Hello all. A wet Wednesday in the Queen City of Charlotte. Just got back from a tour of Joe Gibbs Racing with a mission group visiting from Rwanda. A pretty cool trip. Now I'm ready for a cool ride with you guys. Fire away.
Here is a thought for a schedule change. Make one weekend, say the second Pocono race, a wildcard weekend where they would go to a different track that date each year. Say Kentucky one year, Iowa the next, maybe Rockingham once again. That way NASCAR gets exposure on other tracks without commiting full time to a certain facility.
I like that idea, but I doubt the tracks would go for it. They put a lot of money into upgrading for a Sprint Cup event and to have one say every third or fourth year probably wouldn't pay the bills. Most tracks will argue they need to events to prosper. I'd love to see a rotating track, though. Like the idea of keeping Rockingham on the schedule.
which driver is the biggest dissapoinment this year? What about surprise?
The biggest disappointment could go to several drivers. There's Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has no excuse for not making the Chase. He's buried in 18th. Then there's Kevin Harvick, a Chase regular, who is further back than Junior. And then there's David Ragan, who many picked to make the Chase after finishing 13th a year ago. He's 31st or somewhere around there. An awful year for him. As for biggest surprise you'd have to go with David Reutimann or Marcos Ambrose.
How will Carpentier do in the #55 this week ? I'm expecting a good run from him...
He'd better do well. Michael Waltrip has a decent record at road course and he wouldn't give up his ride if he didn't expect an improvement.
Do you think Harvick will be up front this week?
He's one of the top six or so road course drivers who drive fulltime in Cup, so if he's going to rebound this would be a great place.
Do you think TNT is worse than Fox like I do? I mean the broadcast consisted of 5 green flag laps, commercial break, another 5 laps, commercial break, another 5 laps, miss green flag stops while under another commercial break, five more laps, then another commercial break then a caution, another commercial break, then missing pit stops under caution. Plus I felt like I was standing quietly and staring through a tiny crack in the door listening to the commentators have a conversation. Your thoughts......
It wouldn't really be fair for me to comment on another network since ESPN will take over here soon. But I will say I prefer Kyle Busch over Digger. How's that?
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.15M HI DAVID WHO YOUR PICK FOR SONOMA SUNDAY
I like the best two road course drivers who are fulltime Cup drivers. That would be Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart if there is any doubt.
Hey David, I hope I am not to early!
So what is your question, Matt? No, you will not win at Sonoma.
Are the Roush teams finally turning the corner? Which one is on the way out?
Yes, they're getting their mojo back. Biffle easily could have won last week and Edwards had the fastest car the week before. As far as on the way out, I'll stick behind Jamie McMurray.
I love watching your chats, all of my friends in NY make fun of me because i watch NASCAR. They call it driving around in circles, I like the wrecks. Whats your favorite part about the sport? <3
Thanks on the chats. They're fun. More fun than some of the races ... ie Pocono. My favorite part indirectly has to do with the wrecks. I love watching the crews fix a car in the garage to get it back on the track. It's amazing how they all pull together.
David,What is up at RPM Ive read rumors that Sorenson might lose his ride in August and AJ is wanting to look for another ride. Also Fox sports said RPM is expected to regroup under Toyota with Kahne by the end of the summer and add more RPM drivers in 2010.Have you heard any of this, what is nonsense and what is possibly real. What is going on?
eautfiul I've heard all of it, Marion (Marion, S.C., is a beautiful town by tye way. My dad was the minister in Mullins for a while. Back to RPM, the move to Toyota appears in the works. As for Sorenson and AJ, that's still speculation. I doubt they'd park the 43, so if there is a change somebody else would go in that car. Maybe AJ.
Will there be any famous people on here today?
How are the ratings for TNT compared to Fox. It would seem to me NASCAR should be in talks with ESPN to see if more can be moved to ABC, because many viewers do not have cable, and with viewership down they need to do as much as they can to get as many viewers as possible. But then again Neilson Ratings are faulty anyways
I don't pay that close attention to the ratings. As for how it's divided, the season is so long and no network wants the entire season because of overlap. Fox has the NFL in the fall. ESPN has the NBA and other sports in the spring. TNT has "Diehard" reruns.
hey dave i was wondering how do you think jr will perform at sonoma this weekend.... were do you think he wil finish 09 in the points... and dont you think he has a shot at 2 wins with talladega and daytona still on the schedule
He'll be average at Sonoma. He'll be 16-20 range in '09 and I don't see him winning two races. He needs to get a couple of top fives first.
