Chat with Jemele Hill

Buzzmaster
  (12:14 PM)

Jemele will be here momentarily! Keep your questions coming!

Jemele Hill
  (12:14 PM)

Sorry guys for being tardy. Let's chat it up. Any thoughts on last night's Entourage premiere?

Mike (Exton)

Jemele, I really enjoy your writings. As a white man, you allow me to see things through the eyes of African Americans and females...something that I tend not to do often. You're a good writer and enjoy your articles

Jemele Hill
  (12:15 PM)

Thank you. 'Preciate it.

Derrick (N.Y.)

Hello Ms.Hill...my question to you is,could you please explain to me why Skip is si obsessed with LeBron...it seems to be personal.Did something happen between them that we don't know about?

Jemele Hill
  (12:17 PM)

Skip isn't "obsessed." He likes LeBron as a person and thinks he has great character. But when you criticize someone as adored as LeBron, people tend to call you a "hater," etc. He thinks LeBron got a little full of himself and isn't as developed as a player as he should be. You can't say those observations are wrong.

Will J (Portland, OR)

Jemele, is Skip the same way off the air as he is on it? Or is that more of an act (ratings)?

Jemele Hill
  (12:18 PM)

Skip does not "act." Is he banging on tables off-air? No. But he doesn't just say things to get ppl riled up. Again, if you think about what he's saying, it's really not that crazy. Ppl just overreact to his opinions because of the way he delivers them.

Jason (Orlando)

What is your lasting memory of Steve McNair?

Jemele Hill
  (12:19 PM)

I'll remember him as a tough player, and a decent person. I know the way his life ended will be the defining moment for a lot of people. Just not me.

Pinero (Miami)

Loved your article on the free pass in sports

Jemele Hill
  (12:19 PM)

Thanks!

Joe (Boston)

Is Nike confiscating those tapes more proof of LeBron being a baby or simply Nike protecting their prize?

Jemele Hill
  (12:20 PM)

I'd put this one mostly on LeBron. Remember, according to the videographer, he saw LeBron summon someone from Nike and next thing you know, the tape is confiscated. Think the King's pride was wounded.

Jason (Boston)

Do you think Vince being alone at the end of the Entourage Premiere is a sign of future animosity between Vince/Eric and/or Vince/Turtle? I can't wait for this season!

Jemele Hill
  (12:22 PM)

The characters on Entourage are evolving, and I like that. Entourage is just the male version of Sex and the City. And if you watched the final season of S

Demetric (Orlando)

You were a BIG critic of Mike Vick in past threads, I'm just wondering where is your stance of his return to the NFL?

Jemele Hill
  (12:23 PM)

MV deserves another chance. He shouldn't receive any extra suspension time. Think he's been punished enough. He lost his entire income -- which totals more than $100 million. Spent two years in jail. He's paid his debt to society.

Jamesa (Ottawa)

Jemele, as a black female writer, do you feel the need to bring race and sex to the forefront of your articles or do you try not to?

Jemele Hill
  (12:24 PM)

I just try to be me. If I feel passionately about a racial issue, I write it. If I don't, I don't. When ESPN hired me, nowhere in the fine print did it say I must write about race.

VThrilla (NJ)

Long time twitterer, first time chatter. Has the MLB All-Star game run it's course? What should be done to make it a little more exciting? Quite frankly I'd be content with just the HR Derby, a Skills competition, and then send everyone home.

Jemele Hill
  (12:26 PM)

Hey! One of my favorite Twitter buddies. The HR Derby has successfully overshadowed AS weekend. The game is worthless and the fact that it has any bearing on home-field for the World Series is just dumb. When I was a kid, I watched the AS game like it was life or death. But interleague play has taken away all the luster. We can see those NL-AL matchups throughout the season, so I don't get as excited if I see Albert Pujols vs. Josh Beckett. Also, they don't play the star players long enough and most of the managers manage the game so no one gets hurt. If they don't care, why should I?

Chris Jordan (Las Vegas)

Who'll win the Home Run Derby? Too easy to pick Albert Pujols? How about Howard, Fielder or Mauer?

Jemele Hill
  (12:28 PM)

I'm going to go with Howard, even though Pujols is sort of obvious. Pujols will have the crowd behind him.

Jeff (Pittsburgh)

How has Lebron's reputation changed in the past months from the non-handshake to this recent dunk scandal?

Jemele Hill
  (12:33 PM)

As I wrote in my column on Page 2 the other day, LeBron is becoming LeBaby. Look, LeBron has been in the national spotlight since he was in puberty. His high school graduation gift was a $100 million contract from Nike and international stardom. When you've had people catering to you for that long, it's almost impossible not to think that you're the man. I could have overlooked the handshake incident if, the next day, LeBron gave us a mea culpa. Instead, his defense of his behavior was even more arrogant than the act itself. I was cool with the MVP shirt, but what's up with that "Check My Stats" shirt? Then this dunk incident...Also, it bothers me that LeBron seems to remind Cleveland fans routinely that they should feel blessed just to be in his presence. His infatuation with NY communicates to Clevelanders that the city nor their people are good enough to be in the presence of the king.

