Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks! It's a special Thursday chat because I will be unavailable to do one tomorrow. Also want to let you know that there won't be a notebook tomorrow, but there will be a new blog this afternoon, so be on the lookout. Sort of a slow week for boxing, although we do have the return of Alfredo Angulo on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights tomorrow, which should be fun. So let's talk about the busy fall. Let's get to it.

Smooth (East Coast)

Big props to Arreola for having the stones to step up to the plate against VItali; unlike a certain other boxer that talked his way into 2 title fights and backed out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

I agree. Say what you want about Arreola, but he wants this fight. He knows it's his opportunity of a lifetime. He'll be well paid and has a chance to make history.

Lawrence (Baltimore)

Do you think Chad Dawson should move down Super Middleweight to gain more exposure and fight better competition!?! I think he's highly under rated and there is more name recognition in the Super Middle Division....

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Chad fought for several years at super middle and moved up because he could no longer really make the weight. He's a lot stronger at light heavyweight. Yes, there are bigger names at 168 but what good is it if you are not at your best to fight them? The good news is that eventually some of those top guys at 168 will eventually move to 175, which should give the division some bigger star power.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, whats the reason for Latin Fury being moved back a week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

The September Latin Fury moved one week because, from what Top Rank told me, there is some really big soccer game on the weekend it was originally scheduled and it was a bad idea to go on the same weekend, which meant it would not have received a lot of attention in the Mexican media.

Brian (Sacramento, CA)

Klitschko vs. Klitschko would be the ultimate Heavyweight fight; however, they said it will never happen. Any possiblity?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

As far as they say, no, never ever. Don't count on it.

Mark (NYC)

RIP Budd Schulberg

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Yes sir. Budd was a great gentleman and a great writer. I met him at ringside many times over the years. Just a wonderful guy everyone liked and respected.

Jonathan (Northern VA)

Dan, have you heard anything about Demetrius Hopkins? I haven't read anything about him since the arrest.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I've heard nothing and, frankly, haven't asked.

Brock (Belleville)

Any chance that a BHop Adamek deal gets done early enough that Johnson-Dawson could be for the Ring belt?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Decent chance. As I detail in my blog, which should be posted shortly, Richard Schaefer is in New York today and tomorrow and one of his meetings is with Kathy Duva from Main Events to try to make the Adamek-Hopkins fight.

Jenna J (Boston, Ma)

do you think when all the egos subside that the WBO title belt will be at stake in the Pacquiao vs Cotto fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

In one word: Yes.

BJ (LA)

Dan, any update on Pavlik-Williams and Valero?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Pavlik-Williams is inching along. It seems to me it will eventually get done. Nothing new on Valero other than Arum saying he will probably fight on the Pacman-Cotto card.

Smooth ((East Coast))

How likely is Berto vs. Mosley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

That's another meeting Schaefer has in New York today. He is meeting with Lou DiBella in an effort to make the fight.

Brent (Cleveland)

Dan, That HBO piece Assault in the Ring was excellent, did you know the guy who produced it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I watched it. It was good, albeit it got a bit tedious and probably could have been trimmed by 10 minutes. But Eric Drath, who did the film, really delved into the case in detail and gained amazing access to the guys involved. I have met him a couple of times and he should be very proud of his film.

JE (Cloud 9)

Holy Crap, chat on Thursday!! Thanks Dan

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

It happens once in awhile. I figured I could either do a chat on Thursday or just skip the entire week. I figured I'd chat with the Freaks on a Thursday.

Paul (Carlsbad, CA)

do you think there will be a rematch between Bradley and Campbell? I agree it was a lopsided fight but with a controversial ending.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I very much doubt there will be a rematch. It was not a mandatory fight, so the WBO won't order a rematch. And Showtime, having seen what we all saw for three rounds, probably has no interest in a rematch. I know I don't. Bradley has a mandatory with Lamont Peterson that is supposed to happen. Nate is still a good name and can still beat a lot of guys. He could move on to something else. He'd be a serious challenge, say, to Devon Alexander in his first defense. Something like that. If Tim keeps winning and Nate can get back on track maybe a rematch down the road, but not next. No reason.

Mike (Rochester, NY)

Why didn't I see Manny win the fighter of the year award at the ESPYS?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Probably because that award was not televised.

James (Athens)

Which is more likely for Mosely, to fight Berto or Clottey or wait until after November to fight Pac, Floyd, Cotto or Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I think the Mosley-Berto fight eventually gets done for Dec. 5.

Bry (SF)

Dan, Pacquiao training in Bahamas is just because of the IRS or also to make 24/7 more interesting?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

His training camp has not been officially set as far as no. Bahamas was one possibility. They had also considered Mexico and Canada. It was an IRS thing completely.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Any news on the Super Six lawsuit from Kessler's promoter. Would hate to see anything disrupt the tourney

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Palle will sue everyone and the tournament will move forward. It would be shocking if a judge didn't allow Kessler to fight. About the best Palle can hope for is a monetary judgement.

Steve (Hartford)

Why not a Mosley/Clottey , Berto/Collazo 2 doubleheader to lead into a Mosley/Berto fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Becuase that doubleheader is insanely expensive and you're dealing with multiple promoters.

JB (Toronto)

Any chance that Roger Mayweather's legal troubles could prevent him from being in PBF's corner? If so, who is the logical replacement?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Very good chance Roger will be otherwise occupied if you know what I mean. If that happens, I bet Floyd Sr., who has been in the camp, will take over and be the head trainer for the fight.

Ron (New York)

If Glen Johnson beats Dawson, do you think he should be considered for the Hall of Fame, or should he be there already?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I love Johnson as much as anyone, but win or whatever, he's not a HOFer or even close at this point.

