Chat with Jason Grey

Jason Grey
  (3:02 PM)

Hey guys, lots of questions in the queue already so let's get to it...

kevin (san jose, ca)

j zimmerman just went on the dl and i already have the big unit and slowey taking up my two dl spots. is zimmerman worth a bench spot on my roster? im fighting to make the playoffs right now

Jason Grey
  (3:04 PM)

Randy has already said he's out likely 6-8 weeks, and the Nats plan on shutting down Zim for 3-4 weeks, and bringing him back in late August. Honestly, at this point, I'd probably dump Unit to create a spot on the DL

Matt V (Raleigh, NC)

is wandy rodriguez a keeper? or should i trade him while hes hot?

Jason Grey
  (3:05 PM)

Well, he's kind of been "hot" for two seasons now (with a little injury time thrown in), so I'd say he's a keeper. I'd always explore the market and see if he'd fetch a premium hitter just to see what's out there, but yeah, otherwise he's a keeper.

Chris (Latham NY)

Whats your feelings on Miguel Montero?

Jason Grey
  (3:07 PM)

I'll have more on this in a column next week, but it's not like this came out of nowhere. He's always been seen as a decent hitter, not so great defender that had a chance to hit well if given an extended opportunity. I think there are some concerns about how well he'd hold up in an everyday role, but he's a legit offensive catcher now that he's getting an extended run of playing time.

sean (ct)

better keeper j upton or webb

Jason Grey
  (3:07 PM)

Upton.

Playing for the Future (Loserville)

Jason, thanks for the help. Can you please rank these prospects in terms of keeper value: Viciedo, Arrieta, Tazawa and Carp

Jason Grey
  (3:08 PM)

Arrieta, Tazawa, Carp, Viciedo

Justin (Bellingham)

Jason, do you see Fowler developing some power over the next couple of years? He hasn't done much this year, but he did hit for a slight bit more in the minors and seems to have the size for it to develop over time (he's 6'4"). Thanks.

Jason Grey
  (3:10 PM)

I do, there is certainly room for him to develop more strength on his frame, and I think as he gets more and more comfortable with his swing from the left side (after just learning how to switch hit when he turned pro), the pop will come...might take a bit though.

Chris (NM)

Rank for the next 3 yrs thx: Hamilton, Holliday, J. Upton

Jason Grey
  (3:10 PM)

Upton, Hamilton, Holliday.

paul (ny)

hi jason. i was wondering which pitcher you see having a better professional career, jordan zimmerman or matt garza? what about for fantasy purposes? meaning TB gives garza a nice chance to win every time out. i get 10 pts for a win. basically if you had a choice in a long term keeper league, what guy are you taking? thanks

Jason Grey
  (3:11 PM)

I'll take Garza who still has some room to grow at age 25. We haven't seen his best yet. Especially if wins are that important in your league.

Matt M (Madison, WI)

Anything new on Juan Rivera's status?

Jason Grey
  (3:12 PM)

Running about 80%, not expected back before next week was last I heard.

Gray (Chicago)

Thoughts on Hector Rondon? Will we see him this season?

Jason Grey
  (3:16 PM)

I'm a big fan, and think he's one of those sleeper prospects that does not get as much hype as he should. It's possible we could see him this year but I think he's more of a sleeper for '10, Getting it done in the high minors at 21, great movement on the fastball, just needs more command of his slider and change..a lot to like.

Jimmy Woods (VA)

How do you feel about Garrett Jones......some think fluke...others say for real

Jason Grey
  (3:19 PM)

The rate of production now is obviously a fluke, but the answer to your question is sometimes in the middle. He'd been blocked in Minnesota for years, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that he can be a servicable starter. Look at a guy like Casey Blake, who had to wait until his late 20s to get a chance and break through. I do think that has the book gets out him he's going to have some problems handling the strike zone, but he can be useful in NL leagues.

Bill (PA)

What's your take on Arizona's Chris Young?

Jason Grey
  (3:22 PM)

For two seasons now he's had horrible issues with chasing bad pitches out of the zone. And when I mean issues, I mean ISSUES. I can't believe some of the stuff he offers at sometimes, and I think that's the entire root of his problems. It may be a pitch recognition thing, as even during his 2007 season he was known as more of a mistake hitter. At a minimum I think he needs time at AAA to clear his head and start from scratch.

