Chat with Mark Garrow

Mark Garrow
  (3:01 PM)

Good afternoon everyone....Let's get the partaayyy started!

Rich (saint peters)

Back in sunny florida..... I have 14,18,5,20, and 6. I'm not sure about 20.....what do you think? Is 20 and 6 better than 33 and 7? Thank you for your great wisdom week in and week out.....talk to you sunday.

Mark Garrow
  (3:05 PM)

Rich, that's a tough call..14,18, and 5 real solid. I don't expect much from Logano and the 6 is so inconsistent too..I like 33 a bunch this weekend..Bowyer has Daytona figured out...but Robby Gordon is always a wild card..feast or famine and usually famine...call me crazy but the way Paul Menard has run last two 400's..might be better pick than Robby...might have to rethink this team a little too..depends on practice and qualifying and what crew chiefs have to say..

Ryan (Gilbert, AZ)

Hey Mark, my Y! league gives bonus points for the top 4 qualifiers and was wondering who you think might have the HP to make a pole run........I figure the 1 and 42 will be stout, but was wondering who else you think might be fast on Friday

Mark Garrow
  (3:06 PM)

I think 18 will be fast..24,48..those are the three that come quickly to mind when I think about that..

Tyler (Snohomish, Wa)

Man you are probably the smartest man in fantasy nascar, when you told me to put the 77 in place of the 43 this weekend, i thought you were crazy because sorenson had the fastest car all weekend. But when the 77 took 6th place and the 43 didnt even get a top ten that was just a facepalm moment from now on i will take all your advise and apply it to my team- Tyler from Snohomish Washington

Mark Garrow
  (3:07 PM)

Tyler..thanks for the props..but before you make me a "god"...I do get a few wrong too...not that many mind you..lol...

Wade (Jacksonville, FL)

Mark, give me your top 5 finishers for the Coke Zero 400. I think Kurt Busch is a good pick, I mean, he runs so well here, but never gets the respect, because he doesn't have a plate win yet, but everytime in Daytona, if he doesn't have mechanical issues or a wreck, he gets a top 5 or top 10, look at his stats at this track, it's unbelievable. Also good picks are Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards.

Mark Garrow
  (3:08 PM)

Wade..here's my pre-race top-20....1. Kyle Busch2. Carl Edwards3. Tony Stewart4. Kurt Busch5. Jeff Gordon6. Matt Kenseth 7. Ryan Newman8. Greg Biffle9. Mark Martin10.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.11.Jimmie Johnson12.Kasey Kahne13.Clint Bowyer14.Martin Truex, Jr.15.Kevin Harvick16.Brian Vickers17.Juan Pablo Montoya18.Jamie McMurray19.David Reutimann20.David Ragan

Daniel (Indiana)

hey mark, trying to keep a bunch of studs off this weekend, since this is a crapshoot race! How Do you think the falling 8 guys would be okay to have Saturday night? Kenseth, J.Gordon, Reutimann, Ragan, Jr. Menard, Keselowski and Sorenson

Mark Garrow
  (3:10 PM)

You're right Daniel...total crapshoot..those 8 drivers are pretty decent to go to battle with..I see only Kenseth and Gordon doing serious damage here but you can never tell in a restrictor plate race what might happen..I have been killed in the last five plate races..just killed..leaves "The Guru" feeling like "The Goober" everytime...lol..

Mark Garrow
  (3:10 PM)

Kyle W (Taylorsville, KY)

I'm saving starts this week, how do you feel about the following team? A-24, 18 B-88, 6, 9, 42 (qual.) C- 43, 44I know the 14, 2, 48, will be good here but i'm down on allocations and don't want to use them at the crapshoot known as Daytona.

Mark Garrow
  (3:11 PM)

I can go along with your team and reasoning Kyle..you may get really lucky you never know..

JJ Gloor (Hicksville, Ohio)

Need Help Wise One!!!!!!!! In 9th in my league and want to sneek in to the top 5.....18,14,33,6,83 or 18,14,2,26,7 or 18,14,2,9,66 What do you think>???I have smoke for sure How ya think 48 will be also??? Thanks!!!!!!!! Owe ya a cold pint!!!!!

Mark Garrow
  (3:13 PM)

JJ..I thinjk the safest team to go with is the first one 18,14 are going to be really good. 33 is potential top-10 and so is 83..6 was top-five last year but if he could just get you a top-15 this time you could be in real good shape..7 scares me and 66 could be a start and park.

