Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks! I'm here with you from the Hartford airport hotel before heading over to Bristol to co-host tonight's Friday Night Fights. I hope you'll tune in. The new notebook is up and there is also a new blog today. And plenty of news this week and two PPVs this weekend with Jones-Lacy and Donaire-Concepcion. .So we have plety to discuss. Let's get to it.

Keith H (Seattle)

Good morning Dan, I'd like a WBC Diamond Belt and an order of home fries, please.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I'll see what I can do.

Todd (Dallas, Texas)

Dan,your thoughts on the new WBC "Diamond" Catch Weight Fight Belt? I thought it was impossible for the sanctioning bodies to get any worse and then they come up with this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Please read today's blog, where I go into detail on my feelings about this disgusting new belt.

phil (buffalo, ny)

dan, do you see any upsets on the top rank card this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

No. Donaire will win easily. Peterson will win easily. I like Luevano over Concepcion in a solid fight. Melligen I have never seen before but Zepeda is an old man.

Brian (scottsdale, az)

The Mayweather-Marquez undercard looks really good. Let's hope it hold up.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

John-Juarez 2 and Katsidis-Escobedo are signed. Judah-Diaz is just about done, Judah has signed. It looks like it will come off. If it does, it's a terrific undercard.

Alex (Louisville)

DTM, any plans for Korobov to fight somebody that will take him from prospect to contender?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

It's a bit soon for that. Give it time.

Dee (Arlington, TX.)

Hello Dan! Now that the Williams vs. Pavlik bout has been finalized, who are you picking to win, and why?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

When the fight first came up, I thought Williams would win. Now that I have been thinking more about it, I am not so sure. Paul is a better technician, faster and has crazy long arms, decent pop and I think an excellent chin. But Pavlik is a big puncher and has shown a pretty good chin as well. I just don't know.

Realm (hialeah,fl)

Dan anything with joel julio (lovechild)statu want to see him fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. At the moment, there's nothing in the works for him.

Mother Nature (Earth)

I'm glad the seasons are changing..Finally some good boxing!

Matt (CT )

Dan, if you had a choice, would you rather see B Hop vs. : The Johnson/ Dawson winner, or Adamek?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Definitely Adamek-Hopkins.

Jeff (Phoenix)

Your Blog today was the best you have ever done. Please don't stop exposing the cockroaches who damage the sport.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Thanks.

Brian (DC)

Pavlik-Williams.... 2 fighters in their 20s who stand flat-footed, let their hands go, and hit and get hit.... any chance this isn't a great fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I think it could wind up being the fight of the year.

Jose Perez (New York)

What's up Dan, I was wondering what's Celestino's deal talking so much crap about Lopez??

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

He wants the fight. He'd rather fight Lopez for a lot of money than go to Mexico to fight a stiff for a lesser payday. Pretty simple.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Will Shane fight again this year? Since the Berto fight won't happen this year, he might be stuck just waiting '09 out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Really not settled yet. I've heard that Mosley may be willing to fight Clottey if they can get a date for it. Just not settled yet.

enrique (carlsbad)

I dont see where your talking about the wbc's disgusting belt

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Today's blog.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

I'm going to order the Jones-Lacy card. Do you think Lacy has anything left and can make a fight of it? Jones does sit on the ropes more now and can be hit. I also think that the Kimbrough-Litzau fight could be good.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I don't think Lacy has a lot left, but neither does Roy, so it could be entertaining -- that happens a lot when two guys are shot.

sam (phili)

you say in your notebook Roy was knocked out twice by Antonio Tarver. Not the case; he lost their third encounter by Dec.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Editing error that has been corrected. Settle down.

C.M. (Canada)

Really bothers me how Jones is fighting all these notable names like Trinidad, Calzaghe, and Lacy AFTER his prime, and when the fights mean nothing!

Bert (Minneapolis)

D$- I love the idea of Alexander-Kahn. What are the chances that happens? I don't think Khan would take it, as Alexander's the kind of fast slick guy that could school him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Unlikely for the time being, but give it time. They're both only 22. Maybe down the road in a few fights.

Randy (Milwaukee)

Dan, you taking the over or under on this: The Klitschko - Arreola fight will go 5 rounds.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

That was about my number for over under. I'm thinking over, but not by much.

R! (California)

So no undercard fight on Williams-Pavlik?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Not on HBO. Don't get greedy.

Derek (Albany)

Dan, Mosley-Clottey? Why does Shane get stuck fighting the guys no one else wants to fight?? He is the true fight fans fighter of our generation

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Unfortunately, when the big names paired off he was left withouot a partner like in musical chairs when someone gets stuck without a seat.

Mike (Rochester, NY)

Will Donaire be more marketable in the U.S. than Pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

It's an interesting question. It depends on a few things but if things broke right, it's possible. First, he has a bigger personality than Manny and he also speaks perfect English. Donaire would have to keep winning and move up several weight classes before folks will look at him like Manny, if ever. At 115 or 118 or even 122 he has no chance in America to be that level of a star. He's also already 26. When Manny was 26, he was already featherweight.

Jason (Atlanta)

Do you really in your heart of hearts think that Ruiz is the 10th best heavyweight in the world, or do you feel some obligation to rank him since he is an undeserving mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

I could not care less if is mandatory. That absolutely not relevent. However, heavyweight pretty much sucks and he one of the top 10 guys at the moment. However, he's going on a year of inactivity and will soon be dropped if he doesn't fight.

Donny (NYC)

Did Arreola agree to the same re-match clauses as Haye??

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

I do know the exact particulars of the contract but you can take it to the bank that the Klitschko side has rematch and/or options language in the deal.

Alan Clarke (South Africa)

I agree with everything you said in your blog as regards the WBC and their moronic diamond belt. Your "translations" for them polluting the boxing world are spot on, the problem is that we are the stupid ones. We the freaks will watch! What's the solution?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Just say no.

