Good morning gang! We're back again for more fantasy baseball goodness... Red Sox dealing, Manny being Manny and Berkman barely able to walk... it's all on tap for the next hour. Got my second cup of coffee in hand, so who's on first?
AJ. Good morning and thanks for the chat. Tell me I did correct in trading Damon for N. Morgan straight up cause I needed SB. I understand that Damon is the better player. But, I decided to use the trade for what you need strategy for once!
I think it's a great deal for you... not only are you getting those SB, but in overall value, Morgan is catching up to Damon big-time... Johnny Caveman isn't the runaway winner in overall fantasy value here to begin with.
any word on when Tillman will get the call ? and if so is he worth a flyer in a ten team head 2 head keeper ? thanks
No "official" word, but I have to believe he'll be up in time for the KC series - Monday or Tuesday.
Drop Rick Porcello and pick up Clay B. or keep Porcello?
I'd keep Porcello. Both are playing for teams likely to earn them victories... but I think Red Sox aren't going to lean on Clay as much as Tigers are with Rick.
Does the the Cardinals trading away Duncan mean that Ludwick will be staying in Saint Louis?
Not necessarily... I'm not a St. Louis fan, but everything I've read points to the Cards organization not liking Duncan being with the team, and possibly there being a "hidden agenda" with this deal. They're not done making moves yet.
B.J. Upton or Bourn with better numbers for the rest of the year? Bourn really looks like the much better player...can't believe I am saying that.
I agree it is shocking. I just ran my new numbers this morning to find Bourn at No. 12 among hitters. Upton is at 22. I don't know if I'd say "much better" but indeed better.
Did you see Lance Berkman pinch hit last night? The guy was in serious pain....Any idea on how serious this injury is/ how much time will be missed?
I think he tries to pinch-hit through it... but it's clear he can't be starting right now. He had an MRI earlier this week, so if it were super-serious, they'd have already DL'd him I believe.
Deep league, I need a roster spot in a dynasty league...do I drop Suppan or Owings?
Six of one, half of the other... I'd keep Owings, if only for the chance that they convert him to OF in the off-season.
Thoughts on Josh Willingham? Had a nice night but will he keep this up the rest of the way?
Yes and no... I think he can keep it up, but I also think he's headed elsewhere by the July 31 deadline. If it's Philly where he ends up, then he's just a PH off the bench, so his production and PT will be cut severely.
How bad is Franklin G. injury will Seatle bench for a while?
He's fine, thankfully... fully expect to see him in the OF, or at the very least as DH today.
Rasmus or C. Hart rest of season?
If no trades, Rasmus. But I think both are possibilities to be moved... and it can only help Hart.
What about McCutchen in your OOTB? Wheres the love AJ?
Word count my friend... blame it on the word count.
Start Kazmir today against CWS and Buerhle?
No chance. It was all I could do not to rank him dead last in my Daily Notes...
Pearce over Milledge? What gives? Those pirates sure are wacky!
It's just a stop-gap call up b/c Pearce can play 1B. Assuming they don't make another deal with Sanchez, they'll probably call up Milledge over the weekend and try Garret at 1B.
Concerned about Inge?
Totally. That knee is not getting better, and he says he's going to try and play through the pain b/c a DL-stint without surgery wouldn't help.
Speaking of Pirates, how long does Garret Jones' streak last? I want to ride it for as long as possible.
It's not that valuable a streak, though. With that many HRs, he should be getting far more run production, and instead he's got the lowest percentage of RP of any player with 5 or more HRs, relatively speaking.
Montero has been crazy recently. Would you take him over Inge for the next few weeks now that Inge is experiencing "excruciating pain"?
Absolutely - talk about a hidden gem.
Is Jusin Smoak better than Chris Davis?
Don't know if "better" is the word, but from a fantasy standpoint, the Rangers already know what they have in Davis. It makes more sense to call Smoak up at the next opportunity so they can better prepare for the future with an accurate assessment.
according to your value piece is now about the time I give up on the ratio stats (avg, era, whip, etc.) and focus more on steals, HR's, K's?
It's not that you give up on them... the value piece wasn't a strategy guide, rather it was an explanation of why pitchers aren't ranked as high in rankings at this time of the year. If you're 100 HRs down and only .05 back in ERA, you put your efforts towards the ERA.
Jorge De La Rosa is quietly streaking. No, not that streaking! I mean he's won 7 of his last 8 decisions. Is he a reliable fantasy option going forward?
He's surged immensely over that stretch and just outside my Top 50, but I'm still not sold. The offense will give him plenty of run support, but there are a lot of better, safer options out there.
Bruce Bochy said of Jurrjens- "He's one of the best pitchers in the league and probably the Braves' best pitcher", want to comment?
Fifth in ERA, kind of backs up Bochy's point of view, though for fantasy purposes, I like Javy better.
AJ, I'm curious, what value do you have Holliday at currently? Does his recent hot streak help his "momentum" value?
Right now he's sitting steady at No. 40. He's righted the ship... now let's see if he points it in the right direction.
If De La Rosa is in your top 60, doesn't that make him a #5 SP in a 12-team mixed? Definitely a guy you use?
