Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Greetings, Fight Freaks. I'm here in Atlantic City for tomorrow's Latin Fury card with JM Lopez-Lontchi. Should be a good little show. And we also have the Ortiz-Maidana fight on HBO and the Abraham-Oral fight on Showtime, plus Friday Night Fights this weekend. And Mayweather-Marquez has been rescheduled for Sept. 19, so let's get to it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

And don't forget -- the new big notebook is up, the schedule is updated and there is a new blog today.

mike costa rica [via mobile]

what time is the weign in in ac?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

It's at 4 pm in Bally's AC, down the hall from the media room I am doing this chat in.

Rags19 (NYC)

Dan: Without Sentana's bankroll, is there any reason for Vitali (or Wladimir) to fight Haye? If he can't get (a) Klitschko in the ring, who is on Haye's radar for a fall bout?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

One of them probably will fight Haye at some point because he is a good name and there is interest in the fight. HBO wants it. And even with Setanta out of business, you have to figure Sky in the UK would put up money for it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

By the way, Bob Arum is in here so he's open to a few questions if you want.

Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)

RIP Michael Jackson

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Don't think he was a fight fan, but agreed. Listened to some of his tunes on the drive up to AC.

Brian (NYC)

What chance do you give Williams vs. Clottey of happening? I think that'd be a great fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

I know Clottey is one of a couple of names HBO will approve for HBO and I'm sure Clottey and his team would take it but I think Williams is looking for something bigger. But it could happen.

Rick (Marina)

Whats up Dan, I see its finally official the rescheduling of May-Mar, any new news on the possible undercard of Valero and Casamayor?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Just one of a bunch of undercard bouts that I am sure will be discussed. But nothing is official yet for the undercard. Incidentally, HBO will still have 24/7 for the fight. The debut episode is now scheduled foor Aug. 29.

Jonathan ((Northern VA))

Dan, from talking with Ortiz, will he struggle with the pressure of being the next GBP star? It seems like the pressure would be brutal.

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

You're right, it can be harsh. But Victor seems to have a good attitude about it. He's a mature guy for being only 22.n So you hope he can deal with it.

Jonathan ((Northern VA))

Does Bob have any plans to slow down soon? Who is going to be the next big star for Top Rank?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Bob says Juan Manuel Lopez is his pick of the young champions. He is also high on Korobov. He says "Tell them we have all the fighters and but the other company (Golden Boy) has all the TV dates." Bob's in one of those moods!

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, will HBO only show one fight tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Yes, one fight, Ortiz-Maidana/

Gehrig (Englewood, CO)

Can you set us straight on the Vitali-Valuev potential clash? One side says they are in negotiations, the other side said there is no interest in making that fight for 2009, but maybe sometime in '10. What's the deal?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

There is no deal and the reports are nonsense. Please read today's blog for full details.

Iron Beach (cape canaveral, fl.)

Mr. Arum if PBF wins vs JMM, is it possible for you to work with his people for a match with Pac- Cotto winner? Or does he price himself out of that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Bob says that is completely up to Mayweather. If Mayweather is realistic the fight will happen. But Pacquiao has a tougher task with Cotto than Maywetaher does with Marquez when Pacquiao fights Cotto in November. There you have it from the horse's mouth.

Pedro (Puerto Rico)

Are there any other young stars from Puerto Rico that Top Rank is looking to develop other than Juanma?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

Bob says lightweight Hector Marango is someone to watch. He is on the undercard tomorrow. Bob loves this. He says Top Rank has three desks. He is in charge of the Filipino desk. Carl Moretti is in charge of the Puerto Rican desk and Todd duBoef heads up the Mexican desk.

Jr (San Jose, Ca)

Do titles even matter anymore? With so many belts out there I could care less if the fight is for a title as long as we can get the 2 best fighters in the ring.

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Bless you, Freak.

Zim (Boston)

Interesting that three desks are all in other countries. What type of effort does Bob put into scouting in the States?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Bob says everyone in the company looks out for the young fighters in the US. Bob's matchmakers, Bruce Trampler and Brad "Abdul" Goodman are constantly on the lookout for talent.

ChrisDiggidy (Oklahoma City)

Can you ask Bob, how can I apply for a job with Top Rank? :)

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

He says first you need to speak the Filipino dialect tagalog.