Dee (Arlington, TX)

Dan, what is your opinion on women's boxing being added to London Olympics?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Don't care and not interested.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Great notebook Dan! Any more talk of Berto Aydin? Love that one although I would happily settle for Berto Hlatswayo.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

The reality is that Berto will likely fight Hlatshwayo and Collazo and Aydin will probably end up fighting for an interim title, sick as that is.

Bry (SF)

Who's next for Bradley, Peterson or Alexander?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Bradley has a due mandatory with Lamont Peterson, so that is probably next for them. Alexander is TBA.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I'm only suprised that the WBC went straight to the Diamond belt. I would have expected them to start at Bronze, then Silver, then Gold, then Platinum and then Diamond.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Bravo. Don't forget the Lead Emeritus.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

The next step: The WBC randomly picks two fighters in different weight classes and names them "Diamond Champions in Recess" in hopes to collect sanctioning fees from both....

David (Cape Canaveral)

Dan don't you think Haye had to sign rematch contract to face Valuev? Whats thr difference, except Valuev fight may be easier.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I know Haye gave Sauerland options.

David (Houston)

Williams didnt end up with a bigger share than Pavlik did he?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Of course not.

Chris (PA)

Dan, this diamond champion belt is such a joke - how do fighters defend the belt if it is a unique catch-weight fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Who knows? They make crap up as they go along.

Louis (Montreal)

Can't wait to see who will be next WBC interim super diamond belt champion in recess

Bing (Philly)

Dan, you need to lay of the sanctioning bodies. We know what they're about. start focusing on the fighters and promotors and networks that give them money. If those people stopped buying into it, the sanctioning bodies would stop.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

And I suppose the cops should lay off arresting rapists and murderers and bank robbers too so they'll just stop? What a ridiculous comment.

Ronak (Patel)

Scale of 1-10, how excited will you be for marquez vs mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

7.

Anthony (Cleveland)

I think Williams will be too busy and too awkward for the 1 dimensional Pavlik. Lost a lot of respect for Pavlik after B-Hop plus he let the Arthur Abraham fight slip through his fingers. P.Williams by U.D.!

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

Dude, your name is Bing, your opinion can't be taken seriously.

Ian (Toronto, ON)

Hi Raphinator, I am a huge Kelly Pavlik fan. I love the guy. I am absolutely terrified of Paul Williams. Should I be?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Yes. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

tony (torres)

why would miguel cotto want to risk his belt if he is not fighting at the optimum 147lbs.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

He doesn't have a choice. If he weighs between 140.1 and 147 he is a welterweight. The reason he is 145 is not relevent to whether the title is at stake. What is is that he is a welter and that is that. Period.

Joe (RI)

To Anthony in Cleveland. Why did you loss respect for Pavlik because he lost to B-Hop? Jumping two weight classes to fight a legend is not enough for you? And Abraham just defended his Euro belt against his undersized sparring partner. Its takes two to tango my friend.

Rick (NY)

I rewatched Jones-Tarver I on ESPN Classic this week, I thought the 2 judges who had it for Roy were right. How did you score it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I also had Jones close.

Bombardier Billy Wells (Lying On the Canvas)

Why would Floyd Mayweather or Juan Manuel Marquez want anything to do with this joke Diamond belt, will any top class fighter take it seriously??

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Fighters like belts. Mayweather has always been with the WBC. Marquez, as a Mexican, is tight with the WBC. So it's possible the stink bomb belt will be at stake. But if they or the promoters waste one cent on it they're stupid plain and simple.

naslund (new york)

what are the chances pac-cotto (gate) outsells marquez-mayweather on day 1? there are STILL $300 tix available for marquez-mayweather...

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Very good.

TL (Hopedale, MA)

Danny Boy - Is there any chance any welterweight fighter would mess with Paul Williams at 147 any more?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Williams will never fight at welter again.

Bubba (ottawa,il)

Gotta give golden boy and money may some big time props for puting together a very solid undercard for the sept.19th card. You agree dan? Also thanks for another great notebook king freak.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Yes, it's an excellent undercard if it comes off as planned.

Marc (Malden, MA)

ESPN Classic also showed the Jones/Kelly fight. That is still the greatest KO I have ever seen.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

It was my KO of the year in 2002 when I worked at USA TODAY and the fight is this week's DVD pick of the week in my blog today,

Chris (PA)

Any word on tickets for Pavlik - Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

A lot of you have asked this question. Tickets go on sale on Saturday. The prices are $500, $300, $200, $100, $75, $50, $25 and 70% of the tickets are priced $100 or less.

Jim (CA)

Better at Light Heavyweight Micheal Moorer or Roy Jones

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Roy a better fighter overall and way more accomplished. Moorer a better puncher.

Louis (SC)

Hey Dan, any news on Hopkins/Adamek? I really want to see that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

The sides are talking. HBO is interested. Hopefully, it will work out.

Reid (Michigan)

Dan, if Kevin Johnson ko's Solis will he make your top ten hw? What r your thoughts on him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

It's possible he could slip in at the bottom of the top 10 with a win like that. Johnson has a lot of talent and a great jab. When he fights aggressively, he is much more pleasing like he was when he knocked out Devin Vargas a few months ago. I think Johnson has a good chance to win a title.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Isn't Arreola American? What's w/ his quote saying he's Mexican?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

He is Mexican-American and takes great pride in is Mexican heritage.

Michael (Hollywood, CA)

As a fight fan, I am thrilled the Pavlik/Williams fight was made. But I was a little surprised HBO stood behind it so much due to both fighters not exactly being household names. Were you surprised at all?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Not at all. HBO says it wants the biggest, most significant fights for live HBO that it can get. This falls into the category -- the best fight that can be made at the weight, two top nootch fighters, both American, with styles that blen well.

