Sitting in the airport and ready to fly to Indy for what surely will be an interesting week. Let's get to the questions.
Why dosen't nascar allow teams who have a sponser to run the whole just let them race and let the start and park fight for the few spots left?
I understand your point, but what happened to giving everybody a fair chance? What if a start and park _ and who's to day they're start and park? _ gets left out even though it was faster than one of the sponsored teams?
In a dictatorship sport like nascar, if and its a big if it turns out the independant tests on mayfield are negative what does that say about the testing in NASCAR.
If NASCAR doesn't win this the entire testing system will be questioned. That was the governing's body's fear from the beginning, that they would lose the authority they already have established. Honestly, I've seen a lot of drug testing cases but none quite as unique as this one.
will jeremy mayfield ever race in nascar again?
If he wins his case he will. He'll have enough of NASCARS money to field a two- or three-car team.
Newt, Looking forward to ABC/ESPN coverage starting this week. What are your thoughts on the Red Bull rumors switching to Chevy with Hendrick support? I know we are waiting to hear about the big meeting in Europe before we know but I have to believe it gives them the "possibility" of being a better team. We all see what Tony did for Haas after he came aboard by hiring the right people to run things. Would Red Bull need to do the same or can Jay Frye get it done? Also, do you think they regret dumping my boy the "Dinger" for Scott Speed? Think they could get him back if RPM has troble fielding 4 teams next year?
One thing you have to remember, Red Bull doesn't have Tony Stewart or Ryan Newman. And power isn't a problem. Vickers has won like five poles. A lot of things actually don't make sense about this deal.
CAN KAHNE WIN THIS WEEK OR FINSH IN THE TOP 10
He has like three top 10s and has done well at Indy, so it's indeed possible he can do what you say.
Hey, Do u think Jr. Can ever get to 30 wins for his career??
At his present rate, hardly.
Kurt Busch vs Jimmy Johnson did Kurt over react or was he in right 2 be mad
Do you think Kasey Kahne has a good chance at winning this weekend at Indy?
Not yet. And it honestly looked like a racing incident, not on purpose. We probably won't get his true feelings until Friday.
Do most of the drivers still rescent Juan Pablo
I don't think it ever was most of the drivers. Most drivers respect what he has done. Sure a few got mad at his aggressive style the first couple of years, but he's toned that down.
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 1.10PM HI DAVID WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORIE NASACAR TRACKS EAST MIDWEST WEST SOUTH
South, Darlington, East, Richmond, Midwest, Indianapolis, West, Phoenix.
will mark martin make the chase, and if so, will he be able to compete?
The answer to both is yes. Or at least he should. He has four wins. If he doesn't get in NASCAR should start a wild-card system where the driver with the most wins outside the Chase qualifies.
This time of year we know who the pretenders are and who's the contenders, but who has had the worst press coverage? Kyle for his attitude, or Jr for his lack of success?
Junior gets the nod here, but Kyle isn't far behind. Too bad both don't get the coverage for what they do on the track.
who do you like to win at the brickyard?
Jimmie Johnson. He's won two of the last three here and his team has it all together. If not him I like Stewart.
Is Mayfield going to ever recover or is he done?
Too early too tell. Each time you think he's done they drop a bomb on you. Of course, the other side usually answers with a bomb. I'm waiting for the next one to hit.
How do you feel whenever people say that NASCAR is not a sport?
I feel they haven't really paid attention, that they are ignorant of the sport.
think truex jr. will have success at MWR or just be the same 6 to 15 place car?
If they keep improving the cars at the rate they have this year I believe he'll do well. He made the Chase two years ago and has the ability. I wouldn't hold this season against him. A lot has happened.
Will Mayfield ever regain respect from other drivers? Especially the ones who have spoken against him.
I haven't heard many truly bash Mayfield. If he wins this case he'll have as much or more respect than ever. Not many people beat the boss.
i hear there could be changes to the Chase in the future, is there any truth to that and if so what kind of changes?
I haven't heard of changes. What are you hearing?
sorry to do this to you David, love your nascar coverage but I have been shut out of every other NFL chats today so it falls to you. Nascar only from here on out thoughI have to say the refusal to cover anything on the roethlisberger case by ESPN is disgraceful. The only excuse that they have given is that it is a civil case and they dont feel a need to report it. Harrison's case is only a civil case and it was covered incessantly. The whole situation reeks of bias and favoritism and whoever has made the decision to not cover it should be ashamed. It is one of the biggest NFL stories of the summer, second only to Stallworth
I honestly can't comment on this one. Nobody has given me a reason for not covering the case and I haven't asked. But I feel your frustration. Maybe you can get your court jollys by following the Mayfield case.
Where can I find and unbiased review of the goings on with the Mayfield situation. Nascar.com provides little coverage of it, espn the same way...I think it is incredibly interesting from a scientific standpoint and from a social standpoint to see how this plays out.
I beg your pardon. We have covered this to death. What more could you want? I'm willing to pursue if you give me a good angle that hasn't been chased.
65 degrees and a light drizzle/rain. Just thought you would like to know what the weather is here.
