Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Hello everyone. Too bad about Schumi. I was looking forward to seeing him back on the track. What's on your mind?

RAY GORDON REID ( EVANSTON ILLNOIS 60201)

QUESTION TO TERRY BLOUNT AT 2.15 PM HI TERRY READY HOPEFULY A NASCAR SUNDAY BROOKLYN 1A WHOS PICK FOR BROOKLYN

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

I'll go with JJ if they can keep enough gas in the car this time.

Spencer (Indy)

Terry, When is David Streme going to get kicked out of the 12 car? All he does is get in wrecks and tear up equipment. Time to give Justin Allgaier a shot.

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

I think Stremme needs to show some major improvement in the next few weeks to keep his seat. I know the Penske folks really want to give Allgaier one more season in NW. Don't forget about Keselowski.

Joe (Missoula, MT )

Terry, Can you give us your thoughts on positions 8-14, who's in who's out and what you thought of Kyles run at the Glen?

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

I wrote about that today. I think Busch will make it as along as he plays it smart as he did yesterday. Kenseth will have to make it on his points racing skills rather than car performance. And Martin still isn't in for sure. If he doesn't make it, fans will howl about changing the system.

kevin (new jersey)

Do you see Ryan Newman missing the chase like i do?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

He hasn't run well the last few weeks, but he's still 100 points inside the cutoff. He might have enough of a cushion to stay in the top 12 for four more weeks if he can post a decent finish or two.

Eddie (Miami)

If JR Motorsports needs a new driver next year, any chance that driver would be Jeffrey Earnhardt?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

I doubt it. Jeffrey is working with his dad, who still has ties to Teresa and EGR. Brad has a new deal ready to race the 88 in NW, but he'll have to nix it if he chooses a Cup ride that isn't a Chevy.

Matt (NY)

Prediction.... If Mark martin doesn't make the chase, prepare for a huge number of fans being turned-off to NASCAR for good. If Kyle Busch doesn't make it, prepare for a huge number of fans smiling!! Why do you think that is?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

Mark is one of the most popular drivers in NASCAR history and Kyle alienates people with his immaturity at times.

Hal (Santa Monica)

If it possible that Schumi realized he was gonna get his butt kicked and only used the neck as an excuse to get out?

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

It's possible. We probably will never know. But it could be his lap times were slow and they used it as an excuse.

Kevin (Philadelphia)

Terry, despite alll of Denny Hamlins mechanical problems the last two years he has still finished and placed among the elite. Yet he still flies under the radar for the most part. What do u think will cause his name to start getting mentioned more often with the top 5 drivers even though he's been there a lot the last few years.

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

If you win, you get attention. It's that simple. Denny got plenty of attention when he won at Pocono. He he wins more often, or wins the championship, he'll get his just due.

Mike (CT)

Do you think when Cousin Carl will make the Nascar HOF when he retires?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

I hate that nickname, but I think he has to do a lot more before even considering that question.

Demetric (Orlando)

Is it still possible for the Earnharts to make mends and rejoin once again....I'm sure thats what Sr would have wanted

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

No, not possible. Junior isn't going to race with Teresa.

Jason (TX)

Gordon and Stewart keep talking about being teammates and sharing information etc. Why doesn't Nascar just admit that Henrick has a 6 or 7 car team and let Roush, Penske, Gibbs do the same thing?

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

Roush is doing it with Yates. Childress is building engines with EGR. The whole 4-car limit thing hasn't worked because NASCAR allowed these alignments. But it's a blessing now because some of these teams wouldn't exist without partnerships.

stacy (georgetown )

what is up with jeff gordon? is he ok or not going to make the chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

He's going to make the Chase. But his back is a problem. Whether he can race at 100 percent effectiveness is up for debate.

Maria (Orlando)

With that shot Jeff took yesterday plus Vegas and Pocono a few years ago, isn't it time for Jeff to seriously consider retirement?

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

It's too early to say. He might be fine after resting in the off-season. But he won't race like this indefinitely.