Adam B. (Apple Valley, MN)

I jumped all over LeBron after the tape incident too. But now I'm wondering if he didn't have the tapes snatched so he and NIKE could make a commercial. Your thoughts?

Jemele Hill
  (12:34 PM)

Can't see that happening. Think Nike burned that tape as soon as they confiscated it.

Chris Jordan (Las Vegas)

Midseason prediction Jemele ... who are your participants for the World Series. ( And Detroit doesn't count ;-) )

Jemele Hill
  (12:34 PM)

Red Sox-Dodgers. It will be annoying, but highly entertaining. Manny's gonna take a few batteries upside the head upon his return to Fenway.

Terry (Atlanta)

Should the All Star game count for home field advantage in the World Series or should the team with the better record get home field?

Jemele Hill
  (12:37 PM)

The team with the better record should get the home field. That the AS game factors into the equation is ridiculous. You should reward the teams that played well over the course of 162 games.

eric (new york)

do you still think the holocaust is something to joke about? Since you love talking about race so much, how about addressing the extreme double standard for racist behavior in this country? It was you who wanted imus fired immediately for his comments on the rutgers basketball team. I wrote you before but you never responded(surprise), but based on your own logic in that instance you shouldn't have a job and you shouldn't be having this chat right now. But I forgot, racism is only a 1 way street right?

Jemele Hill
  (12:39 PM)

1. I never joked about The Holocaust.2. Extreme? Think you're overstating that a bit.3. Imus' has a consistent history of denigrating women and minorites, and that's what I based my opinion on -- not just 1 incident. 4. Sorry, that's what happens when you have 10,000 emails in your inbox.5. Racism is a 10-lane highway. You happy?

Kevin (Odenville, AL)

Sox fans don't throw batteries Jemele, only Phillies fans.As I posed eariler, what job in America can you get back after lying to your boss AND the owner of the company ? There isn't one, so Vick does not "deserve" anything other than what he's getting right now which is unemployment.

Jemele Hill
  (12:40 PM)

Playing in the NFL is not the same as working at Innotech (might have spelled that wrong and yes, that was a reference to Office Space). It's a specialized league, where a special skill set is required. If Vick can play, the market should decide his fate.Even if you wanted to stick to the real world, if you were the best programmer that Microsoft, and you made them millions of dollars, you think they wouldn't give you another chance?

Jason (Boston)

Lloyd is going to flourish so much as an agent he will rival Ari in season 7!

Jemele Hill
  (12:43 PM)

I'm loving the conflict between those two and I could see it carrying this season the same way Vince's fall and tension w/ E carried the last season. But for some reason, I don't see Lloyd becoming an agent and Ari's rival. I see those two continuing as a team. I also see Ari finally admitting that Lloyd is his best friend.

jamel (st louis)

I wanted to say that I enjoy your comments and writings for ESPN, question do u think Allen Iverson will ever win a championship?

Jemele Hill
  (12:47 PM)

This is really painful for me to say, because for years, I've been a complete AI apologist. But it took him playing for my hometown team to see that guy means well, but he's his own worst enemy. When he got to Detroit -- arguably the best collection of players he's ever been with -- Iverson said he'd do whatever it took to win a championship. But he's completely delusional about the erosion of his skills. He can no longer score in traffic the way he used to. He tries on defense and plays the passing lanes well, but he's overall a liability. He absolutely refuses to sacrifice his own game for the betterment of the team. As soon as he was asked to come off the bench, he mailed it in. I believe he was hurt, but not to the degree they made it seem. He didn't want to play because he didn't want to come off the bench.AI is over, and AI is selfish. I really believes he means it when he says he'd rather retire than come off the bench. With that attitude, it's no wonder he's never won a championship. Great scorer, not a good teammate.

Joe (NY)

What about you calling for the heads of the Duke lacrosse players? That ws no "consistent history" of degrading women, was it?

Jemele Hill
  (12:48 PM)

Never called for their heads. Clearly, you didn't read this column of mine:http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hill/070412

Brian (Seattle)

Your writing was atrocious for the State News. How did you ever get on ESPN? Makes me lose respect for the worldwide leader.

Jemele Hill
  (12:48 PM)

And yet you're chatting with me anyway!

Kevin (Detroit)

Jemele, my ex girlfriend looks just like you. Do you have any kids in the DC area? On a real note, what do you think about the new look Pistons? People around the water cooler thinks that this next year will be worse than the last.