Super. I need more long-sleeve shirts it appears. Heard there was a cool front up there. Thanks for weather on the spot.
What are the chances that kyle busch will miss the chase? Also, if he makes it, will he have a shot at dethroning johnson?
If he hss a few more races like others lately there's a good chance. His inconsistency has him on the bubble and that will keep him from winning the title.
Also, I asked you the Ricky Rudd question a while back, you said you would get back to me after you checked some things out...how is he doing, what are his plans? Thanks
He's doing just fine. Recovered nicely from the motorcyle accident. As far as plans, nothing big that I know of from a driving standpoint.
Hey David, can you explain Jeff Gordon's comments about how the race will be much different and the tires will be better? Thanks!
He was just saying that the embarrassment last season when the tires wore out every 9 to 12 laps won't happen this year with the new compound Goodyear is bringing. Nothing more.
do you hang out with the drivers outside of the racetrack?
I try not to. They see enough of me at the track and I see enough of them. My wife gets all of my time at home.
i know this is bad for Mayfield but do you think this looks bad for Nascar as well?
If he proves he didn't test positive for meth it does.
How do you see RPM as a whole shaping up for next year? Manufacturer change? Drivers? Cutting down to two or three cars?
Looks like they'll go to Toyota, but they've threatened to switch before and haven't. I believe it'll be a three-car operation. There just isn't enough sponsorship for four.
Do you know why you cannot purchase drivers firesuits anywhere, replica or authentic? Thanks
Um, no. Never tried. I am surprised you can't. Bet you can have your own made, though. And if enough people want one then I'm sure some company wold make them. But who would seriously wear a driver's firesuit to a race or anywhere else. It's too hot at the track and too silly outside of one.
will kahne.make the ponits race
If he maintains his current pace he will. He's been on a nice roll.
Can we get everyone to quit covering the Mayfield story until it is resolved? Between him and Michael Jackson, I'm afraid to watch tv anymore...
Funny. But the soap opera is too interesting to ignore.
NASCAR chat is great, but Rickey is the greatest of all-time.
He was one of my favorites.
Long sleeves in 65 degree weather? What? BOOOOO
OK, that might be drastic. At least I did pack a raincoat.
did you see Danica on Jim Rome, telling him she doesnt think sex appeal has anything to do with her markenting, while she was wearing some skimpy outfit.
Didn't see it but think you said all you need to know here.
David, good afternoon. I was wondering if you every work with any other networks beside ESPN such as the SPEED channels guys. (Kenny Wallace, Jimmy Spencer, John Roberts) If so are they easy to work with?
I haven't worked on SPEED, but know Roberts and Spencer and they both are great to be around. I can't imagine then being anything but fun to work with.
Roush has to drop a team at the end of the year, and its been speculated that the team would go to Yates. If the team does go to Yates will it be a true satalite situation or just a Roush car undercover?
Just a Roush undercover. And it's starting to look more and more like David Ragan is odd man out - and back in.
There's been a lot of "if he can prove he didn't test positive" talk. What in the world would NASCAR be thinking if they didn't have 100% proof that he did meth? It would make no sense for them to go to this extreme.
You could say the same for both sides. Intriguing to say the least.
who is your favorite driver to report or talk to? or do you have a favorite?
I don't have favorites, as in fan favorites. But Gordon, Burton and Earnhardt Jr. are three that stick out as far as a pleasure to interview.
If you could choose any sponsor who would it be and why? I would like to see Danica in the Victoria Secret Ford.
I've said VS should be in the sport for years, way back to when I suggested it to Shawna Robinson 10 years ago. I can picture a car with a piece of lingerie on the hood.
CAN KAHNE WIN.THE PONITS IF HE KEEPS GOING LIKE HE IS
He can't win the title, but he can make some noise. It's going to take a few victories to win this in my opinion.
do you think this weekends race is important, after last years mess?
From a PR standpoint it's huge for the track and Goodyear. Neither can afford a debacle like last season.
Speaking of Rickey Henderson, have you ever come across any NASCAR personality (driver, crew chief, owner, etc.) who spoke in the third person?
I'm sure I have. One comes to mind but don't want to mention him unless I remember for sure.
thank you for your honesty David, you're a stand-up guy. Moving on, Jr seemed to run pretty well at pocono (before the suspension part failure) and NH, both flat tracks. Good sign for this weekend?
Not based on his past record at Indy. He's been nothing but average there. And thanks for the comment.
Whenever you travel to races do you have to stay in a hotel or does ESPN have a motor home to stay in?
Hotel. It would ahve to be a pretty big motorhome for all the folks the network brings. Not sure I want to be that close. Have a nice room on the canal in Indy. One of my favorite places to stay on the road.
Hey David, which "team" do you see shaping up to run the best at The Brickyard this Sunday?
Individually, as I said earlier, I like Johnson. Organizationally, I like Hendrick Motorsports and Stewart-Haas Racing, which basically are the same.
I've heard it said that when NASCAR first went to Indy, they needed Indy, but now it's Indy that needs NASCAR. Whats your take on that?