George (ATL)

Thinking about going real low this week...Gilliand, Speed, Nemechek since its a crap shoot anyways and loading the top. Thoughts?

Mark Garrow
  (3:14 PM)

Here's the problem last week at NH both Gilliland and Nemechek were start and parks..Need to rethink George sorry.

Ryan (Gilbert, AZ)

Good afternoon Guru......I enjoyed the radio broadcast on Sunday, especially the shout out to us fantasy gear heads.......How about this for a prelim team for the Firecracker 400........14,18,83,88,6...........Also, you have any sleepers for this Saturday.........I know RP racing is a crapshoot but that seems to happen more at Dega than Daytona..........Thanks for the time............

Mark Garrow
  (3:15 PM)

Ryan..I think your prelim team is pretty good..need 6 to come through and I think 88 will perform better than people might suspect. Other sleepers might include Elliott Sadler..going way low Paul Menard might be able to pull out a top-20 at basement price..

Mike (Albany, NY)

I'm in a league that limits your number of starts for each driver. Because of the frequency and magnitude of the wrecks at Daytona, should I SAVE guys like Stewart, Gordon, Kyle Busch, and Mark Martin for future races, and use guys like Kenseth, Newman, Burton, Bowyer, and Kurt Busch for this weekend? Thanks Guru.

Mark Garrow
  (3:16 PM)

Mike..in your situation I'd go ahead and do that..no use using up picks you might "have to have" later in the season.

Jim (Brunswick, NY)

Hi Mark. I have a question about these "start and park" cars. Why do some drivers do this? A short while ago I heard that Dave Blaney's team did not intend to finish the race. Why get in the race, then? Is it just good, financially speaking, to merely get in and run 30 laps, and then get out? Thanks.

Mark Garrow
  (3:20 PM)

Jim, it's the only way some of these teams survive..Last place money at NH was a little over $71K...if you don't buy any tires..you might make $10-15K by the time the weekend is over..that's if you already have your cars built and have minimum pit crew..If you try to run the whole race with the tire bill you'll lose $30K..so until they have sponsorship some of these teams have to start and park just to pay the bills and keep the doors open.

Frank Hernandez Jr (long beach,ca.)

Who is the over-all time best N A S C A R driver out there or beyond????

Mark Garrow
  (3:24 PM)

tough call..Richard Petty, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough were the best in one era..then Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt took it to the next level..then Jeff Gordon and perhaps he's handed off to Jimmie Johnson..Petty and Pearson had to deal with quarter mile dirt tracks and other bullrings..but today's drivers have to beat more drivers week in, week out so it's hard to compare..Personally, I think Tony Stewart is one of the most talented drivers we've ever had.

RAY GORDON REID (PALM COAST FLA 32164)

QUESTION TO AT 3.10 MARK GARROW PM GOOD WEDNESDAY GURU WHOS YOUR PICK FOR DAYTONA SATURDAY

Mark Garrow
  (3:25 PM)

Ray Gordon, my number one pick and I might no be too popular for it, but numero uno for me heading into the Coke Zero 400 is Kyle Busch.

nipper (georgia)

I have my stud team for daytona:48 18 39 29 55 whaddya think?

Mark Garrow
  (3:27 PM)

Don't know about the 55..hasn't done a thing since winning two races in a row at Daytona a few years back..Top-10 this year in Daytona was "rain-aided"..You need to keep a close eye on him in practice.

Michael (TX)

Wizard of Charlotte, please rank these for Daytona 44,7,47,96,09,43,77 Thank you

Mark Garrow
  (3:28 PM)

47,43,44,09,96,77,7

Bill (Boston)

Is kesolowski going to race this week?

Mark Garrow
  (3:29 PM)

Yes, he is. I don't see a Talladega-like upset though. Daytona is about handling..still James Finch team has known what it's doing on plate races over the years and has had some good runs..Keselowski could be a top-15 player.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

Hey Mark, I enjoy the podcasts. Do certain teams(Hendrick, Roush-Fenway, etc.) have more success over others at Daytona?

Mark Garrow
  (3:31 PM)

It seems in the July race ..Roush does a little better than Hendrick..it's more about handling than brute speed..Dodge teams seem to be able to hold their own at Daytona..don't have a reason record book last few races bares that out..

Mike (Los Angeles)

48 a keeper this week or trade him out for the 2?

Mark Garrow
  (3:31 PM)

I like the 2 a little better..but it's almost six of one..and half dozen of the other..

