Hi, everyone. Several Roy Halladay-related questions already lined up, so let's get to those first.
Happ, Donald and Drabek for Halladay - yea or nay?
The Phillies would do that in a second but I don't see the Jays biting on that one. For me, Donald and Happ have ceilings as solid regulars, and the Jays are going to want more than one guy with a lot of upside for Halladay.
How about this trade (I made up), Roy Halladay and Rod Barajas to the Rangers for Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Neftali Feliz, Marcus Lemon, and Wilmer Font? Rangers giving up enough to get Halladay?
That one's closer, but I'm not sure the Jays would quite bite on that one. Saltalamacchia never has hit like I and others expected, and I'm not a fan of Lemon. Also not sure Halladay would approve a trade to that launching pad.
Good morning Jim. My question is do you think that the Blue Jays would rather take a worse deal than Boston or New York might offer for Halladay just so they won't have to face him as much?
Interesting question. As much as the Jays would hate to trade Halladay within the AL East, their priority has to be making the best deal possible. I think they realize that. Now if other offers are virtually equal, then I think you send him out of the division if at all possible.
Buchholz Bowden Anderson for Halladay
I think the Jays would take that deal, but I'm not sure the Red Sox would want to give up all three of those players in one deal.
Do you think this deal gets Halladay for the Phils: Taylor, Drabek, Marson, and PTBNL
That one also might work.
Jim, I'm sure it depends on the GM and situation, but overall, is it really worth the prospects it will probably cost for Halladay, who after all is 32 years old?
It depends on the deal, of course. But 32 isn't ancient for any pitcher and there's no reason he can't keep going for several more years. He's far more of a sure thing than any prospect the Jays will get in return, no matter how good that prospect is.
What do you think of my proposed Colorado trade offer for Denver native Roy Halladay?Blue Jays get:-Brandon Hynick, RHP-SP (MLB ready - top 3 Colorado pitching prospect)-Greg Reynolds, LHP-SP (1st Round Pick)-Chris Nelson, SS (1st Round Pick)-Jonathon Herrera, 2B, SS (Top 100 Prospect)-Matt Murton, OF (MLB ready - an offensive monster)-Garret Atkins, 3B, 1B, DH (career 25HR, 100RBI, .300 type hitter only 29 years old)Colorado Gets:-Roy Halladay, RHP-SP (Cy Young contender and Denver native)
No way. That's a bunch of chaff, the type of offer you make in a fantasy league when you're trying to swindle the other guy.
What would it take for the Yankees to get Halladay?
Maybe something along the lines of Phil Hughes, Jesus Montero and Austin Jackson. Not sure if the Yankees would do that.
Would the Rays be considered potential suitors for Doc Halladay? If so, what type of package would get the deal done?
Yes, the Rays still have a lot of young talent. Might have to be something like Wade Davis, Reid Brignac and Desmond Jennings, and the Rays have enough talent at those positions to be able to afford it.
Ok, then would Vitters, Wells, Marmol and Fox be enough for the Cubs to land Halladay if they were really interested?
I don't think so. Vitters would have to be in the deal, but Wells is pitching over his head and Fox is really a DH. I'm not sure the Cubs have enough and I'm not sure they can take on payroll until they're sold.
Could Evereth Cabrera be a long term answer for the Padres at short? He sure is getting some clutch hits lately and making some web gems./
Now for the non-Halladay portion of our program . . . Cabrera could definitely be the answer. However, he still has a long ways to go with the bat and is losing valuable ABs this year as a major league Rule 5 pick. But he's very talented, no question.
Jim, is High Desert (Mariners) 3rd baseman Alex Liddi a legit prospect? Kid is all of 20-years-old and ripping up H-A ball. Please give a little insight. Thanks!
He is a legit prospect. A rare Italian prospect, he has impressed scouts in the past but just wasn't strong enough to hit. He's still just 19 and is doing much better this year, and it's not just a Cal League mirage.
