Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks! A bit of a slow week but there's plenty to discuss with Cotto-Pacquiao being set, the Klitschko-Haye-Valuev soap opera and the possibility of Pavlik-Williams. There's a big new notebook today and a new blog plus another blog on the way. So let's get to it.

Jose (NY)

Dan, love the possbility of Paul Wiiliams and Kelly Pavlik fight.Good for both of them if it can be done.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Big if. Right now the split of the money is the issue. Cross your fingers.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Dan, you are a freak.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

This we know.

Anthony S. (Devon, PA)

Any word as to whom Juan Manuel Lopez fights next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

As I wrote a week or two ago, they are looking at matching him with Rogers Mtagwa in September.

michael odell (kentucky)

do u think we will ever see pac man fight mayweather

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

If they both win their next fights I do think eventually it will happen because the money is so freaking huge for that fight.

Sean (Fort Lauderdale, FL)

Do you think 160 is a bit too high for P-Will (at a championship level)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Not at all.

joel (woodland)

FYI, the link to the chat is not up on the boxing page; had to go through Sportsnation

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

It's up there with the David Haye story and blog flashing "live."

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Dan, where do you see Mosley going from here since Pac Man, Cotto, and Mayweather are out of the picture?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Mosley has a lot of thinking to do. Obviously, there have been some talks for Berto but the offer was rejected by the Berto camp as way too low. So they either need to sweeten the offer or go with someone else like a Clottey or Cintron, etc...

Jon (San Fran)

Is Cotto's belt on the line in the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

That has not been determined but I would imagine it would be.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Hey Dan, read that Chavez Jr. plans on headlining Latin Fury 11 in early September, any idea if that will be PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Yes, Latin Fury is a PPV series.

Brock (Belleville)

Obviously, a tournament in every weight class would be awesome for the fans but we all know that it has to make business sense. What class would benefit the most from a 2nd tournament being made. My vote is 154 with the tournament basically a way to crown Paul Williams a legit option for big named opponents after its done.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I would say probably lightweight or junior welterweight would be the best. The 168 tournament is not to crowd on fighter. It is a lot of even fighters going for it. Williams is by far the best at 154 in my mind. I already know that. At the other divisions there are questions. Marquez is leaving lightweight so it's open. Manny is leaving junior welterweight so it's open. And both divisions have reasonable depth.

Rob (Los Angeles)

Is Vitali-Arreola now imminent after Haye bottled another Klitschko fight? Thanks Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

The sides are talking. Supposedly, from what I heard today, Arreola is nowhere near in shape and supposedly says he wouldn't be ready, which I find pathetic if it's true.

Todd (Florence, SC)

Dan--How much did HBO put up for the possible Williams-Pavlik fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

A lot.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Any chance of Aydin-Berto being made? That is a underrated fight if it comes off.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Decent chance. Read my blog on that very topic, which I think will be published later today or tomorrow.

David Haye (U.K.)

Who needs the Winky Wright School of Boxing Business? I'm starting the Cowardly Lion College of Courage!

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Dan, Mayweather was faced with a lot of skepticism from other writers when he delayed his fight with Marquez, how come Chavez is not facing even more when he was simply too lazy to lose weight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Chavez is not nearly the star of Mayweather and most people in this country don't care.

Tom (Sacramento)

I think Haye going against Valuev is a better move for Haye. When he beats Valuev he will have more power in negotiating. Its a biz move

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I agree with you. But basically Haye talked and talked and talked and talked and talked about what he would do to both Klitschkos and then he punked from both fights. If he didn't want the fights, fine. But the way he and his manager went about it makes them look like idiots.

Pancho (Los Mochis)

What do you make of the historic Promotors conference - will it amount to anything?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I've talked to several who were there and they all said it was productive. They formed a trade organization to speak with one voice on certain issues. It can't hurt and maybe will ultimately help.

Rick (Marina)

Did you see the Freddie Roach story on Bryant Gumbel's show on hbo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Yes, it was terrific and I commented on it in my blog yesterday. I would urge anyone who missed to watch it on one of the many replays.

Aaron (MA)

any update as to Woods/Cloud being on FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I spoke to folks about that right before this chat started. It's not 100 percent done but it's going to be on the Aug. 28 FNF show as the opening bout.