Eric (Allentown)

Dan, I haven't been a live fight since Gatti's final bout. Think I may have to get down to AC for Pavlik-PW. He's the new king of AC

Mark (Philly)

It appears that Pacman has signed the contract to fight Cotto. Are you aware if Cotto has also signed the contract?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Whether either of them have signed or not, it doesn't matter. They will and the fight is on.

Paul B (NY, NY)

A follow-up on the potential Aydin Collazo you mentioned: How do you think Aydin would hold up against a seasoned top tier fighter like Collazo? I have not seen much of him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Excellent fight. Aydin is tough and aggressive. Collazo a better boxer, but good match.

Matt (Lincoln, NE)

Dan, when has Roy been known as "Captin Hook"?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Since he got desperate to promote this fight with Lacy and he or his staff came up with it. Pretty lame if you ask me.

Kent (St. Catharines)

Wow!!!! I am concerned about Marc in Philly. That is two consecutive questions he has asked that have had nothing to do with Steve Cunningham. The summer heat must be wearing him down.

Rudy (Chicago)

Hey Dan, tell HBO to make Vazquez-Marquez 4!

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Why? They don't want Showtime's sloppy seconds, especially at a premium price for a fight that can't possibly live up to the first three fights.

Mark (NYC)

My apologies if I'm being dense, but the Ticketmaster website says that tickets for Pavlik-Williams go on sale on Tuesday. Is there another way to get them on Saturday?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Don't know what to tell you. Arreola promoter Dan Goossen told me Saturday.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Is it just me or is a Balszay-Bika undercard coupled with Bute-Andrade a stellar card? Great scoop on that one, DTM! I may have to hop a flight to Canada. Alos do you know whether in will be in Montreal or Quebec City?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

That would be a great card. Still not sure though if the card will be in Montreal or QC.

Joe (PA)

Do you see Roy Jones Jr ever going back to HBO for commentating?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Yes, some day.

mike (ohio)

is the zab judah-antonio diaz fight a 140 pound fight or a catch weight, and do you think he can win a title back at that weight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

It's supposed to be at 144 max.

David (Old Bridge, NJ)

How do you feel about Oscar's upcoming fight with Shaq ? Do you give Shaq a chance ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

I'm not sure who will win but since it's at a catch weight I am sure hoping the winner gets a WBC Diamond Belt piece of crap.

Riad (London)

Why Judah vs Hatton has been called off?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Yes, that is why Judah is fighting Antonio Diaz.

Dave (Philadelphia)

Dan, Thanks for the info on the Pavlik-Williams tix, but Ticketmaster says they go on sale on Tuesday!

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

So there ya go.

George (Mississippi)

Dan, I saw Wladimir may fight Chambers next. Isn't the mandatory with Povetkin way overdue?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

They are both mandatory. Wlad plans to fight Chambers first and the sides are working on the deal.

ish (nyc)

is there any chance there's been a copy-edit mistake and diamond was wrongly substituted for diarrhea?

David (New York, NY)

What's for dinner tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Probably grilled chicken at the ESPN cafeteria with my man Brian Kenny.

Colin (College Park, MD)

Has Floyd Sr. officially taken over Floyd Jr.'s camp since Roger has to battle his legal issues?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

As far as I was told just the other day by someone in the Mayweather camp, Roger is still in the gym every day and it's business as usual. Floyd Sr. is also there. If Roger winds up in jail I would imagine Daddy would take over.

Ali (Scotland)

Is Roy trying to audition for Pirates Of The Caribbean ?

carlos ((houson, tx))

DTM, will you be here in houston next week for the diaz's fight? I saw diaz this morning in public work out and looks in great shape. Your thoughts on this fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

I will not be in Houston. Decent fight. Must win for both Diaz and Paulie. If Paulie is going to win, he has to box a perfect fight. Diaz can afford to make more mistakes than Paulie.

bruce t (torrance,ca)

who is your pick for jones/lacy?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Jones.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Be sure to tell BK- the Freaks love him for asking Floyd the real questions the Freaks wanted to know.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

In the immortal words of our broadcast hero: Definitely.

Terry (Tampa, FL)

please tell BK he is too soft on Floyd.....lol

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Do you drive to CT or do you fly...I know you hate to fly?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Fly. At least it's an easy flight -- 52 minutes from wheels up to wheels down from DC to Hartford and I had the upgrade (as well as one tomorrow morning).

Handy (Calgary, AB)

Can you see Perro v. Vanes Marytosian in early 2010 headlining a BAD?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Yes I can. Good fight down the road.

tonytorres (zapata tx)

should i buy jones/lacy or donaire/conc. ppv

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

I really don't care.

Matt (Lincoln, NE)

Dan the man of the fan, what happened with Danny Garcia? Thought he was going to be on FNF tonight

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

He was. Golden Boy didn't not give an opponent who was acceptable to ESPN.

Duff (Abington, MA)

Shumenov-Campillo, who do you got?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Shumenov with ease.

richard (oxford, united kingdom)

do you think ring announcers like buffer and lennon jr. have to hold back the vomit in their mouths when they introduce fighters as interim champions or champion emeritus?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Probably.

Duff (Abington, MA)

Hypothetical question for you Dan. Who do you think wins a 15 rounder between Lennox Lewis and George Foreman, both in their prime?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Big George would have knocked Lennox out.

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

You have to think that Pavlik-Wlliams is easily the biggest fight in their careers. Each guy's stock can skyrocket with a memorable min

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

It is for Williams. But for Pavlik it is not bigger than when he knocked out Taylor to win the title or even beat him in the rematch.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

LOL!

steve (reno)

On a year that was overall very positive for ESPN2 FNF (Peter v Chambers, Bailey KO, Angulos impressive show, the season finale doubleheader), isnt it fair to say the FNF-Golden Boy pairings were very disappointing? Way too many mismatches and showcases for raw fighters not ready for TV (Broner and Jordan come to mind). I know Teddy and the crew have to expect more next year from that promoter, right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I agree. The GB cards have lacked most of the time. Not all of them. Escalante-Lock, for example, was a good show. But they've been a disappointment.

