Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:00 PM)

Welcome NASCAR world. Ready to answer whatever questions you have. Fire away.

Richie Mikemond (French Island, Wi.)

Why does Nascar feel the need to be in the LA market twice? No one shows up and the race is usually a dud so it doesn't translate well to TV. If you put 30,000 more seats at Iowa that would be more than ever showed up at Cal. The racing would be better at Iowa which in theory would help the TV ratings which is where Nascar makes there money. The NFL can't make it in LA there is know way Nascar ever does.

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

The LA market is one of the largest in the country, way bigger than Iowa. NASCAR believes that fan support aside it's good for the sport to be in such places. I'm not so sure.

curtis (fla)

How many wins/championships do you think Mark would have he raced his whole carrer for Hendrick?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Hey, Roush Fenway Racing wasn't chopped liver. Mark simply has hit on the right combination, right chemistry. Who's to say had he jumped in with another crew chief he would have been as successful. But your question is valid. I'm not so sure he would have won a lot more races, but I believe he would have won a championship.

Daniel (Phoenix, AZ)

There is no way Penske can keep Stremme with how bad he has been ( especially after this nonsense at Pocono) so who is going to take the 12 ride next season??

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

I hear they're going after Brad Keselowski hard again. Stay tuned.

Jason (Columbus,Ohio)

Hey David, the last couple of trips to a road course the 24 car hasnt met his tipical road racing domination. Why is that? Stewart doesnt have a problem.

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Gordon hasn't been horrible. He just hasn't had things go his way. I wouldn't worry.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, hope you are doing well! My question is regards to silly season and where you think McMurray ends up? Also, I read awhile back on Insider that Yates could have four cars, is that true?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Jamie is being courted by Earnhardt Ganassi Racing to replace Martin Truex Jr. Roush also wants to re-sign him as long as tey ca nmove him to Yates. And Yates will only have four cars if sponsors step up. Doesn't look like it now.

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

patrick (catawissa,pa)

will tony stewart maintain his consistancy through the chase or will jimmie johnson flex his dominance once again?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

I'm still going with Johnson. Stewart looks good, but remember how strong Kyle Busch was entering the Chase last year. You just never know.

matt (NY)

when (if ever) will matt kenseth win his next championship?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

Let me rub my crystal ball. Hmmmm. Don't see anything.

matt (NY)

what organization will Matt Kenseth end his career with?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Roush Fenway I'm guessing. There was talk about him joining Dale Earnhardt Jr. at DEI a few years ago, but we see how that all turned out.

matt (ny)

do you think that the matt kenseth robbie reiser driver/crew chief combination will ever be united again in a sprint cup race?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Only two in a row per customer.

Johnny (NYC, NY)

You think Kyle Busch makes the chase??? Down by 100 points (and chasing good, though bland, drivers in Biffle and Kenseth) w/ 5 races to go...he's really gotta start moving up. Something tells me he still makes it, but after Pocono I am starting to think he might miss it...

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

I really do. It will be tough, but he has the capability of pulling off five straight great runs, even five straight wins. He'll also need some help. If the guys ahead of him don't slip five wins will net him almost nothing.

RAY GORDON REID ( VENICE FLA 34285 )

QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.15 HI DAVID WHOS YOUR PICK FOR WATKINS GLEN SUNDAY

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

I really like Montoya in this one. That team is on a roll and he's one of the best on road courses.

Phil (Philly)

Who do you think is the college football team of the decade? I say USC, but my friends are big Gator supporters (clearly they are in denial re the Zook years)...u credit USC w/ 2 titles because they took the AP the first year LSU won it?

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

I'd have to give it to Southern Cal myself. And having covered the other USC [South Carolina] many years ago I will assume you aren't talking about that school.

Rick (Mpls)

Haven't had time to read your column yet, but based on the title..which 3 cup drivers with full time rides should not and which 3 drivers either from truck or Nationwide would you replace them with?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Well first of all you should start reading immediately. Secondly, good question. Let's eliminate Scott Speed, Michael Waltrip and David Stremme. Well, Waltrip is eliminating himself next season, but that's another story. I'd replace them with Hornaday, Jason Keller and you pick the third. My mind isn't working.