You said exactly what I said in a column that hasn't been posted yet. The track needs the income a NASCAR race produces more than NASCAR needs the publicity. Having said that, it's still a big places for NASCAR to be.
David - you think JR's lost the "no fear" mentality it takes to win? With that, his confidence?
There are those who might argue that. I can't get inside his head, but he seems to make a lot more mistakes now than he did a few years ago.
remember when Dale Sr. won in 95' and said it feels great to be th first man to win at Indy... being Gordon won in 94' classic!!
Funny stuff. And when Wallace was the first Cup driver to get on the track in '93 for a tire test Earnhardt passed him on the first lap so he could say he was the first to lead a lap.
Is there not a competitive bone in Rick Hendrick that wants to send SHR some equipment that might not be quiet up to par with what his boys are running?
You have to respect the guy for giving everybody the same stuff. All of the engines he builds are so close it doesn't matter who gets them. If you're going to run a lease program it has to be that way, otherwise why would you want inferior equipment?
Are you allowed to talk about Big Ben? or are you not allowed to talk about it either?
No restrictions I've been told about. I just haven't followed it as closely as you have.
If Danica was to come to NASCAR, which would be her biggest obsticle, the"good ol' boys". the lack of ecperience, or al the media circus that would follow her every move? It seems for her its a no win deal to move.
The lack of experience is the biggest deal. That will turn into a lack of performance and then criticism from the circus.
Have you written, or considered writing, a book? And if so, does your employer have first publisher's rights (i.e. ESPN Books)? How does that all work? Just curious ...
I have considered it. And ESPN I believe does have first right of refusal. What would you like to see.
Who is your favorite personality(owner, driver, or crew chief) in IndyCar?
I'm not really around those guys _ and gal _ so that would be hard to answer fairly. Danica is an interesting case study, though.
What are the chances harvick will be at rcr next year? Do you think richard will give him what he wants?
According to Childress the chances are 100 percent he'll be there. I'd go with 73.4 percent. And if Richard knew what Harvick of any of his drivers needed to improve performance he already would be supplying it.
I guess I just don't understand how he can stand losing to his own equipment. Although if I had his kind of money I might not mind either...
I joked about that with him at Charlotte in May. He laughed and said some of his own people wonder the same thing.
Do you think kasey will win at indy?
He'd be in my top 8 picks, if that helps. But I never guarantee wins.
Gibbs said in another ESPN chat that he doesn't have that much of a problem when Busch doesn't talk to the media after having a poor performance and put some of the blame on the media. What's your take on that?
He's probably thankful Kyle doesn't talk to the media at times because if Kyle did talk it might cause greater embarrassment. Lesser of two evils I'd say.
Is there any hope for the #33 this year?Started well and then.....
That one has me puzzled as well. Time is fast running out. Not sure what happened, and they aren't either. Some of it has been bad luck, but you can't blame it all on that.
do you recommend visiting indy for a race? what all is there to do there?
It's a cool town if you have somebody to share it with. The Slippery Noodle is one of my favorite spots for entertainment, although the food is a bit greasy. Ikes and Jones also is a fun hangout. And there are plenty of great restaurants.
If you were starting up a team which four drivers would you want on your team besides Stewart, Johnson, and Gordon?
Hmm. Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano and Jeff Burton for solid leadership.
its highly unlikely that lance mcgrew will be jr's crew cheif when we get back to daytona next february, who are your top five canidates for the job, and are you hearing any names?
Nothing new to report there. I'm sure they'd love to have Dariun Grubb back now. He'd be ideal.
Do you think more than 1 Roush-Fenway driver, maybe Biffle and Edwards will make The Chase? Thanks for your insight.
I'm betting on three, Kenseth, Edwards and Biffle.
Do you think kyle busch will go down as the best driver in nascar history? And how much longer do you see dale "overrated" jr racing?
Not unless he wins three or four titles to go with all the wins. As for Junior, not sure. If things don't turn around no more than five.
How much longer do you think Kurt will stick with Penske if they have another bad year again after having such a good one. Since Kurt has taking over for Rusty, they've had a history of being hot one season and then being cold then next.
Kurt's having a pretty good year. I'm not sure where he could go that would be much better.
Hey David, new to NASCAR, but can you explain these "partnerships" that certain teams have? (e.g. - Hendrick and StewartHaas). Isn't this just a way to backdoor the 4 Car Per Team Rule?
You may be new, but you hit the nail on the head.
Interesting answer. Hamlin, Busch, Logano and Burton. I would go with Edwards, Hamlin, Busch, and Newman.
I like the youth and potential of the guys I picked. Edwards isn't a bad choice, though, particularly from a marketing side.
What happened to Tony Eury Sr. Isn't that who Jr. had his most success with? Why not reunite them?
He's a crew chief for Junior's Nationwide team.
Do you think JPM pulls through and possibly wins an Oval? He has alot of experience at Indy.
This would be the ideal track for him to break through. And he's performed well in past Cup races. ... Oh, look at the time. My flight is boarding soon. Until next week.