Zed (Van Nuys)

N. Cruz, A. Jonez, F. Guiterrez: Who will put up the best second half stats:

Jason Grey
  (3:22 PM)

Cruz, even with the finger issue.

Amir (VA)

Chris Tillman worth a spot in a 10-teamer?

Jason Grey
  (3:23 PM)

In another division (say NL West), I'd say yes, but the AL East is tough to thrust him into and expect 10-team value right away. I'd probably go as far as 12 and 15-team mixed unless I really needed to get lucky, or spot Tillman in 10-team in what appear to be favorable matchups.

Kevin (Columbus)

How is a better keeper SS for the next five years, Tulowitzki, S. Drew or G. Beckham?

Jason Grey
  (3:24 PM)

Tougher question than you might think. Tulowitzki has the most upside for fantasy purposes with more power and speed than Drew or Beckham, so that gives him the nod for me.

Mike (Rhode Island)

Been waiting all week to find out your opinion on Latos going forward.

Jason Grey
  (3:27 PM)

Complete take here: http://insider.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/story?page=greyminorachievements090708I saw bids way too high in mixed league for Latos this past week. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan and will be all over him for next year. The bigger issues in the short-term are the fact he's been limited to 80-90 pitches per start in the minor leagues, and after missing a lot of time last year they will monitor his innings very carefully down the stretch. How much is he actually going to pitch and for how long each game?

Travis (New Orleans)

Follow up on Tillman. French, Gaudin, or Tillman for the rest of the season.

Jason Grey
  (3:29 PM)

Surprisingly, I'm going to say Gaudin. He's really had only one bad start in his last seven, but that's been hidden in his overall numbers, and we don't have to worry about innings limits, etc in the last month like we may have to with Tillman.

Steve (Boston)

JASON THANKS for the heads up on HANSON months ago. Do you see his innings pitched being limited later in Sept? Also Baker or Anderson going fowaRD? Thanks

Jason Grey
  (3:31 PM)

Perhaps the last couple of weeks, but they've been giving him extra rest and he's been limited a bit already so he may not get a huge amount. It's certainly a factor down the stretch. Like them both, but going with Baker.

Pete (NYC)

Gardner or Bonifacio if you're targeting SBs?

Jason Grey
  (3:31 PM)

Gardner, because the Marlins can't really keep playing Emilio much longer, can they?

Jay (San Diego)

Jason, does Travis Wood have any longterm dynasty league value or should I try to fool someone by having them look at his Double A numbers?

Jason Grey
  (3:33 PM)

Obviously those numbers demand attention, but he's a 5'11 southpaw changeup artist, although his breaking ball is better this year. Odds are against him continuing to do this as he advances, so the trade route might be the best value.

Jason Grey
  (3:35 PM)

Not that I condone leaving my chats, but Buehrle is perfect through six. Is there a guy more underrated every single year as a quality starting pitcher by fantasy owners?

Joe (Wash)

How is Niese as a prospect compared to Tillman or Latos? not even close?

Jason Grey
  (3:36 PM)

Not even close.

Robert (Hartford)

Ricky Romero or any of the O's pitching prospects? Which ones?

Jason Grey
  (3:37 PM)

In a long-term dynasty league I'd take Tillman, Matusz and Arrieta over Romero. Not necessarily a knock on Romero, just a reflection of the upsides of those players.

Holly (Long Beach)

Answer a gal's question, please: I'm speculating for saves-- Rauch or Jim Johnson?

Jason Grey
  (3:40 PM)

Johnson, because he's the better pitcher and I've heard the asking price on Qualls is high because the D-backs still have him under control for '10 - but you never know with the trade market.

Matt (Chicago)

Are you the guy who ranked Wright 13th in the Top 250? If so, you're genius. He's not #3 in the game anymore. Not by a country mile, city mile, or even a NY mile.

Jason Grey
  (3:42 PM)

That sounds right, I know I had him lower than everyone else, but still too early to tell, yet. He certainly hasn't burst out of the gates in the second half.

Scott (Houston)

How do you feel about Tim Stauffer the rest of the year?