Ben (Phoenix)

Is Latin Fury worth buying w/o Chavez and Gamboa?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

If you like the fights on the card, I guess so. But this is a rough one to reccomend.

Angel (Carson City, NV)

I am surprised that Hasegawa is not in your top 10 pfp - he has dominated solid competition. I think his promoters should take his show on the road for big money fights - he has the talent to take on Agbeko, Donaire, Darchynian etc.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I have had him as high as like 19th or 20th. He's right there on the fringe. He's really good. I've have maybe nine or 10 of his fights. He's the best fighter in Japan right now.

Brooks (Cleveland, OH)

I immediately got excited when I read your blog yesterday about the possibility of Pavlik-Williams. It is literally the only "big" fight out there for Pavlik. I just hope everything comes together. What is your gut feeling this happens? 50-50 it does, better or worse?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Really hard to say. They are not on the same page as to what the split should be.

Don (Buffalo)

Looking forward to next weekends Campbell / Bradley fight - I like Campbell to school Tim Bradley. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Very solid fight. I don't think Nate "schools" him. I very much doubt that. Could Nate win? Sure he can. But as much as I like and respect Nate, I am picking Bradley on a decision.

Joe (Green Bay) [via mobile]

Dan-O, I had a chance to Kenny-Mayweather II on ESPN.com and I sort of cringed when Floyd decided to play the HGH card when Moseley's name came up. Did he really have to go there?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

He'll go anywhere he has to in order to avoid giving honest answers to legitimate questions about the kinds of fights he's taken.

Tommy (Detroit)

Dan of the night time world - I don't want to seem out of line here, but Haye pulling this off is no surprise to me. I don't think he ever really wanted a piece of either K brother. He is just muscular guy with a big mouth.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

His actions speak louder than words. Instead of fighting either of the top 2 heavyweights he opted for a guy with a belt who lost to Holyfield and got a gift. That's David's call. But if he thinks he is somehow a legitimate world heavyweight champion by beating him, well that's his problem. He had a chance to fight the best. He underhandily backed out of both fights and decided not to back up his words. He has no credibility anymore.

richard ((united Kingdom))

dan, you heard any news on the sky box office PPV figures for Khan-Kotelnik? I heard it did less than 30,000 buys, so surely Frank Warren lost a ton of money, like he did on the Calzaghe-Kessler promotion?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I have heard it did in that range, which is very, very poor.

Jon (SF)

Pavlik should get at least 60%, maybe even 70%. He is the champ, sells 99.9% of the tickets.

Henderson (Wichita, Kansas)

Dan, what is up with that weak Versus card next week? Talk about a big step down from Pascal v. Diaconu!

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

That card is Golden Boy's "Fight Night Club" show. It's the second episode and not designed to have big names or title fights. Just good solid club fights with nice action and maybe some future stars on the way up.

Brian (Washington, DC)

Why all the mystery regarding the weight limit for Mayweather Marquez? I really don't get it. Maybe there's a plus minus for weight in the contract, so that they can announce the "weight" at the last minute? It just seems like a kind of make-it-up-as-we-go-along sort of thing...weird...

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I have no idea other than Mayweather doesn't want to talk about it and has instructed the promoters not to talk about it. The weight is 144. I have no idea why the big secret but it makes the promotion and fight look fishy, like everything is not above board, which is not a good thing when you are trying to sell a fight.

Jon (SF)

I bet Goosen and AH think PW should get 50%. Laughable.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I have no idea what they are asking for but Williams getting 50 percent would be a joke when Pavlik is champion and obviously a bigger star/draw.

Jamesa (Ottawa)

Dan 4 months until the biggest fight of the summer. I am wondering why people think it will be so close. PacMan's relentless style is going to destroy Cotto. Bring on Mayweather my man, bring him on.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

A lot of people don't agree with you, which is a good thing. When there is a healthy disagreement over a fight involving big names and top guys it makes it more interesting. If evryone thought Manny would just crush Cotto or vice versa why would anyone want to watch the fight?

