Hello, thanks for checking in. Now that we've dried out from Bethpage, plenty to talk about regarding the Open or anything else on your mind in the golf world. Please fire away with your questions.
Will the US Open come back to Bethpage? If not, will the PGA then come in? I have to feel that the venue offers a lot of financial benefit.
Chuck, hard to say. The USGA loves the New York area for obvious reasons. And the Open is spoken for through 2016. It's possible they go back to Bethpage in 2017, but what about Winged Foot and Shinnecock? If not the Open, perhaps the PGA Championship looks at the venue. There are lots of plusses to the venue, despite the bad weather last week.
Why does the 2014 PGA Championship not have a venue picked out yet? I read somewhere that Oak Tree in Ok. was hoping to land it. Any truth to this?
Sean, not sure why it has not been decided yet. It is possible that Oak Tree is in the running, although if I have a vote, I'd pick a California venue for cooler temperatures and less chance of rain!
Two part question. When did fans screaming "get in the hole" become popular at every golfing event? The second I hear it on a par 4 or 5 drive I instantly hit the mute button. Is there any way it could be outlawed?
Paul, I can't pin down the timeframe, but it seemed to follow "You da man!" I wish it could be outlawed. There should be no restraint of enthusiasm, but that phrase has become tired. Get creative people!
I have heard media types say that Glover could be the next one hit wonder like Shaun Micheel, Ben Curtis, Michael Campbell, and Todd Hamilton. I think it is unfair to lump Curtis in that group. He has won Twice since then, Had a few top tens in the British Open and a runner up at the PGA, and made a Ryder Cup. What are your thoughts?
Matt, your take on Curtis is a good one. He has won twice since winning the British Open and proven himself not to be a one-hit wonder. As for Glover, it remains to be seen whether he builds on the U.S. Open.
If Phil Mickelson's career ended today, would his legacy be defined by failure, success, or both?
Probably both, although I would tend to put more weight on the success. Phil has won three majors, 36 tour events. It's an incredible career, and most of this was accomplished during the Tiger Woods era. He's been on every Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup team since the mid-1990s. Yes, he's had his shortcomings, especially at the U.S. Open. He'll be remembered for that, too. But the positives far outweigh the negatives.
I think NBC's golf coverage is excellent (especially Dan Hicks and Gary Koch). Being in the media and a golf fan do you prefer NBC or CBS?
Brian, I hate to be wishy-washy, but I couldn't pick against either. They both have their strong points and having more than one is good for golf fans.
Will the US Open not come back to Bethpage because of the weather problems?
Bill, I doubt that would be the reason if they choose to not go back. They know that weather can't be controled, that things happen. They look more at the golf course, the logistics, etc. -- although it is interesting that it has rained each of the last three times the Open has gone to Long Island.
If Phil had the option of winning a US Open and never winning anything else again, or winning say 20 more times, 2-3 more majors but no US Open, what would he take at this point in his career?
Brian, my guess is Phil would take a U.S. Open and nothing else at this point. But given the choice of 20 wins and two to three other majors but no U.S. Open, he no doubt takes the latter. . . I'm sure Phil wants to win the U.S. Open and a bunch more times, too.
Even though Bethpage did not play as difficult as projected, considering the weather conditions, the start and stops, how did this rank as an endurance test? Should Glover feel a little extra pride for having survived to grind out the win?
Ed, there is no doubt that Glover should feel good about his accomplishment. That golf course was playing far from easy on Monday, and all of the other obstacles probably made up for the fact that the course was weakened by the rain. That was a long week. A win is a win at the U.S. Open.
If you had to guess when we see Phil again when would you say? Firestone?
I think Firestone for the Bridgestone Invitational is an excellent guess. Phil said last week that he's looking at August -- at the earliest -- for his comeback. If he does come back, that gives him a tournament with no cut to work out the kinks before the PGA. Then again, don't be surprised if he doesn't come back at all this year. He might just figure it's not worth the hassle while he spends time with his wife through cancer treatments.
With all the weather we had this week and for a while talk of a Tuesday or even Wednesday finish, what would the USGA have done had this happened 5 years from now in Pinehurst with the women scheduled to play the following week? They would have lost a practice round on Monday this week, had it gone longer i can't imagine they would have been allowed to practice on the course while a playoff or 4th round was going on. Not to mention i assume the greens and course are pretty beat up from the play and weather. Plus someone from the USGA saying "Excuse me Ms. Ochoa, do you mind if Phil and Tiger play through, they have a little match going on here?" would be awkward.
Scott, that is the big issue with what is going to be going on in 2014. It's bad enough they don't get the course on Monday, but what if there is a further delay or significant damage to the course? That is the potential pitfall, although I'm guessing the LPGA believes that is worth the potential gains from such a situation.
I noticed, from skipping work all weak, that Phil seems to have gotten longer. Is it my imagination or is he actually longer than Tiger right now? I saw him hit 8 iron into #3 in rd 3 (whatever day that was) when no one else hit less thatn 6. Also he got to 13 in 2 later in that round when the hole was playing from the back tees.
Brian, I am not sure if Phil is longer. He definitely hits it a long way, a big part of his game. And there is no doubt that Tiger is not quite as long these days due either to reigning in his swing or simply not getting everything back from after knee surgery. He has said as much.
Does David Duval have a chance to make the Ryder Cup this year?
As a golf fan on the East Coast, I LOVE the idea of the Open on the West Coast! Having Prime Time golf on the East Coast can only help the game and viewership, right?
Does the success at Bethpage help the NY area in getting more PGA and LPGA events?
Maybe the US open should considering moving back their start date a few weeks. If this were being played in July, I'm sure rain would not have been an issue and much more enjoyable to watch. This weather problem has been an issue at Bethpage the last two times.
Do you think Glover will ever win again or is he a one-hit wonder? Personally, I think he's the next Michael Campbell and Todd Hamilton
Think Tiger can build on his US Open performance to help him in the British Open?
With Phil out of the British Open, where does the pre-tournament hype machine go - Greg Norman, Sergio??
Do you have any insight or comments as to the poor behavior from some of the fans at the Open?
I'm not familiar with Turnberry. How will it play and whose strengths will it play to?
bob, What 3 players do you think would have benefited most from Tiger Woods not being around. I think its Els, Mickelson and Vijay. What do you think. Also, sad sad news about Chris Smith wife and family....
Last year the field for Tigers event was much weaker than in year one. What was the reason for this, and will it improve going forward?
Any comments on the finalists' chances of Big Break on Golf HD?
Who are the front runners to win the British Open?
Tiger seems to feel his way around the course in the first round of tournaments. This may have cost him in the Open. Why doesn't he attack on Day 1 and try to put his name at the top of the leaderboard? I know that you can't win on Thursday, but seeing "Tiger" at the top of the leaderboard may have a demoralizing effect on some of the other players. Agree?
Looks like we're out of questions. . . thanks for participating and we'll be back again next week. Enjoy.
