Good morning one and all... what's going on? Are we ready for some fantasy baseball chattage? We've got 60 minutes to take your questions, and no Andy Rooney at the end to steal three of those precious minutes, so let's get started. Who, pray tell, is on first?
Alex Rios, picked up by the Sox. What are the implications for the Sox outfield. Who loses time? Is Snider worth the pick up for the Jays? Thanks, love the chat
From the Sox perspective, Rios will likely get the CF time. It's more of an impact for 2010, as now the team won't have to bring back Dye and/or Thome, freeing up cash there. Pods loses out in this deal, methinks. As for Snider, he's bound to get a few extra ABs now, but I think there's better OF bats to be found.
Mark Reynolds didn't homer last night--when will he break out of this terrible slump?
Oh, Brian! LOL.
Hi AJ, any more news on Happ's move to the pen or is it still all up in the air? Also, would you start him tonight against the Cubs (Harden)?
Happ is safe and I would start him tonight. Moyer is the one who will get the hook to the pen with Pedro coming.
Who's a better start from here on out...kershaw, weaver, or oswalt?
Weaver (Jered) is - although Kershaw will have better individual starts, he'll also have some of the worst as well.
Need help please! Keeper league - Do you like Holland or Anderson better?
I like Anderson better, especially since I can't really have a ton of faith in Texas pitchers in that oppressive heat season after season.
Bakers or Wieters down the stretch? 14 team h2h league.
I'm all for the Marlins players, as they head for a pennant race with the Phils. Wieters was never, to me, a good option for 2009.
So I have Podsednik. Would you drop him for Coghlan, Dukes, C. Ross, Pagan, Matsui, or Parra?
Yes on most counts... I think he gets severe playing time dropoff - and while I might not jump for joy with Pagan or Parra, the rest I probably would make the move without hesitation.
Are guys like E. Aybar and E. Cabrera worth spots on steals-needy teams in shallow leagues?
Absolutely, Ray. This is the time of year when you have to target specific categories and not worry so much about the "best players." If you need SB, then get those guys who run. A 40 HR-120 RBI guy isn't going to help you for the next two months if you already have a hearty lead in those categories.
You eating what Carl Pavano's cooking?
Not quite. Pavano is a spot-start guy to begin with, and I have to see him perform well against a team he's not 4-0 against before I bite.
No chance Russell Martin gets hot, right?
Always a chance... worth the risk? Probably not.
Jhoulys Chacin's line today?
Pirates aren't the most formidable lineup - I'll guess at 5 IP, 6 K, 2 ER.
Quentin, McCutchen, or R.Davis rest of way? Thanks!
McCutchen is the guy I'd want... from what I've heard he actually has a green light, and is actually smart enough to not abuse it. I like that kind of poise from a young player.
Cut Latos now, if you need the spot, or is there more goodness coming? His start apparently got pushed back a day (to face Pujols and co) due to a sore wrist, and he only has 2-3 starts left this season.
If you need to make a move, say because a player you covet might not be around in a week or two... go for it. Latos has only two starts in him b4 the Pads shut him down anyway.
Which Gil Meche shows up when he returns from the DL? Worth the gamble?
If you're considering a Royals starter at this point of the year, then you probably need to gamble. I think he'll be OK, but I wouldn't start him first time out of the gate, just to be safe.
Pitcher for hitter question- Which side wins, Javy Vasqeuz or Carlos Beltran in a keeper
Beltran. Hitters always win in a keeper.
Is David Wright still a keeper in a two keeper league given his lower than expected power numbers?
Totally. Wright has still performed at a top-25 level this season with absolutely no protection in the lineup, and I am sure he'll have tons more next season with off-season moves and the return of the rest of the injured Mets.
Tejada, Asdrubal Cabrera, or Marco Scutaro? Thanks for the answers!
I've been high on Scutaro all season, and I'm not jumping ship now. Plus, he's one of the few players that not only puts up stats but is actually fun to root for, even if he isn't on your own fantasy team.
What up with the always underrated Randy Winn?
He has always been underrated, but I think age and Nate Scheirholtz' imminent return has really killed his value for the rest of 09.
Love your chats AJ, off the top of your head top 5 keeper pitchers for 2010.
Tim Lincecum, Dan Haren, Roy Halladay, Felix Hernandez, Johan Santana
I picked up Garland in my 10 team H2H league to replace Big Z ... what do you think of him for the rest of the year? Thanks!
I'd actually rather go with someone like Volstad or Niemann. Not sold on Garland personally.
Do you think B.J. Upton's move to the 9 spot is permanent with Bartlett hitting as well as he has recently or will he get it back if he shows signs of life? Thanks!
I think this may be the way is rolls the rest of the way. I actually liked him better in the 5-hole, but this makes Upton the "second-leadoff hitter" much like the role worked for Cano in the past. It will cut his ABs by about 40-50 the rest of the way, but that might not be a horrible thing.
Will I ever make it back to the big leagues?
Absolutely, but I still think Smoak gets first dibs.
Bay or Damon next year. Is it close?
I need to know where Damon ends up, because I doubt he's back with the Yankees. That's why I hate keeper questions this time of year... too much can change in the off-season and I don't know why leagues are in such a hurry to make these decisions.
Tim Hudson's most recent setback basically spells the end of his return being anything usable in fantasy terms, correct?
He still might make it back in time for September, but you'd have to be in a world of hurt to care.
AJ- freaking out. About to go an ultra sound with my wife. Boy or girl???
