Good afternoon everyone...it's at a time like this I always like to say....."Let's get this partaaaayyyy started!"
Alan, how much of a bum am I now? And in you home state, no less. Well, hope you didn't have a coronary wishing me bad luck Monday.
Dude..if it makes you feel any better...they've have taken away Alan in PA's belt and any sharp objects he could poke his eyes out with..lol...They also thought there was an earthquake on Monday afternoon...Turns out things were shaking because of Alan screaming in pain when you took the checkered flag..
Way to go picking Hornish for your fantasy team !!! Hope you piled up the points. I flip-flopped until 1:57 Sunday and decided to go with Dinger and still came out with 645 my drivers finished 10,12,14,15,17 Thanks for all the help each week
Brian, I've got to be honest..I learned a lesson on the Hornish deal this week...especially when the track is green because of rain...past performance that year on flat tracks means more than practice that weekend...I had to stick with Hornish, but wanted to trade and I turned out to have a 737..not bad...there were a number of guys who the garage didn't like Sunday morning, but peformed beyond expections yet as good as they did at Pocono in June..I know ranking 'Dinger higher didn't kill someone's team...but I hate I went against my gut and past stats on Hornish.
O.K. Guru I currently have the 14,39,5,29,44 and no cap room. I am 4.5 and 3.5 is the 14
14 and 5 are potential winners..39 and 29 should be decent...44 is one of the "budget boys" I highlighted in my race preview this week. But call me crazy, I have Robby Gordon ranked first in that group followed by Ron Fellows, leaving AJ in a tight fight with Patrick Carpentier for the third ranking in that group..I have Ambrose and Gordon as the "floor" on my prelim team to go along with 48,5, and 42..I'd like to get Stewart, but just don't have the cap space.
You think Kasy Kahne will do good ?
I think the best you can hope for when it comes to Kasey is a top-15...I know he won at Sonoma, but past record at the Glen not that good..It wasn't at Sonoma either I know..but there are too many other guys who weren't competitive there that will be at Watkins Glen..I don't see any way Kasey goes top-five and think he'll need to be lucky to finish top-10..
Scored good thanks to hamlin was about to agree with alan from pa but i am on dennys band wagon.......also have 14,5,44,29. what do you think ???712 last week you think marky mark will be ok at watkins glen? 9 or 47 looks good to me???? what ya think???
If you start out with the 14,5, and 11..that will be a good place to be this weekend in my opinion..I like Ambrose and, again, call me crazy but I'm predicting a big point day out of Robby Gordon..
OK, Guru, I finally got a stone cold lead pipe lock for the Glen.........48,42,5,47,7............Going to go open a new bank account today!!!!!!!!!!
Great minds think alike right? That's my prelim team going into Sunday's chat..To be honest I might like the 14 more than the 48 at the top of my team...but I think these five will score some serious points.
Show me the money!! 14,42,5,47,7, you can't beat that.
Okay Cal...but can I have a cut?..lol...
does the the 9 have a shot @ a top 10 this weekend
As I said just a few minutes ago...he's got a shot, but I see him more like a top-15 car than a top-10...At the same price I like Montoya a lot better...and the same goes Mark Martin and at a lower price Marcos Ambrose.
Guru! Thanks to you I just got the best finish I ever had in fantasy nascar 3,5,6,7,12 THANK YOU
Hey everybody...We need to show Tyler some love and SHOW HIM THE MONEY!...thanks for the props.
early week BOYFRIEND BEATDOWN TIME (i'll be out of town this weekend). So what team is best? (a). 48,42,5,99,55 (b). 48,5,99,47,44 (c). 48,5,99,18,boris (d).14,48,5,47,55 thanks guru!
Casey...my gut..which I rub on like a crystal ball..lol..is telling me team "d" is going to be your best bet..."A" is my second choice...Now you go girlfriend!
Mark I'm in yahoo . Need 1 from A 24 or 99 2 from B 1,11,14,or 42 and 1 from C 7,44,47,or 55. Is there any other drivers I should look for a big week that I haven't picked?