Smooth (East Coast)

I had no idea that Panama Lewis was still making a living as a trainer and that he helped Judah prepare for the Cotto fight. He really revealed himself to be human scum in "Assault in the Ring."

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

There are a lot of scum bags in boxing so to name him the biggest scum bag is saying something. He is, without question, in the top 2 or 3.

Sal (Chicago)

Better defense Floyd or Winky Wright?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Both terrific, but overall, Mayweather.

Matt (LA )

What is your take on Nate Campbell? I find his constant "victim" act tiresome. He sues Don King, but goes back to him. Refuses to fight heavy Guzman, then puts Funeka in the same spot. Then last week's crying after he quit. Maybe he's telling the truth about the eye, but I have problems swallowing it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Let's get something clear: Guzman refused to fight him, not the other way around.

Marc (Philly)

When Eddie Chambers beats Klitschko in December (if it happens that month) how much xonsideration does he get for Fighter of The Year

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Interesting thought. If he does beat Wlad, Eddie would have a win over the heavyweight champ, Sam Peter and undefeated Dimitrenko with two wins coming on the road in Germany. You know? I would have to give him strong consideration.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Thanks for setting it straight for Matt. Guzman was the chump in that one.

Dee (DFW TX.)

Hello Dan, who is your pick to win the Super Six tourney?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Based on the current matchups I have to make Kessler the favorite. But it's going to be a long road.

Rick (Marina)

What up Dan, How shady is the Gatti situation? I heard that Gatti recently changed his will to leave everything to his wife and the new autopsy has found new injuries. This is just crazy, she can't get away with this can she?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

It sure looks bad. He changes his will, leaves her EVERYTHING plus a life insurance poilicy and the wolrd-famous Dr. Michael Baden, who did the second autopsy finds all sorts of stuff the Canadians missed. Really fishy in Brazil if you ask me.

Jordan (NEW YORK CITY)

Dan, what's next for Khan? He should take take his mandatory against Salita...easy money for Khan. I've seen Salita fight many times in NYC, and he didn't impress anyone even when he was fighting stiffs.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I think the mandatory is due against Salita. If they don't make a deal I would think there will be a purse bid.

Brian (Sacramento, CA)

What's next for Bradley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Probably Lamont Peterson.

JB (Toronto)

You answered my question and I got two answered by Matt Mosely in the NFC East Chat two days back. This might be the greatest week of my life (don't tell my wife that!) so I'll press my luck with a follow up question. No whammies!Given the contentious relationship and bad history between Jr and Sr, could this have a negative effect on Floyd's performace?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

First off, you have a sad life if us answering your questions are the highlights of your life!! OK, seriously, if Floyd Sr. and Jr. are together for this fight and they are committed to working things out, I don't think it can do anything bad at all. Frankly, I think Floyd Sr. is a better trainer than Roger anyway.

James (Athens)

Why is Angluo still getting big exposure despite an extremely lackluuster performance against Kermit Cinturon, who's getting virtually nothing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Angulo didn't beat Cintron but he fought a tough, hard, entertaining fight first off. Also, he's back but on ESPN2, for a fraction of the money. Cintron, by winning on HBO, isn't about to fight on ESPN2 for scraps. He's in line for much bigger fights. And those take time to put together and a premium network to schedule.

Shawn ((Chicago))

Dan, some forums are posting rumors that the Mayweather vs Marquez PPV will be $24.95. Any truth to that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

That is not true. It's a $50 PPV. However, Golden Boy says there will be some of rebate program from Tecate, one of the sponsors, in which the entire cost of the PPV can be gotten back if you buy certain Tecate products. I am not sure of the exact details but that is in the works.

Bing (Philly)

Hopkins owns a win over Johnson. I've never seen the fight. Was it dominant? Is there any reason why a second fight won't be a repeat of the first?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I saw that the fight and have the tape. Believe it or not, it was on a weekend afternoon on CBS. Hopkins was IBF middleweight champ and Johnson was the mandatory and undefeated. Solid fight, Hopkins pretty much dominated though and stopped Johnson on his feet in the 11th round if memorty serves. First and only time Johnson has ever been stopped.

Brock (Belleville)

How is the Mayweather undercard shaping up as of right now? I know John-Juarez is on and Green(using his Winky Wright education)-Bika is off but how about the Funeka-Guzman or the Katsidis fight? I wouldnt mind if those 2 fights got put on and Judah got conveneintly left off.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

The card, as it stands right now, will be the main event, John-Juarez 2 and Judah-Antonio Diaz. Golden Boy is also trying to close Escobedo-Katsidis. If it all comes off like that, hell of a card and defiitely worth the money.

Walter (The Netherlands)

Hi Dan. Keep the good work up. Always great to read your pieces, especially here in a non boxing country like Holland. Quick question though, any idea what that blood disorder was that caused Chris John to pull out of the re-match against Rocky Juarez? and on whether it might effect him still in their fight in September?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

In talking to John's adviser, he had something akin to anemia, which is apparently now under control and not giving him any issues. He has been cleared to train and is doing so.

Bry (SF)

Dan, would you rather see Hopkins fight Adamek or Dawson (if he wins) in January?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Definitely Adamek. Bigger fight, bigger crowd, more meaningful fight and probably a better fight in the ring.

Dan (Philadelphia)

A correction on your Gatti note. The second autopsy which Dr. Baden reviewed was conducted by the provincial officers in Quebec. The issues were with the original Brazilian autopsy. It is incorrect to state that "the second autopsy finds all sorts of stuff the Canadians missed."

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Fair enough. I meant the Brazilians. My bad.

Wes (Natick)

Dan, I still haven't heard your prediction for the PBF JMM fight. Any chance i get it now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I have always felt Mayweather will win the fight but the offiial prediction will be made a lot closer to the fight.