Paul B (NY, NY)

DTM- How do you prepare for hosting FNF? Do you and BK go over the content and flow or more fly by the seat? Also good luck tonight- you seem at ease in front of the camera. Love that freak shout-out BK tees up.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

We get "the rundown" from the producer. We'll look it over at dinner and go over it. I'll read though the production packet of info on our fights and other clips and notes (including my own notebook). If we have video packages or clips, I watch them so I know what I will be seeing on the set. BK is so experienced and I know the material so well that I will be talking about it runs very smoothly and is a lot of fun.

Dave (PA)

can you blast the WBC and WBA on TV please?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

If it comes up, you know it.

Christopher (Linz, Austria)

When does the next season of FNF start?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

January.

Roscoe (Miami)

Is Tarver a HOFmer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

No chance.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

I believe it would be ruled a technical draw.

Scott (Austin TX)

James Kirkland? Any new info?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Still cooling his heals in jail. He'll be sentenced next month.

Berndawg (chi)

OPEN HAIRCUT--Great call on the Countdown show, especially for the Pavlik/Williams fight.

Chris (Nashville)

Mason "The Line" Dixon has a better chance at the HoF than Tarver does.

Scott (Lansing, MI)

Which bouts are scheduled to be televised on FNF tonight? Even though there's about a .1% chance of it happening since he's not really on the radar, I was hoping to be able to see Mitchell (used to play LB for MSU).

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Harris-Bolanos is the main event. Deontay Wilder and Keither Thurman's bouts will also be on. I believe Seth's fight is one of the TV swing fights, so if we get some early knockotus -- which I all but guarantee -- he has a chance to make TV.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Funeka- Guzman. How close is that to happening and who you got?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

It should happen as it's for a vacant title.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Ivan Calvaron vs. Roman Gonzolez as a BAD undercard? Realistic possibility?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

You're dreaming.

Cesar (chicago)

I want to get tickets for the fight on November 14th and I read your blog the other day and actually signed up to Top Rank but I have not gotten the email with the link so I can purchase tickets starting on Saturday. Do you think the tickets will sell out on Monday when they go on sale for everyone? I want to know in case I cant get any on Saturday. Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

I really don't know but I wish you good luck.

Antonio Garcia (Anaheim, California)

Do you know when Cristian Mijares is going to fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

He has a rematch with Cermeno. Check the sked because I do not recall the exact date.

tauseef (blackburn)

Will cotto's belt be on when he takes on Pacquiao

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Yes.

pats (hermosillo, mexico)

Dano a Mano! Saul Alvarez says he wants Chavez Jr. i don't think that will happen.. at least not right now, but who do u take if they were fighting tomorrow?? and whats the ceiling for both of them??

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Alvarez would stiffen Chavez.

Miguel (Ashburn, VA)

how many times do you have to answer if cotto's belt will be on the line... how many times!!!! YES people YES!!! Cotto's belt will be in the line.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Just in case anyone missed my answer.

Brian (Philly)

Dan - I just watched the HBO doc, and can't believe some fighters still work with Panama Lewis

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

I know. Pathetic.

tonytorres (zapata tx)

will cottos belt be on the line lololololol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan-O, thanks for the blogs! Your thoughts on Money May hosting RAW a few weeks before his big fight. Any fear of him getting hurt? I remember he got a concussion when Big Show through him and he landed wrong.

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Good for promoting the card. I think it's fine. I wouldn't expect Floyd to become involved in anything physical though that close to the fight.

Ron (Arlington VA)

Is Pacman taking too much risk by moving up another weight division and chalenging Cotto? If he wins, do you consider him one of the all time great?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

I already consider him an all-time great.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

I loved when Shaq did it. I actually attened that show in DC and it was a lot of fun.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Yeah, our finale is outstanding and that main event should be a very good fight.

Scott (Austin,TX)

BTW, Dan, he's probably not cooling his heels. Austin has had 51 STRAIGHT days of 100 degree weather!

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Good point.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, if you had to (heaven forbid) cover a different sport other than boxing, what would it be?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Baseball. I covered a lot of it before I covered boxing. Also basketball, which I also covered a lot of. Anything but auto racing again!

tonytorres (zapata tx)

when will floyd host raw?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Two things: Aug. 24 and read the weekly notebook or I will have to ban you.

Eddie B (Arizona)

What was your favorite Julio Cesar Chavez fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Meldrick 1.

Sean (Fort Lauderdale)

Tell Cesar from Chicago to call top rank (the number is on their website) and they will send him the presale code.

Justin (Long Island)

After watching "Assault in the Ring" I am now 99.9% sure MargaCHEATO had plastered gloves against Cotto. He and his trainer should be banned from boxing for good.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

If we can have Latin Fury and Pinoy Power, when are we going to get Caucasian Combat?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Don't give Arum any ideas.

Joe Petka (Philly)

Putting a side the bad ratings and unworthy mandatorys, doesn't the IBF get some credit for only having one champion per division.

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

That's like somebody getting credit because they're not in prison and they don't beat their wife.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

Dan as much as I'd love Hasegawa vs Agabeko, that fight has no chance of happening. Japanese fighters don't recognize the IBF or the WBO as belts and won't unify with them.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Doesn't mean I can't wish for it in my blog does it?

Butch (Pittsburgh PA)

DTM, what percent would you say Roy Jones Jr. is right now compared to Roy back in his prime at Light Heavy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

50 percent.

WBA (eighth circle of hell)

Damn. Why didn't we think of the"diamond belt"

Panama Lewis (Tampa)

Hey Man! I knows nothin' about nothin' about with no gloves or loaded water! U Understand?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

One love.

Necessary Evil (Judgement Bar)

Dan, I know this is not how we should normally handle things, but I printed up a picture of a WBC belt and I just took a crap on it. Sorry, I thought it was deserved.