Spencer (Indy)

David, are Truck Series Drivers eligible for the Nascar Hall of Fame? Is so are Hornaday and Skinner HOF'ers even though they struggled in cup for most of their careers?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

They are eligible and I would guess each would make it at some point. They deserve it.

mike (PA)

There's so many guys that can race competetive at road courses now, who you got this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

As I said earlier, Montoya.

Johnny (NYC)

had he not challenged his suspension and had he received counseling/treatment, do you think that NASCAR would have let Mayfield back in? Say in a year or two? If he cleaned-up his image, am I wrong to think he might have been able to return? Either way...sad case...

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

He indeed would have been allowed to return. That's the process. It is sad, and it's a long way from being over.

David (West Palm Beach)

What do you think his future holds for Jon Wes Townley? Do you remember the last time he ran a nationwide race without crashing his car? I cant.

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Your guess is as good as mine.

Mike Bliss (North Carolina)

Why the heck was I fired by Finch? How rude!

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Stuff happens.

Casey (Lake Mary, FL)

Hi David, even though Smoke is in first place you dont seem to hear a lot of people talking about him. Are they overlooking him or are they just expecting him to keep doing what he has been doing?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Have you been under a rock? Lots of people are talking about him and buying up his stuff almost as fast as they can make it.

mike (PA)

Who do you have out at Richard Petty Motorsports if anyone?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Nobody this year. They'll stick with four. I'm guessing either Sorenson or Sadler next year.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

Hey David, how do you like Smoke at The Glen this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

If I weren't picking Montoya Smoke would be a good pick.

Jack (Brooklyn, NY)

Newt, which road course race is more exciting, Infineon or Watkins Glen?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

I like Watkins Glen, but I'd rather go to Infineon and take advantage of the wine country.

Tommy (DC)

If Kez goes to Penske then who takes over Jr's NW car?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Earnhardt would have to find somebody. Chevy and Dodge won't mix.

Jack (Brooklyn, NY)

Don't forget two of the last 3 races before the chase are Bristol and Richmond, where Kyle Busch has been dominant lately.

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

I haven't. As I said earlier, I believe Shrub will rally.

John (Illinois)

Every so often, I hear reporters grumble about the length of the races, but I hear far less grumbling from fans. I personally like the longer races, and I feel that long races add more potential for drama/strategy/excitement. Who is really complaining about the length of the races in the premier series - fans or media? (and why).

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

I hear it from fans. If it were just reporters I wouldn't say a word about it. We like to complain about everything by the way.

dustin (WA)

as of now who is your pick to win the championship

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Same as it was last week and the week before and the week before. Jimmie Johnson.

Tank (.)

Sory for missing a few weeks in row...my question has to do with the chase...how does you think twelv guys in stock cars can possi

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

You not only missed "four" weeks in a row, you missed the end of your question.

Dustin Gandy (Soddy Daisy, Tn)

Hey David, i watched the whole race monday and ive read every article i could find trying to figure out what happened to the 88 with ten to go? Do you know what happened to make him fall to 28th?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

He'd bounced back and forth all day. Not sure what happened at the end. I was focused on the front.

dustin (WA)

when do you think jrff gordon will finnaly get his 5th cup titlle

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Could be this year. He's not out of it yet.

john (sacramento)

Is there talk this year that NASCAR is throwing out phantom cautions to keep things competitive or any other acts of conspiracy?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

There's always talk of that. Some of it is believable.

Johnny (NYC, NY)

Newt -- I made it down to Columbia this summer for a week (for work). I really liked it down there...the Chicken Fried Steak at Yesterday's was awesome (though it might have caused a 20 to 30 point spike in my cholesteral)...any other restaurants you recommend down there? I tried dinner at Delaneys...first time I ever saw American cheese placed on a pulled pork sandwich...yuck!!!