David (Washington DC)

How about JPM's performance this year? I'm not sure he can win the chase going up against 7 Hendrick cars (what a load of crap that is) but I think he can at least make it interesting with his performances of late. Your thoughts?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

JPM is getting it done with a well-thought conservative strategy by crew chief Brian Pattie from Day 1 this season. The goal was to earn top 10s and not aggressive try to win. They just wanted to make the Chase. They are very close to accomplishing that goal.

Nelson (Columbus, Indiana)

We predict that Kyle and Vickers make the chase at the expense of Newman and Martin. Your thoughts?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

Vickers has raced well over the last month. But it won't be easy to get into the top 12. And he has Bowyer breathing down his neck now.

Dale (New York)

Hey Terry, any idea where Yates Racing stands for 2010? Are they gonna keep Menard, replace Labonte??

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

Menard is signed for next season. They don't have a sponsor for Labonte. That's still an unknown. And McMurray might fit in there somewhere if he doesn't go to EGR.

paul (nc)

i can't remember if it was you or another columnist who keeps saying that there should be a road course in the chase, but after the glen yesterday, i totally agree. do you think they would ever put a race at virginia international?

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

Don't know abou Virginia, but I would love to see a road course in the Chase. If you race road courses, one should be part of the Chase to crown the champ. I'd like to see Sonoma in the Chase.

marc t (burke, va)

i beleive it's time for a union in nascar...your thoughts...thanks for the great reporting!

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

This has been discussed from time to time, but it's a very difficult thing to do. I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Jeremy (Philadelphia)

If Labonte doesnt get resigned in the off-season, is there any idea of where he could go?

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

Home to the rocking chair maybe. I'm sure some team would pick him up to drive, thinking they might find another Mark Martin situation. But I don't see Bobby getting a top ride at this point.

Richard (Kokomo, Indiana)

Will Tony Stewart bring his regular-season dominance to the chance or will Johnson and Knaus go to superman-mode and run away with the title?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

I don't think JJ will run away with the title, but they always seem to pick it up with the playoff starts. My gut feeling is something will happen in the Chase (and someone) that will surprise us.

Pancho (New Mexico)

Do you agree with those who say that Johnson will never be one of the all time Nascar greats until he proves he can win on a road course?

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

No. If JJ wins a fourth consecutive Cup title this year, few people will care if he ever wins a road course race.

Marion (San Antonio)

If Kyle misses the chase do you expect him to go all out for wins and to try to help Denny and Kurt beat Stewart and Johnson?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

I expect him to go all out for wins, but it's tough to dot hat and also help other drivers. Regardless, I think he will make the Chase.

Andrew (Granada Hills)

Is Jeff Gordon getting too old for NASCAR?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

Are you kidding? The man is 12 years younger than Mark Martin. But Goron's back is older at this point. For the record, Martin had a bad back for years, but it's fine now.

Joseph (Ft. Worth)

With the exception of Stewart, Henrick had a terrible weekend at The Glen. What happened to the Henrick dominance?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

Let's hope other teams are catching up so we'll have more competition when the Chase starts. We've seen signs of that in recent weeks.

J.M. (Kansas)

Terry, if JJ wins his 4th in a row, is that good or bad for NASCAR??

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

Both. It's good for someone to make history because it garners a lot of media attention. But it's bad to have one guy dominate things and make it appear impossible for anyone else to beat him.

Bobby (Glenarm)

Ambros is a breath of fresh air in NASCAR. Your thoughts on the 47 making at bid at the chase next year.

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Marcos is the real deal and his team's alliance with MWR has helped him. If Marcos continues to show improvement on ovals he has a real shot at making the Chase next season. And it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

paul (nc)

has a non-american ever won a cup? do you think montoya or ambrose will ever win one?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

No, not yet. But yes, JPM could win a title in the future. Ambrose has a ways to go before I see him winning a title.

Scott (Indy)

So, who takes the F1 ride now that Schu isn't driving?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

Luca Bodoer, a veteran Italian driver.