Gael G (Sonora)

What is your opinion of Edgar Sosa?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

He's been on a great run and very, very busy, although he has not fought too many strong opponents. But he's staying active, packing in his fans and winning. He was a bit of a late bloomer.

Rob C (Philly)

is mosley berto definitely off?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

It was never on.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (Iran)

Your comment comparing our electoral process to the WBC is a national outrage!

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Sorry, bro.

enrique (carlsbad, ca)

Dan .. have you heard anything about a 24/7 for Pac vs Cotto. Seems like a no brainer.. tons of drama, from Cottos beef with his uncle and the questinable defeat at the hands of margarito, to Pacs training camp location. I think it has the possability of being the best 24/7 yet

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

There will be a 24/7 for this fight.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, I am so excited about the fights this fall. Unbelievable schedule! Aside from the Pac-Cotto fight, which is the fight you are most looking forward to?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Pavlik-Williams.

Antonio Margarito (Mexican American Border)

I really don't see what the big deal is about Panama Lewis.

Smitty (Richmond)

Dan, after reading the blog I am ready to reveal that my Dad won a PLATINUM belt Thursday night!

Jess (Miami)

Dan, which of the new Cuban prospects do you think has the most potential for a promising future?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Rigondeaux and Lara.

Brian (DC)

How long until we see an Interim Diamond Champ or a Diamond Champ Emeritus? I say 6 months.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Why so long?

Damjan (Charlotte, NC)

dan, we had the bobfather in the chat a few weeks ago, who's the next celebrity guest?

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

Depends who is around when I am at my next fight next month. Maybe there will be a special guest the day before Mayweather-JMM.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

You aren't wearing a pirate outfit during this chat, are you?

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

No, because in the immortal words of Jerry Seinfeld, I don't wanna be a pirate!

Michael C. (Ireland)

Dan, What do you think the chances are of Valero getting the sanctioned outside of Texas?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Very good. I believe he will be licensed in Nevada before the end of the year.

Matt (CT )

Just finished reading "The Last Great Fight" by Joe Layden...excellent book...at the time of Tyson vs. Douglas, where were you career wise, and where were you during the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

I was a sophomore in college and did not see the fight live as I was very ill and asleep in my dorm room. The next day when I woke up, my roommate told me Tyson got knocked out. I didn't believe him. I was sick as a dog. There was no cable in the dorm rooms at that time and there was no such thing as the Internet to check. I made him go out and get a newspaper to prove it to me. He came back with a newspaper and it was true. I was shocked. I made a special trip home the following weekend to watch a replay on HBO at my mom's house.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Did you like the movie "Tyson"?

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Yes, and if you are a Tyson fan or have even remote interest in him you should check it out. The good news is that if you missed it, it comes out on DVD this month. It's definitely worth watching.

Dave (NYC)

Dan, are you wearing pants during this chat?

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Yes, I assure you.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Did you see that Dan? All 3 of the guys that jacked Vernon were ALREADY convicted felons on parole! All 3 career criminals. Here in CA they want to free most of them too. No dinero to hold them.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

A sad state of affairs. They should ship them all out to the WBC and WBA offices.

Batman (Batcave)

Holy long chat!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

What the hell else do I have to do in the airport hotel when I don't need to be on the ESPN campus until this evening?

George (Mississippi)

Dan, it was reported in the Biloxi paper that only 3,000 tickets have been sold for Jones-Lacy. Does this have the makings of being a financial disaster for Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Yup.

Steve (Sac, Ca)

Dano, to all freaks, the Tyson DVD comes out this Tuesday

Chris (TN)

I wish you'd included a photo of the diamond belt with your blog, it's more gaudy than the WWE Divas belt.

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

There is a photo on the front boxing page in the carousel of stories. Click on it.

Alan Clarke (South africa )

You were ill during Gatti-Ward1 and Tyson- Douglas. You pick your times!

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

I was sick for one other fight as well -- Morales-Pacquiao 1, which was supposed to be my first live fight for ESPN after I left USA TODAY.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Hey Dan. Got out of work a little early today and glad to see the chats still going. Great story about where you were during Tyson/Douglas! I can say that it was THE fight that made me a boxing fan. It's most likely also the reason why I have a soft spot for underdogs... I love an upset! And that was the Ultimate upset!

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Whenever the Freaks ask me if so and so can win this fight or that fight, I think it's the dumbest question ever. The reason: Anything can happen. I always say or think to myself: I saw Tyson get knocked out by Douglas. ANYTHING (ANYTHING!) can happen when the bell rings.

WBC (Laughing at the Bank)

We've just awarded the Diamond belt to the shower door for the KO of Judah!

Alec (Nashville)

Any word on the possibility of Nate Campbell/Tim Bradley decision being overturned?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

There is a hearing later this month, I believe Aug. 24.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Dan, not Anything can happen. The WBC can't get any worse. Can it? Can it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

ANYTHING can happen. The WBC getting worse wouldn't even be a surprise.

Scott (Austin,TX)

Dave, whether Dan wears pants for the chat matters little. The question is, does he wear a diamond belt?

Brian (Orlando)

Dan, any world on when and where we might see Matt Korobov again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Not sure exactrly but count on seeing him one of Top Rank's October shows, either Oct. 3 under Pavlik-Williams or Oct. 10 in NY under the Lopez/Gamboa fights.

Rob C (Philly)

How do you see pac-cotto ending?

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

With Buffer announcing the official particulars.

Alec (Nashville)

Great news about the Mayweather/Marquez undercard! Do you think Arum can match it with Pac/Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Arum swears it will be a strong undercard. Could have Soto in a lightweight bout. Maybe Valero. I am going to hold him to it.

Ronak (Patel)

If Chris arreola, David Haye, and Eddie Chambers all win their fights (BIG IF), how interesting would do you think the heavyweight division will be?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

That would certainly create some interest.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, From what you've heard what % do yoiu give the Kessler Ward fight to be in Oakland?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

That's where it's supposed to be. I think it probably will be there.