Alan (Plantation, FL)

I think Jon from SF needs to realize that Pavlik only sells in Youngstown. His last PPV did awful, and he hasn't won a meaningful fight in 17 months when fought Jermaine Taylor.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

You obviously have never seen the crowds that turn out to see Kelly fight in Atlantic City. And even if he only draws in Youngstown, as you say (and are wrong), Williams doesn't draw a big crowd on his own ANYWHERE ON EARTH.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Dan I was surprised to hear you say that Gatti beat Robinson in their first fight. I thought Gatti only won 3 rounds, the 4th. 6th, and 10th.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I have always felt he won as do many others. And it was a split decision which means one judge had the same thought as I did.

steve (reno)

hey alan, you ever been to Pavlik fight in AC, buddy? And where exactly does paul williams sell?

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Pavlik-Williams is an interesting fight. Pavlik has the length and reach to deal with Williams. I wander if Paul can handle the power and pressure for 12 rounds.

Brooks (Cleveland, OH)

I lean toward Pacquiao, but I can't understand how some like James feel it is an easy pick to make. to me it is a great fight because it seems pretty evenly matched to me . . .

Craig (Calgary, AB)

Kudos for calling out the corrupt WBA on their multiple champions farce. I wont be surprised if the other ABC's start following in their footsteps. I wish there was a nuclear button I could press to make them all disappear.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

The WBA is a joke and I just pointed out the facts.

Davis (Gainsville, AL)

Has HBO officially announced a reduction of boxing coverage, or is this just a lull we are going through?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

There is no reduction. It's summer, the Mayweather fight was postponed. Fear not. It's a loaded fall.

Mark (Mary Esther, FL)

Dan, what is the dvd recorder you use to copy your fights? I recently got a DVR and its time to start getting my recorded fights on DVD....

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I use a DVR to record fights and then burn them using my Panasonic DVD recorder/VHS combo. It's a workhorse. I have two of them that I bought in about 2005 and I love them.

Jonathan (Chicago, IL)

Dan, who do you think is next for Kahn?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Salita is the mandatory so that's a reasonable possibility.

David (London)

any news on Kirkland?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

He pleaded guilty last week and will be sentenced in late September. He's gone from the ring until at least next spring, maybe longer.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Freaks -- NOTEBOOK IS UP!

Pancho (Los Mochis)

Dan, if you were managing Victor Ortiz, would you bring him back cautiously, or throw him back in a meaningful fight right away?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I would bring him back with at least one sort of lesser fight to help him regain some confidence. He has to be a bit stunned by what happened.

Rick (Marina)

If Marquez beats Mayweather without a doubt where would it rank in the all time greatest upsets? Since nobody and I mean nobody is giving Marquez a chance.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

It would defintely be a big upset. It's not Douglas-Tyson or even Holyfield-Tyson, but it would be a big shock to a lot of people.

WBA (Panama)

We hereby designate David Haye as the "interim mandatory challenger".

Mike (Goldens Bridge)

What do you see next for Chad Dawson? Is the Glen Johnson rematch official yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Yes, the fight is signed.

Eric (North Hollywood)

I'm torn between the Pacquiao/Cotto Fight. At first I think Pacman will be too fast for Cotto, but then I think Cotto can throw Manny's rhythm off with his jab and body attack. Cant wait til Nov!

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Now you're talking. There are scenarios to see in which both guys can win the fight. All I know is that whoever wins, it's going to be great.

Erik (New York City, Queens)

Why is Mayweather hiding the weight for his match against Marquez from the public? What does he hope to gain from this? Im not curious about the weight now im angered about it.. he made a legit fight an annoying bout to follow.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I couldn't agree more and I have said that more than one time to Golden Boy and HBO.

Gary (Falls Church, VA)

Khan is the "Champ", Maidana is the "Interim Champ", yet Salita is Khans Mandatory? Shouldnt Maidana be the mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Word to the wise -- do not attempt to use logic when discussing the WBA. You can only hurt yourself. Leave it to the professionals. Do not try this at home.

David (Corning)

Will the Haye/ Valuev fight be shown on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Unlikely. As far as I know there are no plans for that at this time. Haye has already screwed HBO twice. I don't see the folks there jumping to put this fight on.

Joe (Green Bay) [via mobile]

Question re: DVD Recording: Whenever I try to record an HBO fight from my DVR I get an error message saying I'm not allowed to record it. Are you allowed to share your secrets on how you record HBO fights to DVD?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I have a DVD recorder that allows it. I would probably become violently angry if I bought one that didn't.