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Sorry, haven't lived in Columbia since 1995. I can recommend plenty of great places in Charlotte.

Wayland (Va Beach)

Chances Robby Gordon, Ambrose,or Said take a Cup win this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Ambrose isn't a bad pick. The other two also are good at road courses, but not likely to see Victory Lane.

YAR8pack (Newton's Apple Tree)

Mr Newton, how's it goin? I really enjoy the passing at Watkins Glenn, and do feel there should be at least 2 road courses on the Cup schedule. However, Sonoma, other than the location, is a really terrible event. If you could trade out Sonoma for another road course somewhere, where would it come from?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

The course in Mexico that they ran Nationwide events on for a few years was awesome.

Mark (LA)

USC 1 title .. Florida 2 .. LSU 2 ... Argument is between the SEC schools

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Yeah, but USC was there battling for the title every year. Not so sure the other two were.

Eric (Harrisonburg, VA)

The start and park situation is becoming a joke. Mike Wallace didn't even have a crew with him on Sunday. Why doesn't NASCAR do something about this, ie pay only the top 40 finishers or scale the field back to 40 cars?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

You're right, it is a joke. But as long as the guys come and qualify I'm not sure NASCAR is willing to turn them away in today's economy.

James ft.worth tx [via mobile]

Is Boris the most overrated of the "ringers"? he never leads, wrecks people just like your take on it

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

I don't agree.

Jack (Brooklyn, NY)

What, no love for the Finger Lakes wine region?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

Funny.

Rick (Mpls)

David, what gives? No answer to the 3 drivers question? That's it, you almost hurt my feelings, but my ex already used all them up. Consider yourself lucky.

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

I answered the question. Check below.

Tyler (Snohomish,Wa)

So do you think Brian Vickers will sign an extension or search for other teams?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

I'm told it's a formality.

john (sacramento)

any way you could get me some tickets for DEGA??

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

Just call the ticket office. Hear they have some.

Racefan (KY)

hey David, Ed Hinton said you thought maybe BK could end up at RB sense Smoke says no to three teams, what does your crystal ball say?

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

Red Bull officials have said no. I'm betting Phoenix Racing or Penske.

Racefan (KY)

Hey David, can the 24 keep pace with the 48, the 14, or even the 5 when the Chase starts.?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Definitely.

Dennis (Canada)

Two part question...who wins the chase and does Busch make it?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Jimmie Johnson and yes.

Rick (Mpls)

How about Keslowski for the third driver. If you're going to use the obvious Waltrip, I'll use the obvious Kez. It's only fair.

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

That was going to be my pick but Keselowski already drives parttime in Cup.

john (sacramento)

Is this the worst year ever for FORD in NASCAR?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Nope. They've had a lot worse. Just look at the records.

Lindsay (KY)

Hey David, how great will the double file restarts be at Bristol considering the way the racing has been?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

It would have been more hectic before the track was resurfaced. Now with two lanes it won't be so bad, but it definitely will mix things up.

Mark (Iowa)

Good article on Hornaday, do you see him winning 6 or more in a row? It is possible, he's won at Bristol and clearly the 33 team has found something.

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

No reason to think he can't.

Mark (Mount Airy, MD)

Hello David, I was very impressed with Kahne's performance at Sonoma. Is he a top 10 candidate at The Glen this Sunday????

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

He's a top 10 candiate about anywhere now.

David (Missouri)

Any idea why every week juniors cars are so loose is he not giving the feedback? It seems like every week mid race they look they are gonna have a good run but then end of the race he is loose and running mid pack

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Rick Hendrick would like to know the answer to that.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

What driver/crew chief combo do you think has the best "synergy" right now, besides Johnson/Knauss?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

It would have to be Stewart and Grubb.

Ben (NJ)

David, what was the coolest story you ever covered that no one knows about?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Thanks. Nice to hear good feedback.

Rich (LA, CA)

Hey Newt! If Sadler is out at RPM next season, where do you see him ending up?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

First, he has a year left on his contract, so that's a big if. If he's gone. maybe a place like Earnhardt Ganassi.