Eric (North Hollywood)

Hey Dan! Thanks for the chat on Thursday. Any idea when the date the tix will be on sale for the VK vs Arreola? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I asked Klitschko adviser Shelly Finkel and he said tickets, priced from $25 to $500, will go on sale next weekend.

Dan (PA)

Have you been following Spadafora's comeback? When do you think he will get a relavent fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I have followed his various supposed comebacks, which have been then put off for one reason or another. He did recently fight and win with Pernell Whitaker in his corner as trainer. I wish the best for him but I have a hard time seeing him become a top-level junior welterweight at this stage. He may get a notable fight at some point because of his name however.

James (Athens)

Is Freddie Roach the best trainer in boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

At this moment, it's hard to argue otherwise.

Joe (New Jersey)

Could Klitschko/Arreola do Margarito/Mosley type numbers?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I'm sure Staples will have a big crowd for Klitschko-Arreola but I would be surprised if was THAT big.

Kevin (Chandler, AZ)

Dan, thanks for the Thursday chat. Can Jhonny Gonzalez make a career comeback or his starting to become an old fighter even at his younger age? Seeing Gonzalez-Vasquez live has had me drooling for a rematch ever since.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Gonzalez is an exciting fighter but just can't take a big shot. He's got a lot of mileage on his even though he is not that old. I have a hard time seeing him getting back to the top level, especially after that last knockout loss.

shrink479 (nj)

Do you give Arreola a chance?? i think it will be quick work for Vitali.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Put it like this: Arreola is a big underdog. A huge underdog. But you never know.

Mark (Windsor, CT)

Have you ever changed your prediction for a fight after seeing the fighters at the weigh in because I notice for a lot of fights you wait until after the weigh in to make your prediction.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Definitely.

David (Cape Canaveral, FL.)

D T M, How about Bradley vs. Maidana, what an action fight who would you take? I got Maidana.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Very good fight. I wouldn't so easily pick Maidana. Bradley is a lot slicker and faster than Ortiz I think and smarter in the ring. Maidana is not a guy who moves laterally at all. Bradley's style would be very tough for him.

Joe (New Jersey)

For Vargas/Trinidad didn't you say you changed your pick to Vargas at the last minute because of something that you saw? Can you elaborate?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I did change on that one. I had picked Tito from the day the fight was made until a couple of days before the fight. I had spent a lot of time that week with Vargas and been at the gym with him and such and decided to change my mind. At that time, I was the boxing writer for USA TODAY. The night before the fight I was a guest on Friday Night Fights, which were taking place at the MGM and the studio segment was there in the hotel. So on national television I changed my pick. The next night, Vargas got knocked down five times and knocked out.

lawrence (new york )

Hey Dan, no one talks about Paul Williams as the best fighter in boxing but he can be belt holder in 3 or 4 of the best divisions in boxing his insane skill and work rate i have never seen before, if he hadnt lost after a lay off to Quintana, is he top of the pound for pound list?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Paul is not regarded as the best fighter in boxing because he doesn't have the resume to be considered that at this point.

eric (chicago)

HEllo Dan, I watched the Bradley-Campbell and im hesistent to say it but i think Campbell quit and wasnt because of the cut. When the Doc held the the cut and asked him if he could see he said no, before he was even checked out he was scream to his corner stop the fight. I believe he felt what Bradley was bringin and was trying to find a way out. Your thoughts please??

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I'm defending Bradley but he did have an injury behind his eye that he says gave him spots in his eyes. I believe him when he says that. The cut isn't why the fight was stopped. It was because he said he couldn't see well out of that eye. That said, and assuming the spots were for real, he was trying to get out of the fight at that point. It is what it is.

Xavier (CT)

Let me try again, DAN, do you think Juanma will ever transcend Trinidad's popularity in PR?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

No way.

Bubba (Ottawa Il)

Dan, Whats your thoughts on the lacy-jones ppv card? Im a freak so will buy anyway, but hows the card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

You have two PPVs that night, Jones-Lacy and Donaire on the Top Rank Pinoy Power card. The Jones-Lacy card is decent. Main event, Danny Green in the co-feature, Kimbrough-Litzau and BJ Flores against a much smaller guy in Mendoza.

James (Ottawa, Ontario )

Does Bute warrant consideration if one of the big 6 pulls out due to injury or is being televised on HBO too big of a deal to pass up?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Bute wasn't invited into the tournament. He's not going to walk out on an HBO fight that is a mandatory even if he was suddenly invited. After the fight with Andrade, if he wins, anything is possible.

Alec (Nashville)

ANY chance the CA commission overturns the TKO decision in the Bradley/Campbell fight? It seems like it takes an act of Congress to get that done!

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

They've done it before, so if they look at the tape I think it will probably be overturned.

Kris Krepps (Grand Rapids MI)

How is PBF "MONEY" not on your P4P rankings at all.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Because when he retired he was dropped and has not fought yet. If he fights and wins against Marquez, at that point I'll figure it out.

Jerry (LA)

how does winning 3 rounds mean you dominated a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

It was 3-0 with ease.

Rick (Marina)

What do you make of your boy Eli's new pay raise?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

I may ask him for a loan.

Sal (Chicago)

Any word on Victor Ortiz? Is there an official retirement coming soon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Retirement? You're crazy. So the kid lost a fight, even quit, but at age 22 or whatever he is he should retire? Get real. In any case, Ortiz had wrist surgery and is probably out until at least December.

Daniel (UK)

I see Mike Jones is fighting again this weekend but again with no TV coverage! Any chance he's going to get on tv anytime soon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I would hope so.

Steve (Hartford)

so is the green- Bika fight officially dead?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

The fight is not happening.