Jon (Los Angeles)

Hey Dan, I know you say Cotto vs Pacquiao might be an evenly matched fight, with people picking either guy to win, but the ESPN poll shows 60% of voters picked Pacquiao by KO. Don't you think Pacquiao is at least significantly favored, even though Cotto won't be a pushover? He cuts so easily now and there's nobody sharper than Pacquiao.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I believe it's an even kind of fight. What do you want from me? Everyone has their opinion, which is cool. I have stated mine and you are not going to change it.

Mike (New York)

What type of blank dvd's do you use when recording the fights, I've been having problems lately with some dvd brands.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I use TDK -R. I buy them in packs of 100.

Chris (Nashville)

Danimal, have you read Mayweather's recent quotes regarding the MMA and why it was created? He is a joke, inside and outside the ring. The only thing more ridiculous than the WBA is Mayweather's opinion of himself.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I did see his racist comments. He sounded like an uneducated fool.

Pete (SLC)

That Delvin Rodriguez card on the 1st is loaded with talent. I can't believe FNF picked up the Angulo card over it

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

That is not what happened. Delvin's promoter, Joe DeGuardia, has a nice site deal at the Mohegan Sun which will pay him good money for the fight. But it has to be Aug. 1. That date didn't work with the ESPN2 schedule. It was not a matter of picking one fight over the other.

Jose (NY)

People slept on Holyfield when ha had some bad outings and then KO'd Tyson. Just because Cotto has struggled a bit recently doesnt mean he will get Ko'd or will be overmatched by Manny

Shane (Idaho)

Danimal, I have been watching the replay of the Gatti/Ward fights on HBO. Their first fight was damn good. Where does the first one rank in your top fights of the last 15 or 20 years?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Way up there, top 4-5 for sure. But not No. 1. That belongs to Corrales-Castillo 1. I also would put Barrera-Morales 1 ahead of it as well as Somsak-Monshipour.

Mike (New York)

I cried at the end of the first Gatti-Ward fight when watching the replay. That fight was amazing and the fighters embracing like that afterwards and both camps showing respect after was a beautiful thing to see.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I got a little teary eyed myself.

Zach (MPLS)

Is the Kevin Johnson-Odliner Solis fight off? If so, Why?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

It's postponed because Solis' trainer is not available and Solis isn't going to train/fight without him. Top Rank told me it plans to reschedule it for the September PPV with Juanma.

Gerardo Avitia (Chicago, IL)

Dan. Any truth to the rumor that a possible Valero vs. Humberto Soto fight is in talks for the fall?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

It's not a rumor. I wrote it my blog yesterday because that is what Top Rank, which promotes both of them, told me they were thinking about. I hope it happens because it's a great fight for a PPV undercard.

saad (kansas)

Joe, I had the same problem. Go to Best Buy and ask for a DVD recorder that has its own tuner. You'll be in business.

Rick (SpringTown)

Dan- I know its real early but who do you think the final 4 will be in the 168 tourney? Also who fights in the championship and wins??

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Too early to say.

Dave (NJ)

Dan, Have you been slipped an advance copy of "Assault in the Ring" yet? Promos on HBO.com for it look outstanding.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I did receive an advance copy of it a few days ago. I'm going to try to watch it this weekend and perhaps blog about it next week.

Bing (Philly)

Do purse bids only occur when the fight is mandatory? Like P-Will isn't Pavlik's mandatory so a purse bid would never happen right? Meaning this could get killed at the negotiating table.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Correct. A purse bid is only used in the event of a mandatory fight in which the promoters tell the organization they can't make a deal or elect not to negotiate a deal. In that case, the organization involved calls for a purse bid. The promoter who bids the most money gets the right to promote the fight. And any promoter registered to that organization can bid.

Nash (NY)

When is Vladimir vs Povetkin gonna happen, will HBO buy it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Wladimir may end up fighting Chambers next. They are talking about December. Whather HBO buys it has not been determined.

Jackson (IA)

Is it my wishful thinking...or does Cotto-PacMan have SERIOUS Hagler-Hearns potential?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

It has that potential.

Raj (San Diego)

I hope HBO starts being a little more stern about which fights it throws money at. Pavlik v. Williams is acceptable. Pavlik v. Mora would be excruciating.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

HBO never planned to buy Pavlik-Mora.