Train -Repeat after me: Healthy. After that, it matters not.
What's the deal with Trent Oeltjen? Is he a good fill in for Justin Upton?
Can't argue with the production so far. I doubt it lasts at this level, but the talent is legit.
Well, keeper league questions can be relevant, especially in light of trades for teams preparing for the playoffs vs next year. With that said, shallow keeper league, do you prefer top-tier players (Johan, Miggy Cabrera) or players who have gained lots of value (Mark Reynolds, A Hill)? We lose our pick in the round that's the average of this and next year's ADP.
I understand, but you have to take a huge leap of faith deciding today - especially with players you know are likely to be in a completely different situation next year. In those cases, I think you have to simply go with the player you personally have more confidence in - meaning the top-tier guys.
Who would you rather have at catcher...Soto, Napoli, Montero, or Iannetta?
I'm in the Montero camp right now, with Iannetta a close second. Napoli just isn't getting the PT, and I'm not convinced Soto will be "right" again this year.
Seeing your comment on Royals pitchers .. should I trade Greinke for Wandy ?
I'd consider that move. Not that either is bad by any means, it's just I think run support and arm fatigue will plague Zack more than Wandy.
Ummm Cano has a grand total of 3 at bats in the 9 hole over the past years. And how is 40-50 LESS at bats for Upton a good thing?
Dazed, it was a comment to the strategy that the Yankees used in Cano's rookie season - don't be too literal. And 40-50 AB less would be a good thing if his batting average suffers, as was posited as the reason for the move in the first place.
The other managers in my keeper league are determined to veto all prospects-for-veterans deals, regardless of contracts, on the grounds that they're "unfair" to people who play "the right way." I should find a new league next year, right?
I think that's a very good idea. These owners clearly have no business of playing in a keeper league.
Do you avoid talking about some of your players so you don't jinx them?
I am under no delusion that I wield that kind of power, Ben. Now, ix-nay on the illedge-May.
Do you see Adrian Gonzalez ever getting out of SD? It seems like a waste of talent as he never gets anything to hit.
It is tough to watch a guy of his talents going to waste. He should be worth far more than No. 51 (where I currently rank him amongst hitters) but I think he'll still be in a SD uniform until the trade deadline next season, anyway...
Jake Fox is sitting there? Do you think he is worthy of a pickup right now or is Aramis going to be back soon?
I think Aramis is headed back to the DL, so grab Fox sooner than later.
AJ son, what do you think about Pedro's return to the Phils? Are you buying? Alright, now everybody, AAYYYEEEEE MAJIDE!
I'd buy him for one start, maybe two... but I don't think he has lasting success.
Really? You're not saying anything about me today? Hmmm.
What's to say, other than the obvious... value rising and two home runs is really solid outing. You could well end the year reaching the top 25 at this pace.
Is it time to target Haren while his value has gone down or is this the way he's going to be from here on out?
I would. I still think he finishes the season with a 2.20 ERA and 15 wins.
Dilemna: I'm in a keeper league and I have Wieters. I have a great shot to win the league but Wieters is killing me in the C spot...Montero is available...what should i do??
Worry about today today. Worry about tomorrow tomorrow. You may lose Wieters, but what good is that if you end up in 10th place for the next 10 years?
AJ buddy, you diggin this whole showmance with Jeff and Jordan? Me no likey
Lay off the sushi, Piven... I think all that mercury has gotten to your head.
Keeper league..need help on my rookie keeper..keep one of these: Holland, Tillman, Latos, Niemann.
For the longterm, I like Latos. Wish he was in a different organization, but the skills are self-evident.
With the OF production such a mess this year (Hamilton, Soriano, Sizemore, Upton), who are your top 3 OF's for next year?
Right now, I'd go with the speed guys - Crawford, Bourn, Ellsbury -- along with Braun and Kemp. Speed is not nearly as streaky as power.
Weaver/Happ/Rollins...FENCE...Gallardo/Choo/Drew. Which side are you on?
I'd side with the Yo-Ga trio.
What kind of power outfielder could I expect in return for the speedy Nyjer Morgan?
rank these players for the rest of the year. Inge, Doumit, Soto, Montero
Montero, Doumit, Inge, Soto.
usa over mexico at the azteca stadium tomorrow?
I'll settle for a draw... but Bradley has selected the best team possible... and no DaMarcus! Finally!
Which two young pitchers should I take a shot on the rest of the way? Matusz, Norris, Holland, Hunter or Gio
I go Holland and Bud.
5 minute warning
Will Delgado and Wagner stay with the Mets?
For the rest of this year, yes. Always a chance at a deal, but Wagner should see action somewhere in September.
Carl Crawford a 1st round pick next year?
No Tulo talk yet after the cycle? Start him permanentally over Zobrist now at SS
Cycles are great, but it's still just a single 4-for-4. No need to go nuts over it. I do like Tulo over Zobrist right now, though.
Are you a believer in Gordon Beckham? Does the addition of Rios to the lineup move him from his current spot batting 2nd considering your earlier indication that he'll be replacing Pods? Or is trying to predict what Ozzie going to do a fruitless exercise?
I think you wrapped that Q up nicely. I've long since stopped predicting Ozzie's brain. I would like to see Rios up top... and leave the rest status quo, but what Guillen decides might only last one game and change tomorrow.
That's the buzzer, gang! Thanks as always for the Q's and we'll be back on Thursday morning for the next go-around... or you can find me on Twitter if you can't wait that long... until then, we'll see you the next time on Villa Alegre!