Rick (Marina)

Juanma needs to stop fighting guys with 10 losses on there record and fight Cabarello, no matter how much money, he is one of the top guys at 122 so why not? if Juanma beats him he shuts his mouth and you get a quality victory. Boxing to me is about fighting the best. Especially if the guy keeps calling me names and keeps talking trash, Im gonna want to fight him and shut his mouth, Juanma stop being a punk and make the fight happen.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

If only it was that easy.

mike (denver)

Have you heard any news about Mike Alvarado? I would love to see him matched up against Devon Alexander or Tim Bradley. Its time to see if he can compete with the best.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

In case you missed it, he's in jail and on ice until at least next spring.

Christian (Nothern VA)

I think it is sell out city that you continue to rank B-hop #1....I know you have to see him due to his ESPN duties coupled with your own but why dont you grow a pair, stop being afraid, and tell B-hop that getting ranked at all let alone #1 is only possible if you actually fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

You're an idiot. I rank BHop 1 at 175 because he deserves it now that Calzaghe has retired. I couldn't care less if we both appear on Friday Night Fights whatsoever.

Chris (Leonardo, NJ)

Dan, I've been reading a lot about how Haye backed out of the fights with the K boys due to unfair contracts and how they wanted options on him ect. How is it then that Vitaly - Arreola got done so quickly and smoothly? I don't recall any of their opponents having any issues with the contracts. In my opinion Haye knew he had bitten off more than he could chew and wimped out. How about you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

The Klitschkos took options like anyone would do in a big heavyweight title fight against a non-mandatory. Haye didn't like it. Too bad for him. Arreola has people who understand the business promoting and managing him. When you deal with people who know the business making deals is not always so hard. The same can't be said for somebody like Adam Booth, who manages Haye and does so very poorly.

Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, thanks for the early chat this week. I won't be available tomorrow either. Are you going to Lollapalooza too?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

No, my family is paying a visit -- although it ought to be just as chaotic as Lollapalooza.

Brendan (philadelphia, pa)

how can bob arum say in, "assault in the ring", that luis resto should never be forgiven for what he did yet he still promotes margarito?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Probably because he did that interview before Margarito and Capetillo were busted.

Bing (Philly)

I agree Floyd shouldn't be on the P4P rankings. But doesn't he warrant a spot in the divisionals? Yes, he retired but nobody, including yourself, took that seriously. How long was his layoff...a year? You got dudes ranked that have been inactive for longer than that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Mayweather has not fought since late 2007. I do not have anyone ranked with that kind of layoff. Generally, a year or so out of the ring gets you dropped unless there is some sort of extenuating circumstance.

steven (louisville)

will the entire super six tourney be on showtime or do you think the finals will be on ppv?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

The entire tourney is planned for regular Showtime.

Kevin (VA Beach)

Dan,I know you hate to hear this nonsense, but as long as Roy Jones is willing to step between the ropes and charge me 39.95 to watch it, I'll be there 100% of the time. Just so you can't say you've seen NO interest in the fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I have no problem with that. If you're a Roy fan, and there are lots of you, I hope you get a great fight and a great show. I have no issue with Jones fighting or taking these sorts of fights. God bless him if it's what he wants to do.

Luke (Danbury, CT)

Our local paper interviewed Delvin after his fight and he said that his trainer stated that they were up going into the last round. Why would a trainer do that in such a close fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

I have no idea.

Luke (Danbury, CT)

Hi Dan, Harold Lederman sat behind me at the Rodriguez/Hlasthwayo fight. He was willing to chat and sign autographs with everybody. He came across as a real nice guy....very knowledgeable.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Harold is a great guy, just a regular dude who loves boxing, knows every rule and is a good judge.

Patrick (Florida)

Sorry Dan, just read your article on the Vitali-Arreola fight. You cleared up the HBO question. I only asked because the first article I read did not mention television. Should have gone to you first. Keep up the good work

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Thanks. HBO has been interested in that fight from the outset.

Jose Perez (New York)

What's up with celestino talking so much crap about juanma??

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

He wants the fight and I don't blame him. He can't really make a lot of money anywhere else.

John (New Jersey)

Mayweather/Marquez undercard looks great. You would think Arum will try to match right? This could be the start of us getting some quality PPV's again.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Not that it is a competition, but Arum has told me multiple times he wants a bag up undercard for Pacquioa-Cotto. If Soto is in a solid fight, Valero is in a solid fight and they make Alfonso Gomez vs. Soto Karass, he will have achieved his goal.

Taylor (Salt Lake City, UT)

Dan, do you agree that instant replay in boxing would be appropriate only to define whether a cut/blow was a valid punch or not, but without disrupting the referee's managment or flow of the fight. A commision may review the tape afterwards and issue a no contest, but not award a win. Agree? Differences?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I don't agree. If they're going to use replay, it must be used in that instance between rounds.

Dan (New Jersey)

Dan, wanted to thank you for all you hard work in boxing. One question: What do think of vivian harris chances in the future and in next weeks main event? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

He'll probably win next week's ESPN2 fight because he's fighting a woeful opponent. Beynd that, I do not think much of Vivian's future in major fights.

wil (houston)

is cotto bringing in a new trainer? he could probably use someone with some experience in a big fight like this

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

No, he is not bringing in a new trainer. Every week people ask that. Why? He's happy with Joe Santiago and that's the way it is until he says otherwise.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

If he doesn't set up a fight in the next month or two, yes, he will be dropped. Same goes for Daniel Santos.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Isn't Arum doing a disservice to both Lopez and Gamboa by feeding them to each other down the line, rather than getting them the bigger fights and title shots that they can get (and handle) right now?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Not at all. By the time time Bob is done building it, Lopez-Gamboa will be a big fight.