W (MA)

what do you think of 14, 18, 9, 88, 6? Also do u know if kesselowski is racing? How do u think logano will do? thanks!

Mark Garrow
  (3:32 PM)

If the 6 comes through you could be in good shape. Keselowski, again, is racing, and Logano feels like top-20 car to me.

fred (Pennsylvania)

chevy ford toyota whats the best

Mark Garrow
  (3:33 PM)

I think the Toyotas and Fords best set-up for this race.

Jeff (Lafayette, LA)

Guru, what's the situation with Lindsay Czarniak? Single? Could you put in a word for me?

Mark Garrow
  (3:34 PM)

is there some kind of $$ fee involved..because if there is I am your man!..lol..

Matthew Merrill (Bartlesville, OK)

How soon do you think the Mayfield trial will be over today and will he ever lose the scandal NASCAR has dumped on him?

Mark Garrow
  (3:35 PM)

Could last until 4-5:00 eastern..if found totally innocent Mayfield would be welcomed back by everyine in a big hurry...but if not he may never come back from this scandal..

Tiffany (Pittsburgh)

Hi Mark! First time on the Wednesday chat- gonna miss Sunday so thought I'd try to catch you now. Need 2 from 17,99 and 33. Need 4 from 88,9,00,6,1 and 83. I'm at a loss for my bottom picks- need 2 from 43,77,7 and 96- or maybe Keselowski? I'm in yahoo and would like to get some different drivers in this week and save some allocations. Thanks Again!

Mark Garrow
  (3:38 PM)

I go 17 and 99...88,9,1, and 83...09..43..and we'll miss you Sunday...it just won't seem right with you not there..and as I type my eyes are getting watery...of course someone is chopping up onions nearby and that could be it too...lol..

norm (palm springs ca)

Good Afternoon Mark, Hows that Daytona weather? Whats your thoughts on Hornish? Does he have the R6 engine also?

Mark Garrow
  (3:38 PM)

Hornish could run top-20 Saturday night and does have the R-6 motor..

Mark Garrow
  (3:40 PM)

Yes he does and I can see him potentially runing top-20 top-25..

Richard (California)

Hi Mark,Did so-so last week with 48-2-5-29-77( 29 was a gamble, but looked OK until the pile-up). With the cap, would need to drop 48 for 18 ( hate it!) and would have some room. Can you give me some alternatives to 29 or 77? thanks as always.

Mark Garrow
  (3:42 PM)

I got hurt by that wreck big time too because I had 29 and 1 and you could have penciled them in for top-10s easy..29 was heading to the front..I think 29 could be pretty good this weekend..down around his value the 6 might be a hidden gem..Keselowski is going to be worth some thought too..so wil 43, and 44.

Doug (Wisconsin)

Hi Mark...just want to piss and moan a little...I'm sick and tired of winners that are nothing better tan a 20th place car ( not that I have anything against Joey Logano), because of rain! He never even got the checkered flag. I knew as soon as he said he only had enough gas to go 5 more laps, NASCAR would call the race. Did it rain that much that they couldn't of got it finished? They seemed to call it awful quickly. I don't think yellow flag laps should count when it rains. It should be red flagged, and field locked, same as a bad accident. Not to where NASCAR keeps controlling what the outcome is, by throwing yellows any time it feels like it. Even though some think #20 deserved this win, I do not feel the same. Also #18 should of been black-flagged for the poor driving tactics!!!

Mark Garrow
  (3:44 PM)

Doug...do you feel better now..I hope so..nice venting..but Logano was just plain lucky..makes me look like an idiot because I advised against even putting him on a team period..and I still stand by that because performance wise I was absolutely correct..but sometimes you just get "bit" and that's it..

W (MA)

do u like 14,18,9,88,6? should i use sadler or ragan?

Mark Garrow
  (3:46 PM)

Sadler has been a little more consistent at Daytona...just loves the place period..close call..need to take a look at qualifying, and practice..You should be in pretty good shape with the other drivers.

Harry (in the pit)

Mark, we can't have NASCAR chat right now. We're eating ice cream.

Mark Garrow
  (3:47 PM)

funneee...and you're not sharing...You guys won't give me any ice cream..Tiffany has broken off our weekly Sunday rendezvous...how much more emotionally do you people think I can take?....