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

He says first you need to speak the Filipino dialect tagalog.

Antonio (Orlando)

Who's Mr. Arum favorite fighter all-time?

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

Easy question: He says Muhammad Ali. He promoted 25 of his fights.

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

Can you ask Bob if Cotto's WBO title will be on the line if he fights Pacquiao and is that something (Pacquiao going for an historic world title in a seventh weight class) that will be highlighted in the promotion of the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Bob says absolutely yes.

cdiddy2310 (stillwater,ok)

What chance do you give Lontchi to pull an upset tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

You never know. He's a good boxer and he can move. But I don't give him much of a chance.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Dan, can you ask Bob if it concerns him when he matches two of his superstars due to the fact that one could destroy the reputation of the other if they get annihilated in the ring.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

He says no because he has confidence in each of the superstars and even though one of them might lose a fight, he will give a good account of himself and remain and attraction to fight another day.

Miguel (Sterling, VA)

When can we expect to hear of a finalized deal with cotto-pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Bob says hopefully within a week and that they are very, very close. The only thing holding it up is that Pacquiao adviser Mike Koncz has to return to the Philippines on Sunday to bring Manny the offer.

Steve (NYC)

Ask Bob if he thinks Floyd really had a rib injury??

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

He says, "Who am I to dispute a fighter claiming to be injured."

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Can you ask Mr. Arum what the weather is like in Macau and how Kelly Pavlik's staph infection healed so fast? Just kidding, the freaks love Mr. Arum!

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

I read that one to Bob and he is cracking up.

jack (fort collins)

another question for mr arum: are you still going to try to make a fight with margarito this year or are you going to wait until the csac lifts his ban?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

He says he is optimistic that Margarito will have his license restored before the end of the year and that at that time he will see to it that Margarito fights.

Taylor (NC)

Can you ask arum if he still has interest in cotto-margarito 2

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

Bob says absolutely, wether Cotto wins or loses against Manny, he wants to fight Margarito again to prove that he is the better man.

Erik (Austin, TX)

Hey Dan...I know the subject is touchy at best, but is Bob looking at trying to get Margarito a fight in Mexico?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

He says only when his license is restored in California. Antonio would like to fight in Mexico and once the California license is restored he would like to do a fight him in Mexico.

Jimmy (Arlington, Va)

Who does Bob think is the all time greatest trainer?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

He says, "I would have to say Eddie Futch."

Matt (Philly)

Please ask Bob when Sugar Shane gets a chance at Manny or a rematch with Cotto??

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Bob says after Manny and Miguel fight each other, Mosley would be in the prime position to fight either guy if Floyd balked at fighting the winner of the Pacquiao-Cotto fight.

Andrew (Austin, Tx)

This question is for Bob, What the latest with Edwin Valero, Is he going to be licensed in Nevada?

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

He says the Nevada legislature had adopted a new rule that would not disqualify a fighter who had a previous brain bleed. They'll license a fighter on a case by case basis. The Nevada commission will vote on that rule change late July and he is optimistic that they will approve that change. Once they do that, Valero, as is the case with any other fighter, will apply for a license, have an MRI and Top Rank anticipates he will pass the medical scrutiny and will then get his Nevada license.

Jason (Tucson, AZ)

D-Nice, I'll be attending Friday Night Fights tonight (my first live fight)...How do you rate "The Golden Child" Danny Jacobs as a middleweight prospect

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

I think Jacobs is one of the best prospect around. He's exciting and had a very good amateur background. He is on the fast track. I would expect to see him on HBO before the end of the year if he wins Friday.

Charles (Philly)

Will I get banned for asking whom Bob likes in the Ortiz-Maidana fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

Not at all. He says it is a very good fight but that Ortiz is too fast for Maidana and will win the fight. I happen to agree with Bob.

Michael Ivan ((Puerto Rico))

Dan, are you still high on Joel Julio? You always say the same thing when his name comes up, but i think it's pretty clear that he will never live up to the expectations put on him such as when you named him prospect of the year. Would his career have been any different had he not fought Carlo Quintana so early on in his development?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Hey, I'll always have a soft spot for him, what can I say. He probably won't live up to the expectations but he's still exciting to watch and he's a nice kid. I don't think the Quintana fight had a long-range impact on his career.