Michael (TN)

Who do you think will win the Chase?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

JIMMIE JOHNSON

Wyatt (Bill, WY)

What of Clint Bowyer making the chase now? I've been going to church regularly.

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

You need to keep going and pray hard for Clint. He needs some help to make it.

Bubba (Kentucky)

If you could talk about NASCAR with any one dead or alive who would it be and why

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Interesting. Earnhardt would be good, but I'd like to go back and talk to one of those from the start. Mabye a Lee Petty or somebody like that.

Ben Smith (Baton Rouge, LA)

Newt, is Dale Jr. in danger of losing the mantra of "most popular driver"? If not, who do you think is second right now behind him?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Tony Stewart is right there with him, or passed him depending on who you believe, in souvenir sales. I still believe Jr. is more popular though.

Josh Tx [via mobile]

the 24 seems to at least claw and scratch their way into the top ten almost every week. why dont they have anymore wins. do you think they will get another and if, when and where. thanks for taking my question

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

If you stay in the top 10 you have a good chance of winning. Can't predict it will happen, but I like his odds.

alex (fla)

any word on redbull switch?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Nothing yet. Was told it's not a formality, but I believe it will happen.

Ben Smith (Baton Rouge, LA)

The most consistent road course "ringer" is definitely Ron Fellows. But I think Carpentier could do some damage in the 55 this weekend as well.

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Patrick had a good run at Sonoma as I recall.

Phil (Philly)

USC has two titles...since when does winning the AP not count???

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

That's two votes for Southern Cal. one for the SEC.

James North Little Rock, AR [via mobile]

Hey David, when will the 2010 cup schedule get announced and what changes to it do you expect

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Usually by the end of the summer or early September. No major changes are anticipated unless the Kentucky deal gets settled in a hurry.

Phil (Philly)

Do the drivers actually like start and parking? Seems antithetical to what they are about as race drivers...if they're parking, they ain't racing???

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Scott Riggs quit because Tommy Baldwin made him start and park. That says it all.

Eric (Harrisonburg, VA)

But wouldn't it help them in this economy to not run as many cars? You save on resources (tires, fuel, etc.) You save money by not paying as many people...The "competitors" should at least have to try. Why not turn them away if they're not going to race?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

You're talking minimal expenses.

Jay (Indianapolis)

If Mark Martin has another quality year next year, winning races and making the Chase, do you think he would run another full season?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Hard to tell. It would be tempting for him and Hendrick, but they wouldn't think of addressing it now.

CP (Hamilton, NJ)

Hi David, did you hear that Ken Schrader is in Argentina some kind of NASCAR exhibition? Please don't tell me NASCAR is going abroad, if that's the case, that would be ridiculous... By the way, do you have any furhter inside news about Brad K.'s future in 2010?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Is the South Carolina governor there with him? Just kidding. NASCAR isn't going to ship teams abroad to race, not in this economy. Check out the chat below for Brad.

Bill (Carolina)

Who do you take in the chase...JPM? What is youre thoughts on Kile Bush making chase?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

I wouldn't pick JPM to win the Chase. I'd pick Busch before that and he's not even in right now.

Tyler (Snohomish,Wa)

Is Kahne going to be a favorite at the glen because he won at infinion?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Um, no.

Jason (ETN)

How about moving one of Atlanta dates to Road Atlanta?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

I doubt it would draw a crowd there either.

Nick (SLC)

What do you make of the Hamlin-Reutimann-Ambrose crash? and secondly, Do you think that was pure raw emotion out of Hamlin? I felt sorry for the kid, but glad he won. Its been a long season so far.

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

I think Hamlin wrecked them. Hamlin admitted it. I do like his newfound aggressiveness, though. And the raw emotion was touching.

TG (PA)

In answering Dustin's question about Junior's 28th place finish, it looked like Newman got into the back of Junior and hit him against the wall. So I guess that messed up Junior's car.

John (Durham)

Any news on Riggs for next year? Clearly hes worth driving in nationwide if not sprint cup.