Sean (Northfield)

I still am upset they let Toyota into American stock car racing. Is there any chance we might see them kick Toyota out at some point?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

No chance whatsoever. The more the merrier, and hopefully, we'll see other manufacturers come in at some point like Honda or Nissan or Hyundai.

Tommy (Miami)

If all the drivers were in equal cars, who do you think would win?

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

Good question. I's say Kyle is he could control his emotions. If not, I'd go with Stewart, followed closely by Johnson. Edwards and Kurt Busch are right up there, also.

Ryan (Cleveland)

Will Mark Martin ever win a race if so when

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

Apparently, you haven't been watching. He's won four times this year.

John S (Illinois)

Terry - a technical question... On a hot day and a long race, the drivers must drink a lot to stay hydrated in the cars. When do they pee? Do they hold it for the whole race?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

No. If you gotta go, you go.

Greg (Indiana)

Hey Terry, How much during the year do you get to see the other guys like Marty, David, and Ed, and talk racing?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

All the time. Marty is at most of the race I'm at. Ed, David and I all were at the Brickyard last month. But we talk on the phone all the time.

Donna (Ft. Meyers)

It looks Dale Jr is the odd man out at Henrick just like Casey Mears or Vickers or Kyle were. What is the next stop for Dale?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

Dale Jr. isn't going anywhere.

Junie (Michigan)

Is the reason Childress is tanking because GM cut the budget and is giving all the support to Henrick?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Absolutely not. RCR folks admit they got behind at the start of the year on the aero development of the COT. GM cut back on Hendrick as well, but Hendrick has more resources overall than an other team.

Tom (Boston)

Terry, that was the most polite answer to an otherwise moronic question. Don't hold back!!

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

You mean like this one? Just kidding. I try to answer any legitmate question I can.

Mike (Albany)

Hey Terry, honest ?: Where do you see NASCAR five years from now? Will the racing be better, will the venues be different, will we have more car manufactuers in the sport?

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

Kansas will have two races. Kentucky will have one. NASCAR hopes to have tracks in Seattle, Denver and NY. When the auto industry returns to normal, we may see a new manufacturer or two. But we also could see fewer events (36 is too many) and shorter races at some tracks.

Scott (Rougemont NC)

Racing in the rain ... good or bad? Safety ... Fans ... Good competition ... what about those?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

I'm all for racing in the rain on road courses. Goodyear has the tire to do it. Yes, it would cuase some problems for some guys, but the best drivers would adjust. But I don't know about trying it on high banks ovals. I've seen rain pour down the Dega banking like a waterfall.

Louis (Fredericton, NB)

Why is 36 events too many? I don't see a reason right now to cut back on the number of events, except to put more spotlight on the NW series with more weekend with sprint cup races

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

It's simple supply and demand. No other major series races anywhere close to that many events. Attendance is down, especially at some tracks that have two events. Fewer races would increase attendance and increase interest.

Christian (Ft Lauderdale)

Hasn't the Start and Park situation gotten old of hand with teams showing up without pit crews?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

Yes it has. The 43-car field is a illusion now. Cut back the field and use the purse money to pay more to the teams that are trying to compete.

Joe (Missoula, MT )

Speaking of the NW series why does Ford elect to put the Mustang in that series vs the cup series? That mock up picture looks better than the cup cars do..

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

The mock-up looks great. And I think Chevy is making a huge mistake by not running the Camaro in the series.

Greg (Indiana)

Do you think Michigan is going to loose a race?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

I think it's possible. It's tough tims in that state and one ISC track will have to give up a race to Kansas in 2011.

Dave (Medford,OR)

can we please drop the "shoot out style" from the restarts......it is getting very annoying!

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

I couldn't agree more.

Sarah (San Dimas)

Why do the old fans dislike Kyle, Scotty Speed, Joey, Denny and those guys?

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

In general old-school folks don't like some young guy who's a bit different. That's true across society. But I don't know anyone who doesn't like Joey.

Terry Blount
  (3:02 PM)

Gotta run folks. Great chat today. Hopefully they'll race on Sunday at Michigan and not Monday. Have a great week. Peace.