Brian (DC)

If there are ever Floyd-Pac negotiations, would Arum ever let DuBoef speak for TR like he did for Pavlik-Williams? I can't see Bob ever being hands-off on such a high-profile fight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

I could see it. Todd duBoef is president of the company and runs a lot of the day-to-day business and is perfectly capable of doing the biggest deals. It's not like he doesn't consult with Arum or go over things with him. He just deals with the other side better sometimes that Arum does. He has kmore patience.

George (Fontana, CA )

I think the Judah v. Antonio Diaz fight ends up being a great fight, So long as Diaz signs. Whats your opinion on this fight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

A matchup that should produce action. Great way to kick off an excellent card.

Jon (SF)

Dan, I read that Williams might actually have a slightly bigger piece of the HBO money, but that Pavlik has all the gate. Is this true?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

It doesn't make a difference because it's all one pot and the Top Rank side has a lot more than the Williams side, as it should be. The Williams side was bought out for just under $2 million. Every other dollar goes to the TR side.

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

DTM, any possibility of Bradley/Peterson taking place in DC? It would be nice to see the fight in the Armory.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

You never know. I have mentioned to Top Rank a few times that they need to get off their butts and promote the brothers in DC. When they fought there last time on ESPN2 against shmears, they drew a nice crowd. If there was a bigger fight or a title bout, I am sure they would draw.

Ross (Grimsby, UK)

Dan-o-mite, There's a big movement in the UK to try and get Steve Bunce back on to UK TV. A lot of UK freaks were at a roadshow that hes doing at the moment and he gave a big shout to the King Freak, and I quote 'All UK fans who are boxing freaks, check Dan Rafael at ESPN, one of the best boxing reporters out there'

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

Bunce is my man. I hope he gets back on the air in the UK now that Setanta is dead. He's a cool cat.

Mike (NJ)

Am I on drugs or can you possibly see this scenario happening...Cotto beats Pacman, Floyd doesn't want a piece of Cotto so we see Cotto vs a comebacking and Oscar May 1st, 2010?

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

I actually could see that as a possibility. Crazier things have happened.

Jorge (East Los Angeles)

Dan, Any idea on who else will be on the card with Arreola\Klitschko? Please tell me they put on at least a few decent fights at Staples for the fans.

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

Goossen will put on some of his young guys like Shawn Estrada and John Molina. Not sure about the rest of just the show just yet.

Brian (DC)

What's your favorite Morales fight outside of the 2 trilogies?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

Either Zaragoza or Injin Chi. I think the Chi fight, which I was at, is very underrated.

Brent (Cleveland)

Ray Austin ranked #2, I almost cried when I read that.

Pancho (Los Mochis)

Any word on whether the Kessler situation witn Palle can get him kicked out of the tournament?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

It won't get him "kicked out." Kessler will be fine and will fight. Palle will cause problems if he can but it is unlikely to force him out of the tourney. At worst, I think the best Palle can do it maybe get some financial considerations. No judge is going to enjoin Kessler from fighting.

Matt (CT )

Dan, I just read the blog...DAWSON at the XL CENTER!!!! That, as a boxing fan living in Connecticut (a state with no pro team) is GREAT news...I had people over for the Dawson/Tarver fight and my casual fan friends were like "chad who?" ....hopefully he can build a brand in a post-Whalers state...

Matt (portland, OR)

Dan have you ever met a member of an alphabet belt? And did they have any idea how much contempt you had for them?

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

I've met them all. Let's just say we've had some interesting discussions.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Austin Being #2 is a joke. Is Henry Akinwande 3? Do they just pick these names out of a hat? It's vomitous...

Christopher (Staten Island)

Do you think Arreola even has a puncher's chance against Klitschko? I would love to see a competitive big time heavyweight fight, especially after you reminded me of Brewster/Liakhovich last week.

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

The main thing Arreola has going for him is his power. He's not more athletic than Vitali, he's not much faster if at all. He's smaller. But he can bang and he'll be in there swinging.

Steve (Hartford)

I second the thought of a countdown to Pavlik/Hopkins show, Take note HBO!!!

Christopher (Linz, Austria)

I took a nap and had a nightmare, it was a Maskaev-Austin final eliminator.

Chris (Boston)

Dan, I know Collazo was being ridiculous regarding money, but why wouldn't HBO insist on Berto-Collazo II to give Berto the date? It's a fight a lot of people want to see.

Dan Rafael
  (3:18 PM)

Not if it can't be made for the money on the table. Berto-Hlatshwayo is equally as legit as a rematch. I'm cool with either one or with Berto-Aydin.

Jeff (Phoenix)

Dan,Buy or sell....If Vassily Jirov gets back to top form he can unify the crusier division?BTW....best body puncher I ever saw and in the best fight I ever saw (Toney)

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

Sell. 35-year-olds coming off long layoffs and dopping down in weight usually don't end up dominating a division, especially one with some talent, which the cruisers have.

Brian (scottsdale, az)

Is Keith Thurman that is fighting tonight the up-and-coming propect that I have seen on some list?

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

I assume so since he's undefeated and won all his bouts by knockout, had a good amateur career, is signed with Golden Boy and manager Shelly Finkel.

Angel (Carson City)

Have you seen any footage of Tyson Fury? What do you make of him as a prospect? Legit or pretender?

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

I have DVDs of several of his fights. Huge dude, a prospect, lots of hype right now in the UK. Jury is out. Let's see what happens when he fights somebody who fights back. But if he proves he can take a shot, he could be a guy to seriously watch.

Johnny (Brixton, UK)

If you were physically FORCED to watch Yuri Foreman against either Cory Spinks or Daniel Santos, who would you choose?

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

I would fight against being forced until my dying breath.

jamesa (ottawa)

Dan, favourite type of beer?

Dan Rafael
  (3:24 PM)

Root.