Use? Yes. Reliable - which was the question... not so much for me.
Morning AJ, great chat. What are your thoughts on Clint Barmes? He is quietly putting together a really solid season for a SS and the rockies keep playing good ball. I could possibly keep him as a 25th rounder next season, think he can keep this up?
Barmes is exactly the kind of late-round pick you need to have a successful season. I don't think he's necessarily a keeper, because he's one of those "always slips through the cracks" guys... but for a 25th rounder. Why not? I think he slides a bit though over the rest of the season...
What's the deal with Jordan Z.? Should I drop him?
Sore during his "off-day" session, so the team decided to DL him to be safe. It's not like the Nats are going anywhere... Sounds like he'll make one rehab start and be back when the DL clock runs out. I'd hang tight.
Love the chat, AJ. Not sure I was impressed with Buchholz last night?too many pitches, lost the break on his curve?but I have a chance for him if I waive Meche (no open DL spots). Should I do it?
Why not? Clay's got plenty of potential - it's just a matter of opportunity and whether he gets moved in a deal, or given a chance to contribute regularly if not.
Is Nyjer for real, or is he just on a hot streak? He gets caught SO often!
The green light isn't going anywhere... as long as CS don't count against you, I wouldn't worry about it at all.
Should i move Zobrist for the "right" package or will he keep it up?
Those questions shouldn't have anything to do with each other... you should always make a deal if it's "right"... Once you start putting players off-limits, you're letting emotion take over. And I do think Ben is trending downwards...
In today's Out of the Box, by Canadian pitcher, did you mean Erick Bedard, because I dont see Halladay going the Rays or the Yankees
You saw right through my clever ambiguity, didn't you?
You mentioned the Cards having a hidden agenda with their Lugo pickup... can you give any more details? We've already got Ryan and Barden, so was it a payroll dump? Losing Chris Duncan can't have saved that much money right?
Just a lot of grief, if you read the St. Louis papers, with Daddy Duncan being the pitching coach and any criticism directed at Chris setting him off. This has to make things calmer (longterm) as the pennant race heats up.
Does Crawford have a chance at 100 Steals?
I think 80 is a more reasonable projection... but hey, he will get on base enough times to do it, technically speaking.
AJ, is a 30 save deficit too much to make up with three good closers (Francisco, Soria, and Soriano)?
Probably - what do we have 9 weeks left? So you have to make up 3-4 saves a week? If - IF - each closer gets 2 a week, that's 6 total. I assume the guy you're catching has at least two closers, so he gets 4 a week. Longshot at best.
Does the fact that the Mets are terrible chance the chances that they bring back their injured stars? Since they are falling further out of the race every day, what's the point of them bringing back Reyes, Beltran, and Delgado?
In the Mets' case, I think they need to bring them back, if only to give the fans a reason to have optimism for next season --- obviously, they're not going to rush them - but even a few weeks of the "full lineup" would likely do wonders for morale headed into a long off-season.
Pick one for the rest of the way: Brett Anderson, Jordan Zimmerman, Brad Bergesen.
I've been touting Anderson for a few weeks now, so I'll stick with him... especially with Zimm sure to be on a stricter IP count going forward.
what's more valuable to your fantasy team: Longoria or a can of tuna?
Starkist or Chicken of the Sea?
Drew or J.Lopez @ MI for the rest of the year?
I'm going to say Drew, but I couldn't blame folks who want to go the other way on this one...
Martin Prado or JJ Hardy at MI for thr rest of the year?
I so rarely choose JJ in any of these either/or questions, and I ain't gonna start now.
Chicken of the Sea is tuna?
Why do experts choose not to acknowledge the fact that Tejada's having a very good season. He's definitely a top-7 shortstop, right?
I think you're creating your own illusion of snubbery here... Miguel is in my Top 40 hitters - hardly lack of acknowledgment on my end.
follow up on (silly) Longoria question: How do you see his season playing out? Top 3 at his position?
Top 3? Tough. Top 5, sure. I still like Reynolds, and Wright (even in that dreadful lineup) and Chone and Mike Young.
Figgins and Young over A-Rod?
Not big on A-Rod, the average is hurting and Chone's SBs make a huge difference in terms of value.
AJ, have you seen my Choo?
Hey, he's matching Matt Holliday stat for stat -- not too shabby.
I'm a single short of the cycle. Is Mt. Vernon no longer an attraction? Would you rather Mccutchen over the Jay's OF?
You're talking to the guy who projected Vernon for a 25-25 season when we put out our All-Star Break rankings... I'm sticking with Wells.
Tommy Hanson. Real deal or rookie mirage?
AJ, don't go! Haren started the second half strong... sell high for a big bat or ride with him for glory?
In the immortal words of Charlie Steiner... "Follow me to FREEDOM!!!!"
Pick a side: Gallardo/F. Gutierrez or Nolasco/Ibanez
Ricky and Raul
This is way harder than i thought.
And on that comedy gem, we'll call it a day. Thanks to all who posed questions. Sorry we can't get to them all. We'll see you all the next time on Villa Alegre!