Paul (NYC)

Do you beleive the only reason Golden Boy Signed Vivian Harris was to use him as an opponent to rebuild Victor Ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I am not sure but they didn't have to sign him for that purpose. They could have gotten him without signing him.

Don (Buffalo) (Buffalo)

Dan - why didn't you comment on the "Fight Night" fights in your Monday scorecard? I was looking forward to your comments on the fights - which were very entertaining.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I have no idea what you are talking about. I had capsules on the fights from last Friday night in the scorecard, like I do every week.

Eddie (San Diego (Whale's Vagina))

I know Freddie is the favorite for trainer of the year so far, but let's not forget about Naazim

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Naazim is also a terrific trainer.

Brock (Belleville)

I see Latimore is fighting in St Louis soon so I wanted to get a Cory Spinks update as well. Does Cintron look likely and is the location determined?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Cintron and Spinks is just a lot of talk. No network wants the fight and without money for it, it won't happen.

Andy (Ventura)

Hey Dan, Do you have any idea what Vic Darchinyan will do next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Gary Shaw, Vic's promoter, told me Vic will return to 115 pounds and defend his titles there.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

No idea why he's fighting other than he is a fighter. Diaz has been very, very inactive but it should be a fun fight. Toss up it seems to me.

steven (louisville)

i know that angulo is a big favorite in this fight but do you think rosado has a chance at all?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

I think Rosado has a slight chance, but I don't count him out. He's pulled some upsets. Beat Ouma, beat James Moore, dropped Guerrero. I think it's an excellent FNF main event.

mike (eugene, oregon)

Dan what was your major in college, journalism? english?. I'm an aspiring Boxing writer myself

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I majored in history, but took a handful of the journalism courses my school offered and also worked at my college newspaper, did an internship in my college's sports information office and interned at the local newspaper during my junior year. I had plenty of hands on experience when I went for my first newspaper job after college.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

Do you see Marco Antonio Barerra fighting again? If so, what are his options?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I'd actually be surprised if Barrera didn't fight again. He has a great name and can always fight in Mexico or a go overseas to test a younger guy. Plus he's with King. Frankly, it wouldn't shock me to see him feed Barrera to Devon Alexander, for example.

John (Vegas)

Why do boxing writers assume if you win three rounds of a fight its inevitable that you will win all twelve?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

It is simply my opinion. It has nothing to do with me being a writer. It is my opinion. Let me repeat that. It is my opinion. If you don't agree, that's fine. But in case you missed it -- it is my opinion.

Labe (TN)

Roy Jones versus Jeff Lacy...joke of a fight between an old Roy Jones and a badly faded Jeff Lacy. RJJ KO no later than round 6?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

I do not think Roy gets a knockout.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

And who says Bradley-Campbell would have gone 12? The way it was going, Campbell would have been lucky to get through 6.

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

That I agree with.

sk (Arlington, VA)

I think what Haye said was no just options but that he'd be forced to beat both brothers ... that both seems like an unfair thing to ask of Haye, and something that the Klitschkos would not ask of him ... thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

When you have options, you make the fights. So they would have made him fight a Klitschko, which, by the way, would be by far and away -- BY FAR - his most lucrative fights.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Dan, just one question: is it your opinion?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Yes, it is my opinion. Thanks for asking.

Pacquiao Bandwagon (Oaktown, CA)

Master of the Freak-a-Zoids,I know Pacquiao has a big following in the Bay Area. Do you ever see Big Bob bringing him to the Bay Area to close out his career with a fight at AT

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Not sure about him fighting there, but they have added a stop in SF on the Cotto-Pac media tour.

Paul (alabama)

Dan, i bet you've been living your life scared the whole time. you're such a punk. you rank these guys in your top 10? amir khan at 5??? are you freakin' serious. dude has no chin. since he thinks he's so tough, put him in against holt or bradley.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

You're a joke.

Brock (Belleville)

It isnt that Bradley won the 3 rounds as much as the convincing fashion that he won the rounds as well as how badly Campbell was fading in only the 3rd round even prior to the cut.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Agreed.

jeff (Phoenix)

Regarding Angulo, if there is a good way to lose he did it. He fought a top 10 guy with huge pop and was never down or seriously hurt. Angulo was competitive in all rounds and came on strong in the end. He did lose a decision but lessons that can be learned from that fight are numerous. I like him more after that fight and am interested to see him again.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

You make excellent points.

Beckham (Chicago)

Steve Bunce said they are planning to put the semifinals and finals of the Super Six on CBS (owner of Showtime). Have you heard anything about this? And can we expect fights being replayed on CBS?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

First I have heard of that. I seriously doubt they would be live on CBS. I suppose it's more likely CBS would show replays later on.

Rudy (Chicago)

Any word on Abner Mares?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Abner will be back on Aug. 27 on Golden Boy's Fight Night Club on Versus.

Eric (North Hollywood)

Will Khan stay @ 140 to defend his belt or will he move back to 135?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

He's staying at 140.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Why so much anger, Paul?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Exactly. Some of the Freaks really need to learn to get their anger under control.

Chris (Vancouver)

Hey D$. Thanks for the thursday chat. Helping my painfully slow day at work go a little quicker. Im sure you mentioned it at some point but what ever happened to that purposed Solis-Johnson heaveyweight fight? Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

That fight has been rescheduled and will be on Top Rank's Oct. 10 Latin Fury card in New York.

samurai (Minnesota)

Who is Gamboa fighting next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Whyber Garcia on Oct. 10.

James (Athens)

Don't worry about Paul: He's from Alabama. It's actually quite amazing he's able to read and use a computer.

