Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Paul (Knoxville,TN)

As a Saints fan...I dont have to feel bad for wearing a Panthers "58-51 Keep Pounding" shirt right??...considering what Mills and Fields stand for (and both are former Saints)...that would be the one time it would be ok for a Who Dat to wear the wrong colors right?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:46 PM)

No, don't feel guilty about wearing that shirt. In fact, feel good about it and wear it proudly. Sam Mills was one of the finest men I've ever known. One of the highlights of my career was sitting down with him about a month before he died for a story I was doing on the USFL. Let's all remember Sam very fondly.

Iperoig (São paulo)

He pat, big fan of your work here,is there any concern about lance moore miss the first game against the lions on week one because of his dislocated shoulder?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:47 PM)

No, Payton said Moore should be 100 percent by start of camp.

Drew (New Orleans)

Hey Pat! Great stuff you have been writing. Ok, with the retirement of Dan Morgan, should the Saints do anything to address OLB?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:48 PM)

They say they're going with what they've got. Not sure that's really true. If I were them, I'd go get Derrick Brooks, but I'm not them.

John (Lafayette, La)

Pat, who stood out in the bucs quarterback competition while you were covering them yesterday? How is Luke looking?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:50 PM)

Luke looks fine -- efficient. Freeman had that one bomb that I wrote about that was absolutely beautiful. Fun to watch.

Easy (SC)

Who are going to be the starting DEs for the Panthers? I don't want to automatically assume it will be Brown and Peppers...

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:51 PM)

All right, if you want another answer, how 'bout Johnson and Brayton. Or Peppers and Johnson -- actually, I think those are two best DEs right now.

Rum (N'awlins (Avondale))

Hey Pat, great take on Reggie. I'm so tired of hearing folks say that he can't run between the tackles--I think most o them are opposing teams DCs.If you were a DC, would you prefer Reggie running the ball against the heart of your D 25/game? Or Constantly moving around--making you have to guess where to cover him? Where a wrong guess lets him have to only beat 1 or 2 DBs to score.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:53 PM)

Rum's referring to the column I posted on Reggie Bush this morning, if you haven't seen it. Basically, I'm saying let Reggie be Reggie and don't compare him to Deuce or the traditional feature back. If he stays healthy, I think he can have a huge year.

Devin C (Jacksonville NC)

Pat, months ago you said that AFTER the draft, you would predict the NFC South Standings and records. So, predict away?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:54 PM)

All right and this is subject to change. But, right now, I'll give you my order and we'll do records as season gets closer:1. Carolina2. New Orleans3. Atlanta4. Tampa Bay

aldo (bogota colombia)

hi pat, a big buc fan here!! sorry for my english, i have a question. what do u know about ruud deal, we need him a lot, any chance to give him the deal he wants?? thx man for all your work

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

Agree that Bucs need him. But there's no need to rush on this one because he can't become an unrestricted free agent in 2010 -- only restricted. Then again, they've got all sorts of cap room, so why not do it now?

Sam (Atlanta)

Have you gotten a solid denial from the Redskins on interest in Michael Vick? It seems to me to be the most likely destination: Snyder has guaranteed sellouts for years no matter what, he always falls in love with stars, and he's spent the whole offseason trying to replace/undermine Jason Campbell. Plus the area is filled with Virginia Tech fans who may be a little more forgiving. The Washington Post had a poll and over half of the respondents were willing to have him back (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/the-vick-question.html).

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

Wouldn't rule that out. Anything's possible with Snyder.

Wes (Charlotte)

Patty Cake, I'm doin my best to keep my eyes open on this beautiful friday.......AT WORK. Gimme somethin on the Panther front to wake me up!

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

Very quiet on Carolina front. Just waiting for something -- ANYTHING -- to happen on Peppers. I say he holds out of camp and comes in right before start of season.

Melissa (New Orleans)

I heard during a newsbreak last night that Pacman Jones is currently in New Orleans, but I can't find any information regarding this. Have you heard anything?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Haven't heard that one. Might be there for other reasons. Can't see him with Saints.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Could you see Derek Brooks retireing?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Becoming more possible by the day. In fact, I'd say that's probably the most likely scenario.

Rache' Porter (eight 13 ward)

Big shout outs to the big homie PY.keep doin ya thang ya digg.I saw on your top ten DB's list that T Jack36 was left out.I surely thought he would've made the list. your thoughts???also, what are the chances that Rah keeps both Bryant and Nugent???