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

Canadian promoter Yvon Michel, who promotes Lontchi, has entered the room.

Chace (Los Angeles)

why don't a lot of writers even mention Paul William in the P4P King debate?

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

Only because he doesn't quite have the resume yet. But he certainly has the potential.

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

By the way, Arum says he will probably take Pavlik's next fight here on Oct. 3 in AC. He is talking to Ken Condon of Bally's about it right now. They're going over ticket prices.

Jake (Rockville, MD)

D-Sizzle, what is your's and Bob's favorite MJ song of all time?

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

He says he is a Beatles fan. I am partial to Billie Jean.

R! (Yay Area)

Who will be Pavlik's opponent on 10/3?

Dan Rafael
  (3:18 PM)

He says maybe Sturm, maybe Froch. He says they are working it out. Doesn't look like Mora, he said.

David ( New Jersey)

De la Hoya vs Arguello at 140. Who wins this battle of the nice guys?

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

Bob says Alexis "has his way with Oscar. The truth is they don't belong in the same ring. Arguello was a great fighter. De La Hoya a very good one."

Mike (Los Angeles)

Hi Dan, can you ask Bob WHEN will he throw JCC Jr in a serious fight? I am a fan, but lets see what he is made of already.

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

Bob says Julio is in a tough fight July 25. If he wins that fight he wants to put him with a name middleweight. Now that Top Rank has Julio with a strength and conditioning coach, they will see a much more fit Julio who can deal with any junior middleweight or middleweight.

Jonathan ((Northern VA))

Will you ask Mr. Arum if he is lining up anything for Demetrius Hopkins? Also, is it awkward to promote a rival promoters nephew?

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

FYI -- Demetrius fights on tomorrow's undercard.

Jorge Az [via mobile]

Hey Dan ask Bob who wins Pacquiao or Duran- both in their prime.

Dan Rafael
  (3:24 PM)

Bob is shaking his head. He says tough, tough call. It would probably have been one of the greatest fights of all time. He is shaking his head and really thinking about it.

Carlos (DC)

Ask Bob if he is telling the truth now to all these questions or will be tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 PM)

Bob is laughing.

Matt (Philly)

Manny would never say "no mas" though

Newt (Jacksonville)

Pacquiao-Duran? Bob could have charged whatever he liked. I'd pay most anything for that fight.

Lawsun (Ft. Lauderdale)

Are rumors that Pacquiao-Cotto may take place at MSG true?

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

No, if it happens, it will be at the MGM Grand.

Ali ((UK))

Could you ask Mr Arum when the fans will get to see Abraham vs Pavlik ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

He says, "Definitely next year. Not this year because Abraham has some Mickey Mouse mandatory."

Teamorosa (Sacramento)

Hey Dan I was reading your blog where you said Cotto vs Clottey tied for highest HBO ratings. I tried looking all over the internet for numbers but could not find any. Can you tell me the highest ratings so far for 2009 and the number of viewers? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 PM)

My understanding is that Mosley-Cheato, Marquez-Diaz and Cotto-Clottey were all in a virtual tie. As for actual number of viewers, I do not know.

Pete (SLC)

You mean like the mickey mouse mandatory Pavlik fought earlier this year?

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 PM)

Bob says, "Point well taken. Most of these mandatories are Mickey Mouse and remember, Pavlik was coming off a loss and needed a fight to get back his bearings."

Jr (San Jose, Ca)

Can you ask Mr Arum who is the one fighter that he did not promote that he wished he could have promoted

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

Bob says it would have been Felix Trinidad, because he was a classy guy who was a terrific fighter, very fan friendly and great box office. He regrets that he never had a chance to promote him.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Ask Bob if he plans on nuturing any up and coming American Heavyweights.

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

He says the only American heavyweights that appear to be worth squat are under contract to the New York Football Giants!

Stinky (Pitt)

How long does JuanMa stay at 122?

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

Juanma has been saying he will stay at 122 the rest of this year and then move up next year to featherweight.

Randy (LA)

Ask Bob as a fellow attorney, what it was like working at Justice under RFK?

