Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Hey guys. Newt is busy listening to attorneys ramble on at the Mayfield trial, so I'm holding down the fort today. What's up?

Jordan (Candor, NC)

Terry, thanks for the honesty in reporting. How long into Saturday night's event before half the field is wadded up on a restart? I'm guessing somewhere around lap 27.

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

Good point Jordan, but I think we're more likely to see that with 27 to go rather than Lap 27. The drivers wil play it safe early in the race, but they get anxious late in the race when time is running out.

Benjamin (ATL)

Who are your top 5 for this weekend and give me 2 dark horses that could steal a win at the super speedway?

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

Top 5 _ Gordon, Johnson, Stewart, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch.Darkhorse 2 _ Junior and Hamlin.

Justin (Houston/ Texas/ USA)

What is going on with Brad Keselowski's talks with Rick Hedrick? Where might he land? Stewart-Haas or JR Motorsports in a Cup ride?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

It all depends on sponsorship Justin. I think Brad's preference is a third car Stewart-Haas.

Deuce (Denver, CO)

With George gone in IRL, what's the chance we'll see the start time for the Indy 500 moved back so we can see the Memorial day double again? Is Humpy Wheeler being mentioned as a replacement

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

Humpy has said he might help out as a consultant, but a full time gig isn't in the cards. I hope they do move the start time back, or even better, race the Indy 500 and the Coaco-Cola 600 on different days, one on Sunday and one on Monday. But I don't see it happening.

Tom (Cincy)

How many years does J Gordin and Mark Martin has left?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

Gordon's situation depends on his back problems. But he has said he has no plans to race into his mid 40s. Martin probably will race as long as someone is willing to give him a quality ride, which probably is two or three more years.

Chris (Richmond, VA)

Assume that Danica flees a sinking IRL ship for NASCAR, how soon would the Indy 500 be run with stock cars?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

Slow down there Chris. We're a long, long way from ever seeing that happen.

Devin (Magna, UT)

Do you think Stewart-Haas Racing will have better luck this weekend in Daytona than they did back in February?

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

Stewart finished eighth in the 500, so that's not so bad. But yes, I expect Tony and Ryan to do well Saturday night.

Jeff (Chicago, IL)

As we hit the half way point of this season, what/who do you see as the biggest surprise this season and the biggest disappointment?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

Biggest surprise _ Stewart leading the standings on his new team.Biggest disappointment _ RCR. No one saw them struggling like they have.

Devin (Magna, UT)

Who do you think will get their first career cup series win next?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

That list is a little slim now, but I'll say Ambrose at Watklins Glen.

BJ (FALKVILLE,AL)

I AM SO READY FOR JR. TO START RUNNING GOOD AGAIN, WHEN DO YOU THINK THAT WILL HAPPEN EVERY WEEK?

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

Every week? Not until next year. But look for him to run well Saturday night.

Rich (Clearwater)

TB, Consistency is one thing, but, it seems that winners of 2 races should be pretty assured of being in the top 12...Any idea if Nascar is considering awarding WINNERs more points prior to the chase after this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

Not that I know of, but they should. It's the biggest flaw of the points system. Or just say if you win you're in as long as you rank in the top 20.

Devin (Magna, UT)

Is there any chance of the Cup Series running at Montreal sometime in the next 3-5 years?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

I'd love to see it, but I doubt it. Great city and a cool racetrack, but it's on an island and you can't park campers there.

Chuck (Boston, MA)

Any opinion on Joey Logano being the youngest NASCAR driver to win a race consider he was, in his own words, just lucky enough to be sitting in the right car?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

He's far from the first driver to get a lucky rain win. But I'm happy for Joey. He's a great kid with quite a future ahead of him.

John (Las Vegas, Nevada)

Have you heard anything on Vegas getting a second race?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

Not gonna happen unless Bruton wants to move one of his races there from another track, and right now he's more concerened with getting a Cup race at Kentucky. But Vegas now has the post-season awards banquet, which is a big deal.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

Hey Terry! I definitely want to give Jeremy Mayfield the benefit of the doubt and I want to believe he wouldn't make a mistake like using Meth. Adderall is a prescription for ADHD and Narcolepsy and taken without a prescription, they are amphetamines better known as "greenies" which are on all of the published sports banned drug lists. Do you sense worries around the garage that other prescriptions may cause the same type of false negative?

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

No. Drivers know to talk to league medical officials about any drug they are taking or plan to take. It's just common sense.

Mark T (Mount Airy, MD)

Hey Terry, is the Milwaukee track in danger of losing the Nationwide and IRL races due to being past due with the sanction fees?????

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

Sure. If you don't pay the man, you don't get the race. I's not exactly the glamor stop for either series, so the Milwaukee folks need to settle up on the money deal.

Rick (Buffalo, NY)

Any news on big sponsorship changes? Shell leaving RCR for the 5 car - Bass Pro staying or leaving EGR? - NAPA going to Truex?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

EGR officials say BPS is staying. Shell has some major financial problems these days, so who knows what will happen there. NAPA probably will be on Martin's car next year. We'll find out next week.

Devin (Tn)

So by your win and your in as long as your in the top 20 rule, Logano and Reut are in, but Edwards, Hamlin, Newman, Biffle and Montoya are out?? How would that be fair ?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

Wrong Devin. All those guys rank in the top 12. The top 12 still would make it on points. The win and you're in deal would only come into play for drivers not in the top 12.