I like the 24...14 and 42..and 47 in close pick over the 7..
hey mark, how do you think these guys ill fare this weekend: 24, 29, 9, 11, 14, 42, 44
14 and 42 have a shot to win..11 can finish fourth to eighth..29 is potential top-10 but feels like a lock top-15 potentially, which is the same way I feel about 9..24 is a lock top-10..44 feels like the best he can do is top-15...his team struggling a little bit coming in..if he gets a good qualifying run in I'll feel a lot better about what to expect out of him.
hey Mark, who do you think will be a couple of possible dark-horses/sleepers this weekend? I am think possibly Truex and Ku.Busch, what say you?
Truex has been top-10 the last two times out at the Glen..So, I'm with you there...Kurt Busch just don't have a good feel about him running top-10..Besides going up .1 you can get Hamlin and I feel a lot better about him...plus you can drop down to take Montoya, Martin, or Ambrose..So, Busch doesn't really enter the equation for me this weekend.
Mark, summer school is over, got an A! Anyways, in the Yahoo league and wonder what you think of the team of 24-14-42-47? Also, any new silly season with regards to Keselowski/McMurray?
Congrats on the grade...way to go..Team looks pretty solid for the Glen..I can certainly live with it..As for any more silly season news on Keselowski or McMurray...nothing really new out there..but Keselowski is saying he's up to seven or eight legit offers next season..I think he's being overly kind..He's probably zeroed in on two..no more than three.
Who would you pick for a 3 driver pickem anyone entered in this weekends race?
I'd go with 14,42, and 47..they are my top three pre-race picks this week.
All-knowing, all-steak eating Guru (pass the A1 Alan!), need a little help with my selections. I'm reluctant to lock in the 18 given his inconsistencies as of late and Robby Gordon seems to be good for at least 2-3 cautions per race, but is the reward worth the risk this week at the Glen for either of these two? Would it be safer to go with the 5, 24, and/or 99 -- and -- 44, 09, and/or 43? Many thanks.
18 gives me a little itch this week because of the inconsistency and the fact he's got to be so careful to get by this race without losing any more ground in his effort to make the Chase..Playing safe has never been his cup of tea. I definitely like the 5 over him and I wouldn't have a problem with the 24 over 18 either..Not sure I'd go there, though with the 99..If you can afford Ambrose over Robby Gordon do it..but I think Robby comes up big this weekend..This track better fits him than Sonoma and is easier for a guy to stay out of trouble..Among the other scrubs I like 09,55, and 44.
Mark: If I was picking a new team this week like it was the beginning of the segment, the first two drivers I would pick are the 14 and the 47. Why...because they rank one and two in Glen averages (162.00 and 165.00 respectively). Unfortunately, that is not the case since my Pocono team was the 14 ( 1.7), 11 ( .5?hey Alan?that?s the 11 and 190 points?eat your heart out), 5 ( 1.3), 29 ( 0.4) and 77 ( 0.5). Here?s the dilemma, although I already have Smoke, I have to free up some salary cap to pick up the 47. The easiest way is to drop Hornish and Harvick and add Carpentier and Ambrose. The problem with that is the 14, 11, 5 and the 29 all rank in the top 7 (2nd, 4th, 3rd and 7th respectively) in Watkins Glen Averages.I don?t really want to drop the 29 since I have him at 17.6 (cheap) and it looks like that team may be turning things around. I could also leave the 47 off, drop Hornish (that will happen no matter what) and add either Said, Fellows, Gordon, Carpentier. or Lilly. What would you do?
My first reaction..keep the 14 and 11..and 5..you can sub 42 for the 11 or 5 if you want..then go with 47 and 7..Harvick is beginning to get things turned around..but I don't think he has such a big performance at the Glen is value rises much if at all going into Michigan.
Mark: Tell us what you know about Lilly. It looks like he has the credentials for a good road racer but is the car any good?
Andy Lally is a guy with a lot of road racing experience Trans Am, Grand Am...from what I hear though he's been struggling to run races this year due to the lack of sponsorship. He'll be teaming up with David Gilliland over at TRG Motorsports..There equipment is good..but it's not the best...Too many questions for me to take a flyer on him this weekend.
ur lineup for stockcar challenge? my lineup is 14,88,42,47,77 will i be saying show me the money this week?
Jim, I don't think so..88 and 77..I don't expect much out of them this weekend...see if 47 and 7 fit into your cap..I think that would be a good way to go..If you need to go lower Fellows and Carpentier should be part of your thinking.