Tommy (Detroit)

R.I.P. Marco Antonio Nazareth

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Agreed.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan what do you think of Shumenov as a fighter?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

I have seen a few of his fights and he is a very interesting fighter. Good amateur career and moving very fast as a pro. I believe he will win the fight with Campillo and get a belt inside his 10th fight. He is apparently a big deal in his home country and generates big money.

Eddie ((CA))

What are the chances of Cotto Margarito II in summer 2010?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

If Margarito gets his license back that fight is very likely regardless of Cotto wins or loses against Manny.

Mark (Brooksville, Fl.)

Dan,After reading your excellant blog about David Haye, which nailed Haye's inane actions, I have one question: did you intend to say that Haye was a better/harder puncher than Evander Holyfield? And if so why?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Of course I intended to say that because it's true. Holyfield was never a big puncher at cruiser or heavy. Haye has been a crushing puncher as a cruiser and scored big knockouts in both of his heavyweight fights. And even if you think Evander was a puncher at one time, he certainly isn't anymore and never once hurt Valuev.

Damon (San Diego)

I just don't get how it is appropriate to have a "Jew vs Muslim" promotion. People are currently dying over this. In America I as a Jew get along very well with Muslims but innocent people in other countries are maimed and killed. I just think that sort of promotion shows no class.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

When I wrote that I never suggested it was appropriate. Frankly, it disgusts me if that was the tact they would take for a Khan-Salita fight. What I did say is that I thought that is how the fight would be promoted. That doesn't mean I condone it.

Cesar (Chicago)

Do you know when tickets are going up for sale for Cotto vs Pac?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Probably in late August or early September, which is when they will have the press tour.

Isaac (Oxnard Ca)

David Haye is nothing but a punk, all bark and no bite. Now I REALLY want to see him get his ass whooped by both of the Klitschko brothers.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Your comment is what so many of the Freaks are saying today.

jason (atlanta)

dan, ive been meaning to ask this for some time. although it hasn't been reported this way, do you think Hershman told all the promoter, managers, and fighters in the Super Six that if they didn't cooperate and make the fights/event happen, that they would not be getting dates on Showtime? I can't see how there wasn't a little "take it or leave it" involved.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I am sure Ken had to twist some arms a little but ultimately it is a good deal for everyone involved. The fighters and promoters and managers get certain guaranteed fights and good money. Showtime gets a terrific event. It seems like a deal where it actually is good for all involved. And the fans also are big winners.

jason (atlanta)

In the blog you asked about Pacquiou-Cotto outselling Mayweather-Marquez, and I think you're right, it WAY outsells it. The only thing that is going to keep it even close to competitive is all the people (and I'll be one of them) that are buying simply to see if Mayweather loses. I think that's half his sales appeal, people hoping he loses.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, I LOVE love love the idea of a Soto - Valero fight. I would pay to watch that fight alone!

Jose (Los Angeles)

Is it just me or is there something eerie about Juan Manuel Marquez when he talks about beating Floyd Mayweather? I know the fight heavily favors Floyd on paper, but somehow I still believe Marquez when he says he's going to find a way to win.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

He does sound very confident. If Mayweather really was hurt and is having trouble training full blast that will be a big help for Marquez as well. I know Marquez is a great fighter and relilient. And I know Nacho is a great trainer who can come up with a plan.

Keith H (Seattle)

In the words of Ric Flair, "To be the man, you have to beat the man." That is not to be confused with "Run away from the man. Twice."

Henry (Buffalo)

It is so sad when talented fighters like Omar Narvaez and Zsolt Erdei are content to fight garbage opponent after garbage opponent at home instead taking on the best in the world. Obviously they dont care about their legacy.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I actually think Narvaez has fought pretty solid competition relative to what is available in the division. He has fought some weak guys, sure. But he has fought some good ones and also left his home to fight in Europe several times. So I don't put him in the same league as Erdei.

Sam (Chicago)

I'd like to offer a counter-view on Khan-Salita. With the conflict between Jews and Muslims all over the world, it would be great to see two sportsmen from these different backgrounds who can respect each other outside the ring and compete inside of it. If the promotion is handled right, it could be a good thing.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

That's an interesting take and a pretty good one.