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Take a look at blog. I just put up a post explaining why I didn't put Jackson on the list. As for kicker, I think they'll only keep one. Which one, I don't know -- they truly will battle it out in camp.

Paul (Knoxville,TN)

Is it likely that the Saints are just saying they dont want Derrick Brooks to drive down the possibility that he would ask for a lot of money?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

Entirely possible. The NFL often works that way.

Wes (charlotte)

Hey, Pay, any new updates on how Jarret's coming along during summer school?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

Everything I've heard is he's doing well. I think he might have finally started to win coaches over at end of last season and should be able to build on that.

Sharell (NCFalconFan)

PY!! Any news on when Roddy White will resign with Falcons? Also read report today that they are trying to lock down Norwood. Have you heard anything?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

Not sure anything's close, but those two would be next logical targets. Falcons already set precedent for locking up young, core players with Babineaux and Jenkins and White and Norwood may be even more important.

Mike (Omaha, NE)

Pat, love the chat, what do you think are gonna be the buccs strongest points, and alternatively, their weakest points this season.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

O-line and RB are strongest. DTs are weakest area.

Dylan (Las Vegas)

Pat, what do you think, is Dexter Jackson done in Tampa?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Not yet, they'll give him a shot in camp to show something. You don't just give up on a second-round pick after one season.

Dylan (Las Vegas)

Hey Pat,There is talk about the Bucs going after another veteran receiver, but word out of Tampa is that has two guys Sloughter and Cambell are making waves. What are the chances Tampa goes with these guys and pass on bringing someone else in?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

Those guys are doing well, but I think you'll see Bucs add a veteran receiver at some point. They've been sniffing around several guys and they have cap room to work with. I think something will happen before camp.

The Baron (NOLA)

I know Sean Payton made a statement about not needing any more linebackers after Morgan's retirement, but do you think Derrick Brooks might be a possibility for the Saints? Why not?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Like I said, NFL teams are often coy about that kind of thing. They have to be because it's a competitive business. I wouldn't totally rule it out.

Amit Bajaj (clinton mississippi)

who on the saints roster is poised for a breakout year in your opinion pat?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Meachem.

David (Atlanta)

Pat you do a great job and I like you work, keep it up! If you had to guess which NFL team do you thiink would give # 7 a shot?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Washington. Maybe Minnesota if Favre doesn't come back. But my guess is Vick does a year in UFL and comes back to NFL in 2010.

Nick (Tampa)

Pat... you Ranked the NFCS DB's... how did TANARD JACKSON not make that list; especially when you throw Jenkens on there as a rookie? Fail my friend, big fail

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

Take a look at the blog. My explanation on Jackson is posted on there now. Short answer: I don't see him in the top 10 DBs right now. Nice rookie year, but what'd he do last year?

Jason (In Tampa)

Pat, there have been consistent reports of the Bucs looking for a high profile receiver. Holt was talked about, Burress we are following. I was wondering about maybe getting Matt Jones since we are not overly concerned with character in T-Town (i'm not anyways). Your thoughts??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

Nice ideas, but I don't think so. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Keep an eye on Marvin Harrison. I'm not saying anything is going on yet, but keep an eye on that.

Tony Fiametta (Carolina)

I'll be a top-5 blocking fullback by the end of the year.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

You could be. Mr. Hoover's got a lot of mileage on those legs.

Mike (Rock Hill, SC)

Can you even compare Freeman in OTAs to Ryan last year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

No, not at this point. Freeman's a project -- tons of potential, but he's not nearly as polished as Ryan was.

RICK (MONROE, NC)

PAT, WE MISS YOU IN THE QUEEN CITY. THE LOCAL COVERAGE JUST DOESN'T SEEM TO BE AS GOOD WITHOUT YOU HERE. WE ALL KNOW JOHN FOX IS A RUN FIRST COACH. HE'LL THROW IT DOWNFIELD JUST ENOUGH TO KEEP DEFENSES HONEST BUT SMASHMOUTH FOOTBALL IS HIS PREFERENCE. THAT BEING SAID, HAVE THE PANTHERS DONE ENOUGH ALONG THE OFFENSIVE LINE TO REPLACE THE 3 BACKUPS THEY LOST IN FREE AGENCY. LOOSING A GUARD SCARES ME MORE THAN LOOSING OTAH OR GROSS. TRAVELLE CAN SILDE OUTSIDE FOR A FEW GAMES. iF THAT HAPPENS THOUGH WHO IS BEST SUITED TO FILL THE GAP. i KNOW THEY ARE TIOGHT AGAINST THE SALARY CAP BUT IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE THAT COMES CHEAP THAT MAY BE A SERVICABLE BACKUP...THANKS AGAIN

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Not much cap room to work with at all. They pretty much have to go with what they've got. But they're good at developing young linemen. I think McKenzie Bernadeau (not sure if I'm spelling that right) is the guy they're high on.