Jemele Hill
  (12:51 PM)

What am I, Shawn Kemp? No, I don't have kids and I never dated anyone named Kevin. As for the Pistons, it's going to take them a couple seasons before they get back into the discussion as a threat to win the East. I'm not a fan of their recent coaching selection. Michael Curry's inexperience was supposedly the problem and they go right back out and pick another inexperienced coach. And it was the coach who runs Cleveland's "offense." Considering Cleveland's offense was LBJ over-dribbling or driving to the basket and everyone else standing around, I'm not impressed.

Vince (Alabama)

Jemele how do you feel about Michigan chances in the Big Ten this year. Can u give a win estimate?

Jemele Hill
  (12:53 PM)

I went to Michigan State, so selfishly I hope Michigan's 2009 is like its 2008.

StupidDopeMoves (Chicago)

So with the tragic passing of McNair and Gatti, what are the odds that athletes tighten up a bit? No mistresses, no alleged fits of abusive behavior, etc.? I'm not terribly sure it changes anything.

Jemele Hill
  (12:55 PM)

Did athletes "tighten up" after Kobe? No.Did politicians "tighten up" after Monica Lewinsky? No. Money and power corrupts and while I'm not condoning extramarrital behavior, the reality is that "side pieces" are deeply immersed in sports culture.

msuttonphoto (VA)

Jemele, What do u think of Jason Whitlock's article on Serena Williams' eat'n her way out of being the GREATEST Women's Tennis player ever? Is he on point with the comments?

Jemele Hill
  (12:58 PM)

I agree with the basic tenet of Whitlock's article, which is that Serena is a bit of an underachiever. As of now, I think she's the third-best player in women's tennis history -- behind Martina and Steffi. She's so powerful and athletic that if she were completely focused on tennis, she could be the greatest ever. But the truth is that Serena has gone through long periods where she's completely ignored tennis, or been hurt. I like that her and Venus have used tennis to galvanize their other interests, but it's hurt them to some degree. Serena can't complain about her ranking when she basically only shows up for the majors.

Eli (Chicago)

Off the topic of sports, what are your top 5 hip hop albums of all time?

Jemele Hill
  (1:01 PM)

How about I just go with my favorite 5 hip hop albums? They are:De La Soul's, "Stakes Is High." Biggie's, "Ready To Die."Pac's, "All Eyez on Me."The Roots, "Do You Want More?"Tribe Called Quest's, "Midnight Marauders."If I'm stranded on a desert island, I'm taking these 5 with me.

Jemele Hill
  (1:02 PM)

And speaking of hip-hop, if you're a real head and you're looking for something new...check out my boys, Stoopz N Breeze. Great album. You can also get it on iTunes.http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/stoopznbreeze

Bobby (Philadelphia)

Will halladay be traded and what team will be traded to?

Jemele Hill
  (1:04 PM)

Would like to see him go to Philly (and I'm not just saying that because you're from there.)Philly is a pitcher away from repeating. They've got the young talent in the farm system. Some money will be freed up with Myers and Eaton coming off the books. They should make a move for Halladay. Be tough to beat that guy in a 7-gamer.

Josh (Knoxville, TN)

If you weren't a writer, what would you do for a living?

Jemele Hill
  (1:05 PM)

That's a great question. Maybe a detective? I'm horribly addicted to crime shows. First 48 is my favorite.

Jemele Hill
  (1:05 PM)

Getting back to that hip-hop question, I'm going to make an amendment:Think I'm going to sub-out Tribe Called Quest for Mos Def's Black on Both Sides...

Jemele Hill
  (1:07 PM)

Alright people, I got 4 more minutes. Started late and wanted to give you an hour! Let's go!

Nick (Fort Campbell, KY)

How do you feel the addition of Wallace to the Celtics improves their chance this upcoming season?

Jemele Hill
  (1:09 PM)

Think he's got the perfect role. He'll come off the bench and face an average defender. He'll spread the floor. He'll be re-energized because he's in a winning situation and KG is a strong leader. I like Boston to win the East. Then again, I liked them before the move for Rasheed. As long as they're healthy, they should win it.

Jason Roberts (Sherman Oaks, CA)

Besides First 48, are there any other shows you watch when you're in a "writers bloc" mode?

Jemele Hill
  (1:10 PM)

Young

Gray (Chicago)

You still back the 1991 Bad Boys for walking off the court vs. Chicago with time left on the clock, but yet to rip LeBron for not congratulating Orlando?

Jemele Hill
  (1:11 PM)

Actually, I backed the Pistons tongue-in-cheek. What they did was totally small time. Really loved the fact that Dumars didn't follow suit.

Jemele Hill
  (1:12 PM)

Sorry everyone, my time is up. Enjoyed chatting with you. Follow me on Twitter @jemelehill, or on Facebook. I've got an open friend policy!