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

He says it was very, very exciting. He said he learned a lot and it has stayed with him throughout his life. He worked with him 1961-1964.

Nick (South Dakota)

ask bob if he's ever been in a fight

Dan Rafael
  (3:36 PM)

He says yes. He says one of his classic fights was on a subway in New York about 40 years ago.

Steven (NYC)

Does Bob think Cotto needs a real trainer or can Joe Santiago do the job?

Dan Rafael
  (3:37 PM)

He says Miguel is very comfortable with Joe and Joe appears to him to be a reasonably knowledgable. At this stage of his career, he says Miguel doesn't need anyone to teach him to box.

Terrence ((Sacramento))

What's Bob's all-time favorite fight he promoted, and his all-time dream promotion for two fighters of any era

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

His favorite fight he promoted was Hagler-Hearns. As for the any era question, he LOVES the idea of Pacquiao vs. Duran.

David (New Jersey)

Does Bob mind you calling Margarito Margacheato?

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

I have no idea and don't really care.

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

We have breaking news: The weigh in here has been delayed until 4:30 because commission members are stuck in traffic on the Jersey turnpike.

David (tx)

ask bob if manny ever asks him to put him there with marquez for the third time to settle the score?

Dan Rafael
  (3:41 PM)

Bob says no, but that Manny would fight Marquez a third time if that was the best available fight out there.

norberto (Colima)

ask bob at what age he started promoting

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

He was 34.

Dan Rafael
  (3:43 PM)

Bob is going to to an interview with the Atlantic City newspaper so he's walked away but he said he enjoyed chatting with the Freaks. We thank him for his times.

ron (ny)

tell him he was absolutely fascinating

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

I will.

Terrence (Sacramento)

Thanks Bob! Class act.

Tony ((Tampa))

Whats Dan,Ask Bob the hardest puncher he's had with Top Rank.

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

I think I can answer that without even asking Bob. I am pretty sure he would say George Foreman.

Newt (Jacksonville)

Thanks for that, Dan. It's great to get inside the head of a Bob Arum as a fan and get a feel for how he thinks.

Gil (Manhattan)

We should replace you with Bob on Friday's

Dan Rafael
  (3:47 PM)

Don't get smart.

Mrs. DTM (at work)

Someday, I aspire to be a special guest chatter

Jamerson (White Plains, NY)

The Arum stuff was gold....thanks for giving us the opportunity to see his thoughts on the best sport there is, Big Guy....

Dan Rafael
  (3:48 PM)

You got. I try to bring it to the Freaks like that when I can. By the way, Yuri Foreman, who fights tomorrow night just stopped by.

Newt (Jacksonville)

You should try to get DK on a chat. There's no telling the fun that could be!

Dan Rafael
  (3:49 PM)

That would be fun.

filkin (nyc)

is fight on telemundo still on today if so what time?

Dan Rafael
  (3:50 PM)

I got an email from the promoter, Tuto Zabala, and he said the fight is still on but Telemundo won't air it until June 3 on tape delay.

Norberto (Colima)

yeah DK chatting from his tub with a rubber duck

Erik Santos (New York City Queens)

Dan, whats the chances of a Clottey vs Mosley fight occuring this year?

Dan Rafael
  (3:52 PM)

Extremely unlikely. That fight does nothing for Mosley.

Taylor (NC)

How big of a project is Deontay Wilder? As Teddy Atlas says he has that "Eraser"

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 PM)

Deontay is on FNF tonight. He's a prospect but a project because he is so raw. But Teddy is right -- he has that erase in his right hand.

Tomasz Adamek (Newark)

When I am fighting Bernard Hopkins Dan ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:57 PM)

If all goes well, I think maybe in January.

Bedo (NYC)

I thought Erislandy Lara was fighting on FNF tonight? What happened?

Dan Rafael
  (3:58 PM)

He was but he didn't get his P1 visa in time and that is needed for him to fight in Arizona, so he is off the show.

filkin (nyc)

who do you want to see williams fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (4:06 PM)

I'd love to see him fight Sergio Martinez.

Dan Rafael
  (4:06 PM)

We have breaking news from right here in Ballys.

Dan Rafael
  (4:07 PM)

Demetrius Hopkins, who is supposed to be on the undercard tomorrow, just was arrested here in the hotel and led out. The reason is for owing $16,000 in back child support payments.

