Chat with Terry Blount

Buzzmaster
  (2:06 PM)

Terry is on his way.

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

Sorry I'm late guys. A lot going on, as all of you know. But I'll go long to make up for it. So what's your take on the latest news from yesterday?

Chad (Atlanta)

Is NASCAR out to try to make an example out of Jeremy Mayfield and do you think he will ever race again?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

I don't think Mayfield will race again and I don't think NASCAR is out to make an example of him. They tested him twice and he failed both times. It's as simple as that.

Jerry (Tampa, FL)

Mayfield certainly has some gusto to claim NASCAR paid his stepmother off. At first, I wanted to believe the guy, because I thought anyone driving in Cup isn't stupid enough to do drugs, but I'd say this is the nail in the coffin for his racing career.

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

I don'tknow what Jeremy did or didn't do, but after covering sports for 30 years, I never am surprised now about the drug problem and how it infects every aspects of society.

Matt (Ogdensburg New Jersey)

hey terry i was wonderng considering jr would have had two top 10's with mcgrew so far if it wasnt for him getting wrecked at sonoma and the rain at new hampshire and how much more consistent jr has been do u thingk lance mcgrew has the job sealed up for next year

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

I don't think any of that's bene decided yet. I know McGrew truly believes the team is on te verge of some top runs very soon. We'll see.

Jack (Brooklyn, NY)

Mayfield accused his stepmother of shooting and killing his father. Do you have any knowledge of the circumstances of Mayfield's father's death?

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

Terry Mayfield's death wad ruled a suicide by law enforcement experts.

Benjamin (Atlanta)

Who are your top 5 going into this weekend and give me two dark horses...thanks

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

No Cup race this weekend, but my five for Indy are JJ, Gordon, Martin, Stewart and Hamlin. My darkhorses would be Vickers and Montoya.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Hey Terry, thanks for working in the chat amidst all the news. Is Mayfield's case still going to trial after this latest test?????

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

Yes, yesterday's news makes no change in Mayfield's lawsuit, but it could reverse the injunction.

Mike (Atlanta)

Do you think the way Mayfield has handled the latest developments has hurt him? I think he's only making himself look more like has on drugs

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

I think it probably would have been better for him to remain silent and let the process go through his attorneys

Erik (Richland WA)

how do we know that this couldn't be another "false" positive from his use of adderal and clariton

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

If it is, he still should be suspended for being naive enough to do that again. And it will still mean it could be impaired on the track

Rich (Clearwater)

TB, is Kyle Busch's lack of performance in Sprint Cup due to overwork (racing in all the different series) and over partying (not sure I blame him looking at Samantha) or is it something the Gibbs team is missing on the COT?

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

I truly believe it hurts him to race full time in the NW Series and not devote his full attention to Cup. Others disagree, including my buddy and ESPN colleague Boris Said.

Brooke (Quincy, MA)

when will the 2010 nascar schedule be out and do you expect many changes?

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

I don't expect any major changes. It probably will come out in late August or early Sept.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Hey Terry, anything new on the Harvick front??? We peppered Newt to death with questions about this yesterday.

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

Nothing new except Childress saying both KH and Shell are under contact through 2010 and both would be staying put. We'll see. JGR said the same thing last year about Tony Stewart.

Matt (Ogdensburg New Jersey)

speaking of 2010 what rule changes do you expect for next season i mean there has got to be at least one especially with the chase format

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

No rules changes are planned, but we probably will see one if Martin and Kyle fail to make the Chase while winning the most races.

Brad (Greensbor, NC)

Terry, I have a question about JR. I see his teammates running up front all the time, and winning races, and I am not up on the set up of cars and what effect it has, but is Jr's driving style sooo different he cant find a sent up that suits him from a car in that organization...

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

Jr does have a different driving style in that he loves to race up high next to the wall. That is tougher to do in this car because it's harder to turn to leaves a bigger change of brushing into the wall.

Greg (New York)

Is Nascar out to get J. M. ?

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

Why would they be? He's everything they love to promote, and single-team owner who is trying to make it work on a small budget.

joe (Missoula, Mt )

Terry any chance of seeing Harvick in the fourth car for Gibbs next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

There's a chance, but Childress appears determined to hold Harvick to his contract.

Mike (Atlanta)

speaking of shrub, what do you expect out of him next weekend? Indy has arguably been his worst track? Will i get to see him fall out of chase eligibility?

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

That's the prvailing logic, but Toyota doesn't want to add teams. They need to lose one to add one, and Red Bull might be the one.

Greg (New York)

But can Nascar be trying to cover that they are wrong?

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

That's a huge assumption, It would mean NASCAR and Aegis Lab deliberately falsified drug tests, a very serious crime. I'm not buying it.