Jorge (East Los Angeles)

Dan, I got to meet Devon last week at the Agua Caliente casino(btw a great venue), what a great kid and he was extremely humble. I thought he looked pretty good in the ring against an akward opponent in Witter. Any word out of his camp who they are looking at next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Devon is a terrific kid. You're right -- humble and hard working. Very focused. He looked about as good as anyone can look against the human eyesore, I mean Witter. I talked to his trainer/manager Kevin Cunningham the day after the fight and they are ready for whatever. He mentioned guys like Nate, Judah and some others. They want to be active and would love to defend at home in St. Louis.

josh (ny)

why do you still have israel vazquez ranked, he has been inactive almost as long as floyd?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

He was injured. When he gave up the 122 title and then the Marquez 4 fight fell through, I dropped him a week or two ago.

Jarrod (Indiana)

Dan, i know you mentioned Green and Bika were off...what was the reason?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Green is instead taking a ShoBox fight in October against Victor Oganov.

Quentin (hACKENSACK)

Why was Allen Green excluded from the Super Middleweight tourney?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

They rolled with six guys. He wasn't one of them. He didn't have a pre-ordained right to be in it and, frankly, based on his activity level and who has has fought, didn't really deserve it if there were only going to be six fighters. Or should I say he didn't deserve it any more or less than some of the other guys.

Turk (DC)

I'm dissappointed that Arum is now keeping Gamboa and Juanma on his own PPVs. I think they are the kind of fighters that could attract fans to the sport and should be on the largest platform for people to see, not the smallest.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

It's not Bob. Believe me, if HBO or Showtime came to him and said we want those guys on this fall, they would be on this fall. Neither network has the dates or budget and Bob isn't going to sit around and not have his guys fight. He's out there building them and making events. He doesn't sit around and wait for a network handout. He is proactive.

Amir Khan (London)

Hey Dan, i just wanted to thank you for putting me in your top 10, even though i got knocked the *** out by a looping puncher like Prescott

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Don't sweat it kid. Many, many, many fighters are ranked who have been knocked out. It's just that some Freaks are too stupid to understand that one knockout loss does not mean a guy can't fight or doesn't deserve a second chance, especially after he easily beat a legit top 10 fighter after being knocked out.

richard (oxford, united kingdom)

Dan, just watched a DVD replay of tito vs de la hoya. Just wondering why they never had a rematch after such a close/controversial fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

They could never agree on the split of the money. They tried many times to make it, more times than I care to recall since I sure wrote about it enough.

Taylor (Salt Lake City, UT)

Dan, my little girl watched Gatti-Ward I with me this last weekend...can she be elevated from "Interim" Freak to "Regular" Freak?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Yes. Congrats.

Ivan (Chicago IL)

What ever happened to the Erik Morales comeback?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

He still wants to fight I am told, but it won't be in August as was originally talked about. I do not know when he will fight.

Bing (Philly)

Buy or sell: Ricky Hatton will fight again

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Buy all day long.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

You know, 140 is starting to look rather interesting. Bradley, Holt, Alexancer and Kahn. Campbell can still fight, and of course there is still the one and only Ricky Hatton.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

It's a very good division with lots of solid fighters. You forgot guys like Kotelnik, Peterson and Maidana, for example.

Kevin (Chandler, AZ)

Quintana-Phillips isn't the way I saw boxing on Versus going out...any rumors to other networks entering the fray?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Unfortunately, no. Phillips-Quintana isn't a bad fight or anything, but it doesn't exactly get me pumped up either.

Taylor (Salt Lake City, UT)

No opponent for BJ Flores yet? The guy can't get a meaningful fight. He's developing more rust than my treadmill.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

He's fighting Epifanio Mendoza, a slower, smaller guy who has not looked so great recently.

quentin (hACKENSACK)

Will ESPN bring Wednesday Night Fights back next year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

As far as I know that is not in the plans.

Dan (New Jersey?)

What do think Pawel Wolak vs. Vanes Matryrosan Oct 10?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Wolak is not taking the fight.

Pete (NYC)

Noticed Pete "Kid Chocolate" Quillin is headlining a Winky Wright show on Aug 19 in NY at a nightclub. Is Quillin under contract with Winky? And where's he been lately?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

No, Quillin is with Cedric Kushner, who is working on the card with Winky's people. Quillin was out for awhile after hand surgery.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Blog is up Freaks. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4381313

Gus (New City, ny)

Hi Dan, what's the latest on Michael Katsidis? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Hopefully, he will be fighting Vicente Escobedo on Sept. 19 under Mayweather and Marquez.

Jorge (East Los Angeles)

Dan, There's a lot of talk that Angulo has a spot on HBO in November after he wins tom night. Any word on possible opponents that HBO is looking at?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

He will be on the Dawson-Johnson 2 undercard on HBO on Nov. 7 but I have not yet heard of the opponents being discussed.

Andy (Ventura)

Dan, you ever think of posting your predictions on Youtube?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Not at all. Actually, it would be a violation of my contract with ESPN.

Lee- Texas [via mobile]

Pavlik will get slaughtered by Williams. What say you.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I say let them make the fight before we get into that aspect of it.

Sam (NJ)

When do training camps start for Cotto and Pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Cotto's has already started. Pacquiao should be starting sometime this month.

Zach (MPLS)

Dan, I watched Adamek-Briggs I

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Yeah? So?

Raul (Las Vegas )

If Marquez wins who do you think he would fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Obviously, he would have a ton of options. But if Pacman beats Cotto wouldn't you want to see Pacquiao-Marquez 3?

steven (louisville)

will valuev haye be on ppv or anything here in the states?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

TBA.

Martin Rodriguez (NYC)

Something tells me Rosado upsets Angulo tomorrow!

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

If he does, it certainly won't be his first upset win.

Andy (Ventura)

Hey Dan, you are the only boxing writer I trust. Is there any boxing writer out there that you trust besides yourself?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I really appreciate that. Obviously, I trust what I write, but there are several dependable writers who get their facts right and check their sources, people like Kevin Iole, Lance Pugmire, Dougie Fisher, George Willis and several other guys.