Mike (NJ)

Would Atlantic City be the odds on favorite to host a Pavlik/Williams fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Yes, it would be in AC at Boardwalk Hall.

Bucky (Denver)

I would say that Abarham and Ward have the easiest road in the tournament and Froch and Taylor with the toughest. Would you agree?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Anyone who has to start the tournament by facing Kessler, as Ward does, does not an easy road make, so I don't agree. I don't think anyone has an "easy" road, which is why this tournament is so great.

Jay Perry (allentown )

what about Sakio Bika

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Glad you asked. Here's a little tidbit for the freaks that I heard about last night and made some calls on this morning: Golden Boy has an offer out to match Bika against Allan Green for the Mayweather-Marquez undercard. I would say the odds of it happening are not great because it's not the best money. Also, Green has a possible fall ShoBox date on the table he can take to stay ready because he is the No. 1 choice to be in the tournament if there is a fallout and this would get him ready for that possibility, especially in the event that Ward or Kessler lose in September before the tourney starts.

Garth (CT)

While I don't blame Haye for taking the Valuez fight instead, he has really disrespected both Klitchkos now and I won't blame them for refusing to fight him in the future at all now.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Listen to me people: I don't blame him for taking the fight either. I blame him for being so over the top disrespectful and double dealing before pulling out (twice). Had he just said, hey, I'm taking the Valuev opporunity instead of the Klitschkos, fine. But the way he and his people went about it was unprofessional.

Jamesa (Ottawa)

Dandertaker, your random thought blog with respect to David Haye was excellent. Totally nailed it on the head. Unprofessional and very very chump worthy.

Louie (Carlsbad)

Hey Dan, can you clear something up for me? Is Pacquiao going for his seventh division championship against Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

If Cotto's belt is up, yes.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

How is this for Freak status? I stayed up and drank all night a few days ago reading Dan Rafael blogs, and I was late to work the next day.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

A true freak would have done that and made it to work ON TIME.

Simon (Newcastle, UK)

On a scale of 1-10 how did you rate Amir Khan's performance on Saturday? What would you think was best for the next couple of fights? take the mandatories to establish himself at Light Welter?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I thought he boxed a brilliant fight and stuck a great game plan Freddie Roach gave him. If he fights his mandatory, Salita, in the next fight that would be fine. I think he'd be a huge favorite against Salita.

Derek (Boulder, CO)

Dan, you and the rest of the fnf crew did a wonderful job in honoring Arturo Gatti's career and life last week

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Thank you. As long as Gatti is gone, I am glad it was me who was in the studio last week to pay respects to him. That wasn't easy but we got through it.

James (Boston)

Hey Dan, is it "official" that Teddy Atlas will train Alexander Povetkin? I read that Team Povetkin and Atlas, were to meet to determine if their partnership would be feasible....

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Yes, Teddy announced on FNF a couple of weeks ago that he will train Povetkin and that Povetkin was going to come to the US to train.

John Ruiz (WBA Headquarters)

Not so fast Mr. Haye. I am the WBA mandatory. Take a number!

Damjan (Charlotte, NC)

dancredible, this chat software seems to be ok this week - how's Joel Julio doing?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Don't jinkx it. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Nothing in the works for him at the moment.

Matt (FLA)

Any update on the Gatti Case? There is no way that he committed suicide. I hope his wife stays locked up for the rest of her life.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

First of all, everyone is innocent until proven guilty, although it obviously doesn't look good for her. As for the other stuff, I have talked to a number of people who knew Gatti and nobody believes for one moment he killed himself.

Randy (SINY)

so are we going to get the adamek-hopkins fight or not?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I think it's possible, but there are no specific talks that I am aware of at this time.

Sancho (Ca)

Hey Dan, what does hbo do with the sept 12 date???

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

I am not sure but I heard they've asked about the possibility if Dawson and Johnson could move up from Nov. 7.

David (Cape Canaveral, Fl.)

Whats up with Wlad possibly facing Fast Eddie? Isn't Povetkin his mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

They are both mandatory. Obviously, Wlad would have to apply for an exception, which I see no reason why he wouldn't get it.

Ronald (CA)

Hey Dan, do you prefer watching a fight at home in HD or to actually go to the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Definitely going. Go to the fight in person, watch on the DVR later. There is no comparison.