QUESTION TO MARK GARROW AT 3.20 PM well WELL GREETINGS GURU WHOS THE ALL MIGHTY POWERFUL GURU HAve for watkins glen sunday
Good afternoon Ray Gordon...I've got the 14,42 and 47 as my top-three picks going into the Glen..Smoke'em if you gott'em..lol..
Whats your buddy, Christopher Harris ,talking about in regards to Boris Said? He's not even on the entry list. Tell him to get with the program.
Okay...but maybe something will come up for Boris.
This weekend better pick in Stock Car Challenge Montoya or Kahne?
Hands down Montoya.
Hi GURU, Wondering why the elite panel of writers did not include Sam Hornish Jr. in the top thirty picks this week. Seems like an oversight, or you experts know something I don't. Your thoughts?
Richard...look at the stats..Hornish has never finished even top-25 at Watkins Glen or Sonoma..I'm a big fan of him on the flat tracks this year, major improvement, but on road courses...forgetaboutit.
Mark:: Over here in Western NC we are starting a hospital fund for Alan in PA. We understand that he spent all his money putting out a contract on you for defending Hamlin. First, your fellow Italians would not carry out the contract nor refund his money. Secondly, when Hamlin won last Sunday he had a heart attack and is still recovering?.I almost feel sorry for him.We also heard that he is sure to have another heart attack since we understand his blood pressure is running 190 (points won by Hamlin at Pocono) over 146 (points averaged over the past 7 races). When you see Denny at Watkins Glen you may want to ask him to lay back so that Alan has time to recover.
That has me laughing out loud man...too funny!!!!
Garrow the Guru, can you help me narrow down these six drivers to the two that have the best shot at a win Sunday? 5,18,24,29,48,99
Yo Big Jim..Out of that group, 48 and 5 is what I'm thinking.
hey mike, so whos the cheapest ringer with the most potential in the stock car challenge this week?
I'd have to say Patrick Carpentier at 12.8 or Ron Fellows at 14.8, which is same price as Robby Gordon who I'd rank ahead of those two..Carpentier was top-15 at Sonoma so if he can duplicate that at 12.8...that would be in the words of my daughter "Swwwweeeet"!
is there any chance denny doesnt return to joe gibbs racing after next season? i read somewhere in one of espn's chats that he may.
I don't think Denny Hamlin is going anywhere.
Patrick Carpentier in the 55 at a road course, top 15?
Possibly..if I had to go low, low, he'd be the place to go, go..
mike, do i NEED to get a tony stewart or jeff gordon this week, or is there a cheaper alternative?
I'm still kicking myself in the pants for getting rid of Stewart and thinking I would have the $$ the next week to pick him up again..24 will be okay, but I can live without him this week, but I can't say the same thing about Smoke.
Guru- I don't LOVE the 5 and 9 heading into this week, but since i have them at 1.3 and .7 its hard to drop them w/ Bristol and Atlanta coming up. Would you stay pat or switch em out?
I like the 5 a lot this week but he's same price as Montoya who I do rank ahead of him..The 9 is another story..I don't have a problem dropping him and coming back and picking him up for Michigan if that's what his performance calls for that particular weekend.
Is nAscar a sport
Yes it is..no sticks or balls..but it's a sport and these guys are athletes believe me.
which road race ringer will finish best this week? Thanks guru
Fellows is just so steady at the Glen...I like him a lot and Carpentier should do pretty good in the 55 too.
Are you surprised by the fact that Jeff Gordon has the same amount of wins as Jr but hasn't gotten the same amount of publicity as has Jr. they each have 1 since the beginning of 2008
The difference is Gordon has challenged for wins and Junior lately hasn't even been close...and he is the sport's most popular driver..
how can i put a decent roster together when they are charging lot of money for everyone good. any suggestions?
I think this week Jay you can start with a "floor" with the 47 and 7...or if you want to go even lower 47 and 55...and then build up from there..and you can put together a good team.
What is your take on Carpentier for Waltrip this weekend?
Top-15 to top-20 car..Did a nice job at Sonoma after a lousy qualifying run..If he qualifies better at the Glen, and he should, that equal out the fact because this track is easier there will be more guys competitive at the Glen than Sonoma.