Jason Grey
  (3:43 PM)

Not a fan...but I started him this week in a shallow mixed league because he had a two-start week at home against Florida and Washington, so I rolled the dice. That's pretty much what I would do with him is play matchups.

Travis (Nashville)

Jason, I'm dying here. Starting Baker tonight?

Jason Grey
  (3:44 PM)

If I own Baker (and I do in several 12 and 15-team mixed) he's starting for me.

Tom (Tor,CAD)

Kendrick a good 2nd 1/2 player to target if I need AVG in a tight race?

Jason Grey
  (3:45 PM)

As usual, pleading the 5th on Kendrick questions. You all know what I think and trying not to jinx it.

Tarr (Orlando)

Porcello or Bucholtz for this year and keeper?

Jason Grey
  (3:45 PM)

Buchholz for both.

Frank (Queens)

Worried about Miguel Cabrera's lack of power?

Jason Grey
  (3:47 PM)

Que? His slugging percentage is .553 vs. 537 last year with an OPS 60 points higher. What's to worry about? A few less balls not going over the wall? I can deal.

The GOOCH (NYC)

Is Everth Cabrera a safe drop right now? I need steals badly

Jason Grey
  (3:49 PM)

I'd say so. As I mentioned frequently in previous chats, pitchers are discovering they can knock the bat out of his hands because he doesn't have the pop to do damage yet. Outfield pinches in and suddenly those balls don't drop. Infield hits only get you so far.

Andrew (WI)

Keeper league stashing question: Reimold or Everth Cabrera?

Jason Grey
  (3:49 PM)

Case in point: Reimold

Dave (Frisco,TX)

How about the 2b/ss slot for just this year? My choices include: DeRosa, Furcal, Drew, Felipe Lopez, A. Cabrera, Kendrick, or Barmes. I've been going with Furcal and Drew when Derosa went down but now roster space is tight. I need to make up some HR's but as always I'd rather have the best all-around player. I'm tempted on Derosa but Drew seems to be the safe call. Still, if Furcal regains his 2008 form, he could blow everyone away. Your thoughts?

Jason Grey
  (3:50 PM)

Still worried how much the back issues play into Furcal's production. I'll go with Drew for the reasons you mentioned if steals aren't a big issue.

Bob (NY)

PRADO...REAL OR NO DEAL?

Jason Grey
  (3:52 PM)

Empty batting average at best having a hot little run with the bat that will likely subside. Not counting on him for the balance of thr second half.

Kyle (CT)

Why haven't you been talking about Gaby Sanchez or Jhouyls Chacin this chat, both have been called up

Jason Grey
  (3:55 PM)

I only answer what I'm asked, but since you did.Talked about Chacin in the Latos article linked above. Sanchez profile here: http://insider.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/story?page=greyminorachievements090624I think the bigger reason is that both are in low-leverage roles right now. Sanchez is still Bonifacio's backup (inexplicably) for the moment, and Chacin is reportedly going to start his career in the bullpen to get his feet wet.

Jason Grey
  (3:57 PM)

Even with Betancourt on board the plan is still middle relief with Chacin for now.

Francis (Denvah, CO)

In a long-term keeper league which OF has the most upside\impact and potential for 2010 and beyond ? Fowler or Snider

Jason Grey
  (3:57 PM)

Fowler due to his speed.

Bill (Columbia)

Perfect Game going in Chicago right now...

Jason Grey
  (3:57 PM)

Welcome to the chat. Thanks for the news.

Jason Grey
  (3:59 PM)

Seriously, I mentioned it in the chat way back in the sixth inning. 50 people just came into the chat to mention Buehrle as if nobody knew about it.

Jason Grey
  (3:59 PM)

Ok, 3 quick one to finish...

jim (ny)

Better pickup this year and beyond Bucholz or Latos?

Jason Grey
  (4:00 PM)

Still going Buchholz for both...

James (Cleveland, OH)

Drop Smoltz for Anderson or Parra tomorrow?

Jason Grey
  (4:00 PM)

I go with Anderson over Smoltz in mixed.

Hank (FL)

Reynolds or Cantu for seconds half?

Jason Grey
  (4:01 PM)

Reynolds

Jason Grey
  (4:02 PM)

Coincidentally, time's up for me today. I'm going to go watch Buerhle with no distractions. See everyone next week. Thanks for stopping by.