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

Not a word.

dallas (pa)

are you related to issac newton?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Not that I know of. Think the science gene is on another side of the Newton clan.

David (Missouri)

I have a chance to go to one of two tracks in the chase which one is the best to go to kansas or texas

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

I'd go to Kansas. Like the city better.

bob (chattanooga)

how do you think truex jr will do next year at mw

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

They're banking on him doing well. He has the talent. It's all about chemistry.

T-berry (J-town)

Well if someone is praying for Clint, I light candles at church for Junior. Maybe I'd better light a bonfire.

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

Too funny.

gator (Md)

any news of RPM and Toyota?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

Nothing yet. I'm told it will happen.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

Where's your best guess as to where Kevin Harvick will go?

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

According to Richard Childress nowhere. He has a contract in 2010 and RCR expects im to stick to it. But if he finds a way out it'll be Stewart if he finds a sponsor.

Tony (Philadelphia)

Dave, why does NASCAR insist on 43 cars in the field, when its clear 5-10 of the cars do not have the technology or the money to compete. They are simply in the way and consider it an accomplishment if they make it through a quarter of the race. Would NASCAR be better off with 30 more competitive cars for each race?

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

It was set that way many years ago. Sure, they could adjust, but when the economy is up again they'd have to switch again. I don't think the start and park guys hurt competition. The same teams still compete, unless they are knocked off by a start and parker.

Eric (Harrisonburg, VA)

Okay, but how exactly does it benefit NASCAR financially to have start-n-parkers in the field?

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

They pay the entry fee still.

Rich (LA, CA)

Who does Ganassi choose if Sadler can gety out of his contract, Sadler or McMurray knwoing the prior relationsship was ok, but not great?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

McMurray appears to be the top candidate. I mentioned Sadler only because I thought that might be a good fit.

Matt (Chicago)

David, with Kasey Kahne's newfound consistancy, could he (or will he) be a threat in the Chase?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

He's showing signs of that, but way too early to predict.

Jason (ETN)

Line 2 people up on tricycles and Ken Schrader would magically appear next to them ready to race.

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Lots of comedians out there today.

NCFUBAR (Huntersville)

Stewart has just said no 3rd car at SHR in 2010 ... were is Hendrick going to have BK now or does Red Bull pull him in?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Looks like Phoenix Racing if he wants to be associated with HMS.

Nick (SLC)

I am no longer attending any of your chats. bye.

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

So sorry to lose you.

jook (long pond,pa)

hey david, with another long race at pocono do you think we will see them swith it to a 400 any time soon

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

According to track officials it'll always be 500 miles. It was a pretty good race, though. Best I ever saw at Pocono.

Alistair (Patuxent River MD)

Do you ever forsee Dale JR moving away from Hendrick because he can't perform like all of the other drivers do in that shop?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

I could see that. Maybe go to RCR and drive the No. 3 as he has said he would like to do at the end of his career. Or maybe elevate JR Motorsports to Cup and be his own boss. But I don't see it happening soon.

mike (PA)

Do they need to take a Pocono race off the schedule?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Until this past race I would have said yes. It was pretty good stuff. Maybe they should just keep one race there. Then again, maybe Monday's race was a fluke.

T-berry (J-town)

Yes we are comedians...by the way are you wearing that pink boa!

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

No pink boa for me. It was my wife's decision to dress the dog up silly. But it was for a great cause. And I was impressed that a 10-year-old came up with the idea. I would wear a pink boa if she held another event for silly looking sportswriters.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

To get away fromr acing for a second, what teams in other sports do you follow?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

The NFL, golf, college basketball. Have covered them all still keep up as much as I can around NASCAR.

John (Illinois)

How do reporters get away from tracks like Bristol after the races? I went to the race last year, and it took 4 hours to go 1 mile. Do you guys get stuck in the same traffic as the rest of us?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

We have to write for several hours after the race. Uusally by the time we leave it's thinned out. If not, we take the top secret back way.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

Well, that's all the time I have. Thanks for stopping by. Until next week, think pink.