Larry (Charlotte)

Every year we see articles in the Char. Observer about guys, such as Mike Goodson, having impressive camps leading up to the Panthers' season. This year it seems there are quite a few of these guys. I just don't see room on the roster for more than 1 or 2 of them. Who really has a shot at making the team this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Good point. Really only one or two of them will. The media, and I'm certainly very guilty of this too, writes a lot about the under-the-radar guys this time of year. The reason is because we're trying not to burn all our training camp stories. It's understandable, but we probably make way too much out of guys that have no chance to make the team. Also folks, we put in a new chat system here and there are some kinks that are being worked out. I'm not seeing all your questions, so resubmit them if you wish and we'll try to get it worked out. Thanks.

Phil (Tampa)

Pat i agree with your T-Jack assessment. he had a bad year last year and doesnt deserve on that list. but if jermaine phillips was still a safety, where would you rank him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

Thank you. Good point on Phillips. If he was still a safety, I probably would have put him ahead of Roman Harper.

Clint (Atlanta)

How are the defensive position battles shaping out thus far in Atlanta? Any word on players that are sticking out?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

Stephan Nicholas is doing really well. Think he'll be a breakout player. Gonna have a big story on him next week.

David (High Point, NC)

Do you think Jason Carter has a realistic chance of knocking Jarrett from the number 3 spot? The kid looked great in training camp last year!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

No, I think they're ready to go with Jarrett.

Nick (Tampa)

Pat... DT is a clear weakness on the Bucs d-line (as you noted) what are the odds Sims steps up and becomes the 1st round gem he should be in Bates' system now. The guy is a moose lets be honest...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Not sure Sims will ever be what they thought he was when he came out of college. But I think Bates can at least make him functional.

Keith (NJ)

Hey Pat, a name that hasn't been mentioned a whole heck of a lot this offseason with regard to the Falcons D-line is Kroy Biermann. A lot of the talk, and rightly so, has been about whether Anderson will develop, whether or not Chanuncey Davis can step in or about Sidbury because of his novelty. I thought Biermann did a really nice job as a situational pass rusher. What are your thoughts on him, his development and what their plans are for him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

Good point. They like Biermann. They'll give Anderson his shot. If he doesn't step up, I think you'll see a lot of Davis and Biermann.

Daryl (Springfield, NJ)

Hey Pat, I love the blog, but come on regarding the Bush article. IF he stays healthy, he could have a monster season, or not. First of all, the IF he stays healthy is part of the concern people have about him running between the tackles. Three years ago, he was supposed to be the greatest RB ever. Has he had an impact, yes, but has really lived up to even half the hype about him? No way. No one can say Houston made a mistake passing on him.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

No, he hasn't lived up to the hype and nobody's saying Houston made a mistake. My point is, don't label him as the traditional feature back. Let him be himself for a full and healthy season and it might be something special.

Dale (Picayune, Mississippi)

Has Shockey been attending the most recent OTAs?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Yep and he says he'll attend all the rest of the OTAs. That would be smart on his part.

Paul (Tampa)

Pat, Do you know what exactly the "setback" is, in Buc's LB Angelo Crowell's injury recovery? Do you think it'll affect his season? I Really had high hopes for him..Also G Aaron Sears, whats the word on him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Honestly, I don't know what the deal is with Crowell. As far as Sears, it's a personal matter and let's respect that right now. I'm sure he'll address it when the time is right.

Chris (New Orleans)

I believe the move to keep malcom jenkins at corner and move usama behind sharper is a good move. but i keep hearing malcom jenkins should be the future for the saints at safety. pat i was wondering wat you thought about the situation.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

They want to try Jenkins at CB first because shutdown CBs don't come along often. If he turns out to be one, great. If not, they can always move him to FS down the road.