With all the uncertainty at RPM do you think Kahne will stay like he says or will he elect to leave.
He has another year left on his contract, so unless he finds some out he'll be there at least through 2010.
Hello David. With 8th to 14th place in the points separated by only 101 points, what do you think are the odds Kyle Busch could not make the Chase?
It would be crazy to suggest, but he's been so up and down it's not out of the realm of possibility. I'd say it's highly unlikely, and if it happens then NASCAR needs to make a provision that you have to win at least one race to make the Chase. To have somebody with three wins, and I bet he wins another two before we reach Richmond, would be criminal. It's happened before, though. Jeff Gordon won two I believe in 2005 when he and Junior missed the Chase.
When will Roush get his next win? (Infienion,Loudon,Daytona,Chicagoland)
I'd pick Loudon among those.
I'm starting to hate Joey Logano's fans too, FYI. All 7 of them. And I also like Lowe's better than Home Depot and never visit a Game Stop to buy my video games. As a matter of fact, I go to walmart for those. Just letting you and everyone else know.
Never thought I'd see a KB wannabe. Go smash a guitar.
David, is Kasey Kahne gearing up for a move to Stewart Haas? He reportedly wants out of his deal with RPM and would seem to fit in well at SHR, as Tony and Ryan are both former open-wheel drivers themselves.
Haven't heard anything to make me believe RPM will let him out of that last year.
David, last year at Infineon we finished 8th can we compete well this week?
Altready told you no wins. You should have picked Gordon or Stewart as a name if you expected to win.
Who do you think the odd person out will be at Roush Fenway Racing at the end of this year? Thanks
For the 1,000th time. McMurray.
do you think whit the race scott speed can get a top ten he is a good road course driver
I am skeptical. He's not that good of a road racer.
David, is there another crop of road racing specialists that will come to NASCAR? Said, Pruett, and Fellows are all getting into their mid and late 40s. Who could be on the horizon?
None of that caliber. Something I really haven't given much thought, though. Have you heard of somebody?
Whats up with NASCAR and Mayfield? they are acting like this is a sloppy divorce, I'm sick of hearing about it. Mayfield needs some rehab and a glass of "shut the hell up"
This could be a long, drawn out process. Both sides are sticking to their story. Get used to it for a while.
Any rumors about changes to the COT? Is it NASCAR trying to make Junior more competitive?
They're going to look at minor tweaks, probably during the offseason, to create more downforce. Nothing major, though. And no, this will not be a Junior rule.
Yo this is ironic same name same city... however u probably make more money!
Nah, you probably are a banker and make two times what I make.
Which driver is the easiest to get a quick interview with and which driver is the hardest? Thanks
Can't say who is the quickets. Among the best are Jeff Burton and Jeff Gordon. Hardest? Does Kyle Busch after a tough loss count?
Since Scott Riggs left for all the right reason, do you see him signing with a team for next year in sprint cup?
I talked to Scott yesterday. He's still looking. It's just a tough economy out there, but you have to admire him for having the guts to leave a start and park situation. Out of sight often means out of mind. He ran that risk by leaving.
Which road ringer's going to have the greatest shot at a victory?
Is Boris Said in this one? I honestly did not check the entry list. But if you look at history road ringers haven't won. They sometimes get a better finish than the regular driver may hve gotten, but a trip to Victory Lane isn't likely.
To suggest SHR and Hendrick are a six-car operation isn't fair, Grubb added."I fully disagree with it," he said. "If they come over here and see the 150 people we have working here ? that paycheck doesn't come from Hendrick Motorsports. We don't have anybody over there that we pay from the Stewart-Haas payroll, either."Everything we do as a race team is all here. We just receive the bare chassis and engines from Hendrick Motorsports. ? We are a very strong stand-alone organizationSay what? How can Darian Grubb make this statement when at Pocano when Tony wrecked crew members from the 24 and the 48 helped them get their backup car prepped and ready for the race? The 14 and 39 are running "Hendrick" cars and I mean "Hendrick" cars every week!