Tyler (Snohomish,Wa)

mark, hows my pre race team, 00,6,17,24,88

Mark Garrow
  (3:48 PM)

That's definitely going down a path few will go..I can see all with top-15 to top-20 potential.

norm (palm springs ca)

Hi Mark, Whats the best local burger joint there, I'll be there at the end of the month. Do think Jrs car will handle well there?

Mark Garrow
  (3:49 PM)

I like steak and shake for the milkshakes..I think Junior is coming determined to throw everytyhing but the kitchen sink at this race..which means hero or zero time.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

Hey Mark. Do you think NASCAR should add a road course to the Chase schedule? If so, which course?

Mark Garrow
  (3:50 PM)

Please no..should it be there to test who really is the best maybe so...but please no...

Austin (Fitchburg, MA)

Do you think that Dale Jr. can turn this around or is he gonna be bad all year long?

Mark Garrow
  (3:50 PM)

I think he'll turn it around...this week could be the start because of his fondness for Daytona..say hello to Ron Bouchard when you see him for me will you?

paul (nc)

SADLER NATION! how's that best buy dodge look to you?

Mark Garrow
  (3:51 PM)

Could be a nice dark horse..loves Daytona.

Austin (Fitchburg, MA)

Do you think nascar should have rain tires?

Mark Garrow
  (3:51 PM)

no..fun to watch once...after that just a freak show on the ovals.

Alan (PA)

you ducked me this past sunday!!!! DENNY HAMLIN IS A BUM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark Garrow
  (3:52 PM)

Nobody ducked you...as a matter of fact many of the players were just licking their chops for your post...lol...

Tiffany (Pittsburgh)

Lol! I'm pretty sure its the onions!!

Mark Garrow
  (3:52 PM)

just tell that to my broken heart..

Lou (NYC)

Is the 82 a start and park? And what time is the chat Saturday, lets get an early start..big party day!

Mark Garrow
  (3:55 PM)

82 is not a start and park..but scary pick nonetheless..Saturday chat will start at 5:00 eastern time.

Alan (PA)

YOU DIDNT EVEN RESPOND!! ha ha!! YOU KNOW ITS TRUE

Mark Garrow
  (3:55 PM)

I looked for your post...it was never there....Hamlin's success was too much for you to handle...lol..

squawk (tree)

nascar is bad for the environment

Mark Garrow
  (3:56 PM)

Sorry you feel that way..but I get the feeling you think everything is bad for the environment..just a thought..no offense.

Mishelle (FL)

Hey Guru- You're giving wild child a lot of credit aren't you? He's messed things up for me for a couple of weeks now. Do you reallysee getting his stuff together

Mark Garrow
  (3:58 PM)

If there's a place he's going to do it..it's Daytona..If he runs bad there..it could get really ugly.

Denny Hamlin (Daytona)

Hey Alan, watch me dominate this week, when no ones expecting it!!!!!!!

Mark Garrow
  (3:58 PM)

You go girlfriend!

Erik (OH)

Would you take the #1 or the #29?

Mark Garrow
  (3:59 PM)

I have them back to back in my pre-race rankings, favoring 1 a little more than 29.

Ryan (Gilbert, AZ)

What do you think about the 96 this week?

Mark Garrow
  (4:00 PM)

Bobby could be sneaking top-20 to top-25 runner..

24 Fan (Sunshine state)

Is Khane going to have the new motor and how do you see him doing. Thanks for the advice on 77 and 43 from last week, Turex was my lame duck was a ok week anyway

Mark Garrow
  (4:01 PM)

Yes, I've been told he'll have new motor and could run top-10 Saturday night. Truex nailed me too, but that was just bad luck. He was running well enough to finish top-five.

squawk (tree)

http://science.howstuffworks.com/nascar-environment.htmThe cars' non-EPA-regulated engines and dangerously high speeds make the sport exciting to watch. They also make it one of the least environmentally friendly sports out there. NASCAR drivers make a living doing exactly what the rest of us are supposed to avoid in order to stave off global warming: Drive ridiculously powerful, gas-guzzling sports cars at extremely high speeds for entertainment value. The sport burns so much fuel that the U.S. government labeled NASCAR a waste of gas during the fuel shortage of the 1970s

Mark Garrow
  (4:03 PM)

Got it...don't necessarily agree...but willing to let you have your say...Still curious how the earth could freeze and then be completely covered by water without man's intervention or cars though and now we are the main cause?

Mark Garrow
  (4:03 PM)

Got it...don't necessarily agree...but willing to let you have your say...Still curious how the earth could freeze and then be completely covered by water without man's intervention or cars though and now we are the main cause?

bob (ca)

I got the 20 for 15.8 right now since I picked him last segment and kept him. Is there any time I should drop him getting him for this good value?