Jeff (Maryland)

Do you think Yates will release both drivers at the end of the year? Who gets hired first? Where?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

I think Yates has more problems than the drivers, but a lot of this depends on what Roush does with his fifth driver.

Ed (Fort Worth)

Any hope on a real feud breaking out in NASCAR between JJ and Kurt? NASCAR seems to have forgotten how fun it was to watch Dale and Darrell, Rusty and Dale etc go at it.

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

JJ's not really the feuding type. I doubt it will get too heated in the long run.

The Jesser (KC)

Did you hear Mayfield's interview last night on Sirius radio? He said that he had 16 negative drug tests to combat NASCAR's two positives. Is that pure bull or the real deal?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

Who's knows, but it sounds a little odd.

CRISSY (CORINNA,MAINE)

DO YOU THINK KASEY KAHNE WILL MAKE THE CHASE AND WILL HE STAY AT RPM

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

His chances of making the Chase are looking better each week with the new Dodge engine. I think Kasey would leave RPM is he thought he could get out of his contract.

Billy (TN)

Mr. Blount, have you been told that RPM will use the new engine in Kasey Kahne's car the rest of the year? Will they be putting it in his team members cars? Thanks for the weekly info.

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

I don't think they have enough of them to use them for everybody yet. But that's the goal.

Mitch (Rochester, NY)

If Keselowski is the best option for a team, do you think that Regan Smith might be second?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

Not if Harvick is available, which would move Brad to No. 2.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

Hey Terry, Do you think Juan Pablo will make The Chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

If I had to guess today I would say yes.

Darryl (Maryland.)

Hey Terry, do you think Kyle Busch will end up falling out of the chase when we get to Richmond?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

I still expect Kyle to make it because he is so talented that he's bound to post a few top 5s in the next seven races.

zkariya (rochester,mn)

do you think that kevin harvick will stay at rcr next year

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

Only if they make it stick to his contract.

Steve (TN)

considering the ages of MM, Jr., JJ and JG at Hendrick, wouldn't Rick be crazy to let BK slip through his hands? Hendrick is going to need young blood sooner rather than later.

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Rick definitely wants to keep Brad, but he needs a place to put him and sponsor willing to step up.

Ed (Fort Worth)

Is NASCAR going to allow for spring modifications at Indy, or are they pretty confident in the compound Goodyear is bringing to the track? Most reports I've seen say the drivers are happy, but that's in testing conditions, not with the whole pack on the track.

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

Everyone seems convinced the tire problem is solved and no other changes are necessary. Let's hope they're right.

Eric (VA)

Terry, Does NASCAR have any plans to try to regulate owners expanding through other teams, for example, Hendrick only "owns" 4 cars, but supplies SHR and maybe Redbull soon. Same with Rousch who seems to have a big hand in what Yates does. This just seems like these top teams still having more than four teams even though on paper that's all it says they have.

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

These affliations have made the entire four-car rule a joke. But I don't think NASCAR has any plans to try and restrict it.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

Bold prediciton: Harvick to Stewart Haas, Brad Tony Sr. to Childress. Bowyer in the 29, Brad in the 33. What do you think?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Wow. That's quite a prediction. A lot has to happen for that to play out. A lot depends on whether Stewart has sponsorship for a third car.

Racefan (KY)

Hey Terry, a lot was mad about Danica stopping by SHR, but what about Gibbs and any other shops we may not know about?

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

I hear she also made an appearance at JGR. For Danica, it's all part of the game to get the best contact possible wherever she lands.

Eric (VA)

So how do you think Hedrick would feel if Tony wins the championship over Jimmie Johnson? Does he view it as his team winning?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

No, he would not view it that way. But leasing engines and chassis is big money for his organization and helps make up for what he's losing in GM support.

Derek (AL)

Terry, Why do you think JPM could be successful at the Brickyard? does the track favor his driving style?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

It's flat with tight turns, so it more like a road course, and that helps him. But winning their in the Indy 500 has little bearing on how to race in a stock car.

TC (Ky)

Hey Terry, do you think Stewart gets tired of all the "5th and 6th Hendrick cars?"

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

Not as long as he keeps winning. They can call it whatever they want.

Stu (Madison, Va.)

If you can only go to one race during the chase, which one would you choose (not Talladega)?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

Homestead if the championship is still on the line.

Mary (NC)

Despite Kyle's Busch talent, do you think he will ever become the champion? His attitude and maturity are definitely in the way.

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Yes, I do belive Kyle will win a title or two in Cup. He's still very young. He will mature as he goes. Tony is a good example of this.

Tyler (PA)

Hi Terry. It seems like everyone these days is blaming Dale Jr's performance for NASCAR's decline. This wasn't the case in 05 and 07 when he missed the chase. I just think it's time for everyone to admit that Jr is not that great of a driver and get over it. The COT, economy and bad racing are behind the decline, not Jr.