Does the 00 have a beef with the 11? It sure looked as if Hamlin was overly aggressive in a place in the track where he shouldn't have been.
Yes, he's got a right to be miffed...probably cost him a shot at making the Chase too.
Hey Guru, huge fan of your insight and coverage! Can you rank JP Montoya, Jimmie, Smoke and Kahne?
14,42,48, and 9..and thanks for the props.
David Ragan or David Reutimann????
Like drugs man...just say no..to both..
Hey Guru. Do you think it would be worthwhile to try and swap out Johnson for Stewart. I probably would need to make another change too in order to do this. My team right now is 48,9,5,29,77.
That depends..I rank 14 ahead of 48...but I also think you need to drop the 9 and 77 more than you need to worry about 14-48..I'd also rather have Ambrose this week than the 29, which I've talked about..best thing...settle on your two "floor" drivers..add Tony and see if you can still a couple of studs to go along with him..if you don't feel comfortable about that..keep the 48 and 5..drop 9,29, and 77..for 42, 47, and 7..
Is Kahne in your top 5 at least for the glen?
Sorry, but now...I have Kahne ranked 13th.
I can pull off 14, 48, 5, 47 if I use Carpentier is it worth it?
I'd go for it ..you only live once right?..but think about swapping out 42 for the 48 at the same time.
What happens first gordon Retires or Jr gets the boot from hendrick
You got me...but neither is going to happen for 2010 so why worry about that now?
GURU!!! What do you think 700 points or better for Jimmy Johnson, Tony Stewart, Juan Pablo Montoya, Patrick Carpentier, and Robby Gordon?????
I think it's a possibility..top-15's for Carpentier and Gordon and you're there in my opinion.
Thoughts on Fellows this weekend. He will be in Hendrick car basically (09 Chevy) but does he have the crew etc for a top 10? What do you think?
I think he's got good enough equipment and crew to finish top-15.
Lets say something does come up for Boris. Wouldn't he be a PE(post entry) and receive 0 points?
10-4...way to be on the gas George!
Mark for my SCC team, which team do u like the best; a)14,42,47,29,09; B) 11,42,18,47,09; c) 11,42,5,47,7;
Toughie Jason..I'm inclined to go with A and hope for the best..I'm also intrigued by C.
Should I go stay with 20 or go with 47 for the rest of the segment?
You might suffer this week, but Logano should be pretty good at Michigan and beyond..I also have to say 47 will be a lot better at the Glen..and should be about as good at Michigan and Bristol...might not be a wrong answer here...hate to be "muddy" but there it is.
Hey Guru, Martin, Vickers or Bowyer?
Bowyer is a safer pick than Vickers on a road course.
here it is marky mark- kyle busch wins this week. bonus: mark martin in the top five.
Yo Big Mama...you big time crazy mama on 18...5 in the top-five..that I can live with..Kyle is fast enough to win, but I think they use him up because he's got to be so careful to finish..
yahoo question- 14 and 42 are locks in the B slots. for A though gordon is obvious but i dont want to go there. give me 2 better options from: 5,24,16,17,18,48,99,07,31,29. and is 7 over 47 worth the risk?
5 and 48..7 over 47 is worth the risk..but I think 47 is safer pick.
Mark: Who in the heck is Mike...
did you change your name to mike?
Okay..I give up did I miss something?
pick who u like better; 7 or 09; 29 or 47; 5 or 18; 11 or 48? Thanks for all your help!
how does the 48, 42, 5, 47, 7 sound?
Same team I currently have...so we're brilliant right?....lol...
So you really think robby is gonna do best of all the road racers???
Call me nuts...but yes.
Are any of the road race ringers driving hms equipment?
All the stuff 09 team is running has come from HMS..so count Fellows in that category.
All Knowing-All Seeing-Prophet of the Picks, are you really going to pull the trigger of Robby Gordon this week?
Yes I am...and hopefully it won't put a hole in my head!...lol...
Mark, this isn't a fantasy question but a comment: THANK YOU so much for the chats each week! You help this college student out with your advice!
Nick...thanks for the props man...you made my day..seriously..
9 or 17 the rest of the way?
I think Kahne is coming on...17 is up and down.