What's going on with Miguel Sano? Are the Pirates still the favorite to sign him?
MLB may still be in the process of verifying his age. I just asked our international baseball guru, Ben Badler, and he says the Pirates are still the favorites to sign him.
After borrowing a reported $15 million from MLB, what does this mean for Texas and their draft picks? I cannot imagine they would bust slot after MLB did them a favor. Does this mean Purke probably does not sign? Will Scheppers take less to lose another year of development?
That does make you wonder. There are a lot of questions about the health of Scheppers' shoulder, so I don't know what's going to happen there. I still think they find a way to get Purke signed.
Brian Matusz's has gotten off to a great start at AA, do you see him joining the rotation in the second half?
I could see him coming up in September. He signed a major league contract, so he's already on the 40-man roster. Get his feet wet and prepare him to join the rotation full-time in 2010.
Jim - one of Omar's reasons for not trading for a bat is that he does not want to mortgage the future and trade away what few prospects the Mets have. But didn't the Mets/Omar choose that path with all the free agent signings, starting with Delgado and Santana!?!? It's frustrating - b/c if that's the path you've chosen, whether you like it or not, then you just need to keep going after the players you need NOW. The Mets are built to win now, not tomorrow. Thoughts?
I agree with you. There's not enough depth in the system to sustain the club over the long haul. I like Fernando Martinez and Wilmer Flores, but I'm still not sold that they're elite prospects like a Jason Heyward or a Mike Stanton. If you can improved our club, trade them. That said, the Mets' injuries may be too much to overcome this year.
Hi Jim,What those Derek Norris need to do to get promoted from A ball. The reporst i hear say his defense is good and improving and his offense is nuts. 320/416/605/1021 with 20 HRs (6 in the last 4 games) 44/75 BB/K and 6/7 in SB.He is hitting .382 with 6 HRs and a 8/4 BB/K in the last 10 games. From a C ???
There's nothing wrong with letting a 20-year-old tear up low Class A for a whole season. He might spend the final month or so in high Class A, but it's a lot easier to harm a youngster's confidence than to build it back up.
If you had to predict now, do you see Bryce Harper getting a signing bonus in excess of what Strasburg will likely get, seeing as how he'll have more leverage?
Yes, I think that's a fair prediction, assuming Harper lives up to the hype next spring in junior college.
Hypothetical scenario -- it's September, and your team is clearly out of contention (i.e 20-30 games out). Do you "unintentionally" lose as many games as possible to get a shot at Bryce Harper next June?
No. I don't see how a team could tank without it being obvious. It would be hard to regain your fans' faith after they spent all that money on tickets. Also, what if you do that and then Harper doesn't live up to expectations next spring?
Jim, what exactly does Kenny Williams have against prospects? Chris Young, Aaron Cunningham, Chris Carter, Gio Gonzalez, Fautino de los Santos, Ryan Sweeney and now Brandon Allen. How long before Beckham, Poreda and Viciedo follow in their footsteps?
Last time I checked, none of those guys Williams has traded has blossomed into a star. He's simply willing to trade prospects for veterans if he thinks it will improve his big league club. And he won a World Series championship doing exactly that. I don't think he's looking to trade any of those current prospects, particularly Beckham.
Jim, The White Sox seem to have cornered the market on Cuban talent. After Viciedo made it clear he wanted to be in Chicago a year ago, do you see the same happening with Chapman or do you see the Sox with a legit shot at him? I'm guessing he's too expensive and will wind up in NY.Also, what are your thoughts on Viciedo so far? He had a slow start but is starting to come on. If he loses 30 lbs he could be a star.
Chapman is going to command so much money that I think he'll price himself out of joining the White Sox. And when it comes to the extremely-big-money free agents, the Yankees are always the favorites. Viciedo hasn't blown me away so far. He's talented, but so many of the high-priced Cuban defectors don't seem to live up to their billing.
Whats your take on James McOwen's 44 game hit streak in High Desert? Does he have major league potential if so at what capacity?