Mark Garrow
  (4:04 PM)

At this point, probably not..I'm going to Daytona and rub his head then go buy a lottery ticket..

Garage (Daytona)

Is Cousin Carl gonna get his first back flip?!

Mark Garrow
  (4:04 PM)

If its a real hot slick night it could play into his hands..it really could.

Big Papi (BOS)

Anyways Guru- Looking for some "C" drivers for Yahoo...who would you pick...Sorenson,Hornish,Dinger,Ambrose,Labonte trying to think of the other drivers in there...can you give me any help

Mark Garrow
  (4:05 PM)

Keselowski comes to mind and believe it or not Paul Menard..

Jeremy (Medford oregon)

Hey mark first time here, I have the 24,11,16, and the 99 on my team. I need to start 3 of them. i know that i'm going to start the 24, but between the 11, 16, and the 99, who do you think. Thanks.

Mark Garrow
  (4:06 PM)

Welcome Jeremy..I'd go 16 and 99..Roush cars will be strong on slick track..11 and Daytona haven't gotten along all that well..words that will make Alan in PA jump for joy..lol..

Ken (Hendersonville)

Mark: Just got back and see that Alan is back...remind him to put the dunces cap on and go to the blackboard and write 151 times...Denny is not a bum (thats the number of points Denny has averaged over the past 3 races while Alan did his vanishing act)

Mark Garrow
  (4:07 PM)

Just one shot across the bow Alan in PA....

Big Papi (BOS)

WOW who invited Al Gore to this chat?

Mark Garrow
  (4:09 PM)

He heard we have such a good time he or she just wanted to be a part of it that's all..everyone is welcome even if they are burning up valuable electricity with their computer..of course it's kind of hard to type hugging a tree..lol..

Chris (Connecticut)

Sunday was anything but a victor since everyone lost. The best car was not in victory lane and once again the Nascar Fan was given a rained shortned event so the west coast viewer could wait unitl 11:00 instead of 10:00 am to watch the race. The same viewers who barely fill California Speedway and Infenion. The question is this. When will Nascar give up on the west coast and get these races started at a reasonable time in the East? Both this year and last year at Loudon, had the races started at 1:00 pm EST we would have had a checkered flag and a legitimate winner.

Mike (Wash.)

Mark: 77 or 6

Mark Garrow
  (4:09 PM)

I think 6 has more upside..but both are scary picks at Daytona.

DJ (FL)

Is there any one who just dominates Daytona and flat out loves it here?

Mark Garrow
  (4:10 PM)

Lately the record book shows no one fits that category and makes this race tough to figure.

Big Papi (BOS)

Umm Guru my ? your answer...?

Mark Garrow
  (4:10 PM)

Did I miss it..repost

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

If any current NASCAR drivers had to end their career today, who would you nominate for the Hall of Fame? Thanks again!

Mark Garrow
  (4:12 PM)

Gordon, Stewart, Johnson..Kenseth, Martin..Edwards, Burton, Dale Jr..Bobby Labonte..and Denny Hamlin...just kidding on him..because of you know who..lol..

24 Fan (Sunshine state)

Mark what happen to my answer? It must be in cyber space. Here goes again How do you see Khane doing this week and will he have the new motor.

Mark Garrow
  (4:12 PM)

Yes, he'll have new motor this week and I can see him finishing 8th to 15th.

Big Papi (BOS)

Who are the two strongest "C" drivers in Yahoo for Daytona?

Mark Garrow
  (4:13 PM)

Keselowski...Ragan maybe..I don't know Yahoo drivers all that well.

Alan (Pa)

HAMLIN = NO HALL OF FAME.................. EVER!

Mark Garrow
  (4:13 PM)

told you it would drive him nuts...

Colby (Lake Tapps,WA)

which is better 48 18 5 88 98 or 48 18 83 88 29

Mark Garrow
  (4:14 PM)

Second team feels a little safer to me..good average across the board.

Ryan (Gilbert, AZ)

Mayfield allowed to race this week!!!!!!! Granted injuntion.

Mark Garrow
  (4:14 PM)

Wow..

Mark Garrow
  (4:16 PM)

Folks got to run folks...see you at 5:00 eastern this Saturday night..Have a great week..may the force be with you..and now the immortal words..."The Guru has left the building!"