Mark I think in the 11 00 incident the 11 should have gotten a rough driving penalty. These guys are the best in the world. Turning a guy off a turn in the way the 11 did is just wrong. Drivers need to be in control of their car or suffer a penalty. I love agressive racing as much as anyone but the 11 was plain wrong. Your thoughts?
I think Hamlin was wrong...I also think he was driving out of his head trying to win that race for his dead grandmother..I know these guys are supposed to be machines, but they have emotions to can overload just like have...as far as penalizing...if he bumps Reutimann like that again.."Reutti" will root him out of there in one of the final ten races and that will cost Hamlin more than NASCAR could ever do...I've been around this deal a long time and the drivers know how to take care of these matters better than anyone..
Guru, can you post your top mid week picks before you have to go please?
Here's my pre-race, pre-Sunday chat top-30.......1. Tony Stewart2. Juan Pablo Montoya3. Marcos Ambrose4. Jimmie Johnson5. Denny Hamlin6. Mark Martin7. Kyle Busch8. Robby Gordon 9. Jeff Gordon10.Ryan Newman11.Kevin Harvick12.Kurt Busch13.Kasey Kahne14.Carl Edwards15.Martin Truex, Jr.16.Ron Fellows17.A.J. Allmendinger18.Greg Biffle19.Matt Kenseth20.Patrick Carpentier21.Jeff Burton22.Clint Bowyer23.Jamie McMurray24.Brian Vickers25.Max Papis26.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.27.Casey Mears28.Elliott Sadler29.Joey Logano30.David Reutimann
is Newman worth keeping this week?
Could be, but I think there are better picks this week.
I only have 4 starts left out of Stewart for the rest of the season. Use 1 this weekend or start 1 of these drivers... 20, 83, 88, 00, 6, 26, 12, 9? Thanks
I don't see any drivers in that group that could hold a candle to the 14 this week..I'd use another 14 start and look for help down the road.
Oh Great GURU you keep knocking Hornish at the Glen (he did well in IRL Road Courses) but I have him at a 1.5 which mkes it hard to drop him. Is he going to deficit for the rest of the tracks before the break?
Here's the deal..I think his price goes down after the Glen...and I think if you take him this Sunday...beware he will hurt you and leaving you bleeding...
should i drop marky for kyle???
Given what's been going on with Kyle lately? No.
Mark: Alan is going to hate me even more but I thought someone should bring up the fact that Hamlin has run at Watkins Glen 3 times and has 3 straight Top 10s...8th, 2nd and 10th.
That's why I have him ranked number five...that and some of the other strong runs he's had lately..
does kyle busch make the chase?
One more big stub of the toe and he probably doesn't...and playing safe is not what I think of when I think of Kyle Busch.
Can the 88 team lead a lot of laps here again and maybe seal the deal this time around?
Don't see it...I'd like to..but I don't see it.
SERIOUS 42 or 5
Any chance of Montoya actually winning the Nextel Cup? He's been hot lately, could he improve Nascar's diversity program by himself?
I'm not sure he's got everything to win the championship this year Guillermo...but if Chip Ganassi can keep giving him good equipment..another year or two down the road you never know..I'll say this if JPM make the Chase this year....He'll be the most agressive guy in the deal with nothing to lose and everything to gain and that will be fun to watch..He'll be playing with house money..And yes, he's improving NASCAR's diversity program with the way he's running and the way he's handled himself out of the car this year.
Yes you missed something...twice.hey mike, so whos the cheapest ringer with the most potential in the stock car challenge ...mike, do i NEED to get a tony stewart or jeff gordon this week, or is there a cheaper alternative?
Sorry about that Mike..cheapest ringer with most potential is Carpentier...Yes to Tony Stewart...Gordon I might be able to live without..
OK Nuts!!!!! I will trust ya on robby.......................u sure fellows isnt gonna be better or the 55
No guts..no glory baby!
Need 3 out of these drivers for this weekend... 20, 00, 83, 1, 12, 88, 6, 26. Thanks Guru
Wow...just noticed I went 20 minutes overtime...time flys when you're having fun...and I'm wondering where Alan in PA is?...hopefully he'll surface Sunday...if they let him out of the psych ward...lol...Talk to you again Sunday morning 10:30 eastern..until then may the force be with you....and now the sad refrain "The Guru has left the building"!