Matt (CT)

Do you think Winky Wright vs. Strum gets done? I wouldn't mind seeing Wright vs. Roy Jones Jr....in Florida...at a catchweight...say, 168...Pensacola vs. St. Pete...thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

I dont think you'll see either fight. Winky-Roy is never going to happen, ever. Stupid fight, nobody would care and they are good buddies.

Brandon (San Diego)

Best fighter you have ever seen in person?

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

Probably prime Roy Jones circa 2000-2003.

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

I would also put in there the prime Mayweather at 130, prime Mosley, BHop and Pacquiao.

Bing (Philly)

Steel yourself for ensuing battle over whether the WBO welterweight strap should be up or not. Lot of venom spewing on the boards this week

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

It doesn't matter. The belt will be up. Period.

Super Freak (Freakdom)

Do I offically qualify for freak status b/c I made my wife to be change our wedding date so that we could go to Pavlik v. Williams? But that is just how excited I am about this fight. Of course, I am one of the lucky ones, the lady loves the fights.

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 PM)

Impressive.

Steve (NJ)

Did you like when Riddick Bowe threw the WBC belt in the trash.

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

Yes. It aroused me.

Matt (Minneapolis)

Great to hear Linares is ready to be an active fighter again. Any idea when they plan to get him on tv in the States again?

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

I wish there was a plan. He's too good, too exciting and too charismatic to never fight on US TV.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Man this upcoming fall looks amazing. Esp since the fights that we actually have to pay for are looking at having good undercards. This is like 3 straight falls of great boxing matchups. Boxing is here to stay.

tony (zapata)

when is j.c chavez fighting somone legit

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

Never.

John (San Fran)

Dan a little to personal on the reaction to Riddick Bowe throwing out the belt

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

Sorry.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Joe and Teddy do an awesome job on the new Fight Night game. EA needs to get you invlolved w/ some rankings, commentary, etc.

Dan Rafael
  (3:36 PM)

That would be cool.

John (new york)

Do you think Ricky Hatton will fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (3:36 PM)

Yes.

Dave (Philadelphia)

Dan, Now that the Williams-Pavlik fight is signed, as someone who will likely be making the trip to AC for the fight (and has not yet reached freak-status so my knowledge is not nearly as thorough), I was wondering if you (or any of the freaks out there) could suggest a Pavlik fight and a Williams fight to show to friends as a way of convincing them to make the trip. Thanks in advance!

Dan Rafael
  (3:38 PM)

Easy. Show them either Pavlik-Miranda or Pavlik-Taylor 1 and show them Williams-Margarito. Theyll be begging to join you on the trip.

Larry (Miami)

Do you forsee Chris John becoming a big star in the US?

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

LOL. No. A good fighter in some good fights? Sure. A star? No way.

Benvenuto (Miami)

DTM....I just got on a computer, at physical therapy, working on post op knee surgery........simply so I wouldn't miss a chat. No, the physical therapist has no idea..........here he comes....I gotta go...FREAKS UNITE.

Mike (Dublin)

Do you want to see Hatton fight again though?

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

Not particularly. But if Ricky fights again, I wish him well. He was always a class act as far I am concerned. Great with the fans, great with the media and just an overall cool guy.

Max (NY)

Why do the FNF's always seem to run over time. I've missed the endings on about half the fights and am forced to find out the ending on the internet. Any way you can talk to the higher ups to fix the timing issue?

Dan Rafael
  (3:43 PM)

Are you serious? It's a live freakin' sporting event. Baseball games are slotted in three-hour windows and always run longer. You can't time it exactly when you are dealing with ring walks and announcements and maybe a five-minute delay in the event of a foul, etc... You are insane. Set your recorder longer. When I record live boxing I always set it at least a half hour extra.

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

I'm still numb from the last question, among the dumbest I have ever seen in about 10 years of chats, including when I used to chat at USA TODAY.

Gerry (Maine)

Max is now eligible for a diamond belt!

Banishment (Land of the Dead)

Finallllllyyy!!!!!!! I was starving!!!!!! Welcome Max!!

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

Max, there's a DVR For Beginners chat immediately following Dan.

Gerry (Maine)

Good Lord, how do you make a fight run on time? OK, guys we're backed up because the last 2 fights went the distance. So the main event will be 2.5 rounds so Max can see it.

John (Ogden, Utah)

I'm fine with the welterweight belt being on the line, but it's still a "tainted" 7th division title for Pac if he wins. If you have to contractually hamstring your opponent by forcing him down 2 poinds it's not a true ww title. Sorry just my opinion.

Dan Rafael
  (3:46 PM)

It's ok to be wrong like you are.

Chris (Nashville)

Max should just watch Pac. v Hatton over and over again. It didn't run over.

Max's Mother (NY)

I'm sorry everyone.....I raised my son better than that

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Then Cotto shouldn't have agreed to the fight if he didn't want it at 145

Dave (NJ)

Do you think Cotto will have any beef that he is the "champion" yet the posters and promos have it as "Pacquiao vs. Cotto"?

Dan Rafael
  (3:50 PM)

That's the cost of doing business. I don't like that aspect either. I believe in the tradition of the titleholder first. But Manny is the bigger star. It happens. There are plenty of examples. Editorally, to me, it is Cotto-Pacquiao.

Craig (UK)

Dan, surely Max's question cannot top the Q from a few months back about whether it hurts if you have pimples and get punched by it. That really was an all-time classic

Dan Rafael
  (3:51 PM)

That was just silly. This was genuine idiocy.

Jon (DC)

Your stance on calling it Cotto-Pacquiao gives credibility to sanctioning bodies. Cotto isn't the linear champ and is a trinket holder, albeit one who beat Mosley.

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 PM)

But it is Manny coming up to challenge him, that's all.

Dave (NJ)

Any word on the announce crew for tomorrow's ppv's?

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 PM)

Not sure on Jones-Lacy but Donaire-Concepcion will be Al Bernstein, Mario Lopez and Brian Viloria.

