.

Steve (NV)

ODLH didn't come down in weight for the Pac-man fight. He just fought Forbes at 147.

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Not true. That was a 150-pound fight.

E.L. Trujillo (Mile High City)

Happy Friday DTM! I get the sense (especially from Roach) that Pacquiao's next opponent is undoubtedly Cotto, provided he defeats Clottey. With such contrasting styles, which many believe favor Manny, it's a fight Team Pac-Man wants. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

I think nothing has been decided at all.

Andy (OH)

Since this is a slow weekend on the schedule, what are your predictions for Sunday? Edge/Hardy Ladder Match and Orton/Batista in the cage.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

I can't wait for the Edge-Hardy match. I'm hoping Hardy takes it but I have my doubts. I have no doubt Orton retains.

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Hold on guys. Bat phone.

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

On the Bat Phone with Shelly Finkel getting an update on the Klitschko situation.

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

OK, here's the deal as of right now: The Klitschko camp has not even yet received a medical report from from the Haye side detailing the injury and saying whether he will able to fight on July 11. They are supposed to get a report later today,

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

In addition, the Chagaev fight is NOT a done deal yet for June 20, only that HBO would not show it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Further, it is still down to this: either Wlad fights Chagaev on June 20 without HBO or he fights Haye July 11 with HBO. Shelly said the camp has NOT made any decision yet and won't until at the least the point where they see Haye's medical report.

Rob (Jersey)

I just hit refresh button 5000 times in the past 30 seconds

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Seek help for your obsessive/compulsive disorder.

mr.marksmith

Dan, reading between the lines what is your opinion of the news update?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

I am not reading between the lines. It is what it is.

Rejean (Toronto)

Hey Dan, what's up with Demetrius Andrade these days?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

He's fighting on ESPN2 in a couple of weeks.

RS3 (Stamford CT) [via mobile]

Sounds like Haye's people are getting the injury excuse ready if the fight still happens and Wlad smashes him...

Keith H (Seattle, WA)

Dan, you're amazing. Breaking news TWICE in a three hour chat. You have no equals.

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

I'm trying Freaks.

Mark (NYC)

Slowwwww weekend in boxing does not equal slow day in chat room...

John (San Fran)

Dan...3 hours this Friday. Thank you cause I definitely am looking to avoid as much work as possible before leaving to enjoy the weekend.

Joel (NY)

Hey, dan it's my birthday today, can't wait for Extreme Rules on Sunday!

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

Happy Birthday, let's go Hardy!

E.L. Trujillo (Mile High City)

If Klitchko-Haye happens on 4/11, I hope HBO times it so that we can also watch Agbeko-Darchinyan.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

If it happens on July 11 it wont be a problem because HBO will show it in the late afternoon live and Showtime is on at night.

Cologedo (NY)

Dan what do you think Wlad should do? I would wait and fight Haye if I could since the $$ would be there.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

I think they should do what they are doing -- at least wait for the medical report and then make a decision.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, can Wlad's people really take the chance on Haye not backing out of the July date also?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

That is one of their chief concerns.

Matt (Boston)

DR, you need an energy drink endorsement. Your chats regularly run into overtime. Unreal. Thanks, it's appreciated.

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

I'm flying high on bottled water and a little KISS!

Mike in San Ramon

Seems likea win-win for Haye, take the fight you lose and blame it on the injury, you win say you did it hurt.

Jeff (Phoenix)

Dan, I understand that making weight is a painful process...how come 24/7 never puts much emphasis on this part of the sport?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

What are they going to do? Get camera shots of a guy looking at a piece of cake lovingly? Or better yet, video of a guy in the sauna sweating his ass off?

Derek ( Edmonton, Alberta)

Dan, would Wlad's HBO contract allow him to take the Chagaev fight to Showtime if HBO passes?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

I do not believe Wladimir is under an exclusive contract any longer.

Bad pun of the week...

I guess Haye literally "backed out" of this fight...

Iron Beach Fl.

Wouldn't it be considered very un-professional to have not sent a med. report by now if injury is legit

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

It is suprising.

JJD (Seattle)

I just want to say, I saw Pac-Mosley on ESPNEWS and ran right to the boxing page to see Dan's breaking news report. When I didn't see it, I suspected ESPN had been duped by a suspect source. As DK would say, if you are a FAN, only listen to DAN.

JP (Columbus, OH)

I think that video footage of Oscar de la Hoya not eating would be riveting. *Yawn*

Jon (Los Angeles)

Dan, what do boxers usually eat/drink between the weigh-in and the fight? Is there anything standard, like gatorade and spaghetti, etc?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

Pasta, water, chicken, fish, vegetables.