Impressive accomplishment, obviously. He's a decent prospect but nothing special. He's almost 24 and in high Class A, and he doesn't have a lot of power for a corner outfielder. Let's see what he does when he gets to Double-A and out of the Cal League.
Jim, can you give me scouting information on J.J. Hoover. His single A stats look to be pretty good so far, whip 1.17, 83/11 K/BB.
Workhorse-type starter with four solid pitches, starting with an 88-92 mph sinker.
One more Halladay question please!!! What about Halladay for Porcello. I think it makes sense for both clubs. Tigers get their proven top of the rotation talent to win now, Blue Jays get a number one for years to come at a reasonable price.
I can't see the Tigers doing that, though it would be tempting. Porcello is already so good, so young and cost-controlled for another five seasons.
Will Dustin Ackley be the top Mariner prospect the second he signs? And can he stick with the big-league club in 2010?
Yes. They're going to convert him into a center fielder, so he's going to need some time to work on his defense. I could see him up in Seattle by the end of next season, though.
Let's head to the lightning round . . .
Would you trade Halladay for Strasburg?
I can't see Halladay approving a trade to the Nationals. But if he did, it still would give me pause. How much better than Hallday can Strasburg really be? A lot of it would depend on how much money Strasburg winds up signing for and how the contract is structured. If Boras really does get $50 million for him, I'd easily prefer Halladay.
Is it too soon to call Jason Place a bust?
Not really. Three years after he was a first-round pick, he's hitting a soft .255 in high Class A.
Mat Latos or M. Bumgardner?
Still Bumgarner. But Latos is making it a lot closer.
Lightning round Q: who you voting for (or would vote for) in the final vote?
I'd vote for Carlos Pena in the AL and Pablo Sandoval in the NL. Pena for his recent body of work and Sandoval because I think it would be a cool story. You could talk me into Matt Kemp, too.
How does the rookie signing work? If Strasburg gets a $20 million contract, how long is that spread over?
If a player signs a standard minor league contract, his bonus gets paid out within a year. If a player signs a major league contract, which Strasburg likely will, it can be structured however the team and player see fit. Most of the draft big league deals tend to be four-year contracts.
What are your thoughts on Mike Bianuccui, the OF prospect for the Rangers? He seems to be a hitting machine! Thanks!!!!
I like Bianucci a lot. Could see him being a big league regular if it all works out.
when is the magic year for the o's to break .500 2010, 2011 or later?
Strasburg-Zimmermann-Lannan or Matusz-Tillman-Arrieta
Orioles by a hair.
Cody Johnson or Mike Stanton?
What about Tim Smith for the Rangers
Another one of my favorite sleepers.
Please help a subscriber! When is the mid season top 25 prospects being posted on the website?
Probably early next week.
Smoltz or Buchholz for the rest of this season?
Buster Posey, c, Giants
Jason Heyward, of, Braves
Justin Smoak, 1b, Rangers
Mike Stanton, of, Marlins
Jesus Montero, c, Yankees
Correction on our updated Top 25: Will go up tomorrow.
Jackson or Montero?
Dominic Brown or Michael Taylor?
Jim, would taking on either Wells's or Rios's contracts reduce the price in prospects for Doc?
Brett Anderson or Clayton Kershaw?
Kershaw, despite Anderson's impressive performance this week.
Best CF prospect in the minors?
Beatles or Stones?
Can you be a fan of a major league team (Cubs) and their rival's AAA team (Knights)?
Sure, why not? I assume geography plays a part in both of those passions.
The Who or The Rolling Stones?
Gut feeling: Where would you rank Jesus Montero in your Top 100 Prospects right now?
Tyler Flowers or Montero? And close?
Montero, easily. I don't think either of those guys ia a catcher, though.
Freddie Freeman a mid-season top 25'er?
Not quite for me, but he's getting close.
Purke or Scheppers?