Paul B (NY, NY)

"Genuine idiocy"...if we didn't have it, banishment would die of starvation.

Jose Suliman (WBC)

Max, congrats on submitting one of dumbest questions in 10 years.

ESPN NEWSROOM (CT)

BREAKING NEWS: Max from NY has accepted a position on the board at the WBC. Jose Suliman has stated "Max deserves this. He will be one of the most competent members of our organization".Stay tuned for more news to make you vomit uncontrollabley.

Mark (Brooksville, Fl.)

Hey Dan,Is RJJ basically now just fighting for the $$$? Has he "shared" any goals he has left or even mentioned retirement?

Dan Rafael
  (3:56 PM)

The funny thing is Roy doesn't make a lot on these fights because he is the promoter. He has to pay all the expenses and then reaps only if the event makes money, which I have a hard time seeing.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Hey Max, you want something to end up at exactly the right time, what an episode of WWE Raw. Amazing how that always ends at the right time.

Dan Rafael
  (3:57 PM)

Dude, even RAW runs over almost every week by 10 minutes! I always set the DVR until at least 11:20.

Jon (DC)

I think Barry Tompkins is calling the Roy fight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:58 PM)

Yes, you are right. I had forgotten that.

Peter (Dallas)

Dan, if you could pair prime Roy Jones with anyone from history, who would you like to see him fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:59 PM)

The middleweight Roy fight Ray Robinson.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Will BJ Flores ever fight someone with a pulse? Do you think he has real plans to make a title run? His undefeated record is suspect at best.

Dan Rafael
  (4:01 PM)

I have no idea. His opponents have been a huge disappointment. They can make all the excuses they want about this guy turned it down, that guy turned it down, whatever. His ledger is what it is and it's a big disappointment. This fight he is fighting a shot super middleweight in Mendoza, not even an actual cruiserweight.

manny (jersey)

how about lhw jones vs archie moore?

Dan Rafael
  (4:01 PM)

Also a great one.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, i know this comes up every week and there is historical precedent. but i respectfully disagree about whether cotto/pacquiao should be for the title. it seems like if you are challenging for a title the weight limit should based on the division limit.

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 PM)

We've been over this. I actually agree with you BUT it does not change the fact that a guy who weighs 145 and has a title is obligated to defend or be stripped or vacate because he is indeed still a welter. You folks are mixing up facts and opinions. It's fine to believe Cotto is being hosed by having to go to 145. But the fact is that at 145 he is a welterweight, therefore the title is up. You can't have a title, be in the weight category and keep your belt if you lose.

Kyle (Cleveland)

Hey Max, hope you didnt set your DVR to this chat! It's running into overtime!! Great job as always DTM!!

Dan Rafael
  (4:05 PM)

Hilarious.

JQ (NM)

Dan are you kidding me! I had lunch, played a ton of basketball, showered, did a little work and you're still here! You are the Super/Diamond/Regular/Interim/Ambassador of good will Unified Heavyweight champion of Freaks!!

Dan Rafael
  (4:06 PM)

Just don't give me a Diamond Belt!

JR (Indiana)

I didn't know Pavlik camp was looking at Manfredo and Wright as a backup, and since it didn't go thru I wouldn't actually mind watching those two fight...please don't ban me for that, i've been working outside in the heat all day!

Gerardo Avitia (Chicago)

Dan. Is Hugo Cazares ever fighting again? Would love to see him fight Darchinyan

Dan Rafael
  (4:07 PM)

He is on the schedule. Check it.

Benvenuto (Miami)

DTM....I'm out of PT and you're still going strong!!!! Sorry I missed the Max Abuse train.......he's an easier target than the WBC!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (4:08 PM)

How's the knee?

Rich (DC)

Dan, looking forward to seeing you on FNF. Last week I needed an interpreter to understand Whitaker. For a guy who barley got hit, he sounds terrible. As Rick James said, cocaine is a hell of a drug.

Dan Rafael
  (4:09 PM)

Yeah, Whitaker didn't sound so great did he?

Revenge of Max (NY)

I think they should just stop the fight and go to the scorecards when the show's timeslot is up...

Turk (DC)

The "face poisoning" that scratched Mike Jones' last opponent is one for the time capsule and something that would only be heard of in boxing. Is there any other injury or reason a fight was delayed that is the ridiculous and hilarious?

Dan Rafael
  (4:10 PM)

Not that I can think of. But I have to say -- I don't think poison in your face is very funny.

Toby (Houston)

If Cotto doesn't want to defend his belt at 145, he could turn down the fight with Manny. Simple as that.

Max (NY)

I hate you guys! I'm never coming back here...my daddy could beat up all of you!!!

Brian (Little Rock)

12 Rounds or TV time remaining.

Jx (Phoenix)

Thank God the software on this chat is fixed, so all the freaks can enjoy "MAX" in all his glory! I think we all feel a little dumber. Thank you "MAX"

Dan Rafael
  (4:11 PM)

The abuse of Max that I have not posted is some of the most wicked stuff I have ever seen! You Freaks are BRUTAL.

JR (Indiana)

Dan, there seems to be a lot more (I use that sparingly) coverage of boxing on ESPNEWS, etc. Is that intended, or just a plus from more high profile fights being made.

Dan Rafael
  (4:12 PM)

I think it's because the sport is making the right fights.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Thanks for asking DTM.......its alright....slow process. I tore my ACL, Patella Tendon, and my MCL......nothing keeps my from talking boxing though. By the way, Max might be the most abused chat participant in recent memory.

James B. (Augusta)

Max vs. "Pimples" for the Diamond Belt!

Randy (LV)

will Boxing ever consider bringing 15 round fights back?

Dan Rafael
  (4:15 PM)

Not going to happen.

Dan Rafael
  (4:16 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the marathon chat to pass the afternoon. Hope you are able to check out FNF tonight (10 pm ET). And enjoy the notebook and all of this week's blogs. Talk to you next week. Peace.