The point was this is the way it's always been between Hendrick and Stewart-Haas, or Haas CNC. They aren't doing anything special with the new owner. The drivers are the difference. If being in a Hendrick car was the only recipe for success then Junior would be in the top 12.
David, any news on who will partner with DeWalt on the 17 with Kenseth?
Not yet. They've got a few irons in the fire, though.
You mean im not racing this week?
No, but your car has a good shot at a top 10.
What do you think of Elliott Sadler's run this past weekend? Are they finally getting their cars right at RPM?
He did have a good run. Some might put that under the category of a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then. I want to see him do that several races in a row before proclaiming this a turnaround.
What information can you give us about Miss Sprint Cup Anne-Marie?
She's a very nice woman. The rest you can see for yourself.
I think we do a fine job on TNT!
Glad you think so.
Jamie McMurray has gone from 28th to 19th in the last 6 races. is there enough time for him to still make the chase? the guy is a talented driver, but his luck stinks!
Jamie always seems to make a run and fall just short before the Chase. Why should this be any different? He has great equipment and a great crew. He never should have been that far back.
Scott Riggs in a ride for 2010? Your thoughts?
Nothing yet as I said before, but I'd take him over some guys in the series now.
How do you think Jimmy Johnson would do in David Gilliland's equipment and vise versa?
Interesting question. I'd like to find out. I imagine he would do better than Gilliland, but likely not as good as he's doing with Hendrick. As for Gilliland, you'd think he would improve, but everyone thought Earnhardt Jr. would as well.
With Roush having to contract, with one team most likely headed to Yates, is that the only change coming? Should david Ragan be worried about losing his ride given his performance?
I wouldn't think so. They were high on David before the season. They can't overreact to a slow start.
I hope tony stewart fails in the chase and him and newman finish 11th and 12th in the points. Kurt Busch the champ.
That's harsh. I'm sure Busch likes your thoughts though.
david whats up with this Kahne might be in a toyota by summers end? whats goin on at rpm?
I can't see a switch in midseason, but Kahne will be in a Toyota for a few Nationwide races with Braun Racing.
Well when will i be back on top?
When you change your name to Johnson.
Which Stewart-Haas car do you feel has the best chance at winning the championship: the 14 or the 39?
Stewart has a couple of titles, so it would be hard to pick Newman over him. But Newman has a good history on many of the Chase tracks so you never know.
What is the best finish of 2009 in each series so far this year in your opinion? I was thinking the two talladega races for NNS and NSCS, for the truck i'm kind of thrown for a loop, maybe martinsville?
Talladega for Cup. Richmond for Nationwide. Truck I'm not so sure. Haven't seen all of them.
i think jr and lance are doing good with each other just wish the fans would give them time what do u think
They do need time. Whether Lance is the solution there I'm not willing to say just yet.
Hey David, what was the details you could not share last week about RPM?
Good memory. I'm still waiting for a reply. Thought I would have one by now, but a lot is going on with Chrysler.
David, one other question why is Yates still not running more consistent with the Roush cars, is it b/c they are still a rebuilding organization?
I'd say the bottom line is talent behind the wheel. Nothing against Menard and Labonte, but one never has performed and the other hasn't in quite a few years.
Who's the bigger choke artist, me or Dale JR?
You at least made it to the Super Bowl, Jake. And having covered you for several years you have more wins than Junior. So you tell me.
The 48 team has gotten dinged for running out of fuel the last 2 weeks. Actually I think they are showing remarkable strength. Wtih the exception of Charlotte (when they were in the top 3 until the rain) and Talledaga (which is always a wild card) they finished in the top ten at all chase tracks, top 5 if you exclude Fontana, and certainly they had the best car at its sister track. With the format the way it is they had nothing to lose and only lost 20 points over the 13th place car after Michigan. While they are not getting the wins in some ways this may be their strongest year yet. Does everyone just take them for granted or is the 48 team being overlooked this year (not by you since you picked them to go 4 in a row)?
I'm not overlooking them. I said in Monday's rundown that Jimmie still had the team to beat. Nothing has changed since then to change my mind.