Aaron (MA)

I think you mentioned that Versus had intended to air Urango/Bailey on their network. Now that the fight is on FNF, do they have any other plans (aside from Fight Club)?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Versus still owes Tournament of Contenders one more live show this year.

David (California)

What is going on with Mike Alvarado?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

He's in jail until next spring or so.

Bime (Taunton Ma.)

D$$- Good job last week on FNF... Have you ever consider maybe a weekly boxing show. Almost like a chat, but on the air... You can have special guest like Bob Arum, Oscar, PBF. I think would b great.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

That would be fun, but ESPN would have to make that call, not me.

mike (oakland, ca)

who would win a fight between your two cats thunder or chico?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

My cats are Thunder and Popo, not Chico. Thunder is younger and bigger than Popo. He kicks Popo's ass when they do engage.

Randy (SINY)

mosely-Berto seems to be the only fight worth making for shane. It might not be Pac but it would still be a solid fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

It is a solid fight but it won't happen with the deal that was offered.

Marc (Potter, WI)

Do you think that B-Hop will ever fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Yes.

Keith (Chicago)

Why is lopez scared to fighting Marquez or vasquez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

You're a dope if you really think he's scared. Vazquez has been out of the for 16 months and is moving up to featherweight and there has been no offer. Marquez is also moving up and there has been no offer. Lopez generates good money without either of them and fights in a different weight class. I am pretty sure he would love to fight either of them because he probably knocks both of them out.

Chris (Vancouver)

D$, anyone who bitches about Cotto-Pac is an idiot. These are the kind of fights boxing needs. I dont care what anyone says, this fight will be FAR more entertaining then the possible Pac-Floyd showdown. He might be a little hard to take at times but Bob Arum is the best thing in boxing right now.

Randy (SINY)

I'm glad sports shows like Real Sports is profiling some boxing figures (Kirkland, Wolfe, Roach). After watching what Roach goes through has to make you appreciate what these guys are doing in the ring for our entertainment

Mike (Fairfax, Va.)

Stop avoiding a tough question...Dan, when Hatton, the champ at 140, moved up to challenge Floyd, no one said he didn't deserve the shot...So when Haye, the champ at cruiser, moved up to challenge Wlad, you said he did nothing to deserve the shot...Which one is it Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Hatton had already moved up to 147 and gotten a belt against Collazo and then moved back down and was regarded as a top pound for pound fighter. Haye isn't. Hatton had also beaten a Hall of Fame caliber fighter like Tszyu in overwhelming fashion to gain big credibility. What did Haye do? Get knocked down and beat Mormeck? Good win but come on. Haye also hasn't fought going on almost a year by the time he fights Valuev. Come on. Get a grip chief.

Banishment (Unknown)

Keith The DOPE come on down!!

James (Ashville, NC)

Sergio Mora has been saying Pavlik legally has to face him and he won't step aside. Could this be a problem making Pavlik-Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

They'll work that out I am sure. I feel bad for Mora because he does have a contract but I am pretty sure it will be resolved.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Do you know where I can find PBFs recent MMA comments? I searched for them, but couldn't find.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I believe it was a video interview on CBSportsline.

Chris (Vancouver)

Can we get a little Swamp Donkey love going in this chat?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

There ya go.

Chris (Vancouver)

Anyone who thinks Cotto doesnt have a legit shot in this fight is crazy. Im calling it now, Cotto stops him sometime after the 8th. This is going to be a fantastic fight.

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Dan, why do you give Jermaine Taylor no chance of winning the tournament? He was winning the fight against Froch until he got knocked out.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Read the last five words of your question.

Jorge ((East Los Angeles))

Dan, We are only a week away untill Alexander hopefully picks up a trinket. I was wondering if you have an early pick for Alexander/Witter, I see Devon picking up a unanimous decision victory.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Tough fight to pick but I think Devon's youth, desire and quickness should be enough to get it done. This is his big chance and he knows it. But Witter also knows this is probably his last chance. I'm interested in the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

OK, Freaks, I have to cut this a little short because the bosses want to check some software stuff since we seem to have gotten through 90 minutes without any issues. Hope you enjoy the weekend and read the new notebook and blogs. I'll talk to you next week. Peace.