Jim, I thought I heard that Boras might threaten the Nats with Strasburg going to Japan for a year. Wouldn't he just go back into the draft next year? The Nats would then have the 1-2 picks. I don't understand that logic? Wouldn't he get a larger contract if he signed as a #1 this year? Did I hear wrong?
MLB's position would be that Strasburg would re-enter the draft, while Boras' positon would be that Strasburg would be a free agent. An arbitrator probably would have to settle it. Not sure why a Japanese club would allow itself to be used to get Strasburg more money, so this might not work.
Thoughts on Jared Mitchell.
Great athlete, great College World Series, still a ways to go with the bat.
tacos or burritos
Is Aaron Crow going to get more or less than what he was asking for last year? What about more or less than he was offered last year?
I think he'll sign for around $4 million, which was what he wanted right at the deadline. The Nationals held firm at $3.5 million. Nothing against Drew Storen, who they got with the comp pick for Crow this year, but turning Crow into Storen isn't a good baseball move.
A battle of short alliteratively named lefties: Robbie Ross or Kasey Kiker?
Beer or wine or spirits?
Will Mitchell follow Gordon Beckham's path to the bigs?
No, Mitchell won't move nearly as quickly. He's at least two years away.
H. Bailey or Hughes?
How about Kentrail Davis? Was he a reach in the supplemental round?
No, that's where he should have gone. Only a draft-eligible sophomore, we'll see if he signs.
Who's the better overall player, Logan Forsythe or James Darnell? Better 3Bmen?
I'd rather have Darnell overall, but Forsythe is a better third baseman.
Kyle Drabek or Brad Lincoln?
Drabek, but it's nice to see both coming all the way back from Tommy John surgery.
Smoak or Alvarez?
Andrew Brackman's Control Woes: Still recovering from TJ surgery, or an ominous red flag?
Some of each.
Kiker or Beavan?
Kelly or Hagadone?
Is Martin Perez considered a top of the rotation type prospect?
Billy Martin or John McGraw?
McGraw, of course.
Heyward or Stanton?
Zach Von Rosenburg or Cain? (Pirates draftees)
Moustakas still considered a top prospect?
Sure. Still very young, still very talented, Wilmington isn't the easiest place to hit so I'll cut him some slack.
Higher ceiling: Heathcott or Jackson?
Ethan Martin or Christian Friedrich?
Was that list of 5 players earlier your mid-season top 5?
Yes, my personal Top 5, not BA's.
How good is Alex Avila?
Solid bat, not totally sold on him as a catcher either.
hobgood or jacob turner
Justin Upton or Evan Longoria
Chamberlain or Buchholz now? Who did you have back then?
I've been pretty consistent saying Buchholz, because of questions over whether Chamberlain would hold up over the long term. I'll stick with Buchholz, just because I have for so long.
frozen or thinking?
Dealing with four kids and a phone call from my wife.
What do you think of Dee Gordon? He seems to be showing a lot of potential and could replace Furcal when that contract is up in 2 years.
Very interesting prospect. Nice fourth-round pick for the Dodgers last year. I hadn't even heard of him before they picked him.
Does Matt Moore have ace potential?
Still early, but he has that kind of upside.
T or F - 2011 Pirates outfield is Tabata, McCutchen, and Milledge
False. I'm not believing in Milledge.
ETA for Jesus Montero? Posada's contract the only real stumbling block?
Hard to say, because Montero certainly isn't ready to catch in the big leagues. And he may never be. He can really hit though.
Wallace, Jones, and Kozma for Halladay. Who says no?
Jays. They need at least a little more than that.
jordan walden or casey kelly?
5 years from now - Hicks or Revere?
Grover Cleveland Alexander or Christy Mathewson?
If you were Mike Rizzo, who would you rather trade away,Dunn or Willingham? Or is the answer "whoever brings a better haul"? Which one gets you more in return?
"Whoever brings a better haul," which is likely Dunn.
I enjoyed the extended lightning round today. See you again next week.