How will the GM pullout of funding for the Nationwide and Camping World Truck series affect the sport?
The Nationwide Series should be fine. They can adjust the budgets and do well as long as they have technical support. The Truck Series may be in trouble. If the defending champion can't get enough money to run a race as was the case last weekend, then there are serious problems.
Who's gonna drive the 3rd car at Stewart-Haas next year? My guess: Kasey Kahne
Tony hasn't said he'll go to three yet. Again, Kasey has a contract through 2010 at RPM. A lot of things have to happen to make that work.
While those guitars are made tough, I bet Tony would have broken it, I just have no upper body strength.
So what was Tony going to do, sit on it?
Have you heard any talk about NASCAR's motion in the Mayfield case? If NASCAR is correct about the guy's lack of qualifications, most, if not all, of Mayfield's suit could be dismissed.
There'll be a lot of arguing before we get to that point. Mayfield's attorneys insist their guy is legit. Quite the little soap opera.
Who is ESPN going to create to be my rival? You know I'm copyrighted huh? Can't touch this....
We're coming up with something called Buckshot. Anytime Digger makes an appearance we shower him with Buckshot.
There's been speculation Red Bull could move over to Chevrolet? Have you heard anything about this by chance?
Nothing more than the speculation thus far. There are sound reasons to think it could happen. There also are sound reasons to say it won't.
Do you honestly think Kahne will stick with his guns and hold out another season with RPM? Shouldn't he want to start looking elsewhere? It just seems as though RPM is too disorganized and that is hurting their performances on the track each Sunday.
He made a deal. He may not have a choice but to stick with it.
David, Is the plan to have Kahne running Toyota this year while the others run Dodge? If so i think it will be Daytona thats when Kahne drive the Braun car
No, that won't happen. You can't run two manufacturers out of one garage in the Cup series.
Hey David, I know you get tired of it, but what's the % on Danica jumping ship?
I'll go with 10. I don't see it happening. She's just using NASCAR to make more money in IRL in my humble opinion.
Hey David, what is with the hostility that is often directed towards foreign carmakers and drivers? Why do you think it is so hard for the NASCAR faithful to accept them?
Because NASCAR was born on the U.S., Detroit-bsaed manufacturers purest just can't handle the fact that a so-called outsider can come in and be successful. Mostly it's just pure American pride.
This Jeremy Mayfield vs Nascar Circus get crazier by the day. You have to have some guts to stand up in court and lie about your credentials. How long do you think this drags out and what do you see the outcome being?
I see this dragging on for months, maybe longer if more lawsuits are filed. As for the outcome, I'd rather not judge one way or the other.
Who's your pick for the chase?
If rpm goes to toyota do you think that will benefit kahne and might show him reason to stay with the team past 2010
That would be a good reason to make the switch. Something has to be done to keep him. Without him they have little left.
Hey David, Do you think that double file will cause more wrecks this week since it is a road course? If you pick Gordon or Stewart to win, where do you see JPM finishing?
Jeff Gordon said there will be havoc. I think it'll be cool to watch. JPM should be a contender. He has been on road courses since coming to Cup.
How much more sharing of information between Hendrick and Stewart-Hass do you think will continue the closer we get to the chase?
It'll be just like the 24-48 shop in the Chase. Nothing changed there and I suspect nothing will change here.
Are you among those that feel Truex to MWR is a foregone conclusion? If so, is he sloted for the 55 or a 4th car?
I am one of those. And he'll replace Waltrip. It's just undetermined whether Waltrip will keep the 55 and drive on a part-time basis with Truex in another number or Truex will get the 55. But trues definitely will get the No. 55 team if and when it happens.
Who is your favorite co-worker? If I worked at ESPN, it would have to be Rusty, I tell ya what.
I'd go with Marty or Angelique. They're in the garage with me and I see how hard they work every weekend.
would any top cup teams take a chacne with Danica?
Heck yeah they'd take a chance, and then smile collecting all the sponsor dollars.
You never answer my questions...must be because Im a Junior fan!
Sorry I missed your question. I missed al ot. You guys were great, though. Maybe when I get an extra set of hands I'll be able to answer more in an hour. I do my best. Until next week, have a great weekend.