Bill, Cincy

I have freinds that visited Haye at his camp and said he looked bad in sparing. They ere not surprised he ducked out

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

I am also told by a friend who was at camp that he had looked bad in training.

RS3 (Stamford CT) [via mobile]

Is that medical report from Haye's camp going to include an x-ray of his glass jaw?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

Well said.

E.L. Trujillo (Mile High City)

Have you ever considered doing stand-up comedy? Your responses to unprepared questions are pretty darn hilarious.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Not seriously, but I do write some comedy bits and keep a file on them.

Damjan (Charlotte, NC)

Nothing wrong with doing a little 30 second montage of a guy in the rubber suit, sauna, and going over his meal plan the weeks before a fight

Derek ( Edmonton, Alberta)

....it's 24/7 , not The Biggest Loser.

The Fabulous Moohla Parts Unknown

Dan, Is it true David Haye injured his back when he missed a swonton working out with Jeff Hardy?

Joel (laredo, tx)

What's up with Vicente Escobedo? Is GBP still working a deal to fight Kasidis on Aug.22nd?

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

They wanted to make that fight on Aug. 22 on the HBO undercard but Katsidis has decided he doesn't want that fight.

Tom (Alabaster, Alabama)

Dan, so you are telling me HBO will Show Klitschko vs Autin and Klitschko vs Thompson but not Chagaev who is undefeated and for The Ring Magazine belt? That is idiotic.

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

On the Austin fight, HBO was contractually obligated to show it. I think they may have also been on the Thompson fight.

bill (pgh)

Jim Lampley's voice: "following World Championship Boxing on the East Coast is One Night Stand with Dan Rafael"

Joel Julio [via mobile]

Papa, is that you?

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Can you fight Wladimir?

Jon (DC)

Can refs please start to consistently penalize holding?

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

I wish they would.

Joel (NY)

Dan, there's going to be two televised fights June 19th at the Bell Centre, correct?

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

Yes, Diaconu-Pascal and Ross-Simms plus possible swing fights if there are quick knockouts.

Ryan Staten Island NY

When is Nonito Donaire fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

August 15.

Ronak (NY)

You think Chris Arreola could be available for june 20?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

No chance.

Oprah

Hasn't it maybe crossed your mind that Haye looked bad in sparring and training because of his back.

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

Sure. I didn't say a reason he supposedly looked bad, just that I was told he did.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, with regards to the question about what boxers eat/drink before a fight......isn't it true that the corners are not allowed to use anything but water in the corner between rounds? You would think Gatorade would be an asset during a tough fight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

In some places, sports drinks are allowed.

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

By the way Freaks -- there is a new blog that was just posted!

Ronak (NY)

Would you be interested in Kevin Johnson vs Klitschko?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

No, not yet since Johnson is still very untested.

Chris (Concord, CA)

What's happened to Kassim Ouma the past few years? Is he just shot? Its too bad because he was such a great story.

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

He just might be. He's lived a hard life and it has probably caught up to him. There's a new documentary out about him that looks terrific. I just got a screener than I am looking forward to watching. I'm in the docu briefly, so I need to check it out.

andrew (passaic nj) [via mobile]

1st timer.where do I go for the blog?

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

How about espn.com/boxing and look under the main picture in the spot where it says blog and has my picture and a link?

Tom (Danbury,CT)

How does Chagaev still have a belt? The WBA is so awful.

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

He is the champion in recess!!!! And don't you forget it!!!!!!

Hayeter (NC)

I think Haye has now unmasked himself as the joker he was all along. He was getting killed in sparring, has found out he can't fight at heavyweight, and now he is panicking because of all the yapping he's done. He's really in a spot: fight Wlad and get annihilated, or back out and be a laughingstock forever.

Ryan, Saratoga Springs

Dan the Man! Is Friday Night Fights coming back to the Saratoga City Center this summer and if it is, I would like to buy you a beer at the Tin and Lint!

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

As of now, there is no show slated for Saratoga.

Paddy from Chicago

When you say Kassim Ouma lived a hard life are you only refering to his upbring or partying "hard" outside the ring? Or a combo of both?

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

Both. Put it this way -- I was once in Las Vegas for a fight and ran into Kassim in the MGM. He had a beer in both hands.

Joe, RI

The rumor is that David Haye hurt his hand from tooting his own horn too much.