Dan Rafael
  (4:09 PM)

I can't believe that just happened -- right out there in the hallway from the media center I am in.

Grant (San Diego)

Any chance the Lara fight could be moved to LA tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (4:10 PM)

I spoke to the folks at Golden Boy and Lara co-manager Shelly Finkel and that was being discussed but I am not sure what happened.

John (NYC)

don't know the details, so hard to "condemn" Hopkins, but deadbeat dads are pretty hard to root for.

Dan Rafael
  (4:11 PM)

His manager, Cameron Dunkin, just told me the woman he owed the money to was already supposed to get $6,000 from his purse tomorrow and then the rest after the next fight. I guess it didn't work out that way.

Butch (Pittsburgh PA)

DTM, what is the best fight on paper for this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (4:13 PM)

Probably Ortiz-Maidana.

Ty (Philly)

Clearly arresting him after the fight would make more sense if they want their money...they just wanted to make a show out of it, lousy cops.

Dan Rafael
  (4:13 PM)

There was no show. It was all quiet without a crowd.

Jay (Tampa)

Will Alex Povetkin taking another fight before trying to get a shot with Klitschko?

Dan Rafael
  (4:14 PM)

If he wants to be next in the fall, no way, or he will be deemed unavailable and lose his spot.

Love Child (Mobile)

My dad always paid his child support!

david (texas)

any word on chris johns condition at the moment?

Dan Rafael
  (4:15 PM)

Nothing specific. I have a message out to his people trying to check on it.

R! (Yay Area)

So is Wladimir free to fight anyone of his choice (Arreola) or is his IBF Mandatory due?

Dan Rafael
  (4:18 PM)

Wlad's mandatory against Povetkin is due this fall. But he could possibly get an exception.

Jay (Tampa)

Has the James Toney - Sergei Lyakhovich fight been confirmed yet?

Dan Rafael
  (4:20 PM)

Not yet, they're having some financial issues -- no surprise -- and the fight may not come off.

sam (philly)

have you played fight night round 4 yet?

Dan Rafael
  (4:20 PM)

No.

David (Houston)

Are we ever going to see that David Yourdan guy that was in against the ghost again? He looked pretty good to me...

Dan Rafael
  (4:21 PM)

Maybe. He actually fights this weekend overseas.

david (texas)

i heard something about oscar de la hoya fighting in an exhibition match, that true?

Dan Rafael
  (4:22 PM)

He may do a charity thing at the WBA convention.

Erik (Austin, TX)

Best chat idea EVER...Roger Mayweather LIVE from the Taco Bell drive-thru

Dan Rafael
  (4:23 PM)

Breaking news!

Dan Rafael
  (4:24 PM)

Cameron Dunkin says they are going to get Hopkins out and he will probably be able to fight. They are going through the paperwork and if the judge allows it, he would fight and his debt would be cleared up on Monday. So we will see what happenes.

Sean (New Jersey)

Bernard putting up that bail?

Dan Rafael
  (4:25 PM)

LOL! No.

Body (Tucson)

All of Top Ranks small $40 ppv shows are killing my wallet!

Dan Rafael
  (4:27 PM)

I hear ya but without these shows, the fighters wouldn't fight. These shows are costly -- the purses, the travel, the TV production costs. And the promoter is entitled to make a profit as well. I really don't have a problem with these kinds of shows. You just pick and chose what you like or can afford or try to get some people together to chip in.

Marc (Malden, MA)

How much money would I have to give the WBA, in order for them to make me a "Champion in Recess?"

Dan Rafael
  (4:27 PM)

Probably a few bucks, maybe a bottle of rum, maybe a couple of bags of doritos.

david (texas)

is erik morales really considering a comeback?

Dan Rafael
  (4:28 PM)

Yes. He is supposed to fight later this summer in Mexico.

Dan Rafael
  (4:30 PM)

OK, Freaks, hope you enjoyed today's chat with me and Bob Arum. I'm headed over to the weigh in. Hope you check out the notebook and blogs and enjoy a good fight weekend. Talk to you in two weeks (next week is 4th of July weekend and I won't be chatting). Peace.