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

Jr being bad definitely hurts, but the economy is the main thing. Racing is getting much better with the new restart rule.

Saul (San Diego)

Is K Busch getting moving into the danger zone of Overstaying his Welcome with JG Racing?

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

Not even close. He's still the lead horse in that stable, even if he is a little untamed.

joe (Missoula, Mt )

Terry, I do believe all the Busch haters will be quite sad this year when Addington and Busch quite playing possum and start having some good luck, when the chase begins.

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

If they are playing possum they deserve an Academy Award.

Scott (AK)

Talk about filling stereotypes, what's your take on the Mayfield methamphetamine story?

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

I wrote my take today in my column. Really, the whole thing is very sad and we all wish it would go OK. Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen.

joe (Missoula, Mt )

Come one Terry you don't go from winning eight races in one year to not making the chase next year, we all know that.

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

I didn't say he isn't going to make the Chase, but he isn't sandbagging. You don't sandbag and put yourself in position to possibly miss the playoff.

VJ (San Diego)

Do you think that Teresa was right in the WSJ when she said Dale needs to decide if he wants to be a media star like Paris Hilton or a race car driver like Kyle Busch?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

That's not what she said. And no, I don't think she was right.

Caleb (Kentucky)

What's the latest on the Kesolowski situation

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Nothing new from two days ago, but it doesn't help him in Harvick becomes a silly season player.

Ted (Oh)

Whos on Nascar Now today?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Angelique Chengelis I believe.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

Kyle Busch is a full race worth of points ahead of Carl in the Nationwide Series. Do you see him taking a race off soon to focus on Cup? As a president, or at least client of the Rowdy Nation, I say he doesn't need to. I say go for both. He does seem like he is driving tired though. So does Carl.

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

They aren't skipping in NW events. But I wish both of them would quite racing full time in that series.

Tyler (PA)

I must be the only one that doesn't mind Kyle Busch. Weren't the fans pleading for the drivers to show some emotions in front of the camera? I think he deserves a lot more respect than he gets because he has the performance to back it up(except recently)

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

I agree that all of Kyle's antics and good for spicing things up. But he sometimes lets his emotions affect his performance.

kevin (new jersey)

Terry do you get to vote for the hall of fame?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

No. ESPN has one vote and it goes to Dr. Jerry Punch. NASCAR couldn't have picked a better guy.

Saul (San Diego)

Kyle is young, can you predict what age he may mature, if you will.

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

85. I kid, I kid. Who knows? I think all us get a little wiser as each day passes.

Saul (San Diego)

If you had to start a 4 car team, with current drivers, who would you pick.

Terry Blount
  (3:02 PM)

JJ, Stewart, Edwards and Kahne.

mitch (iowa)

Who will drive the 02 car for jgr this year?

Terry Blount
  (3:03 PM)

Maybe Gilliland.

Matt (Columbia, SC)

Here's how silly season is going to fall out:Harvick to the #4 Shell-Pennzoil car at SHR; Keselowski to the #82 Red Bull car; Scott Speed to a full-time NNS ride at JRM or KHI; McMurray to the #29 Irwin car at RCR; David Ragan to Yates; Danica Patrick to the #6 car at RoushPut it in the bank.

Terry Blount
  (3:05 PM)

My goodness. Now that's some serious predicting. If all this happens, can you give me some wagering advice in Vegas?

Matt (Orlando)

Currently out of everyone who's in the chase, is there one person you don't think will continue to stay in the next few weeks, or someone that could potentially kick a driver out of chase contention?

Terry Blount
  (3:06 PM)

I think Kenseth is in trouble because the Fords aren't running well. But the odd thing is it's another Ford driver (Biffle) who is 13th.

Tom (ky)

Hey Terry, why no love for JG with starting a team? Is it too close to the end for him.

Terry Blount
  (3:07 PM)

That's the point. Plus, there are some question about his back.

Chris (Richmond (VA))

How many present drivers get into the NASCAR Hall of Fame: I count five (possibly). Gordon, Johnson, Stewart, Martin, and Kennseth (?)

Terry Blount
  (3:09 PM)

Not sure about Kenseth. And impossible to say on young guys like Kyle and Logano.

carl (north carolina)

is it true that jeff gordon owns jimmy johnson's car

Terry Blount
  (3:10 PM)

Officially yes. His name is listed as the owner. But it's really a Hendick car.

Shawn (Gastonia, NC)

Bill Elliott is a current driver, lock for the Hall of Fame.

Terry Blount
  (3:11 PM)

Forgot about Awesome Bill from Dawsonville. Absolutely he will make it in a some point.

Terry Blount
  (3:11 PM)

I'm out folks. Hope everyone has a great weekend. Take care. Peace.