Klit(UK)

Breaking news, i hear that its not David Haye's hand or back. The word i'm getting is his heart fell out his chest.....and he is trying to back out

Andrew (Nashville TN)

Chagaev has certainly earned the "in recess" part of that title!

Jack (UK)

ROY JONES asked to fill in for Haye on the June 20???

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

A call was made.

Braindamaged2too...(Asylum)

When you say you write comedy bits are they like jokes or funny replies to questions? And if they're jokes are they for you and your own use?

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Just my own jokes and observations of life for my own amusement and the amusement of my wife.

Nick - South Dakota

I've looked all over the internet, is the Tyson docu coming to video? didn't show here.

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

Yes, it is coming out on video shortly. I just can recall the exact date.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Your blog and some mentions on this chat in past weeks have highlighted Maidana as a live, live dog against Ortiz. I take it your view is based on seeing him fight? His resume doesn't exactly jump off the page at me and I think awfully highly of Ortiz....

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

I have seen him fight and he's good.

Nick - South Dakota

I just got fired for chatting, see ya guys (from home) next week.

joe (philly)

When you said Roy Jones was considered to fill in for Haye, were you kidding or serious?

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

His camp contacted the Klit camp. Doesn't mean he was seriously considered.

Joe (Gainesville, FL)

Do you think Adamek was serious in one day moving up to face Wlad?

Dan Rafael
  (3:24 PM)

I don't know about facing Wlad, but I think eventually Adamek will give heavyweight a try.

bill (pgh)

Tyson DVD release is August 18th

matt, tx

Bob Arum said Edwin Valero was "in the mix" of fighters to fight Manny. Seems like the last guy Pac Man is interested in fighting.

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

Bob says a lot of things.

Joe (Gainesville, FL)

Nick is my nominee for Freak of the Week.

JM

OMG! I just got back to my desk, and you're still chatting!!! Are you going for the record? (What is the record, by the way?)

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

Not even close to my record. I think I once did one that was more than four hours.

Jack(NYC)

I think that we should give Wlad some respect, the dude tried to make it happen. Haye has still not given Wlad a medical report... Sounds like a duck If there was a medical report in his Wlad's hands i would not blame Haye. What do you think dan?

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

I think they need a medical report before they can make a decision. To me, with all the crap Haye talked, he needs to be on his death bed to pull out.

Paul (Carlsbad, CA)

Hey Dan, the other day on the bottom line on ESPNEWS it read that Manny had agreed to fight Shane Mosley and never saw anything else about on here so can you confirm or is it just speculation?

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 PM)

Because they ran something on the Bottom Line that never should have run on the Bottom Line.

Jorge Az

Hey Dan, dont you think they should put an asterisk on the record of the opponents marga-cheato beat? This could help show one of their losses is tainted.

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 PM)

No.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Just read the blog. If DiBella signed THE Isiah Thomas, he would have no problem finding an opponent. Knick fans would line up to get a chance to kick his a##.

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

Absolutely hilarious.

Cologedo (NYC)

How many cats currently live in your house?

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

You're weird.

steven (ponce, puerto rico) [via mobile]

Edwin Valero was quoted as saying that one of the conditions of him signing with Top Rank was for him to eventually fight Pacquiao. It sounded like it was a contractual obligation. Any truth to that ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

I haven't read his contract but there is no way you could put that in a contract because the other guy has to agree to.

Lou, MD

Can Haye's back problems be related to the fact that he has no spine?

Jorge (East Los Angeles)

Dan, Read your blog about the Malinaggi/Diaz Fight. Is that fight for sure going to be on August 22, or any chance it could sneak on to the Mayweather/Marquez caed?

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

If that fight happens, it will be on its own card Aug. 22.

Smooth (NYC)

Wlad loses nothing by waiting until July 11. Why not wait for a much bigger fight that everyone wants to see?

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

Because if Haye bailed this week how can they be sure he will be OK to go three weeks later?

Berndawg

Amazing stuff about Cloud. He'll probably be hiring Mosley's PR people next.

Haye (Cyprus)

Dan, would you mind standing behind me and popping my back?

Jim Lampley

Stop it, Dan! You can stop it whenever you like - the Freaks are out on their feet...Dan Rafael's gonna let it go on!

andrew (passaic nj) [via mobile]

Dan! What's your nationality?

Dan Rafael
  (3:36 PM)

American.

Dan Rafael
  (3:37 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the epic chat today. Not bad for a weekend without a big fight. Hope you check out the notebook and the brand new blog that was posted during the chat. Next week we've got a big one with Cotto-Clottey, so I will talk to you from New York City. Have a great weekend. Peace.