Paul (Tampa)

Pat, Will we see Tiger Woods on the sideline anymore, or was that just because he's friends with Gruden?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

Think that was just a Gruden thing.

Amit bajaj (clinton mississippi)

what are the chances that the saints pursue a trade with the KC chiefs to get glenn dorsey? or what if we moved charles grant to DT? he has been reported to be well over 300 pounds.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

Grant's got an extra four weeks to drop the weight. I haven't heard anything about them being interested in Dorsey.

Jeff (Atlanta)

any word on the chemistry between Ryan and Gonzalez?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

Looked like it was off to a good start when I was there for minicamp. I've talked to people inside building since then and they've said Ryan and Tony G. have built a fast friendship.

Rum (N'awlins/Avondale)

Daryl--thats just the point, folks are focused to much about Reggie running between the tackles--and not what he can do with the ball out in space. 1 move and he can score.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

I'm with you Rum.

Wally (Los Angeles)

You recently alluded to your rankings of the Head coaches in the division. I know you don't want to give too much away before your article, but why would you immediately put Coach Smith at or very near the top and completly disregard Sean Payton who has accomplished much more (NFC Championship game and NFC South Title) I think Smith had a great year, but no more impressive then Payton's first year. No offense but I think you are being way shortsighted, Payton has masterminded the greatest offense in the NFL where are the props.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

I'll be pondering it over the weekend and writing it sometime next week. But right now, I'd say I'm going with Smith or Fox as No. 1, Payton as No. 3 and Morris as No. 4. Agree, Payton's an offensive guru, but he's had two seasons straight where he hasn't made playoffs.

Hodges (Atlanta)

Who is standing out in the Secondary right now for the Falcons?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:37 PM)

Not sure anybody's jumped forward yet. William Moore's still learning the D. They're hoping he steps up in camp.

Jeff (Atlanta)

Is Peria Jerry gonna will be an immediate impact player true/false?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

True. I say he has biggest impact of any rookie in the division.

RAY GORDON REID ( DURHAM NC 277701 )

QUESTION TO PAT YASINSKAS HI PAT WHO WILL GET MICHAEL VICK

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

The United Football League.

vance (salisbury,nC)

Love the new chat features. have you heard the reports about Julius peppers sending one of his teammates a text message saying that he would be at training camp? I read it earlier.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

No, haven't seen it. Shoot an item to my mailbag and let me know where that was reported. Basically, I don't think Pep has much choice.

Big Earl (Baton Rouge)

Saints defense--weakest position group today?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Defensive ends.

Code (Kenner, LA)

Pat, I enjoy reading your blogs. In one you had mentioned that Coach Paytn runs one of the harder training camps you had seen and that could be one of the factors contributing to the level of injuries last year for the Saints. Based on your mini-acmp visit (albeit limited) has your thought on that changed? Also your thoughts on Charles Grant - the man is big but the pictures from mini-camp are non too flaterring. Tahnks.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

Couldn't really tell in a three-day minicamp where they're not wearing pads. It looked to me like a typical minicamp, although defense was very spirited, which is nice. I think pulling camp back home might help a bit. Payton's a smart guy and I think he might have learned from the past. We'll see. As far as Grant, yeah, he didn't look great. But, hey, the suspension does give him four weeks to lose weight.

Joel (PA)

Speaking of that crazy coaching list you had.....Sheesh Smith and Payton were ahead of Fox and Fox is 5-3 in the playoffs while Smith and Payton are a combined 1-1. I dont see the logic. Please explain???

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

To clarify, I haven't run that "crazy" list yet. I said I'm running it next week. Payton will not be ranked ahead of Fox. I can tell you that right now. I may rank Fox first or I may put Smith there. I'm still kicking that around.

Tym (Orlando)

PY, how goes it? Who do you think has a better chance at having a Pro Bowl year: Micheal Money Clayton or Jermaine Phillips?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

Phillips.

JD (Tampa, FL)

Pat, while you were at the Bucs practices, did you happen to see how Roy Miller performed? Can he eat up blockers and get to the QB for us.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

No, honestly didn't. I was out there working on some preview stuff for training camp and didn't really have a chance to focus in on practice very much. I hope to do that Tuesday when I go out there.