George (Chino, CA)

Who is the co-main event on this Friday Night Fights. Im lookong forward seeing Angulo, I think he is in for a good scrap.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Anthony Dirrell, Andre's brother.

Andy (Ventura)

Dan, complete this sentence - The most overrated fighter in boxing today is ...?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

David Haye.

Jon (Worcester, Ma)

Dan, how do you feel about HBO giving Alfredo Angulo another guarnteed fight on the network, when he was badly outclassed by Kermit Cintron? Is this just a case of the network trying to stand by one of there "prospects" even though none of there so called "next generation" has done anything in the last 6 months? Angulo seems like a one dimensional straight forward brawler who isnt that quick, and his power has been overrated. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

I have no problem with him appearing again. He was in an excellent fight against a guy who was way more experienced than him and he still hung in there despite being ill. As for him being a straight forward brawler, that's what a lot of viewers like to watch. What's wrong with that? Should one very respectable loss to a good fighter mean he can't appear again on HBO even after what figures to be a solid win tomrorrow night on ESPN? That's a bit harsh isn't it?

Kent (St. Catharines)

Who does Lance Pugmire write for? To be honest I have never heard of him before you mentioned him.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

LA Times.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

....and the most underrated?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

There are a few guys -- Glen Johnson, Humberto Soto, Sergio Martinez and Hozumi Hasegawa all fall in that category for me.

joel julio (columbia)

just checkin' in pops

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Always great to hear from you son.

scoob (Gb)

hey Dan'o'vision. what's your thoughts on maccarinelli. he's only 28, but do you think he's done.

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Done in terms of being significant in his division. Can he still fight on and win against lesser guys? Sure. But not against the better guys at cruiserweight, not with that glass chin.

Dave (Philadelphia)

Dan,Nice to see you mentioned the Liakovich-Brewster match- I was always a big fan of that fight. I always liked how Liakovich, under extreme pressure in the 7th, sacrificed the point and took a knee to gain a little respite and breathing room and allow himself at least a chance to go the distance. Given the result, the strategy worked!

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

You're right. It's an underrated classic.

Ryan (Albany)

Sorry Dano! been stuck in a meeting and just got out in time for the chat! Does Paulie Malignaggi have a shot against Diaz? For some reason, I just see him folding under Diaz's pressure. Upstate NY misses you!

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Paulie is certainly capable of outboxing Diaz. It won't be easy and I think he's the underdog but he can do it with the right plan of attack. Plus who knows how Diaz will be after suffering such a bad knockout in his last fight?

Jon (Worcester, Ma)

I agree that one loss to a former champion shouldnt dismantle a fighter's career, in fact its a shame that more fighter's arent willing to risk an undefeated record to get the experience needed to move towards the top, so i apologize for being so critical. What have you heard about Visly Jirov (sp) making a return? I'm not sure if he has anything left at this point, but he was fun to watch.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Jirov is back with his old manager and hoping to give it another go at cruiser instead of heavyweight.

Greg P ( Staten Island,NY)

Dan, any chance of R Bailey getting a highlight one punch KO for the belt on FNF's...can he make any noise at this stage?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

One thing about Randall is that dude can punch as good as anyone I have ever seen with one shot. So if he hits anyone right, they're probably gone, which is why he has a chance against Urango.

roberto (laredo,tx)

DTM, going to my first professional fight in houston, tx aug.22nd. Are you going to be in h-town to cover fight? If so, do you when and what times is the weight-in?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Awesome. Hope you have a great time. I will not be making the trip for that one. But when I was in Houston for the JMM-Diaz card in February the folks really turned out for the fight and I had a really good time in Houston. Not sure when the weigh in is exactly, but probably Friday afternoon around 4ish.

Andrew (Long Island City, NY)

Why does Mosley get a pass for his steroid use? Anyone associated with BALCO was a hardcore user. In a sport as dangerous as boxing shouldn't cheating be taken very seriously? What about now, do they test for HGH?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Couple of things. He doesn't get a "pass" because we don't forget he did it. I happen to believe Shane when he says he did it only for the Oscar rematch. On top of that, at least he finally came clean and admitted he did it. But I don't forget he did it. But I also don't believe what he has done in his career should be forgotten about either.

Brian (Cambridge, MA)

Dan, are there any future fights planned for the MGM Grand at Foxwoods to follow up on the excellent Froch-Taylor fight? I thought the atmosphere there was pretty good.

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

They don't have anything scheduled at the moment but I'm sure they'll have other fights there.

Sean (NJ)

Toney-Jirov was a classic fight! Though I doubt he has anything left at this point...

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

One of the best fights I've ever been at.

Lennow Lewis (Hall of Fame)

I got knocked out twice in my prime.....guess I was not worthy of being ranked!

Sancho (ca)

Dan any news on jorge Linares...also view him as extremely underrrated...what you think???

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

He's not underrated. People think highly of him but he is chronically inactive, although he just fought a month or so ago in Mexico and stopped a lesser opponent in a title defense. I think he's a tremendous talent and needs exposure very badly. Promoters like Golden Boy and DiBella have tried to work him and his Japanese promoter but it has gone nowhere.

Ryan (Albany)

Can you work on getting FNF back at the Saratoga City Center? Had a great time there last year and its a great boxing town! Thanks!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Would love it. The first fight I ever covered was in that building.

Eric (MA)

Dan, does Showtime tell their commentators to put over the belts so much on the telecasts, or is it more the decision of the on-air guys to try to add more significance by hyping up titles?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I do not know which it is, but Showtime does hype the belts way too much in my opinion.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I update that schedule virtually every single day. It's a lot of work but I am glad people appreciate it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Yes.