Jack (Brooklyn, NY)

Dale Jr back in victory lane at Daytona on Saturday night. How big a boost would that be for the sport?

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

Huge, for the sport and for Junior. No one brings more attention than Dale Jr.

RAy gordon reid ( GLEN ST MARYS FLA 32040 )

QUESTION TO TERRY BLONT AT 2,40PM HI TERRY WHICH IS YOU FAVROITE DAYTONA 4o0 MEMORY KING RICHARD PETTY 200 WIN OR DALE JR;S

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

Both were great, but it would be Dale Jr. for me. Very emotional seeing him win it there a few months after his father's death.

Fake Newton (Court TV)

You wanna trade places with me right now? It is very dry in here.

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

I'm sure the real Newt is busily looking up legal jargon as we speak.

Matt (Chicago)

Five drivers, nine races, three Chase spots and 17 points separating them. Who of the 10-14 bunch gets in and who's left on the sidelines after Richmond?

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

Who knows, but I'll guess for you.In _ JPM, Martin and KensethOut _ Kahne and Reutimann.

Chris (Richmond, VA)

I agree that it was not very likely that Danica would leave the IRL for NASCAR before yesterday. With the ouster of Tony George and no more IMS money propping up the IRL, how much more likely do you think the possibility that she will jump to NASCAR is now?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

It pushed her a little closer, no doubt, because of the uncertainty in the IRL. But I still expect her to stay.

Rich (LA, CA)

Terry, Will either Jamie mcmurray or Elliott Sadler be relevant in Sprint Cup racing again?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

Depends on what you mean by relevant. If you mean title contenders, probably not.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

With Tony George being moved out, do you think we're closer to being able to have the Indy-Charlotte double again?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

I really don't think the IRL will fold. This is a transition period for them, but the league still is in a good position to succeed now that the open-wheel war is over.

Devin (Magna, UT)

Do you think there will be rule changes to eliminate teams from starting and parking? Rules like they have to prove that their car can't continue on for whatever reason they're saying.

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

NASCAR officials said earlier this year they have no interest in doing that. If you can show up a qualify, you can make you five laps, get your check and go home.

Michael (Connecticut)

What's is your 5 picks for newest member first class in Hall of Fame tmw night?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

The top 5 won't be determined until October, but my picks are Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt Sr., Bill France Sr., Bill France Jr. and David Pearson. The first three are locks. The last two or debatable for the first class.

Devin (Magna, UT)

What changes do you think need to be made to the cars or catch fences to avoid another incident like what happened at Talladega this spring with Carl Edwards?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

Eliminate the yellow-line out of bounds rule.

Jeffy D (Feeding Hills MA)

Is overall purse money down this year as well as the sponsorship dollars?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

No. Purse money is the same.

Adam (Galax)

What impact will the resignation of Tony George have on NASCAR?

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

Not a lot. The Allstate 400 will continue to be one of NASCAR biggest events. The one thing it could do is push Danica into NASCAR, but I still expect her to stay in the IRL.

Devin (Magna, UT)

Could John Andretti have done the double this year if he wanted to with the Coca Cola 600 being postponed to Monday?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

It's not realy the double unless you do it on the same day.

Rich (Clearwater)

What's it cost now to run a top-tier team (driver salary included)?

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

$15 million in sponsorship. Drivers salaries vary quite a bit, anywhere from $2 million to $10 million.

Rick (VA)

Will the Wood Bros get back to full time racing next year? I miss seeing the 21 out there.

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

It's pretty iffy. Sadly, those days may be over.

Jessica (Ft Lauderdale Fl)

Do you think Jamie McMurray is going to Yates?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

Yes. I'd be surprised if it didn't go down that way.

Kevin (Las Vegas)

Do you see Tony and Jr hooking it up and running away from the field? If they do will Hendrick put pressure on Tony to let Jr win?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Absolutely not on the second part. Tony would laugh at that suggestion, but it would happen anyway. I'm sure Tony and Junior would love to hook-up in the draft, but you never know if both will be in the right place at the right time.

Jeff (Chattanooga, TN)

Bill Elliott in the HOF in the next few years?

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

Bill will get in a some point. I'm not sure how soon. There are a lot of worthy candidates.

Devin (Magna, UT)

How close do you think Ryan Newman is to getting back into victory lane?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

Very close at some tracks. It wouldn't surprise me a bit to see him win a race this summer.

Ed (NC)

Have any rules been published yet on HOF criteria? Do drivers have to be inactive? Any chance Jeff Gordon gets in while still active?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

Drivers must be retired for three years. Teams owner can be active, but they have to have 10 years in the sport.

Jeffy D (Feeding Hills MA)

The way Brad and Edwards bumperlocked and charged to the front at Talladega opened some eyes- can the same tactic work at Daytona- even with the trickier turns?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

Daytona is a much different animal than Dega. Handling is a much bigger issue at Daytona. But it's clear a two-car train is fast with the COT at the plate tracks.

Devin (Magna, UT)

Do you think Reed Sorenson was the best pick to be in the famed 43 car?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

No, but I don't know what their options were.

paul (albany ny)

greatest celebration.....2001 Pepsi 400

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

Greatest celebration I've seen was Dale Sr.'s Daytona 500 victory in 1998, finally winning the big one in his 20th try.

Terry Blount
  (3:02 PM)

Gotta go folks. Good chat today. Have a great week. I'm out. Peace.