Justin (Tampa)

TJ did a whole lot more than Jenkins did last year.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

Yeah, but I'm projecting Jenkins to be a big-time player. Besides, Jenkins is a CB. That carries a lot more weight than a safety in my eyes.

Big Earl to Joel in PA (Baton Rouge)

Pay attention!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

Thank you.

Clay (Charlotte)

Have you heard anything on Utoh? Do you think he is going to be worth the trade last year in the long run?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

I think Otah was well worth the trade. He's a stud as a run blocker and a big part of the reason they were 12-4.

Amit (mississippi)

Pat, i respectfully disagree with your assessment that DE is our weakest position group. sure grant and smith will be suspended, but we have mccray, spicer, charleston, and hargrove, all of whom have started at one point in their careers and have performed well. my areas of concern are WLB and DT. kendrick clancy is solid, but we have mediocre depth behind him and sedrick ellis. scott shanle leaves something to be desired. i think we are ok at DE

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

I think you're ok at DE, but not good. I mean, you have a bunch of guys. But is any one of them really dominant?

Tanard Jackson (Tampa)

You may have made a mistake in your list. Just admit it.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

You've got your opinions and I've got mine.

Wes (Atlanta)

Vick will count 8 million against the cap, is that more or less than he would have if they hadn't cut him, and does that give them any leeway to sign a vet DT, safety and/or RT after summer cuts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

Think the actual figure is right around $7 million.

Daryl (Springfield, NJ)

Bush's yard per touch speak for themselves. 3.7 rushing and 7.5 receiving. Staying healthy shouldn't change those much. Those numbers are disappointing for a RB or a WR or anything in between. Sure Bush is a threat, but so are a lot of players or they wouldn't be on the field. If he was really a special threat, his homeruns would bump those average up considerably.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

Valid points. But don't overlook his punt returns.

ben (tampa)

pat regarding freeman and the bucs, im holding out for freeman hoping he becomes a great player. If you were HC who would you start, and do you think the bucs finally have that elusive franchise QB

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:51 PM)

Start McCown and let Freeman sit a bit. If they struggle, go to Freeman around midseason. If they win with McCown, great and let Freeman take over next year.

David (Albuquerque)

Hi Pat. Speaking of the late-great Sam Mills, I noticed recently that the Saints planned to honor him in the Superdome during the 2005 season but had to cancel due to Katrina. Why have they not yet taken steps to finally do that? Carolina has already honored him, so New Orleans needs to do the same. It seems like they've forgotten. Any info on this?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

Very good point. Actually, I think Sam's already in Saints Hall of Fame. It's the Louisiana Hall of Fame he's not in yet. They were supposed to put a banner up in the dome, but the hurricane got in the way. I'll check into it and write something on it to perhaps remind some folks about it.

Chris (New Orleans)

wait. so your saying the SAFETY position looks better than the DE's for the saints

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

Yeah, I am. I think Sharper can give them one good year. And I think Harper is better than people give him credit for. He's a strong safety, but got hung out to dry in deep coverage too much last year. With good CBs, I think Harper can be good at his job. Couple more questions before I have to run.

Jamar (Palm Beach)

Pat do you think we could possibly see the old cadillac come this regular season? or do you think the knee injuries are too hard to over come?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

Don't get your hopes up on that one. If he does come back all the way, it's icing on the cake. But that's a lot to expect.

JD (Tampa, FL)

Speaking of holes in defenses, the Bucs Nickel-Back position looks pretty glaring. Any insight as to what they are doing?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Elbert Mack.

gordon (new orleans)

When do NFL coaches tend to take their vacations, the calendar year seems so jammed.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:58 PM)

Good question. I'll use John Fox as an example, since I know his schedule best. As soon as the Panthers finish workouts next week, he'll take off. He usually heads down to his house in Florida for four weeks and makes a few side trips. Then, he'll come back a couple weeks before camp and get back at it. But, I'm sure he's never able to turn his cell phone off while he's off.

Rockette Scientist (New Orleans, LA)

I happened to visit New Orleans' minicamp, and according to my calculations, the New Orleans Saints look playoff bound.

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:01 PM)

They did look good. But everybody looks good this time of year. Don't read too much into minicamps. As an NFC South player recently said, they're "fake football". The real stuff starts in training camp. All right, I've got to run. Thanks for stopping by. I'll be on ESPN News in about 5 minutes to talk about Vick. Thanks everyone. Have a great weekend.