Greg P ( Staten Island,NY)

Dan, do you think J Clottey will be offered any big fights soon...it would be a shame not to capitalize on his great showing against Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

I'm sure he'll get another opportunity but it won't be easy. Who wants to fight him? He brings no fans, no money and a rough night at the office.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

Ever wonder why people on this chat make personal attacks at you? I mean really, If you don't like oponions, rankings, blogs or whatever, go to some mom and pop site where every headline has a question mark after it or somewhere you can "remember where you heard it first!" about 4 guys no one cares about...

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Agreed. Reading the questions and comments that are sent in sometimes makes me wonder about humanity and the utter lack of even the most basic manners or respect for other people. It's actually pretty sad. I slog through it but it's absurd at times. I wish I could post some of the disgusting, pathetic, curse-ridden, racial, profane, discriminating comments some idiots send in.

Alex (Sylmar, CA.)

how many division would you say a fighter has to dominate before being considered p4p status?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

He doesn't have to fight in multiple divisions to be considered.

Mike (TCV)

if hopkins v adamek will be made you think is gonna be on PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

No, it would be regular HBO most likely.

Scott (Raleigh, NC)

Dan, dumb question, but is there a certain type of system or software you use to keep all your info/schedule/weight classes/whatever else straight? To Robert's point; almost always accurate and up to date....just wondering

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Just good old fashioned organization and some word files.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Do you know if the Top Rank October 10 card is planned to be held in the actual MSG arena or is it the smaller one?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

It will be in the Theater, the smaller, 5,000-seat room.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Do you know Jim Bagg? Is he as humorous in person as he is in his Ring pieces?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

I do know him and have for years. He's not nearly as funny in person.

Brandon (Redondo Beach)

Mosely is one of my top 3 all time fighters but at this stage in his career I believe a fight with Berto will be tough for him because of Berto's movement... I know you don't like discussing proposed fights until they're signed but any thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

It's an interesting fight. Mosley and Berto are both fast. Mosley is a bigger puncher I believe. It's just a really good fight between an older star and a younger guy hoping to become a star. Dangerous for both guys. But if the Mosley who showed up against Margarito shows up against Berto, Berto is going to have a lot of problems.

jeff (Phoenix)

I thought it noteworthy that Arreola's camp said that Vitaly was the first opponet he respects...If that is true this seems like a hell of a jump in competition and Arreola knows it.

Frank (FL)

For evidence on how weak the middleweight division is: the RING now ranks Winky Wright in their top 10 despite not having won a fight since 2006.

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

As do I. Middleweight is a wasteland right now.

Joe (New York)

If Berto and Mosley fight, then let's see Clottey/Collazo.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Clottey-Collazo is an interesting fight, but it would cost some money and wouldn't sell a lot of tickets anywhere. It would be a great HBO or PPV undercard fight.

Ronak (NY)

Would a catchweight fight between Hatton and Mosley interest you?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

No, unless I was interested in watching an execution, which I am not.

Jonathan (Northern VA)

Any chance boxing comes back to the Armory in DC? I've heard that the shows at the Patriot Center aren't worth it due to the size of the arena and the price that accompanies it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

I wish boxing would come back to the armory. I think Top Rank would make a smart move by bringing the Peterson brothers back home.

Ronak (NY)

You think arreola vs klitschko will get some mainstream hype?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

I think it might. Big fight, big arena, good West Coast buzz. An American fighting for a major title. It's got a lot going for it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

I'm sure when the day comes that if they actually fight each other, it will find a home on HBO or Showtime. It's a really good fight.

George (Chino, CA)

So am I wrong to be really excited about Top Rank 08/15/09 PPV. I think the whole card is great and competitive. I think its a must see. I actually know or have seen in person every fighter on the card.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

If you dig the matchups, then sure, get excited! Donaire is one of the best smaller fighters in the world. Luevano-Concepcion is a solid fight. Anthony Peterson is coming off an injury and not in too tough, but he's a top young fighter. If you dig it, enjoy.

Marie (Orlando)

If you had to bet a million on either one in their next fight, would you take Vitali over Arreola, or Wlad over Eddie C.

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Vitali over Arreola.

Roy (Austin, TX)

Dan, You gonna buy Lacy vs Jones Jr on PPV, should we the fans buy it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

I'll buy it but I am not normal.

Jamal (Hartford)

Did Gary Shaw screw up by not building up Bad Chad in CT?

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

Chad had a lot of fights before he ever went with Gary remember that. That said, it would have been great to see him build a bigger fan base at home.

Mark (Brooksville, Fl.)

Dan,you've mentioned that RJJ, with a win, will next head to Austrailia. RJJ has been a fav of mine but realistically why does he continue???

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

He fights because he wants to, pretty simple. If he wins and Danny Green wins on the undercard they have talked about fighting each other in Australia, where Green is from. It would be a big fight there and Roy could make a substantial payday compared to what he is making here right now.

Jack (New York)

Is Brian Minto vs. Donnell Holmes a sleeper fight for good action in heavyweight division? Any TV coverage?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

No, but it is going to be on an Internet PPV. Check my schedule for the site.

nexoticunique (nayarit mexico)

how come some people including yourself called PAQUIAO the best p4p when u said according to you PAQUIAO lost both fights againts JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ..

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

Because they were close enough to accept the official decisions and because Manny has proven himself beyond those two fights with lots of other great wins in the past several years, be it De La Hoya, Hatton, Barrera twice, Morales twice, etc...

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Remember, no notebook tomorrow and no chat tomorrow, but I'll be back with you on Aug. 14, when I will chat with you from lovely Bristol, Conn. I am headed there next week to appear on Friday Night Fights. Have a great weekend. Peace.
